Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight!

This Issue: Jim Olsen at Signature Sounds

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

My introduction to the music industry began with college radio in the 70’s. I grew up in the NY area completely obsessed with music and the radio. Once I got on the air, my career path was set and a bunch of radio gigs followed. I also got involved in producing live music pretty early on and was a founder of the Green River Festival 40+ years ago.

When and where did the label begin?

Signature Sounds began in 1994 in Western Massachusetts. I was programming a commercial AAA station, 93.9 The River at the time. We had a local music show called Homegrown and we hit upon the idea of doing local compilation albums as a benefit for the food bank. We recorded much of the music for those albums at Signature Sounds Studios and the owner of the studio Mark Thayer became my partner and the name stuck.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area, and if so, how is this reflected in your releases?

The label started to promote the local music scene in Western Massachusetts, which had a super fertile music scene in the 90’s and launched many great bands such as The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr and Sebadoh plus great songwriters like Dar Williams, Ray LaMontagne, Martin Sexton and others. All of our early releases were from Western Mass artists and we still represent great locals like Chris Smither, Heather Maloney and Winterpills.

How has the label changed since it started?

The label was started with very modest ambitions and a complete lack of experience so we had a long era of trial and error before we found our footing. We started in a completely different era, when everything depended on CD sales and there was no internet music. I’m proud of the fact that we were able to navigate and thrive through all of the changes that have happened over the years. All along our goal was to sign young artists and be a driver of artist development. That is still our ethos today.

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

Oddly, the pandemic was a good period for the label. When things shut down, we immediately pivoted to producing live stream shows for our artists and others, producing over 100 shows in two years and helping keep everyone afloat. We also saw a significant increase in our direct product sales and streaming numbers.

Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

I still do a 3 hour weekly radio show on The River which is focused on roots music and Americana. I spend a lot of time checking new music for the show. I also see tons of live music as well. As for recent favorites, I’m digging the new albums by Dean Johnson, Clover County and the band Fust.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

We tend not to get too wild with these things, but for the 10th anniversary of Bad Self Portraits we created 4 unique artwork versions of the album with different color themes and new artwork with lots of bad self portraits of the band.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

I love making colored vinyl releases as it’s such a cool extension of the album artwork. Our most unique LP color was definitely Clown Vomit (look it up!)

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

I must admit that I thought the vinyl resurgence was going to be a passing fad. It’s literally the only instance that I can recall where we brought back a dead technology years later. I’m still amazed that anyone would pay $35 for an album. I’ve always been a CD fan and continue to collect them, mostly because they are best to play on the radio.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

I think the biggest change is the ability to have direct contact with your fans. In the pre-internet days you had very limited ways to connect with the folks buying your records. Now you can connect instantly.

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

That is one downside of the return of vinyl. Every step of the process from production to delivery is inefficient and environmentally detrimental. CD’s aren’t much better. We have to make a collective effort to figure out a better way forward.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

I feel like we are on the front lines of First Amendment rights, and it’s our duty to allow artists to express themselves through their art even when you might not agree with their views. So many of our favorite artists have struggled with mental health issues, and having an artistic outlet to express themselves is a benefit to everyone.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: There are so many great ones!!! If I had to pick one, it would probably be Waterloo Records in Austin…one of the oldest and the best!

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? We’re not gonna last 5 billion years!

Reveals the superb material as the missing, debauched L.A. link between “Exile on Main Street” and “Appetite for Destruction”. –– LA WEEKLY

BACK IN STOCK

Largely overlooked at the time of its release, “Kill City” is now seen as a dark rock and roll classic. Recorded in 1975, the album offers a vivid, unflinching portrayal of rock decadence, street life, and self-destruction. The songs are gritty and often nihilistic, yet they retain moments of poetic beauty and even vulnerability. In many ways, Iggy’s depiction of his own life—and of Los Angeles during that era— echoes the worlds conjured by John Fante, Raymond Chandler, and Charles Bukowski. Guitarist, producer, and songwriting partner James “Straight” Williamson contributes some of the most memorable rock riffs ever recorded, including the iconic one on the title track, “Kill City.” The album was originally released with a muddy mix, but this remixed and remastered version, overseen by both Iggy and James, finally restores its brilliance. Today, “Kill City” stands as one of the greatest proto-punk records ever made.

