PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I hope that you have had the opportunity to read the recent Vision 2030 publication. In it you will find important information on all that the Board and Talon Tribe have been working on this year—results of the Members’ surveys, the Club’s new Strategic Plan, and the many Board initiatives we are undertaking to carry RBCC into another hundred years of operation. With all the changes going on at the Club, no doubt it is generating a lot of feelings in the membership! And, as I spoke about in last month’s message, even “good” change can generate anxiety.

If you have read any of my past President’s monthly articles, you know by now I’m a big Ted Lasso fan.The wisdom this man shares in the show, the leadership and character he demonstrates, as well as the overall positivity and kindness Ted lives by is a wonderful example to me of how to live one’s life. Of all the lines from Ted, my favorite is one he borrowed from Walt Whitman:

“Be curious, not judgmental.”

In a practical sense, listening is the core to distinguish between the two. In listening you learn, in judging you tell. Put simply, as my wise father used to say, “You learn more from listening, then you do from talking!”.

I make this distinction as I want you to know with all the changes going on, your Board and Tribe are curious, listening to the Members and want your input. You have heard, and will be hearing more, about our capital needs and dues required to fund them.Capital dues are necessary to fund, repair and replace our existing assets and resources. These “obligatory” needs are not covered by monthly membership dues which cover the cost of dayto-day operations. More than 80% of country clubs today have come to understand this as a critical need for continued growth and survival and have established capital dues. While your

Board is unanimous in our conclusion that capital dues are necessary for RBCC’s continued growth and success as Delmarva’s premier club, we are listening to you, the membership. We want to gather your thoughts to decide what is recommended, for who pays what and how much.

In March, we spoke to all RBCC Committees, consisting of more than 100 Members, on what the Board has learned about capital dues and listened to their thoughts and questions. This month, we are putting together Focus Groups made up of a diverse section of Regular and Social Members to hear more about the membership’s thoughts on capital dues as well as questions and concerns the Members have. We understand that even though nonStockholder Members will not have the right to vote on a Capital Dues initiative, we believe it is important that their voice be heard as dues affect all Members.

Coffee with C will continue on April 13th as another opportunity for Member input. This will be followed in May by a Capital Dues Town Hall meeting with Club Benchmarking, who has worked with us on this data-driven analysis, where you will be able to hear the Board’s reasoning, conclusions and recommendations to the membership for the required vote.

I look forward to meeting and listening to you soon!

GENERAL MANAGER’S UPDATE

C's Poem of the Month

"The air is like a butterfly With frail blue wings

The happy earth looks at the sky And sings" "And fairy month of waking mirth

From whom our joys ensue

Thou early gladder of the earth

Thrice welcome here anew

With thee the bud unfolds to leaves

The grass greens on the lea And flowers their tender boon receives

To bloom and smile with thee" - John Clare, Spring

For almost a century now, we have been treating April as the official start of our new season and the beginning of the fiscal year. For as long as I can remember, the seasons come earlier and earlier, and the months between the seasons are busier and busier with all of it thanks to you, our beloved Members. Our membership is growing both in numbers and the level of engagement, which is our best indicator of how much the Talon Tribe’s efforts and dedication are being appreciated.

Our goals are always to expand and improve our offerings and services, in response to your

feedback and in sync with the private club industry. The survey that we sent out takes care of the first part, but to find out what “others” are doing, we spread out. We attend industry conferences such as the CMAA World Conference in Las Vegas, the Hospitality Finance & Technology Professionals Conference in Savannah, the PGA Show in Florida and the GCSAA in Arizona, local chapter seminars, countless webinars, and Business Management Institute workshops around the country and come back with to-do lists and “stolen” best practices from around 5,000 clubs. We do this all while continuing our education, which is another thing we want to thank you for supporting. This eliminates the guessing in our decisions as the entire Tribe’s professional knowledge continues to elevate. What we find out is that most clubs are dealing with the same challenges we are such as:

Membership levels being still unpredictable after the pandemic.

Long waiting lists for many clubs.

The never-ending quest for clubs to fund capital needs (obligatory and aspirational). Labor shortages and incredibly increased wages.

Cyber threats and the arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at clubs.

The “business-like” approach to club governance.

The rise of new amenities across the country.

And how these points are being considered while remembering that we are in the business "peoples happiness.”

