One that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Screen Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. Birthstones

Pretty Stones or So Much More? By Susan Gellert

B

eauty combined with durability make coloured gemstones a delight to own. Add in the meaning and healing properties associated with each one and they become priceless.

While gemstones have been around forever, modern birthstones did not exist until 1912 when the jewellers of America developed a standardized list of Birthstones for each month. According to the American Gem Society each month’s assigned stone or stones have a specific purpose or belief attached to it.

8    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

According to legends wearing a gemstone during its specific month heightens its healing and protective power. Historically individuals were encouraged to not only own their own birthstone but also to accumulate one for each of the months in order to maximize their healing potential. Birthstones are both beautiful to wear and shrouded in history and tradition making them the perfect gift for someone you love or a special indulgence for yourself.

STYLE & BEAUTY

JANUARY Garnet signifies eternal friendship and trust.

FEBRUARY Amethyst is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted and is considered the gemstone of meditation, peace, balance, courage, and inner strength.

MARCH The serene color of Aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and level headed. Bloodstone was believed to have healing powers—especially effective for blood disorders.

JUNE Alexandrite, is said to help balance one’s emotional state, to provide confidence, to increase self-esteem and to help bring about change. Known for its calming properties, the Pearl is said to aid purity, charity, integrity, truth, and loyalty in its wearer. Moonstone is believed to encapsulate within the stone a spirit whose purpose is to bring good fortune.

APRIL The Diamond birthstone is thought to provide the wearer with better relationships and an increase in inner strength. Wearing diamonds is purported to bring other benefits such as balance, clarity and abundance.

MAY Emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth.

JULY Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love.

AUGUST Peridot is said to host magical powers and h e a l i n g p ro p e r t i e s t o p ro t e c t a g a i n s t nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a wonderful year. Sardonyx is a form of onyx and it is believed that it will bring courage and victory to the wearer.

SEPTEMBER Sapphire has been popular since the Middle Ages and according to folklore, will protect your loved ones from envy and harm.

NOVEMBER One of the most powerful gemstones, Topaz facilitates the balance of emotions and provides protection from greed. Considered the gemstone to provide greater or increased hearing, Citrine also promotes success, abundance, and clear thinking.

DECEMBER Tanzanite is one of the most treasured of all crystals for spiritual exploration, bringing together all aspects of communication and psychic power. Folk wisdom grants Zircon the power to relieve pain, to increase appetite, to protect travelers from disease and injury, and to prevent nightmares guaranteeing a deep, tranquil sleep. A gemstone steeped in lore and tradition, Turquoise is a healing and balancing stone.

OCTOBER Opal is known to highlight the positive actions and emotions of the self, enhancing the good and true, and fostering one’s highest potential. Tourmaline is believed to be a stress reliever, to increase mental alertness, to improve circulation and to strengthen the immune system.

Higher Conscious Connection Higher Conscious Connections is a spiritually based business owned and operated by Colleen Lee. Services include group or private Intuitive Angel Readings, Mediumship, Reiki, Past Life Sessions, Home/Business Energy Clearings, as well as classes, workshops and meditation evenings. In an Angel Reading, you will receive messages of guidance from the Angels. Sometimes loved ones may also come through with messages! Reiki means “Universal Life Energy”. It is a process of working with that Universal Life Energy, using a technique of lying on of hands to balance the body’s energy—physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Reiki can help relieve stress and anxiety, remove energy blockages and assist in bringing balance into all areas of your life.

A Past Life Session could help you figure out why you keep repeating the same pattern in your life—seemingly attracting the wrong people, always struggling financially, or even why you may have unexplained pain—it could all be connected with a past life! Once discovered, we can work to remove that Energy, enabling you to move forward.

Meditation is the key to your spiritual development. Higher Conscious Connections offer weekly guided meditation on alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Weyburn CUPE office, 46-3rd Street. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary. Check out Higher Conscious Connections on Facebook for a list of Classes, Workshops and Meditations. Colleen Lee

YOUR HEALTH

Achieving

Life Balance

Through Self Care By Susan Gellert

ith increasingly busy lives and people being pulled into a dozen directions, taking time for yourself can often fall to the wayside. But studies show that self-care is the key to improving both mental and physical health so it is vital to find the time.

W

Changes don’t have to be earth shattering to have a positive impact. Mental Health professionals suggest starting by taking 20 minutes a day to do something for yourself and move forward from there.

Self-Care can be defined as any action or behaviour that has a positive impact on one’s mental or physical well-being. Choosing self-care behaviours or activities is part of a healthy lifestyle choice that will lead to less stress and a better balanced life.

The possibilities are endless but the bottom line is to figure out what works for you and remember it may be something completely new. Small changes every day will lead to a more balanced life and ultimately to a stronger and healthier you.

Still not sure where to start? Here are some suggestions:

Phone a friend. Make a lunch or coffee date. Try a new place each time. Be adventurous

Join a local gym and find a program that fits your lifestyles. Or find a yoga or meditation class that you enjoy.

Breathe—Learn to do deep breathing exercise and perhaps try to change what you are breathing in by experimenting with essential oils. Be mindful and focus on the positive. Keep a gratitude journal. Increasing mindfulness can change your perspective.

Go for a massage.

Indulge in a regular facial, manicure or pedicure.

