This Issue: Eric Warner, President of We Are Busy Bodies

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

When I was fourteen, I started a music fanzine. Initially, I had wondered about the process of interviewing my favourite bands, and learning more about what inspired them. I found that through meeting people in the music industry it continued my love and curiosity and in the process broke me out of my shell. Each lived experience started with an “I wonder if I can do this moment.” From there, I started promoting concerts, running a festival, playing in touring bands, booking tours, managing artists, and working in both music and entertainment marketing.

When and where did the label begin?

We Are Busy Bodies was launched in 2005 in Toronto. The band I was in at the time was breaking up but had recorded an album, which I wanted to release for posterity. It ended up being a split CD with our friends, Japanther which sold surprisingly well and let me reinvest the profits into the next release, and so on.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I used to view We Are Busy Bodies as a genre agnostic label, but at a certain point in recent years launched new imprints to separate things out a bit. While there’s a chance a jazz fan loves power pop and children’s albums, reaching multiple segments all in one household, I realized we needed to refocus.

How has the label changed since it started?

The label’s mandate was to champion the music of our friends and help them find new audiences starting with a few hundred, thousand, or more people. The only difference is while we were primarily capturing the music coming out of Toronto at the time and US friends acts I booked tours for. In the 20 years since, I believe that we’ve made some new friends and hopefully had a positive impact in the process.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Patient. We put out a lot of great music between our imprints, but it doesn’t mean each release will be met with the same response by a fan of a previous release. I think we’re consistent, that we care about the music and origin stories behind each release and work hard to communicate this in the process. Likely our fans are a mix of crate diggers and patient music fans.

Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

I’m biased, but I’m very much looking forward to Gwenifer Raymond’s ‘Last Night I Heard The Dog Star Bark,” Ken-ichiro Isoda’s ‘Beach of the Pliocene’ 2LP compilation, Danna and Clement ‘A Gradual Awakening,’ and Rich Aucoin’s Synthetic 4 releases through We Are Busy Bodies out this fall. Christo Graham will have a new fall album called Good Covers. He’s one of my favourite songwriters.

Through Having Fun, I’m very excited about The Boojums debut LP out on Halloween, which I think is going to be a big record for us, and for them. The same can be said about Absolute Losers sophomore album, ‘In The Crowd.’

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

I’m fine with colour vinyl. It’s artist and design preference. The coolest colour record I’ve done is a cornetto colour record that looked like a flower. I also did a short-run 5-colour series for a song by the band Electric Looking Glass for their Purple, Blue, Red, and Yellow song as part of the album promotion.

We like to have fun with our release formats. We’ve issued several King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard bootlegs because it’s allowed us to experiment with ideas we likely couldn’t sell through any other way. This has included a record shaped like a buzzsaw, a record that played in reverse, a record with an 80-piece puzzle, an LP with a hidden 7” embedded in a gatefold sleeve, and a glow in the dark record. We have a paper airplane shared record, and a record that plays forwards and in reverse on the same side and at two different speeds on either side of the album. We’ve also played records out of x-rays, embedded with Doritos, postcard singles, and a record that was actually a sandwich. What’s life without whimsy?

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? I’m always thinking about fun, weird things that I can do. Probably not the most expensive thing, but I’m trying to make a fully mirrored record. You’re welcome.

I’ve made a record that was a sandwich, mixed drink, and piece of fruit where I made all the bread, cooked all the elements (there was a vegan option too), and it came with a download code. That’s probably the weirdest one I’ve made. That probably ties into weirdest promotion as well. If you weren’t there, you didn’t get a “record.”

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

When I started in music, streaming was pretty much mp3.com or illegal torrents (Hi Metallica) early on. I worked for MySpace at one point, again aging myself. CD sales and even LP sales were significant and huge drivers. I now find that the press, which used to have a huge impact on sales, doesn’t necessarily have the same correlation necessarily, even though it remains exciting to see writers get behind each release. It makes it even more important to find ways to directly engage with your potential audiences; mailing lists, social media, targeted ads, etc. are all important.

The Lemonheads – Love Chant

“The Lemonheads' ability to merge punk rock’s energetic simplicity with lush, melodic hooks is both timeless and influential.” Pitchfork

After years of writing, wandering, and starting over, Evan Dando returns with Love Chant, the first Lemonheads studio album of original material in nearly two decades. Long in the works and shaped by shifting geographies and a cast of trusted collaborators, it’s a bold, melodic reaffirmation of one of alternative rock’s most distinctive voices.

Now based in Brazil, where much of the album was recorded, Dando’s relocation in recent years has offered a quiet shift in perspective a chance to reset, reconnect, and finally bring these songs into focus. The result is a record that sounds both fresh and familiar: rooted in the hallmarks of The Lemonheads’ best work, yet expanded by years of lived experience and new surroundings.

Love Chant was produced by Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Apollo Nove, it draws together old friends and new allies. J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), Juliana Hatfield, and Tom Morgan rejoin the fold, alongside producer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Antony and the Johnsons), Nashville’s Erin Rae, John Strohm of the Blake Babies and Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond. Adam Green of cult New York favourites The Moldy Peaches also contributes as co-writer on the loose-limbed country detour “Wild Thing.”

Over the past few years, The Lemonheads’ influence has only deepened. Artists like MJ Lenderman, Courtney Barnett and Waxahatchee have all covered Dando’s songs, praising the emotional clarity, melodic instinct, and wry intimacy that define his writing. That resonance across generations makes Love Chant feel like more than a return it’s a reminder of what made this band matter in the first place. Track List

The Reds Pinks and Purples – The Past is a Garden I Never Fed

NEW LTD SKY BLUE VINYL PRESSING

Having penned over 200 songs in the last six years, The Reds, Pinks and Purples release a collection of tracks previously unreleased on physical format that continues to romanticise the wonders and woes of the world.

With song titles that read like chapter sub-heads for a post-Douglas Coupland novella, ‘The Past Is A Garden I Never Fed’ takes The Reds, Pinks and Purples central orator Glenn Donaldson through the turmoil of small talk and everyday water cooler moments with a fine sense of pathos and irony.

Set to a soundtrack that swerves between the dark days of Television Personalities and Byrdsian twang to the Jarvis Cocker-styled rhetoric and vocal tenderness of ‘Richard In the Age Of The Corporation’ with hints of everything from Husker Du’s fuzzed splendour to the chiming majesty of The Chameleons it’s an empowering listen.

The pathos and irony of the glorious track ‘The World Doesn’t Need Another Band’ sets out the band’s store, it’s a measured and quietly outspoken rant at lacklustre opposition peppered with a gorgeous guitar break. Meanwhile, ‘I Only Ever Wanted To See You Fail’ rumbles with an Eddie And The Hot Rods pre-punk riff before dissolving into a tale of self-doubt and remorse, bemoaning others’ good luck. ‘Toxic Friend’ is from the book of the TVP’s Daniel Treacey with an upbeat chorus that smacks of all that was good in old school indie in a hail of fuzzy logic and guitars.

