Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

This Issue: Kurt DeLashmet, Label Manager & Co-Owner

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

My first real industry job was starting this label. I often think about how silly that is. I have always loved music, and specifically the independent music world, but for most of my life I never really thought of it as an option for work. Closest I came was applying to a job at Guitar Center and completely blowing my interview. I have participated in my local music scenes everywhere I’ve lived, including booking lots of house and DIY shows in Conway and Fayetteville in my 20s. Before Gar Hole, I was a sales manager for a wine and spirits distribution company for 10 years.

When and where did the label begin?

Me and recording artist Nick Shoulders started Gar Hole Records in 2020 while we were hunkering down during COVID. We had collaborated on releasing music in the past through a cassette label I started in 2018 called Tape Dad. We got to be friends after I put out his first two records, Lonely Like Me and Okay, Crawdad. on tape. After lockdown started, his music started taking off online and, long story short, we decided to start a grown up version of Tape Dad.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?

The label is based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, right at the start of the Ozark Mountains. The name “Gar Hole” partly came from a legendary swimming hole in this region. For those that don’t know, a gar is a type of ancient, armored, kind of creepy looking freshwater fish. They are all over the place in the rivers and lakes of Arkansas and the southeast. Gar are typically thought of as fish that are bad for eating, mostly because they have super thick scales and are hard to clean, not because they taste bad. They also can partially breathe air, so it’s typical to find gar in bodies of water where you wouldn’t find much else. Because of this, a “gar hole” is a colloquial term for a poor fishing or hunting spot.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

We jokingly like to call it “unamericana”, which I guess would be misfit and oddball country, folk, americana, and whatever else.

Someone recently told me that we put out “suspenders folk and country.” Not sure if that’s accurate. We do get a lot of the punk-tocountry pipeline folks. Like the folks who wear battle vests to the honky tonk.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

At first, starting the label was more out of necessity. Nick needed help capitalizing on his music’s new-found popularity and we were just trying to figure out the best ways to meet those demands. I feel like we have most of the mechanics down now, so it’s really about just continuing to push forward. We are really lucky to be where we are only five years in and I think the best way to honor those good fortunes is by continuing to take it as far as we can.

The other goal was just to use what we were learning and accomplishing and try to spread that benefit to other artists who were part of our music scenes in Arkansas and New Orleans: people like Chris Acker, Dylan Earl, Jude Brothers, and the Lostines. We’ve also gotten better at this over time and seeing the folks we’ve worked with from the beginning start to find real success is one of the things I’m the most proud of.

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

I hesitate to complain too much about this time because Gar Hole is really a product of pandemic era music business stuff, but if I had to pick one thing it would be manufacturing. I will always remember the heartache of not having vinyl on the release day for Chris Acker’s Odd, Ordinary & Otherwise, our fourth release, and the disappointed emails from customers. So glad that’s not a thing anymore. Shout out to Echo Base in Athens, GA and New Orleans Record Press in NOLA!

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

I’ll say Maddy Kirgo’s Shadow on My Light, an immaculate indie-pop / alt-country record we put out last year. One of those records where, if it was just about how “good” the music is, we would have sold 100,000 copies.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

For Nick Shoulders’ new record, we are selling mouth bows. We’ve sold over 100 so far, which has got to be a world record.

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?

We’ve always talked about wanting to do some kind of traveling roadshow thing. Put together a house band and caravan around putting on big showcase concerts featuring a bunch of our artists and friends. Would be a lot more fun than buying billboard ads or something.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

We’ll always try to keep vinyl affordable for stores and fans of our artists. It’s a fine line of needing to make the money we need to make and making sure things are attainable for people who want to support. Philosophically, the latter is more important to us. I do hope CDs keep coming back. It sure would make things easier!

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

We try to be as environmentally conscious as we can. We are a lean company that doesn’t create much waste which hopefully offsets the fact that most of what we do is ship little pieces of plastic everywhere. Our office is also completely furnished with furniture I’ve pulled out of dumpsters around town, so that’s pretty good. Also, no AI.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Block Street Records in Fayetteville, Control Records in Little Rock, Euclid Records, Domino Sound, and Sisters in Christ Records in New Orleans.

OVERVIEW

Growing up in the sound system culture of Leeds in England, George spent a fiver, courtesy of his mum, on a battered old speaker box he named “Echo45”. That box led him to Kevin Harper, a founding member of Nightmares on Wax, a chance meeting that would change the course of his life.

With the latest music “Echo45 Sound System”, Nightmares On Wax takes that lineage a step further—a mixtape that feels like both a celebration and a declaration. It’s a living, sound system journey inspired by the original “Echo45” speaker box that merges soul, roots, hip-hop, dub, and electronic textures with a fearless spirit. Featuring a carefully curated ensemble of collaborators—including Yasiin Bey, Greentea Peng, Sadie Walker, Liam Bailey, and more—the record doesn’t just reflect where Nightmares on Wax has been. While deeply rooted in his origins, sound system culture, and pirate radio, it boldly announces where he’s going.

OVERVIEW

On her fourth album, Unclouded, Melody’s Echo Chamber embarks on a life-affirming new chapter with an album that celebrates the present moment, whatever state we find ourselves in. There’s a continuity that runs through Melody’s Echo Chamber’s brand of psychedelic pop going back to 2012’s self-titled debut but now comes a perfectly executed shaking up of personnel.

Unclouded ’s impressive cast includes Swedish maestro Sven Wunder, who co-produced the record and contributed to the writing, bringing his unique sonic palette to the richly-textured canvas; Josefin Runsteen on strings, who brings her avant-garde smarts to the tableau; Dina Ögon’s Daniel Ögen on guitar and Love Orsan on bass who Melody describes as “masters of the velvet groove”; British drummer Malcolm Catto, collaborator with Madlib and DJ Shadow, and the powerhouse behind The Heliocentrics; and frequent collaborator Reine Fiske whose guitar parts can be heard throughout the record.

