Publisher’s Message

After a long Saskatchewan winter, there’s nothing better than stepping into the sunshine and reconnecting with the heart of our community. Warmer days mean more time outside and more opportunities to explore everything Weyburn has to offer. From grabbing your favourite coffee or milk tea to strolling through the streets and discovering local gems, spring invites us to shop local and support the businesses that make our town truly shine.

Local businesses aren’t just places to shop—they’re run by our neighbours, our friends and the people who make Weyburn feel like home. They create jobs, sponsor events, sports teams and organizations plus they bring so much character to our community. So, the next time you think, “I’ll just buy that online,” take a moment to ask yourself—can I support a local business instead? Every choice we make helps shape the future of our town. Let’s make this season one of connection, community and celebration of all things local.

This issue's cover features a new business in town called The Athletic Club. Owner Tricia Boren has created a unique fitness space designed to meet the needs of the Weyburn community. She focuses on functional fitness and athletic development. The Club provides a specialized environment for those looking to train in a group setting. Their goal is to provide inclusive and flexible training options by making it easy for members to switch class times when needed.

One thing that always inspires me is the incredible creativity and drive of the entrepreneurs in our community. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to meet them and learn about their businesses and feature them in my magazine. In this issue, we’re proud to highlight an empowering Women’s Feature—Weyburn is filled with amazing women-owned businesses, each adding something special to our town.

A heartfelt thank you to our clients and readers. I hope you enjoy this issue and take some time to soak up the sunshine, explore the fantastic local spots around town and make the most of this beautiful season. We’ll be back in October with more stories to share—until then, have a wonderful summer!

The Slice Weyburn brings high-energy fun to downtown Axe-citing entertainment for all ages

New to Weyburn’s downtown, The Slice is not your average hangout spot. Locally owned and operated, this family-run venue is changing the game—literally— when it comes to entertainment in southeast Saskatchewan. With axe throwing, vibrant arcade-style games

and a welcoming atmosphere, The Slice Weyburn is quickly becoming a favourite destination for locals and travellers alike.

Created by Deron Fahlman and his spouse, Kyla Carrier, The Slice is a true passion project turned community hub. “We’re incredibly proud to be a locally

owned and operated family business,” says Deron. “You’d be surprised how many people walk in thinking we’re a franchise!”

With Kyla’s expertise as a journeyman carpenter and Deron’s fascination with axe throwing, the pair brought

L-R Deron, Kyla, Aria and Amora PHOTOS ABOVE BY Caylea Rose Photography

their vision to life—alongside their daughter Amora, who acts as both assistant manager and axe coach. Even six-year-old Aria is known to make an appearance, adding to the family-friendly vibe.

Unique fun you won’t find anywhere else

As the only axe-throwing venue in southeast Saskatchewan, The Slice offers a one-of-a-kind “axe-cade” experience. Instead of the usual painted targets, players take aim at a projected screen with interactive games like Battleship, Blackjack and even pin the tail on the donkey—using axes or knives. “Ever tried to take down an alien UFO with a knife?” says Deron. “You can at The Slice!”

Glow N Throw nights every Friday light up the space with glow-in-thedark fun, while a growing games floor includes dart boards, pool tables and shuffleboard. A private karaoke room is also in the works and promises another fun way to gather and let loose.

Perfect for parties and

team-building

Whether it’s a birthday bash, corporate team-builder or anniversary celebration, The Slice offers private bookings in a clean, inclusive environment with a more upscale feel. “We want it to be a place people love to hang out,” says Deron. Guests are encouraged to bring in local food or have it delivered, and a concession on site offers a curated mix of snacks and unique drinks.

Axe throwing made easy

New to axe throwing? No problem. A quick waiver and safety demo gets everyone started on the right foot. “We won’t hover, but we’re always close by to make sure everyone stays safe and has fun,” says Deron.

The concession stand is a hit, with hardto-find drinks like Jones Sodas, Arizona Iced Teas and Calypso flavours. The decision to keep the space alcohol-free has made it a go-to spot for families with teens and anyone looking for a fun, inclusive environment without the bar scene.

The Slice Weyburn is more than just a venue—it’s a place where the community comes together, has fun and supports local at the same time. Whether you’re tossing an axe or belting out karaoke, The Slice delivers an experience you won’t forget!

Thank you for helping us make a difference.

Your Community Owned Movie Theatre

Weyburn Theatre Community Service Cooperative is still working hard to bring the movies to Weyburn.

It’s a beautiful summer evening and the kids have been begging you to take them to the new Smurfs movie. After a long week, an evening at the movies is just what the doctor ordered but you don’t really want to watch another animated movie. You’d rather unwind by watching the newest Jurassic World – Rebirth movie. You take a look at the movie listings and find out BOTH movies are playing at the Credit Union Spark Cinema – at the same time!

This is just one of the scenarios the board of directors of Weyburn Theatre Community Service Cooperative have been dreaming of since beginning the journey to bring the movies back to Weyburn.

After nearly four years of planning and fundraising, phase one of construction has begun on the site of the former Soo Theatre. This is an exciting time but

the realities of current construction costs mean there is still plenty of work to be done. Current estimates put the Cooperative $1.5 million away from their new fundraising goal and that number will only get bigger as the months go by.

This may seem like a lofty goal but if everyone gives a little, a lot of money can be raised. Consider this: if every person in Weyburn donated $50, more than $500,000 would be raised.

As an extra incentive, the cooperative is launching a contest where every donor gets their name entered into a draw for a private screening!

THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE

The rise of the next-gen farmers

Across Weyburn and southeast Saskatchewan, the next generation of farmers is reshaping what it means to work the land. With one foot in tradition and the other in innovation, these young producers are balancing legacy with forward-thinking approaches to keep local agriculture strong.

Sarah Leguee, who farms with her family at Leguee Farms near Fillmore, says the next-gen approach is all about building on what’s already been done.

“Being a next generation farmer, first and foremost is not only growing and innovating, but building on the legacy that my parents and grandparents established here in the last several decades,” says Sarah. “We get the privilege of working alongside our parents, adding different perspectives and new ideas to the way they have been farming for years.”

That collaboration brings benefits, especially when it comes to adopting new technology—without rushing into trends.

“We have a set of operating principles on our farm. One is ‘be on the leading edge of innovation, not the bleeding edge,’” says Sarah. “There’s plenty of room for new tech like spot spraying or weed seed terminators, but we make sure it’s a good fit before diving in.”

She also sees a shift in the way young people view agriculture as a career.

“It’s been amazing to see so much interest in agriculture from young people lately,” says Sarah. “The industry is vibrant and provides one in eight jobs in Canada. It’s refreshing to see more youth wanting to be involved.”

While external challenges—from market volatility to public perceptions—still loom, Sarah sees a bright path ahead.

“Farming has always been a gamble and will continue to be,” she says. “But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Seeing young people step into leadership roles makes the future seem brighter—even in tough times.”

FUEL YOUR FARM FOR THE FUTURE

Ag-Activ’s

carbon-based solutions build healthier soil and stronger yields

In today’s unpredictable climate and economy, farming success hinges on more than just weather and seed—it’s about strategy, science and sustainability. That’s where Weyburn-based Ag-Activ comes in. With a range of carbon-based liquid fertilizers and personalized agronomy services, Ag-Activ helps farmers grow healthier crops, improve soil performance and build more resilient farms for the future.

“At Ag-Activ, we work with nature, not against it,” says Andries Van der Meulen, owner of Ag-Activ. “Our approach supports long-term soil health, which is the foundation of any good crop.”