From humble beginnings as a home recording project, The Reds, Pinks and Purples has blossomed into a sporadic live unit with tours on both sides of the Atlantic and appearances at Pitchfork Fest London and Woodsist Fest as well as support slots for indie legends such as Destroyer, Guided By Voices, and The Feelies.

ANTIBALAS HOURGLASS

With Hourglass , Antibalas returns to its instrumental roots. Previous albums featured lyrics that addressed topics like patriarchy, climate change, militarism, late stage capitalism, oligarchy, white ethnonationalism, and the genocide of Native Americans. In this album the group rearticulates these themes, however speaking through melody and rhythm. “Once a song has lyrics, everyone who doesnʼt speak that language is on the outside. We use rhythm and melody to translate the emotions in the album and make it universally accessible,” explains the co-producer/founder Martín Perna.

The new album draws on compositions written by several current and emeritus members of the group. "Hourglass" begins with a plaintive and ecstatic tenor saxophone solo before digging into an intense 12-8 groove. The group pivots with “Lo-Life” highlighting the groupʼs ability to swing a lá Machito or the 1970s Ghanaian dance band leaders like Gyedu Blay-Ambolley. Others like “Solace,” “Escape” and “La Ceiba,” conjure echoes of the classic Lagos afrobeat sound, albeit spoken with a Brooklyn accent. “Oasis,” the albumʼs finale, is a step into a psychedelic unknown future, with a deep sense of liberatory funk eternally at its core.

On its original release, One Soul Now attracted widespread praise AllMusic com proclaimed, “It picks up where Open left off, retaining the tougher sound highlighted by edgy guitar work and a more rhythmic pulse Margo Timmins' vocals are hypnotically lovely as usual, merging with bluesy guitar riffs and emerging above the morass as the chorus kicks in", whilst Q Magazine dubbed the Cowboy Junkies “The hippest name in alternative circles”.

Since the multi-platinum success of their seminal 1988 release The Trinity Session – an album which helped set the stage for the burgeoning Americana roots music movement – Cowboy Junkies attracted an uncommonly dedicated international following which has remained loyal to the band. One Soul Now was arguably the most outward-looking album of Cowboy Junkies’ career upon its initial release, providing a perfect showcase for the core quartet of Michael (guitar), Margo (vocals), Peter Timmins (drums) and Alan Anton (bass)

In the ’50s, Ray Charles invented soul. In the ’60s, he re-invented country and gave it a global audience in the process. In the ’70s, he made the album that would be the purest fusion of the two genres he introduced to the world, Love Country Style

At his absolute peak as a singer and player and as musically open-minded as ever, Ray Charles included songs from the most revered songwriters in the progressive country scene—Mickey Newbury and Jimmy Webb—alongside tracks from his own A-list stable of composers, and a couple of country classics, all rendered as no one but Ray Charles ever could.

Rolling Stone called out his take on “Ring Of Fire,” saying that it “plummets deeper and burns hotter” than the Johnny Cash hit . . . and that’s not even the the highlight of this long out-of-print masterpiece, finally ready to remind fans of the modern countrysoul scene who did it first and who did it best.

Gasper Lawal

Ajomasé

Ajomasé is the groundbreaking debut album by legendary Nigerian percussionist Gasper Lawal Originally released in 1980 on his own label CAP, Strut are proud to now bring this unique album back to the racks.

Lawal’s style was forged through decades of high-level percussion work with the likes of Stephen Stills, Barbra Streisand, George Clinton & Funkadelic, Manfred Mann, Alexis Korner, Vangelis and Ginger Baker’s Air Force band. Dissatisfied with existing genre labels and production norms, Lawal began recording his own album in 1976 at Vangelis’ own studio in London’s Marble Arch before switching to long, drawn-out night shifts at Surrey Sound Studios, using downtime between The Police’s sessions for Outlandos D’Amour.

Lawal meticulously self-produced, composed, and overdubbed the album over four years, assembling an elite group of musicians from both Nigeria and the UK The instruments used were often hand-built, including a powerful one-of-a-kind drum carved deep in the Nigerian bush “This music is not about trends, about what is commercial or a “sound” of a particular moment,” explains Lawal, “it is about music to be felt, that gives pleasure. It is nurturing and meditative."

Although record executives didn’t know how to categorise Ajomasé, the people responded. Legendary DJs like John Peel and Janice Long gave it UK radio play – a rarity for African records at the time. Demand skyrocketed and, with Rough Trade stepping in to distribute the vinyl, the album found an international audience

In 1982, Peter Gabriel personally invited Gasper to perform at the first WOMAD Festival, leading to a new era of live performances and global recognition Yet despite its impact, Ajomasé has never been reissued – until now.

This new edition brings a spiritually resonant, rhythmically rich and genre-defying work to a new generation of listeners featuring liner notes by Gasper himself and audio remastered from original tapes by Whitfield Street Studios and The Carvery

85 Dollars An Acre Ossuary Her Turn To Speak Spoons Minode’e Pyrrhic Victories

Renowned Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg musician and author Leanne Betasamosake Simpson returns with Live Like The Sky, the highly anticipated follow up to her Polaris Music Prize short-listed album Theory Of Ice (2021).

Born in struggle, and written in response to a world engulfed in wild-fire smoke, fascism, colonialism, and heteropatriarchy, the album draws surprising influence from formative alternative musics (The Cure, Jesus and Mary Chain, Depeche Mode) in combination with a vital Anishinaabe worldview to create a fugitive space of reworlding and affirmation. Here are complex nuanced shorelines, where a newly developed alternative pop musical sensibility provides a counterpoint to lyrics of resistance and a powerfully emergent creative process. Working towards a reclamation of land, language, sonics, and possibility, Live Like The Sky records an expansion of imagination and relationship, an urgent and uplifting celebration of courage and resistance.

“This album is my pièce de resistance,” says Joshua Hedley of All Hat, his lively new collection of Western Swing tunes. “It’s all been building up to this moment. I feel like I’m making music I love more than any other style.” Produced by Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel—Hedley’s hero since childhood—the album brims with excitement, wit, and verve, as Hedley expertly navigates the tricky dance rhythms of this jazzy style of twang. It’s a sharp left turn in a career defined by sharp left turns, following close on the heels of his 2018 debut Mr. Jukebox, which explored ‘60s countrypolitan and established him as one of the finest old-school country crooners in all of Nashville. Released in 2022, Neon Blue jumped ahead a few decades as Hedley turned his attention to that muchmaligned period in country music: the early ‘90s, when a new wave of singing cowboy took their twang into rock arenas.

All Hat doesn’t try to update the style, because Hedley understands that it doesn’t need any kind of modernizing. It can sound as immediate and urgent and just plain fun now as it ever did. And he hopes folks will get up and dance. “At its core Western Swing is just dance music. Bob Wills didn’t play theatres; he played dance halls. The music is for dancing, and that’s what I wanted to come through on these songs. I just want to show people how big a genre country music is and how deep it goes. There’s such a diversity of sounds in country music. It’s not just one little box that everything fits into.”