A Holly Jolly Jill Barber Christmas

For Jill Barber, nothing signals the start of the holiday season like the needle dropping on her most cherished Christmas albums: the cozy familiarity of Bing Crosby’s smooth baritone on White Christmas, getting dolled up in holiday glam to the soundtrack of Ella’s A Swinging Christmas, the glimmer of hope you feel when Nat King Cole’s buttery voice sings “chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” or the childhood wonder you experience when The Muppets perform their playful rendition of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" It’s this feeling of lightness, hope and nostalgia that inspired her to create her first-ever collection of holiday songs, "A Holly Jolly Jill Barber Christmas"

Produced and arranged by Grammy Award-nominated Drew Jurecka, the album is wrapped in Drew's lush string arrangements and tastefully decorated with the jazz stylings of Ewen Farncombe (piano), Nathan Hiltz (guitar), Chris Banks (bass) and Davide Direnzo (drums) and features a charming duet with her big brother Matthew Barber on the family classic "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," a sexy rendition of "You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," a swinging version of Kelly Clarkson’s "Underneath the Tree" and two brand new original Christmas songs, written for the occasion by Jill herself.

Claps and stomps through the wreckage of heartbreak. Jangly guitars and jubilant horns disguise the sharp edges of emotional neglect, asymmetrical desire, abandonment, and longing—while the music mirrors the fevered shifting of blame. Never bitter but brutally honest, Thao recounts love’s collapse in a delicate balance of near-obsessive detail and poetic ambiguity. A soundtrack for sad people who dance—even if it’s on the ruins of love.

: Apparat (15th Anniversary Reissue)

Sascha Ring aka Apparat’s work as a producer, artist, musician, live act and DJ has always been in a constant state of metamorphosis, while simultaneously always managing to stay true to his trademark musical sound.

There is a unique spirit that lives within his projects and productions or rather they all have this special vision of music which becomes more distinctive with every release and spans his ‘Multifunktionsebene’ and ‘Walls’ albums on Shitkatapult, his ‘Moderat’ album made together with the boys from Modeselektor on Bpitch Control and his DJ-Kicks mix for !K7.

Following on from Kode9 and his friend James Holden, Apparat offers a wonderful mix and insight into the tracks that have influenced and roused his passion for club productions over the years as well as his current favourites in his box.

The mix includes an exclusive track ‘Sayulita’. Together with this mix, it also symbolises a nice reference point in an important chapter in Apparat’s own history – club music This is a chapter that is by no means finished, for the more he succeeds in re-writing the narrow parameters of techno music, the more important it remains as the driving force in his life

Lepidoptera—the scientific name for butterflies, meaning “scale-winged”—is also the title of the seventh studio album by renowned music producer, bestselling author, ecologist, and knowledge mediator Dominik Eulberg. Set for release via !K7 Records, Lepidoptera blends his signature sound with an urgent ecological message It marks the pinnacle of a music career spanning over three decades.

Eulberg’s fascination with butterflies began in early childhood and has since become a lifelong passion. Drawing from years of experience as a producer and DJ, Eulberg presents his most technically ambitious work yet

At the heart of Lepidoptera are twelve native butterfly species, handpicked by Eulberg from the 3,700 known species in his homeland. Each track is inspired by one species, shaping the album's structure and grounding its creative focus.

MY BABY DON’T DIG ME

With his newfound fianancial and creative freedom, the early ’60s became the most prolific and profound phase of Ray Charles career. Exploding with ideas and hitting one peak after another, even Top Ten hits were left in the dust, never finding their way on to any of his groundbreaking albums of the time.

No One Does It Like . . . Ray Charles! finally gathers those orphaned singles into one instant-classic LP, meticulously crafted to sit musically and visually alongside his other landmark albums of the era—as if it had been there all along.

Packed with the Top Ten R&B hits “No One,” “Hide Nor Hair,” “At the Club,” “Don’t Set Me Free,” and “My Heart Cries for You,” this isn’t some cleanup collection of leftover rarities. It’s an album showcasing an icon at the very top of his game, proving the title’s point: no one does it like Ray Charles.

Look what glyded in, y’all drop Forever on the platter and get the house party started! Glyders been dreaming up this sound for ages over years, with different players, countless shows and many late nights at the tape machine. It’s been a long ride to Forever but now that they’ve arrived, the vibe’s lightning and the blink of an eye.

