2024 Bull Sale We look forward to hosting you February 10, at the farm. 2023 was a great year here, and a year of a few firsts for our family. Following bull sale season, we put in our first commercail crops and it was our first big year grain farming. Into the summer months, we also did our own silaging as well, which was new. It made for an enjoyable week, and we had a great crew of family, friends and neighbors pitching in to get the pit all put up. Thankfully, the pit was also alot larger in size than the past few years as well, which took some stress off leading into planning for feeding through the winter. Thrroughout the growing season, we also watching a corn crop grow down our laneway for the fist time as well, and for the past month the cowherd has been grazing the standing stalks, and doing quite well. Drilling another water well, and building backgrounder pens is now on the horizon, and hopefully within a year, all of our livestock can be based right here at the homeyard. Our kids have been busy all along the way, and keeping us busier each month it seems. Between their heifers, steers and horse 4H projects, school sports, and junior shows, alot of days are spent on the road getting them to and from. Thier passion for what we do is evident, and we can see that these years pass quickly, so we are trying to enjoy them! 2024 marks our first ever live bull sale, here at the farm A long time in the making, we have been selling bulls since we started; in 2010. In 2023 we did an online FarmGate sale, and this year we decided to
move ahead with a live sale, the first in what we hope will be many, many years of upcoming sales. Along the way, we have met some truley great cattlemen, and we are so grateful that so many people have taken a chance and supuporting a young couple like us over the past years. Repeat customers and new, you have all kept us driving forward and working towards putting together theset of bulls we have today. We have gone in a different direction with the sale in the past couple of years, and we have really incorporated our Herdtrax Data Management System into the pages before you. We have pushed hard to use the program as fully and accurately as possible, so we feel it provides the best possible information on our animals for you. We have also teamed up with people for the sale who we feel really represent the direction we want to go. Clerking the sale is CCHMS; Cow Calf Health Management Solutions, a crew of people that are at the center of it all in this herd. Providing the online services is TEAM Auctions, the guys that have been selling our steer crops and cows for over a decade. After the clock has gone to “ENDED” and no bidding has occurred, and the clock goes to 0 the computer will declare the sale finished. Please note as the clock goes counts down to 0 you may see “PENDING” at this time the computer is confirming there are not last second bids on the network incase of poor internet connections to eliminate a last second snipe bid. progressing the herd. As you see in the catalog, we have included various Indexes. Through measuring and recording performance on our cattle, we are able to ‘performance test’ them. This is a way for us to measure their heritable differences, and use the results to select animals that we expect will transmit their superior performance to their offspring. Genetically superior individuals are easier to identify when you compare them with animals that are managed similarly (in Herd) vs trying to account for all of the environmental influences and compare between herds, (Breed Association EPDS). There is a very wide variation of environmental differences when you compare cattle across various herds. Factors like location, management, health and nutrition all vary so widely that the performance tests on the animals require many different management groups to even become useful. With using the Index system, we are comparing ‘apples to apples’. You are looking at the numbers produced all within our herd, and if the animal is ranked within the highest percentiles, it means that against all of it’s peers, it has excelled. There are 4 selection indexes; Herdtrax Maternal Index (HMI), Herdtrax Terminal Index (HTI), Herdtrax All Purpose Index (HAPI) and Cow Prouction Value (CPV). The Herdtrax Maternal Index (HMI) is designed to show which cows can consistently wean the fastest growing, oldest calves at weaning. It combines the weights of the calves at their 205 day weights, and the calf’s age at weaning. This way the index is favourable to older calves, (promoting fertility and first service conception in the cows) and calves that weigh more. The Herdtrax Terminal Index (HTI) is designed to show which cows are able to consistently produce calves with desireable carcass traits. It combines the carcass weights vs age of animal, with the ribeye area vs carcass weight, adding in the marbing grade. Using these three main carcass perameters, the index can successfully provide a ranking. The Cow Production Value (CPV) calculates the total lbs of all progeny a cow has weaned in her life, (according to age) down to a Pounds Produced Per Day of Life basis. This can be used as an economic indicator on your cows; using your costs to keep a cow per day, you can then divide the pounds she produces on an average day by that number, and see exactly what that cow profits in a day, a year, and her life.
The Herdtrax All Purpose Index (HAPI) is the index that meant to compare cows (in herd) based on their ability to be strong maternally and terminally. It combines both the HMI Index and the HTI Index (as explained above) and also accounts for both direct and secondary replacements that are retained in the herd. Then using this number, the cows can be sorted into a bell curve (See Page 10) which effieciently displays where all of the cattle in your herd are currently performing. A HAPI of 100.0 is used as standard, falling right on the 50% Percentile. Any cow with a HAPI of less than 100, is currently performing in the bottom half of your herd. We use this system to cull out the bottom end of the HAPI Index, and also to breed the bottom cows terminally. The top end of your bell curve (Those cows with HAPI over 100) Are then ranked into Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Elite. The categories are not even; a much larger number of cows will rank bronze than silver, and more silvers than gold, and so on up to Platinum and Elite. For perspective, in our herd of 600 females, we currently are running 33 Gold Cows, 10 Platinum cows, and only 5 Elite Cows. We have found great value in working with Waylon Wise and CCHMS (Cow Calf Health & Management Solutions). They have designed the indexing system able to be somewhat customized to each operation. For example, an operation that is currently trying to increase their weaning weights might put a higher emphasis on the weaning weight portion of the Index, whereas an operation which is trying to emphasize cows calving in the first cycle might put a higher emphasis on their cows’ calving interval. This enables us to focus on certain traits and select for them, to make progress quicker. Some prodcuers will pick carcasses, some will pick maternal traits.
What makes the HAPI Index useful, is that it is an all encompassing number. By culling and selecting for the a higher HAPI index, our weaning weights,
performance, feed effieciency, calving intervals, and fertility have all measurably
impoved yearly. Years ago, we cautiously reviewed the reports and data each fall,
not wanting to ‘sell her’ in case there was a mistake. In time, it’s proven itself over and over again. The index is accurate. We have come to trust it, and we value it more than ever.

OUR FUTURE GENERATION OF SALE HEIFERS & BULL RAISERS Over the years, we have adapted our commercial breeding program towards the inclusion of pedigreed F1 genetics, in addition to our existing commercial herd. From there on, we bred groups of purebred females to strong herdsires of the opposing breed. The offspring have potential in many avenues including strong commercial replacements, recipient females, foundation commercial cows, and sale heifers. By crossing alot of purebred replacements their first year, we also try to ensure that the top ‘up and coming’ seedstock females will also have an impact on the commercial herd. The motivation behind the F1 program is an ever increasing demand for the blaldy females. Our goal is to provide a large group of females with a pedigree, and data to back their performance. Every detail that we keep on the purebred herd, including birthweights, weaning weights, yearling weights, body condition scores, birth and health records, herd health protocols, and udder and feet scoring is already fully
integrated into the commercial herd as well. Wanting to utilize this information to it’s fullest potential and broaden it furthermore, we have included feed efficiency, cowherd indexing, and return on investment calculations on a per-cow basis. Our hope is that this will help us over time to advance the commercial herd into a select, elite group of cows. By doing it on a large scale, our hopes is that we can breed exceptional replacement females for our customers. It is our goal to begin including groups of these heifers into the sale in the years ahead.
Our objective is to use this program as quality control on the seedstock females, ensuring that every dam of a sale bull has excelled under the exact prerequisite conditions which her son is expected to breed.
