The experts at Prairie Animal Health Centre have been serving the southeast’s animals, big and small, for decades. There’s a new team member happy to be working with livestock, pets and their owners in Weyburn.

r. Jeff Bergermann joined the PAHC team in May 2023. “I graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011, and spent a year in the Estevan area before moving to Humboldt where I worked in swine medicine,” says Jeff. “After 11 years of that, I was ready for a new challenge.” Jeff, who hails from the Humboldt area, was looking for a change when he spotted a positing for a position with PAHC. Now, he’s thrilled to be a team member at PAHC, working with large and small animals in the Weyburn clinic three days a week. “Now, I get to do a little bit of everything, and I am really enjoying it. I love learning new things, and as a veterinarian, you do that every day,” he says. When he’s not in the office, Jeff farms and raises cattle with his brother near Humboldt where his parents and siblings reside. “We have 100 head of beef cattle, honeybees and 16 horses,” says Jeff. “I love riding and ranching when I am not at work.” The move to PAHC has been a good one, and Jeff looks forward to working with animals and owners for years to come.

odern farming has evolved into a complex business, far removed from the days of the traditional family farm that combined both income and residence. Today, many farms operate as corporations, encompassing land, equipment, crops, and livestock under one business umbrella. The rationale behind this shift is clear: deferring taxes to enhance cash flow and minimize tax liabilities. Corporations often employ preferred shares as part of incorporating an

existing proprietorship or partnership farm in order to defer taxes. However, this strategic approach necessitates careful long-term planning to ensure that when the time comes to cash out and sell the farm, substantial tax bills do not take a toll on your financial stability. The key is to redeem preferred shares over an extended period, thus harnessing tax benefits in the present while devising a futureproof strategy. Unfortunately, I’ve witnessed farming operations blindsided by colossal tax bills, leaving them financially unprepared to meet these obligations. To avoid finding yourself in this precarious situation, early planning is paramount. Young farmers, with decades ahead of them, have a more advantageous position for share redemption than those nearing retirement. Collaborating with a seasoned tax professional now can help safeguard against unforeseen challenges down the road. In the busy world of modern agriculture, strategic planning is no longer a luxury but a necessity. By taking proactive steps today, farmers can optimize their financial future, ensuring that their hard-earned resources are protected and their businesses remain strong for years to come.

VACCINES AREN’T JUST NEEDLES ANYMORE

n animal health, our knowledge of how to vaccinate animals and herds to achieve maximum immune response and therefore protection against disease is constantly evolving. Timing, delivery methods, animal factors, and vaccine components and formulation are all important considerations depending on the disease being targeted. Traditionally, our delivery method for vaccines has been via injection. Injectable vaccines stimulate a whole body immune response, resulting in antibody production in the blood to fight disease. Injectable vaccines provide amazing protection for some diseases, including rabies in all species and blackleg (Clostridial disease) in cattle. Alternately, vaccines can be delivered locally to produce a local immune response. In this case the antibodies protect at the site of infection — such as in the respiratory tract or in the gut. Examples of vaccines given this way are the kennel cough vaccine for dogs, the flu vaccine for horses, and most recently the pneumonia vaccine for cattle. Every species has their weakness, and for cattle it’s their lungs. While it may be no secret to most that the bovine is not an athlete (disregarding some LonghornCorrientes, known to my neighbors as athletes of high jump, distance running and the limbo), few understand the science of why. Cattle are designed and selected for peaceful grazing, not athleticism. Their lungs are relatively

small (compared to the horse), their clearance defenses are weak (compared to the dog), and they are constantly compressed by their highly-evolved and specialized stomach (a superpower in one sense, and a lead balloon in another). Add to these anatomical weaknesses the well-adapted and potent bugs they have to fight: viruses like infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), parainfluenza (PI3), and bacteria like Mannheimia hemolytica and Histophilus somnus. Not only hard to spell and pronounce but each comes with virulence factors to capitalize on the bovine weakness.