Why carbon matters

Ag-Activ’s products are rooted in a philosophy that healthy soil leads to healthy crops, livestock and people. That’s why their fertilizers use carbon

as a base—boosting not only nutrient efficiency but overall soil vitality. Whether you’re managing a grain farm, a pasture, a garden or a lawn, carbonbased nutrition can make a meaningful difference.

“Carbon feeds the biology in the soil,” says Andries. “It improves structure, moisture retention, and nutrient availability—especially in stressed or depleted soils.”

Andries explains that many conventional fertilizers can cause leaching or runoff, particularly in sandy or saline soils. “Our carbon-based products release nutrients slowly and efficiently, reducing waste and minimizing the environmental impact,” he says. “We’re not just growing crops—we’re growing sustainability.”

Get to the root of the issue

Understanding the soil beneath your boots is key to crop success. That’s

why Ag-Activ offers comprehensive soil sampling, tissue testing, and personalized consulting. These services help farmers diagnose nutrient deficiencies, assess pH levels and build tailored fertility plans.

“Treat the soil so the soil can treat us,” says Andries. “That’s the heart of everything we do.”

Ag-Activ’s team works closely with growers to identify problem areas—from acidic patches to high sodium zones— and prescribe the right blend of nutrients. Their recommendations aren’t one-sizefits-all. Each prescription is based on crop type, stage of growth, field history and real-time testing data.

Soil pH, in particular, plays a crucial role. “Ideal soil pH is between 6.3 and 7.3,” says Andries. “If you’re outside that range, you risk nutrient lock-out. Even if you’re applying the right products, the plants may not be able to use them.”

Products that perform

Ag-Activ’s product line-up includes a full suite of liquid fertilizers, bio-stimulants and micronutrient blends, all designed to enhance plant uptake, support microbial life, and improve stress resistance.

Here’s a closer look at a few standouts:

• Humic acid and fulvic acid: These natural soil conditioners improve soil structure, enhance nutrient retention and promote beneficial microbes. Fulvic acid improves nutrient absorption and helps buffer soil pH.

• HumiCal: A blend of humic acid and calcium, this product helps strengthen plant cell walls, boost root development and support healthier seedling establishment.

• Partner and Signature: These carbon-rich blends of humic and fulvic acids act as natural chelators, improving nutrient

availability and promoting stronger root systems. They also support long-term soil fertility.

• Pop-Up NPK and Take-Off NPK: Starter fertilizers that help young plants establish quickly in cool, wet spring conditions. With a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus bio-stimulants, these blends give crops a strong early boost.

• Kelp seaweed extract and Humikelp: Seaweed-based biostimulants that are rich in plant hormones, amino acids and trace minerals. These help plants recover from stress and improve flowering and fruiting.

• MicroCharger™: A blend of essential micronutrients like zinc, copper and manganese, designed to correct deficiencies and promote steady development throughout the growing season.

“There’s no silver bullet in farming,” says Andries. “But with the right combination of products and information, we can set crops up for success and improve the soil for years to come.”

“Every season brings something new. But one thing stays the same—healthy soil grows better

Solutions for every season

Ag-Activ’s products are designed for versatility—use them in furrow, as foliar sprays, or integrated into a full fertility program. Many are compatible with other nutrition blends and can be applied alongside herbicides or pesticides.

From early-season plantings to midseason stress management, there’s a product to match every growth stage. For example, Nitro Boost 27-0-1 delivers a punch of nitrogen and calcium to support early leafy growth, while K-9 Potassium supports flowering, fruiting and stress resistance later in the season.

For long-term nutrition, Ag-Activ also offers slow-release nitrogen options. These ensure consistent feeding while reducing the need for multiple

crops.”

Ag-Activ also supports home gardeners and lawn enthusiasts with products that work just as well in backyards as they do in broad-acre fields. Andries recommends using humic and fulvic acids in gardens to build organic matter and improve plant resilience. For lawns, a fall application of fertilizer promotes strong root growth and a greener spring.

“We’re here to support growers of all kinds,” he says. “From farmers to gardeners, everyone benefits from healthier soil.”

Grow with Ag-Activ

Farming is a long game. Building stronger soil, improving crop performance and preparing for future challenges takes patience, planning and partnership. That’s exactly what Ag-Activ offers.

applications. “It’s about working smarter, not harder,” says Andries.

Support that goes beyond the bottle

What sets Ag-Activ apart isn’t just what’s in the tank—it’s the hands-on support they offer. Their Boots on Ground agronomy service provides everything from soil testing and crop scouting to field mapping and fertility planning. Farmers also receive seasonal field tours, drainage assessments and personalized recommendations based on yield data.

“Farmers are constantly making decisions,” says Andries. “We help provide the information that leads to better ones.”

Whether you’re battling poor soil, facing extreme weather or just looking to get more from your inputs, Ag-Activ is ready to help. Their carbon-based approach combines sustainability, science and service—helping you grow not just this season, but for many to come.

“Every season brings something new,” says Andries. “But one thing stays the same—healthy soil grows better crops.”

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE OF VETERINARY CARE

Prairie Animal Health Centre is expanding to serve Weyburn’s animals—and their people—even better

Big things are happening at Prairie Animal Health Centre in Weyburn. Construction is well underway on a brandnew, 9,500-square-foot facility that’s designed with one goal in mind—serving the community’s pets and livestock with even greater care and capacity.

“We believe in Weyburn,” says Dr. Greg Douglas, owner partner and veterinarian, at Prairie Animal Health Centre. “The people here love their animals and work hard to give them the best. We want to match that dedication with a facility that supports both pet owners and producers, now and in the future.”

Their new location is right around the corner from their current location, ideal for

both pet owners and livestock owners. It’s accessible right off the highway for trailers, and still accessible by pet owners walking over from their residence or stopping by on their way to the dog park.

MORE ROOM TO HELP MORE ANIMALS

The new space will more than double the centre’s current exam rooms, jumping from three to eight. This means less waiting and more time spent providing quality care. For Weyburn families and farmers alike, it’s a meaningful upgrade.

The team is also focused on making visits less stressful for both pets and their owners. A new feline-only area will give cats a quiet, comfortable space all

to themselves. Heated kennels, more wet tables and a walk-on scale will make appointments smoother and more efficient, especially for larger dogs and nervous pets.

“We’ve really looked at what will make things better for the animals,” says Dr. Carol Ross, owner partner and veterinarian. “From comfort to convenience, this building is built with them in mind.”

A BOOST FOR THE COMMUNITY

The expanded facility will do more than help animals—it will help Weyburn too. By building a top-tier veterinary practice right in town, PAHC hopes to attract even more veterinary talent to the area.

“We want to invest in Weyburn because we know it’s worth it,” says Dr. Jeremy Ross, owner partner and veterinarian. “A great community deserves great veterinary care. This new building is part of our long-term commitment to being here and growing with you.”

Farmers and ranchers will also benefit from a new drive-thru space for large animal exams. Whether it’s calving season or cattle checks, the updated facility will make those visits faster and easier.

“We’re excited for everyone to see it. This building is a reflection of how much we value the trust you place in us to care for your animals. We’re building something special together.”
- Kristin Caldwell

COMING THIS FALL

Set to open its doors this fall, the new Prairie Animal Health Centre in Weyburn is more than just a bigger space—it’s a promise to continue putting care, compassion and community first.

“We’re excited for everyone to see it,” says Kristin Caldwell, operating officer and RVT. “This building is a reflection of how much we value the trust you place in us to care for your animals. We’re building something special together.”

