BRIAN WILSON

Beach Boys founder and Legendary Song Writer, Died at 82

Brian Douglas Wilson was born June 20th, 1942 in Inglewood, California. Brian was a natural born musician with an incredible ear for tone and pitch. Even as a toddler he would be able to match and mimic melodies and beats to songs after only hearing them a few times. His father was a big influence on his musical talents, pushing him to take accordion lessons, perform in church choir and teach himself piano, write his own songs and music and a friend of his father’s taught him how to draft manuscript music all before High School. .

In 1961, along with his two brothers, Dennis and Carl, his Cousin Mike Love and school friend Al Jardine formed the band called the Pendletones which would later become the The Beach Boys after the incredible success of their first song written by Mike Love and Brian Wilson, “Surfin’.”

The song became an instant hit in the California area and reached 75 on the National Billboards. The producer of the record was Hite and Dorinda Morgan on Candix Records and they changed the name immediately to The Beach Boys.

Soon after the record label went under and they had Capitol Records produce a double single for "409" and "Surfin' Safari" which also became an instant success. Over the next several year Wilson went on to release several mega hits with his group, including: “Surfin’ U.S.A,” “Surf City,” “Surfer Girl,” and “Little Deuce Coupe.” In 1964, “I Get Around,” became their first U.S. number one song.

Later that same year Brian took a small step

back from touring and became more reclusive, due to mental issues and psychological breakdowns that would go on to plague him for most of his life. It was during this time away from the band that he created their most esteemed album Pet Sounds which included hits like "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Sloop John B," "God Only Knows," and "Caroline, No." He also created their next huge single “Good Vibrations,” during this same time in reclusion.

Even while facing his own demons with drugs and mental illness, this genius musician and songwriter managed to create award winning music. The Beach Boys were nominated for 9 Grammy’s and won 2 of them, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a band and many of the members individually. They are also in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, UK Music Hall of Fame; and personally Brian was given a Kennedy Center Honors Medal, MusiCares Person of the Year Award and American Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award.

To say that Brian Wilson was an industry icon would be an understatement, with over 100 million records sold worldwide and Dozens of major accolades around the world, he personally brought the Beach Boys to incredible levels of greatness with his musical talent and song-writing genius.

Brian Wilson died at the age of 82 on June 11th, 2025 due to complications from his long standing battle with Lung Disease. Brian Wilson was a legend who created the music that has been the soundtrack to every boy’s beach trip for the last six decades. He truly is The Beach Boy. Brian you will be missed but never forgotten, you will live on with honor in the lyrics of your music for the rest of time. You will be missed dearly by your hundreds of millions of fans and your family and friends.

Rest in Peace good sir.

SLY STONE

Revolutionary of Funk and Soul, died at 82

Born as Sylvester Stewart on March 15th, 1943 in Denton, TX; Sly Stone, a musical prodigy was destined to overturn the music world and mold it to his own vision. Sly was best known for being the man who revolutionized modern Funk and Soul Music in the 1960s and 70s. It has been stated that “James Brown may have invented funk, but Sly Stone perfected it.” And Crawdaddy magazine credited him as being the founder of the progressive soul movement. And as for hit songs, I would be willing to bet that every reader has heard at least three of them while they were growing up.

Sly Stone was a musical prodigy, attaining proficiency at Keyboards, guitar, bass and drums all between the ages of seven and eleven. It helped that he grew up in a musical family and had a band with his siblings called the “Stewart Four” which released a gospel single in 1956, "On the Battlefield" b/w "Walking in Jesus' Name." In the mid 1960’s Sly (the nickname came from 5th grade when a classmate misspelled his name as “Slyvester” and it just stuck),

got a job as a Disc Jockey for the San Francisco, California, soul radio station KSOL. He also worked as a staff record producer for Autumn Records. These two jobs helped him develop his eclectic taste and style for music and also molded his mind about how a music group should be run and formed. This is how Sly and the Family Stone came to be. He merged his favorite genres, Funk, Soul and Acid Rock and created his own sound that became an anthem for the 60s and 70s. He had freedom, politics and togetherness merged together with hatred and anger towards government, war and racism. He believed everyone should just be able to be happy however they wanted and he ran his group as a utopian community that welcomed all races and treated everyone completely equal. In a time of significant racial divide and segregation it was a sight to behold seeing a band with Black, White and Latino members all singing the same harmony. He also believed that all members should get an equal cut of the pay they earned. This format inspired many other famous groups including, Wu Tang Clan,

Prince’s Revolution, and Afrika Bambaata’s Zulu Nation. Sly and the Family Stones had some incredibly huge hits in their career. Some of the biggest songs that you have heard are: “Everybody Is a Star,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “If It Were Left Up to Me,” “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” “M’Lady,” “Stand!,” “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” and a famous slowed down version of the Doris Day hit “Que Sera Sera” with this version becoming the ending theme song for the 1989 movie Heathers. I challenge any reader to listen to these songs and not remember these icons from their childhood, or from somewhere in pop culture today. These songs and lyrics are iconic. Continued on page 14