(without worry about a “hot” vaccine reaction). Also, by targeting IBR, we get the underlying viral “spark” that can set off the wildfire of pneumonia caused by the bacterial pathogens. Another issue to dance around is maternal immunity. Passed from the cow to the calf in the colostrum, it gives the calf a head start against the pathogens in their environment. It also, unfortunately, initially interferes with that calf’s ability to respond to an injectable vaccine. Enter the new intranasal vaccines. As a practicing veterinarian and passionate supporter of the cattle industry, I am excited by the research I’ve seen on INFORCE, specifically. Data shows the benefit to long-term health outcomes such as feedlot performance, milk production and longevity in the herd, all associated with a reduction in respiratory disease in calves. The intranasal vaccine is flexible enough to deliver at birth (in a herd with pneumonia in really young calves) without worrying about maternal antibody interference, to using on arrival at the feedlot for high-risk green calves

Tenille Arts Born and raised in Weyburn, Tenille Arts wrote her first song at the tender age of 13. First discovered on YouTube in 2009, Tenille relocated to Nashville in 2015 after finishing high school, and released her first single, “Breathe.” In 2016,She won the Emerging Artists Award from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association and was nominated for the Canadian Country Music Association’s Discovery Artist program. The same year, her debut EP was released, and her single “What He’s Into” hit number 47 on the Canadian country music charts. Tenille released her first full-length album, Rebel Child, in 2017, reaching number 45 on the Billboard Top Country Albums sales chart. In 2018, Tenille’s career would hit new heights with her first appearance on ABC’s The Bachelor. That appearance led to a new record deal and a deluxe edition of Rebel Child that charted on Hot Country Songs in the U.S. She released Girl to Girl, her next studio album, in 2021 and was nominated for New Artist of the Year by the ACM Awards, Best New Country Artist by the iHeartRadio Music awards, Female Video and Breakthrough Video of the Year by the CMT Music Awards, and won the AIMP 2022 Rising Artist-Writer of the Year Award.

Dr. Gary Hoium Long-time country veterinarian Dr. Gary Hoium is making a name for himself in Saskatchewan literary circles telling stories from his decades of work as a vet. Like James Herriot’s All Creatures Big and Small, Gary is entertaining readers with funny, heartwarming stories about the many animals he’s worked with since 1984. Born and raised in Midale, he’s sharing the memories of a career well-spent with eager readers in Don't They Kick When You Do That? Stories of a Prairie Veterinarian Vol. 1 and 2.

Tenille has also toured as a opening act for Scotty McCreery, Luke Combs, Jordan Davis, Lee Brice and Lady A, and also headlined her own shows and festival appearances.

Trenna Keating Weyburn’s Trenna Keating has made a name for herself in acting and playwriting. After completing her BFA at the University of Regina, she moved to Toronto to pursue acting while working in casting. She made her big screen acting debut in the Saskatchewan-shot Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart in 2005. Trenna also appeared in Saskatchewan productions Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story, Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie before her big break on Defiance, a U.S-Canadian science fiction television series in 2013. Since then, Trenna has appeared in many television series, including Schitt’s Creek,

Fiction and was shortlisted for 2023 Saskatchewan Book of the Year and the $20,000 Glengarry Book Award.

The former professional golfer on the PGA tour was born and raised in Weyburn. After studying at Boise State University, he finished second as an amateur at the 2005 Edmonton Open. He went pro in 2007, and finished his career with four professional wins and an appearance at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He now works as a golf analyst for TSN Canada.

Guy Gavriel Kay Born in Weyburn and raised in Winnipeg, Guy released his first novel The Summer Tree in 1984. Since then, he has established an incredible literary career, releasing 15 novels in the historical fantasy genre and picking up multiple national and international awards for his work.

iyet was born in a tent and spent her childhood on the ancestral lands of the Kluane First Nation people in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Coming from a family rooted in traditions but tempered with a good sense of adventurous hippie attitudes, Diyet has created a musical presence that is as diverse as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage. She discovered her voice singing on the school bus, went on to acquire a degree in music, then became a published songwriter in Vancouver, BC. When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her Dutch husband, moving back to her village of 90 people without a plan or even a pub to play in. The result of this unlikely career move has been international collaborations, extensive touring and two acclaimed albums (The Breaking Point & When You Were King,) with the third album: Diyet & The Love Soldiers released in 2018 which received nominations for: “Folk Artist

