AKIRA TORIYAMA

Dragonball Creator, has Died at 68

Akira Toriyama was born on April 5th, 1955 in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Toriyama is best known for being the creator of the world wide sensation that is Dragonball. And he is also known for being the primary inspiration for the artists and creators of almost every other famous Manga and Anime created from the 1980’s to present day.

From an early age, Akira had a natural born love of art and drawing. He was inspired in 1961 by Disney’s One Hundred and One Dalmatian’s and began drawing all of the animals. He then began loving the Manga series Astro Boy. And through elementary and intermediate school he was known for drawing his favorite anime and manga characters and also anime caricatures of his friends. It was clear he had talent, and when interviewed on early inspirations, he actually gave a lot of credit to the Ultraman TV show and also Gamera and similar kaiju films. Right after high school, where he focused on art and design, he went immediately into the work force and worked as poster designer for an advertising agency. However, after three years he decided that the 9 to 5 grind was not for him and he quit. He then began submitting his early Manga works to contests in Weekly Shonen Magazine and Weekly Shonen Jump. It was at the latter where he caught the eye of the person that would become his editor, Kazuhiko Torishima.

His first contest submission was actually rejected because it was not considered original and did not meet the criteria to be in Shonen Jump; it was a parody of Star Wars. However, even though it was not accepted, Torishima took the time to write a personal letter to Toriyama and tell him that his artwork was amazing and that he should continue submitting manga to the monthly contest. And that was how his first published work, Wonder Island, was eventually published. After brief success, his next few Manga’s flopped and the

editor suggested he try drawing a female lead character. So he created the Tomato the Cutesy Gumshoe character and manga, which had some success and eventually led him to create his first true mega hit, Dr. Slump, which featured the super strong android girl Arale. Dr. Slump was serialized by Weekly Shonen Jump from 1980 to 1984 and in 1981 it earned him the Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen or shōjo manga series of the year. Over time Dr. Slump sold over 35 million copies of the manga. Dr. Slump had equal success as an anime series and soon Akira Toriyama was a household name throughout Japan and Asia. The anime aired on Fuji TV in the 7PM slot Primetime on Wednesdays and this slot was held for Toriyama’s anime works for the next 18 years. The next suggestion from his editor would be to follow his other passion for Kung-Fu shows and create a Martial Arts themed manga, and hence Dragon Boy was created as a short two part series about a young boy skilled in martial arts escorting a princess home. It had immediate success and was later morphed by Toriyama into the international sensation, Dragon Ball.

4 RED INK MAGAZINE
4

Dragon Ball, created in 1984, went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, with serialization in dozens of countries, as both a manga and an anime. Dragon Ball and its follow up series, became one of the most successful and best-selling mangas of all time, selling over 350 million copies, worldwide. Dragon Ball is also credited with bringing the interest in manga and Anime to the west. Today, Dragon Ball which is synonymous with Goku can be seen in everything from worldwide advertising, right now there is a Cereal box for Reese’s Puffs that has Goku and other Dragon Ball characters as a promotion, and Goku has been in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as one of the largest and most popular floats for several years. Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super are arguably the most popular anime series ever created. And even the other juggernauts animes like One Piece and Naruto have inspiration from Dragon Ball, and their respective creators Eiichiro Oda, and Masashi Kishimoto credit Akira Toriyama as their primary inspiration. It can be argued that without Akira Toriyama, the global phenomenon of anime that we are experiencing right now would not exist.

Akira, also was the lead character artist for several videogame franchises including Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, and Tobal No. 1 and 2. He also developed the model design for a mini one-person electric car for CQ motors, called the QVOLT. Other Mangas created by Toriyama include Cross Epoch,

Cowa!, Kajika and Sand Land. Cross Epoch is worth mentioning because it is actually a very special one off manga that was created jointly in 2006 with One Piece’s Creator Eiichiro Oda and features characters from both Dragon Ball and One Piece together in different roles than their usual. Sand Land is worth mentioning because it was going to be Toriyama’s first selfpublished anime movie and series and Video Game; he died before the Anime’s premiere on March 20th, 2024 and the video game will be releasing on April 25th,2024. And later this year, the new Dragon Ball Series, called Dragon Ball DAIMA is set to release as well.