JOELTON MAYFIELD CROWD PLEASER

Crowd Pleaser, the stunning debut album from Texasraised, Nashville-based songwriter Joelton Mayfield, is the result of nearly a decade of work and reflection. Written and recorded in the wake of personal heartbreak and years of questioning faith, the album captures Mayfield’s journey from small-town Texas church music director to an emerging voice in indie rock and alt-country. Tracked over three weeks in a converted barn near Alabama’s Mobile Bay, Crowd Pleaser brings together a patchwork of trusted friends and collaborators, with songs that lean into the raw edges of disappointment, doubt, and selfdiscovery.

Across ten tracks, Mayfield draws from the tradition of incisive Southern storytellers and country-rock bands unafraid to push boundaries. His songs wrestle with the hypocrisies of his upbringing, the unraveling of old beliefs, and unexpected moments of clarity. From the layered apocalyptic energy of album opener “Red Beam” to the quietly devastating hymn “Jacob Dreamed a Staircase,” Crowd Pleaser introduces Joelton Mayfield as a songwriter unafraid to confront the most difficult lessons he’s learned in his life and turn them into these songs meant to be shared like communion.

An all-new album from an all-new Bloodshot artist

Blaupunkt 5. Contact SIDE B

Still Life 7. Road Sound

• FOLLOW

Once called “America’s Best Krautrock Band,” Portland’s Møtrik has long since outgrown the boundaries of geography and imitation. On EARTH, their fourth full-length album, the quintet sheds genre pastiche and boldly steps into their own orbit—less homage, more evolution. This is krautrock rewritten for a strange, unraveling future: equal parts sci-fi ritual, motorik propulsion, and psychedelic philosophy.

Where early sci-fi pulp like Astounding Stories imagined plausible futures, EARTH inhabits a realm where machinery hums with feeling and cosmic logic collides with soul. Here, synths shimmer with stardust, rhythms churn like solar flares, and vocals drift like signals from a lost planet. Møtrik—Erik Golts (bass/vocals), Cord Amato (guitar), Lee Ritter (drums), Jonah Nolde (guitar), and Dave Fulton (synths)—channel krautrock’s pulse through a kaleidoscopic prism of cosmic textures, hypnotic rhythms, and alien clarity. The result is undeniable: EARTH is a modern kosmische masterwork, and the soundtrack to our accelerating, uncertain now.

From the tidal reckoning and cosmic purge of “Ultimate Drive”, through the glittering awe and breath-counting disorientation of “Weightless”—a mantra for motion and surrender in the face of microgravity—to the strut and Berlin-era Bowie swagger of “Flood-Tide”, EARTH moves through a universe of sonic paradox. The telepathic transmissions of “Blaupunkt” blur sensory boundaries, evoking cosmic spy music with a hypnotic, danceable pulse. “Contact” simulates intimacy through glitch and repetition, offering transcendence in artifice before slipping back into static. The cosmic solitude of “Still Life” paints in whispers, shadows, and light—sonic chiaroscuro like Caravaggio in sound—a memento mori on par with the quiet vibrancy of Modersohn-Becker or Adriaen van der Spelt’s still lifes. No fruit or vase here, only static, dust, space, and sound.

EARTH isn’t a concept album—it’s a constellation. Each song is a waypoint, a signal, a fragment of a larger transmission about identity, contact, and survival in the cosmos. Thirteen years in, Møtrik aren’t just referencing the genre—they’re rewriting it. It’s time to upgrade the superlative: call them what they are—the galaxy’s best krautrock band. Smoking safety cone and all.

TRAVELING LIGHT RAFAEL TORAL

DC948 LP/CD

Street Date: October 24, 2025

NO EXPORT TO EU/ UK, AUSTRALIA/NZ; ENSURE THAT THIS NEW MUSIC TRAVEL VIA LIGHT SPEED TO ALL OTHER TERRITORIES

From out of the dark, the crackle of feedback birdsong signals a return to the land of sound environments exclusive to the music of Rafael Toral. A year and a half after his epochal electric guitar album, Spectral Evolution, Traveling Light finds him sharpening his focus, moving boldly from abstract forms to concrete compositions in the form of a set of jazz standards. Based on Toral’s discography, this may seem an unlikely endeavor, but happily, Traveling Light transpires to be one of the major accomplishments in his long history, expressing these songs on their own terms through the unique listening lens of his music.

Rafael Toral on Drag City/Moikai:

Track List: Easy Living Solitude Body and Soul You Don’t Know What Love Is My Funny Valentine God Bless the Child

It’s nearly a century since the innovation that electrified the guitar, almost a century since the era of songs like “Easy Living” and “Body and Soul.” Since then, guitars and songs have been played hundreds of different ways by thousands of diverse individuals. After a century of progress, they probably should sound like something else again! And they do, as Toral sidesteps the traditional logic of how to play a song, moving outside the framework with which one would expect a standard to be treated.

Three decades ago, in the early years of his practice, Toral used the guitar as a generator, to create discreet texture and droning tones. Later, he abandoned the guitar entirely, focusing on self-made electronics to render his music, and the silence from which it came, with a post-free jazz perspective. For the music of Spectral Evolution and Traveling Light, Toral has combined his methodologies, radically expanding the space within their harmonies with his self-made machines, while engaging directly with his instrument and the chords of the material. The result is a listening experience of these standards, that remains “in the tradition,” even as the elongated harmonies seem to alter time such that, as Toral notes, “the chords become events on their own.” At points, the long tones animate the sacred ennui of liturgic music, the choir or the organ standing in for silent contemplation while rumbling the ground beneath our feet. Another echo of the concentric circling of music in time...

Further time-loops emerge throughout the duration of Traveling Light. In addition to Toral’s proxy orchestra of guitars, sine wave, feedback and bass guitar, Traveling Light features the sounds of clarinetist José Bruno Parrinha, tenor saxophonist Rodrigo Amado, flügelhorn player Yaw Tembe, flautist Clara Saleiro, who each guest on one song. One of Toral’s self-made devices incorporates a theremin another near-century old innovation in electronics conceived for use in classical music to modulate feedback melodies here. Meanwhile, this altered space is visited by canonical jazz sounds on four tracks, as clarinetist José Bruno Parrinha, tenor saxophonist Rodrigo Amado, flügelhorn player Yaw Tembe and flautist Clara Saleiro each guest on one song. In this new landscape, history and tradition are exemplified, like a toast to Earth cultures made on the alien terrain of Mars.

In every contour of Traveling Light ’s path arrangement, improvisation and production the spring of the old pours through the new in an unstoppable flow. This is the sound of life, a nexus point for the music of the last century and the music ever unfurling toward the far horizons of the next century.

