The heartbeat of the southeast A salute to our farmers

I

n the prairie heartland, where waves of wheat, canola, oats, barley and flax stretch as far as the eye can see, lies the beating heart of our community—our farmers. These hardworking men and women, and their unwavering commitment to the land create a living tapestry that sustains us all. As the sun rises over the prairie, they are already hard at work. They rise before dawn, their boots crunching in the dewkissed grass as they head to the barns and fields. The roosters may crow, but it’s these people who cultivate life from the earth every year, year in and year out. Our farmers work with nature to feed the world. Farming is not merely a job; it’s a calling. It’s a tradition passed down through the generations. Farming binds families together in a timeless cycle of growth and renewal. It’s a heritage that is cherished, a connection to the land that

runs deeper than the roots of the tallest wheat stalk. But farming isn’t just about seeding and harvesting; it’s about nurturing. It’s about caring for fields with thoughtful attention. It’s about protecting them from pests and diseases, while dealing with our unpredictable prairie weather. It’s about long days during harvest, the celebration of a bumper crop, and the optimism needed when faced with a challenge. The importance of agriculture stretches far past Saskatchewan’s borders. Our farmers provide the food for countless supermarkets, kitchen tables and pantries—not just in our own community but across the globe. When we enjoy a slice of golden toast, a chewy cookie, or a juicy steak, it’s because of them. It’s easy to take a trip to the grocery store, forgetting connection between the food we buy and the people that brought

Our farmers deserve our thanks and appreciation for their dedication to ensuring that there is nutritious food there when we need it. Next time you drive past a farmer’s field, take a moment to appreciate the wonder of the place we call home and what it provides to the world. It’s the hard work of our farmers that sustains us, season after season, year after year.

At Weyburn Dodge, we want to extend our genuine appreciation to the hardworking members of the agriculture industry who continue to be the backbone of our community. Your dedication to cultivating the land, raising livestock, and ensuring a steady supply of food and resources is nothing short of admirable. A new face at Prairie Animal Health Centre Say hello to Dr. Jeff Bergermann By Brook Thalgott Photos Big Dog Photography

The experts at Prairie Animal Health Centre have been serving the southeast’s animals, big and small, for decades. There’s a new team member happy to be working with livestock, pets and their owners in Weyburn.

r. Jeff Bergermann joined the PAHC team in May 2023. “I graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011, and spent a year in the Estevan area before moving to Humboldt where I worked in swine medicine,” says Jeff. “After 11 years of that, I was ready for a new challenge.” Jeff, who hails from the Humboldt area, was looking for a change when he spotted a positing for a position with PAHC. Now, he’s thrilled to be a team member at PAHC, working with large and small animals in the Weyburn clinic three days a week. “Now, I get to do a little bit of everything, and I am really enjoying it. I love learning new things, and as a veterinarian, you do that every day,” he says. When he’s not in the office, Jeff farms and raises cattle with his brother near Humboldt where his parents and siblings reside. “We have 100 head of beef cattle, honeybees and 16 horses,” says Jeff. “I love riding and ranching when I am not at work.” The move to PAHC has been a good one, and Jeff looks forward to working with animals and owners for years to come.

Strategic Farming Planning for Tax Efficiency Photos Images By Jon Gillies

M

odern farming has evolved into a complex business, far removed from the days of the traditional family farm that combined both income and residence. Today, many farms operate as corporations, encompassing land, equipment, crops, and livestock under one business umbrella. The rationale behind this shift is clear: deferring taxes to enhance cash flow and minimize tax liabilities. Corporations often employ preferred shares as part of incorporating an

Nancy McMahon

existing proprietorship or partnership farm in order to defer taxes. However, this strategic approach necessitates careful long-term planning to ensure that when the time comes to cash out and sell the farm, substantial tax bills do not take a toll on your financial stability. The key is to redeem preferred shares over an extended period, thus harnessing tax benefits in the present while devising a futureproof strategy. Unfortunately, I’ve witnessed farming operations blindsided by colossal tax bills, leaving them financially unprepared to meet these obligations. To avoid finding yourself in this precarious situation, early planning is paramount. Young farmers, with decades ahead of them, have a more advantageous position for share redemption than those nearing retirement. Collaborating with a seasoned tax professional now can help safeguard against unforeseen challenges down the road. In the busy world of modern agriculture, strategic planning is no longer a luxury but a necessity. By taking proactive steps today, farmers can optimize their financial future, ensuring that their hard-earned resources are protected and their businesses remain strong for years to come.

AgriInvest: • No fees • September 30 of year following participation year: Your Statement A is due • 90 days from date of SCIC letter: Payment needs to be made to receive the matching contribution Stay on top of these dates to manage your farm finances effectively!

Preferred shares in Canada are securities normally issued by corporations as a tax deferral strategy. The shares are “preferred” because these shareholders are preferentially treated over the corporation’s common shareholders.

