he National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Team and their bevy of heavy equipment ended their retrieval of 66 missing persons in Solongon, La Libertad and Guihulngan with the sad note that these are now presumed dead, and were added to the original 39 fatalities in the Feb 6 earthquake of 6.9 intensity.

Government and volunteer rescuers have decided to end all retrieval operations Thursday, particularly in Bar an gay Plan as, Gu ih ulngan City an d Solonggo n, La Liber tad where more than 50 are still missing. The cessation of the retrieval operations brings the number of the dead to 105 people 13 days after the unprecedented 6.9 magnitude earthquake, which experts claim occu rr ed 10 kilometers deep causing

massive damage to private and public infrastructure never before seen in this part of the region. Guihu ln gan Mayo r Ernesto Reyes led local and police officials in explaining to the grieving relatives the decision to halt the retrieval operations by citing three reasons: the missing, who are now presumed dead are in the advanced state of decomposition; the continued diggings would expose the rescuers to health hazards and finally, the contin-

But the one incident that landed most prominently in the national prime TV news, national broadsheets and tabloids was the sticking of the n ame of “MagDegamo” in th e DSWD rescue bundle of goodies to the victims. Apparently, it was intended to

The City Council has earlier declared in Barangay Planas a memorial site with Mayor Reyes planning to mount a huge cross with the names of all 22 victims who were buried when a portion of the mountain collapsed burying dozens of homes situated at its foot. he Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has installed five more digital seismographs in strategic areas in the earthquake prone areas of the first district in the north negros.

These new digital seismographs will help boost the determination of the exact locations of future earthquakes which the Phivolcs did not at all discount. It means that earthquakes can come anytime because it is either the effect of the movements below the ground, or below those active volcano es. Its fau lt lin es can

The new seismographs are installed in Kabankalan DPWH compou nd; at the High land Resor t ar ea in Mabinay; at the municipal hall area of Tayasan; at the Tropical Garden Resort in Badian, Cebu; and at the residential compound of Jeopert Villegas in Vallehermoso. T

The recent earthquake that struck the province destroyed government infrastructures estimated at P700 million based on the partial report submitted by provincial engineer Franco Alpuerto.

Alpuerto submitted the report to Gov. Roel Degamo yesterday after one week of inspection and assessment conducted by field engineers of the provincial government. Damage to bridges was initially placed at P208 million, another P85 million to public wor ks, P130 million damage to waterworks and P242 million damage to r oads f ro m Bindoy to Guihulngan. Gov.