MORE COLORS OF SOUND MAJOR STARS

LP

Street Date: October 24, 2025

NO EXPORT TO UK, EU, AUSTRALIA, & NEW ZEALAND; SEND MORE COLORS OF SOUND TO EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD

Out of the roiling miasma of timeless time comes a long-promised delivery from one of the constants of our era: Major Stars, and their new LP, More Colors of Sound. Fueled by overdriven guitars and gut-punching rhythm, these veteran rockers are stalwart in their delivery of trippy, psyched-out extremes. Over the 27 years since The Rock Revival (their Twisted Village debut), they can be counted on to come back around every three or four years or so, with something heavy picked up on their journey. This time, it’s been since 2019’s Roots of Confusion Seeds of Joy but what’s a few years in the larger scheme of things? Because ‘larger’ IS the Major Stars scheme of things, one that’s always cut deeply into the grooves.

YES. It’s been since the late 90s that Major Stars have been transmitting their signal. But even eternity wasn’t built in such an arc of time: Wayne Rogers and Kate Biggar have been crossing necks dating back to the 80s, with Crystallized Movements’ screaming psychpunk hybrids. Tom Leonard, Major Stars’ current third axeman, has been in the mix almost as long: Luxurious Bags’ amorphous low-fi (that’s him!) was released on Twisted Village too, and Kate and Wayne and him all played together in Vermonster. After the demise of Magic Hour Wayne and Kate’s proto-freak-folk outfit with Damon & Naomi the three of them formed Major Stars, with Wayne singing and Dave Lynch on drums. Which brings us… not quite to today, but, the More Colors of Sound lineup is as-was for Roots of Confusion Seeds of Joy: Kate, Tom, Wayne, Dave Dougan on bass, Casey Keenan on drums and Noell Dorsey singing lead.

More Colors of Sound had been earmarked as a title for nearly twenty years when they started work on the album that would finally bear its name. For the first ten Major Stars releases, Wayne wrote everything, but due to the way things were in 2020 and 2021, Tom and Noell wrote a bunch of things together, along with Wayne’s stuff. By the time they got to Gloucester’s Bang-A Song Studios, there was enough music for a double LP! A double’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream scenario, but once they’d done the overdubs, they skinnied it down to the 44 minutes here 22 minutes of each songwriting team. Ultimately democratic, not too long… you don’t see that much nowadays!

As ever (and ever), the crush of the three guitars as they riff with the rhythm defines Major Stars’ sound. The work of two writing camps has produced a song-centric focus on More Colors of Sound one, of course, shot through with distorted tones, fevered neck-wringing solos and several extended jammers but the production overall has a cleaner sound than its predecessor. That, plus the increased number of writers on deck gives the title a kind of kismet to go along with its historical weight, and that’s alright!

On More Colors of Sound, Major Stars find new hues inside the incendiary approach that’s launched them so ecstatically since early times; another jar of infinity captured with a quality all its own and it’s all in the grooves!

INNER DAY JIM WHITE

In March 2024, Jim White released his first-ever solo album, All Hits: Memories. Coming forty years into his career, it felt like some kind of breakthrough happening. His second solo album confirms it: Jim’s deep percussive intuition is fueling a new musical vehicle in his life. Inner Day finds him dancing ever more deftly with himself on an expressionistic set of drum kit and keyboard duets. Developing meditations on his personal arcana into expressive keyboard feels, he crafts parts as he would on the kit, further interacting with them on drums as well. Jim takes another big step on Inner Day, singing on two standout tracks, “Inner Day” and “I Don’t Do / Grand Central,” his words and voice in the mix for the first time.

A drummer of exquisite powers, great and small his Dirty Three compatriot Warren Ellis contends his playing long ago “split the atom” Jim’s capable of driving a band one minute, then slipping past accompaniment and into the cracks of the subliminal in the next breath. He’s got qualities deep pockets, a lovely sense of the moment that serve him and those he drums with well. His collaborators include Bill Callahan, Cat Power, Marisa Anderson, Daniel Blumberg, T. Griffin, Phosphorescent, Jess Ribeiro, Ed Kuepper and Mess Esque, alongside communal experiences in Xylouris White, The Double, Beings, The Hard Quartet and Dirty Three. And all that’s just in the past five years!

Inner Day is a state of nature: peace and tension, rest and disquiet aloft on the wind of Jim’s inspiration. Warren Ellis again:

“Mr. White has forged one of the most distinct and challenging careers in music. All heart and guts. Take no prisoners. His first solo album blew my mind. He’d cracked it. The mother fucker. The album we are all trying to make. Evasive, inclusive, single minded and edited with the perfection I’ve come to expect from Jim. [Inner Day] is a miracle. The man. The drums. That White style. The heartbeat of life.”

Working in conversation with his long-time collaborator Guy Picciotto on Inner Day, Jim travels further into the hypnotic relationships that they captured on All Hits: Memories. Here's another old friend, filmmaker Jem Cohen:

“I drove around listening to Jim’s new record. It fit so well, even when the things themselves didn't: the straights and turns of the road, fields and houses and industrial parks, the possible rain, deep spring greens and the greys of a parking lot, the rain when it finally came. It goes where it will, quite fearlessly but never demonstrative or showy about its risk-taking. I’d say the record’s a conversation Jim’s having with the world, one that isn’t about drums or being a drummer but, more expansively, about music as the spillway for feeling and experience.”

Jim himself adds:

“On my first album All Hits: Memories, I wanted to have a keyboard sound to keep the drums company as together they celebrated why some things just ‘hit’ the psyche, why some memories stick. Later, I found the notes wanted to move more and so on my second album Inner Day, that is what they do.”

What more is there to say? The music tells the rest…

JONNY FRITZ - “DEBBIE DOWNERS” PART ONE OUT OCTOBER 24TH, 2025

For years, Jonny Fritz traveled the world as a country music eccentric, maintaining the nonstop schedule of a road warrior whose giant-sized personality didn’t overshadow, but rather magnified his talent at songwriting. Then, one day, he stopped. Fed up with the economic burdens of the music industry, he took a long break from the recording studio and the road. Debbie Downers — not just a single album, but a collection of four interlinked records, each one featuring a different producer and a unique interpretation of the same album — marks his charismatic return. First up a the country record, the most conventional considering Jonny’s catalog, that Fritz recorded in Nashville with a group of Music City sidemen.

"I had an idea — a dumb idea, maybe, and I followed it through, making these albums exactly as I'd envisioned. And hey, at least it was expensive —" he says. "It's so easy to fall into a pattern of saying, 'Well, the label wants things to sound a certain way' or 'I'm not sure we can a ord this,' but I didn't want any of that to influence my decision making. I just wanted to stay true to myself. Artistic integrity is worth so much more than any monetary payback, so this project has already been a major success to me, simply because I haven't compromised or done anything conventional yet. I think that’s the key to success, actually."

Self-funded and independently conceived, Debbie Downers is a project fueled not by the music industry, but by a genuine love of music itself. Whether he's skewering his MAGA relatives ("Debbie Downers"), singing about the challenges of working at Walgreens with your roommate ("The Boss"), or sketching the portrait of a divorced father "trying hard to ignore the looks from the earth-tone moms" at the neighborhood playground, Fritz turns the everyday into the anthemic, creating a colorful soundtrack for blue-collar life. He's rested and rebalanced, back in the saddle after a long, voluntary break from the road. This time around, though, he'll be following his own path, not getting derailed by false hopes of pleasing the masses through convention, but rather aiming to please himself and his community of respected musicians. not

First time vinyl edition of the 2002 album by LittleAxe, the blues-infused alter ego of guitarist Skip McDonald, member of The Sugarhill Gang, Tackhead, and more, and musical arranger on a large swathe of the On-U Sound back catalogue.

