HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Doug & Max HausuMountain @gmail.com 847-220-1755

IN HONOR OF HER NEW RECORD IRISIRI ALL HAUSMO EARTHEATER RELEASES ARE ON SALE! EVERYTHING 20% OFF!

“Her acclaimed 2015 records RIP Chrysalis and Metalepsis offered an extension of [her vocal physicality], weaving her voice around alien technology. In the wake of those records, she’s vaulted from critically beloved experimentalist into a stalwart of the international underground.” - VICE Noisey “Eartheater, a.k.a. Alexandra Drewchin, makes psychedelic music that’s at once familiar and mutated. On a pair of albums released last year — Metalepsis and RIP Chrysalis — Drewchin, with a penchant for pop subversion and vocal alterations, found folk music in synths and harsh noise, and vice versa.” - NPR

“Alexandra Drewchin simply got psychedelic music better than anyone this year on RIP Chrysalis. Rather than offering easy hooks, it’s the kind of album you gradually sink into, like a dream or an acid trip. Once you’re under that spell, anything and everything can happen across these 10 sci-fi spirituals. Field recordings, hip-hop beats, classical arrangements, choral chants, kosmische and surreal poetry are all flattened out in a sort of everythingis-equal grandeur, yet in the midst of all its complexity, Drewchin sits at the center with zen focus, guiding us to the other side with warmth and grace.” - FACT Magazine #10 album of 2015 “One of the reasons Chrysalis is so fascinating and absorbing is because Drewchin obliterates the notion of song structure, starting from something as time-honored as folk, but bashing down the walls and ceiling around it to create music that feels mystical and searching.” - Pitchfork

RIP Chrysalis

LP - $16.99, CD - $11.99, CS - $7.99 “...bizarre assemblages of electric guitar and synthesizer samples that

bleed and swirl into one another with the boundless energy of psychedelia, at once feeling like ancient rite and unabated innovation.” - SPIN “She’s upending the conventions of folk and ambient music—taking little excursions into harsher realms, just for good measure—gracefully crossing stereotypical divides between genres without even really letting you notice that she’s done so. It’s a sort of sonic jamais vu: All of the ingredients feel familiar, but the whole that they eventually make up remains alien and unattainable.” - Pitchfork

HAUSMO38 / Released OCT 15

“...with her debut for Hausu Mountain, Drewchin traces a sonic spell of post-internet consciousness-phasing with deeply earworming android folk and tesserect loops that makes all the right connections.” - Tiny Mix Tapes “Drewchin weaves together pitter-patter percussion, exquisite guitar work, and a humming reverberation that sounds like CD - $11.99, CS - $7.99 it’s coming from a supercomputer booting HAUSMO25 / Released FEB 15 up.” - Chicago Reader

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE THANK YOU FOR TODAY

STREET DATE: AUGUST 17, 2018 Thank You for Today is the sound of Death Cab for Cutie both expanding and refining; a band twenty years into its evolution, still uncovering new curves in its signatures, new sonic corners to explore. The Seattle band’s ninth studio album, recorded in Los Angeles with producer Rich Costey in late 2017 and early 2018, stands alongside classic Death Cab for Cutie albums including their 1998 debut Something About Airplanes and 2003’s masterful Transatlanticism as a definitive collection — ten tracks that are by turns beautiful and dynamic and darkly anthemic and bittersweet. “I realized early on in the process that I wanted to write a record that is very much who we are,” says singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard. “I wanted to go more inward, and create something more personal.” On songs such as the kinetic “Gold Rush,” “Northern Lights” and “You Moved Away,” Gibbard ruminates on the flux going on in his hometown, and weaves a thread throughout the album about how interconnected geography is with memory, and how hard it can be to hold onto places, and to people, too.

Thank You for Today was produced and mixed by Rich Costey (Fiona Apple, Franz Ferdinand, Muse), who also produced the band’s last album the Grammy nominated Kintsugi. Thank You for Today marks the first Death Cab for Cutie release to see long time bandmates Gibbard, Nick Harmer, and Jason McGerr joined in the studio by new members Dave Depper (Menomena, Fruit Bats, Corin Tucker, Ray Lamontagne) and Zac Rae (My Brightest Diamond, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Gnarls Barkley). Depper and Rae have both been part of Death Cab’s touring band since 2015.

Death Cab for Cutie will celebrate their new album with a much anticipated fall tour. The dates will see the 8x Grammy Award-nominated band playing intimate venues and theatres across North America.

THE RHUMB LINE (DELUXE EDITION) bark177 / 2xLP+MP3

STREET DATE: AUGUST 17, 2018 Barsuk Records is proud to announce a 10th Anniversary reissue of Ra Ra Riot’s debut album The Rhumb Line on August 17, 2018. Originally released on August 19, 2008, The Rhumb Line was hailed as “a blissful chamber-pop breakthrough” in a 4-star Rolling Stone review (who included it in their top 40 albums of the year) and praised by Time Out New York as “classically pretty, but without getting all fussy about it.” The album peaked at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, where it remained for 12 weeks. “This has been a fun opportunity for us to consider how long we’ve been making music together, and how lucky we are because of that. We never want to take anything for granted, and we’re so excited to revisit this record – which is still really meaningful to us – and share it again with the world,” said bassist Mathieu Santos. Vocalist Wes Miles added these details about the reissue itself: “It’s beautifully redesigned by our own Milo Bonacci with a second disc of unreleased gems, live tracks and demos. It’s a real alternate universe Rhumb Line double LP.”

In the poignant liner notes for the reissue, Santos notes, “The Rhumb Line, like most debuts, is the sound of the band becoming. Along with producer Ryan Hadlock, engineer Matt Doctor and our drummer Cameron Wisch, we spent a total of six weeks living in the studio’s converted barn and trying, somehow, to compress two years into ten songs. Naturally, the specter of John [Pike]’s absence permeated every last moment of the sessions, but once we had decided to see the album through – to celebrate the songs we had developed together, to honor the dreams we had all shared – the burden, however slightly, first began to subside. For a moment, there was no baggage, no despair, no expectations – there were just some kids in the woods making music.” This 10th anniversary reissue includes the original album plus 11 additional live and demo tracks, 9 of which are previously unreleased. This August, the band will play The Rhumb Line in its entirety at five special shows: THE RHUMB LINE 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Aug Aug Aug Aug Aug

JEREMY & THE HARLEQUINS REMEMBER THIS WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 17, 2018 Remember This is the follow up to Jeremy & The Harlequins’ 2016 release and Yep Roc Records label debut, Into the Night. The new material comes with a shift in direction due to the fact that Jeremy & The Harlequins – completed by guitarists Craig Bon and Patrick Meyer, bassist Bobby Ever and Jeremy’s brother Stevie Fury on drums – are a band who have never stopped moving or creating. Recorded in LA with producer Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Lord Huron, Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts) in the historic Beachwood Canyon and Boyle Heights, Remember This offers a widescreen vision of America that focuses on the urgency of the present moment but which also retains the band’s magical, romantic vision of and reverence for the past.

File under: Indie, Americana, Folk. Eponymous debut album from London trio Jessica’s Brother, comprised of songwriter Tom Charleston, Jonny Helm (The Wave Pictures) and Charlie Higgs (Ramshackle Union Band). Channelling the spirit of the Brothers Grimm to create an otherworldly atmosphere, they weave their influences together making a rich and eclectic vision, with nods to Silver Jews, Jason Molina, Nick Cave, Richard Thompson and Neil Young. There are themes of joy, anger and silliness in a carefully crafted world with a colourful cast of characters. The trio formed in October 2016 and just nine months later they recorded the album with Laurie Sherman with input from Darren Hayman. A few other friends joined them including Dan Mayfield (Enderby’s Room), who added a dose of Bad Seeds/Dirty Three vibes on the violin and Paul Rains (Allo Darlin’/Tigercats) on guitar. Tom Charleston’s songwriting is influenced more by poets than other musicians, he cites John Ashbery, T.S. Eliot and Philip Larkin as inspirations. Ten startling individual vignettes tell their own stories from a variety of narrator’s points of view. “One Of The Guys”, about the toxic nature of being one of the guys in a predatory pack. “Overnight Horror” revolves around the macho-masculine nightmare where, as Charleston explains, “the world has gone head-over-heels shitward and the narrator is reduced to selling his daughter or his wife to stay alive.”All The Better”, is a hushed, eerie folk song exploring the melancholy and optimism of breaching adolescence and the limbo before adulthood. Weaving a variety of influences from jangly indie-rock to gothic country and contemplative psych folk, Jessica’s Brother create the sound of a band coming together and getting caught up in the rush of starting new and enjoyable. “Jessica’s Brother’s shambling nerdcore is clearly a passion project intended to please only themselves. Good for them…A jingling rush that would have headed John Peel’s Festive 50 in another life.” The Guardian // A1) Getting Obscene A2) All the Better A3) One of the Guys A4) Dylan A5) Humdinger B1) Overnight Horror B2) Come Around B3) Hare B4) Lulu Walls B5) Cold, White and Blue Day