VACCINES AREN’T JUST NEEDLES ANYMORE

I

n animal health, our knowledge of how to vaccinate animals and herds to achieve maximum immune response and therefore protection against disease is constantly evolving. Timing, delivery methods, animal factors, and vaccine components and formulation are all important considerations depending on the disease being targeted. Traditionally, our delivery method for vaccines has been via injection. Injectable vaccines stimulate a whole body immune response, resulting in antibody production in the blood to fight disease. Injectable vaccines provide amazing protection for some diseases, including rabies in all species and blackleg (Clostridial disease) in cattle. Alternately, vaccines can be delivered locally to produce a local immune response. In this case the antibodies protect at the site of infection — such as in the respiratory tract or in the gut. Examples of vaccines given this way are the kennel cough vaccine for dogs, the flu vaccine for horses, and most recently the pneumonia vaccine for cattle. Every species has their weakness, and for cattle it’s their lungs. While it may be no secret to most that the bovine is not an athlete (disregarding some LonghornCorrientes, known to my neighbors as athletes of high jump, distance running and the limbo), few understand the science of why. Cattle are designed and selected for peaceful grazing, not athleticism. Their lungs are relatively

small (compared to the horse), their clearance defenses are weak (compared to the dog), and they are constantly compressed by their highly-evolved and specialized stomach (a superpower in one sense, and a lead balloon in another). Add to these anatomical weaknesses the well-adapted and potent bugs they have to fight: viruses like infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), parainfluenza (PI3), and bacteria like Mannheimia hemolytica and Histophilus somnus. Not only hard to spell and pronounce but each comes with virulence factors to capitalize on the bovine weakness.

(without worry about a “hot” vaccine reaction). Also, by targeting IBR, we get the underlying viral “spark” that can set off the wildfire of pneumonia caused by the bacterial pathogens. Pretty cool, if you ask me! For help with designing your preventative herd health plan, contact our knowledgeable veterinarians at Prairie Animal Health Centre in Estevan, Weyburn or Carnduff.

Another issue to dance around is maternal immunity. Passed from the cow to the calf in the colostrum, it gives the calf a head start against the pathogens in their environment. It also, unfortunately, initially interferes with that calf’s ability to respond to an injectable vaccine. Enter the new intranasal vaccines. As a practicing veterinarian and passionate supporter of the cattle industry, I am excited by the research I’ve seen on INFORCE, specifically. Data shows the benefit to long-term health outcomes such as feedlot performance, milk production and longevity in the herd, all associated with a reduction in respiratory disease in calves. The intranasal vaccine is flexible enough to deliver at birth (in a herd with pneumonia in really young calves) without worrying about maternal antibody interference, to using on arrival at the feedlot for high-risk green calves

DIYET & THE LOVE SOLDIERS

D

iyet was born in a tent and spent her childhood on the ancestral lands of the Kluane First Nation people in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Coming from a family rooted in traditions but tempered with a good sense of adventurous hippie attitudes, Diyet has created a musical presence that is as diverse as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage. She discovered her voice singing on the school bus, went on to acquire a degree in music, then became a published songwriter in Vancouver, BC. When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her Dutch husband, moving back to her village of 90 people without a plan or even a pub to play in. The result of this unlikely career move has been international collaborations, extensive touring and two acclaimed albums (The Breaking Point & When You Were King,) with the third album: Diyet & The Love Soldiers released in 2018 which received nominations for: “Folk Artist

Of The Year” at The Indigenous Music Awards, “Indigenous Artist Of The Year” at the Western Canadian Music Awards and “Indigenous Songwriter Of The Year” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Diyet & The Love Soldiers is alternative country, folk, roots and traditional with catchy melodies and stories deeply rooted in Diyet’s Indigenous world view and northern life. Diyet sings in both English and Southern Tutchone (her native language) and plays bass guitar. Backed by Love Soldiers: husband and collaborator, Robert van Lieshout (acoustic guitar, drums & percussion) and Juno Award winning producer, Bob Hamilton (electric guitar, pedal steel & mandolin); this trio multi-instrumental trio from the Yukon has a sound that can fill a big stage or capture an intimate room. Bringing the movies back to Weyburn

“For Laura and I raising a family, movie night out was our way of having time for each other and has carried on. A way to get away from reality for a couple of hours.” - Rod Nieviadomy

Weyburn Theatre Community Service Cooperative is working hard to bring the movies back to Weyburn. The non-profit organization has been blown away by the community support received to date. Currently, the group is focusing their fundraising efforts on Seat and Walk of Fame sponsorship opportunities. Here is what some of their recent sponsors had to say about their reasons for supporting the project:

“We need to celebrate the fact that we have a group of leaders in our community that have a vision to make it a better place. Going to a movie is an outing that provides release from everyday life. Watching movies provides social connectivity, improves mental health, enhances emotional regulation, promotes cultural awareness, and draws attention to current social issues. Yeah for Weyburn, the safest, happiest city in Canada!” - Bonita Larson

“It was important for us to support the new theatre because, as lifelong residents of Weyburn, we have felt the void having no theatre has left in our community. We felt it was important to support the new theatre so future residents and children in our community can enjoy everything a theatre has to offer. It’s exciting to know that we will have an opportunity to watch upcoming movies in Weyburn, as opposed to travelling outside our community to enjoy them.” - Halie Anderson, Southern Glass Works Ltd.

If you are interested in joining these community minded individuals and businesses

in supporting the theatre, donations can be made by credit card, PayPal or cheque. For more information, visit their website, scan the QR code or drop them an email.