Tackling these challenges also gives room for opportunities and some of those include:

The 1925 Eagle Foundation is now officially up and running with a Board of trustees and getting ready to do the great work it was set up to do for our Members, our staff and the community.

The new Strategic Plan (although a good plan is more like continuously updating instead of finalized)

The Club’s Bylaws are being re-written while our Certificate of Incorporation is being re-stated.

Keeping a close eye on the industry is being done at the same time as our hands are busy around the Club with our own club’s unique initiatives. Some of these initiatives are visible like Clubhouse updates, golf course improvements, and parking lot repairs, while others are behind the scenes like changing accounting auditors, updating insurance coverages, and improving our cybersecurity and then there’s some inbetween like new hires and re-hires in preparation for the opening season.

As you can tell, there’s a lot going on at this beautiful Club we all call home. And, my onepage article barely can summarize some things, but that’s what Saturdays at “Coffee with C” are for each month. Please come to find out how the fiscal year that just ended looked like, what are the next strategic initiatives, why do we have so much construction going on around the Club, who’s new to the Talon Tribe and any other questions you would like to ask your General Manager. Oh, and great coffee, snacks, and even new friendships, of course.

Happy April! Happy new season!

TALON TRIBE UPDATE

The Talon Tribe uses the off-season for training and education. Over the past two months, we have been busy soaking up knowledge to improve the must-have membership experience at RBCC. A handful of the things the Talon Tribe has done include: attend the annual Leadership Retreat in Viriginia to work on the strategic plan and visit with our counterparts at Farmington Country Club; attend various conferences including the PGA Show in Florida, CMAA World Conference in Las Vegas, and GSCAA Conference in Austin; and several hours of training and testing here in Delaware to support our staff to be their best each day at RBCC.

“Train the Trainers” program by Joyce Halama, CCM. This training session was held at RBCC for all supervisor roles to assist with training “best practices.”

The Club is delighted to introduce Mary Veenema, Member Services Specialist, to the Talon Tribe. Mary will assist Bethany in the membership department including application processing, waiting list management, Member communications, membership tours, orientation, new member welcome receptions, centennial projects and more. Mary comes to RBCC after working for the State of Delaware at the Indian River Marina.

Mary is eager to meet the membership and help to deliver the must-have membership experience.

GOLF DEPARTMENT REPORT

Days, and national junior golf tournaments. Tournament registration has officially kicked off with the annual RBCC Masters Tournament and Men’s Talon Cup opening. You should have recently received the 2024 Sports & Recreation Guide which detailed all golf materials for the year including events, pricing, and more. As we eagerly wait for the season to begin, let's mark our calendars and prepare for a year filled with thrilling competition, camaraderie, and memorable moments.

Here's to a season filled with birdies, eagles, and unforgettable moments on the course!

As the days grow longer and the temperatures begin to rise, we find ourselves on the brink of another exciting golf season. With each new season comes a sense of anticipation and possibility—a chance to improve our game, connect with friends old and new, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the country club that we love. We are quickly approaching the Master Tournament which historically begins our season. Water coolers will return to the course, new flagsticks, cups, course trash cans will also be put out, event registrations will be in full swing, and many of the Talon Tribe staff will return committed to providing you with a fantastic experience. Let’s kick off the 2024 golf season, with excitement for what lies ahead on the fairways and greens.

Golf is a sport that thrives on change (think Tiger Woods many swing changes) —whether it's adapting to changes on the course or Club calendar, refining our swing techniques, or embracing the latest advancements in equipment technology. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a newcomer to the game, there's always something new to learn and explore at the Club. As we pay homage to the rich history at RBCC, let's also embrace the exciting advancements that shape its future.

The 2024 golf calendar is packed with excitement, from major championships for both men and ladies, weekly Ladies’ and Men’s

Whether you're aiming to lower your handicap, perfect your putting stroke, or simply enjoy a leisurely round with friends, the 2024 season presents many opportunities to elevate your game. Take advantage of instructional clinics, practice sessions, and personalized coaching with the Golf Professional staff to hone your skills and reach new heights on the course. If interested in private lessons, Chris Gray, the Club’s Lead Golf Instructor, is available to help you improve your game. Chris’s teaching book is available online through the Club Website under the “Make A Tee Time” tab, then click “Lessons.” If interested in any of the other Golf Professionals, just contact the Golf Shop to register for a lesson with them.

