POPE FRANCIS

“The People’s Pope” Died on Easter Monday, April 21st, 2025 at 88

Pope Francis was born under the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17th , 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Italian parents. He chose his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. He was known throughout his tenure as “The People’s Pope,” because he was much more in tune with the common people than many previous Popes. He was a man who stood for rights and equality for all. He had the utmost concerns for the poor, migrants and refugees around the world and he was someone who lived with the utmost humility and to that extent he refused to accept the opulence that the Catholic Church and the Vatican offered him and preferred to live like the common people because he felt that a man of God should live as the people do. He was the first Pope in 120 years to not live in the Apostolic Palace and instead chose to live in the Santa Marta guesthouse within Vatican City. He also only wore his Papal Robes during ceremony and preferred to wear more common basic robes and slacks. He also refused to wear the bright White or Red shoes and instead opted for more modest black shoes.

VAL KILMER

Batman and Top Gun Actor Died at 65

Val Edward Kilmer was born on December 31st , 1959, in Los Angeles, CA. He died unexpectedly on April 1st, 2025 due to complications from Pneumonia. The tragedy was extremely sad and unfortunate especially after this incredible leading actor survived a throat cancer diagnosis eleven years prior. Val is best known for his iconic roles of Batman in Batman Forever, Iceman in Top Gun, and as the lead in The Saint.

Val Kilmer went to high school and later to the Juilliard School's Drama Division with famed actor Kevin Spacey. At the time Kilmer was the youngest person to be accepted to the Julliard Drama Division. Because of his theater education his earliest roles were stage performances, beginning in 1983 with a role in The Slab Boys, off Broadway, which he acted alongside Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn. His first TV role was in the form of an after school public service special called One Too Many where he co-starred with Michelle Pfeiffer in a PSA about drinking and driving.

The first big break came in 1984 where he was cast as the lead for the musical comedy Top Secret! Where Kilmer played a rock and roll star who was also a spy; interestingly, Val sang all of the songs for real and later released an record album under the name of the character, Nick Rivers. And soon after he was cast as the iconic wingman for Maverick, Iceman, in the epic film Top Gun. Top Gun was the first film Kilmer had a co-starring role in that became a major blockbuster success and interesting but sad fact, his reprisal of the role in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick would be his last appearance on the big screen. All in all, over his career Kilmer had roles in over 80 movies and 8 television shows. He was a chameleon of sorts and able to step into roles of every genre, he appeared in comedies, dramas, action

adventures, westerns, historical films, crime dramas, science fiction films, and fantasy films. He was so talented at jumping into any role given that in 1992 Roger Ebert stated, "If there is an award for the most unsung leading man of his generation, Kilmer should get it". Continued 0n page 14

After 16 years with Columbia Records, lead singer Gerald Alston took his turn as a solo artist with Motown Records; while Blue Lovett, due to doctor’s concerns regarding his health, decided to turn his attention towards producing and grooming new artists. Instructions:

Step 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the linguine and cook as the label directs. Reserve 1 cup cooking water, then drain.

Step 2

Meanwhile, season the shrimp with salt. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and cook until the garlic is just golden, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring occasionally, until pink and just cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Remove the shrimp to a plate. Add the wine and lemon juice to the skillet and simmer until slightly reduced, 2 minutes.

Step 3

Return the shrimp and any juices from the plate to the skillet along with the linguine, butter and 1/2 cup of the reserved cooking water. Continue to cook, tossing, until the butter is melted and the shrimp is hot, about 2 minutes, adding more of the reserved cooking water as needed. Season with salt; stir in the parsley. Serve with lemon wedges.

Enjoy!