Farm kids having fun Bandits Distilling has the Saskatchewan spirits you’ll love By Brook Thalgott

In the heart of southeast Saskatchewan, there’s a distillery that embodies the spirit of the land it calls home. Proudly owned by Marnie Gruber and Mike Guest, Bandits Distilling is making a name for themselves as a craft distillery that celebrates its rich farming heritage with spirits that truly are “Saskatchewan.”

Northern Lights Vodka, another jewel in Bandits Distilling’s crown, is a testament to their commitment to purity. Crafted from the highest quality prairie grains and distilled in a 100 per cent copper pot still, this vodka remains unfiltered for natural perfection. Its smooth, crisp, and refined taste makes it perfect, whether enjoyed on the rocks, neat, or in a favourite cocktail.

Their journey into the world of distillation began as an exploration for the best in methods and techniques. Drawing inspiration from legends across the globe, Bandits Distilling embarked on a mission to create spirits that could stand proudly among the world’s best. What emerged from the journey were spirits with flavours as amazing as the prairie landscape itself.

Red Coat Gin offers a unique experience. Handcrafted in small batches, this gin combines exotic botanicals with locally sourced lilac and birch bud, creating a depth of flavours that inspire creativity in cocktail crafting. It’s a taste of the prairie soil and the wild, untamed spirit of the region.

Bandits Moonshine is a high-proof distilled grain spirit that captivates the senses with its smoothness and subtle sweetness. Imagine liquid chocolate, soft and creamy, enriched with the essence of rich cocoa beans. Picture the bold, full-bodied profile of cold brew coffee, leading to a robust, wellbalanced finish. Or savor the sweetness of juicy peaches, perfectly balanced with a cobbler crust finish.

But what truly sets Bandits Distilling apart isn’t just the exceptional quality of their spirits—it’s the values that infuse every bottle. It’s a commitment to the land, to the community, and to the age-old traditions that make Saskatchewan special. With each sip, you’re not just tasting a drink. You’re savoring the essence of the prairies and the spirit of a small town distillery that has transformed ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.

Never go out of style CLASSIC PIECES FOR YOUR CLOSET By Brook Thalgott

F

ashion seems to change on a dime, and it’s hard to keep up with the trends that come and go like the changing seasons. While it's fun to experiment with the latest styles, there are some classic fashion pieces everyone should have handy. These timeless staples not only provide versatility but also ensure you're always ready for any occasion. Whether you live in the “big city” or a “small town,” these essential fashion pieces will keep you looking chic and confident wherever you are.

STYLE & WELLNESS

Also consider what your classic pieces are made from. Natural materials like cotton, linen and leather are fashion staples because they last. Whatever you pick, make sure they are made to last. Classic garments are not meant to be fast fashion—they’re investments for the long-term.

4. TAILORED BLAZER A well-tailored blazer instantly elevates any outfit. Wear it with jeans for a polished casual look, pair it with trousers for a job interview, or add it over a dress for a work event.

suits your face shape and complements your personal style—and keep them well-protected when you’re not wearing them.

9. WHITE SNEAKERS 1. THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS (LBD)

5. BALLET FLATS

There’s a reason Audrey Hepburn’s black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still an iconic look more than 50 years after it appeared. The Little Black Dress is a true wardrobe essential. It’s versatile and can be dressed up or down for work, out for dinner or a formal event. Find one that suits you, and you’ll wear it for years to come.

Comfortable yet stylish, ballet flats are the perfect footwear for daily errands, brunch with friends, or strolling through town. Opt for neutral colors for maximum versatility to pair with dresses, skirts, jeans and more.

2. CRISP WHITE SHIRT A classic white button-down shirt is a timeless piece that can be paired with jeans for a casual look or tucked into a pencil skirt or dress pants for a more formal appearance. It’s a versatile item that works for both work and play, and it looks great any time of year.

3. WELL-FITTED JEANS A great pair of jeans is a foundation for many outfits. Choose a style that suits your body shape—whether it’s skinny, bootcut, wide-leg or straight-leg—and you’ll have a reliable go-to for everyday wear. When you find the perfect pair, buy more than one in different shades of denim. That way, you can have a few options that you know will fit and flatter.

White sneakers have become a fashion staple, offering both comfort and style. They can be worn with dresses, skirts, jeans, or even shorts for a relaxed and trendy look. They’re comfortable and classic for a reason.

6. THE HANDBAG Invest in a well-made, versatile handbag that can carry your essentials and complement your outfits. A neutral color like black, brown, or navy will ensure it matches most of your wardrobe. Choose one that will work for most occasions, and make sure it’s large enough for your needs and sturdy, too.

If you’re thinking about what to ask for this Christmas, a classic handbag is a great gift idea! 7. PENCIL SKIRT A well-tailored pencil skirt is a versatile piece suitable for both professional and social occasions. Pair it with that white shirt we mentioned and heels for work or a tucked-in T-shirt and sneakers for a more casual look.