Last but not least, Leon Michels - the Wu-Tang, The Carters, Norah Jones and Clairo collaboratorworked with Melody on the album’s closer “Daisy”, a sparkling pop song plucked from the ether. El Michels Affair’s Grammy-winning mixer Jens Jungkurth was drafted in to bring everything to life.

judy collins: the ’60s Singles

(CD & Limited “Judy Blue Eyes” Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 5, 2025

Judy Collins transformed the sound of folk music. With a crystalline voice and a songbook blurring traditional genre lines, the Seattle native came to prominence in the fertile Greenwich Village stomping grounds of New York City. The luminous Collins - a classical piano prodigy, talented guitarist, gifted adapter and later, songwriter, and singer with a threeoctave range - signed with Jac Holzman’s Elektra Records in 1961 and remained an Elektra artist for nearly two-and-a-half decades. Now, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are revisiting the first decade of the extraordinary career that still flourishes today. The ‘60s Singles brings together, for the first time, the remarkable array of 45s on which Collins’ discography was built. With songs by Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Sandy Denny, Eric Andersen, and Joni Mitchell - including the international smash “Both Sides Now” - Collins’ early Elektra singles reflected impeccable taste, a vast musical imagination, a hunger to explore material from rock to art songs, and a powerful social conscience. Every one of these fourteen single sides is presented in its original single mix - most of which are unique mixes and edits, with the first ten songs in mono and the final four in stereo. These versions have been out of print and unavailable for over five decades and all have been painstakingly restored for this collection. Highlights include Collins’ first foray into folk-rock, the mono nonLP single of Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It with Mine;” the rare promotional stereo mix of Joni Mitchell’s “Chelsea Morning,” different from the commonly-available stereo version; and two versions of the classic “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season).”

Mike Milchner has remastered every track, The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese has penned the new liner notes diving into the history of each song, and John Sellards has designed the package in the style of the era. Available on CD and a “Judy Blue Eyes” vinyl edition limited to 1000 copies, The ‘60s Singles celebrates the elegance, power, and beauty of Judy Collins’ first decade of music.

The Devil Wears Prada: DEAD THRONE

(Remastered Yellow Glow Stick Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 5, 2025

The Devil Wears Prada’s 2011 album Dead Throne didn’t just hit the Top Ten on Billboard’s album chart… it also topped the publication’s Christian and Independent album charts! Which illustrates why this band stands out among the metalcore crowd…the savagery of its music belies its spiritual and intellectual concerns. Indeed, the theme of Dead Throne was anti-idolatry; as lyricist Mike Hranica puts it, “…making kings out of things that shouldn’t be kings.” Warning words to live by! And new producer Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage) lends Dead Throne a more stripped-down sound that sharpens its attack. For its first U.S. reissue, we’ve remastered Dead Throne for vinyl, and given it a yellow glow stick pressing housed inside a jacket with insert. One of the key albums of its era.

The band was close to breaking up (vocalist Kay Hanley had already started another band on the side) when they released Aurora Gory Alice on a small, local (Boston) label called Cherrydisc Records in 1993. A year later, after receiving extensive airplay in New England, Billboard finally reviewed the album and the next day the band played a much-celebrated show at South by Southwest. Major labels then came calling, and Warner Brothers imprint Giant Records signed Letters to Cleo, re-releasing the album in 1994. But fame and fortune STILL eluded the band until Giant was asked to compile a soundtrack for the TV Show Melrose Place and put “Here & Now” on it. Success, however long-delayed, was swift; the song went Top Ten on the Modern Rock charts and the album likewise cracked the album charts. That success was also richly deserved; Aurora Gory Alice presents smart, melodic indie pop graced with Hanley’s soaring vocals. We’ve remastered this ‘90s classic for vinyl, and, with the band’s blessing, are bringing it to retail on LP for the first time with a sea blue pressing. Recommended!

LETTERS TO CLEO: Wholesale Meats and Fish

(Remastered Highlighter Yellow Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 5, 2025

Nonstop touring afforded Letters to Cleo an opportunity to develop a harder-edged, more diverse sound, heard to excellent effect on 1995’s Wholesale Meats and Fish. The single, the propulsive “Awake,” is good…but the album highlight is definitely “Little Rosa,” a masterpiece of ‘60s-influenced jangle pop. Once again, we’ve had the album remastered for its first widespread vinyl retail release. Highlighter yellow pressing, released with the band’s blessing!

: Eris Drew

The next instalment in the classic DJ-Kicks series is a selection of rapturous house, blissed-out breaks, and transcendent rave from the high priestess of the motherbeat herself, Chicago’s Eris Drew

DJ, producer, musician, long-time resident at Chicago’s Smartbar, and co-creator of the T4T LUV NRG party and label, Eris Drew has been DJing since the early 90s, and has since taken her ecstatic house and high-energy, uncompromising mixing style to clubs, raves, and festivals worldwide

Eris’ DJ-Kicks mix is 79 minutes of, as she puts it “the funky, emotional, ecstatic house-and-breaks backbone that defines my sound”, and includes tracks, remixes, and exclusives by Moby, Calisto, DJ Garth, Onionz, DJ Who, Kair, Hoof, and Toka Project, as well as from Eris herself and partner Octo Octa

The result of countless hours of digging, her selection delves into the rattling breaks, rave stabs, and haunting strings of classic and lost ‘90s hybrid house-and-breaks jams, and matches them with more recent digs, the mix moving back and forth between emotive, bittersweet, and evocative, to raw, tough, and twisted with consummate ease

Put together on two turntables and a mixer in her New Hampshire cabin studio, this is more than just a collection of hype tunes: “I recorded it in my cabin with the violent world rolling around me Being in my refuge in the forest was important; the mix needed to carry the feeling of that place and the inspiration I draw from it ”

This is a mix that nails the Eris Drew sound and approach, where her perfectly pitched selections, seamless transitions, and highenergy cuts, scratches, and spinbacks are all employed in the service of a single aim: “I wanted the mix to feel like climbing a mountain - to produce an ecstatic sensation of overcoming ”

Eris first began mixing records together when she was 18 and hasn’t really stopped since, honing the skills that went into this mix for over three decades As she says: “I’m an all-vinyl DJ with 30plus years of mixing behind me, and I feel the mix reflects that.”