Unplug, In an increasingly technological world it is important to unplug from social media and email and take notice of what is happening around you.

YOUR HEALTH

Try a new hobby or explore something you have an interest in. There are so many choices ranging from crafty ideas to holistic healing or vitamin supplementation. Set a goal to learn something new every month.

Get outside. Go for a walk and get some fresh air.

Natural Healing is about taking control of your Body, Mind and Spirit. Soul Matrix Natural Healing has the tools to assist you. Carly Du, owner of Soul Matrix Natural Healing, says her spiritual journey began after a terrible reaction to a flu shot in 2009. After that, she started to wonder if there were other ways to protect herself and her family from illness. “In my quest for knowledge, I took all of the levels of Reiki training and started to work with crystals and essential oils,” says Carly, who is originally from China and has been in Canada for nine years. “I started seeking natural healing solutions that have been practiced for hundreds or thousands of years and I was continually amazed by the results from these natural healing modalities.”

and mantra chanting. “We have found these groups to be very beneficial for exercising our psychic muscles, and we have had reports of excellent therapeutic results for participants,” says Carly. The goal of Soul Matrix Natural Healing is to provide education and opportunities for anyone wishing to start a journey for the soul and spirit or in other words to start a journey inward. “If you are seeking help on your spiritual path, or if you are able to provide knowledge for others on a healing journey, please let us know,” says Carly.

Carly was fascinated by sound healing, such as mantra chanting (the extremely powerful practice for soul and body), hypnosis, Chinese traditional elemental healing (healing body and emotions with five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth) and Chinese traditional feng shui.

“I am grateful for the beautiful souls that I have in my life, especially my dear husband, Tyson Ereth; my mother in law, Pat Ereth; and my two priceless angels, Everest and Belle. A big thanks goes to my family in China who send countless blessings to me. Thank you all for being in my life.”

Through holistic learning and practice, Carly found freedom in her life. “I feel more secure and knowledgeable and have more confidence in my ability to help my family when they have trouble with their health. I am very grateful for what God has given me.” Carly and her husband opened Soul Matrix Natural Healing in Sept 2014. They provide not only all types of metaphysical products, but also different types of workshops for people who are looking for assistance on their spiritual paths. At Soul Matrix Healing, guests will find group practices for meditation, oracle cards reading, past life regression, mediumship

Protein, Carbohydrates and Fat: Creating a Balanced Meal Plan By Mandi Mazer

W

hat is the best way to lose weight and stay healthy? Should a person count calories, go vegan, low fat, gluten free, or cut out carbohydrates? With so much conflicting advice it is hard to decide what is best. However, recently, most educated health professionals, nutrition experts, personal trainers and coaches are finally getting it right: eating clean, healthy, nutrient filled foods while making sure that you are getting protein, fat and carbohydrates at every meal. When you eat protein, fat and carbohydrates together in a meal, they promote a greater sense

of fullness and satisfaction. When you eliminate a group, such as fat, a person will overcompensate by eating too much of something else, like too many unhealthy carbohydrates. Concentrate on filling your plate with high quality, nutrient dense foods. Concentrate on the quality not the quantity of food. Fill your plate with healthy carbohydrates like quinoa, yams, brown rice, vegetables, or oatmeal. Healthy fats are things like nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil. Healthy proteins are lean chicken, turkey, fish, beef, wild game, or eggs.

DAY THREE Breakfast: 2-3-egg omelet with spinach and mushrooms and avocado. Lunch: 6-8 ounces of wild salmon with a spinach salad Dinner: Stir-fried chicken and vegetables over top of brown rice

REFINED ADVICE

Low Energy? Gut Problems? Skin Conditions?

foods are the culprits. According to James Breneman M.D., former chairman of the Food Allergy Committee of the American College of Allergy, approximately 60 per cent of all undiagnosed symptoms are due to underlying food allergies. By eating the foods that work for you, you can experience new levels of vitality and optimism as well as eliminate symptoms that may have been plaguing you for years.

WEYBURN NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE CAN HELP! We are the local expert for assessing and treating chronic health concerns. We are very excited to announce our latest addition to the clinic. Charlene Cretin, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN), has joined our team. She is an expert in creating custom, personalized, and easy to follow meal plans for you and your family. She is extremely well educated in gut health and food sensitivities. Working alongside our naturopathic doctor, Dr. Toby Bridgman, Charlene is dedicated to helping you improve your health. Low energy, gut problems, skin conditions (and many other symptoms) can be related to food sensitivities, which are prevalent in society today. People visit naturopathic doctors hoping to achieve optimum health, and often find that food sensitivities and allergies are the culprit behind many of their symptoms. However, the journey isn’t over once food sensitivities are discovered. Learning what to eat, what to avoid and how to incorporate different foods is a challenge for many people. One option to pinpoint potential food sensitivities is an elimination diet, which Charlene will design and guide you through. Another option is a food allergy blood test, done by Dr. Bridgman. Based on these test results, Charlene will provide specific dietary information and create a personalized meal plan with recipes that can be easily incorporated into your family’s diet. WOULDN’T I ALREADY KNOW IF I HAVE A FOOD ALLERGY? Food is the stuff of life, yet sometimes the foods you eat are the cause of ill health and dysfunction. Often, it is hard to know which