Guitarist/vocalist Joshua Condon and bassist Eliza Weber started up in 2014, but even when they put together their 2023 album debut, Maria’s Hunt, they still had a revolving door on the drums. Then they met Joe Seger, who fit on the kit like a glove and in their sound like a brother. Since then, the three have ridden together, building up Forever while playing shows all around the US and Europe. It’s been an awesome couple of years for Glyders, in all real senses of the word, the blood, sweat and tears of life made better by their shared bond. This makes Forever ’s spirit high and tight, its sinews rumbling with communal joy. They really get off on it! And they’re not alone. These new jams have been kicking ass at all the shows too.

Yep, the song nugs of Forever sprouted branches and spokes on the road, the increased physicality driving their mellow licks and riffs with a great depth of rolling bottom, its groove taking them further into their own thing. After all this time, the streamlined new chassis feels mighty fine, making this the first real band album for Glyders. Listen to “Super Glyde”: the humid bluesgasm kicks off Forever with three distinct waves of sheer rock energy. That same spirit is bottled like an almost krauty reserve for “Hard Ride,” trippy but compellingly taut. “New Realm’’’ll rock yuh too, and even the first song they wrote as a new band, “Tell Me About the Rabbit,” sheds and shreds with life as recorded we can feel it still growing as we listen.

Glyders got a mess of old-school tuneage in 'em, a rich vein of ore mined from the rock masters y’know, Creedence/ The Band/JJ/ T. Rex / Leon Russell/and lots more shaping the immaculate forms of “Moon Eyes” and “Thousand Miles.” These sweet tunes punctuate and emphasize the wind and rain in the hair of Forever ’s driving jams. Glyders like to keep shuffling the deck. Like with “Stone Shadow” one minute, Josh is singing, “Ain’t got no money/I just wanna have a ball,” then he’s bringing hard steel on the other side of the street with, “it’s time to realize/I’m in it for the rest of my life.” Fuck yeah!

Taped at their own Studio “G” in Chicago’s Humboldt Park, with Josh getting the sounds they like, then mixed by Cooper Crain at Sweat Loge Studios down in Pilsen, Forever is super rich, crackling with the raw details of real life. The title comes from a battle cry within the band, something they hear at shows too. Eliza 's amazing art emphasizes this for life credo, mixing classic roots with punk collage style drawn from years of flyers. It’s like a family/club vibe, the kind of thing you get tattoed into your skin.

Forever lands smooth, its lightning-quick 37 minutes leaving you plenty of time to live. Flip it over and let it go again, then! Meanwhile, Glyders roll on, magnetized by the horizon, making tracks to parts unknown Forever ’s just getting started!

ON BEACON HILL ANTHONY MOORE WITH AKA & FRIENDS

SALES BAN: NO EXPORT SALES TO AUSTRALIA, EUROPEAN UNION, GREAT BRITAIN, NEW ZEALAND. SEND ON BEACON HILL IN ALL OTHER TERRITORIES

On Beacon Hill: at twilight we find Anthony Moore, roots winding backwards to the halcyon days of Slapp Happy and the ‘70s progressive art rock scene, at guitar and piano. With the atmospheres and accompaniments of AKA & Friends, he breathes infernal new life into songs from his six decades of multivarious music making. This new delivery system is unto a séance, a communal incantation, twining Anthony ’s avant and pop traditions together in a darkly radiant coil of folky chamber music; a rope to lower the listener through cobwebs and murk, unveiling new life beneath Anthony ’s mad old lines.

It is new life that we will need if we hope to reoccupy this cursed earth.

AKA are Anthony Moore, Keith Rodway and Amanda Thompson. A pagan family of sound worshipers hailing from that unholiest of all places: Hastings UK, home of Crowley and Turing. Like their sinister forbears in that infamous tradition, this latest trinity shares a passion for subverting pattern and number, factoring unlikely permutations arising from sea and horizon, greensward, the southerly aspect, and the planisphere as half-world. Their equatorial shore speaks of a planet of water and earth, fire and air. AKA’s humble tools of choice for this endeavor are guitar, piano, organ, synthesizer and vocals.

The Friends of AKA are Tullis Rennie, trombone and electronics; Olie Brice, double bass; Richard Moore, violin; and Haydn Ackerley, guitar. They too navigate the shoreline of the south coast, haunt the same taverns and regularly play together in whatever combinations fit the bill.