Many of these records have been with Eris for years and have travelled the world with her Some of them, you can hear their age, because she specifically asked the mastering engineer to preserve this in the reproduction Raw and real: this is the sound of Eris Drew.

A transcendent journey guided by layered vocals, spiritual melodies, and interstellar textures

OVERVIEW:

Following their acclaimed debut Spirits, New Zealand’s boundary-pushing jazz collective The Circling Sun return with their sophomore LP Orbits a deeply layered fusion of spiritual jazz, analog electronics, and percussive groove Where Spirits explored 1960s influences, Orbits shifts into the mid-’70s, drawing inspiration from Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Yusef Lateef’s Atlantic era, and the Brazilian jazz of Azymuth and Airto Moreira

The ensemble blends arpeggiating Prophet synths and modular electronics with acoustic instrumentation: saxophone, upright piano, vintage drums, and hand-played percussion

Tracks move seamlessly between danceable Afro-Cuban rhythms and expansive, ambient jazz meditations with layered vocals and choral textures guiding the listener through an interstellar sonic journey

Lush yet accessible, Orbits appeals to both deep jazz heads and fans of ambient, soulful instrumental music

Mercyland, led by David Barbe (Bob Mould’s Sugar), was a foundational post-punk trio from Athens, Georgia. Formed in 1985 and dissolved by 1991, the band left behind a body of work that never saw a wide release The band was nourished by a steady diet of the Minutemen’s Double Nickels on the Dime, Husker Du’s Metal Circus, Meat Puppets 2, Dinosaur Jr’s Yr Living All Over Me, Volcano Suns, and Mission of Burma “Mercyland" unveils eleven tracks recorded from 1985-1987 that are raw, urgent, and deeply tied to the American underground Produced and curated by Barbe, the collection draws from early 8-track recordings, studio demos and live performances. This is a necessary historical document of the earliest material of the criminally unknown band, which captures the spirit of a band ahead of its time

TOMMY WOMACK LIVE A LITTLE

STREET DATE

12/5/2025

On his new album Live a Little, acclaimed Nashville indie-rock singer-songwriter Tommy Womack reminds us that every moment is precious.

“I could have called it Life Goes On, but that would have been a little maudlin and a little too obvious,” Womack says. “The flip side of the death that runs though the record is life is fleeting, and don’t let it pass you by. Life goes on, yes, and you should live a little as long as you are here.”

Womack explores both dying and living on the album. He’s a deep thinker. The son of a preacher, he is comfortable writing about uncomfortable subjects — from the embarrassing to the fatal. Life isn’t fair, as he notes several times, and while “God answers every prayer, sometimes the answer’s no.”

The entire album is written from the perspective of an older, wiser guy; someone who has lived and learned and grown as a person and as an artist. Producer Eric Ambel calls it a “reflective record,” and while Womack may be in a reflective mood, it doesn’t blunt his artistic edge, which is honed with irony and humor.

Live a Little is Womack’s ninth solo album, and it is arguably his best. As usual, he offsets the heavier songs with humorous ones. His twisted sense of humor shines brightest on the punkish rocker “Horny Mormon.” The song, which was considered for the last Government Cheese album Love, is a hilarious take on the worldly desires of Mormon missionaries: “White shirt, black tie / What I got’ll make you cry / Sister you’ve got the look / I’ll give you more than just a book.”

Womack recorded the album at Ambel’s Brooklyn studio Cowboy Technical Services. They began discussing recording together after a tribute concert in New York in February 2024 for Ambel’s late Del-Lords’ bandmate Scott Kempner. Kempner had recorded Womack’s song “I’ll Give You Needles” on his 2008 album Saving Grace.

“We started talking about making a record together, and him coming up and doing it with me and my guys,” Ambel recalls. “He sent me what I like, just solo acoustic demos, and I got those to the guys so they could learn the songs without hearing somebody else’s parts.”

Ambel’s guys are bassist Jeremy Chatzky and drummer Kenny Soule, who anchored the rhythm section. Womack played acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica and mandolin, and Ambel contributed electric guitar, keyboards and backing vocals. Peter “Wet Dawg” Gordon also added piano to a couple of tracks. They recorded the 11 songs over a week’s time in August 2024 with some additional overdubs done later, including vocal overdubs by Lisa Oliver-Gray, Womack’s longtime backing vocalist, which were recorded remotely in Nashville.

“It was a lot of fun for me,” Ambel says. “Tommy carries a sneaky sophistication. There are some sophisticated chord changes, and being a Beatles, Cheap Trick, Kinks fan helps pull things a little bit away from the middle. And I’m coming from that same place.”

FIELD MUSIC ALBUM: FIELD MUSIC 20

YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION

LABEL: Memphis Industries STREET DATE: 24 October 2025

In October 2025, Field Music will release an expanded 2-disc edition of their self-titled debut, in celebration of the album’s 20th anniversary. The second disc of this new set will include the first ever vinyl release for the 2006 b-sides collection, Write Your Own History, as well as 3 more rare/unreleased recordings from the band’s formative years, brand new liner notes from former NME writer James Snodgrass, and archive material from the North East music milieu which gave birth to Field Music, The Futureheads, Maximo Park and more.

