The Coney Island Hotdog Eating Contest has been a NY Independence Day spectacle for over 50 years. With attendance upwards of 40,000, 20 contestants are given 12 minutes to– you get the idea. At the end of the competition, 100,000 hotdogs are donated to the Food Bank of New York City. If you can’t make it, tune in on ESPN and enjoy your own hotdogs, slowly.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Pack a beach umbrella, or two.

O’er the marshmallows we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming? The usually-kicked-back village of Ocean Beach, CA has been the site of a giant marshmallow fight on July 4th for decades. Banned and re-banned, this rebellious holiday tradition is still alive and well among the students from the neighboring University of CA, San Diego. Attend at your own risk.

HANNIBAL, MISSOURI

The birthplace of celebrated author Mark Twain welcomes thousands of visitors every July 4th for a reenactment of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Spectators dress up as their favorite characters to participate in the Fence Painting competition. Inspired by Twain’s iconic book, contestants race to paint a fence the fastest. Watching it dry isn’t as exciting.

Recently, I took the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Maria, CA. It was a trip I always wanted to take. I went to the beach, visited Dinosaur Cave Beach, swam in the ocean and waited for the sunset.

One of my most memorable summer trip memories was when I went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with all my friends. We had a blast exploring and enjoying the beach.

My favorite trip was visiting Hershey Park with my kid.
