N THIS ENVIRONMENT MONTH of June, we should hope that by now our people in Dumaguete if they really want an efficient and proper waste disposal system ,people must now start to segregate from source, meaning, they should start in their homes. How? By segregating those that will decay or are bio degradable apart from those that will not decay. The former may be thrown into a backyard pit so that the amount of garbage will not exceed its limit in the dumping area. If people don’t segregate, the dumping site will still continue to rise. Then there will be no end in our garbage disposal problem. -o0oWe suggest our barangay leaders go lakbay aral to Bayawan City and see what is already an established multi-awarded waste disposal complex. The outfit had lts multi-million waste disposal system. Thanks to vision of the late mayor Gerry Saraña, who held his fort and was victorious in really finishing the project waste disposal system and now, the people are so much benefitted because of the will power of its local leaders. Dumaguete is fast catching up, we hope this city will finally get there. This is a challenge to all LGU mayors to initiate on their level, what are the requirements of a garbage waste disposal system. GO BRAND NEW COA URGES LGU While it is initially prudent to see that certain government agencies continue to “save” old equipment, by having them repaired instead of buying new ones, the Commission on Audit COA advised all government agencies to consider the buying of new equipment including vehicles, instead of insisting on repairing old equipment because it will turnout to be more expensive for the government and consequently the taxpayers. -o0oNotice all over the country a pile of junked cars and equipment in government motor pools and even behind government offices including local government garages. It is now official that COA prefers government to buy new equipment instead of repairing old ones beause it will turn out to be eoncomical. -o0oFirstly, old and frequently damaged vehicle take long to repair, spare parts are no longer available, the bidding takes longer, and more susceptible to corruption and substandard and non-matching parts replace the old ones. Therefore, it will turn out to be more expensive because more repairs will be forthcoming. Repairs are mostly band aid solutions. While brand new buys have warranties, trouble-free long periods, thus more efficient results. -oo0oPHIL HEALTH ISSUE of paying fake kidney dialysis patients even if they were already dead is a bad sign of poor and dishonest irresponsible management. People’s money are being paid here. But because of a system that lacks proper efficient monitoring, the machine continues to “efficiently run” when in fact, the beneficiqaries are already long dead. This goes to many other offices that also need similar proportionate monitoring. -o00oThe GSIS on the other hand, owes the PPA Phil. Ports Authority over P41Million in rentals from land rentals at the port area in Manila , owned by GSIS, but leased by PPA to pier stakeholders maybe thinking that the port authority owns the land. When confronted by GSIS ,it turned out that the PPA had been collecting rentals through the years, now runTo page 20

ZD TRIVIA Are the Marcoses joining Jewelry public auction?

I

n a strange twist of fate, Malacanang said that legally the Marcoses can join the public auction for the millions worth of Marcos acquired jewelry even if the same family is the prime suspect in such ill-gotten wealth. Legally though, the Marcoses are still presumed innocent until final judtgement which has not yet come forty years after the confescate on after the downfall of the dictator and until now… the case continues to be litigated. But the Marcoses are opposing the sale of the controversial Marcos jewels of Imelda in a public auction even as the government wants to use the money to help the poor people and victims of martial law out of its proceeds from public auction. The government therefore announced it will oppose any attempt of the Marcos family to block the public auction of the jewelry collection of former first lady Imelda Marcos, .

Editorial; It takes a smoker.

I

t takes a smoker to stop smoking and convince others to stop when things go bad. Unless one is a smoker, you cannot tell others to stop smoking because they simply wont. Only those who have been there can tell . But thanks to our ex-smoker president who supports the law, and complains he has now a throat problem, and other legislators in congress who are supporters of the tobacco tax bill soon passed into law hopefully by the end of the 17th congress on June 7. The Lower House approved the tobacco tax bill version the other year yet in 2017. The Senate-approved bill proposes to increase the tobacco tax up to P60 per pack of cigatrette gradually until P2023 from P35 tax per pack today under the TRAIN (Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act) law. The House version approved only P45 tax per pack until 2022. If both houses will compromise in the bicam, then it could hit P55 tax per pack. A pack of cigarette now costs P85 for Winston and similar others, including tax of P35 per pack. With the gradual increase the cost per pack of cigarettes will surely hit over a hundred pesos per pack and those who still want to smoke