Field Music’s debut album arrived when post-punk-influenced guitar music was enjoying a popular renaissance. But where other bands combined skinny jeans and football chants, Peter and David Brewis, along with keyboard-player Andrew Moore, constructed a soundworld which was sonically terse, but brimming with musical detail and sophistication, borrowing from the baroque-pop excursions of Van Dyke Parks, The Left Banke and Todd Rundgren, as much as from Wire and Television. Setting a template which has sustained the band ever since, the album was self-produced at the band’s own studio space in Sunderland, with the brothers’ lofty ambitions far outstripping their limited experience. “As naive as it might sound, we really wanted to make music which didn’t rely on clichés,” says David, “And, while I don’t think we quite succeeded, I do think that first record stands as something quite unique.”

This reissue also marks 20 years of the band’s association with the pioneering and beloved Memphis Industries label. “Back in the summer of 2004, we sent a CD-R of the unmixed album to them with a half-pleading, half-defiant letter, saying we’d release it ourselves if no one else was interested,” remembers David, “and it must have landed on their desk at an opportune moment because 20 years and 21 albums later, they’re still putting up with us.”

Owls RareBirds

Owls, the inverted string quartet hailed as a “dream group” by The New York Times, and whose original, visceral, and personal performances defy categorization, announce their debut album, Rare Birds (out on March 14, 2025), via New Amsterdam Records Owls’s all star lineup is comprised of world renowned soloists, as well as current and former members of yMusic, Aizuri Quartet, and Kronos Quartet: Alexi Kenney (violin), Ayane Kozasa (viola), Gabriel Cabezas (cello), and Paul Wiancko (cello). The album was produced by Grammy™-winner William Brittelle.

Rare Birds offers a new take on a seemingly familiar form, inverting the string quartet with two cellos instead of two violins, while incorporating a playful approach to repertoire curation. Existing as something between a live concert, a playlist, and an album of creative premieres, reinterpretations, and William Brittelle’s outsidethe-box production, Rare Birds offers music imbued with creative energy in multiple directions. Vibrant double cellos build foundations for violin and viola to soar over, interwoven string parts flow through baroque harmonies, driving rhythms invite the listener to dance, and delicate textures transform into moments of rapturous joy. Owls’s unique instrumentation affords the ensemble the freedom to explore musical possibilities without the constraints of a traditional canon, resulting in an album that is as sonically distinctive as it is heartfelt

GideonBroshy Nest

The pianist, composer, and producer Gideon Broshy who is known for building musical clouds and swarms from sharp figures, using improvisation, synthesis, and MIDI, announces his debut record, Nest, via New Amsterdam Records. Nest features TIGUE’s Matt Evans (drums), the Silk Road Ensemble's Mantawoman (dulcimer), Hub New Music's Gleb Kanasevich (clarinet), and Grammy-winner William Brittelle (production).

The 12 tracks on Nest were built through the gradual accretion of improvised and electronic material, assembled into emergent forms over a 3 year period. Broshy gathers harpsichords, synthesizers, celestas, dulcimers, and pianos and transmutes them into bright, angular assemblages while tracing the erratic contours of ordinary feeling, thought, and encounter. “An ecology of gestures and objects, routes and relations, it’s attuned to the shape and mess of things, the oblique dynamism of the everyday: life feels angular, where inner experience meets the disorder of the social world,” explains Broshy.

Nest is a tactile and spatial experience; precise and atmospheric, jagged and lyrical. Broshy’s unique approach to developing the material blurs the line between improvisation and composition, mechanical and human to create a sonic experience that holds large extremes close to each other.

“Stornoway’s best work yet: big music, which deserves the largest stage.”★★★★★ – The Guardian Lauded on release as Stornoway’s most expansive and confident work, Bonxie remains a hymn to connection, ecology, and the beauty of life. This expanded edition includes previously unreleased B-side tracks from the original recording sessions, new liner notes from each member of the band, and some of their well-known unplucked versions of tracks on the album.

Bonxie is Stornoway’s boldest and most outwardlooking record, an album infused with a sense of wonder for the natural world and humanity’s place within it. Produced by Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters, Twin Atlantic), and a contribution from Craig Potter (Elbow), the songs carry field recordings of birds (20 species appear across the album), weaving them into melodies that soar like the great skua (or “bonxie”) that gives the record its name. Trinity presents five collaborations with acclaimed artists who work at the edges of sound and genre: Chris Abrahams (The Necks), improvising turntablist Marina Rosenfeld, Brendan Canty (Fugazi, The Messthetics), multidisciplinary artist Aki Onda, and the late contemporary artist and lowercase musician Steve Roden. The results deepen the music’s immediacy and directness, while pushing it in directions neither English nor Vitiello could have foreseen.

psychic warfare department

The compilation album is a rite of passage for all hip-hop producers. Whether it's Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor," Alchemist's "First Infantry," Dilla's "The Shining" or Marley Marley's "In Control Volume 1," the calculus is simple: call up the best rappers within your extended crew and ask them to spit flames over hard drums and hypnotic loops. Over the last decade, Chester Watson has dropped five albums and nearly a dozen EPs but the classic production anthology remained a gap in his discography No longer

With "Psychic Warfare Department," the Georgia surrealist has conjured a mutant hybrid, crossing a dazzling array of psychedelic instrumentals, eerie Vincent Price samples, and blistering cameos from a collection of some of the otherground's finest. Entirely produced by Watson, the Psychic Warfare conscripts include Gabe 'Nandez, Chuuwee, Marco Plus, Gabe 'Nandez, Archibald Slim, lojii and more It's alternately haunting and head-nodding, an enigmatic portal to the darker side. A masterful nü age horror thriller right in time for the onset of fall.

In Chester's own words: "the concept of the album spawned from my fascination with occultism and esoterica a lot of artists collaborate with artists that fit into whatever world they have built to surround their music and this is no different if not an emphasis. i felt like there was common thread between mëë and my collaborators in that we were all at one point seen as underdogs and may even now be all seen as antiheroes observers of life and sayers of the real, no matter how beautiful or ugly that truth is." - chester watson

BADGE EPOCH

FURRY WORRIED APE

RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 14, 2025

Furry Worried Ape (TER130) is the second album by Badge Epoch — Maximilian “Twig” Turnbull’s solitary variant of the Badge Époque Ensemble — and the first in his discography made almost entirely alone. Following 2021’s Scroll, a 2xLP sprawl which WIRE praised as “an attempt to fit a whole world onto two slabs of vinyl,” this one is all scalpel and no sprawl: six tracks, under half an hour, produced and mixed with forensic patience by Turnbull at Clyde’s Temple, his garage home-studio.