8. SUNGLASSES A classic pair of sunglasses not only protects your eyes but also adds a touch of glamour to your look. Choose a style that

10. BOOTS Classic boots are essential for style, comfort, and versatility, seamlessly elevating your fashion game. Pick a neutral in a flattering style for you, and you’ll wear them for years and years with jeans, skirts, dresses and more. Honestly, what goes better with a pumpkin spice latte than a chic pair of boots? These classic fashion pieces are like old friends you can rely on. They provide a solid foundation for your wardrobe, ensuring you’re always prepared to look your best, whether you’re attending a local event or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll through town. Invest in these timeless classics, and you’ll never run out of stylish options to wear.

LAYER UP

“Whatever layered look you choose, try to select classic garments along with the trends. Good quality, wellmade natural fibre pieces in timeless designs are an investment worth making.” - Jo Beach

Stay warm and stylish at the same time

L

iving in Saskatchewan, we’ve become experts at layering because the climate swings from scorching heat to freezing cold in the blink of an eye. Whether you’re getting ready for a day at the office or a night at the rink, you can look good and stay cozy at the same time this winter. “We all want to feel good about how we look…while being comfortable at the same time. Layering can help you do just that,” says Jo Beach, owner and fashion designer at Cedar & Vine. “Natural fibres should be in the mix, too.”

Start from the inside When constructing your layered look, always begin with the garments closest to your skin. These base layers should be lightweight and fitted to your body to avoid unnecessary bulk. Additionally, consider whether these base pieces can stand alone as fashionable choices. Flexibility is key because you may need to remove a layer without compromising your look. T-shirts, tanks, and long sleeves are excellent choices to wear beneath dresses, jumpsuits, and various tops. Leggings, too, can serve as versatile companions to dresses, long tops, or even pants.

36 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

STYLE & WELLNESS

TRAVELLING THIS WINTER? Here are Jo’s

tips for packing your travel wardrobe: 1) Packing garments you can mix and match with ease for great combinations that also maximise luggage space. 2) Bring things that can be layered under or over your main items. This is especially important if you’re travelling where weather can change quickly or you have to go from one look to another fast. 3) Neutrals are the way to go for essential tops and bottoms. Add colour and flair with accessories and smaller items that are easy to pack.

In the middle Next in our layering journey are your wardrobe staples—those versatile pieces that shine both independently and as part of layered ensembles. These timeless choices transcend fashion trends or seasonal constraints. Investing in high-quality materials and construction ensures they last, making them dependable choices for countless fashion opportunities. One of the reasons we love natural fibres so much is because they breathe—allowing that ebb and flow with the way our bodies naturally regulate our temperature. What fibres we wear on our bodies is something that often gets overlooked, but it makes a huge impact on how we feel in our clothing!

Top it off Your outer layer adds the finishing touch to your ensemble, with a looser look. Sweaters, blazers, and jackets fall into this category, providing effortless style with the option to put on or take off as needed. Embrace the creative potential of these pieces—layer them over rompers, dresses, or top-and-bottom combinations. Accessories are your secret weapon for elevating your outfit. Shoes, scarves, jewelry, and bags can infuse your style with personality and flair. There are no right or wrong way to accessorise, so have fun with it! Allow your ensemble to reflect your unique spirit and style.

“Whatever layered look you choose, try to select classic garments along with the trends,” says Jo. “Good quality, wellmade natural fibre pieces in timeless designs are an investment worth making. Having a closet that consists primarily of garments that you reach for on a regular basis saves you time and energy when trying to decide on an ensemble. Keep your closet organised by outfit pairings that you already love and work together.” In the ever-changing Saskatchewan climate, mastering the art of layering is not just a necessity but a stylish statement. By starting with the basics, incorporating versatile wardrobe staples, and experimenting with outer layers and accessories, you can create beautiful and weather-appropriate looks that keep you comfortable and confident, no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Need help with your look this winter? Stop by Cedar & Vine in the former Signal Hill Arts Centre and check out their amazing collection. “We know how crucial it is to wear clothing that we feel good in—that’s why we pore over the details that take a garment from a oncein-a-while wear to one you’ll reach for 365 days a year,” says Jo. “Come by our showroom! We’d love to get to know you and help you build a wardrobe around your lifestyle that you love and wear with pride.”

Understanding Your Child's Love Language By Ardell Waldner

L

oving your children is a journey filled with twists and turns, laughter, and occasional challenges. These little beings come into your life, and all you want to do is love them. However, sometimes, it may seem like your efforts to love them aren’t quite hitting the mark. Children under five can’t tell you their love language clearly, so as parents, we embark on a journey of discovery, much like flying through clouds, feeling our way around. It’s vital to express love to our children in various ways, allowing them to experience the different forms of love: Quality Time, Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, and Gifts. In this discovery phase, it’s essential to incorporate these different love languages into your interactions with your child. Young children thrive on physical touch. Snuggle them in your lap while reading a story—that’s both physical touch and quality time. Play a game of touch football or tag, adding words of affirmation like, “You’re doing a great job! You’re so fast!” The modern world has led to concerns about inappropriate touching, causing parents to limit physical closeness. However, children need physical closeness more than ever. Even during adolescence, they secretly crave that hug at the right moment while avoiding embarrassment in front of friends. As your child grows, consider helping them identify their primary love language through quizzes or simple discussions. Once you know their love language, it’s

like finding a treasure. If it’s quality time, set aside special moments for activities they love. If it’s physical touch, ensure you shower them with hugs and affection. A child with a full “love tank” is easier to handle, and conflicts tend to diminish. When my youngest son and I were battling a lot, I would schedule some quality time with him. We’d play cards, watch his favorite movies, or engage in activities he enjoyed. His primary love language is quality time, and he is a whole new loving person once I fill him up. To integrate the love languages into your relationship with your child:

Acts of Service: Prepare their favourite meal, assist them in cleaning their room or doing their laundry, or simply help with chores they struggle with.