One of the most rewarding aspects of golf is the sense of community it fosters. As I have previously mentioned, we are hosting a national AJGA Event this Spring. There are many ways to get involved from player registration, spotting, to timekeeping groups on the course. All of which helps these young players to experience a high level of competition and tournament atmosphere. If interested, please follow the volunteer link that is in eagle tracks or contact Rudy Blancke who is our volunteer chair for the event.

Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to the club, there have been many changes and advancements at RBCC that have moved the Club forward. We truly believe that there has never been a better time to be part of Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

GREENS DEPARTMENT UPDATE

I presented a seminar at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) show called “Control the Controllables.” It discussed what business and agronomic factors can be controlled and how to mitigate the ones you cannot. The weather was the one thing that didn’t need to be discussed as it is a given; no matter how much we can be on top of everything, it is the one thing we can’t control.

This winter is no exception. It is hard to believe that less than two hundred miles further south of LedgeRock, coupled with the ocean, would make that much difference in the weather. As a greens department in PA, we would normally put the turf to bed around Thanksgiving and not “wake it up” until the soil temperature in April was warm enough for consistent growth. So, it has been weird for me to be mowing this early in the year. The warmer wet weather has warmed the soil to where the turf is already greening up nicely and the season is ramping up quickly. The wet weather has been extremely frustrating for the greens team as it is delaying finishing up the projects and transitioning into maintenance mode. Now that the growth is speeding up, we are stepping up the maintenance frequency and starting to tidy up the course for the spring.

The biggest difference you may notice this spring over other years is that the greens are not aerated. While the soil temperatures are warmer than normal right now, there is still a chance that we will get a cold snap which will lower them and slow growth again. While I was interviewing last May for the Superintendent’s position, the course had not healed from aeration, so it was one of the items I wanted to address for this year. Since healing is based on the growth rate, and that is based on the soil temperatures, it only makes sense to aerate when the soil temperatures are optimum for growth which will greatly reduce the healing time and have the course available in prime condition for longer. Researching the average soil temperatures for the last 5/10/50 years shows a very consistent pattern. The soils get to their optimum growth temperature by mid-May, so the plan is to aerate them then. The healing time should be under two weeks, and it means the greens will be in great condition in April and May, when traditionally they would have aeration scars on them. I changed the dates to this timeframe at my last position, and with it working out as planned, the results were great offering the course to be available longer.

Once the course dries out, we will solid tine the fairways which should not affect play too much. Once I know that the growth is optimum for the turf to handle it, I plan to start texture management with brushing and grooming on the fairways. We may see some thin turf after we start that but it only means we are removing the poor-quality turf and encouraging the better varieties and strains to take shape.

As for the projects – anyone that has been playing golf has seen that we have done a lot of work on the course. A lot of the projects are intertwined so it looks a little unorganized, but that also means that we will complete them around the same time. The project on hole 19 has been very frustrating, but as of writing this article we are on the home stretch. We have been one week away from completing it for the last four weeks. We initially had delays in getting the fill excavated from other areas of the course. Once we got it in place, we had to wait for some dry weather to install the irrigation. We waited three weeks for it to dry out and after talking with the contractor, we decided to battle the wet conditions and get it done. It wasn’t pretty and took longer than anticipated, but we finally got it in. The next issue was to find a dry spell to laser level the teeing areas. It needs to be dry for this so we’re hoping to squeeze it in between the rainy forecast. If it goes to plan, by the time you read this it will be done and ready for sod. It is tantalizingly close so we can’t wait until the last piece of sod is laid!

Also, by the time you read this, the tees on the course should be sodded and we should be working on hole 11. Since the tees there are so small and spread out, the work on them is not as simple as the work done on the others. While we will not be doing a major redesign on them, I want to make sure that they at least look more consistent with the others. The old sod from the others provided cheap fill to extend them, and once that is pushed into place it should not take too long to regrade the tee complex.

Most of the tree work for this year is complete and, in a few days, we will finish it up. The machine that runs the stump grinder is currently tied up with other projects, so please bear with us as there may still be some stumps around for a few weeks until the machine is available.

It is still in the plans to remove the left bunker on 17 and after that we will work on removing the

bulkhead on 6. This is something we plan to complete on our maintenance days so it will be a few weeks before it is fully done.

Let’s hope we can get some consistent dry weather so the team can actually get some work done as planned – and more importantly make it more fun to play too!

As always if you have any questions, please email me superintendent@rehobothbeachcc.com