expensive cigarettes are surely out of their mind. They are both destroying their pockets and their bodies. It can only be called crazy. What does increased tobacco taxes do to help society: 1.It will provide funds for universal health care of the Filipinos , a ready budget for health care for the poor sick people; 2. It will avoid the deaths of 12 filipinos daily due to cigarette smoking; 3. When cigarette is expensive, only a few can afford to smoke, thus preserve the health of thousands; healthy people are productive people; the World Health Organization says raising the taxes to P45 per pack will prevent the deaths of 300,000 people due to smoking-related diseases. If nothing was done to raise to tobacco taxes, there would have been an increase of 250,000 new smokers every year. Thus we believe that by the end of the 17th Congress the new tobacco tax bill shall have been passed into law by President Duterte who is himself an anti smoking advocate , due obviously to his throat disease which has caught him due to heavy smoking and drinking in the past.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo issued the statement after President Rodrigo Duterte approved the public auction of the P704.8 million worth of jewelry seized from the Marcoses in Hawaii in 1986. But what is good news for the Marcoses is that their family or their dummies can join in the public auction. So if the Marcoses are the highest bidders, then the jewelry go back to them but this time, at a good price of P704 million . But knowing the appreciative values of jewelries today, buy keeping it for another five years, the price could yet double, thus recover the auctioned price. That is the beauty and tragedy of being rich. “The government feels that, as the President says, the proceeds have to go to the Filipino people who are in urgent need of government aid,” Malacanang said at a press briefing. The President approved the auction on the request of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG). The PCGG is also planning to auction off the Marcoses’ real estate properties and shares of stock worth P376 million. Still, since the Marcoses are still presumed innocent until final judgement, then they or their assigns can join the public auction. FOOTSTEPS AND FINGERPRINTS WHY DO YOU WALK? Walking. I am encouraging myself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, hopefully to gain more energy and to lose some of the pounds that have accumulated in me since the holidays. My scales when I weigh myself mornings seem to groan and complain whenever they see me coming! I walk early mornings with Jun, my husband. I do stairs instead of take the elevator. At my office, I try to remember to get out of my comfortable desk chair at least once per hour and walk around for 5 to 10 minutes. While walking around in a nearby bookstore I picked Nancy Russel Catan up a book entitled “Sole to Soul” by Rolando V. dela Rosa, O.P. He has some very good thoughts on walking that I would like to share with you. He begins by remembering that the way Aristotle taught philosophy to his disciples was by walking in the Lyceum of ancient Athens. While his disciples’s soles trod on the ground, Aristotle touched their souls by teaching them how to think, understand, and be threw small pebbles like marbles … a venhappy. dor of prayer rugs reverently unfolding her And I thought of philosopher and au- rugs for display … the way the shadows thor Henry David Thoreau (…memories of from the tall ancient buildings shaded the my American Lit class in College…) who pathway … These wonderful little samples spent his happy and healthy life by walking of life would not have been visible or noin the forest and woodlands at least four to ticed if I had been in our tour van driving five hours every day. hese days, people of all ages are searching for a bet ter quality of life – less traffic, less pollution, less stress. Can we reasonably aim for a happier, healthier lifestyle, with more time to bond with family and friends? Part of seeking a happier, healthier lifestyle is getting rid of toxic and negative people, bad memories and circumstances. These spoil our zest for life and wreak havoc on our emotions. The sooner we do it, the better for us. Thankfully, there are many ways we can do this: through sports, social dance like Zumba or other Latin Dances, yoga and meditation, spiritual reflection or going for a whole body massage. Over and above these, we can always pray. This is our hotline to God and the line is always open, 24/7. In Dumaguete, these activities are all there for those who’d like to take part. lot of people are so con scious about their age. When they see some streaks of gray hair on their head; when their memory lapses a bit; when they feel weaker, etc.; they readily conclude that they are already getting old. Authorities have found factors that would make people feel much younger and happier as they grow older. While working with the world famous Silliman University , Foundation University and NORSU I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing many high quality "teachers", not just professors but TEACHERS. I am proud to have met and known them. My concern is the slow erosion of this noble profession. My concern is increased by not knowing what I can do to halt this degradation. For example, the oldest child is often reliable, conscientious, structured and organized. They are sometimes controlling and often achieving. The middle child is characterized by being very sociable. They are good at mediation and peacemaking. Because they care about other people, and want everybody to be happy , they make a good friend.