“Adreamy, hazy cipher of an album that settles slowly and lazily over the listener, displacing his or her sense of time and space.Snippets of singers wafting ghostly out of the ether only to re-enter the mist and wind themselves around a slow, sultry, steamy rhythm, a heavily seductive mix that slithers around McDonald's awesome and understated guitar playing. It comes from the swampy underbelly of the Delta blues bible, and Adrian Sherwood's smoky, dubbed-out effects, loops, and echo chambers are everywhere, with sounds that come from out of time yet seem to belong rightwheretheyare.” Thom Jurek,All Music

Sleepytime Trio Memory Minus Plus Minus (Discography)

Solid

Sleepytime Trio was a post-hardcore band t hat formed in 1995 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Originally a side project of t he band Maximillian Colby, t he original trio featured Drew Ringo (guitar), Ben Davis (bass), and Jonat han Fuller (drums). The 3 piece quickly took off as t hey played shows around t he mid-Atlantic region; building a reputation for t heir volatile, emotional sound and unpredictable live energy. In t he summer of 1995, when Maximillian Colby abruptly ended, Dave Nesmit h joined t he trio on 2nd guitar and Sleepytime Trio, became a four piece.

They shared bills wit h bands like Shotmaker, Rye Coalition, Tristeza, Lungfish, 400 Years, Hot Water Music, Frodus, Regulator Watts, Boys Life, The VSS, Mens Recovery Project, The Great Unraveling and many more. Sleepytime Trio shows were notorious for exploding into controlled chaos. They were a cacophony of tangled limbs, busted gear, and a visceral sense t hat everyt hing might combust in a split second. 'Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them' is the debut LP from Irish singersongwriter Niall McDowell. A capsule of stories; inspired by the eclecticism of Arthur Russell and the performance art of Laurie Anderson, they sought to find a realm for their off-kilter country music to exist in, using analogue technology and working with producer Chris W. Ryan (TTSSFU, Robocobra Quartet, NewDad, Just Mustard). The result is a thoughtful meditation on the chaos of grief, the tribulations of the queer experience.

OVERVIEW

Originally released in 2011, Terminal Twilight came after a long hiatus for White Willow. After Signal to Noise, White Willow felt a little burned out, both as a band and from the whole prog scene. Jacob took a break to work on his art pop project The Opium Cartel. After that, he felt ready and eager to create prog rock again. This time the band decided to record and produce the album on their own.

The album was recorded in three studios: Jacob’s Dude Ranch Studio, Lars Fredrik Frøislie’s studio, and Mattias Olsson’s Roth Händle Studio. “Having Mattias back as a drummer for the first time since Ex Tenebris was fantastic. Before writing the material for this album, I had gorged myself on a lot of Italian prog rock, especially Le Orme. So I think a bit of that influence crept into the music. A very proggy album that we are still very happy with.” (Jacob Holm-Lupo)

Meticulously remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo, this is is the last in a series of six White Willow rereleases on Karisma Records.

Radiohead Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009)

STREET DATE: October 31st, 2025

A new live album that sees the band reflecting on their 6th album, Radiohead’s Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009) is comprised of performances of songs in London, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, and Dublin between 2003 and 2009. The album was mixed by Ben Baptie and mastered by Matt Colton.

Speaking about the new live album, Thom Yorke, who recently co-created the critically acclaimed Hamlet Hail to the Thief, a frenetic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, says:

“In the process of thinking of how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail To The Thief theatre production, I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs. I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played. I barely recognised us, and it helped me find a way forward. We decided to get these live recordings mixed and released (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves). It has all been a very cathartic process. We very much hope you enjoy them.”

keiyaA hooke’s law

STREET DATE: October 31st, 2025

After five years of navigating loss, grief, and anger, Chicago-born, NYC-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer keiyaA emerges in the light of reinvention and healing, shaped by years of solitude spent in the unending tide of mess and renewal, returning to share her findings with unapologetic clarity on her longawaited sophomore album hooke’s law, due out October 31st on XL Recordings.

Known for her genre-defying blend of jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and experimental music and penetrating explorations of Black womanhood and liberation, rich harmonies, and fearless experimentation, keiyaA reintroduces her artistry with the same emotional intensity and sonic innovation that defined her 2020 debut Forever, Ya Girl, arriving in the wake of her first theatrical stage play, milk thot.

KeiyaA wrote, composed and produced the music on hooke’s law over the course of 5-years and finished as she was working on milk thot. KeiyaA’s art is built on multivalence, on imagining future selves and allowing them to coexist with every past and present version of herself too. Throughout hooke’s law, keiyaA does the perilous work of deconstructing and rebuilding her ego so that no one else can do it for her. The record, then, is a document of self-interrogation as a means of survival.

keiyaA’s self-produced debut album received Pitchfork’s “Best New Music”, landed on year-end best-of lists from The New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian, and was later named to Pitchfork’s Best of the Decade So Far list. It also drew praise from artists including Solange, Jay-Z, Blood Orange, and Moses Sumney. The album announced keiyaA as one of music’s most vital new voices and producers, and gave her the access to expand on her creative vision—one that has since grown into a thriving garden of projects, performances, and collaborations, each distinct but rooted in her singular artistry.

FOREVER, YA GIRL (2020)

“An underground R&B classic… we’re going to be talking about the influence of this record for years to come.”

– Complex, Best Albums of 2020

“keiyaA’s debut album has a certain rawness that permeates whatever space in which you choose to listen to it. Her lo-fi R&B is marked by refined vocals, defiant spoken-word and spacious backdrops.”

– Paste

“The singer, songwriter, and producer’s philosophical nature comes through in her dense neo-soul music, which weaves together profound introspection with resolute self-affirmation.”

HEAVY COMBINATION 1966 - 2007

OVERVIEW

At what point does a record end and an altered state of mind begin? Where does all that caustic noise and ecstatic melody that’s been pressed in a record’s grooves begin to cognitively shift your perceptions and help lift you out of the mundane into a space to inhabit, an escape from the world outside?

Following all that sound will bring you to Tremor – the breathtaking sixth album by Daniel Avery. An inner world built from chaotic noise, transcendental ambience and voices that echo around it like pulsing transmissions from some distant ether world. All those sounds on Tremor sublimely flow and blur together to leave the listener disconnected from the here and now. It’s as close to magic as music can get.

“I’ve never had a more inspiring time making a record” says Avery. “This is a living and breathing collective. Since the earliest recordings, Tremor felt like a studio in the sky, a space in time through we could all pass. Every person on the record leaves their unique mark but the power lies in us all working together. It’s a beautiful lesson acid house has taught me: no one’s energy is more important than anyone else’s… especially my own.”