Continued from page 13

And the Sly and the Family Stones was recognized as true icons in the industry; In 2010, they were ranked 43rd in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and three of their albums are included on the most recent version of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Sly was known for being a wild and crazy guy, even getting married live of stage in 1974 during a concert at Madison Square Garden, however that all ended abruptly soon after. He became a recluse and someone, like many in the industry, who ravaged his own life with illicit substances. It got so bad that he didn’t even show up to some of his own concerts. He made a few appearances in the early 2000’s but they were not his best moments, at a tribute to his band during the 2006 Grammy’s he abruptly exited the stage in the middle of a set, and did the same thing during a concert in 2008 when he walked off stage after 20 minutes saying he had to piss and would be right back, but never returned to that show. However he did appear for a few fan conventions and interviews under better circumstances and even released one single in 2023 titled "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town (2023 Mix)"

Later in life he was diagnosed with severe Lung Disease. And as a result he died at home on June 9th, 2025 at the age of 82. Sly Stone may be gone but he will never be forgotten. He perfected the ideal music group format, he revolutionized, Funk and Soul Music and he created music that brought smiles and passion and spirit to hundreds of millions of people over the years. You will never be forgotten and your music will live on in the hearts, minds and souls of all of your fans forever. Rest in Peace, Sly.

Instructions:

Step 1

For the chicken: Heat a large skillet over medium heat

Step 2

Season the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the flour to a shallow bowl. Whisk together the milk and eggs in a second bowl. Mix the panko and everything bagel seasoning in a third bowl.

Step 3

Bread the chicken by dredging each cutlet first in the flour, shaking off the excess. Next, dip into the egg wash, then cover in the seasoned panko.

Step 4

Add the butter and oil to the skillet. When the butter is melted, add the chicken and cook until golden and crisp (or registering 165 degrees F), 4 to 5 minutes per side. Remove to a rack to rest.

Step 5

For the easy lemon dressing: While the chicken is cooking, add the olive oil, mustard, honey, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste to a mason jar and shake to combine.

Step 6

For the salad: Pour the dressing over the mixed greens in a bowl and toss. Add the greens to a platter, pile the chicken on top and garnish with the tomatoes and lemons. (Alternatively, add the undressed greens to a platter, drizzle on some of the dressing, pile the chicken on top, garnish with the tomatoes and lemons and serve with additional dressing on the side.)

Enjoy!

In July, Aries will become charismatic leaders who will stand out from the crowd at literally every social event. You will sparkle with self-confidence and positive energy, and everyone around you will perceive you as their role model, and they will feel comfortable in your presence.

July will be a harmonious month for Taurus when you will get completely comfortable, and you will enjoy every moment that this month will bring you. Empathy will awaken in you, and you will become a support for your loved ones. At the same time, you will be full of energy, so do not be afraid to use it to the fullest.

In July, Gemini can expect big life changes in their personal lives and their career. This summer month will give you a lot of confidence, thanks to which you will shine with positive energy, and you will become very attractive to many new suitors. During this period, however, your fateful love may appear among these suitors, so perceive every moment and enjoy being present.

July will bring Cancer a big dose of physical and mental strength, which they will be able to use in several areas of their lives. You will excel in sports activities, and you’ll become a good buddy for sports holidays. You will also be very dexterous, which will come in handy in your household, and your partner will certainly appreciate your initiative at home.

In July, Leo will calm down and let life flow. You will realise that you don't have to control everything and that it's good just to be led and enjoy the present moment. During this period, you will also be very empathetic, thanks to which your loved ones will look for your company and come to you for advice.

July will boost Virgo’s self-confidence. This month you will be so confident that you will be convinced that you do your best in everything, but with this approach you can come across very quickly. However, if you learn to control it so as not to harm anyone, you can get the most out of it.

In July, Libra will have a nice rest. You will succeed at work without much effort so that you will have more energy and time for leisure activities. You will finally meet friends you have not seen for a long time and deepen your relationship again.

In July, a lot of big changes will come to the lives of Scorpios. You will feel like a completely new person who needs to update his present lifestyle. That will be connected with a better physical condition because you might start doing exercise and eat better as well.

July will be a successful month for Sagittarians in terms of their career. You will come up with new ideas, which will amaze your boss and colleagues and thanks to your hard work and endurance you might even reach a promotion. So follow your goals and do not let anyone discourage you; now is the time when you have the biggest chance to reach success.

In July, troubles from the past will come to the surface, and they will need to be sorted out for good. The troubles will be about a conflict in your family that you consider to be solved. Do not look at it negatively, and try to take it as a challenge to straighten your family relationships. Everything can be communicated, but it is necessary to be open to it.

July will set a lot of challenges for Aquarians, and they will be able to use their indomitable energy, which they will be full of this month. Sports will give you your drive this month, which will positively effect your mood and your physical condition. You will be quite restless, and you will spend most of your free time on some sports trips or activities with your family and friends.

In July, Pisces will not recognise themselves due to their impulsive reactions, which will be supported by the planetary positions this month. You should be careful and try not to say anything that you might regret later. Try to avoid situations that involve some sharp exchange of opinions. Rather spend a lot of time alone and dedicate your time to some creative activities.