Gifts: It doesn’t have to be a grand gift. Small gestures like picking a flower from the garden or giving a gift certificate for an ice cream sundae can brighten their day.

Physical Touch: Cuddle up for movies or bedtime stories, give hugs and kisses

STYLE & WELLNESS

frequently, or even share a high-five.

Quality Time: Establish daily activities or movie nights tailored to your child’s interests, whether it’s swimming or fishing.

Words of Affirmation: Express your love and appreciation verbally. Praise them not only in front of them but also to other adults, such as teachers and grandparents. Children need love in abundance, but it’s essential to understand their primary love language while sprinkling in the others.

Start me up

A guide to entrepreneurship in the southeast By Brook Thalgott

So, are you thinking about owning your own business? There’s a lot to consider on the road to entrepreneurship. Are you going to start something from the ground up or buy an existing business? Whatever you’re considering, here’s a guide to what you need to know before taking the plunge.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND UNDERSTAND YOUR COMPETITION AND YOUR CUSTOMERS.

BUSINESS & TRADE

Planning matters A solid business plan is vital to any successful venture. You need to define your concept (or know the concept of an existing business), target market, and your unique selling proposition (USP). Make financial projections that show your costs and your revenues. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), Community Futures Sunrise (CF Sunrise), the SK Startup Institute and Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan (WESK) are all excellent resources for business planning.

The law Legal structures in business are important for regulatory and planning purposes. Are you going to be a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation? Each has their advantages and disadvantages, so ensure that you get professional advice on which one works best for you.

Becoming a business Once you have your idea and know the structure of your business, it’s time to register it. The Saskatchewan Corporate Registry through Information Services Corporation is the place you go to register your business name, register for a federal business number and more. You also need a location for your business. You need to check with the City of Weyburn or your municipality about licensing your business and what the regulations and zoning rules are for your planned location.

Money in the bank Once you’re registered, there’s still more financial “stuff” to do. You will need separate bank accounts for your enterprise. Talk to your financial institution to determine what your needs are. Do you need a basic bank account? Do you need a point-of-sale terminal and

cash register? Do you need to accept online payments? Will you need payroll help? You will also have to determine if you need to collect GST and PST. A professional accountant and a banker can help you determine what you need to do. Beyond payment management, you’ll also need to determine your funding needs. Will you need a loan to start your business or buy your business? There are many organizations that can help you when it comes to funding your business. Your bank or credit union, BDC, CF Sunrise, and WESK are great resources for information on loans, grants and investments.

All hands on deck If your business requires more than just you, you have to consider your staffing needs. Managing staff is more than hanging up a help wanted sign and hiring someone. You’ll need to know about the regulations about employing people, payroll, workplace safety and more. The Ministry of Labour and Workplace Safety and the Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board websites are a good place to start.

Get good help The most important piece of advice when it comes to your entrepreneurship journey is getting assistance when and where you need it. You don’t have to go it alone in business. There are many organizations that can help you make good decisions. CF Sunrise is a great local resource for entrepreneurs to access that understands the southeast and its business community. Your local law firm, accounting practice, and financial institution are also excellent resources for advice and information. There are many exciting business opportunities in the southeast. With the right planning, resources, and a commitment to hard work, you can establish a thriving enterprise right here.

wning your own business is something many of us aspire to do. Whether you’re starting your own enterprise or buying an existing business, there are many things to consider. Steve Schuck and the Schuck Law Firm team can assist you in making the right decisions about your business every step of the way. For those creating something based on an idea and your own determination, there are legal factors to consider. “Starting a business from the ground up can be incredibly rewarding and takes a lot of work,” says Steve. “Right from the start there are decisions to be made about whether you should operate as

a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation. We can help you determine the right structure and handle the paperwork for you. If there is going to be more than one owner involved, having appropriately drafted agreements are a must.” The other path to entrepreneurship comes from buying an existing business, which comes with more complex legal matters to consider. “If you’re interested in buying a business, there are many things you will need to review with a lawyer and an accountant before committing,” says Steve. “While buying a business is a faster way to get into entrepreneurship, you have to examine it from all sides first. That is due diligence.”

BUSINESS & TRADE

Due diligence “Due diligence is typically done when you have signed a letter of intent and a non-disclosure agreement,” says Steve. “This gives the seller confidence that you will only use the information provided to assess the deal. From there, you can look at the business’s operations, financial information and more.” Due diligence covers the business’s financial documents, legal issues, operations, employees, assets, products and customer information. It’s an intense process that can be done smoothly with appropriate legal, financial and accounting advice.