Leaving the drums (and their drummer) at home to realize anew these dreamladen songs, AKA & Friends ensure that the notes fall around the beat and not on it, so as to define the pulse with absence. As such, time is liberated, prised free from the merciless clock; a rhythm of waves, passing through a steady-state universe of no beginnings and no endings. Discontinuities are dissolved, all is transition.

On Beacon Hill: Anthony Moore with AKA & Friends manifest a sensuous post-devastation lounge act, seeking to re-invoke natural orders by naming rather than cursing the darkness in its many guises. Like final-phase Johnny Cash on a lost episode of Twin Peaks, Anthony ’s innate gravitas is a light through the surreal landscape, as the players combine themselves again and again, their efforts rising and falling in shared space. Their gothic jazz orchestra carves delicately through Anthony ’s songs, releasing the melodies and the melancholy to drift upward, like smoke against a sooty and scorched backdrop.

On Beacon Hill: fantastic, prophetic journeys, dry eyed but deeply affected, through the shadow depths of Anthony Moore’s mirror. As we listen, we gravitate and journey alongside fellow refugees in solidarity and solitude alike.

just something you cared about in high school

Lou Salome is a love story in the form of a band an imagined romance between NYC glam rock poet Leah Hennessey (Pornography, Make Out; stepdaughter of David Johansen of New York Dolls) and L.A. dream-pop actor/musician Jack Kilmer (Palo Alto, Lords of Chaos, Val, Hala, The Nice Guys; son of the late Val Kilmer).

Their debut album, Just Something You Cared About in High School, is a cinematic, fuzz-drenched archive of lost youth, tracing infatuation, collapse, and the ecstatic myth of rock & roll as salvation. It sounds like falling in love on a VHS tape gritty, glamorous, and painfully romantic.

Quattro Racconti” is a new version of the debut solo album from Wobbler’s Lars Fredrik Frøislie - This time in Italian, with Stefano “Lupo” Galifi from the legendary Museo Rosenbach on vocals! “Fire Fortellinger” became a great success when released in 2023, and when the opportunity for Lars to do one of the songs in Italian with Galifi, he did - and the 10” release of “Un Posto Sotto il Cielo” came out. And later, when Wobbler played a festival in Italy in 2024, Frøislie went to visit Galifi and to record vocals for the rest of the album. The result is stunning!

FRØISLIE who is himself a huge fan of Italian Prog in general and of MUSEO ROSENBACH in particular, explains:

“When I wrote “Et sted under himmelhvelvet”, I imagined an Italian version in my head with just STEFANO "LUPO" GALIFI'S vocals. Not so surprising, perhaps, since he is one of my my favourite vocalists. I have loved his slightly raspy, but powerful and soulful vocals, ever since I discovered MUSEO ROSENBACH as a teenager.

When the opportunity presented itself, I thought it couldn't hurt to ask him, and it gave me much joy that he was actually willing to sing on this. He brings a new dimension to the songs, and it’s incredible that he actually sings just as well today as he did 50 years ago.

For me, it was both emotional and surreal to hear a voice I have known and loved throughout much of my life, singing my songs.”

Tony Tixier Poems Never End

11/21/2025

'Poems Never End' isa complete, honest expression of pianistTonyTixier's current status as an artist and as a human being, captured in a single afternoon during a whirlwind visit to New York City. Whether in thrilling trio interaction with long-term associate Joe Martin on bass and dazzling young drummer Jongkuk Kim, or reviving old friendships and musical partnerships with special guests Logan Richardson, Seamus Blake and Mino Cinelu, the passion and integrity shines through every note.

Without a predetermined plan for the course of the session, the band set up in the studio and the tape started rolling. This spontaneity is captured on 'Child Mind' as we hear Tony and his colleagues lightheartedly exploring the sonic confines of the environment. 'The Heart Is Lost' has the direct melodic accessibility of a pop ballad deepened by Tony's harmonic sophistication, expressingapleafor communication, whilethefast, straightahead swing of 'Present' compels us to engage with the present moment. This sense of engagement finds expression in the overtly political 'Poem For The Oppressed' where the trio are joined by Seamus Blake and Logan Richardson, each of whom makes a passionate contribution in their unmistakable voices to this paean for those who are excluded from power. Other tracks include 'Pardon My Church', which has the gospel-tinged feel associated with Keith Jarrett's 1970s output, referencing Tony's stint as a church organist in Manhattan, updated and reinvigorated by the trio's effortless spontaneity.