18    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

When we think of a food allergy, we tend to think of someone who breaks out in a rash or has difficulty breathing when eating a particular food, such as nuts. This is called an immediate hypersensitivity reaction. While this is the most well-known type of food allergy, it is not the most common. Most food allergies are of the delayed hypersensitivity type in which symptoms appear anywhere from hours to days after eating the offending food. If the food is one that you eat frequently, the repeated exposure can lead to a constant level of symptoms that begins to seem normal. You may not even realize that you could feel much better than you do. A delayed food sensitivity can cause a number of conditions: ADD, ADHD, chronic digestive complaints, skin rashes/changes, frequent colds and flues, asthma, ear infections, joint pain, muscle pain, fatigue, and issues with blood sugar regulation. CAN I BE ALLERGIC TO SOMETHING I EAT ALL THE TIME? It is common for people to be allergic to foods that they eat frequently. Often a person will find that the foods they crave the most are the very ones causing their symptoms. There are a number of reasons for this. When faced with a challenge, such as a food you are allergic to, your body produces higher levels of stress hormones. These stress hormones may give you a temporary boost in energy and effectiveness that can mask symptoms. This fuels cravings for the very foods that are causing your symptoms. The high levels of stress hormones can lead to other problems.

Sanderson, there has never been a better time to stop by and see what’s in store at Old Fashion Foods. “Our store has changed a lot in six months,” says Christy. “We want everyone to know we’re way more than vitamins, but we still have all the vitamins you’ll ever need.” The store is a cornucopia of healthy, natural products for the body and mind. Besides vitamins, you’ll find all kinds of health foods,

gluten-free products galore, essential oils, and natural skin and hair care. There are also unique and hard-to-find spices, flours, pastas and proteins, plus books, salt lamps and confectionary. “We’ve added a new, larger cooler loaded with new products such as kombucha, plus a great variety of butters and drinks,” says Christy. “We have made a lot of changes in the past few months, and added many new things in-store.”

Whether you pop by for something specific, or just want to check it out, the staff at Old Fashion Foods are friendly and knowledgeable. “We are the only health food store in Weyburn,” says Christy. “Our staff and their knowledge set us apart from anywhere else in town that sell vitamins.” Christy and the team take the time to ask the right questions so customers get what will give them the greatest benefit. Plus, the store offers a variety of vitamins for every lifestyle and budget, so there is an option for everyone. And, to get an even bigger bang for your buck, Old Fashion Foods has a customer appreciation day the first Monday of every month. Customers receive 15% off regular priced items, and the store stays open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to make sure everyone gets a chance to stop by.

“Our staff and their knowledge set us apart from anywhere else in town that sell vitamins.” For those looking to start on a heathier road in 2016, manager Stefanie Kilberg has a few tips to share. “Start with your diet and make some simple changes like eating more whole foods. Green vegetables, colourful fruit, and more nuts can help a lot,” says Stefanie. “More water and less red meat is always a good idea too.” Getting more exercise and more sleep, and adding a high quality vitamin, a source of Omega 3 and 6, and a good probiotic are also great ways to make a change in 2016. Located at 405 Souris Avenue NE, the staff at Old Fashion Foods is ready to get you started on a healthy journey. They’re open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the first Monday of every month. TRAVELSCAPES

Panama Canal A bucket list cruise By Lorena Squires

P

anama, a gorgeous country in Central America, is draped in protected rainforests, teeming with wildlife and is aflutter with bird species—essentially it’s an ecological gold mine. But in addition to these natural wonders, Panama is possibly most noted for the Panama Canal, an astonishing feat of engineering and construction.

of jungle rivers and boggy terrain, the narrow isthmus was all that separated the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This land bridge between Central and South America caused insurmountable challenges to world trade as ships would have to sail thousands of additional miles around the dangerous Cape Horn enroute to the trade centres in the East.

The 50 mile isthmus of Panama was once difficult to navigate as travelers were faced with traversing a tangle

Out of these difficulties arose the vision of a canal—the Panama Canal—one of the world’s most notable peacetime

undertakings. Since it’s opening in 1914, the Panama Canal has presented an affordable passageway between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, thus contributing to streamlined shipping routes, economic growth to the region, and growing tourism infrastructure. The growth of the tourism industry affords anyone a chance to jump on board a cruise ship and see the wonders of the Panama Canal along with many amazing stops along the way. A 14 day

full canal transit cruise would likely be considered the most traditional way to see it all, with the voyage starting in Miami or Fort Lauderdale and finishing in San Diego or Los Angeles (or vice versa). This itinerary presents a cruise that is attractive to a wide range of people with varying interests. For example, the beach lover can slip into some flip flops and find a sandy beach at one of Caribbean or Mexico ports of call, an outdoor sports enthusiast can hike, or bike or kayak, the naturalist can bird watch, sight a monkey or glide through the rain forest treetops in an Aerial Tram in Costa Rica, the historian and culture lover will soak up the history and architecture of Cartagena, Columbia. A side note for jewelry loving ladies, Columbia is well noted for their gorgeous emeralds. The canal portion of the trip focuses on the transit itself of course, appealing to those interested in engineering, construction, education and those just wanting to know “how it was made”. Lecturers onboard the ship will help to paint a vivid picture of the struggles and