180g vinyl. You Said Strange come from Normandy in France, although if it was up to them they’d come from the States, somewhere between Texas and Cali. They’ve been growing their own Norman-spiced-up definition of psychedelia for a few years now, making their way on a historically busy road. This is their debut full length, recorded in Portland with Peter Holmström of The Dandy Warhols after both bands toured together. Salvation Prayer is a condensation of heady riffs, haunting melodies and bright rhythms, half-way between 90s shoegaze and 60s psychedelia. The album touches on the theme of belief; may it be superficial, spiritual, superstitious, religious or moral. This very-human interpretation of reality is meant to help those who seek to free themselves, dream or flee, and that’s what the band is all about. 1) Salvation Rain 2) Power House 3) Brain 4) Get Out 5) Cold Crusader 6) Tilelli 7) Halo 8) Extend 9) Leave The Lord 10) Just Wait 11) The Way To The Holy Wa (Jesus)

DORIAN CONCEPT Nature of Imitation Street Date: 8/17/2018 BF075 | BFCD075

Dorian Concept releases Nature of Imitation via Brainfeeder as the label’s newest signing. Available on CD. LP is TBC. Following the release of “Joined Ends” in 2014 - a deeply intimate and textured project he describes as his “chamber music” record - Dorian Concept performed everywhere from Glastonbury to Sonar to MoMA PS1’s Warm Up and then deliberately took himself off the radar. The time since has been spent meticulously un-learning his prodigious production process and developing a brand new sound that even the most clued-up won’t be expecting - showcased on ‘Promises’, in the most prominent use of his voice to date. The recording and processing of his vocals represent not only a more human expression of his highly technical sound, but also an inclination toward recursion - the challenge, ephemerality, and demand for attention of “unequal repetition” which shapes the build and deconstruction of energy throughout the record.

Reissue of the long unavailable second album by highly acclaimed rapper OPEN MIKE EAGLE, soon to be seen hosting the Comedy Central tv show The New Negroes. Features several tracks that are amongst the most popular in his live set. In 2011 LA upstart rap label Hellfyre Club (Subsidiary of Alpha Pup) released OPEN MIKE EAGLE’S “Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes”. Widely considered an indie-rap watermark, the LA Times said of the album:” the Los Angeles-based Project Blowedian has carved out a singular niche. He’s analytical, sardonic, political, and he manages not to take himself seriously despite taking everything seriously.” From dark themes like morality and race relations, Mike managed to draw out some of his most imaginative and witty work. And with features like Rhymesayers Entertainment’s P.O.S. and art rap godfather MC Paul Barman, it was the release that put OPEN MIKE EAGLE into the national rap conversation. Music from it has been featured on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio show, and NPR’s WITS show.

Description:

The Myrrors Borderlands

Label: Beyond Beyond is Beyond Catalog Number: BBIBR049 LP / $18.99 / 857387005520

If you see The Myrrors as the dust-caked disciples of a specific strain of desertdrone mysticism, there’s little on “Borderlands”, their fourth full-length Myrrors album released in as many years, to dissuade you from that vision. Instead, there’s only confirmation—an intoxicating combination of outlook and output that clarifies and crystallizes the band’s many sonic strengths throughout the album’s fantastically unfolding forty-plus minutes. Often ominous in its ambience, “Borderlands” begins with an appropriately Albert Ayler-ish blast of “Awakening,” which serves as a short, slumbershattering introduction to “The Blood That Runs the Border.” Here, The Myrrors sound somewhat haunted and heartbroken, while nevertheless driven and determined. It’s a crestfallen crusade of sanguinary sound that spreads across the album as a whole, an impression powered in no small part by the echoes of dervishes danced by Sufi mystics in centuries-old efforts to open other borders, as it were. This dynamic dance of conflicting emotions finds its contours on tracks like the meditative “Biznagas” and the propulsive “Formaciones Rojas”, which, for all of their otherworldly-ness, wouldn’t be tremendously out of place if described as an outtake from Dylan’s “Desire,” recalling the genius of Scarlet Rivera’s contributions to that album. However, for sheer atomic mass, the beating heart of “Borderlands” must be the album’s final, twenty-one minute excursion to the center of the territory that The Myrrors seek to map—namely, “Note From the Underground,” a Dostoyevsky-referencing drone that wordlessly reflects on that book’s less-than-optimistic tone: “In any case, civilization has made mankind if not more blood-thirsty, at least more vilely, more loathsomely blood-thirsty … now, we do think bloodshed abominable and yet, we engage in this abomination, with more energy than ever. Which is worse? Decide that for yourselves.”

Decide for yourself what you want to see in The Myrrors.

CONNER YOUNGBLOOD Cheyenne

Street Date: 8/17/2018 COUNT147 | COUNTCD147 Conner Youngblood releases debut album Cheyenne on Counter Records. Available on LP with 12” gatefold sleeve with matte varnish, on 180g black vinyl and complete with a booklet. Also available on CD softpack with matte varnish and square booklet. After a number of critically acclaimed singles, Nashville-based multiinstrumentalist Conner Youngblood releases his debut album Cheyenne via Counter Records. Comprised of 13 tracks, the album is the culmination of two years of extensively seeing the world, resulting in a record that involves travel, but also the grounding aspects of the people Youngblood has encountered along the way. Whether it’s what Youngblood humbly puts down as “musical ADHD” or sheer talent — Cheyenne is the work of a musical polymath. Where most musicians are relatively happy with picking up a guitar and sailing away on a few chords, Youngblood can be found darting from one instrument to the next. Cheyenne features no less than 30 different instruments — a harp, a bass clarinet, a tabla, and more — all of which are played by Youngblood on a record featuring no guests.

Researched and curated by Diggin In The Carts writer / co-director Nick Dwyer and Hyperdub label head Kode9, the collection plunges deep into the rare archives of the chip era of Japanese video game music. Watch the full series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDdx2qJK6Byi1bM37D0u-44NzRa9SVD7M The music in this collection was made for globally renowned systems, from Famicom, Super Famicom and the PC-Engine through to popular Japanese home computer platforms like the MSX, MSXturboR and the PC-8801. ‘Diggin In The Carts’ showcases these works not just as “music for video games”, but as incredible pieces of electronically produced Japanese music that stand on their own. Some of the greatest art is created within limitations, and often the most pioneering and influential periods in electronic music have resulted from artists pushing existing technology to its limits. The 8-bit and 16-bit era of video game music in the 1980s and early 1990s saw composers squeezing the most technicolour array of sounds, tones and melodies from the limited chips and channels at their disposal. With every new system came a new sound chip, each with its own personality, and the Japanese games companies adopted all kinds of methods to give their games the sonic edge, from customizing their chips to boost the console's capabilities to composers developing bespoke computer programs to generate their own unique sound palette. From Soshi Hosoi’s Steve Reich inspired minimalist masterpiece ‘Mister Diviner’ from The Mahjong Touhaiden, to the dazzling high-tech chip soul of Toshiharu Yamanishi’s ‘Shooting Stars’ from legendary Mega Drive shooter Thunder Force IV, and not forgetting the saw tooth heavy darkness of the Konami Kukeiha Club on titles like ‘Mouryou Senki Madara’ and ‘Esper Dream II’, ‘Diggin In The Carts’ aims to bring the pleasure and depth of this music to an audience inside and outside the gaming world.

A BROKE MOON RISES music for four acoustic guitars by papa m That chill in your spine makes total sense. Papa M is back in the room, and like the animal you are, you sense it before you actually know he’s there. As the light from the broke moon floods in, you feel that you’ll survive — even if you’ll never be the same....

march of the opening track resonates with a spare drum beat, we are completely transfixed into the open spaces around the guitars: damn, son — it’s the M-scape!