t’s really a matter of faith, of how strong our faith is. With faith, we know that whatever be our condition and situation in life, God is always there and will never abandon us. He is there to help us. He actually takes care of everything. It’s this faith that springs and strengthens our hope and charity, which is the essence, purpose and fullness of our life. With faith, we can manage to be at peace all the time, to experience joy and awe even in the midst of our unavoidable earthly suffering, and to go on and move on despite whatever. To battle our fears, worries and sadness, we need to strengthen our faith and live it to the hilt. And let us allow it to educate all our human powers and faculties—our intelligence and will, our emotions and passions, our memory and imagination, etc. Let us take time and learn the relevant skills to achieve this ideal. Let us remember that we are a composite of body and soul. And since our soul is spiritual, it has its life and origin in the Spirit

of God himself. We need to develop our life following the ways that would reinforce the unity of the composite parts of our life in their proper order. We have to realize that our life is mainly spiritual and supernatural, not simply material and natural. That way, we remove ourselves from being entirely dependent on merely human, earthly and temporal factors. We allow ourselves to be governed by a much powerful agency that can effectively cruise us through our life’s ocean of mysteries. Faith enables us to cope with the reality of to page 7

I love you as deeply as a father loves his children Psalm 103:13 (WEB) ike a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. The point of this promise is that God the Father loves us just like a loving father would love and have mercy on his own children. I am continually amazed to see the ongoing analogies throughout the Bible where God wants us to know that He is really a Father to us! Not just a ‘father figure’, but a real Dad! Some of you might be reading this promise and thinking about negative past experiences that you have had with your own father and shudder to think that God would treat you in the same way. I think that is one of the most common roadblocks that many of us experience in our journey to know God as Father. It is very natural for us to project onto God many of the same life experiences that we have had with our earthly fathers. Over the years, we have even heard some comments where people have said to us... “I have had one father and I don’t want another one!” The truth is that God is the perfect Father and He loves us completely and infinitely better than even the best earthly dad. Jesus came to show us what His Father was really like and to bring us into a real, authentic relationship with God as Father. If you don’t feel safe relating to God as Father, ask Jesus to show you what He is really like and He will be glad to do to page 12

One can compare this to instruction in driving a car. Several instruction sessions are needed and beginners must be especially cautious until they gain experience. However, whereas a mistake in driving can cause a tragic accident, a mistake in NFP can be at the most the occasion of the wonderful gift of a new baby! Millions learn to drive cars. NFP is a more important skill, indeed a way of life, and well worth the effort to learn! Is NFP not the same as contraception? Not at all. Only NFP can help to achieve pregnancy. Of course even NFP can be used selfishly by a couple to avoid having children, but whereas inactivity may be good or bad according to circumstances, contraceptive behaviour is always essentially wrong and harmful. However, when the couple do have intercourse, it is not tainted by contraception - they do not explicitly exclude the possibility of conception - and intercourse is allowed to be the full expression of love it is meant to be, with the result that the couple build up their mutual love, which then overflows in the desire for a child. This is why NFP couples tend to have more children than others. Is this not irresponsible because of overpopulation? No. On the contrary, in the industrial nations there

It is safe because it does not involve any interference with the healthy working of the human organism, but only observation. Her STM observations may also assist the medical diagnosis. It does no harm to any child conceived during the practice of it. LET THE BIBLE SPEAK:

NOTICE

N

ew Testament Bible Baptist Church located in Pulantubig Near Mag Say Say Elementary School in the Captain T. Amores Estate. We would like to invite you to our Services each Sunday at 9 a.m. and again at 4:30 p.m. Also, we have a Wednesday Night Bible Study at 6:30 p.m. Isaiah the great prophet in the O.T. gave some verses in 40:29 “He giveth power to the faint and to them that have no might he increaseth strength” I think many people today really want to do their best in life. It seems as we get more busy, in our minds, we think success will come. I am strongly for good hard work and doing your best. We as born again Bible Believers will work and seemingly little prayers answered and very few people to come to our churches. I ask where is the power? Many people will say, ‘get more of the Holy Spirit’. I believe when a person gets saved by humbling himself that the Holy Spirit comes in with His fullness. So, it would seem as we humble ourselves and realize it is not with in us to do God’s work but yield to Him who can do it. Will we allow God more room in our lives to clear out the things that hinder us from having the power? Paul said in I John 3:24 “…And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us” Philippians 2:13 “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” Galatians 2:20 Paul said, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” The Flesh is powerless. Romans 7:18 “For I know that in me, (that is in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing..” As we confess that we are sinner and come realizing we can make it to heaven on our own, allow the Lord Jesus to save us. Would you let the God who is our maker, come into your life and give you a purpose to live? NOTICE

20 Akyat-bahay robs rampant in Daro

June 9, 2019 cases against them, as soon as stolen items are recovered. For their part, the barangay council of Daro headed by village chief Jovencio Tan Jr. admitted incidents of theft in his barangay have reached an alarming proportion, second to Barangay Taclobo. Tan scheduled a conference with victims today, Monday, June 3, 2019 to address the peace and order concern. Present were victims’ parents who initimated their desire to cooperate in order to identify the suspects, whom they believe is just lurking in the dark waiting for their next victim. The village chief has planned of establishing additional tanod outpost within the subdivision area and to call for another conference with the homeowners association to discuss the possibility of contributing certain amount to

fund the hiring of a blue guard or serenos for the subdivision. Tan explained duty hours of the tanods are limited because many of them are working during the day. He also has plans of increasing the honoraria of the tanods. Former city councillor Antonio “Tony Rems” Remollo, who happens to be the uncle of the victims, had refused to believe insinuations, thieveries in a certain locality proliferate because the police is part of the sharing scheme. But he does not buy the standard response, “persons of interest” are being investigated, unless they are arrested and charged in court.

reported the matter to Camp Crame national headquarters. The latest to be victimized by an akyatbahay gang on May 30, 2019 Thursday is the Jocson Apartment situated at St. Michael Street of Ma. Asuncion Village, Daro where couples Mikel and Nadia Teves were victimized. Carted away by suspects included a P30,000 worth of gold necklace, two IPhone 6 cellphones and cash money. As a student of law, Daro village chief Jovencio Tan Jr., said all evidences on the recent robbery are circumstantial, they need concrete evidence beyond reasonable doubt in order to indict the suspects. The police has to probe and

find evidence in order to file a case against those “persons in interest.” Lt Col Galsim denied accusations of inaction on that particular incident, in saying the theft and robbery section immediately proceeded to the area, conducted follow up investigation with fingerprints being lifted from the crime scenes by SOCO. Aside from the investigation, it is intensifying a patrol system in coordination with barangay officials. He stressed, peace and order concerns is not the responsibility of the police alone, it needs the cooperation of the community. In fact, records will show, a number of thieveries in Dumaguete were solved but victims would refuse to pursue

Are the Marcoses joining Jewelries public auction? From page 4 be the direct beneficiaries of the public auction. “They come from the poor and underprivileged, from faraway provinces who do not have access to reparation process for rights victims,” said Danny Dela Fuente, vice chair of Samahan ng mga Ex-Detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto (Selda). “The martial law victims deserve to benefit from these funds. Not doing so defeats the purpose of recovering all ill-gotten wealth from the Marcoses,” the SELDA GROUP said. With the Marcoses regaining political influence

under the Duterte administration after the midterm elections, Selda called for vigilance over the proceeds of the planned auction BECAUSE technically, if the Marcoses win the bid or be declared the highest bidder, then the jewelries go back to the Marcos family and so will the real estate areas being withheld by the PCGG in the past. So what good was the Marcos wealth being sequestered when the same family won the public bidding and got back the properties? At least now they bought it back with clean money however they earned it.—30—