successes that when all strung together, resulted in this achievement. Many extraordinary events and sensations will be seared into one’s memory bank on this cruise itinerary—the warm Caribbean waters washing over cold toes, the gentle breeze on the deck of the ship and happy feet nicely released from their winter protection and buried in soft white sand on one of the cruise line’s private islands enroute to Columbia. Visit the historic Fort of San Felipe de Barajas in Cartagena and envision the scenes from the movie “Romancing the Stone” where Michael Douglas wrestles with a giant croc on the stone walls of this fort. World Heritage status has been bestowed upon the port, fortresses and monuments in Cartagena and the pastel colored Spanish colonial buildings in Cartagena’s walled quarter are a pretty reminder of past times. Although each port of call will enliven some level of excitement, none will match the thrill of a passenger’s first approach toward the famous Gatun locks on the Atlantic side. With an early morning passage through the Limon Bay breakwater into calm waters, the ship will slide quietly toward the canal—jockeying to get in line for the pre-arranged transit time. Cruise passengers would be well advised to rise early and grab a spot in the outdoor viewing area opened up to the guests for this momentous event. In the quiet of the morning, as the mist is still lifting from the jungle tree tops nearby, the silence will only be broken by an overture of intoxicating bird song. Only once the cruise ship has been boarded by the mandatory specialized pilot (to work with the ship’s Captain) and the gargantuan tow cables have been strung from the ship to mules on land (locomotives used to assist in a safe

30    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

passage) can the process of transiting the locks continue. Many cruise lines offer commentary delivered via loud speaker by a historian or trained guide—cruise line guests are immersed in the learning of interesting facts and details about the canal, from the first visions of the project, to the planning, cost, heartache and the final successful outcome that they are now experiencing. Excitement is fueled by the morning coffee stations set up on the outside decks of the ship and traditional Panama rolls are served. These delicious pastries are filled with a lemon cream filling and are lightly dusted with icing sugar and one is never enough of these little delights. So, with coffee in one hand and two Panama rolls in the other, passengers can witness this awe inspiring man made marvel as the cruise ship fits snuggly into the first lock and is raised 85 feet via three locks in total, and finally is delivered into

the awe inspiring and beautiful Gatun Lake in the middle of a rain forest. And the journey doesn’t end there—the all day transit will take you past lush islands as you push toward the Culebra Cut, over the Continental Divide, through the Pedro Miguel Locks, Miraflores Lake and lastly to the exit down on the Pacific Ocean level via the Miraflores Locks and out to sea from under the Bridge of the Americas. As your cruise ship continues the journey northward, now in the Pacific Ocean, travellers should watch for whales and dolphins looking to perform for an audience. Central American stops on the Pacific side could include Nicaragua or Guatemala, however; almost all of the itineraries will visit Costa Rica and also enjoy stops along the Mexican Riviera before disembarking in San Diego or Los Angeles. Check one off the bucket list folks—this is one unforgettable cruise experience.

Renovations

– For resale or your own enjoyment – Small Change $$ can bring about Big Change By Susan Gellert

D

oes your home need a facelift? Are you tired of looking at the same old thing or do you want it spruced up to sell? Worried about what it will cost and if you can make it all work?

television full of reality shows featuring renovations of every size it’s easy to come up with ideas but unfortunately what unfolds in an hour on TV is generally a much more time and labour intensive process in reality.

Busting over budget is a reoccurring fear for most people when they are considering a renovation. Whether your budget is $5,000 or $50,000 it can be difficult to take everything into account right from the start. With Primetime

Fortunately with some strategic planning, a lot of thought on what you really need or want in the end and research about design, materials, timing, and contractors you can cut costs without cutting corners. Once you’ve done your homework, make

32    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

AT HOME

your decisions based on what you want and what you can afford. KITCHEN: In the kitchen consider increasing efficiency instead of size. Renovate to add more storage to underutilized spaces. Perhaps a change in fixtures or cabinet hardware is what is needed to change the look of your space. Sometimes paint and a new backsplash can make all the difference and new countertops or cabinets will completely change the face of your kitchen.

BATHROOMS: These tend to date the quickest. Ask anyone who has moved into a home with a light pink or green toilet, tub and sink and you will understand. Choose neutrals and simple fixtures. Add splashes of colour with accessories to personalize the space. LIGHTING: Fixtures and finishes become dated and often a switch from an old chandelier to a new lighting fixture makes all the difference. Ensure the fixtures match the general theme of your home. If you have a rustic home perhaps the oil rubbed bronze finish; in a contemporary home opt for the clean lines of black or stainless steel. FLOORING: Removing worn carpets or sanding and staining old hardwood will make a huge difference to any room. Neutral woods or laminate can change the entire “feel” of a room without breaking the bank. PAINT: A new coat of paint can change the look of a room completely. Lighter

colours can make the room look bigger and brighter and darker hues can add warmth and dimension. Just because a project is expensive doesn’t mean it will pay back more. Often, minor improvements can yield major dividends for resale and major satisfaction for homeowners. A “facelift”—painting, refinishing surfaces, and upgrading appliances and fixtures— will often return more than a full redesign. The key to spending less is spending it wisely and ultimately design and product selection are key. Just as your home’s cost should be in line with your neighborhood, your improvements should be in line with the value of your home. Start by making a list of your families must have’s and then look at how Small Change $$$ can bring about Big Changes. Consult experts in your community for advice and quotes on making your renovation the best value for your hard earned money.