Late 2016’s Highway Songs brought Papa M back to us, after many years of silence and several harrowing dances with death for his Id-ego/host body, David Pajo. Now, two years on down the road, we’re all here again to witness A Broke Moon Rises. Highway Songs was a necessarily cathartic experience in all phases. Afterwards, with no tour dates forthcoming (partially due to lousy clubs and their lack of wheelchair-accessible stage doors!), it felt good just to play for fun again, like being in the practice space instead of the psych ward — a much TRACK healthier change of pace than some might guess! David blew it out; all the different styles he’s played in over the years, from folk-blues to metal, electronic, pop, Bollywood... all of it. But when the spasms subsided, a back-to-roots sediment remained in the bottom of the bowl, which he read as a motive for a new Papa M album done with all acoustic instruments. That’s how there’s nothing electric about A Broke Moon Rises — why, even the drums are acoustic! Imagine.

LISTING

* The Upright Path * Walt’s * * A Lighthouse Reverie * Shimmers * * Spiegel im Spiegel *

The five songs of A Broke Moon Rises find David focusing his technique in unknown directions, to find out what he can do with them. When that happens, he finds himself on the very spot where Papa M music becomes alive! We call this, “the sweet spot.” As the quietly funereal LP

MORE MUSIC FROM PAPA M ON DRAG CITY

The record’s title is based upon his son’s observation of a halfmoon one evening (when his son was 29), and it helped infuse the record with an essential feeling, which draws to a decidedly tasty conclusion with David taking on an Arvo Pärt piece. After years of fascination with the music, listening in passivity, he finally decided to do something about understanding it by playing it himself. If you’re wondering, that’s the key to A Broke Moon Rises. Or, instead of us doing all the work for you, why not just listen for yourself instead! Jeezus, have you learned anything? You really will be mother’s worthless little nothing forever, won’t you? GO TO YOUR ROOM — and don’t forget to take your new Papa M album, you little cum-stain.

CD

LIVE FROM A SHARK CAGE DC170 2xLP

David’s been engineering and mixing his records for years, so the sensation of his soundthoughts doesn’t entirely surprise us, even in their latest, acoustic anointment. Layers of guitars curl and unfurl, falling away from the center with feathery softness. Slide figures cut through the progressions with a rusty glide. Arpeggiations flicker with light, leading into a change that’ll break on yer ear like a small revelation. Even the sound of Papa M playing in the room, leaning forward or untouching the strings, provides textural byplay in created space. A Broke Moon Rises is meditative in the most active sense, with the unquiet mind leaping from place to place in a static, spartan theater. All of which action makes hypnotic music, perfect for listening.

Traps PS

New Chants This is where the real spirit of that first wave of post-punk is at work on New Chants. It’s that uneasiness with the future and the unpredictable effects it brings, and an effort to make an unpredictable new music to meet it. (Possibly related: there’s actually one of the Jazzcats studio cats playing piano on this album, but not where you’d think.) New Chants is an album about watching and being watched, about white noise and negative space, about how what’s undone or unplayed or unsaid is just as deliberate and meaningful as everything else. Jeffords even perforated his lyrics sheet with “…” ellipses—negative space in the language itself. So think Wire’s precision minimalism, antidote to the over-the-top spectacle of punk and pop both. You’ll hear it in “Seven Voices” or the album’s title track. Think Public Image and that caustic, corrosive—and purer for it—dissonance. You’ll hear it in “Two Truths,” with its ragged semi-chorus of “Emmmmmmbrace …” Think the Contortions, who tore out everything in their songs except the rhythm and discovered there wasn’t much else they’d needed anyway, except for some saxophone used more as flamethrower than musical instrument. You’ll hear that as “Fourth Walls” falls in on itself. And then think about Traps PS, who thought about what they didn’t need and then threw it out, and who made an album only out of what they felt mattered most: “Let it be what it is,” says Jeffords. New Chants is barely twenty minutes long—but it’s got everything.

Traps PS are a band that breaks “less is more” all the way down to “less is everything.” You get it: like the Minutemen, the songs are short because they don’t need to be long. And like the Minutemen, sixty seconds of Traps PS hits harder and resonates longer than five-ten-twenty sloppy minutes from somebody else. Or like Gang of Four, who got it from James Brown, who is a fundamental Traps PS inspiration—Traps PS cares about discipline, rhythm and clarity. Says drummer Miles Wintner: “We don’t waste time.” They’ve always been unafraid to do what needed to be done, this practically telepathic trio of Wintner, bassist/backing vocalist Danny Miller and singer/guitarist Andrew Jeffords. They recorded and released records on their community-oriented/community-involved label Papermade and played any space they’d fit—lost all ages institutions like L.A.’s Pehrspace or not-exactly legal “guerilla” shows on city streets and in dusty Inglewood oil fields. But with their first full-length in three years coming into focus, they found L.A. independent label Innovative Leisure ready to amplify that DIY capability: “We’ve done so much in our own bubble that it was exciting to explore another aspect,” says Jeffords. “I’m enjoying inviting people into our family. By the time they walked into Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio—where labelmates like Hanni El Khatib and the Molochs recorded with producer Jonny Bell—they had more than twenty songs nearly fully finished, trimmed to their most necessary components and rehearsed only enough to sharpen the original inspiration. That was the most important part, says Jeffords, to capture that ecstatic lightning-strike instant that sparked a song in the first place, and to make sure it never fizzled out. “If we didn’t have that feeling,” he adds, “the song would have never made it out of the rehearsal studio.” Their last full-length was about energy, says Jeffords, an echo of the helicopters that shook the walls in his old apartment and the car crashes in the street. New Chants would be darker in tone and color, he thought—about people and their machines, and the blurring relationship between them. Like the way you can sometimes see your reflection in a TV screen—maybe you lose track of where the media starts and you begin. If “Fourth Walls” didn’t make it obvious, the black border around their cover art does: Traps PS knows there’s always a frame around the image.

"Many current bands look to 70s-era no wave and post-punk for influence, but Traps PS does so with a unique and hectic energy that sets them apart from their peers and that makes them seem like an update, rather than a retread." - LA Record "Evisceration is what Traps PS do best, as they sort through 60 years of wreckage from the ever-growing junkyard of rock & roll and reassemble the shards into angular, postpunk sculptures." - LA Weekly

“I suppose finding words and meaning to describe this release would be next to impossible. This recording was a real joy, to go back to our humble beginnings. To have the freedom to create art only for ourselves was truly sublime” — Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie of A Winged Victory For The Sullen Erased Tapes rounds off a jubilant year of tenth anniversary celebrations with a very special release, 1+1=X, a set of exclusive music from every artist on the label. Featuring never before heard tracks from Nils Frahm, Kiasmos and A Winged Victory For The Sullen, 1+1=X sees Erased Tapes artists come together to make an album as a collective. Sharing the same space, instruments and each others’ capabilities during a residency at Vox-Ton studio in Berlin, they recorded 20 songs to mark the label's 10-year history. Previously only available as a limited vinyl box set for Record Store Day, 1+1=X — produced by label curator Robert Raths — will be now be available as a 3-LP set on August 17th to accompany the 2CD box set and digital download to be released on 29th June 2018. “It was important to create something communal and reflective of our time, to capture something of value using traditional recording techniques, experimenting and reacting to each other in real time, sharing the same space,” says Raths. Between August 2016 and 2017, each artist arrived with a new composition or an improvisation to record at Vox-Ton. Run with much love and care by Italian engineer Francesco Donadello – who has worked on many Erased Tapes recordings before including A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Michael Price and Lubomyr Melnyk – it is one of the few studios left where it’s still possible to record fully analogue, isolated from the city noise and in a room that can fit a large ensemble. Reflective of the communal spirit, 1+1=X is the result of an ambitious undertaking; to create a singular record as a collective, not just a compilation of songs, that celebrates the benefits of community over individuality and improvisation over rigorous planning. “As much as Erased Tapes probably wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the digital age, we should also remind ourselves of what we are capable of without it,” adds Raths. “1+1=X is a testament of what can be achieved when we work together as a collective, which is more than the sum of what we can achieve as individuals.” The majority of songs on this album feature contributions from multiple performers, whether it’s Nils Frahm duetting on the keys with Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe, Kiasmos being joined by Högni and a string ensemble, Douglas Dare’s one-take ‘Darling’ featuring Rival Consoles on synths, Masayoshi Fujita on vibes and Raths himself controlling the tremolo on his voice. Peter Broderick’s ‘The Perpetual Glow’ meanwhile, brings in a full big band and choir where everyone present, including the studio staff, was invited to grab any instrument and join in. Every song has a unique story and approach – in-themoment decisions and little accidents that could only come out of these kinds of circumstances where people work together in the same space, sparking off each other and their environment. Even Rival Consoles’ remix of Daniel Brandt’s ‘Blackpool Sands Forever’ was conceived of in the studio kitchen during recording breaks. Japanese vocal performer Hatis Noit decided to bring a field recording of the ocean with her, which she had taken near the Fukushima power plant after participating in a memorial ceremony for the opening of the evacuation area. It is also no coincidence that the album opens with ‘Brutal Moderna’ by Qasim Naqvi (Dawn of Midi) and A Winged Victory For The Sullen’s ‘Long May It Sustain’, which were both recorded on the day the U.S. election results came in. “Qasim asked me to read the news headlines with a stutter over the top of his piece. It was an oddly beautiful experience which brought all of us together on a day when spirits were otherwise a bit low,” says Peter Broderick. “I thought this residency was a wonderful idea. In fact I would have loved to be there for more of it. I made some amazing new friends, some stronger bonds with old friends and some wonderful pieces of music that I’m honoured to be a part of. Robert has often described Erased Tapes as a family, and perhaps above all else this was just his earnest effort to bring the family together. I hope we’ll have some reunions in years to come!” Designed in collaboration with Torsten Posselt at FELD, album is accompanied by a book of photographs documenting the recording process. It is housed in a bespoke, hand-assembled white box.