Understanding Your Child's Love Language By Ardell Waldner

oving your children is a journey filled with twists and turns, laughter, and occasional challenges. These little beings come into your life, and all you want to do is love them. However, sometimes, it may seem like your efforts to love them aren’t quite hitting the mark. Children under five can’t tell you their love language clearly, so as parents, we embark on a journey of discovery, much like flying through clouds, feeling our way around. It’s vital to express love to our children in various ways, allowing them to experience the different forms of love: Quality Time, Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, and Gifts. In this discovery phase, it’s essential to incorporate these different love languages into your interactions with your child. Young children thrive on physical touch. Snuggle them in your lap while reading a story—that’s both physical touch and quality time. Play a game of touch football or tag, adding words of affirmation like, “You’re doing a great job! You’re so fast!” The modern world has led to concerns about inappropriate touching, causing parents to limit physical closeness. However, children need physical closeness more than ever. Even during adolescence, they secretly crave that hug at the right moment while avoiding embarrassment in front of friends. As your child grows, consider helping them identify their primary love language through quizzes or simple discussions. Once you know their love language, it’s

like finding a treasure. If it’s quality time, set aside special moments for activities they love. If it’s physical touch, ensure you shower them with hugs and affection. A child with a full “love tank” is easier to handle, and conflicts tend to diminish. When my youngest son and I were battling a lot, I would schedule some quality time with him. We’d play cards, watch his favorite movies, or engage in activities he enjoyed. His primary love language is quality time, and he is a whole new loving person once I fill him up. To integrate the love languages into your relationship with your child:

Acts of Service: Prepare their favourite meal, assist them in cleaning their room or doing their laundry, or simply help with chores they struggle with.

Gifts: It doesn’t have to be a grand gift. Small gestures like picking a flower from the garden or giving a gift certificate for an ice cream sundae can brighten their day.

Physical Touch: Cuddle up for movies or bedtime stories, give hugs and kisses

Quality Time: Establish daily activities or movie nights tailored to your child’s interests, whether it’s swimming or fishing.

Planning matters A solid business plan is vital to any successful venture. You need to define your concept (or know the concept of an existing business), target market, and your unique selling proposition (USP). Make financial projections that show your costs and your revenues. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), Community Futures Sunrise (CF Sunrise), the SK Startup Institute and Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan (WESK) are all excellent resources for business planning.

The law Legal structures in business are important for regulatory and planning purposes. Are you going to be a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation? Each has their advantages and disadvantages, so ensure that you get professional advice on which one works best for you.

Becoming a business Once you have your idea and know the structure of your business, it’s time to register it. The Saskatchewan Corporate Registry through Information Services Corporation is the place you go to register your business name, register for a federal business number and more. You also need a location for your business. You need to check with the City of Weyburn or your municipality about licensing your business and what the regulations and zoning rules are for your planned location.

Money in the bank Once you’re registered, there’s still more financial “stuff” to do. You will need separate bank accounts for your enterprise. Talk to your financial institution to determine what your needs are. Do you need a basic bank account? Do you need a point-of-sale terminal and

cash register? Do you need to accept online payments? Will you need payroll help? You will also have to determine if you need to collect GST and PST. A professional accountant and a banker can help you determine what you need to do. Beyond payment management, you’ll also need to determine your funding needs. What I learned over the last ten years By Ardell Waldner

s I enter my tenth year of business, I must start by thanking all of my clients today and over the years. Being a small business owner, the relationships you make are much more treasured and valuable. When I began this journey, everyone was busy, and the money flowed because we were still in the “boom.” Today, the business world looks a whole lot different. We’re dealing with everything from higher competition for customers to lack of employees, constant price changes on consumables like fuel, food and materials to supply chain breakdown and struggling to get what you need. COVID-19 changed the way we do business. As someone who works with many companies not to mention running my own, I felt that I could share a few tips of how I have weathered the new business landscape.

If I wake in the night with an idea or thought, I will put it in my notes. • If I have back-to-back client meetings and need to remember something, I pause for a moment let the next client know I just need to make a quick note before I forget and again, I utilize my notes app. • We have all had moments in the middle of the night or sitting at dinner with the family where you panic, remembering what you forgot to do. If you can’t fix it until tomorrow, email yourself. For example, I forgot the Thanksgiving turkey needs at least four days to defrost so I emailed myself to take it out when I get home. • Schedule your administration items like reading business emails or invoicing for first thing in the morning so you can take care of the forgotten items and get it out of the way quickly. Set a time limit and schedule it like an appointment. Another time saver— don’t sign up your email for everything just the important companies you need to know about.

TIPS TO HELP YOU GET AHEAD • Don’t let your phone run your day. Use a smartwatch so you can quickly screen calls and messages. You get to decide what is a priority and what isn’t. Use the phone as a tool not a distraction. • Use apps to help you get the job done. If you need to keep track of time, use a time app. If you need to look up prices frequently at your

job site or venue. Save fuel and time. If you can’t go without something, see if you can order for delivery. Often cab companies will pick up and deliver items. • If you’re struggling to hire employees, think about hiring other businesses into your daily life to save time. When I got to a point that I could not keep up I used services to clean my house and prepare my meals. There are several individuals and small companies putting together full meals for a family. All I had to do was pop them in the oven and I could get back to work or spend a bit of time with my children playing a game or talking about their day. • If you need a new skill, pay someone who has done it before to teach you. It will save you so much time and effort allowing you to get back to all the important things. • Use a to-do list but don’t overload it. Put only the most important things on it. Move what didn’t get done to the next day and schedule it if possible. These are just a few ways you can adapt to get the job done.