ROOTED IN WEYBURN

Prairie Sky Co-op’s Sean Stewart brings local insight to ag solutions

Born and raised on a farm just outside Weyburn, Sean Stewart knows firsthand the values that define rural Saskatchewan—hard work, community and a strong connection to the land.

“I learned many life lessons growing up on the farm,” says Sean. “It’s where I discovered the importance of family and built the foundation for my career.”

Coming home to serve the community

After years working in the ag industry away from home, Sean returned to Weyburn nearly a decade ago, driven

by a desire to reconnect with his roots.

Now, as Prairie Sky Co-op’s new farm and commercial sales manager, he’s combining his experience and local knowledge to support producers and businesses across the region.

A new role with familiar goals

“The position is new to Prairie Sky Co-op,” says Sean. “I’m here to help our customers with anything fuel or agrelated—from tanks and accessories to grain bins and augers.”

Prairie Sky Co-op offers premium diesel fuels, a full line of lubricants for nearly every application, and equipment

solutions tailored to the needs of local farmers. Whether you’re outfitting your operation with new grain handling tools or fuelling up for the season, Sean and the team are ready to help.

“I’ve always valued strong customer relationships,” says Sean. “It’s great to be back in Weyburn doing what I love— helping people in the community I grew up in.”

Grow your farm, protect your future

Making sense of AgriStability, AgriInvest and Farm Incorporation

When it comes to farm finances, two of the most common questions

Nancy McMahon hears are about AgriStability and AgriInvest. As a long-standing accounting firm in Weyburn, Nancy and her team specialize in taking the stress out of these programs—by handling all the paperwork and ensuring producers get the benefits they’re entitled to.

“We make sure Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) get what they need,” Nancy says. “Whether you’re enrolled in AgriStability, AgriInvest or both, we can

provide the accurate data that supports your payments.”

Understanding AgriStability

AgriStability is a risk management program delivered by SCIC. It helps offset large margin declines due to weather, rising input costs or market fluctuations. To participate, producers must enrol and pay an annual fee.

Each year, producers submit their financial statements and tax return, along with information like crop yields, livestock inventory, unpaid bills and deferred sales. “This is used to calculate your reference and program margins,”

Nancy says. “If your program margin drops below 70 percent of your reference margin, you could qualify for a payment.”

How AgriInvest supports your bottom line

AgriInvest works differently—it’s a savings account designed to help producers manage income variability. Producers make annual contributions based on their Allowable Net Sales, and AAFC matches it up to $10,000.

“SCIC forwards your financials to AAFC, and then AAFC lets you know the amount you’re eligible to contribute,” Nancy says. “Once you deposit your

share, they match it. But you need at least $25,000 in agricultural sales to qualify.”

Incorporating your farm can help—if done right

Today’s farms are modern businesses, and many operate under corporate structures. Incorporation can allow farmers to defer taxes and improve cash flow, often using preferred shares to transfer assets from a personal to a corporate farm.

“Preferred shares are a great tool, but only if you plan ahead,” Nancy says. “They let you defer taxes now, but if you don’t redeem those shares gradually, you could be hit with a huge tax bill later— especially when it’s time to sell or pass on the farm.”

She adds that younger farmers are in the best position to take advantage of this strategy. “Redeeming shares over time, while you still have decades in the business, can save you thousands. But too often, we see operations leave this too late and face financial surprises.”

Nancy encourages producers to think of their farms not just as family traditions,

but as businesses that deserve expert guidance. “Farming is complex, and your finances should reflect that,” she says. “We’re here to help you plan smart— today and for the future.”

Need help with AgriStability, AgriInvest or long-term farm planning? Nancy McMahon’s team is ready to guide you every step of the way.

One of the things veterinary technologists love most is sharing our knowledge, so don’t be shy with your questions when you come in for your puppy visits.

Protection is important

Vaccinations are critical, especially with dogs being more social than ever. Dogs require what we call core vaccines—a vaccine that is necessary regardless of lifestyle or risk. These vaccines protect against diseases we have here in southeast Saskatchewan like Distemper, Parvo Virus, Rabies and more. There are additional vaccines that some dogs need because of lifestyle and risk such as Bordetella (often referred to as Kennel Cough) for those that attend doggie daycare, grooming or the dog park. Dogs that travel south should be protected against Canine Influenza. These vaccines require boosters with the average puppy receiving their vaccinations at 8, 12, 16 weeks, one year of age and ranges from annual to every three years depending on the vaccine. Your puppy should avoid dog parks and playing with unvaccinated dogs until they are fully vaccinated. EXPERT ADVICE

The right food

Growing up healthy starts with what they eat. Premium diets and proven diets are a great place to start. Feeding your puppy for who they are is very important. A large breed puppy has a different growth curve than a small breed puppy and therefore different nutritional needs. Look for large breed and small breed formulas when selecting a diet whenever possible. Avoid diets that advertise grain free. These diets use human diet trends as marketing techniques and less than one per cent of dogs are truly allergic to grains. In 2019 the FDA released a statement to avoid grain free diets as they have been linked to heart problems in dogs. We have seen dogs in our clinics develop these issues as a result of eating grain free diets. Veterinary technologists and veterinarians are very knowledgeable about nutrition and are happy to assist you in learning more about this important topic.

Mind your manners

Sit! Good dog! Socialization and manners make good dogs into great dogs. This can be done in formalized classes or at home. The most important thing is to get started by making it a part of daily life and get the whole family involved. Dogs learn best through positivity and repetition. Start with a plan and ask yourself questions like do I want my puppy to sit before I feed him? Should he sit when company comes in? What door do we want him to ask to go outside at? These questions can help you build your daily routine around the things that matter most to you. Then everyone in the house can contribute to ensuring that

behavior is encouraged. If one family member is the only one making the effort than the puppy is less likely to succeed. If going to classes, have different handlers attend. That way you know if the dog knows the command. Exposure to new environments and meeting new people and pets make for the most social pets.

Once your puppy is on its way with vaccination protection, I like the 30-day rule. Have your puppy meet thirty new people in thirty days and receive a treat from each person. You will never have a hard time finding someone willing to stop and interact with your puppy while you go for a walk or visit a pet friendly retailer or even take a ride through the drive-thru. Remember the time you invest now is well worth it, as they are most impressionable as puppies.

Weyburn, SK

FUELLED BY SERVICE, GROUNDED IN COMMUNITY

Weyburn Dodge’s proud legacy of service and support in southeast Saskatchewan

When you visit Weyburn Dodge, you’re not just stepping onto a dealership lot—you’re stepping into decades of dedication to the local community. Under the leadership of Jeff Tosczak and James Bell, this locally owned dealership has become a go-to destination for automotive sales and service in southeast Saskatchewan. And while the vehicles may be shiny and new, the

values behind the business are rooted in generations of local connection.

“Being locally owned and operated means everything to us,” says Jeff. “This is where we live, where we raise our families, and where we give back—just like my dad did when he ran his business in Weyburn.” Giving back is more than a motto for Jeff and James—it’s a legacy. Jeff’s father began supporting community initiatives in the 1970s, and

that spirit of generosity continues today through Weyburn Dodge’s sponsorship of local sports teams, events and causes.

Top-tier service built for hardworking industries

The dealership has grown significantly in recent years, especially when it comes to service capacity. With two buildings, heavy-duty hoists and an expanded team of diesel mechanics, Weyburn

Dodge is equipped to handle the needs of southeast Saskatchewan’s vital oil, gas and agricultural sectors.

“Often, commercial customers are tired of being at the back of the line,” says James. “We’ve invested in our facilities so we can offer priority, personalized fleet service. Whether you’re running a single unit or a full fleet, we’ve got your back.”