Craven Faults Springhead Works PARCEL 369

Springhead Works is the second release by Craven Faults. Where have we been since the last time? The UFO Club, 1966. Runcorn via Stockholm a few years later. Progress. But at what cost? The Scottish Borders have been mentioned. The landscape is reminiscent of home. Rolling hills. Long hot summers. The smell of dusty 1/4” tape. Fairfield Halls, 1970. It’s all a little hazy. Ask a question, but don’t be surprised to get a question back in reply. When was the last time you listened without distraction? Do you remember how it feels to lose yourself completely? Each tiny variation becomes seismic. A lost cause? Perhaps. Netherfield Works is the debut release from Craven Faults. Two long form pieces for half-remembered journeys across post-industrial Yorkshire. Originally released in Europe in late 2017, it was supported by Four Tet, Demdike Stare, Dan Snaith, James Holden, Luke Abbott, Gold Panda, Graham Massey, Bill Kouligas, Not Waving, Resident Advisor, NTS and Beats In Space.

Rachael McShane & The Cartographers When All Is Still $14.99

Label: Topic Records Cat. No: TSCD596 Format: CD | Digital Barcode: 714822005968

FOR FANS OF : BELLOWHEAD, SHIRLEY COLLINS, ANNE BRIGGS, THE TRANSPORTS, TRADITIONAL BRITISH FOLK rachaelmcshane.co.uk www.topicrecords.co.uk

Brand new album (and her first for Topic Records) from former Bellowhead string player/singer, Rachael McShane sees her reworking traditional songs with a new band, The Cartographers plus ex-Bellowhead cohorts. ‘When All Is Still’ is destined to be among 2018’s most talked about best new British folk albums. Hailing from the North East of England, singer, cellist, fiddle and viola player Rachael McShane is perhaps best known as an original member of British folk bigband Bellowhead, who sold over a quarter of a million albums. That, however, may be about to change with the release of her own distinctive and captivating, brand new album ‘When All Is Still’ (Topic Records) on 10th August 2018. This, her first solo album since 2009’s ‘No Man’s Fool’ (Navigator Records) finds her innovatively interpreting traditional songs with an exciting new band, The Cartographers, featuring electric and acoustic guitarist Matthew Ord (Assembly Lane) and melodeon player Julian Sutton (Kathryn Tickell, Sting). Not that she’s completely left the Bellowhead world behind her, as amongst the featured special guests, there are former Bellowhead bandmates Paul Sartin (oboe), Andy Mellon (trumpet), Justin Thurgur (trombone) and Ed Neuhauser (tuba), in addition to a host of other outstanding musicians. As an original member of Bellowhead, Rachael McShane toured internationally, as well as making several high profile TV appearances. Bellowhead recorded 5 studio albums and won a total of 8 BBC Folk Awards in their 12 years together. She has more recently been singing the role of Susannah Holmes in a critically acclaimed adaptation of ‘The Transports’ alongside a stellar cast including The Young’uns, Faustus, Nancy Kerr & Greg Russell. Rachael McShane & The Cartographers are a brand new signing to Topic Records, the oldest independent label in the world, on the eve of its 80th anniversary (in 2019). Tracklisting : 1. The Molecatcher 2. Lady Isabel 3. Cropper Lads 4. Ploughman Lads 5. Waltzing at Giggleswick / The Ginger Cat Monster 6. Two Sisters 7. Barley and Rye 8. Road to Tarset / Lake of Swans 9. DJRUM - PORTRAIT WITH FIREWOOD

'Portrait With Firewood' is Djrum’s (Felix Manuel) most personal body of work to date, the product of an emotionally turbulent 2017, capturing the range of feelings and emotions he went through in vivid sonic beauty. By putting aside his previous sampladelic approach he returned to his childhood instrument of the piano as a core starting point. Felix is classically trained in the jazz tradition and influenced by the likes of Keith Jarrett and Alice Coltrane. Previously he was shy at the prospect of fans hearing his piano playing, but determined to overcome this fear he has brought forward a new honesty to his work. He collaborated with cellist Zosia Jagodzinska and vocalist Lola Empire, both artists contributions are seeded throughout the album.  08/17/2018 RS1810 DOUBLE VINYL LP $24.99 5055274708782 For fans of Martyn, Skee Mask, Lone, Burial facebook.com/DjrumMusic facebook.com/randsrecords

This new production approach expanded to experimentation with field recording, contact micing his beloved piano and purchasing his first hardware synth, all in service of enriching the personal, humane quality of the record. "Music helps me to communicate the sorts of things that I find almost impossible to put in to words. I think the process for this album has helped me create a more rich and emotionally complex body of work than I have managed before.”

PAUL FRICK - SECOND YARD BOTANICALS

Apollo Records are proud to welcome Paul Frick to the fold. Frick is a Berlin-born music composer primarily known as one part of the group Brandt Brauer Frick. 'Second Yard Botanicals' is his debut album. Exploring a vast number of instruments, field recording and deconstructed breakbeats woven with undulating filters and gossamer melodies, the album sees Frick drawing on the world around him in a free associative style. 'Second Yard Botanicals‘ at its core is based on sonic collage, from a genre point of view it's highly eclectic, remotely echoing Frick's classical composition background as well as his hip hop / trip hop past.

08/17/2018 AMB1807 SINGLE VINYL LP $21.99 5055274708720 For fans of Brandt Brauer Frick, Four Tet facebook.com/ApolloRecs

Besides the actual recording of instruments like piano, guitar and percussion, Frick sampled heavily from his twenty year deep sonic archive of performances and field recordings. Recorded in the band's shared studio space in Neukölln he was surrounded by a bunch of other musicians and artists in who shared their ideas, parts of their lives and often their equipment. These musicians and others feature heavily on the record, incorporating a laundry list of sumptuous sounds, including vocals, cello, harp, violin, bass clarinet, tuba and bass flute alongside the more expected drum machines and synths.

OVERVIEW: At first, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes Our Girl so special, or why the Brighton-formed, London-based trio’s music stands out within a busy crowd of fellow guitar-wielding-types. But if an explanation didn’t jump out when they first emerged with a debut EP of mighty fuzz-soaked songs in November 2016, it surfaces with ‘Stranger Today’, a debut album of personal, emotional juggernauts that could have only been made by these three people: Guitarist / vocalist Soph Nathan, bassist Josh Tyler and drummer Lauren Wilson. To record the album, they stayed in Eve Studios in Stockport for a week, recording with Bill Ryder-Jones (The Coral, Domino). Their week in Stockport became a crucial catalyst for what would follow. Ryder-Jones is a guitar virtuoso himself (“He did stuff neither me or Soph had ever seen anyone do before,” Tyler remarks), and he became an unofficial fourth member of the group. ‘Stranger Today’ is a special debut for several reasons: First, because it’s the sound of a band beginning to grasp their own value and place in the world. Secondly, because you can hear the trio’s hunger to finally get in the same room and put to tape years’ worth of scrapbooks, half-finished ideas, and a slowly-forming feel for how their first album would actually sound. “What band isn’t itching to make their debut? But it’s quite frightening, knowing you’re about to do it,” Wilson remembers. The real clincher, however, is Our Girl’s dynamic, and how it plays out across ‘Stranger Today’. Best friends in person, the trio share the same close kinship and chemistry on record. On one side is Nathan’s visceral lyricism, which has a habit of detailing and chipping away at precise moments; the first heart-flutter of a new crush; the moment a long-term friendship begins to ebb away. Around her, Tyler and Wilson’s rhythm section carefully mirrors each feeling Nathan conveys. When she sings pointedly about love (‘I Really Like It’), she’s backed by a major-key afterglow. When the subject turns on its head (‘Josephine’), out steps a wall of taut, earth-shaking noise. They each “serve the song,” in Wilson’s words, moving in sync but with their own personal slant. Not least on the closer ‘Boring’, where all restraint is thrown aside and the trio let out one final, violent thrash. They inhabit a space bigger than the first loves, sleepless nights and growing pains that define this record. The Vryll Society