Built bar-by-bar on MIDI programming — using drum sounds from The Cloud Sound, a sample pack drawn from Badge Époque Ensemble sessions — the grooves bend the grid to their own logic, inhabiting an uncanny register between the performed and programmed. From this blur emerges a language steeped in the lavish elegance of Mizell Brothers productions and Love Unlimited’s symphonic jazzfunk, refracted through a modern “hauntological” lens; the peaks of 1970s studio arrangement, rescaled for an era of automation. Throughout, the album navigates multiple meanings of “funk”.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE KINTSUGI

Kintsugi takes its title from the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum, highlighting cracks rather than hiding them. As such, kintsugi represents a compassionate aesthetic philosophy in which damage and wear are embraced as part of an object’s history. Kintsugi was released after the departure of founding guitarist/keyboardist/producer Chris Walla, who recorded the album before announcing that he would be leaving the band.

“Considering what we were going through internally, and with what a lot of the lyrics are about, it had a great deal of resonance for us – the idea of figuring out how to repair breaks and make them a thing of beauty,” says bassist Nick Harmer, who suggested the name to singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard and drummer Jason McGerr. “Philosophically, spiritually, emotionally, it seems perfect for this group of songs.”

Kintsugi features the hits “Black Sun” and “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive,” plus fan favorites “No Room in Frame,” “Little Wanderer,” and “Good Help (Is So Hard to Find).”

Barsuk is pleased to release this double LP on standard weight black vinyl, packaged in the original deluxe gold-foil stamped gatefold jacket.

GARY NUMAN Telekon

45th Anniversary Expanded Edition With 4 Unreleased Bonus Tracks Including Never Before Heard Song “Like A B-Film”

Gary Numan’s second studio album

TELEKON was released in 1980 and was his third successive #1 album in the UK. Gary refers to this album, along with its two predecessors, Tubeway Army’s Replicas and his debut solo album The Pleasure Principle, as the “machine” phase of his career.

While it was hard to follow up the previous releases, Telekon proved to be hugely influential. Unlike its predecessors, Telekon had plenty of guitars, along with strings and lush synthesizer textures. Trent Reznor claimed to have listened to it every day during the making of Pretty Hate Machine.

Earlier this year, a visit to Gary’s archive allowed for a deep dig, and amongst all the treasures, unreleased Telekon material was found. We are thrilled to include four unreleased tracks on this expanded edition of Telekon. “Like A B-Film” is a completely unreleased, not quite finished track from the album’s sessions. The other three tracks are previously unreleased early versions of “Please Push No More”, “Aircrash Bureau” and “I’m An Agent”. Pressed onto double rainbow sparkle black vinyl, the album has been remastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road and includes revised artwork by Michael Speed at Beggars, who has frequently collaborated with Gary on his Beggars reissues. The vinyl edition also includes a replica of the original 1980 12-page Telekon tour booklet.

“Telekon has always held a rather warm place for me whenever I look back at the early years. I was very proud of it. I thought the production had moved up a gear for one thing. I was also proud of the fact that I’d not gone the commercial route and tried to repeat the formula and sound of “Cars” and “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” I was still trying to move forward, find new sounds. It was a reasonably bold stance I think, to not follow a safer, more formulaic path, as I suddenly had a lot to lose after the success of the year before.” – Gary Numan

FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM Dawnrazor

Remastered + available on CD + 2XLP colored vinyl

Formed in 1984, Fields of the Nephilim is the creation of vocalist and front man Carl McCoy. Highly influential, especially in the world of goth, but also within the metal and electronic genres, their legacy endures to this day. You can hear their influence on bands like Swans, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, Wolves in The Throne Room, Behemoth and more.

Dawnrazor is the band’s debut album, originally released in 1987. We are happy to announce a reissue of this title, out December 12th, remastered and available on CD + colored vinyl. The vinyl is pressed on white and is expanded to a double LP for improved fidelity. Several different versions of this album were initially released, featuring different track listings depending on what country you were in. This definitive version includes all 14 album tracks on vinyl for the first time and together on CD for the first time since the five album set.

The album’s opening track contains a sample of the Ennio Morricone theme “Man with the Harmonica” from Sergio Leone’s classic 1968 western film Once Upon a Time in the West. “Preacher Man” is an epic track that is often noted as one of the greatest goth songs of all time. Louder Sound wrote about the title track, saying “Its slow, menacing pace, complete with creepy otherworldly noises and stellar musicianship from the band take this to another level.”

In a remembrance of the album in 2017, The Quietus called their sound “music that sails into the multi-coloured waters of psychedelia” and Metal Hammer wrote that they “gave the UK scene a much-needed shot in the arm, revitalizing the sound by introducing metal’s power and urgency into the sonic mix”.

