HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH 9/15 - 10/15
Representation matters. Now the largest ethnic minority in the United States, the Hispanic population comprises many cultures, each with their distinct roots – but all fully American. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates just that! September is significant to many Hispanic Americans, as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days. Aligning with these significant dates, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the strength and resilience of all Latin peoples.
Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the pioneers whose influence on American culture is still widely felt. Entertainers like Selena Quintanilla brought Tejano music into the mainstream. And activists like César Chávez broke barriers for underrepresented groups. So this September, we remember these leaders and look forward to the next generation of Hispanic excellence!
As we embrace the season of change, we also look back to the traditions that ground us with the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 17th. Over 3,000 years ago, East and Southeast Asian communities gathered together for this agricultural festival to honor the moon in hopes of a plentiful harvest. That’s why it’s also known as the Moon Festival. Today, this festival has become a celebration of family unity… and tasty treats known as mooncakes!
Mooncakes represent longevity and togetherness and add even more sweetness to family gatherings. Communities celebrate the love and warmth of family with feasts decorated with beautiful, intricate Chinese lanterns. Ultra-Fun Fact: While larger celebrations take place internationally in places like Singapore and Malaysia, there’s a Mid-Autumn Festival parade in Philadelphia that takes the (moon)cake. So here’s to the kitchen tables that will soon be filled with food and good company!

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I like to stay active - going to pilates, hikes, & picking up new sports such as pickle ball and golf! I’ve recently gotten into golf and have been taking lessons to practice my swing. Other hobbies that I enjoy are cooking homemade meals and trying out new restaurants or cafes I see on TikTok.
What’s been your biggest success this year so far?
My biggest success this year is probably trying out new things outside of my comfort zone and putting myself out there. I normally am not the person to try new things but this year, I have been trying to do activities by myself such learning golf, revisiting pottery classes, and trying new pilates classes.
How does tradition and community play an important role in your life?
Food that is on my table and the time I spend with family and friends during celebrations such as the Mid-Autumn Festival help connect me to my traditions and community. My family celebrates the holiday by purchasing mooncakes to share with our loved ones and friends who have never tried them before. We will usually also plan a dinner to catch up with each other and eat traditional Cantonese meals.