OVERVIEW: One thing The Vryll Society aren’t short of is admirers, lauded at just about every turn by press and public alike, the release of their debut LP for Deltasonic Records is hotly anticipated thanks to the promise this band have shown through their live sets and recent single releases. Discovered and nurtured by the late and much missed Deltasonic founder Alan Wills, they fitted the type for him perfectly. He instantly saw in them similar attributes he’d previously found in the early days of The Coral and The Zutons. The confident swagger, the solid union formed by their band-of-brothers gang mentality, their willingness to stand outside the conventional and often stifling jangly Liverpool scene, and the work ethic. Always the work ethic. Drawing from an eclectic palette of influence from deep funk to Krautrock, electronica and prog, they’ve created a heady, intoxicating, pin sharp, and tightly wound mellifluous groove, washed over with cyclical motifs, acres of effects laden guitar hooks, and shimmering, textural technicolour soundscapes. It is at once blissful, dizzying and madly infectious.

'Dream Voyager', taken from composer and film-maker Anthony Tombling Jr’s recent CUTS EP 'EXIST 1', gets the remix treatment. The original’s electric hum, pounding drums and indistinct vocals are reassembled by shoegaze heavyweights Slowdive and Village Green labelmate Ben Chatwin. The former remould the tune in their image by adding a pulsating heartbeat and swathes of atmospheric guitar while on the flip, Chatwin transforms the tune almost beyond recognition, decked with cascading analogue synths and muscular distorted percussion. "Dream Voyager is completely influenced

my experiences with sleep paralysis vby– feeling conscious but locked in your

dream world whilst it takes place around you in your paralysed state. It’s like you become a witness to your own dream. You enter another reality and that can be quite terrifying. It’s a portal of confusion where the narrative is blurred. You become the voyager – the dream voyager. I’m delighted Slowdive and Ben Chatwin have reinterpreted it. They have both taken my original and put their stamp on it.” Anthony Tombling, Jr, CUTS

File under: Modern Classical/Electronic Village Green’s Record Store Day release for 2018 sees three of the label’s artists come together for a special, exclusive vinyl release ‘Commune’. This limited release contains three brand new pieces, written for Record Store Day and released on a double-sided 12-inch vinyl, representing a taster of new material to come from all three artists. Angèle David-Guillou, fresh off the back of October’s ‘En Mouvement’ and its accompanying ‘Mouvements Organiques’, released in February, develops her compositional skills with ‘The Valley Of Detachment’ – a potent and formidable study in writing for the saxophone family.

Export: North America, Aus/NZ Dead Light’s ‘Spiral Down Dears’ continues with the rich warmth of their debut album. Their distinctive, nostalgic sound, created using analogue tape recorders, closely microphoned instrumentation and a handmade approach to effects and synthesis is as affecting here as ever, building slowly to an emotional climax. Lastly, Snow Palms, aka David Sheppard, transforms labelmate Matt Dunkley’s ‘Cycle 12’ from orchestral grandeur into a multi-layered, highly evocative exercise in synths andmallets, using chopped-up vocal samples and lush electronics along the way.

Fuzz, fuzz, fuzz, doom, stoner, more fuzz. Blacklab describe themselves as ‘the Dark Witch Doom Duo from Osaka Japan’. Chilling cool with built in overdrive. Yuko and Chia are immersed in the Japanese stoner doom scene, and it’s no surprise that with this first offering, they’ve pulled out a calling card that is as ‘in yer face’ and arresting as anything out there. A full frontal assault of distorted riffs, howls and ghostly vocals, as well as bags of riot girrl attitude and lo-fi bravado. But grunge they are not, and neither are they ‘occult rock’ as such. Being nominally a ‘Doom’ band, expect a bucket load of Sabbath worship for sure, but Blacklab have a vibe and experimental undertow akin to Boris and the souped up lo-fi fuzz of Ty Segall or Comets On Fire. Tracks like ‘Black Moon’ ‘Hidden Garden’ ‘Spoon’ ‘Symptom Of The Blacklab’ twist, burn and boil into the red. ‘His Name Is …’ is a churning chunky throb. ‘Spoon’ and ‘Warm Death’ offer moments of relief and crushing noise. And ‘Big Muff’ is … well … 9 minutes of drum-less fuzz, that will probably do serious damage to your speakers. This first Blacklab release on NHS is a version of their ‘Under The Strawberry Moon’ album which was released in tiny numbers on CD only in Japan, a pull together of previous tracks and new songs recorded in 2017. But the NHS variant is different. Wayne Adams (Death Pedals, Shitwife, Casual Nun) has remixed the tracks to maximum effect, upping the fuzz and weight of the originals. You will not be disappointed. Blacklab are: Yuko Morino, guitar and vocals. Chia Shiraishi, drums. SIDE 1 1. Black Moon 2. Hidden Garden 3. Spoon 4. Symptom of the Blacklab 5. His Name Is ... SIDE 2 1. Warm Death 2. Limited slurry brown vinyl LP (+DL). This London band (including former Dopefight frontman Owen Carty) have been turning heads on the underground scene not least because of their combination of tie-dye and corpsepaint, but with a staggeringly heavy live show that has everyone who sees them agreeing that they’re about to become huge. The band’s tongue-in-cheek approach belies their dedication to all things heavy and riff-shaped. A jaw-droppingly powerful live band, Bad Kush have already completed European tours including shows with Bongzilla and Boss Keloid, since their inception in late 2014 and they have an amazing live reputation in the UK and Europe’s stoner/doom/psych scene. Paddy Hanna - Frankly, I Mutate Strange Brew Rekkids LP

SBR006LP 5055869505758

$26.99

"On Frankly, I Mutate, he has mutated into something rather unique and incredibly interesting indeed.” The Irish Times. A cult figure in the Dublin music scene, he has released numerous critically acclaimed singles before retreating inwards. But now an album bursting full of Hanna’s morose charm and sardonic wit. Poetically, the studio where the album was recorded, Bow Lane, was knocked down a month after the album’s completion. Job done in timely fashion. The album, produced by Daniel Fox of Girl Band is searingly honest but for those familiar with Hanna’s previous singles, that will come as no surprise. Hanna’s songwriting has always has always sat somewhere between awkwardness and charm, that is something producer Daniel Fok wanted to convey through the production of the record. The key was to retain the anarchic nature of the songs while making them sound as they were always intended: rich and lavish. The result is an album that recalls the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Scott Walker - dark humour and vulnerability - accompanied by Phil Spector-like arrangements. Previous single Bad Boys, an infectiously catchy song featuring a trumpet line recorded in just ten minutes, as Hanna explains “They charged by the hour and we wanted him in and out as quickly as possible.” New single Toulouse The Kisser is upbeat and pulsating, highlighting Hanna’s variety of vocal delivery as well as subject matter. Paddy Hanna has an authenticity other musicians strive towards for years. That realness, that melancholy, that dry sense of humour are all in abundance on this album. 1. I Saw The Man Part II 2. Bad Boys 3. Ida 4. All I Can Say Is I Love You 5. Mario Lanza 6. Reverends Graves 7. Toulouse The Kisser 8. Spanish Smoke 9. Sunday Milkshake 10.

STREET DATE: 0 8 /1 7 /2 0 1 8 Since meeting in Tucson (at the University of Arizona) in 1999, guitarist Randy Bergida and cellist Topu Lyo have made a habit of recording their long talks. As their friendship deepened, the conversations took on an endless sprawl, much like the literal ground they’ve covered in almost 20 years of playing and criss-crossing North America together. Lyo and Bergida never expressly set out to do anything with the recordings, but when they started their duo New Indiana, subjects from forgotten discussions began to bubble up in their singular adaptation of traditional roots music for acoustic guitar, cello, and vocals.