Tremor opens the door to The Kills’ Alison Mosshart , Walter Schreifels from Quicksand / Rival Schools ,as well as a slew of contemporaries in bdrmm , Julie Dawson from NewDad , yeule, Ellie , Art School Girlfriend , yuné pinku , and Cecile Believe

Tune in, turn it up, embrace the tremors and prepare to leave this place behind.

PHANTOGRAM NIGHTLIFE

Electronic rock duo Phantogram came out of nowhere in early 2010 with the release of their debut album Eyelid Movies (Barsuk), which was lauded from underground to mainstream. In the whirlwind year and a half following the album’s release, the band played nearly every major North American festival and regularly headlined sold-out shows on their own –stopping along the way for appearances on late night TV and drawing mounting praise from audiences, critics, and fellow musicians from ?uestlove to Kings of Leon to Big Boi (with the latter of whom the band went on to form the side-project Big Grams).

Nightlife contains the RIAA Gold-certified single “Don’t Move” and is a companion piece to the band’s debut – its title, in part, refers to the fact that it was written and even partially recorded in clubs and hotel rooms while on tour in support of Eyelid Movies

Barsuk is excited to reissue Nightlife on purple wave vinyl.

OVERVIEW

Bag of Max Bag of Cass is a joint work from Zach Hill and Lucas Abela. Hill, while primarily known as a founding member of Death Grips, is a titan in experimental music—a visionary drummer, master of velocity and compositional design. Abela’s practice stands alone in the world of free improvisation, forging entire universes literally from shards of glass. These aren’t songs so much as vast, textured fields. Here, noise becomes a sonic environment of focus and intensity. For all its volatility, the music holds an unlikely stillness. Hill’s rhythms refract against Abela’s sustained, splintered overtones, forming a labyrinthine architecture ever ready to ensnare you.

NICK SHOULDERS - “REFUGIA BLUES”

OUT OCTOBER 31ST, 2025

Refugia Blues, the fifth album from songwriter Nick Shoulders, is a record of big ideas and small, intimate moments. Rooted in the acoustic stylings of Southern traditional music, it finds the Arkansas native turning off his amp and stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer, singing in a voice that’s equal parts country croon, Appalachian yodel, and high-lonesome field holler. Shoulders’ interpretation of American roots music has always been more progressive and punky than the trucks-and-beers conservatism that passes for modern-day country, and Refugia Blues offers songs about climate collapse, radical anthropology, and generative disruption. It balances the macro with the micro, too, making room for love songs and personal topics, packaging humor alongside heavy insights. At once academic and accessible, Refugia Blues isn’t just a deep dive into southernness, but also into Shoulders himself. This is a raw, resolute version of American country music, stacked high with songs that go down easy but linger in the minds of those willing to invest the time.

SCOTT H. BIRAM

THE

DIRTY OLD ONE MAN BAND CLAWS

ITS WAY TO BLOODSHOT’S TOP SHELF

Barrel Select is Bloodshot’s highest designation, the albums that bubble up and foam over the rim of the pint-glass that holds the mighty Bloodshot Records catalog of defiant roots music. But there’s no froth on this album. This is about as raw and visceral as a hunting accident set to music, with Scott H Biram letting it all hang out in ways that we’re still recovering from.

This record sits right at the hinge of his career: the transition from selling tapes out the back of his van to a nearly legit record-deal. It’s Biram declaring himself to the world—grimy, uncompromising, and utterly alone in his lane.

The Dirty Old One Man Band is feral and alive, the sound of a busted man hammering his way out of death’s shadow and staying on the road to outrun its reach. And that’s where he remains to this day: Likely willing his van down an interstate as you read this and still a proud son of Bloodshot Records, this is where our paths first met and why will always have a place on the top shelf behind the Bloodshot bar.

“Not for the meek, Biram’s hardcore blues & country go down like cheap moonshine” —AllMusic

THRILL JOCKEY

claire rousay’s music cascades from a well of documented experience, reflections of the past that compose the present. A prolific multiinstrumentalist, producer, and composer, rousay gracefully crafts boundaryless music. From her frequent and acclaimed collaborations with artists like M. Sage, more eaze, Gretchen Korsmo, Andrew Weathers, LEYA, and Alex Cunningham, to her film scoring like on The Bloody Lady. From her own compositions to her solo pop work, rousay’s music is delicate yet powerful, carefully constructed with a casual intimacy. rousay collages a wealth of found sounds and field recordings with earthy strings, stately piano, and processed instrumentation, all of which trace the outlines of memories and distinct impressions and create a complex constellation of feeling.

rousay’s music has evolved from confessional to conversational and excavates the rich emotional essence of each passage. Her work as both archivist and adept arranger and orchestrator merge sublimely into deeply honest and engrossing music. On a little death, rousay’s blend of pop sensibility and compositional acumen turn abstracted sounds into tangible feelings, its warm, glimmering glow coalescing sensually with the darkness. The process of composing a little death felt like a homecoming for rousay after the more pop-oriented song forms of 2024’s sentiment. “sentiment was a different way of working that helped refresh my music making habits and usual flow,” rousay notes. “This record is a return to what I see as my core solo practice, a re-dedication to those methods of working which I’ve found most align with what I envision my music or sound to be.” Intended as a part of a trilogy along with a heavenly touch and a softer focus, the pieces on a little death sprout from a wellspring of tactile samples and granularly processed sounds. The use of sounds recorded from her life outside of the studio remains a throughline in her work. While the previous two albums used field recordings as the primary sound source or central figure in the compositions, here they act more as springboards, timbrally intertwining with live instruments like additional voices in a chamber ensemble.

She’s pushing her sound to a much more accessible place.” - NPR

THRILL JOCKEY

Holy Sons is the largely solo project of Emil Amos (Grails, Om, Lilacs & Champagne) Puritan Themes is his 17th album and his 4th for Thrill Jockey Records and a tentpole album in his wide-ranging output, including myriad private press LPs, collections of oddities, and conceptual series’. Puritan Themes’ relaxed vibes are influenced by the laid-back west coast rock sound of mid-period Fleetwood Mac, blended with a dose of psych distortion and imbued with the breeziness and ease of yacht rock.

Puritan Themes is a record that knowingly, barely fits into the modern world. When mixing the record in Chicago, everyday Amos skated through Douglass Park listening to podcasts about the inner workings of The Band, listened to 70’s AM radio while washing dishes and went to sleep at night to early Bee Gees interviews. The earliest concept of the record was based around the track “Chain Gang” which was an imaginary take on if Cat Stevens had smoked a ton of salvia and taken a much darker route within that world of dense, story-telling/messagebased songwriting. The track “Raw & Disfigured” borrows its name from the last Thrill Jockey Holy Sons record, in a referential move that’s stolen from the way Led Zeppelin separated the track “Houses of the Holy” from the record of the same name (once again harkening back to 70’s lore).