“When everything else failed me, the Nephilim inspired me and g ave me light in the darkness. As a musical vessel, we have never sold our soul or changed our tune to achieve major recognition. We always stood apart from everything else that was going on around us. T he goth scene embraced us, but then so did many other scenes and subcultures. In the early days the audiences didn’t know how to take us but that is why we did what we wanted to do and certainly were not interested in doing what other bands were doing.” – Carl McCoy

The Heath Brothers Marchin’ On! feat. Stanley Cowell

Released in 1976 on the pioneering Strata-East Records label, Marchin' On! feat. Metropolarity

12/12/2025

2025 is alandmark yearfor Dutch saxophonist JasperBlom -on apersonal level, it marks his 60th circuit around the sun: on a professional level, it marks his 40th year in a career that has propelled himto the very front rank of international jazz talent as a saxophonist, composer and bandleader, and italso marksthe20thbirthdayofhisacclaimed ensembleproject, theJasper BlomQuartet. So what morefittingtributecould there bethan forJasper to be joined by his JBQ colleagues Frans Van Der Hoeven, Jesse Van Ruller and Martijn Vink to perform new versions of some of his most celebrated compositions, in collaboration with internationally renowned Metropole Orkest? The album Metropolarity is the result: a stunning blend of the quartet's tight, intuitive improvisations, Jasper's innovative compositions, and the majestic sweep and breadth of the 50-piece ensemble. Metropole Orkest's forward looking vision has made it the premier non-classical orchestra in the world and its list of collaborators is legendary, from Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie to Jacob Collier and Louis Cole. Its signature blend of daring orchestration and melodic accessibility makes it a perfect fit for Jasper Blom's equally progressive but engaging style of composition, andtheindividual virtuosityofthequartet's players shines out all the brighter against the Orkest's verdant background.

This unique project is a fitting tribute to Jasper Blom's long and celebrated career at the front rank of European jazz performers and composers, his leadership of one of the most long-lived units in the music, and the boundless creativity and innovation of the Metropol Orkest.

Live At The Jazz Standard

12/12/2025

Pianist and composer George Colligan has enjoyed a long association with drumlegend JackDeJohnette, playingin Jack'sown band for six years. Jack returned the favour on George's acclaimed 2013 release The Endless Mysteries with Larry Grenadier rounding out the trio. A year later, George and Jack performed the music live at Manhattan's legendary, but now closed, Jazz Standard club, this time featuring Linda May Han Oh on bass.

This exclusive one-off performance entered into legend, equalling and perhaps surpassing the studio album in intensity and excitement. Now the recordings from that gig are released on Whirlwind Recordings as Live At The Jazz Standard. It's a compelling snapshot of a moment in the lives of three master musicians, all at different stages in their journey with the music, but all coming together in perfect accord to deliver a set of performances that dazzle with their power, empathy and utter conviction.

Ancient Infinity Orchestra It’s Always About Love

Black BioVinyl LP, in printed sleeve, packed to a resealable protective sleeve.

“Ancient Infinity Orchestra is an attitude: a love, enthusiasm and openness.”

Based in the North of England. Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a joyous large ensemble that has communal music-making at the heart of everything they do. And that includes the melodies that flow out of their new album It’s Always About Love which blossom with uplifting improvised contributions that circle around bandleader Ozzy Moysey’s beautiful songs; generous sonic gifts of healing and repair.

The 15-member ensemble has a distinctive line-up: two double basses, harp, saxophones, clarinets, violin, viola, cello, oboe, flutes, mandolin, congas, piano, drum kit, with bells, shakers and other percussion instruments scattered on the floor of live sets and recording sessions, ready for members to use whenever the spirit takes them. This orchestration, and the overlap between membership and friendship, gives Ancient Infinity Orchestra a sound that is at once expansive and intimate, earthy, and cosmic, constantly shifting yet grounded in shared intention. The attention to intention and their inviting sonic world connects the music to artists ranging from Alabaster dePlume to Gondwana label boss Matthew Halsall and draws on inspiration from the revered elders of so-called Spiritual jazz: Art Ensemble of Chicago, Pharoah Saunders, Coltrane (Alice and John), and Don Cherry.

The deep roots of Ancient Infinity Orchestra can be traced back to Ozzy’s childhood. After attending a Buddhist primary school in Brighton, where kids were encouraged to take part in improvised performances during assembly, Ozzy grew up in rural Lincolnshire. By the age of 11 he was teaching himself guitar and percussion and playing in his grandma’s church. At 17 he joined Boston Youth Jazz Orchestra, and then attended Leeds College of Music to study composition. It was here that in 2017 a group of musicians agreed to join seven-hour rehearsals, twice a week, in the shared house that became Ancient Infinity Orchestra’s first HQ. Gradually, the Orchestra became a grounding force in the emerging jazz scene in Leeds

Their debut, River of Light, was a vibrant celebration of togetherness recorded in three days and released on Gondwana in 2023. A Maida Vale session for Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show brought them to a broader audience, as did bookings at North Sea Jazz Festival and We Out Here. Their music can be described as melody-driven improvised music, made by people who are deep into different types of traditional music, including folk, jazz and classical. “The tunes are a vessel,” Lead Ozzy Moysey says, “with everyone doing their thing. It exists so that my friends can be musically fulfilled.”

On top of the musicality, communality, and expression, It’s Always About Love is also a study in simplicity, stripping away excess to uncover something pure, warm, and human. Highlights include ‘Chant for Don Cherry’, which he describes as a ‘campfire style’ thank you to Cherry himself and which features high-colour piano lines and gently propellant guitars. “His beautiful, organic music-making deeply affected me. He had a direct link to the magic and he left so much music for us.” ‘The Seeker’ features intricate arrangements where a chorus of voices swoop around the instrumentalists before dropping into an irresistible groove – one for those who loved Floating Points’ collaboration with Pharoah Saunders. Penultimate tune ‘Old Friends’ is a celebration of communality and connection, with players and singers allowing joy to permeate every aspect of the song, with collective whoops and impromptu applause kept from the original recording for us to revel in.

Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a gathering of voices, traditions, and energies converging into something timeless. Their music is a journey inward and outward, always reaching toward the universal.

The final word, though, goes to Ozzy. “There is a need for love and connectedness. You pour the love you have into the music and people listening can feel it”

Losing On A Tuesday Teddy Boys

As intrinsic to the Manhattan soul as the rumble of the subway, the grime of the Lower East Side or the ornate baroque glamour of the midtown blocks housing Ghostbusters’ ghouls, Adam Green’s music is as timeless as New York itself. Echoing through the depths of its dark lore, yet still relevant on sidewalks washed clean by gentrification, the singer-songwriter’s music not only invokes his hometown, but it captures the unique confusion and connection of life within a city: the awkwardness and the adventure, the love affairs and the loneliness, the society and the separation.