Their expanded service menu includes everything from spray-in box liners and protective film installation to full detailing services. Every make and model are welcome in the shop, and regular maintenance or complex repairs are handled with the same level of care.

More vehicles, more choice, same friendly feel

Weyburn Dodge proudly offers the full lineup of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles. Spread over two lots, the dealership gives customers the inventory selection of a larger centre while maintaining that personal, small-town experience. “Our team is always ready to help you find the perfect vehicle,” says Jeff. “And if it’s not on the lot, we’ll bring it in for you. That’s the advantage of a dealership that truly cares.”

The dealership’s commitment doesn’t end with the sale. Customers return again and again for maintenance, service, accessories and advice—because they know the team will treat them like neighbours, not numbers.

Growing the family

In September 2023, Jeff and James added Southwest Chevrolet GMC Buick in Melita, Manitoba to their family of dealerships. With roots dating back to 1906, the Melita location shares the same customer-first approach. “It’s an honour to continue the legacy of another prairie dealership that puts people first,” says Jeff.

Your local dealership for the long haul

Located at 1627 First Avenue NE, Weyburn Dodge is more than just a

place to buy or service a vehicle—it’s a business built on community values, local pride and a drive to serve. “We’re not going anywhere,” says Jeff. “Weyburn is our home, and we’re proud to be part of what makes this region strong.”

Thriving together

How to cultivate healthy habits in your family

Building a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about individual choices—it’s about creating an environment where the whole family thrives together. When healthy habits become part of your everyday life, they feel less like chores and more like natural, enjoyable routines. Whether it’s eating better, moving more or finding time to unwind, small changes can lead to lifelong benefits for your family.

family affair

Good nutrition starts at home, and involving the whole family in meal planning and preparation makes it easier to develop healthy eating habits. Try meal prepping together on weekends or assigning simple cooking tasks to the kids. Making meals fun—like creating colourful salads or build-your-own taco nights—encourages kids to explore new foods. Stock the kitchen with wholesome snacks like cut-up fruits, nuts and wholegrain crackers so healthy options are always within reach for everyone.

Move more, together

Physical activity is more enjoyable when it’s a shared experience. Instead of thinking of exercise as a solo task, look for ways to incorporate movement into family life. Go for evening walks, play active games or try a new sport together. Even small changes, like biking or walking instead of driving for short trips, can make a big difference. Finding activities that you all enjoy will make movement a natural part of daily life.

Prioritize sleep and relaxation

Rest is just as important as activity when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. Establishing consistent bedtime

for the whole family. Limiting screen time before bed, creating a calming nighttime routine and ensuring bedrooms are comfortable and clutter-free can all promote better rest. Beyond sleep, encouraging moments of relaxation—whether it’s quiet reading time, stretching or mindfulness exercises—can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

Lead by example

Children often mimic what they see, so setting a positive example is one of the best ways to encourage healthy habits. If you prioritize self-care, nutritious eating and regular exercise, your kids are more likely to adopt similar behaviours. It’s also important to have open conversations about health in a way that focuses on feeling good rather than just appearance or weight.

Make it fun and flexible

Healthy habits shouldn’t feel like rules—they should be enjoyable and adaptable. Creating family challenges, such as a stepcount competition or a new recipe night, can make healthy choices feel exciting. Being flexible is key, too. It’s okay to have treats or lazy days. The goal is balance, not perfection.

Instead of focusing on strict goals, celebrate small wins along the way. Acknowledge when your family makes a healthier choice or tries something new. Positive reinforcement helps build motivation and keeps everyone engaged in the journey toward better health.

By making small, sustainable changes together, you can build a foundation for lifelong wellness. The key is to focus on progress, enjoy the journey and support each other along the way. Thriving together means embracing health as a shared adventure—one that strengthens your bodies and your relationships.

The Athletic Club is a fresh take on fitness with a community focus

When Tricia Boren started JOLT Fitness in 2018 alongside her daughter Jayda and friend Lydia Sanders, she had no idea it would eventually lead to opening The Athletic Club. But with years of experience, evolving goals, and a passion for functional strength training, Tricia has now created a unique fitness space designed to meet the needs of the Weyburn community.

A JOURNEY FROM JOLT TO THE ATHLETIC CLUB

Tricia’s fitness journey started with kettlebells, but over the years, she expanded her expertise through various certifications in functional strength and athlete training. As life took Jayda and Lydia in different directions, Tricia found herself wanting more flexibility and control over class schedules, leading her to find a space of her own.

L-R Tricia Boren and Jayda Boren

“The idea of having our own facility really started to take shape when Jayda decided to move back to Weyburn in October 2024,” says Tricia. “It gave me the push to create something new—something that would allow us to expand our offerings and provide a better experience for our members.”

With the help of local businesses, Tricia renovated and opened The Athletic Club in January 2025, bringing her vision to life. The process involved careful planning, from selecting the right equipment to designing a layout that could accommodate small group training sessions and large team workouts.

WHAT MAKES THE ATHLETIC CLUB UNIQUE

Weyburn is fortunate to have a variety of fitness classes and training options, and The Athletic Club is proud to add another alternative to the mix. Rather than seeing other gyms or programs as competition, the Club recognizes that each class and

“OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE INCLUSIVE AND FLEXIBLE TRAINING OPTIONS. LIFE IS BUSY, SO WE MAKE IT EASY FOR MEMBERS TO SWITCH CLASS TIMES WHEN NEEDED.” - Tricia Boren

Diverse class offerings for all fitness levels

The Athletic Club provides a variety of classes tailored to different groups within the community:

• Full Throttle: The signature functional fitness class, designed to train movements rather than specific muscles, improving overall strength, mobility and endurance.

• Men’s Night: A dedicated time for men to explore functional fitness in a comfortable, supportive setting.

• Seniors Strength and Stretch: A program designed to help seniors build strength, improve mobility, and stay active in a fun, social environment.

• Team Training: Specialized programs for U16 AA and SJHL Red Wings, along with other teams.

• Female Athlete Training (15+): A space for young women to build strength, confidence and endurance, whether for sport or daily life.

• Lunch Hour Lift: This 40 min class is a condensed version of Full Throttle

instructor brings something unique to the community.

The Athletic Club stands out for its spacious facility, thoughtfully designed layout for athlete training, and extensive range of equipment. “Our space is built to accommodate teams and small group training,” says Tricia. “With a focus on functional fitness and athletic development, we provide a specialized environment for those looking to train in a group setting.”

The club offers a dynamic, teamoriented approach to fitness—one that complements the many great options available in Weyburn.

EXPERT COACHING AND A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT

Tricia’s extensive certifications in kettlebell training and functional strength allow her to provide expert coaching, ensuring members get the most out of every session.

The club is designed for people of all ages and fitness levels, with members ranging from 15 to 90 years old. The atmosphere is welcoming and empowering, ensuring that everyone feels like they belong. “We believe that everyone is an athlete,” says Tricia. “Some are training for a sport, and others are training for life.”

“Over the years, I’ve gained the skills to teach movement effectively, giving members the small cues that make a big difference in their form and results,” she says.

The Athletic Club’s coaching philosophy revolves around meeting members where they are in their fitness journey. Whether a beginner or a seasoned athlete, the focus is on progression, proper technique and building confidence in movement.

“Each class is structured to allow modifications, whether someone needs to scale back or push themselves further,” says Tricia. “We want to create a space where everyone feels challenged in a way that suits their abilities.”

A WARM WELCOME FROM THE WEYBURN COMMUNITY

Since opening in January, The Athletic Club has received an overwhelmingly positive response.