yler Vennard of VennX Carpentry got his start in carpentry as a young fellow who helped his uncle out during vacations. “I would stay with my uncle over the summer and work for him. It was a great experience. I always enjoyed building things for people and seeing the final product when it was all done,” he recalls. It was that favourable experience that prompted Vennard to seek out carpentry as his trade of choice after graduating from high school. In 2009, Vennard stepped out on his own and started his own business serving the people of Weyburn, Estevan and area. With a crew of two other talented journeyman carpenters, VennX Carpentry specializes in exterior carpentry for residential builds and renovations. Whether looking for a new garage, gazebo,

Don’s Plumbing and Heating provides quality workmanship for residential and commercial properties. Whether doing a home repair or a major install in a new business like the Travelodge; the team at Don’s always puts their best foot forward. “We make every effort to offer ultimate customer satisfaction. Our goal is to do the job professionally, neatly and safely,” states Hastings. He adds that the entire team at Don’s strive to maintain their reputation of honesty and integrity. Hastings recognizes that there are times when things don’t go quite as planned and the client is not as happy as they hoped. When this takes place, Don’s Plumbing is very prompt in doing an evaluation of the situation and coming up with a solution that is efficient and satisfying for the customer. “We will do our very best to make sure they are happy with the outcome. We really care about every job we do.” According to Hastings, much of the success of the business comes from the quality of people that they have on staff. “When we first started we had about seven or eight people on board with us; now we have 21 employees. We are definitely one big family here. We hire for the long term and when we hire someone, we want to see them succeed,” he comments. At Don’s Plumbing employees receive support to help them establish a great career in the trades. Opportunities are available to participate in apprenticeship programs in three areas: sheet metal, refrigeration and plumbing. ary Tribiger, owner of Advanced Sewer Restoration, started the company in June of 2014 after working in trenchless re lining for more than 10 years. “I kept seeing the same problem’s here over and over and I knew there were better options.” With a new and better option in mind, Gary contacted Nu Flow and became the licensee for Southeast Saskatchewan. Advanced Sewer Restoration does residential, commercial and industrial work—anywhere with aging infrastructure that is starting

to fail. Nu Flow’s patented technologies restore corroded or eroded piping systems without the costly expense and disruption from a traditional pipe replacement. During a typical repipe, the failed pipes are removed, which causes destruction and inconvenience to the property. Replacing the pipe may not always extinguish the root of the problem, so the new pipe system will inevitably suffer the same fate. That is why Nu Flow’s no-dig pipe liners are the preferred, longterm solutions. The liners come with a 10 year limited manufacturer’s warranty but “they are tested to last 50 years,” says Tribiger.

Reline Before Cleaning

Nu Flow’s pull in place pipe liner restores corroded and damaged drain, waste and vent piping systems. The epoxy liner is an efficient and effective way to seal and protect the pipes from deterioration which can last even longer than a new pipe. The pipe cleaning and restoring process is safe and simple and can be applied wherever drain plumbing systems are installed. “We can almost always use the existing clean out to access the pipes; we don’t have to break up any concrete or anything like that,“says Tribiger. “Everything should look the same when we leave as when we arrived. It’s the only product I’m aware of that can be done that way. Most products require large inversion equipment, or digging on either end to pull a line into place.” Once you call for a quote, Advanced Sewer Restoration does a line inspection with video to access the damage and make a plan. The video assessment process can also be useful for home inspection purposes and can give

prospective purchasers a better idea of the houses infrastructure. The in-place pipe restoration process is an economical and efficient alternative to traditional pipe system replacement. Our technology allows us to restore and Re-Nu aged, corroded piping systems to a “better than new” condition without removing them. The epoxy liner installed to the pipes’ interior will seal and protect the system from further deterioration, dramatically extending the life of the piping systems. Advanced Sewer Restoration looks forward to providing the least invasive and highest quality solutions to their clients. Call today for more information or to get a quote. Don’t replace! REFINED ADVICE

Switching Your Mortgage to

WHY SHOULD I SWITCH? There are a number of reasons why it’s wise to switch your mortgage using the services of an RBC Mobile Mortgage Specialist. Of course the obvious would be to reduce your interest rate which could potentially save you thousands in interest costs. Another reason people switch is to help improve their cash flow which allows them to free up funds for other uses such as investing or putting money away for retirement. WHY CHOOSE RBC? An RBC Mobile Mortgage Specialist offers helpful expert advice that will assist you in making the right choices for you. Mortgages are not a ‘one-size fits all’ product. Everyone is at different stages and places in their lives, therefore a mortgage should be customized to fit the specific needs of the client. Whether your goal is to pay your mortgage off as soon as you can or to use equity to pay off other debt; we tailor a solution that’s right for you and your current situation. HOW EASY IS IT TO SWITCH MY MORTGAGE? When you decide to switch to RBC®, we will contact your present mortgage