His 2005 solo album Gemstones, a sort of musical reply to Bright Lights, Big City, is firmly rooted in the Big Apple, its rockabilly rhythms rattle with the L-Train, its melodies hit like a fresh cross street gust, but whether you’ve visited New York or not its brisk, affecting songs will resonate with anyone who knows what it is like to be alone amongst the crowd.

Driven by Green’s beguiling baritone, from the album’s spinning, Wurlitzer-driven opener and title track Gemstones, via the chiming organs and voodoo maraca of Over The Sunrise, the irresistible rock’n’roll bop of Emily and the bittersweet lament of Losing On A Tuesday, the record is as affecting as it is surreal. Fantastical imagery and linguistic twists that evoke an Escher-meets-Sesame Street version of city life, but beneath Green’s visions, guided by his playful melodies, is a warm beating heart of genuinely moving emotions.

Yes, Gemstones can be heady and intoxicating, careering with an apparent free abandonment, yet it is also a warm, reassuring and ultimately nourishing record. On its release, the album made Green a superstar in Germany as audiences resonated with this 21st-century ‘The Two Cent Opera’ of intricate tales and bright tunes. Now, as Gemstones marks its 20th anniversary with a new vinyl release, it is time for all of us to step back and truly appreciate this musical diamond.

The most inspiring bands are the ones that can create a world around themselves that is about far more than just the music. The artwork, lyrics, sounds and ethos all merge together perfectly to create its own universe, a secret club. The Lovely Eggs are one such band. And against all the odds, 2025 sees them celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band! Stubbornly and heroically independent, The Lovely Eggs have forged their own path and have achieved mainstream success without ever compromising their DIY ethics.

Released on their own label Egg Records, with eye watering artwork by Casey Raymond and hand packed in a black plastic bin bag on neon toxic slime green vinyl, this is yet another collectible release from a band who care as much about the art and ideas in their records as they do about the sound.

“We had all these spare songs after we released our last album Eggsistentialism and we didn’t really know what to do with them,” explained Holly. “They just didn’t seem to fit in with the vibe of Eggsistentialism but we’d recorded them and wanted to get them out there.”

“They’re kind of a sketchbook of songs,” added David. “They’re not polished or laboured over but we thought it would be interesting to release them. It’s why we called the record Bin Juice. These were songs we had thrown away. But hopefully people like going through bins collecting trash.”

Berlin-based singer EERA returns with her third LP, produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor and featuring her strongest and most assured set of songs yet. ‘I’ll stop when I’m done.’ also marks the first non-PSB release for Public Service Broadcasting’s Test Card Recordings label.

'I’ll Stop When I’m Done.' marks the third album by Norwegian artist EERA and the first created from a research-based perspective. Titled after a Marilyn Monroe quote, "I won’t stop when I’m tired, I’ll stop when I’m done", the album interweaves the intimate and personal with broader reflections, and emerges as a studied celebration of the female experience.

Sparks of inspiration for the album began with viewings of old black-and-white films, which led EERA to dive deeper into the lives of the female film stars she encountered there. From Shirley Maclaine in ‘The Apartment’ to Marilyn Monroe in ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, the artist felt drawn to these icons and began researching their work and lives. “It felt as though I was having this conversation with these women in a dialogue that made me realise a lot about myself.”

This research surfaces in tracks such as ‘Honey, do you see me?’ and 'I’ll stop when I’m done'. The title track inspired by the Monroe quote begins with illusions of grandeur and, by the end, “breaks down into the lyric ‘I just want to find someone to love’. It’s telling yourself that you want one thing, then asking yourself: is it, really?” Here, the concept of a female muse is neither passive nor impenetrable. EERA frames her desires and vulnerability, which feel both achingly human and part of the rich, messy tapestry of womanhood.

The life of a psychonaut can take one to many plateaus of reality. Opinions vary as regards which of these are either desirable or optimal. All things considered though, it’s fair to say that once the average cerebral wanderer finds themselves a stoned skeleton on a motorbike, it’s a sign that they’re going places. Such were the movements of The Utopia Strong, in making their third and arguably trippiest full length album for Rocket Recordings. As the band explain: “When recording we tend to have books, bits of art and interesting things lying around the place. (Kavus) had recently bought the Paul Kirchner compendium, Awaiting The Collapse.” Paul’s character ‘Dope Rider’ (the skeleton in question) drives around the desert, getting into all manner of high jinx and spouting cosmic philosophy, highlighting the absurdities of life, death and the American mythos. “When we had created that particular track, one of our most beautiful and outré, it seemed to name itself.” Serendipity has always played a strong role in The Utopia Strong, with the improvisatory approach of Steve Davis, Kavus Torabiand Mike York - as well as the innate chemistry between the trio allowing them to evolve their approach to facilitate the most adventurous exploratory missions possible. In this realm, the band’s formidable history is transcended and usurped by their combined psychic intensity. Doperider does indeed take the band down a variety of auditory pathways previously unexplored, and further into the realms of more surrealistic visions akin to the systems-built bliss of Caterina Barbieri, the unforgiving noisescapes of Hiro Kone or the alien soundtracks of latter- day Laurie Spiegel. Essentially however, the mission of The Utopia Strong remains intactto offer a transformative pathway to wonders anew.