An interesting fact is that in an interview, Akira Toriyama told reporters that his favorite created character was Piccolo from Dragon Ball. And in regard to this, it appears that Toriyama may have had a premonition of his impending death, because in the very last manga panel for Dragon Ball Super that he created, he actually edited the original design and added an two panel spread of Piccolo Smiling and then waving goodbye to the readers. Was it coincidence? Possibly… However the fact of the very last piece of art that Akira Toriyama’s pen touched being his favorite character, Piccolo, seemingly breaking the fourth wall and Waving goodbye to the readers just a day before his death, gives me chills. Continued from page 4 (Akira Toriyama)

I can speak for myself and tell you that Dragon Ball is in fact the anime series that got me and my family interested and excited about anime, it was the first anime I ever watched in my 20s and it was the first anime my youngest daughter watched at age 4 and became the theme of her 5th birthday. Anime has been a source of enjoyment and inspiration to me for the last 25 years and it is all because of Akira Toriyama. I am fairly certain hat the rest of the world shares this sentiment and I know for a fact that the saga of Dragon Ball will carry on forever with the spirit of Akira Toriayma inspiring all future manga artists involved. And if any proof is needed that Akira Toriyama is an influence the world over, just look at Lima, Peru, where one of the largest murals was just created by over 45 different artists to pay tribute to Akira Toriayma and Dragon Ball. The mural is 360 feet long and 20 feet tall, and was created right after Akira Toriyama’s death was announced, and it was unveiled to the world on March 24th , 2024 and is located on block 9 of Avenida Paseo de la República, near the National Stadium of Lima in Peru. Additionally, right after his death there were many tributes made on a larger scale. In Mexico City, thousands of people gathered in Zocalo, the main square of Mexico City and did a group Genki-Dama or Spirit Bomb. And similarly in Argentina an even larger group of over 30,000 people gathered and did the same thing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and after doing the spirit bomb, the entire crowd can be heard Chanting “Akira, Akira.” There are world leaders and celebrities that have died to a lesser send off than Akira Toriyama.

On March 1st, 2024 Akira Toriyama died of Subdural hematoma in his brain, and he had just recently under gone brain surgery to remove a tumor from his brain a few weeks prior to his death. He was only 68 and in the prime of his life and career. Akira Toriyama and his creations hold a dear spot in my heart personally and also in the hearts of his hundreds of millions of fans all over the world. The spirit of Toriyama will live on forever in his manga, anime and video game works that are enjoyed and loved by fans everywhere. Akira Toriyama, you were taken from this world far too soon, and we are grateful to have been blessed with your amazing creations. You will be missed but never forgotten. Rest in Peace good sir and say hello to King Kai for us.

PARADIGM PARTY BAND

Rocked Saint Cloud Florida for St. Patrick’s Day

Paradigm Party Band is an 8 piece dance band specializing in providing dynamic and engaging performances for various event segments, including General Session Openers, Trade Show Floor Opening Ceremonies, Awards Banquets, Dinners, Welcome Receptions, and closing night festivities, and Weddings. We are a REAL BAND - not a cooperative of musicians. We have been performing together as a cohesive team since 2016. We are fully self contained with audio and stage lighting. There are no hidden costs to add these items. Our band is passionate about entertaining audiences of all ages, and with our wide repertoire spanning various genres, we have the ability to cater to diverse attendee preferences. We pride ourselves on delivering memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression. Our star-studded line-up of experienced vocalists and musicians have had clients raving since 2016! Paradigm Party Band delivers time and time again covering Top 40, Variety, Classic Rock, 70's 80's 90's, Pop, Country, Latin crossover hits, and Cocktail Jazz making Paradigm one of the most diverse bands. Much more than a party band, dance band, or cover band - Paradigm is an EXPERIENCE!

Paradigm Party Band kept Saint Cloud, FL dancing ‘til 11 pm on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day. They provided a concert for the annual St. Patrick’s Day event in downtown Saint Cloud. From start to finish, the entire crowd was on their feet and moving to the music. And what a musical performance it was. The band members and vocalists provided incredible covers of every genre imaginable; from May-May singing pitch perfect Whitney Houston songs, to the fast paced rendition of Pitbull’s Fireball, every note and every word was performed with absolute perfection; to the point of being unrecognizable from the original artists. Even the band matched the music note for note, with the guitarist having incredible solo rifts whenever applicable. It was a true concert and did not feel like your typical “cover” performance that you would find in a small venue or small town event.