FUZZ-LADEN BOSTON PSYCH!

• Features two newly discovered previously unissued tracks!

Though short-lived, this power trio is defined as one of Bostonʼs cornerstone bands during the late ʻ60s. Their popular Bosstown Sound opened opportunities that included almost constant performances at the Boston Tea Party, the Hatch Memorial Shell and the Psychedelic Supermarket. They were even billed with names like the Velvet Underground. But of groups labeled with Bosstown Sound (Orpheus, Beacon Street Union, Ultimate Spinach), Edenʼs Children had by far the most unique sound.

“The self-titled Edenʼs Children album rocks heavy with psych fuzz guitar, echoing, rotund bass runs and wild drums. Rich plays hard and fast, much like Alvin Lee in the band Ten Years After at times. The softer tunes have intricate guitar runs with overdubbed vocals by Richard, their only voice. The band fits right in with other power trios like Cream, Hendrix, Chariot and Blue Cheer. The only single released was "Goodbye Girl" b/w "Just Let Go" that made the local charts in the east and the LP made the top 200 on the Billboard and Cashbox charts [in 1968].”

PARQUET COURTS

Light Up Gold | Tally All The Things That You Broke | Sunbathing Animal

Early Parquet Courts Catalog Back in Print on Rough Trade Records on November 28, 2025

Light Up Gold

Originally released in 2012, Light Up Gold – Parquet Courts first proper LP – is a dynamic and diverse foray into the back alleys of the American DIY underground. Bright guitars swirl serpentine over looping, groovy post-punk bass lines and drums that border on robotic precision. Lyrically dense, the poetry is in how it flows along with the melody, often times as locked-in as the rhythm section.

Though made up of Texan transplants, Parquet Courts are a New York band. Throw out the countless shallow Brooklyn bands of the blasé 2000’s: Light Up Gold is a conscious effort to draw from the rich culture of the city - the bands like Sonic Youth, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground that are not from New York, but of it. A panoramic landscape of dilapidated corner-stores and crowded apartments is superimposed over bare-bones Americana, leaving little room for romance or sentiment. It’s punk, it’s American, it’s New York... it’s the color of something you were looking for.

Tally All The Things That You Broke

Originally released in 2013, the Tally All The Things That You Broke EP is far more than a stopgap in between full-lengths; it’s the sound of Parquet Courts stretching out. It frames the band coming from a new place, and is a post-millenial NYC anthem, quintessential sounds for anyone who’s ever waited in anticipation of dialing that number, or anyone who’s put on their game face and rode from point A to point B in the snarl of vicious traffic.

Sunbathing Animal

2014’s Sunbathing Animal was the third Parquet Courts album. While heightened in its heaviness and mania, the album also represented a huge leap forward in terms of songwriting and vision. Still rooted firmly in the unshackled exploration and bombastic playing of their earlier work, everything here is amplified in its lucidity and intent. The songs wander through threads of blurry brilliance, exhaustion and fury at the hilt of every note.

Pitchfork noted that “The impeccably structured Sunbathing Animal calls back to their Texan roots, its wide-open sprawl freed of the band’s explicitly urban trappings.”

Peel Dream Magazine Taurus

le under: dream pop experimental indie pop pop

Info:

One year on from the release of acclaimed album Rose Main Reading Room, Peel Dream Magazine return with new mini album Taurus

Spanning eight previously unavailable tracks that were originally recorded for their lush and inviting 2024 full length, Taurus offers a wider glimpse into songwriter Joseph Stevens’ process and creative output from those sessions.

The band, whose name nods to the BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel — arbiter of all things underground, quality, and (it must be said) "cool" — has since its inception been a genre-hopping experiment, jumping from motorik krautrock to shoegaze and space age pop.

On Taurus, Peel Dream Magazine remain explorative, drifting effortlessly across a gamut of styles that range from the twee indie pop of lead single “Venus In Nadir,” the title track’s cozy vibraphones, and the bubbly space-synths of “Seek and Destroy.”