Everything is recorded, performed and mixed by Amos. To add some textural variety, a few studio tracks were included but essentially only feature the drums and guitar recorded in the studio while the rest was centered around Amos’ core practice of home recording. The album features Kelly Pratt (David Byrne, Father John Misty, Arcade Fire) playing and arranging the horns on “Chain Gang” In addition to guitar and drums Puritan Themes features staples to instruments to Holy Sons: mellotron, lap steel, the Akai MPC sampler. Notable is Amos’ obsessive and unusual approach to mixing, repeatedly bouncing down instruments, applying pitch-bending and re-rooming plug-ins that obscures many of his sound sources. His approach to production and arrangement takes cues from modular artists who build their own sounds with layers of effects. Amos stays true to his singular focus with Holy Sons, conjuring detailed atmospherics and otherworldly planes of sound through his deft skills as a home recordist and self-producer.

Puritan Themes steps out of time on purpose and reaches back to 70’s sounds in order to escape the machinations, as Amos sees it, of current music. The compositions aim to return to a more innocent ground floor when listeners had the time to sit with an entire album, contemplate the lyrics and let the vibes sink

MICK THOMAS’ ROVING COMMISSION

New Album Out GoComeBack October 31, 2025

The new album GoComeBack by beloved Melbourne act Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission is a song cycle about the allure of home - “GoComeBack” is a pidgin Indonesian term for a return journey - penned by one of Australia’s finest ever songsmiths (as three ARIAs with his former outfit Weddings Parties Anything will attest).

Recorded in Auckland at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studio with ARIA award-winning producer Steven Schram (Crowded House, Paul Kelly, Sans Cisco etc), GoComeBack is the follow-up to 2023’s Where Only Memory Can Find You which found its way to #1 on the AIR Independent Albums chart.

GoComeBack splits neatly into two halves:

‘Go' is side one - it takes you away, leaves you in a far off place. You catch a bus at dawn, by a submerged island you hear distant voices, you marvel at how mundane a supposedly exotic place can be, and how exotic a functional entity needs to be. You catch up with a band who went a-touring and never came back, you get your nails done by someone who wishes they were far away.

‘ComeBack’ is side two - it tries to see beauty in the everyday. A tram ride through a divided city, some wild birds in the airport food hall, a sculpture by the river and a small child in a Vietnamese restaurant. Mick sits on a pier in an obscure seaside town and wonders how he got there while some artists try their bohemian best to pretend their domicile is anywhere but a work-a-day Melbourne suburb.

Info:

In addition to past work in bands Speedy Ortiz and Grass is Green, Devin McKnight has long written his own music as Maneka, releasing his solo debut Is You Is in 2017. On 2022’s Dark Matters, McKnight set out to explore the full range of his experiences as a studio and touring musician, delivering a striking, unclassiable mesh of genre inuence through which McKnight deftly explored the anxieties of working as a Black man in majority white indie rock spaces.

On his 2025 follow-up, bathes and listens, McKnight focuses his vision on Maneka’s musical identity, resulting in a more grounded album that still tests the extremes of McKnight’s songwriting talent. Elements of shoegaze and slowcore are prominent, but engineer Alex Farrar's exceptional production (Wednesday, Snail Mail, MJ Lenderman) makes bathes and listens cohesive, yet still distinct from any one style. Maneka opens bathes and listens with a Pinback reminiscent verse on “shallowing,” alternating with heavy choruses before exploding with alarm-call guitar in the song’s crashing coda. “shallowing’s” huge ending sets up “dimelo,” McKnight’s crunched, faceripping ode to Carmelo Anthony (specically Hoodie Melo). “dimelo” is urgent and instantly enthralling, completely swarmed by distortion, with only faint squeals passing through its shroud.

Such extremes are a xture of McKnight’s songwriting on bathes and listens, and provide him a space to interact with his vulnerability — as on the album’s middlepoint “pony,” a softer moment of acoustic reection that retraces McKnight’s days in high school football, picking apart what it meant to be an outsider in a world where coaches put unreasonable all-world expectations on seventeen year-olds. Singles “yung yeller” and “throwing ax” are similarly introspective, the latter describing the necessity of acceptance over denial before tumbling into a restrained, anfractuous guitar solo.

The album’s ambitious denouement, “5225,” is a slowburning build around knotted guitar, steadily crescendoing to a moment of chaotic clarity that centers a boisterous, unexpected solo. “5225” momentarily steers bathes and listens away from its sonic milieu, only to plunge listeners back into the heavy, crunched distortion of the album’s closer “why i play 2k/land back,” concluding on a note that reminds us the land we call ours and pass on through legacy is all stolen. It’s declarative in a way that matches the stylistically focused nature of bathes and listens, the product of McKnight’s choice to allow his strengths to guide his songwriting, resulting in Maneka’s strongest work to date.

Luniwaz - Live: The Music of Joe Zawinul

31/10/2025

'Luniwaz Live' continues the success of keyboardist Scott Kinsey 2019's album 'We Speak Luniwaz' with this further exploration of Joe Zawinul's legacy - this time on a searing live recording. For accomplices, Kinsey chose his ace rhythm section from WSLbassist Hadrien Feraud and drummer Gergo Borlai - and a bold newcomer named Patrick Bartley Jr. on alto saxophone.

Kinsey augments the core band with guests Meredith Salimbeni (vocals), Pedro Martins (guitar) and Bobby Thomas Jr. (percussion) on two tracks each. According to Kinsey, "Meredith came to this music recently but she's such a great musician and contributes important melodic ideas. Pedro has a deep love and knowledge of all things Zawinul and plays some remarkable stuff on the two studio tracks. Bobby was a member of both the Zawinul Syndicate and Weather Report, and his additions are wonderful too."

Honouring Zawinul with originality and fire requires something extraordinary. Scott Kinsey's group did that nightly, but the fire was especially hot one night in Prague and we are fortunate it's been captured on 'Luniwaz Live'.

Press:

This music was always about improvisation. Kinsey, Borlai, Feraud and Bartley Jr. have deep and often clever conversations within their interplay. Much thought was put into the song selection and making it all connect and flow." - **** All About Jazz

Kaela Supraliminal

31/10/2025

Kaela is a genre- blurring singer, songwriter, multi- instrumentalist, and producer based in Los Angeles. Her debut solo album Supraliminal was released on Other Suns, the label founded by M83's Anthony Gonzalez, who remarked: "This album takes me places I've never been before," calling Kaela an "intriguing and fantastical artist."

Written and produced in her LA studio, Supraliminal is an immersive journey through ambient textures, experimental pop structures, and analog synth landscapes. The title refers to the psychological concept of information existing above the threshold of conscious awareness. "I'm interested in the moment something crosses that threshold," Kaela explains, "when a hidden truth rises to the surface, whether through memory, art, or intuition."

Kaela is also known for her long-standing role as a key member of M83, contributing to both live and studio projects since 2016, including the band's 2023 album Fantasy and its worldwide tour. With Supraliminal, she fully steps into her own artistic identity, crafting a deeply layered and visionary debut. At once cerebral and visceral, cosmic and intimate, it's a record that doesn't just ask to be heard; it asks to be felt.