Paradigm Party Band gives the kind of performance that could sell out a stadium, and their pride in their craft shines through in every song. Thank you for waking up the sleepy town of Saint Cloud and providing this Irishman with a memorable St. Patty’s Day event. We can’t wait to see you guys perform again. Continued from page 18 Red Ink Magazine had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Summer Alexandria, this is what this amazing, incredibly talented Modelr/Actress/Designer had to tell us.

RED INK: Who or what influenced you to become a designer, model & actress?

SA: As far as modeling, it was my mom. My mom modeled for her high school in our hometown and of course I wanted to be like my mom. It was my mom’s idea to start my yoga line, Été Alexandrie, because of my love for fitness wear. And acting was something I picked up in elementary school as I attended a fine arts school.

RED INK: Being so young, how do you manage your time for designing, modeling and acting?

SA: Big shout out my mom because she is my manager and makes sure I meet deadlines. She does all the communication with my agency and my manufacturer making sure everything gets done. I also know how to manage my time whenever I don’t have school so a lot of late nights getting things done.

RED INK: What are you currently working on now?

SA: Right now I am working on my next line for my brand and also I am preparing for college!

RED INK: As a designer, do you have a favorite collection you’re most proud of?

SA: Definitely my last line! I feel like

I have new ideas every time I design and get better each time. And I’m getting comfortable with creating what I like.

RED INK: If you could design a collection for a celebrity, who would it be and why?

SA: That’s a tough question! I would love to design and collaborate with a women’s basketball player as they are really in their prime! I would love to work with Angel Reese or Flau’Jae Johnson as they are really in their bag right now!

RED INK: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

SA: I definitely see myself traveling as a model, I see my line being a nationally known brand, and functioning as nurse practitioner of dermatology. I also see myself in my prime in the acting game as well.

RED INK: What can we expect next from you?

SA: You can expect some really great pictures coming out soon along with my new line coming out in September! I’m also hoping that I also can add some more pictures to my modeling portfolio.

This concludes our interview with Summer Alexandria, she is truly an amazing young woman with a full focus on what she wants to do. Support this amazing designer. Check out her social media sites.

Atlanta Caribbean Carnival

Atlanta, GA (Sonique Solutions)

– After a period of anticipation and excitement, the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival proudly announces its return as a unified festival for 2024.

In a celebration of vibrant culture, rich traditions, and the spirit of unity, the annual festival promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for attendees from all walks of life.

In 1977, they performed at President Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural Ball and since then have received their share of platinum and gold singles, albums, and other industry kudos; most notably a 1980 Grammy for “Shining Star” written and produced by Paul Richmond & Leo GrahamIn 1985, THE MANHATTANS, wanting to enhance their show by adding a female vocalist to the act, chose Regina Belle after being introduced to her by legendary New York dj Vaughn Harper. Spending two years touring with THE MANHATTANS, she appeared on the Bobby Womack-produced single, “Where Did We Go Wrong” (a duet with Gerald Alston). She also contributed to The Manhattans 1986 Columbia Records album, “Back To Basics”. A year later she was signed to the label as a solo artist.

GA: Two years ago in Kingston for the Startime Concert.

Unites as One Festival for 2024

(It was the biggest venue in the 29 year history of Startime, it was held in the National Arena. Gerald

Scheduled to take place on Memorial Day Weekend (May 26th - 29th), the 37th Atlanta Caribbean Carnival will bring together communities, artistes, and enthusiasts from across the Caribbean diaspora and beyond. This year's event marks a significant milestone as it presents a cohesive and united celebration, reflecting the strength and resilience of the Caribbean culture.

Organizers of the festival, the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival Bandleaders Association (ACCBA) have diligently worked to curate a diverse lineup of events, showcasing the dynamic rhythms, artistry, colourful costumes and captivating cultural elements that define Caribbean heritage. From pulsating Soca beats to mesmerizing steel pan melodies, the festival will offer a sensory journey into the heart of the West Indies.

After 16 years with Columbia Records, lead singer Gerald Alston took his turn as a solo artist with Motown Records; while Blue Lovett, due to doctor’s concerns regarding his health, decided to turn his attention towards producing and grooming new artists. The late 1980’s found THE MANHATTANS pursuing individual interests within the industry.