Although unbound by genre, Peel Dream Magazine still inhabit the sonic milieu of warm woodland tones and droning repetition. In the entrancing standout “Believer,” they evoke Rose Main Reading Room’s atmosphere through vocalist Olivia Babuka Black’s mantric melodies and Philip Glass-like woodwinds and mallets, bringing Taurus into focus as a welcoming companion piece to its predecessor.

-Pitchfork

"Compared to the primarily virtual instruments of Pad, here Stevens took his home recordings and went around to various studios, where he had various other humans play. It results in a fuller, lusher sound that, in the end, makes Rose Main Reading Room feel more like a new destination built on a synthesis of everywhere Peel Dream has been."

-Stereogum

"Stevens' new work as Peel Dream Magazine marks another exciting turn from an artist always in motion. Rose Main Reading Room turns Stevens' music into a delirious maze with surprises at every corner."

Experimental textures bridging acoustic and electronic worlds

OVERVIEW:

In 1983, Grammy-winning Brazilian percussionist Marco Bosco released Metalmadeira a groundbreaking fusion of handbuilt percussion, early drum machines, and lush synth textures Four decades later, celebrated Curitiba-based collective Alter Disco (Bárbara Boeing, Phil Mill, De Sena) reimagine the album for today’s dancefloors

Working from the original stereo recordings (the master tapes long since damaged), Alter Disco preserved the organic feel of Bosco’s unquantized rhythms while infusing them with deep, modern grooves The result is a cross-generational dialogue between Brazil’s early electronic avant-garde and contemporary club culture.

Highlights include Pedra, pulsing at 130 BPM with a vintage vocoder line nodding to Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins, and Camila, which wraps Bosco’s sharp percussion in atmospheric synths and hypnotic beats.

Metal Madeira II is raw yet refined live instrumentation and electronic production in perfect balance, blurring the line between archive and innovation

MAGNETIC MORNING

MAGENTIC MORNING is Adam Franklin

Fogarino from

The Magnetic Morning story began 20 years ago, over multiple bottles of wine on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. On this boozy winter’s night, Jack Rabid from The Big Takeover magazine introduced Swervedriver’s Adam Franklin and Interpol’s Sam Fogarino and the two recognized each other as kindred spirits immediately. Realizing the only thing to do with this connection was to start a band, they did exactly that. Adam tapped his old friend Jimmy LaValle from The Album Leaf to handle the keyboards, and thus Magnetic Morning’s signature blend of Shoegaze, Krautrock and Psychedelia was born.

Originally self-released by Sam in 2008, A.M quickly sold out and has been a sought-after collectible amongst Swervedriver and Interpol fans ever since. This re-issue has been fully remastered by Tim Turan and features all new artwork, with stunning photography from Pat Graham. (Johnny Marr, Fugazi, Modest Mouse) Pressed on bone white vinyl, this limited-edition reissue is not to be missed!

The Saints – Long March Through the Jazz Age

Long March Through the Jazz Age is the last album by Chris Bailey and The Saints. It’s a moving farewell - a testament to a restless, uncompromising artist who always moved forward, one of rock’s great lyricists and iconoclasts.

Recorded in late 2018 at Church Street Studios in Sydney, Bailey and longtime Saints drummer Pete Wilkinson flew in from Europe to reunite with guitarist/engineer Sean Carey, who had previously toured and recorded with the band. They were joined by Davey Lane (You Am I) on guitar, plus a handpicked ensemble of Sydney’s most exciting young horn, string and keyboard players. From Bailey’s rough demos, Long March Through the Jazz Age grew into a deeply human snapshot of modern times.

Empires (Sometimes We Fall) is the album’s anthemic opener, cast on a bedrock of western guitars punctuated by Bailey’s aching lyrics: “Sometimes we rise, sometimes we fall”. It’s the perfect set up for an album that swaggers with Bailey’s inherent punk spirit while flowing freely in a spacious production. A 12-string adds harmony and warmth to the string-laden Judas, it is a glorious melancholic piece, Gasoline smacks of the Stones country honking for Exile On Main Street, while Bruises is a candid recollection of how this celebrated troubadour got to where he did.

There are moments of Dylan-esque majesty as chiming guitars and strings widen the panoramic scale, while the title track carries a haunting, poetic intensity, its mournful trumpet break as spine-tingling as anything you'll hear. Long March Through the Jazz Age marks the end of Chris Bailey and The Saints’ remarkable journey - over four decades of music making and rule defying.