“FITNESS IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST WORKING OUT. IT’S ABOUT BUILDING A LIFESTYLE THAT SUPPORTS OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. AND WE’RE HERE TO HELP MAKE THAT HAPPEN.” - Tricia Boren

“Memberships are better than expected, and we love the variety of ages and fitness levels at The Club,” says Tricia. “It’s exciting to see our vision come to life.”

With strong community engagement, Tricia hopes to continue growing The Athletic Club, expanding its offerings, and providing additional workshops or specialized training sessions in the future. “We want to keep evolving based on what our members need,” she says. “This is just the beginning.”

TAKING THE FIRST STEP TOWARD A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

For those considering joining, Tricia has one piece of advice: don’t be intimidated.

“Every single person in our classes started as a beginner,” she says. “You’ll be welcomed the moment you walk through our doors. There’s no judgment here—just a group of supportive people working toward their own fitness goals.”

Tricia encourages anyone looking for a supportive fitness community to take the first step. “Your journey is unique to you,” she says. “We’re here to meet you where you are and help you get to where you want to be.”

As The Athletic Club continues to grow, Tricia remains committed to making fitness accessible, engaging, and rewarding for all members. Whether someone is looking to gain strength, improve mobility, train for a sport or simply stay active, there’s a place for them at The Athletic Club.

“Fitness is about more than just working out,” says Tricia. “It’s about building a lifestyle that supports overall health and well-being. And we’re here to help make that happen.”

Testimonials

We love being part of The Athletic Club community! The variety of classes keeps our workouts exciting and challenging, and the supportive environment motivates us to stay consistent. As a personal trainer, I appreciate the knowledgeable instructors, and Duane enjoys how the classes help maintain his overall fitness. It’s a place where we both feel encouraged and inspired to stay active.

- Twila and Duane Walkeden

What a gorgeous space Tricia has designed; it is full of light and a variety of challenging workout equipment. Tricia’s coaching is always motivating and she expertly modifies for each client’s needs in her classes. It is amazing how she has developed a program where parents, grown children, grandparents and even grandbabies can work out together. An hour at the Athletic Club always makes the day better.

Southside PEMF Therapy:

Supporting wellness through cellular healing

Southside PEMF Therapy offers a powerful, non-invasive treatment that supports healing from the inside out. Using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy, certified practitioner Jayda Boren helps reduce inflammation, improve circulation and boost recovery—whether it’s for people, horses or livestock.

“PEMF therapy is all about helping the body heal itself,” says Jayda. “It works on a deep cellular level to reduce lactic acid build-up, smooth out scar tissue and get your body back to its natural state.”

A single 20-minute session can promote tissue healing, manage pain, increase blood oxygenation and improve mobility. From sprains and pulled muscles to broken bones and chronic inflammation, PEMF is a trusted tool for recovery and performance. Results are often felt after just one session.

Jayda launched Southside PEMF Therapy in October 2022, initially focusing on human clients at Olympia In Depth Performance. After a year, she relocated to Calgary and worked out of NuWest Medical Centre, treating college and pro-level athletes—especially in hockey and rodeo. By spring 2024, Jayda was working with top stock contractors, helping some of the country’s best bucking horses and bulls stay at peak performance.

“PEMF therapy is all about helping the body heal itself. It works on a deep cellular level to reduce lactic acid build-up, smooth out scar tissue and get your body back to its natural state.”

She returned to Weyburn in late 2024 and shifted focus back to human care for the winter months. Now based at The Athletic Club, Jayda continues to help people feel and move better every day.

Register your business. If operating under a name other than your own, register it with the Saskatchewan Corporate Registry. Additionally, secure necessary permits and licenses relevant to your industry.

Develop a comprehensive business plan. A well-crafted business plan outlines your business goals, strategies, financial projections, and operational plans. Resources like the WESK Business Plan Toolkit can help in this process.

Market your business. Develop a marketing strategy that leverages both traditional and digital channels to reach your target audience. Use social media platforms, local events and partnerships to enhance visibility.

Balancing books and blazing trails

Nancy McMahon brings decades of expertise and a West Coast spark to Weyburn accounting

When Nancy McMahon made the move from Vancouver Island to Weyburn in 2016, she wasn’t just chasing prairie skies—she was ready for a new challenge. With over 25 years of accounting experience under her belt, including time as a manager and partner in a mid-sized firm, Nancy was looking to carve out her own path.

“Starting my own corporation was the next step in my career,” says Nancy. “I looked for an accounting practice to buy, and when I found the one in Weyburn, I knew it was the right fit.”

Since launching N.M. McMahon CPA Professional Corporation, Nancy has made a name for herself as a go-to expert for both personal and business financial services. Her firm offers everything from tax planning and estate work to reviews, reorganizations and CRA support. She also provides industry-specific services in agriculture and oilfield accounting—fields she’s come to enjoy working in. “They’re a welcome challenge,” she says. “I get to guide people through business decisions

and help them grow their ventures. It’s rewarding work.”

She’s also got a few surprises up her sleeve. “I’m a commissioner of oaths, which people don’t always expect,” she says. “And I have my motorcycle licence—I used to do a lot of dirt biking before moving to Saskatchewan.”

ADVICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Running her own firm means Nancy knows a thing or two about the demands of entrepreneurship. “You need to do your homework,” she says. “Understand your market, know your competition, make sure there’s a need—and be prepared financially to sustain your business as it grows.”

Her best advice? Know your stuff. “Make sure it’s a business you understand well,” she says.

With a passion for her profession, decades of experience and a grounded presence in her prairie home, Nancy McMahon continues to support clients while making Saskatchewan her own— one tax return, one conversation and one margarita at a time.

LUXURY for the Everyday

At Cedar & Vine, Jo Beach creates timeless, functional fashion for women

As a mom of two and the founder of Cedar & Vine, Jo Beach knows firsthand that fashion needs to keep up with real life. That’s why every piece she designs is rooted in comfort, functionality, and quiet luxury—tailored for the everyday woman who juggles kids, work, errands, and everything in between.

“I design clothing that I’d want to wear—pieces that fit into my busy life but still make me feel put together,” says Jo. “I want every mom to feel like they can throw on something they love, feel comfortable in, and look great, no matter what the day brings.”

Designed by a mom, for moms

Cedar & Vine was born out of Jo’s own experience searching for clothing that matched her values and lifestyle— especially after becoming a mom. “I struggled to find clothes that were practical and stylish, especially while breastfeeding,” she explains. “The Breeze Top was one of the first pieces I designed for that reason. It had to be easy, functional, and beautiful—and it ended up working for women in all stages of motherhood.”

That approach—combining versatility with intention—is at the heart of the brand. Cedar & Vine garments are made using breathable, easy-to-care-for fabrics like linen, known for its durability and casual elegance.

“Linen is perfect for busy days,” says Jo. “It’s low maintenance but feels elevated, and it works for so many body types and seasons.”

Timeless, intentional fashion

With a focus on longevity, Jo designs every piece with simplicity, quality, and adaptability in mind. “I always ask myself, ‘Can this piece work for different occasions and last through different seasons?’” she says. “If the answer is yes, then it belongs in the collection.”

Jo with her daughter Ruthie

Jo also encourages women to invest in clothing they’ll truly live in. “We tend to splurge on outfits for rare events and skip investing in the clothes we wear every single day. I want to change that mindset. We deserve to feel good— even on the days we’re just home with the kids.”