“Due diligence is an intense and vital part of the process. You want to ensure you have all the information you need before you offer to buy the business.” - Steve Schuck

Steve Schuck

You need to check whether the business has any outstanding legal liabilities, such as lawsuits or creditor issues. You’re also going to examine the company’s financial statements including income statements, cash flow statements, balance sheets, and the accounts payable and receivable. You’ll also want to see tax returns for the last three years, and the company’s minute books, articles of incorporation, company bylaws and any partnership agreements, if any. You may also need to examine contracts, mortgages, and other documents as they relate to the business. You will also want to review customer and employee information, any physical assets and real estate, and any intellectual property. There is a lot to go through.

you should consult a professional to help. When the agreement is drafted, you need to be clear about what you are buying and the terms of the agreement. This includes the business name, assets or shares, key employees, equipment, trademarks, and more. Even access to the social media handles for the company need to be addressed.

“Due diligence is an intense and vital part of the process. You want to ensure you have all the information you need before you offer to buy the business,” says Steve.

A done deal

The next step Once you have completed the due diligence process, it’s time to negotiate the sale. Just like with due diligence,

A legal professional can draft the agreement, and work with you and your accountant to negotiate the agreement, price paid, and how payments to the seller will work. “Are you paying cash for the business or are you financing the business with a financial institution? Do you want to work with the seller to pay over time?” asks Steve. “These are all factors a lawyer can help you with.”

If the process goes well and an agreement is made, congratulations! “Once the deal closes, you’re a business owner. Welcome to the world of entrepreneurship!” says Steve. If you incorporated, there will be ongoing annual upkeep to handle. That is just one of the services we provide at

One of the first crucial steps in establishing your business is to contemplate your potential revenue. Are you turning your passion or hobby into a profitable enterprise? If your revenue surpasses $30,000 in a rolling twelve-month period, you will need to collect GST (Goods and Services Tax). Additionally, depending on your business activities, you may also be required to collect PST (Provincial Sales Tax). However, navigating the rules and exceptions associated with PST

can be intricate. Nancy illustrates this complexity with an example: “If you use your truck for hauling gravel in the summer, you must charge PST. Yet, if you switch to hauling snow in the winter with the same truck, PST collection is not required. If you operate in the oilfield, you might need to collect PST on aboveground work, but not for work below ground. It’s vital to have this information at your fingertips, and professional help can be invaluable as you navigate bureaucracy.” The choice between a sole proprietorship and incorporation is another important decision that budding entrepreneurs must make. “For those starting small, a sole proprietorship can be a suitable choice,” says Nancy. “However, as your business expands, incorporation may become necessary. It’s essential to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of both options and make an informed decision that aligns with your long-term goals.” Insurance is yet another crucial aspect of launching and running a business.

Liability insurance is a non-negotiable necessity, although the specific coverage requirements can vary widely among different industries. “ Think about what could potentially go wrong in your business and be brutally honest about it,” she says. “The last thing any entrepreneur needs is to discover that they lack coverage in the event that their product or service fails and causes harm to others.” Also, entrepreneurs must consider insurance coverage for unforeseen personal events, such as illness or injury that prevents them from working. Nancy recommends talking to an insurance professional as part of your advisory team to ensure comprehensive protection for your business and personal well-being. “Owning a business offers a fulfilling and potentially lucrative path to making a living. However, to set yourself up for success, it’s essential to seek expert advice right from the start. The journey may be challenging, but with the right guidance, your entrepreneurial dreams can come true,” says Nancy.

What I learned over the last ten years By Ardell Waldner

A

s I enter my tenth year of business, I must start by thanking all of my clients today and over the years. Being a small business owner, the relationships you make are much more treasured and valuable. When I began this journey, everyone was busy, and the money flowed because we were still in the “boom.” Today, the business world looks a whole lot different. We’re dealing with everything from higher competition for customers to lack of employees, constant price changes on consumables like fuel, food and materials to supply chain breakdown and struggling to get what you need. COVID-19 changed the way we do business. As someone who works with many companies not to mention running my own, I felt that I could share a few tips of how I have weathered the new business landscape.

supplier have their app on your phone so you have it right at your fingertips. • Use the notes app in your phone to keep track of important ideas, things to remember and stuff you need to do. If I wake in the night with an idea or thought, I will put it in my notes. • If I have back-to-back client meetings and need to remember something, I pause for a moment let the next client know I just need to make a quick note before I forget and again, I utilize my notes app. • We have all had moments in the middle of the night or sitting at dinner with the family where you panic, remembering what you forgot to do. If you can’t fix it until tomorrow, email yourself. For example, I forgot the Thanksgiving turkey needs at least four days to defrost so I emailed myself to take it out when I get home. • Schedule your administration items like reading business emails or invoicing for first thing in the morning so you can take care of the forgotten items and get it out of the way quickly. Set a time limit and schedule it like an appointment. Another time saver— don’t sign up your email for everything just the important companies you need to know about.