Rehearsed and demo’d mostly in a Brooklyn basement apartment during late night recording sessions, Darkness Sunshine derives its luminescence from the fact that Lyo and Bergida had to play very quietly to avoid disturbing the neighbors. No strangers to effects pedals and amplifiers in other projects, they opted to rely on natural resonance with New Indiana. But cranking their preamps gave the recordings a sheen they hadn’t expected, and the end result is an ambience that’s both intimate and immense, not unlike a whisper rising to the vaulted ceilings of a cathedral. Where so many artists (with good reason) succumb to the allure of twang, on New Indiana’s debut Darkness Sunshine, Lyo and Bergida set off for... somewhere else. As far as anyone involved in the making of Darkness Sunshine knows, there’s no real-life place named New Indiana. But it’s not quite fair to say that it doesn’t exist. The album references myriad locales that spark the imagination: Montana, the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Coast, the Yucatán city of Mérida, etc. In some respects, then, Darkness Sunshine functions as a set of travelogue postcards. Fair enough --- the pair has seen its share of tumbleweeds, deserts, mountains, ocean water, and open skies. (Lyo and Bergida also play as perhaps the world’s most unconventional wedding band, New York Ceremony Music.) But Darkness Sunshine also grapples with the discrepancies between the idea of one’s homeland as mythical fable, as conflicting idealized visions, and as bitter truth. Likewise, the music bears the contours of growth and tribulation that every close friendship, every community must inevitably weather --- understanding paid for with friction.

Randy Bergida and Topu Lyo have never recorded their more difficult exchanges, but Darkness Sunshine wouldn’t be what it is without them: a serene record whose healing light shines all the brighter against the shadows it casts.

WHITE DENIM PERFORMANCE

Over ten years and seven long players into their career, White Denim are still in the relentless pursuit of a thread - in other words, a wick. The band have carefully studied the greatest records ever made, but they write songs just dumb enough to drink, dance, and fight to. Theirs is a music that aims for the whole body, while equally satisfying the mind. While it has morphed, expanded, and even burst apart, White Denim’s sincere drive and ability to spark exhilaration have been unerring constants of the band’s existence. Singer-guitarist James Petralli and bassist Steve Terebecki have a new studio, new collaborators, and new techniques for writing and recording, influencing the elastic possibility and liberation felt throughout their new full-length, Performance. If the album’s title seems meaningful in its dead pan simplicity, it is. There is, of course, the meaning of “performance” that applies to anyone for whom the live arena is the proving ground. There’s also something more personal but universally acknowledged – the gap that exists between what we project and who we really are. “There is something absurd and isolating in continuing this pursuit for personal connection on such a wide scale. When writing an album I essentially leave my actual life, retreat deeper into myself and as it nears completion, I evaluate my work based on my own extremely skewed notion of what is widely relatable and still legitimately cool.” Petralli says, “My idea of cool is most significantly shaped by Steve’s body language when we are talking through ideas in session.” It has been said that “A clown enriched knows neither relation nor friend.” Categorically speaking, White Denim is still impossible to narrowly pin down. There’s everything from the glam-rock strut of “Magazin” and “It Might Get Dark,“ to the sideways jazz of “Sky Beaming.” There are plenty of pleasingly unexpected ear snags on the title track and the easy-rolling closer “Good News.” In the title track “Performance” Petralli sings, “Flashing light in a tunnel, You’re indicating a change.” In many ways, White Denim is a flashing light in a dark and crowded tunnel of showbiz glop, fervidly finding themselves and us through their work. “One of the best live bands you will ever see if you live to be a million. That’s not excitable hyperbole, merely a bald statement of undeniable fact.” Time Out “The last great rock & roll band!” The Guardian Calendar May 09: Album announce + “Magazin” single + Pre-Order + Tour PR May 16: NonCOMMvention & advance radio promo trip June 12: “It Might Get Dark” single PR June 19: Advance Radio Market Tour August 14: “Fine Slime” single PR Post release focus: “Good News” Videos https://www.youtube.com/user/whitedenimtheband Marketing - Robust retail marketing budget + Posters + Stickers

STEADY HOLIDAY NOBODY’S WATCHING

bark179 CD / LP+MP3

STREET DATE: AUGUST 24, 2018

Steady Holiday is an appropriate name for an artist whose music feels like the soundtrack to your fondest memory. Or your deepest heartbreak. Or the dream sequence from a David Lynch film. There’s a nostalgia present in Dre Babinski’s songwriting that leaves you longing for the familiarity of a bygone era – just not one you can necessarily pin down.

After years growing up playing in bands around Los Angeles, Dre recently began writing and recording for herself – on her own, in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Establishing a sound defined by her featherlight voice floating above sweeping strings, her 2016 debut Under the Influence led to opening for artists like Mitski, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Whereas the first record took us on a trip through the deeply personal, Dre’s sophomore album Nobody’s Watching zooms way out. What began as a concept record about two archetypal crooks developed into an exploration of universal themes like greed, fear and self-interest; the ugly and troubling edges of human nature. It’s a good time for that. Dre worked with producer Gus Seyffert (Roger Waters, Beck) to create a sound that echoes the narrative told on Nobody’s Watching. From the sunny and observant to the dark and critical, the tone ranges from levity to paranoia through layers of analog synths and chilling strings played by Dre herself. There are moments of cinematic intensity reminiscent of a James Bond score, yet the subtle tape hiss and creaking chairs remind us that this is an album made by people. It is warm, and it breathes, the same way the human touch can both soothe and suffocate. Nobody’s Watching is the natural next step for Dre and Steady Holiday, a project that builds worlds we wish to escape to or from. It’s an examination of the inner narratives we all share but keep in the shadows, where the characters may not always be likable, but they do what they can to survive - like we all do. MARKETING NOTES • Her first single as Steady Holiday “Your Version of Me” was released to immediate praise, garnering 200,000+ streams in a few weeks and catching the attention of Coachella founder Paul Tollett, who added the band to the 2016 festival, where they were a breakout hit. • Her debut LP Under the Influence was released in June 2016 to glowing praise in FADER, Stereogum, LA Weekly, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls, Flaunt, Consequence of Sound and more. • Last fall, Steady Holiday opened for Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the Santa Monica Pier; in October she toured with Islands; and in November LA Weekly named her the city’s Best Solo Artist. • Previous support at radio has included KCRW (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle), KDHX (St. Louis), KKFI (Kansas City) and many more college and non-commercial stations • National / regional / tour press campaign being handled by Grandstand. • In-store play copies and posters available. LISTEN HERE The Giant Who Ate Himself And Other New Works For 6 & 12 String Guitar is Glenn Jones at his most vivid, exploring memories old and new through beautifully woven threads of melody. His unparalleled skill and creativity exhibits the mastery Jones possesses of his craft, further cementing his position as a pillar in American Primitive guitar music. Recorded in New Jersey by Laura Baird and mixed by Matthew Azevado, The Giant Who Ate Himself And Other New Works For 6 & 12 String Guitar, make for an exceptional evening of listening. The album’s title is itself is an homage for Jones’ mentor John Fahey, whose friendship with Jones spanned 25 years. The people whom Jones surrounded himself with too share a presence in the pieces throughout the album. “A Different Kind of Christmas Carol” took on an entirely new life for Jones after his curmudgeonly, Scrooge-like introduction to the song at a show in Pennsylvania was met with beaming enthusiasm from a child. The arching journey of “From Frederick To Fredericksburg” recounts a day Jones spent with old friend and collaborator the late Jack Rose while visiting renowned 78 collector Joe Bussard and their journey home late into the night. Sounds of the rural New Jersey outdoors of the recording studio even find their way onto the album with the sound collage piece “River In The Sky.” Jones approaches his compositions first and foremost as concepts, emotions, and colors. Every step in his process of writing and recording is in service of creating a distinct character for each piece. According to Jones, “To get that sense of place and time, you have to let the world into the recording.” By giving glimpses of the colorful personalities who have affected him, Jones’ The Giant Who Ate Himself in turn shows us who he is: a master of his craft, continuing to reach for more.