“Look for pieces that fit your lifestyle and make you feel good. Get creative. Customizations can make a piece truly your own. And remember that style doesn’t have to be complicated. It should make your life easier and more joyful.”- Jo Beach

Built on balance

Running a business while raising a family is no small feat, but Jo embraces both roles with honesty and heart. “It doesn’t always feel like balance, but it’s rewarding to know I’m building something based on values that matter

to me,” she says. “My kids see me chasing my dreams, and I get to do it on my own terms.”

Her advice for other moms? “Look for pieces that fit your lifestyle and make you feel good. Get creative. Customizations can make a piece truly your own. And remember that style doesn’t have to be complicated. It should make your life easier and more joyful.”

With Cedar & Vine, Jo Beach is redefining what it means to dress well. It’s not about trends—it’s about feeling confident, relaxed, and ready for whatever the day brings.

TANSI TOES:

Hello to healthy, happy feet

Experience luxury foot care with Indigenous roots and a nurse’s touch

Weyburn’s Tansi Toes is changing the way people think about foot care. This unique clinic offers more than just a pedicure—it’s a fusion of spalevel comfort and advanced medical knowledge, rooted in Indigenous culture and led by Cree nurse and entrepreneur Mikayla Edy-Lizuck.

A journey from esthetics to nursing

What started as a career in esthetics has grown into a deeply personal and professional mission for Mikayla.

After years of offering pedicures and completing her nursing program—with the help of funding from her home reserve, One Arrow First Nation— Mikayla saw an opportunity to bring foot health and wellness together under one roof. The result is Tansi Toes, where clients receive care in a space that’s both relaxing and rooted in high-level safety standards.

A grandmother’s love, a community connection

The name “Tansi Toes” comes from the Cree word tansi, meaning “hello.” It’s a nod to Mikayla’s heritage and to the idea of saying hello to the part of ourselves we often overlook—our feet. “Our feet carry us from our first steps to our last moments,” says Mikayla. “We need to take care of them.”

For Mikayla, the connection to foot care goes back to childhood memories with her grandmother Lillian in Goodwater, Sask. “She used to let me paint her toenails with old Revlon polish,” says Mikayla. “It’s something I remember fondly, and now I think of her often as I work with my clients.”

In a touching twist of fate, Mikayla discovered that her new clinic space had once been home to her grandparents. “When I met Harmony from Ice & Ink, I noticed the green tones reminded me of my grandparents’ house. Turns out she had actually lived

Mikayla Edy-Lizuck

in that same house. That felt like a sign,” she says.

What to expect at Tansi Toes

Every appointment at Tansi Toes starts with an assessment and includes treatment tailored to the client’s needs. But it’s not just about function—it’s about experience. “We want people to feel at home, but also confident they’re in good hands,” says Mikayla. “That’s why we include extras like warm towels, salt scrubs, hydrating masks and foot and leg massages with every in-clinic treatment.”

Clients are greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere and complimentary drinks— sugar-free and regular—along with a high level of cleanliness and professionalism. Behind the scenes, Tansi Toes follows

strict sterilization and infection control protocols regulated by Mikayla’s nursing body. Tools go through ultrasonic cleaning, enzyme solutions and autoclave sterilization between every client. Services are offered both in-clinic and in-home, and clients can choose to add gel polish for a touch of beauty, even when mobility is limited.

A role model for the next generation

In 2024, Mikayla was named an Indigenous Role Model by Saskatchewan Polytechnic—a title she holds with pride. Her daughter Brystol, now three, is her biggest motivation. “This business allows me to spend more time with her and show her what women are capable of,” says Mikayla. “Anything she sets her mind to, she can do.”

Whether you’re managing a chronic condition or simply want to pamper your feet in a safe and soothing space, Tansi Toes offers a fresh approach to foot care— one that blends culture, care and comfort.

Style for the whole family, heart for the whole community

With six years in business, Annette Petersen keeps fashion personal in Weyburn

When Annette Petersen opened Route 39 Clothing Co., she saw a clear gap in the local market—Weyburn needed a menswear shop. Her husband and three sons were the catalyst for her entrepreneurial journey and still help in the store when she needs them.

It didn’t take long to realize the community was also looking for casual fashion for women, and soon after, kidswear joined the mix. Now, Route 39 is a go-to destination for stylish, quality clothing for the whole family—including babywear and shoes for all ages.

It's not work - it's a passion

Route 39 is more than just a retail space for Annette. It's a place for customers to connect with their community. "We help you get the fashion you want, and you don't have to wait for the parcel to arrive” says Annette. "I love what I do because I help people every day find what they’re looking for."

Shop

where it counts

Annette is passionate about giving back to the community and is grateful for the support she’s received. “Retail is tough, especially with online shopping,” she says. “Local businesses are the heart of our community. Now more than ever, we need to focus on keeping Weyburn the wonderful place we call home."

Located at 114 2nd Street, Route 39 carries the brands customers love— from classic denim to cozy knits, stylish outerwear to wardrobe basics. With fashion for men, women and kids, Annette has something for everyone.

Glow from the inside out

Tilly’s Glow Bar is where confidence, beauty, and self-care meet

When Chantelle Niemegeers first launched Tilly’s Glow Bar, it began as a fun way to earn extra income on her own schedule. But the deeper she got into the business, the more her passion grew.

“I wanted to offer more than a service—I wanted to create an experience that helps people feel confident and safe in their own skin,” Chantelle says. “It’s about elevating the beauty they already have.”

A safer way to glow

Tilly’s Glow Bar specializes in organic sunless tanning, a service Chantelle is deeply passionate about—both personally and professionally.

“My great-grandma passed away from skin cancer when I was 11,” she says. “So, offering a safe, healthy tan was something I cared about from the start. There’s still a lot of stigma around spray tans, and I really wanted to change the narrative.”

Unlike tanning beds, which require multiple sessions and come with serious risks, Tilly’s sunless tans use natural, organic ingredients with no fake colourants or dyes. “They’re perfect for sensitive skin,” says Chantelle. “And the best part? You only need one tan to get the look you want.”

Brows, teeth & beyond

In addition to tanning, Tilly’s Glow Bar is a growing one-stop shop, offering brow tint and lamination as well as teeth whitening. The brow service gives clients

Chantelle Niemegeers

- Chantelle Niemegeers

a fuller, more defined look in just 40 minutes, while the whitening treatment provides incredible results without sensitivity.

“Spray tanning will always be my first love,” Chantelle says, “but the teeth whitening has been such a fun and effective addition—I’ve been so happy with the feedback.”

A warm, welcoming vibe

Described by clients as cool, cute, relaxed, and fun, Tilly’s Glow Bar is as much about the atmosphere as it is the services. “I want every client to walk in and feel comfortable, and walk out glowing with confidence,” Chantelle says. “The best part of my job is getting those messages after an appointment—when someone tells me how great they feel or how at ease they were. That’s everything to me.”

Passion, personality & balance

Chantelle’s clients may not know she once performed in Saskatchewan Express and was deeply involved in musical theatre and singing. These days, her performance space has shifted to the studio and gym, where she not only works out but also teaches classes.

“I’m usually in full mom mode with my kids—Aria, Gunnar, and Maverick,” she says. “But I love staying active. Healthy body, healthy mind.”

Self-care for Chantelle includes gym time, skincare, the occasional facial or pedi and small joys like coffee from Michels or Starbucks, and shopping at Evelyn Lane or Twine & Twig.