In 1993, all that changed. With their 30th anniversary approaching in 1994, it was the perfect time to reunite. So, along with new members Troy May and David Tyson, a reunion tour was born.

On February 25, 1999 THE MANHATTANS were inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.

In 2003, THE MANHATTANS released their first studio album in fifteen years featuring the beautiful ballad “Turn Out The Stars” which became one of the year’s best songs. On December 9, 2014 Winfred “Blue” Lovett passed away.

On August 15, 2018, THE MANHATTANS will celebrate their 56th anniversary.

In addition, to the official downtown Atlanta Caribbean Carnival parade route featuring full street closure on May 25th as well as a relocated stage in the parking lot of the festival village (Westside Park) for the post-parade concert extravaganza, the festival season will also include the beloved Children’s Carnival on May 11th, the ACCBA J’ouvert which returns as a nighttime affair on May 24th and ‘Submerged’ a new cooler fete experience on May 26th.

On The Love & Harmony Reggar cruise 2019, RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Gerald Alston of The Manhattans. He’s a classy and an extremely humble human being. It was truly a pleasure meeting this great singer.

Regarding the citizens of Atlanta and surrounding cities getting to enjoy one Carnival experience for the first time in years, ACCBA President Patricia Tonge Edigin shared, “We are thrilled to announce the return of the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival as a unified festival for 2024. This year's event embodies the spirit of togetherness and celebrates the rich tapestry of Caribbean culture. They invite everyone to join in for a fantastic, safe and memorable time.”

Aries will sparkle thanks to new energy in April. With the arrival of spring, you will feel a high dose of motivation to exercise, and thanks to your strong will, which you will definitely not lack during this period, you will feel great changes in a moment.

April will bring a lot of energy to Taurus. This spring month will be mostly focused on relationships. Deep contemplation and reflection of things will not be on the agenda. You will be more spontaneous, so do not be afraid to take full advantage of every opportunity, but a certain amount of prudence would be appropriate.

April will be a wild month. Gemini’s moods will change like on a roller coaster, and the need to always have the last word will strengthen. However, this approach can drive away your friends, and they will want to keep their distance from you.

April awakens strong emotions in Cancer, which this sign will not be able to control at the beginning. You can expect an uncontrolled outburst of emotions that can cause significant problems in both personal and professional life. Your behaviour will be mostly impulsive, so during this period, try to focus on inner peace and try to think things through before you say something.

April awakens in Leo sexual energy and unbridled appetite. All the topics that were taboo for you will now open up, and you will start to discover new areas of sexuality. Plan a whole weekend with your partner just for yourselves so that you can enjoy intimate moments without disturbing the tranquillity.

In April, Virgo will feel the need for tenderness and love. You will literally crave a hug from someone close, and you will not be able to get enough physical contact. But during this period, you will start to cling to many things and want everything right away, which will keep you in constant tension.

April will bring Libra a significant improvement in communication skills. You will use it the most in your work, where you will finally gather courage, stand out from the crowd and dictate your conditions.

April will bring Scorpios some emotional instability and an excess of energy. Your moods will be changing, and even minor things might throw you off balance. Therefore, it is advisable that you learn how to work with your emotions because otherwise, your changing moods could discourage your friends and family from spending time with you.

In April, Sagittarians will be in tune with their parental instincts, which will be quite strong this month. So if you have children then take them on a trip maybe to some waterpark or a similar place and let your partner enjoy some free time, maybe he can go out with his friends.

April will bring strong motivation to work and a desire for high earnings to Capricorns. You will be able to put a maximum of your energy to work, so that you will spend days and nights there. Even though at the beginning it will look like your body is dealing with it well, the tiredness will hit you later, and you might experience migraines and back pain, so do not work that much and give yourself enough rest.

Aquarians will not stop at all in April because they will become go-getters, and they will be very determined and even harsh when following their goals. You will be doing better than your boss would expect, and he/she will be amazed by your achievements. Your self-esteem will grow, and you will become a centre of attention.

April will be the month when Pisces will feel a desire for knowledge and studying. Your memory will be able to absorb an incredible amount of information; even you will be surprised by that. So you have a unique chance to start studying something that you have been thinking about for quite some time because now it is a time to overcome challenges.