Memphis Instrumental Kings - Impala return to the studio to create this brandnew album, aptly titled In the Late Hours. In the Late Hours features ten intoxicating guitar- and sax-driven instrumentals, born out of that golden era of Memphis music when rockabilly, rhythm and blues, jazz, garage and soul music collided. These songs channel potent ghosts—namely, Packy Axton, Willie Mitchell and Ike Turner, all pioneers of Memphis’ instrumental scene—but they’re hardly derivative. They bristle with urgency and make your heart beat fast. They’ll make you wish for a time long past—when men wore hats in the street and women wore silk stockings fastened with a sexy garter belt. Part spaghetti western-influenced, part noir, Impala first appeared in Memphis, Tennessee in the early 1990s, just as the next wave of surf and garage rock groups began to pop up. Beginning in 1994, Impala released four albums and a handful of singles, performed at festivals like Garage Shock and Sleazefest, opened for originators Dick Dale and Davie Allen and the Arrows, and landed multiple songs in movies and television shows, including George Clooney’s Chuck Barris biopic Confessions of A Dangerous Mind. In the early 2000s, Impala disappeared.  The band was put on ice. Members of the group found other ways to make a living: composing film scores out in California, bail bonding in Memphis, doing private detective work, and freelancing for various combos at honkytonks and “adult-themed” nightclubs across the U.S. Yet their muse pursued them like a siren’s call. Unable to resist, Impala reformed in 2017, and after woodshedding with a series of local gigs, entered Electraphonic Recording Studio in downtown Memphis to create In the Late Hours.  This isn’t retro, or revivalist. This is music created by four men who, had they not found a way to soothe their savage beasts, might’ve met in a juvenile reformatory. It’s tautly restrained, like a homicidal maniac that, until he wields his axe, calmly sips tea or practices taxidermy techniques. It’s music that is a remedy for hard times. Put it on, and let your mind wander. Take refuge in those darker places. Pour yourself another drink. And make sure the door’s locked—it’s later than you think.   -Music video for “Double Indemnity” to be released in August -Radio and press campaign in progress -Record release show in Memphis on 8/25/18 at Bar DKDC   -Tour dates coming soon. -Features members of The Bo-Keys, St Paul & the Broken Bones and the Gregg Allman Band

Whitney Ballen You’re A Shooting Star, I’m A Sinking Ship

/fatherdaughterrecords @father_daughter

August 24, 2018

“Imagine Joanna Newsom as a ghost, benevolently haunting a cabin in the woods." - Seattle Weekly “Whitney Ballen's songs are quiet in a way that both augments and disaffirms the very real (and earth-shattering) emotional wreckage therein.” - KEXP “Anytime Whitney Ballen launches a new project, it's worth paying attention. Ballen is a thoughtful songwriter with a beguiling singing voice that finds good company in Mirah, CocoRosie, or even Joanna Newsom.” - The Stranger

For fans of Lucy Dacus, Jenny Lewis, Angel Olsen Hometown: Seattle, WA “It’s easy to get down on yourself / When you’re surrounded by people who don’t know what goes on in your head,” Whitney Ballen sings on the title track of her latest LP, You’re A Shooting Star, I’m A Sinking Ship. It’s the irony of existing in a world filtered through social media—comparing real life to curated ones, and longing for validation that seems further away with every scroll of the touchscreen. The album’s twelve tracks are set perfectly in Ballen’s Pacific Northwest, a place collectively pictured in a romantic mist that blots out its everyday banalities. Vocally, the Washingtonian shares space with the likes of Mirah, Laura Stevenson, and Jenny O. Describing her sound, Seattle Weekly writes, “Imagine Joanna Newsom as a ghost, benevolently haunting a cabin in the woods, and you’ll get an idea…” In contrast to her unique voice, Ballen’s music resembles many things, and covers endless ground. There are the bedroom dreamscapes, suspended between rousing from sleep and falling back into it (“The Kiss”); nightmarish tones that growl and distort (“Black Cloud”); swells that expand and contract like the breaths of a resting lover (“Rainier”); and a dreamy mountain twang that echoes beautifully in the ear (“Mountain”). It’s all sowed with unabashedly honest lyrics that make Ballen’s music equal parts visceral, vulnerable, and resilient. Falls, Ballen’s moody first EP, was recorded in 2014 at an old firehouse, with love letters to Olympia, Rainier, and Snoqualmie Falls. Ballen traded the firehouse for Phil Elverum’s church studio for the recording of her second EP, Being Here Is Hard. As its title suggests, this unexpected group of songs was shaped by the experience of losing people and being left to live in their absence. You’re A Shooting Star combines influences from both of Ballen’s earlier releases—leaving the magnificent beauty of the Pacific Northwest, then longing for it and the intimate connections made with the people in the rearview. Each song is awash with jealousy, threatening to drown in the impossible storm of comparing everything we are to everything but ourselves.

TRACK LISTING:

Jack Rose is remembered and reveared for his innovation in contemporary guitar music. His influence had only just begun to take flight before his unexpected death in December of 2009, right before the release of what sadly was to be his final album, Luck in the Valley. Still, his music and influence, much like his person, bold, hearty, and rooted in traditional American music continues to be a source of reference for guitarists and musicians carrying traditional American music into modern times. Jack Rose first rose to prominence with the drone/noise/folk unit, Pelt. Pelt can be counted among the early influential new music underground bands such as UN, No Neck Blues Band, Charalambides, Tower Recordings and Six Organs of Admittance. Rose recorded and toured with the band up until 2006. Rose released his first solo LP in 2002, Red Horse, White Mule, of post-Takoma, American primitive guitar. Along with the influences of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Rose also incorporated North Indian classical, early American blues, bluegrass and minimalism into his singular style. 2005 saw the release of his fourth LP, Kensington Blues, which incorporated all of the aforementioned influences and his playing/composing fully flowered. That LP is now considered a classic of contemporary guitar music. In 2008 and 2009 Rose released Dr. Ragtime and Pals and Jack Rose and the Black Twig Pickers respectively. Those recordings featured many additional players like Glenn Jones, Micah Blue Smaldone, Harmonica Dan and The Black Twig Pickers. The songs drew heavily on pre-war influences, either written by Rose or were his arrangements of early American classics. Luck in the Valley is the third album in this set of recordings that Rose jokingly referred to as his “Ditch Trilogy”. This recording set out to capture the energy and feel of the classic three-track shack recordings by the Wray Brothers and Mordicai Jones. Luck in the Valley was written and recorded over a period of nine months off the road, an unusually long time for Rose to have be at home and woodshedding. The album found Rose employing new themes and techniques that haven’t appeared on previous releases. Like all pre-war recordings and all of Rose’s releases, this album was recorded live. It was not created using overdubs but rather by recording a few “takes” and selecting the best performance out of those. Rose stated, “I wanted the songs to have an immediacy and spontaneity as they were being recorded. All the musicians chosen for the record know how to play the songs without overworking the material, but at the same time creating memorable accompaniments on the spot.” Several of the songs are in fact the first takes like “Blues for Percy Danforth”, “Lick Mountain Ramble” and “Woodpiles on the Side of the Road”. Also Included in the set are three covers: “St. Louis Blues”, “Everybody Ought to Pray Sometime” and “West Coast Blues”. All of these pre-war classics are Rose’s unique arrangements. The album title refers to the old red light section of St. Louis and was a code for procuring the services of a prostitute. Rose said “I read about it on some liner notes to a reissue of pre-war St. Louis recordings and I liked the ring of it.” Luck in the Valley found Rose at his best surrounded by like-minded friends on a recording that is enriched by a sense of history but entirely new, vibrant and warm.

LISTEN HERE Don’t Look Away is Alexander Tucker’s third album with Thrill Jockey, completing what Tucker views as the final piece to a trilogy that began with Dorwytch (2011) and Third Mouth (2012). His music brings a distinct otherworldliness, bringing the listener beyond the confines of the physical world, and, much like the album cover alludes to, collages together sound that both brings you outside the atmosphere whilst simultaniously connecting you more closely to the seeds of existence. It is in this direction that Tucker continues to carve a position as one of Britian’s most forwardthinking songwriters. Recorded over an extended period in London and mixed in Daniel O’Sullivan’s Dream Lion Studio, Don’t Look Away emerged during a particularly prolific creative period for Tucker. The album finally came together while Tucker was in Zürich composing for the Schauspielhaus Zürich, and while he was establishing UNDIMENSIONED, his own publishing imprint as an active member of London’s wildly creative independent comic scene. As a result, Tucker’s wider work feels more present here than on previous recordings and this shows itself often in the lyrics, which range from relationships, including the uncomfortable ones we often have with ourselves, to sci-fi imagery and cosmic horror. The musical landscape of Don’t Look Away is illustrated on the cover’s hand cut collage, created by Alexander Tucker. Viewing each aspect of his artistic output, be it visual art, comics or music, less as separate disciplines but more of as part of one connected whole - Tucker studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and has always drawn comparison between the layering of paint and the layering of sound - he explains: “The worlds I evoke through sound sit alongside the imagery within my comics, drawing and paintings. There is a melancholia and sadness about the transitory aspects of our earthly lives, alongside a fascinationwith the beauty and inexplicable nature of existence.”