HEALING WITH ENERGY

Prairie Wave PEMF Therapy offers a gentle, non-invasive path to wellness

At Prairie Wave PEMF Therapy, healing happens one pulse at a time. Using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) technology, Shannon Winter is helping people—and animals—feel better naturally. From chronic pain and inflammation to injury recovery and improved mobility, PEMF offers a gentle, drug-free approach to wellness. “PEMF works at the cellular level,” says Shannon. “It helps the body do what it’s meant to do—heal. It boosts circulation, reduces inflammation and supports the body’s natural repair process.”

Inspired by results, fuelled by purpose

Shannon’s journey with PEMF therapy is a personal one. After her daughter broke her foot, they turned to PEMF for help managing the pain and swelling. The results were immediate and eyeopening. “After just 20 minutes on the machine, she could feel a difference,” says Shannon. “It helped with the inflammation, the bone healing and even the nerve pain. It was a game-changer for her.”

Shannon had also seen the impact PEMF had on horses through her sister-inlaw’s work. The visible improvements in performance and comfort left a lasting impression. With those powerful experiences in mind, Shannon decided to invest in her own PEMF machine, and the training needed to share it with others.

That same sense of transformation is something Shannon sees in her clients today. “I was a skeptic at first,” says Weyburn client Julianne Paslawski, who turned to Prairie Wave after a year of constant knee pain following a soccer injury. “After my first session I could have cried—I could see the swelling was gone, I had full mobility, and no pain.” After just three short sessions, Julianne says her pain never returned.

Support for all ages and stages

PEMF is safe and effective for everyone from kids to seniors, and even pets and horses. Whether you’re recovering from a fracture, dealing with arthritis, managing TMJ or struggling with sciatica, PEMF therapy offers targeted support. It’s also used for knee and shoulder pain, rotator cuff issues and general aches that come with an active life. “Every client is different, so we always start with a conversation,” says Shannon. “We’ll talk about what’s going on and create a treatment plan that fits your needs.”

Some people feel a difference after just one session, while others benefit from two or three treatments close together before spacing them out. The goal is to reduce pain and support healing—eventually getting to the point where treatment is only needed for maintenance or flareups.

“Healing is the goal,” says Shannon. “I don’t want clients to feel like they have

to come forever. I want them to get better and stay better.”

Flexible care, close to home

Shannon offers flexible appointment times to suit busy schedules and provides monthly travelling appointments in Estevan. She can even bring her PEMF equipment to your home if needed, making care easy and convenient. “I try to make it as simple and stress-free as possible,” says Shannon. “Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain or recovering from an injury, PEMF can help.”

Ready to see how PEMF can support your healing journey? Reach out to Prairie Wave PEMF Therapy and book your first session today. Your wellness is just a pulse away.

Bloom takes root in Weyburn

New event celebrates connection, confidence, and getting your pink back

Bloom: Finding Your Pink is more than just a women’s day out—it’s a community-powered celebration of growth, resilience, and rediscovery. Launching this spring in Weyburn, the event brings together women from all walks of life for a day filled with connection, self-care, and inspiration.

Born from conversation, built with community

The idea for Bloom first sprouted nearly two decades ago with the Day of Discovery empowerment event led by Lindsee Michel. In recent years, through her Spilling Prairie Tea television show, the need for deeper connection among women has come into sharper focus. Encouraged by enthusiastic community feedback and a shared desire for more meaningful engagement, a new vision took root—and Bloom blossomed into reality.

The power of pink

The name Bloom reflects the event’s goal: helping women rediscover the vibrant parts of themselves that may have faded during life’s busiest seasons. Inspired by the flamingo metaphor—

where the bird loses its pink hue when depleted but regains it through nourishment—the event encourages women to reclaim their energy, confidence, and joy.

One powerful message

The takeaway is simple: when women take time to nourish themselves, they don’t just grow—they thrive. Bloom is here to help them do just that.

Created with 30+ local partners, attendees choose four sessions to enjoy along with lunch and keynote speaker. Tickets go on sale April 7— online only and in limited supply!

Follow Bloom on social media for updates or email bloomweyburn@gmail.com for details.

Fuelled by diversity, driven by heart

The Bloom planning committee is made up of eight dynamic women, each bringing a unique background and perspective:

• Lindsee Michel – Salon owner/stylist, Spilling Prairie Tea

• Lindsay Manko-Bauche – Adult education instructor

• Monica Osborn – Executive director

• Terry Jordens – Superintendent of student services and assessment

HELPING SMALL BUSINESSES THRIVE

Ardell Small Business

Solutions provides more than just numbers—it offers peace of mind.

When Ardell Waldner founded her business in 2013, it wasn’t just about bookkeeping—it was about building a better life for her family while supporting other entrepreneurs on their own journeys.

“I had a toddler and a teenager at home,” says Ardell. “Nap time and hockey all the time—big kid and little kid stuff filled my days and nights. I was struggling with childcare, so I had to make changes. I was already doing a few sets of books on the side, but I couldn’t keep up. Starting my business gave me the flexibility I needed.”

That business has grown into Ardell Small Business Solutions, a one-stop shop for small business owners in Weyburn and beyond. Ardell provides bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, GST/ PST/WCB reporting and business management services—supporting local entrepreneurs so they can focus on what they do best.

“People always seem lost and confused about their finances, especially when it comes to how taxes and money work,” she says. “I enjoy helping people navigate the ups and downs and figure out what will help them make a living and a life. It’s very rewarding.”

Over the years, Ardell has built strong relationships with her clients, many of whom have become close friends. “I have amazing clients who’ve all become a part of my life,” she says. “We’re in this together.”

Balancing the demands of business ownership and parenting hasn’t always been easy, but Ardell makes it work by staying organized and scheduled. Her office outside the home gives her space to focus and step away when needed.

“It’s a real struggle to make it all work— life, family, self-care, making a living,” she says. “So, I stay very scheduled to meet all my deadlines. If I want to take the kids

to a hockey game or a movie, I’ll work extra hours the day before or go in early so I can leave early.”

Waldner is also a big believer in prioritizing mental and physical health.

“I make sure to go for a walk every day—sunrise or sunset if I can,” she says. “In the winter, I go to the Spark Centre track. I’ll listen to the Motivation app, Audibles, or a playlist I made called ‘Start the Day’—it helps get me centered.”

“I eat a lot of protein and nutrient-dense food, take vitamins, and use my phone in a positive way—timers and reminders to eat, check in with the kids, and stay on track.”

Through it all, Ardell continues to find joy in her work and gratitude in her life.

“I’m happy with my life right now,” she says. “I have my moments, but the good outweighs the bad, and I realize how blessed I am.”

EXPERT ADVICE

EXPERT ADVICE BUILD YOUR BUSINESS WITH CONFIDENCE

Nancy McMahon shares practical advice for women entrepreneurs in Saskatchewan

Starting and growing a business takes courage—and for many women entrepreneurs, it also takes support, strategy and solid financial planning. Nancy McMahon, a seasoned accountant in Weyburn, says having the right tools and advice from day one can set the stage for long-term success.

Start with a solid plan

“Women are starting businesses in every industry, from retail and wellness to agriculture and tech,” Nancy says. “But they often face unique challenges, like limited access to capital or balancing family responsibilities.”

That’s why a well-thought-out business plan is key. “A strong plan outlines your goals, your market and most importantly—your numbers,” she says. “Know what it costs to run your business, set achievable income targets and price your products or services to reflect the value you offer.”

Don’t be afraid to ask for help Nancy often sees women trying to manage every aspect of their business on their own. “It’s easy to fall into the habit of doing it all,” she says. “But

“You don’t have to know everything. But with good advice and a supportive team, you’ll feel more confident making decisions—and that confidence is key to growing your business.” - Nancy McMahon

reaching out to professionals early—an accountant, bookkeeper, legal advisor or mentor—can save you time, money and unnecessary stress.”