TIPS TO HELP YOU GET AHEAD • Don’t let your phone run your day. Use a smartwatch so you can quickly screen calls and messages. You get to decide what is a priority and what isn’t. Use the phone as a tool not a distraction. • Use apps to help you get the job done. If you need to keep track of time, use a time app. If you need to look up prices frequently at your

job site or venue. Save fuel and time. If you can’t go without something, see if you can order for delivery. Often cab companies will pick up and deliver items. • If you’re struggling to hire employees, think about hiring other businesses into your daily life to save time. When I got to a point that I could not keep up I used services to clean my house and prepare my meals. There are several individuals and small companies putting together full meals for a family. All I had to do was pop them in the oven and I could get back to work or spend a bit of time with my children playing a game or talking about their day. • If you need a new skill, pay someone who has done it before to teach you. It will save you so much time and effort allowing you to get back to all the important things. • Use a to-do list but don’t overload it. Put only the most important things on it. Move what didn’t get done to the next day and schedule it if possible. These are just a few ways you can adapt to get the job done.

• We all have time wasters like personal emails to return, Netflix and phone games. Don’t let those things get away from you. Schedule your ‘down time.’ • If you’re struggling to find employees, hire the family. Maybe it’s time to pitch in by picking up a hammer, scheduling orders, and picking up parts. There are many small jobs that can be taken care of without the master skills. • Be organized. Pack your truck or prep the night before a big job. Use checklists to make sure that you have everything, so you are not leaving the

THE KEY TO GREAT OFFICE DESIGN By Eleesha Jensen

58 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

HOME

Companies are continually evolving, and the design of their workspaces should follow suit. Residential and commercial office design has become a top priority for employers and employees during recent years in order to maximize productivity and wellbeing of the user. There are many factors incorporated into an office design conducive to the work that needs to be done.

SPATIAL PLANNING Creating a good spatial plan for an office space often seems obvious (just include a desk, chair and maybe a window for a little peek outside). However, companies are no longer going for these cookie cutter spatial models! Identifying the company structure and way in which employees work individually and amongst others is a key factor in laying out a workspace. For example, in larger companies where employees collaborate often there are vastly different considerations than offices where primarily private individual workspaces are required. A company may opt for an open concept layout with a relaxed work culture, or they may require individual work areas with good sound proofing qualities. Doing your research and knowing your company structure is an important starting point to creating a functional layout. FURNISHINGS & CASEWORK It seems obvious that people are most productive when they are comfortable but applying this through appropriate furnishing selection can be a difficult

task. As layouts have evolved, so has the science regarding ergonomics and materiality. There are many companies in the market that specialize in creating furniture with optimal comfort, safety, and wellbeing of the user in mind. Factors that are often overlooked in casework design and construction are barrier free and accessible design. Creating an accessible workspace allows for the largest pool of employee candidates as well as widening the demographic range of potential clientele while also ensuring equal opportunity within an office space. LIGHTING & VIEWS Lighting has one of the largest impacts on individuals while completing workspace tasks and is often one of the most overlooked components to office design. The key to creating a successful lighting design is layering. Ensuring that each task has the appropriate lighting type, level and temperature will impact the long-term wellbeing of employees and clientele. Views are another important consideration when developing an

HOME

office layout. Daylight impacts a user’s happiness and connection with the outdoors. In a climate like Saskatchewan, this is a key consideration, especially in the colder months! SPATIAL + FURNISHINGS

Kiteen’s workspace considers all of her daily tasks and creates a functional spatial design to incorporate the specific needs of each task including office products and clothing storage, desk area for editing and a try on area for content creation.

The client had moveable furniture in the existing space and had issues with clients entering the office staff’s space which had little storage or organization. We were able to utilize a built-in desk to create flow and direction, separating the space into individual work zones.

FURNISHINGS

LIGHTING

the custom built ins are the key element to the space. they create a focal point while also meeting the task criteria list. custom built ins maxamize the use of a unique space.

We added additional task lighting above some of the work spaces and replaced the front window with a larger window to allow more light to enter and so staff could see customers arriving. We also added new window coverings for daylight control.

LIGHTING

OVERALL AESTHETIC

We updated the lighting in the space and added a desk lamp for task lighting. The ceiling light adds ambient lighting and an aesthetic appeal to the space.

We kept the space neutral with natural tones to make it an appealing space for their specific client demographic, which is a key consideration when deciding on overall aesthetic appeal. We also needed to pick durable and easily cleanable finishes since it is located in a rural Saskatchewan landscape.

OVERALL AESTHETIC We incorporated materials and products that reflect Kiteen’s style and her company branding. This is key as it is a backdrop for her social media content and must be on brand to ensure the greatest impact on followers.

Make it Merry & Save

How to Maximize Your Holiday Budget By Brook Thalgott

66 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

SHOP LOCAL

The holiday season should be a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, it can also be a time when spending rises and budgets get stressed. In these days of inflation, everyone could use a few tips to squeeze the most from every nickel and make your holiday budget stretch more.

H

ere are a few ideas on how you can have a great holiday and reduce your money stress at the same time.