The taxidermy parrot had been a constant presence, there on the mantelpiece in Mike Bourne’s childhood home for as long as anyone could remember. No one was quite sure where it had come from – an heirloom? A chance find from an antique shop? All that seemed clear was that over time it had assumed mystical significance, watching calmly over everything that ensued. Following a troubled – and by some accounts haunted – sojourn in a museum, Mike became the ultimate owner of this parrot. There once again it sat, in his room and overlooking his home studio, as he sculpted music that took on unforeseen new dimensions. He pursued these uncanny vibrations right through to the creation of Bruise Blood’s debut You Run Through This World Like An Open Razor. The consequence is an album very much driven by supernatural forces – spectral influence moving through machine form to summon grandeur and abjection both. Whilst Bourne’s work with Teeth Of The Sea might give dystopian signposts to some, the soundscapes and explorations here – channelling techno, industrial, post-punk, minimalism and beyond – function to sculpt one singular vision. Recorded and mixed by Bourne himself and mastered by Amir Shoat (Dean Blunt, Klein, John T.Gast) it’s an audial realm as redolent of the disorientating world of a Harlan Ellison short story as bathing in the relentless strobe light of a 3AM dancefloor epiphany. Perhaps Bruise Blood’s vibrant, excoriating debut is the sound of humanity moving with slow inevitability towards darker times, alchemically transmuted into cinematic serendipity and beauty. Perhaps it’s merely the inspired work of one man, driven by forces he doesn’t entirely understand.

Perhaps only the parrot - the spirit animal still standing sentinel as we embark on an uncertain new aeon – really knows.

If you’re a serious music fan but not a native Kiwi, your first awareness of New Zealand’s fab music scene may have come from the debut of The Chills’ mesmerising Kaleidoscope World collectionn. Within a few years, a great number of NZ acts saw music released by various UK and US labels . . . generally to great praise and enthusiasm. That this occurred without any of these acts having to move abroad to further their chances was nearly as delightful a feat as the music itself.

The exception was Dead Famous People, who, after a five-song 12” for Flying Nun, Lost Persons Area, decided to make a go for it in London. It started well. Three London recordings were added to three from their Flying Nun EP and put out by Billy Bragg’s Utility label - about as perfect a mini-album as there's ever been. Response was positive, more songs recorded, the group did a Peel session and played out often, but began to fall apart. Singer/writer Dons Savage - determined to make it - had a near-miss at becoming Saint Etienne's singer on an early take of their 'Kiss And Make Up' cover, and there was a fine performance from her on The Chills’ 'Heavenly Pop Hit' . . . but dismay had set in. Upon learning of her mum’s passing back home, Dons returned to NZ and was quiet for decades.

Most of their London recordings were later released later in minuscule quantities by very small labels, but these saw scant press attention and enjoyed next-to-no sales. Their moment had passed, and the band has suffered the strange fate of being the least-known of the truly brilliant acts associated with Flying Nun. Listening to these ‘lost’ songs, it seems unfathomable.

After so long it becomes harder to say new things about older things you now just do. Some things you’ve become. Some things you simply (never simply) are. The thing becomes a slippery notion. The self slides along with it. After this long, the story is whatever are the songs.

Here are 11 new ones, from the current constellation, and a future still to come. The cement is still wet on that one.

From the forest near where I now live you can hear a chorus of different birds in voice at once, competing but each defined, in defence of a territory or to attract a mate. There’s an app that tells you so. I wonder, too, what that app doesn’t reveal, if their nature need not share those same purposes. This is simply (never simply) how it exists. If we can’t speak to the mysteries of these strategies, they at least persist, regardless of who picks up the frequency. Singing to itself, and there will always be these kinds of songs.

"adults’ new record is a pocketful of seeds, ideas, loves, fears and hopes which have sprouted, grown, and intertwined over the past two years. It's a jumble of indie pop, jangle, shoegaze, emo and country songs made in those moments in between. They say that the new album “gathers together echoes of the songs and bands we love into deeply personal songs about growth, change, loss and love, set to the background hum of a world which wants to crush all hope.”

The songs are patchworks of riffs, loops and overdubs stitched together by long time co - conspirator Rich Mandell over the course of 3 months recording on rooftops and warehouses in South London. This is the longest they’ve ever spent recording, (they did their first record in a day in a garage!) and have tried to put together a much more coherent, intentional record as well as just messing around with loud amps and gear they don’t have access to in their bedrooms!

dead red was always going to be the opening track, slowly building up from a wiggly synth stolen from early The World Is a Beautiful Place… songs and building and building and building. Although lots of their songs aren’t overtly political, each track has an undercurrent driving at radical change. There’s a lot to see red about at the moment, and growing up, many of us have been conditioned to snap, lash out and hurt those closest to us. According to the band: “over time, we’ve learnt from people around us that it’s possible to grow and change. People aren’t disposable, and working on how we respond to harm is vital for building a better world ”

From the mountains of Madrid comes Antinoë, the haunting one-woman project of pianist and vocalist Teresa Marraco. With her ethereal voice and stark, piano-driven arrangements, Antinoë shapes soundscapes where neoclassical elegance collides with the atmospheric weight of metal, weaving music that is at once fragile, immersive, and profoundly melancholic. Fans of artists like Agnes Obel or Enya will find resonance here, yet Antinoë’s world is darker, steeped in reflection, loss, and yearning.

Since its inception in 2021, Antinoë has embraced a uniquely personal approach to darkness, building her songs around intimate piano compositions intertwined with her rich, resonant voice. Marraco’s background in extreme music further anchors her vision: she has collaborated with acts such as Coldborn, Elffor, Balmog, and Empty, and recorded the piano/keyboard parts for Dimmu Borgir’s live performance of Det Nye Riket at Beyond the Gates Festival. Her 2023 debut, “Whispers from the Dark Past”, an acoustic reinterpretation of 90s Norwegian black metal classics, garnered critical attention and cemented her distinctive identity on the border between metal and neoclassical expression.

Now, Antinoë unveils her first full-length album of original material: “The Fold”. A conceptual journey that navigates the acceptance of death, tracing the process of “folding inward,” to confront different stages of grief, one by one, inviting us to walk a deeply personal path that nonetheless exposes universal themes such as existentialism and the embracing of chaos as a necessary part of oneself. With “The Fold”, Antinoë transcends genre boundaries to deliver music that is delicate, symphonic, and unflinchingly dark, an invitation to step into shadows and discover their hidden beauty.