provider and do everything for you. It’s that simple. We take care of all the communication with your previous lender. WHAT IS THE COST OF SWITCHING? Depending on the charges that your current institution will levy, RBC ® can reduce and sometimes even eliminate the cost of switching your mortgage. We try to make the entire process as headache-free as possible. ARE THERE PENALTIES TO SWITCHING OVER? If a closed term mortgage is broken before its maturity date, your present bank will charge you a pre-payment penalty. Such penalties are usually the greater of three month’s interest or the interest rate differential. IS SWITCHING MY MORTGAGE WORTH IT? If the rate you get by switching saves you more than the amount of the penalty or if you’re concerned that interest rates may rise and you might not be able to negotiate a similar rate when the mortgage comes due; it’s well worth it in the end. CAN MY MORTGAGE BE CUSTOMIZED TO FIT MY NEEDS? When you have 20 per cent equity in your property, the RBC Homeline Plan® gives you the option of choosing both fixed and variable interest rates. You are also allowed up to five mortgage segments with five credit line segments. Each segment can be tracked and recorded separately which may make things

easier when completing your taxes. It also gives you the option to stagger your maturity dates which can help you manage interest rate risk and choose a comfortable repayment plan. YOU DESERVE THE BEST Mortgages can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if not set up properly. You work hard for your money. I believe that you deserve to have an expert advise you on how to manage your mortgage efficiently. WINDOW TIP WHAT IS THIS WATER ON MY WINDOWS? Water or frost on windows is condensation. Condensation is formed when warm moist air comes in contact with cooler dry air. An example of this is when a bathroom mirror “steams up” after a hot shower. Just like that mirror, the inside or outside of your window can sweat or fog because of temperature differentials.

WHAT CAUSES IT? The moisture in the air causes condensation. The insulation and construction materials used today are designed to keep cold air outside. While energyefficient window designs and weather-stripping keep cold air outside, they also keep warm moist air inside. Older windows were less efficient and consequently allowed moisture to escape. If you didn’t have as much condensation before replacing your old windows, it’s probably because they were drafty. Good windows and insulation all create barriers to the air exchange of a home. When combined with the additional water vapor from showers, cooking, or from clothes dryers not vented to the outside, the result is excess moisture and a high relative indoor humidity level.

cross Europe and North America, the 1920s was a decade full of hope and renewal. The Great War was over and people everywhere were starting to rebuild their lives and looking forward to a better future. In Weyburn, a group of young men harnessed this energy and channeled it towards improving the lives of everyone in the community, creating The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn in 1922.

The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn has remained a constant in the community.

Fast forward nearly a century; Weyburn is a vastly different place. The town is now a city, cars have replaced horsedrawn wagons on the streets and oil wells have sprung up in the surrounding fields. However, through all the changes,

Over the years, the club has been instrumental in raising $2 million to support worthwhile local projects and organizations. These include The Don Mitchell Spray Park and Paddling Pool, the Weyburn Outdoor Pool, the Triple

C Centre, the Tommy Douglas Centre, the Pioneer Women statue, the Music Festival, the Weyburn Caravan and the Salvation Army as well as various forms of minor sports. “The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn has been a longtime supporter of the Wor-Kin Shop,” says Andria Brady, Executive Director. “Each year, they provide Weyburn Red Wings season tickets so our participants can enjoy some local hockey. When we were fundraising to build our new building, The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn was one of the first organizations to make a major commitment of $25,000. Our agency is certainly thankful to have such a dedicated community group like this in Weyburn. Even though they all have

busy lives, their members never hesitate to step up whenever they are needed. The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn embodies what volunteerism is all about.” To raise funds, the club organizes various fun-filled functions throughout the year, such as the Halloween Cabaret, November’s Comedy Night or the Hospital Foundation Supper in July. Their biggest annual fundraisers are the Christmas Tree Lot and the Community Auction in April. The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn is now accepting

donations of good and services from local businesses, to be auctioned off between April 9th and 30th. The range of items is vast, ensuring that there is something for everyone. “Our club motto is “We Serve”,” explains Kurtis Schwindt, Club President. “Our events are not just about raising funds for community projects, they are also about providing services that would otherwise not be here.” In 2014, the province recognized the longstanding work and achievements of The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn, naming it one of the first four recipients

of the new Premier’s Award which was instituted to honour those organizations that have made a substantial contribution to improving life in their community. The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn currently has 25 active members and an equal number of associate members. THE STRENGTH OF

Saskatchewan

A Message from Dustin Duncan, MLA

s Saskatchewan people settle in to the new year, we have a lot of reasons to be optimistic. While we face some challenges due to factors out of our control, such as the drop in the price of oil, our economy is resilient and diversified and will help us to meet the challenges ahead and keep Saskatchewan strong this year and beyond.

We only have to look back at the year that just ended to see Saskatchewan’s strength in times of uncertainty. Despite weakening resource prices during the past year, Saskatchewan remained at or near the top among Canadian provinces on many economic fronts. For instance, by the close of 2015 we were on track for another year of record employment, with nearly 575,000 people employed during the year. In fact employment numbers were gaining strength as the year ended, with 7,200 more people working in November 2015 than the previous November—an increase of 1.3% which was double the national average. Saskatchewan currently has the lowest unemployment rate in Canada at 5.5%—well below the national average of 7.1%. And over the past 12 months our population has grown by over 12,000. Continued population and job growth during a downturn in the energy sector is a big change from a few years ago when similar circumstances would have led to job losses in every part of the economy. Today, 85% of Saskatchewan’s Gross Domestic Product is generated outside of the oil and gas sector. While our local economy has been hurt by the weak global price for oil, other sectors have helped to keep the economy strong. Agriculture continues to play an important role in the local and provincial economy. Agricultural exports hit a record $13.9 billion last year—the fourth consecutive record setting year. Strong cattle prices pushed livestock cash receipts to nearly $3 billion, the highest level on record and 64% higher than the five year average. Several trade agreements complete or