First, plan ahead. The best thing you can do for your holiday spending is think about what you need and how much you have to spend. A simple pencil and paper are all you need to get started. It’s more than just a list of who to buy for. Think about all your Christmas expenses such as decorations, travel costs and food for celebrations. Write it all down and set a budget for each. Once you know what you need, you can pay attention to sales, coupons and discounts to help your budget go further. Sign up for newsletters or follow your favourite stores on social media to stay informed about sales and discounts. Remember to shop local, too. You’ll save time and money by shopping close to home. There’s no need to spend money on gas and meals for a trip to the city when you can find it all here. Next, examine the gift list. Sometimes a little creativity can lead to great memories. As my family ‘grew up’, we moved from buying gifts for all the aunts, uncles and cousins to drawing names from a hat. Each member of our extended family had one person to buy for with a set budget, and it’s great fun to find a gift for just one person instead of the pressure of shopping for everyone. As we got even older, we switched to a system where everyone brought a gift suitable for teens to seniors (yes, it is possible!) and we drew numbers to exchange the gifts. It is so much fun scrambling for gifts and the challenge of shopping. We still talk about the presents and the memories! Gifts should also come from more than the wallet—they should come from the heart. If you’re crafty (or even if you’re not) consider making homemade gifts where it works. Handmade

Christmas is also about more than just the presents. Think about ways you can provide experiences instead of tangible gifts. Passes to local events or amenities are a great way to make memories and they don’t clog closets. Also, during the holidays, explore low-cost or free entertainment options. Go ice skating, have a movie marathon at home, or organize a game night with friends and family. Your kids will talk about game night with the cousins for years to come.

gifts and homemade goodies show thoughtfulness and care—and even more so when they’re made by little hands. Whether it’s a batch of cookies, a knitted scarf, or personalized ornaments, these gifts are often more cherished than anything from the store. You can also save money with DIY décor. A walk through your yard or the local park can provide enough pinecones, branches and leaves to create a wreath, centrepiece or garland to make your home have some holiday flair. A little paint, a glue gun, ribbon and some ideas from Pinterest can go a long way on a Saturday afternoon. Hosting the gang for a meal can also add up quickly with the cost of groceries today. However, there are ways to make your money go further. Always shop the holiday season flyers for deals you can stock up on. A good deal in November on turkey or ham can wait for Christmas in the freezer—the same with butter and frozen vegetables. Pantry staples like cranberry sauce, flour, sugar and boxed stuffing can also be saved in the cupboard for Christmas. Cookie exchanges are also a great way to save time and money and share the love at the same time. Get a group together and each make a batch of holiday cookies and treats. You provide one

SHOP LOCAL

dozen treats to every participant, and they do the same. Everyone gets a mix of homemade treats, and you only had to bake once. Check that off your to-do list! Potlucks are also a wonderful way to share food and love this holiday season. The host provides the protein like a ham or turkey, and everyone else brings a side dish or dessert. This not only saves you money but also allows everyone to contribute and share their favourite recipes. It also ensures the host doesn’t spend the entire time in the kitchen, missing the fun!

Remember the true spirit of the holidays by giving back to the community. Volunteering your time or donating to a local charity instead of spending money on gifts feels good and helps those who need it. The holiday season doesn’t have to break the bank. By planning, getting creative, and remembering what the seasons means, you can create wonderful experiences while staying within your budget. The joy of the holidays comes from spending time with loved ones, creating cherished memories, and spreading happiness—not from the size of your wallet. So, make it merry and save smartly!

Before diving into crystal work, it’s essential to cleanse and activate your crystals to connect with their energy fully. Here’s how: 1. Hold your crystal in your hands, feeling its energy. 2. Envision white light surrounding the crystal. 3. Ask for blessings from the highest vibrations of love and light from the universe. 4. Set your intention for the crystal, always adding “for my highest good.”

• Carry in Your Pocket: Keep a crystal in your pocket for its positive vibes wherever you go. • Place in Your Wallet: for abundance place a Citrine or Jade into your wallet or if you run a business place them in your cash register. • Chakra and Pain Healing: Place crystals on or around your body to target specific chakras or areas of pain (leave for 5-15 minutes). By embracing these crystals and incorporating them into your daily life, you’ll begin to experience their powerful healing and transformative energies. here might be no better dessert than cheesecake. Pies, cakes, cookies, tarts are all delicious, but cheesecake is next-level divine. Just ask Nikita Meyer. Permanent makeup Permanent makeup is a tattoo. We use a tattoo machine with a needle cartridge to deposit pigment into the skin. Different from a traditional tattoo, permanent makeup uses pigments that are meant to gradually fade, not tattoo ink, and we deposit the pigment about 1/3 as deep as a traditional tattoo. Permanent makeup is meant to fade over time, requiring touch-ups every 1-2 years to maintain results. As styles, trends, and your face change with aging, having your permanent makeup fade out is a good thing.

Intense Pulsed Light

Permanent Jewelry

IPL is commonly referred to as LASER because the results are similar. LASER has been around longer so it’s a more familiar term. LASER is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation and IPL is Intense Pulsed Light. IPL is typically a more comfortable appointment with less pain involved than laser.

Harmony Blunt, owner

IPL’s main function is targeting and destroying Melanocytes (dark pigment) without damaging surrounding tissues and skin. This treatment is incredibly effective in removing dark hair and skin pigmentation such as freckles, age spots, and sun spots.

Not a tattoo. Not a piercing.

Permanent Jewelry is a HUGE trend on TikTok and instagram recently but what is it? Permanent Jewelry is a custom fitted piece of jewelry that is welded together and has no clasp. It’s not meant to be removed but can be cut off with scissors or nail clippers if you like. At ICE & INK we have a large variety of chains and charms to choose from that make the perfect bracelet, anklet, necklace, belly chain, and more! Looking for an alternative to matching tattoos?