Y A R N / W I R E Images of Duration (In homage to Ellsworth Kelly)

Written between 2015 and 2018 for the acclaimed New York percussion and piano quartet, Yarn/Wire, Alex Mincek’s Images of Duration (In homage to Ellsworth Kelly) is a monumental work by any measure. With a runtime close to one hour, it is not only Mincek’s longest work to date, but also one of his most intriguing. It is scored for two pianos tuned 1/4 tone apart (441 and 428 Hz, respectively) and a vast array of percussion including tuned gongs, air canisters, waterphone, baby monitor, and white-noise machine alongside more traditional instruments like drums, vibraphone, marimba, and chimes. This instrumentation, while wildly varied, creates an ever-changing landscape that is brutal, disorienting, beautiful, meditative, and jarring - often at the same time.

time, and the sheer scale of Images of Duration allows for listeners to discover different modes of listening for themselves. The individual movements can function as sonically flat landscapes (like Kelly’s work), but upon deeper listening, the many multiple layers can be teased out and followed, creating an arc across the whole piece. The music traverses movements that range from Oblique’s piano rumble and ebow drones through the sparkling detuned piano passages of Vermillion to violent piano glissandi of Diagonal, all punctuated by massive percussion hits throughout. Images of Duration (In homage to Ellsworth Kelly) exemplifies Yarn/Wire’s commitment to the most dynamic and forward-looking chamber music made today.

One side of me is very much against the explanation and intellectualisation of my work. This side of me says the work is just another world and we won’t get anywhere by talking about it. That it’s a distraction from feeling it. The other side of me loves to intellectualise and interpret. But of course, it’s always just a temporary snap shot of what I project in the moment. I call these two sides the child and adult in me. They’re constantly in conversation as I work and after. The child is a lot more present in the process of working, and the adult has a bit more presence afterwards. For the last EP I wrote brief snapshots of what each track meant to me. Some of it still feels true now, and some of it has changed. For this EP I’ll just leave it with no explanation. I’ve done a lot of new visual work that will come out alongside this and they can also be interpreted and paired in any way. If this EP is your first encounter with my work and you want more context, you can check my website and Instagram. It’s all the same world.

STREET DATE: JULY 13TH It Records is proud to release the stunning new double album from Melbourne/ Berlin singer songwriter Ned Collette: Old Chestnut. A truly accomplished work, a gorgeous dark folk opus, fleshed out in lush but precise and sparkling instrumentation thanks to a band of extraordinary collaborators. Featuring regular Wirewalker cohorts Joe Talia (who also co- produced the album with Collette) and Ben Bourke, plus Alexander Garsden, cellist Anthea Caddy, and piano from The Necks’ Chris Abrahams. Ned says that Old Chestnut is the first album he has made that “feels like the albums I always wanted to make. It’s just messy enough, elaborate enough, simple enough, improvised and collaborative enough…” and it does feel like Old Chestnut is an elevation, and that with it, he has attained a level of songcraft that transcends his already impressive back catalogue. With snippets written as far back as 2008 and 4 years since his last album release, it’s been a long journey. The resultant work is cohesive and articulate in a way few albums are. A mixture of melancholy balladry interwoven with daedal and often delicate instrumentals that not only frame and anchor the “songs” but beautifully showcase the calibre of Collette’s arrangements and musicianship. This is the record that will etch the name Ned Collette into the lexicon of great Australian songwriters.

After coming to prominence as a member of the cello-driven group Rasputina in the 90s, she went on to arrange and play on numerous recordings and tour extensively as a member of Antony and the Johnsons, among other projects. The opportunity to explore her own emotional and creative world came with her solo LPs, Delay (2007) and Green and Grey (2011), and it is something she appropriates fully on her captivating debut for The Leaf Label, Character. Recorded alone in her home studio, Character develops the layering techniques Kent brought to the fore on her previous solo material, the flow of intertwining cello motifs working as an external representation of competing internal meditations. “I ended up thinking about the process of life,” explains Kent. “How sometimes a narrative in fiction is meant to mirror the chronology of human life, and how our lives, in a way, can resemble works of fiction, but without the possibility of controlling the outcome the way an author can.” Thus, she called the album Character, a reference to the notion of humans being characters in their own narrative. On Character: “A listening experience of nearly cavernous depth and poetic beauty” 4/5 AllMusic

T. BENNY & THE BUZZ BROTHERS GIMME A BUZZ b/w THE DROUGHT WCK - 1006 A/B Wick Records is pleased to present another platter that matters, by Queens County's newest instr umental sensations... Introducing! T. Benny and the Buzz Brothers. The tape from said session was sent to Daptone HQ with only a small note that said: For Wick - Conceived at a smokey late-night session at (the famed) Diamond Mine Studio, in Long Island City. No information about the musicians or personnel was shared, but upon hearing we promptly called Diamond Mine to exclaim "WE WANT THIS RECORD!" Anonymity aside, these mysterious folks have turned out two of the most exciting instr umental tunes of late! The A-Side, "Gimme A Buzz", upon first look, one may expect a homage to any number of intoxicating substances - but it is in fact - a Link Wray inspired mauler that is a three minute sonic knee-to-the-face. The searing guitar lead over the unassailable groove builds a hellish beast upon a sur f-rock skeleton that seductively lures the listener into oblivion. The flip-side, “The Drought”, is a brooding dirge whose relentless rif f and doom-inspired, repetitive thump sounds like a ritualistic melody used to conjure an unholy bringer of r uination. A darkly satisfying instr umental of fering. Fingers crossed we'll hear more from this group soon...

EIGENLICHT - SELF-ANNIHILATING CONSCIOUSNESS 2LP RELIC94 BLURB INFO Since its inception in 2014, Eigenlicht has existed as an entity with reverence for the world both seen and unseen. Each member of the project has chosen a path dedicated to the study of either the natural world or the fundamental nature of knowledge and existence. Their music is built upon experiences of the past and a striving for knowledge to come. The band explains its origins thus:

EIGENLICHT SELF-ANNIHILATING CONSCIOUSNESS RELIC94 CAT#: FORMAT: 2LP BLACK METAL GENRE: LIST PRICE: $33.99 PRICE: 798576902360 UPC: ARTIST: TITLE:

“Eigenlicht arose from a failed pilgrimage, everything discarded and given to dissolution, no treasure to bring back and no nobility nor honor to salvage. But upon its opening that void immediately invited torrential winds, which assembled a collection of persons intimately bound by shared ideals and goals, at the opportune moment, in the nexus of our spiritual home in the valley of the Oracle. Thus a new direction was set and the process spontaneously fell into place. Each movement forward a self-overcoming, each a step toward inner nobility. Love and sentiment discarded into the crucible of roiling chaos. Seeking triumph even in failure, moving from impermanence to the eternal. Honoring loss as sacrifice, failure as wisdom; seeking a savage grace steeped in myth and a determination to ascend the slopes of sanguine gods.” With its debut EP in 2015, Sacral Regicide, Eigenlicht began to draw the attention of many who hold an interest in underground U.S. black metal. This early impact was in some part due to the members’ previous work in Skagos, Fauna, Ekstasis, and other well-known projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. On SELF-ANNIHILATING CONSCIOUSNESS we see the work on Sacral Regicide standing as a foundation—but all aspects evolving with an impassioned urgency. Synth-laden dooming tones set the stage for an intense journey through a domain of ethereal black metal highlighted with majestic instrumentation to accompany the shrieking wails and chaos. A journey best described in the band’s own words: “Self-Annihilating Consciousness is an exploration into the realm of gnosis that both illuminates and destroys, that draws out the truth of Being even as it ruptures our conceptions of Self and Other. Molded around a black metal core, it spills open at times into angular meditations, cosmic thralldom, and orgies of ecstatic metallic fervor. The album coheres around mind-altering revelations that bring a mirror to the invoker only to then shatter the reflection. Logos wrestles with Abyss in an eternal struggle over who will properly wield the blazing sword of intangible truth.” The album will stand as a testament of discovery and enlightenment. Self-Annihilating Consciousness was recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios by Ethan Camp in May 2016, mixed and mastered to tape by Pete deBoer at World Famous Studios in Denver in February 2017. All photography within the album’s packaging by Amjad Faur, who also executed the album’s layout with J. DeLacy. Eigenlicht is: Yianna Bekris (guitar) Ray Hawes (guitar/vocals) Mara Winter (keyboards/vocals/flute) J. DeLacy (drums)