nearing completion, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement as well as an agreement with the European Union bode well for the future of Saskatchewan agriculture. But we know the continuing weakness in the price of oil has had an impact. We are especially seeing this in southeast Saskatchewan. Our government has worked hard to set the right kind of environment and business climate to encourage growth. We’ve tried to get right the things government can control, and it seems we’ve been successful in this. Late last year the Fraser Institute ranked Saskatchewan, for the third year in a row, as the best Canadian province, and the eighth best jurisdiction in the world, for investing in the oil and gas industry. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business also commended our government’s progress on cutting unnecessary red tape. Unnecessary red tape adds about $11 billion in hidden costs to businesses across Canada. Premier Brad Wall and Economy Minister Bill Boyd have made it a priority to have stable and predictable rules and regulations for industry and business owners. We are actively looking for ways to further support the energy industry and businesses to attract more investment and help put people back to work as quickly as possible. Our government hopes to make an announcement in that regard in the very near future.

Despite the challenges in front of us, we can be confident and optimistic about the future. The past year is such a strong reminder of the resilience and strength of our local and provincial economies. Most of all, it’s a great example of the strength of our people. Dustin Duncan, MLA

wayze’s has always been quick to respond to a job. In the 2014 flood season that devastated the South East part of the province, the RM of Moosomin saw numerous washouts. anticipating the need for supplies and equipment. They kept the RM foreman, council members and administration up to date on the job process. This very large repair, that was jointly coordinated with the Swayze team and that of the RM, had the water line supply restored, the culvert installed and the road repaired in just nine days from the day it washed out. This was an amazing feat in an area that was so devastated by the flooding.

The flood waters washed out both an 1800mm culvert and the road way and severed the Town of Fleming’s water supply. Swayze’s was contacted by the RM immediately and they were on site within a few hours. Jerry met members of the RM council on site and together a plan was made plan to repair the washout. Mobilization of the equipment and employees began the same day and the work commenced the following day.

In 2015 Swayze completed another job on a 2014 flood damaged site. Jerry and Randy came up with a design where they took a wooden box culvert and replaced it with a low level crossing made from concrete. This project took approximately two weeks to finish and the completed area is superb.

They were meticulous in their work site and kept the project rolling by

REFINED ADVICE

Steps for a Successful Year-End

Y

ear end for a large portion of businesses is December 31st. You have worked hard all year and now it’s time to finalize your numbers and file your taxes. There are several taxes that need to be filed and it is important to file all of these on time to avoid paying penalties.

GETTING YOUR FILE YEAR-END READY FOR THE ACCOUNTANT OR TAX SERVICE: RECORD ALL SALES AND PAYMENTS Make sure to record all sales that have been completed by the end of the last month in your year-end. In order for the sale to be deemed completed the items must be delivered and accepted or the service completed. Record all payments received and print a year end accounts receivable listing. Take note of all accounts over 90 days and determine if they are collectible then let the person looking at your file know of any accounts you think you may not get paid for so your accounts receivable can be adjusted for this. Year end is also a good time to review credit limits and your client’s payment habits and make appropriate adjustments. PAYROLL REMITTANCES AND WCB With completion of your final payroll

of the year T4’s need to be processed and sent to your employees and a payroll summary must be sent to the Receiver General. The deadline for this is Monday February 29, 2016. If you use subcontractors in your business you need to issue T4A’s or a T5018 slip. This is also a good time to complete your annual payroll return for The Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board which is due the 28th of February. ENTERING VENDOR/SUPPLIER INVOICES AND EXPENSES Make sure to enter all invoices for the year including invoices for the last month of the year that you have not yet paid. Don’t forget your fuel bill, Sasktel, Sasktel Mobility, Sask Power, Sask Energy, and the City of Weyburn water bill. Enter these bills and reconcile the accounts to your vendor statements and then take a copy to keep for yourself to pay next month and send your originals to your tax professional. INVENTORY If your business has inventory make sure to do a physical count either the last day of the year or the first day of the following year. Set a reminder on your calendar. Adjust your inventory balances accordingly and make note of waste items, damaged items or items that have expired or are obsolete. Provide a copy of this count with your year end. BANK LOANS You may have been receiving a monthly loan balance or you may receive an annual statement, you may have to

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

request a statement. If you have not entered any interest adjustments for the year make one adjustment at the year end. If you have entered interest amounts all year just record the final month. BANK ACCOUNTS, CREDIT CARDS Make sure all your accounts are reconciled for the last month of the year as well as the first month of the following year. Your tax professional requires this information to ensure that income and expenses are claimed in the correct year. To save yourself money sort your items out and match them to the bank statement. The more accurate the information you can provide your tax professional the smoother your year-end will be.