• We all have time wasters like personal emails to return, Netflix and phone games. Don’t let those things get away from you. Schedule your ‘down time.’ • If you’re struggling to find employees, hire the family. Maybe it’s time to pitch in by picking up a hammer, scheduling orders, and picking up parts. There are many small jobs that can be taken care of without the master skills. • Be organized. Pack your truck or prep the night before a big job. Use checklists to make sure that you have everything, so you are not leaving the

Companies are continually evolving, and the design of their workspaces should follow suit. Residential and commercial office design has become a top priority for employers and employees during recent years in order to maximize productivity and wellbeing of the user. There are many factors incorporated into an office design conducive to the work that needs to be done.

SPATIAL PLANNING Creating a good spatial plan for an office space often seems obvious (just include a desk, chair and maybe a window for a little peek outside). However, companies are no longer going for these cookie cutter spatial models! Identifying the company structure and way in which employees work individually and amongst others is a key factor in laying out a workspace. For example, in larger companies where employees collaborate often there are vastly different considerations than offices where primarily private individual workspaces are required. A company may opt for an open concept layout with a relaxed work culture, or they may require individual work areas with good sound proofing qualities. Doing your research and knowing your company structure is an important starting point to creating a functional layout. FURNISHINGS & CASEWORK It seems obvious that people are most productive when they are comfortable but applying this through appropriate furnishing selection can be a difficult

task. As layouts have evolved, so has the science regarding ergonomics and materiality. Kiteen’s workspace considers all of her daily tasks and creates a functional spatial design to incorporate the specific needs of each task including office products and clothing storage, desk area for editing and a try on area for content creation.

The client had moveable furniture in the existing space and had issues with clients entering the office staff’s space which had little storage or organization. We were able to utilize a built-in desk to create flow and direction, separating the space into individual work zones.

the custom built ins are the key element to the space. they create a focal point while also meeting the task criteria list. custom built ins maxamize the use of a unique space.

We added additional task lighting above some of the work spaces and replaced the front window with a larger window to allow more light to enter and so staff could see customers arriving. We also added new window coverings for daylight control.

OVERALL AESTHETIC

We updated the lighting in the space and added a desk lamp for task lighting. The ceiling light adds ambient lighting and an aesthetic appeal to the space.

We kept the space neutral with natural tones to make it an appealing space for their specific client demographic, which is a key consideration when deciding on overall aesthetic appeal. We also needed to pick durable and easily cleanable finishes since it is located in a rural Saskatchewan landscape.

OVERALL AESTHETIC We incorporated materials and products that reflect Kiteen’s style and her company branding. This is key as it is a backdrop for her social media content and must be on brand to ensure the greatest impact on followers.

First, plan ahead. The best thing you can do for your holiday spending is think about what you need and how much you have to spend. A simple pencil and paper are all you need to get started. It’s more than just a list of who to buy for. Think about all your Christmas expenses such as decorations, travel costs and food for celebrations. Write it all down and set a budget for each. Once you know what you need, you can pay attention to sales, coupons and discounts to help your budget go further. Sign up for newsletters or follow your favourite stores on social media to stay informed about sales and discounts. Remember to shop local, too. You’ll save time and money by shopping close to home. There’s no need to spend money on gas and meals for a trip to the city when you can find it all here. Next, examine the gift list. Sometimes a little creativity can lead to great memories. As my family ‘grew up’, we moved from buying gifts for all the aunts, uncles and cousins to drawing names from a hat. Each member of our extended family had one person to buy for with a set budget, and it’s great fun to find a gift for just one person instead of the pressure of shopping for everyone. As we got even older, we switched to a system where everyone brought a gift suitable for teens to seniors (yes, it is possible!) and we drew numbers to exchange the gifts. It is so much fun scrambling for gifts and the challenge of shopping. We still talk about the presents and the memories! Gifts should also come from more than the wallet—they should come from the heart. If you’re crafty (or even if you’re not) consider making homemade gifts where it works. Handmade
