Our family looks forward to hosting you again this season! We are a family of 6. Travis and Becky, and kids Joni (8), Grady (7), Morgan (5), and Orin (3). We live about 20 miles East of Didsbury on the farm. To some of you, this is a new location in the past 24 months. We have been breeding Herefords and Red Angus bulls since 2008, and hope that if we are lucky, will have it continued on for us for coming generations. We are passionate about our cattle, about our farm, and about our industry. We have a keen interest in data and functionality, and we believe that what makes a herd strong, is it’s functionality and its profitability. We hope to tour you through the pen this year, and we look forward to seeing you.

HOMEFRONT Hello and welcome to our 2021 pen of bulls. For us, like everyone else, the past year has been a bit of a wild ride. With the lockdown coming into effect only 6 days before our Open House last year, this year’s bulls bring us full circle to an entire year of not knowing what is around the corner. Thankfully, despite the craziness in the political world, our summer last year was filled with plenty of rain and a good growing season. Our feed came off with adequate yeilds and good quality, and we were able to dodge the many hailstorms that spotted our area throughout the spring. Our cowherd hit pastures in 2020 at around 540 cows, spread from Linden west to the moutains; Caroline spanning all the way up to Barrhead. We haul alot of miles, to get them to their summer pastures. With grass being so widespread, we often find that the breeding groups are faced with varying challenges throughout the season on the nutrition side. Depending on rainfall, some of the groups are often grazing areas that would be considered very hard grass, as well as others where the grass is so lush that the cattle have a hard time maintaining body coniditon. We are trying to breed cattle that can adapt to both scenarios. Cattle that are going out, breeding quickly, and coming home in good flesh. Into fall, we begin hauliung groups home late September until the end of October. They are turned out onto hayfields and stubble grazing within about 8 miles of home. The groups grow to about 150-200 cows each as the liners come home. The cattle continue to fall graze as long as possible, averaging December to January 1 before the first feed will be taken out. The herd is generally weaned in 3 stages; the bull calves about mid October, followed in a couple of weeks by the heifer calves, and finally the steer calves in November. This enables us to work the cattle through our facilities without overcrowding, and allow adequate time for the cattle to wean off before moving groups on. All of the heifers calves are backgrounded, as well as about half of the steers. The other half of the steer crop is sold as a group off the cow. The bull calves are culled through at weaning time and then put into a backgrounder pen as well. All of the calves graze solely on their mothers without creepfeed or added supplementation, until they enter the pens and begin a starter ration at weaning time. In 2020, we began making some big changes to the program in terms of dates. We have pushed back our 2021 calving season, and hope to have no calves hit the ground before the second week of March. This decision was in conjunction with a few other changes around home, and ultimately is providing us with the time needed to take on some additional projects in the spring. As 2020 was a year of uncertainty, we decided to diversify things a bit to help alleivatie some of the stresses that came with it. Through some local partnerships, we took on some custom farming operations; including high clearance spraying and baling big squares/ hauling straw. It amounted to a ton of time away from home in the summer and fall months, but is proving to be a great addtion to our operation. Our family seen some pretty amazing benefits to the lockdown. It provided us with many consecutive months of having no school schedules to adhere to, so the camping trips were many, and we crammed about as many summer acitivities into a few months as I could possibly name off. One thing we have come to learn; our kids live an amazing life, filled with adventures, animals, freedom, and friends. We couldn’t ask for a better community, or a more beautiful place to raise our family.

A very catchy Mammoth son, 116H has been a favorite numerous times while we have toured the pen. He has calving ease, and his mother is one of the youngest cows to have raised a bull in the offering.

We sold a sister to 80H in the Red Roundup Sale in 2019 to Reese Wildman. She has brought that heifer back to the $100 000 Junior futurity since. The cow family here has a ton of power, and beautiful structure and udder quality. 80H could very well be his sire’s replacement here, as Capitol is 6 years old.

HERD MANAGEMENT MAKING A LIVING ON A COWHERD UNIFORMITY | QUALITY | DATA 20

LIGHT ON CCHMS AND DATA MANAGEMENT Each year we try to incorporate new ideas or practises into the herd, to improve how we are doing things at Redline. In 2020, we enrolled our herd into the Cow Calf Herd Health and Management System, with veterinarian Waylon Wise. While we have been on Herdtrax for a number of years with the herd, we are very much looking forward to working with Waylon to bring the data side of our operation to a level where it can be pivotol and influencial in our decision making. We have found as our herd has grown, the need for intricate tracking and detail management has increased just as rapidly. As we have gotten to know Waylon, we are confident that his enthusiasm and knowledge will help us excel in this sector. Cow/Calf Health and Management Solutions (CCHMS) collaborates with Redline Livestock to manage their entire herd through an integrated and comprehensive health, nutrition and production management program. Detailed data is collected on each individual animal at all key health and production points and is kept in a secure web-enabled database called Herdtrax®. We continually monitor and audit this data and use this information to improve the health, welfare, performance and efficiency of the entire operation. Each bull will have an extensive Bull Soundness Examination which includes soundness of structure, palpation of testis and internal sex glands, scrotal circumference, examination of the penis as well as verifying sufficient sperm motility and morphology. By testing in the later season, we avoid bulls which can be prepubertal or stressed; and likely will be satisfactory as the days are getting longer and the grass gets greener. There is considerable selection pressure placed on young bulls and 30% of all bulls will fail to produce an adequate sample at 12 mo., 15% at 14 mo., 5% at 16 mo. Willowline Labradors Aside from the cowherd, there is another group of breeding females that keeps us busy throughout the seasons. Becky has been breeding Labrador Retrievers now for 5 years. Much the same as breeding cattle, the dogs have presented many challenges and learning experiences along the way, but we are very happy with dogs we have been fortunate enough to raise so far, and the homes they have gone to. All of the labs are CKC Registered, and are fully health tested, with OFA certified hips and elbows. Our dogs are all English bloodines, making them the shorter, stockier styled labs that you would see. We currently are fortunate to offer puppies throught the year in every color; black, chocolate, yellow, and fox red. So far, the best part about breeding the labs has been watching puppies go into the homes of our friends. As the dogs have grown, it seems more people from the community have gained interest in them, and we have more and more requests from people we know, looking for that special, once-in-a-lifetime, family dog. For us, the labs can fill that spot very easily. They have a very calm and laid back temperment, and they absolutely love children.