Know what supports are available

There are several programs and grants aimed specifically at helping women in business. “You’d be surprised how many resources go unused simply because people don’t know they exist,” Nancy says. She encourages business owners to explore federal and provincial options that offer funding, training or mentorship opportunities.

Get tax-ready from day one

When it comes to taxes, preparation is everything. “Keep good records, separate your business and personal expenses, and understand how your business is structured,” Nancy says. “Incorporation may be a smart move once your profits grow, but every case is different.”

Build a support system

Nancy’s final piece of advice? Surround yourself with the right people. “You don’t have to know everything,” she says. “But with good advice and a supportive team, you’ll feel more confident making

decisions—and that confidence is key to growing your business.”

Whether you’re just starting out or scaling up, Nancy and her team are here to help you build a strong financial foundation and thrive in your business journey.

A non-invasive solution for hair loss available from Stacey at The Hair Shop

Hair loss can be a deeply personal and emotional experience. Whether due to genetics, illness or other factors, many people struggle with thinning hair or baldness. Stacey Pederson, a journeyperson hairstylist and certified scalp micropigmentation (SMP) specialist, offers an innovative and non-invasive solution to help clients regain their confidence.

What is scalp micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic procedure that uses micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. This technique creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles, helping to restore the look of fuller hair. Stacey explains that SMP is a great option for both men and women experiencing various forms of hair loss, including male and female pattern baldness, alopecia and scarring.

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp, creating the appearance of fuller hair. It’s a longlasting, low-maintenance solution for those experiencing hair thinning, baldness or scarring.

“SMP gives immediate results and doesn’t require months of waiting

like other hair loss treatments,” says Stacey. “It’s a game-changer for people looking for a low-maintenance, longlasting solution.”

What to expect from SMP treatment

Clients typically need three to four sessions to achieve the desired look, with each session taking approximately two hours. Treatments are scheduled at least a week apart, allowing the pigment to settle naturally. Stacey ensures that every treatment is customized to match the client’s scalp, hairline, and skin tone for a seamless, natural appearance.

The procedure itself is relatively painless, rated about two out of 10 on the pain scale. There is no bleeding, scabbing or scarring, and most clients feel back to normal within an hour.

Long-lasting, natural results

SMP lasts for several years, with most clients opting for a touch-up every four to five years to maintain their look. The pigments used are vegan, carbon black with a touch of brown, ensuring a soft, realistic result that doesn’t change colour over time.

“SMP is for everyone, including those with grey or salt-and-pepper hair,” says Stacey. “We can match your natural hair colour or create depth to frame your face.”

More than just SMP: complete hair loss solutions

Beyond SMP, Stacey provides comprehensive hair loss solutions, including scalp assessments and hair loss consultations. Using advanced analysis techniques, she helps clients understand the root cause of their hair loss and determine the best course of action.

Stacey Pederson

She is also certified in Jon Renau toppers, offering breathable, realistic hairpieces for all stages of hair loss. In addition, she provides a variety of hair extension services, ensuring that clients have multiple options for enhancing their hair’s appearance.

These expertly designed hairpieces are breathable and seamlessly complement your biological hair, adding coverage and volume from hairline to crown. They are designed for all budgets by offering high quality products in human hair, synthetic and heat-resistant synthetic fiber.

“My passion for alternative hair solutions comes from my own experience with hair loss,” says Stacey. “I know how overwhelming it can be, and I want

to create a safe space where people can explore non-invasive solutions without shame.”

Let’s go outside

Spending time outdoors is one of life’s simplest pleasures, and having a cozy, functional outdoor space makes it even more enjoyable. Whether you have a large backyard, a small patio or a balcony, thoughtful design can transform any space into a relaxing retreat you’ll love to spend time in. With the right elements, you can create an outdoor area that is inviting and practical, perfect for entertaining, unwinding or simply enjoying the Saskatchewan nature that surrounds us.

Define your space

Add warmth and ambience

area or an outdoor storage box for cushions ensures your setup stays protected year-round.

Personalize your space

Start by determining how you want to use your outdoor area. Do you need a dining space for family meals? A lounge area for reading and relaxing? A firepit for gatherings with family and friends? Defining different zones—such as a sitting area, a cooking space or even a small garden—can help you make the most of your space. Using outdoor rugs, planters or furniture arrangement can create natural separations between these areas.

Choose comfortable and durable furniture

Comfort is key when it comes to outdoor living. Look for weather-resistant furniture with cozy cushions, ensuring they can withstand the elements while still providing a welcoming feel. Hammocks, swing chairs or cushioned benches add a touch of relaxation, while foldable or stackable pieces work well for smaller spaces. Adding soft textiles, like throw blankets or outdoor pillows, can make the space feel even more inviting.

The right lighting can completely transform an outdoor space. String lights, lanterns or solar-powered lamps add a warm and inviting glow, making the space feel cozy even after the sun goes down. A firepit or tabletop fire bowl provides warmth and creates a natural gathering place that’s perfect for making s’mores on a summer night.

The best outdoor spaces reflect your personality and style. Whether it’s through decorative lanterns, patterned cushions or a DIY outdoor bar, small personal touches make a space feel like home. Consider adding a water feature for a peaceful ambience or incorporating outdoor speakers for music and entertainment.

Creating a cozy and functional outdoor space doesn’t require a major renovation—just a bit of creativity and some planning. Whether it’s a spot

Incorporate greenery and natural elements

Plants bring life to any outdoor area. Consider potted plants, vertical gardens or raised flower beds to add greenery without taking up too much space. If you have room, trees or shrubs can provide shade and privacy. Even a small herb garden can make the space feel fresh while offering the added benefit of homegrown ingredients for cooking.

Make it functional for all seasons

A well-designed outdoor space can be enjoyed beyond just the summer months. Adding a pergola or umbrella provides shade in the heat, while outdoor heaters, fire pits or weatherproof blankets help extend using your space into cooler seasons. A covered seating

for morning coffee, an evening gathering place or a quiet escape, a well-designed outdoor area allows you to make the most of your time outside.

RENTAL INCOME, REAL GAINS

Should you hold property personally or in a corporation?

Thinking about buying a rental property? Let’s look at how holding a rental property personally or in a corporation can impact your taxes—and your long-term financial goals.

Know how your rental income is taxed

When you earn rental income personally, the income is taxed at your personal marginal rate. You can deduct expenses like mortgage interest, property taxes and maintenance, and if you incur a loss, you may be able to use it to offset other income.

What to consider with corporate ownership

Holding a rental in a corporation has its own pros and cons. “If the income is considered passive, it’s taxed at a much higher corporate rate than active business income,” Nancy McMahon says. “While a corporation can offer liability protection and potential tax deferral when retaining profits, losses are

trapped inside the corporation and can’t be used to offset personal income.”

Is rental income really passive?

Nancy says many investors see rental properties as a passive income strategy, especially for retirement. “But it’s important to understand that rental income—while generally passive—can become more hands-on than people expect,” she says. Managing tenants, maintenance and taxes can take time and effort.

Nancy’s tip for staying taxsmart

Before deciding how to hold your property, Nancy recommends working with a tax professional. “Your best option depends on your income, goals and whether you’re in it for long-term growth or cash flow.”

Want to make the most of your rental income? A little planning can go a long way. Contact Nancy and the team at N.M. McMahon CPA Professional Corporation at 306.842.5344 for advice.

“Don’t forget, if your corporation owns the property and you or a relative lives there, you must charge fair market rent—or risk tax implications.”