Out on M83's new imprint Other Suns, this record grapples with questions of spirituality, technology, and their intersection. It is a dystopian landscape where sounds seem stretched, exhausted, resigned to echoing their own decay. The album draws comparisons to Blade Runner's soundscape reimagined by Oneohtrix Point Never, or a Philip Glass Koyaanisqatsi replaced by synthesizers.

Shad has built a career as one of Canada’s most consistent and versatile hip-hop artists. Since he emerged from London, ON in 2005, he’s been racking up critical and commercial acclaim, winning the Juno Award for Best Rap Recording for his 2010 album TSOL and being shortlisted for the Polaris Prize an unprecedented five times. But he’s not done yet. With his seventh full-length release Start Anew, Shad thematically tackles our collective reluctance to break out of our comfort zones armed with his trademark wit and thought-provoking bars.

In a storied career that has seen Shad branch out as a radio show host (CBC’s q), TV host (the Peabody and Emmy award-winning Netflix docuseries Hip Hop Evolution), new wave singer alter ego (Your Boy Tony Braxton) and now academic professor at the University of Toronto and Laurier, Start Anew’ s central premise is one that Shad has wholeheartedly embraced himself, completing a socially conscious trilogy that began with 2018’s A Story About A War and 2021’s TAO

Embracing a musical approach that evokes the playful soulfulness of his early releases, Start Anew is refreshingly and unapologetically direct, aligning with Shad’ s ongoing mission to spread love, wisdom and hope in an effort to inspire personal and societal change.

A THEORY OF /CLOUD/

KEY MARKETS: Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco

Inspired largely by French philosopher and aesthetics theorist Hubert Damisch, heavy experimental duo Shrine Maiden’s A Theory of /Cloud/ represents a very contemporary depth of intellectualism and poetry in metal Like Apparitions’ propensity for interpreting Georges Bataille and Diane Wakoski as forbidding walls of sound, Shrine Maiden are driven by a desire to enfold complex and varied concepts into music that is by turns crushing and effervescent

Singers / multi-instrumentalists –– and husband-and-wife duo ––Rachel Nakawatase and Ryan Betschart, as Shrine Maiden, weave grinding slow-motion riffs and howling vocals through dark ambient soundscapes. Echoes of post-goth ethereal bands like Lycia and This Ascension abound in the occasionally dreamy, chorus-soaked, strumming reveries –– but explosions of doom-drone and blackened transcendence recall The Body, Thou, and other contemporary mavens of the rich ecosystem of experimental metal genres. Indeed, with A Theory of /Cloud/, Shrine Maiden have confidently taken their place within that thriving ecosystem

A Theory of /Cloud/, as a whole, responds to Damisch’s idea that linear perspective, in its limitations, generates “an oppositional factor with which it interacts dialectically,” which Damisch termed “the cloud ” The band says: “We wanted to see how we could explore this idea sonically, where the cloud is our textured soundscapes, buried vocals, lyrics hidden within scream, our play with genre, language ” While this forms the record’s broader framework, individual moments throughout the record reflect on everything from weather and volcanoes to Roberto Bolaño and late-stage capitalism-induced anxiety and incorporate Rachel’s upbringing in the Hawaiian performing arts of hula (dance), mele (song), oli (chant), and pule (prayer) And through all of this conceptual complexity and aesthetic transcendence, there is also a celebration of the love that Nakawatase and Betschart have for each other

While terms like “dark” and “heavy” are aesthetically well-deserved, it might be best to think of Shrine Maiden’s work as something beyond these limiting terms Damisch’s cloud theory was, after all, actually about visual experiences and not musical ones And so Shrine Maiden’s work represents not only the crossing of genre lines and representations of love and anxiety interwoven, but also interpretations of aesthetic theories about one sense in the service of another A Theory of /Cloud/ is at times aurally brutal, but one is left with the sense that Shrine Maiden have set out in search of a more complex and involute kind of beauty.

BUFFALO TOM Sleepy Eyed Expanded Edition

LP: BBQ-2703-LP

File Under: Alternative Vinyl non-returnable

▶ CD + Double LP

Expanded version

Updated artwork

includes 6 extra tracks of demos and unreleased songs CD: BBQ-2703-CD File Under: Alternative

Beggars Banquet is happy to release an expanded edition of Buffalo Tom’s fifth album Sleepy Eyed, celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year.

Set for release on October 31st, on 2XLP/CD and digitally, the album has been expanded to include six demos that the band unearthed specifically for this release. All home recordings, “Hold Me Up” and “Don’t Blow Your Wind” are gorgeous, completely unheard songs that somehow didn’t make it any further than a demo. “Tangerine”, “Summer”, “Kitchen Door” and “Clobbered” are a window into how these Buffalo Tom classics got their start.

Sleepy Eyed has been expanded into a double LP, and the refreshed artwork includes new photos and images of ephemera plus contributions written by the band and producer John Agnello about the recording of the album.

Sleepy Eyed marked a turning point for the band. The making of their previous album, 1993’s Big Red Letter Day, was a massive, glossy undertaking, recorded in LA with huge producers. The band’s inclination for their follow-up was to bring it back to a more stripped down and raw recording situation. Bill Janovitz said, “I was thinking of Some Girls and Tonight’s the Night, and those electric Dylan records like Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, where you could hear instruments bleeding into each other, snare drum rattling from the guitars and bass, and off-microphone stuff, and even mistakes, where it just felt like you were in the room with the band.”

They found the perfect partner in this plan with producer John Agnello and the perfect place to make it – at Dreamland Recordings Studio in upstate New York. Tom Maginnis noted that “there were really no distractions, and we ended up spending long days into the night at the studio and just crashing at the house to sleep. We would do take after take to get the right basic track, so it felt like playing many live sets in a single day.”

The songs on Sleepy Eyed include an impressive opening trio of three of their most popular - “Tangerine”, “Summer” and “Kitchen Door” and are amongst many fan favorites. Their trademark harmonies, timeless songwriting and guitar fueled passion is perfectly exemplified on this release.

Buffalo Tom (Bill Janovitz, Chris Colbourn and Tom Maginnis) formed at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1986 - a breeding ground of post punk guitar bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies. The three longstanding bandmates recognize the achievement of their longevity as a creative unit - 10 albums, 40 years as a band. Nice work if you can get it!

The early 90’s were an incredible time for Shoegaze fans, and the 12” EP was the format that delivered the most vital music of the era. Usually just 4 songs, these EPs were released as quickly as possible after being recorded, and had tracks that were often not found on the subsequent full-length LP.

We here at Outer Battery are looking to bring back the heady days of the 12” EP, and what better band to do that with than Swervedriver!

Back with their first new music in over 5 years, with 2 tracks recorded with Mark Gardener from Ride and the other 2 recorded by YouTube star Rick Beato, The World’s Fair EP is classic Swervedriver, with Beatles-tinged hits like Pack Yr Vision and psychedelic freak-outs like The World’s Fair. This EP, pressed on orange vinyl, is not to be missed!