Manage Your Money or Let it Manage You By Susan Gellert

For many people the concept of conscious spending is a foreign one. Most people have put thought into saving or at least wishing they had something to save but often put it off because of lack of funds. The key to saving is conscious spending. 58    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

I

t may seem obvious to some people but for others the thought of evaluating every purchase to determine if it fits with predetermined needs, values and long term goals is not something they have learned, been encouraged to do or even thought much about. Every year as tax season rolls around there seems to be a small window where people reflect on money, either how to get more or how to spend less. A tax professional, bookkeeper or financial planner can help you see some of the ways you can manage both of those things. Conscious spending allows you to decide exactly where your hard earned money goes and it opens the door for intentional saving and investing as well. If your spending plan is long term then you’ll be able to pay yourself first by automatically saving and investing part of all your earnings. Once you have your spending habits where you want them to be there are many professional services available to help you make the most of your investments. The first step is to decide what is important to you and stick to your plan. Conscious spending leads to conscious saving which really means you are managing your money—it’s not managing you.

The following ideas can help you understand the concept of conscious spending all year round. • Determine what you really want and need. Identify what is most important to you. At its root conscious spending is about choosing to spend money on things that are meaningful and fit your goals and spending less on what doesn’t fit. Once you know what is important and what your goals are, align your spending to match your plan. • Define and track your spending. Mindless spending can add up to thousands of dollars a year. Spend a month or even two tracking every dollar

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

you spend and then review your habits and cut down or remove expenses that don’t align with your goals. • Control your cash outflow by spending intentionally. Before making a purchase stop and ask yourself some questions. Do I need this today? Why do I want this? Can it wait? Often if you ask the questions and walk away from an impulse purchase it is easier to make decisions that will move you toward your goals instead of away from them.

It’s that Time of Year Again

S

pring is coming and so is tax time. The tax planning professionals at Cogent Chartered Professional Accountants LLP have plenty of advice to share for business owners preparing for the upcoming tax season. To get the best advice from a tax advisor, you need to make sure you have all the information they will need to assess your situation. “Ensure you provide everything including slips, expenses, and unregistered investment statements to your tax advisor, for both your business and your personal taxes,” says Ted Hillstead, Senior Partner. “Without all your information, your tax advisor cannot provide accurate advice. Without the full picture, your advisor may not be able to save you as much money as they could with more information.” With all of your records available, a tax advisor can assess what your circumstances are, and devise a strategy that ensures you’re taking advantage of every deduction and credit available.

By Brooke Thalgot

Photos Images By Gillies

The professionals at Cogent also recommend tax planning throughout the year, not just at tax time. “We advise business owners to work with their accountant, lawyer and investment advisor to make sure business decisions consider taxation before proceeding,” says Britany Burnett. “Keeping your team in the know means you can take all factors into consideration when making financial decisions.” At a minimum, business owners should talk to their accountant in the last quarter of the calendar year, and the last quarter of their fiscal year. 2016 is also bringing new tax changes that will impact both business owners and individual tax payers. A new top tax bracket has been created for individuals earning more than $200,000. The federal tax rate for those in this new bracket has increased by 4%. As well, the tax rate for corporations with passive income has increased by 3%. Tax rates for small business corporations with net income under $500,000 and for middle income

earners between $45,000 and $90,000 will be lower than in previous years. No matter the size of your business or your personal income, it’s always a good idea to speak to a professional about your tax situation. REFINED ADVICE

Wills, Powers of Attorney and Health Care Directives There are three important legal documents to consider in an estate planning exercise: WILL A will is the document in which the maker of the will (the testator) does the following: a) appoints one or more executors to administer the estate upon his/ her death and b) identifies the beneficiaries of the estate—the persons who are to be given the estate and in what amounts or shares. To be valid a will must be witnessed by two persons who are both present at the time the testator signs the will. The only exception to the rule requiring two witnesses is when a will is written and signed entirely in the handwriting of the testator. An unwitnessed will all in the handwriting of the testator is called a holograph will. A will takes effect only when the testator dies. Prior to the death of the testator the executors have no authority over the estate of the testator.

Remember that marriage or living common law with another person for two years automatically revokes a will unless the will specifically states that it has been made in contemplation of the marriage or the passage of time resulting in a common law relationship. POWER OF ATTORNEY A power of attorney is the document in which one person (the donor) gives another person (the attorney) general authority to make financial and property decisions and/ or personal care decisions for the donor. The power can be given to one or more attorneys. A power of attorney terminates upon the death of the donor. A power of attorney is used to plan for the possibility of incompetency of the donor. In the absence of a power of attorney it is necessary for next of kin to apply to the Court to be named as a property and/or personal guardian to make decisions for the incompetent person. This is usually an expensive and time consuming process. HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVE An advanced health care directive, sometimes referred to as a living will is the document in which a person gives someone else authority to make health care decisions in the event that person is no longer capable of making health care decisions. The person given the authority is called a proxy. An advanced health care directive usually contains instructions to the proxy not to take measures to prolong the person’s life in the event the person has lost all enjoyment of their life and there is no possibility of recovery from a terminal condition.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

A NOTE REGARDING PROBATE OF A WILL Probate of a will is when an application is made by the executors to the Court to confirm their authority as executors. Probate of a will is mandatory if the testator died owning land with no other person also on the title. Even if the testator died owning no land a will may need to be probated in order for the executors to take control of assets of the estate. For instance, if the testator dies leaving a significant sum of money in a financial institution the financial institution will likely require a probate of the will prior to releasing the funds to the executor(s).
