Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

This Issue: Kurt DeLashmet, Label Manager & Co-Owner

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

My first real industry job was starting this label. I often think about how silly that is. I have always loved music, and specifically the independent music world, but for most of my life I never really thought of it as an option for work. Closest I came was applying to a job at Guitar Center and completely blowing my interview. I have participated in my local music scenes everywhere I’ve lived, including booking lots of house and DIY shows in Conway and Fayetteville in my 20s. Before Gar Hole, I was a sales manager for a wine and spirits distribution company for 10 years.

When and where did the label begin?

Me and recording artist Nick Shoulders started Gar Hole Records in 2020 while we were hunkering down during COVID. We had collaborated on releasing music in the past through a cassette label I started in 2018 called Tape Dad. We got to be friends after I put out his first two records, Lonely Like Me and Okay, Crawdad. on tape. After lockdown started, his music started taking off online and, long story short, we decided to start a grown up version of Tape Dad.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?

The label is based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, right at the start of the Ozark Mountains. The name “Gar Hole” partly came from a legendary swimming hole in this region. For those that don’t know, a gar is a type of ancient, armored, kind of creepy looking freshwater fish. They are all over the place in the rivers and lakes of Arkansas and the southeast. Gar are typically thought of as fish that are bad for eating, mostly because they have super thick scales and are hard to clean, not because they taste bad. They also can partially breathe air, so it’s typical to find gar in bodies of water where you wouldn’t find much else. Because of this, a “gar hole” is a colloquial term for a poor fishing or hunting spot.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

We jokingly like to call it “unamericana”, which I guess would be misfit and oddball country, folk, americana, and whatever else.

Someone recently told me that we put out “suspenders folk and country.” Not sure if that’s accurate. We do get a lot of the punk-tocountry pipeline folks. Like the folks who wear battle vests to the honky tonk.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

At first, starting the label was more out of necessity. Nick needed help capitalizing on his music’s new-found popularity and we were just trying to figure out the best ways to meet those demands. I feel like we have most of the mechanics down now, so it’s really about just continuing to push forward. We are really lucky to be where we are only five years in and I think the best way to honor those good fortunes is by continuing to take it as far as we can.

The other goal was just to use what we were learning and accomplishing and try to spread that benefit to other artists who were part of our music scenes in Arkansas and New Orleans: people like Chris Acker, Dylan Earl, Jude Brothers, and the Lostines. We’ve also gotten better at this over time and seeing the folks we’ve worked with from the beginning start to find real success is one of the things I’m the most proud of.

What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge?

I hesitate to complain too much about this time because Gar Hole is really a product of pandemic era music business stuff, but if I had to pick one thing it would be manufacturing. I will always remember the heartache of not having vinyl on the release day for Chris Acker’s Odd, Ordinary & Otherwise, our fourth release, and the disappointed emails from customers. So glad that’s not a thing anymore. Shout out to Echo Base in Athens, GA and New Orleans Record Press in NOLA!

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

I’ll say Maddy Kirgo’s Shadow on My Light, an immaculate indie-pop / alt-country record we put out last year. One of those records where, if it was just about how “good” the music is, we would have sold 100,000 copies.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

For Nick Shoulders’ new record, we are selling mouth bows. We’ve sold over 100 so far, which has got to be a world record.

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?

We’ve always talked about wanting to do some kind of traveling roadshow thing. Put together a house band and caravan around putting on big showcase concerts featuring a bunch of our artists and friends. Would be a lot more fun than buying billboard ads or something.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format?

We’ll always try to keep vinyl affordable for stores and fans of our artists. It’s a fine line of needing to make the money we need to make and making sure things are attainable for people who want to support. Philosophically, the latter is more important to us. I do hope CDs keep coming back. It sure would make things easier!

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

We try to be as environmentally conscious as we can. We are a lean company that doesn’t create much waste which hopefully offsets the fact that most of what we do is ship little pieces of plastic everywhere. Our office is also completely furnished with furniture I’ve pulled out of dumpsters around town, so that’s pretty good. Also, no AI.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Block Street Records in Fayetteville, Control Records in Little Rock, Euclid Records, Domino Sound, and Sisters in Christ Records in New Orleans.

DRY CLEANING Secret Love

Produced by Cate Le Bon, Secret Love started life in Peckham rehearsal spaces, all members – frontperson Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton and bassist Lewis Maynard – writing, playing and responding to each other in the room: in Dry Cleaning, music and lyrics form an inseparable, generative whole. The follow-up to Stumpwork evolved through affirming sessions at Jeff Tweedy’s Chicago studio the Loft and explosive ones with Gilla Band’s Alan Duggan and Daniel Fox at Sonic Studios in Dublin, taking advantage of the sonic particulars of each space, and finally with Cate Le Bon at Black Box in the Loire Valley.

Secret Love is the finest expression yet of the profound friendships that created Dry Cleaning. Here, the south London four-piece take their place in rock’s avant garde, catalysing the Reaganite paranoia of early 80s US punk and hardcore with the dry strut of Keith Richards, stoner rock, dystopian degradation, playful no wave and pastoral fingerpicking, while Florence’s delivery, meticulously calibrated to her bandmates’ soundscapes, asserts her in a lineage of spoken-word artists stretching from Laurie Anderson to Life Without Buildings’ Sue Tompkins.

MIZMOR & HELL - ALLUVION

The stories of Mizmor and Hell are, for all intents and purposes, inextricably intertwined. For twenty years A.L.N. (Mizmor) and M.S.W. (Hell) have been orbiting the same fertile creative circles in the Pacific Northwest. They've done stints as live/touring members for each other's solo endeavors and they've contributed their distinctive voices to each other's recordings. A.L.N. and M.S.W. even aligned their cathartic outlets for a now impossible to find Mizmor/Hell split, unleashed upon the world in 2014. A collaboration record like Alluvion feels as if it was always predestined.

The blueprint for Alluvion had been drafted long ago and it wallowed in obscurity, its memory swirling in the ether, patiently waiting for a rogue spark to manifest its existence. And, as luck would have it, when A.L.N. and M.S.W. once again found themselves in the midst of each other’s boundless creative universes, they were now prepared to undertake the monumental task.

A.L.N. and M.S.W. intend for the compositions on Alluvion to be used as a map to help navigate the listener through bouts of psychic distress, touching upon emotions both terribly familiar and wholly extrinsic. Pensive, tranquil movements combust into passages of absolutely soul-searing sludge. Suffocating, blackened doom bursts out of unknown crevasses; punctuated by the unsettling voices of beings doing their damnedest to claw their way out of canyons carved by mental anguish. It's a harrowing journey, but one that seeks to provide a necessary catharsis. Alluvion is meant to act as a lens into the mind's seemingly mystifying geography; a vessel for the self-exploration of the complex terrains of the human psyche.

Kyle M – Winter’s Wish

Stones Throw Records | STH2519LP

January, 9th 2025 | Alternative, Christmas

Winter’s Wish is a Christmas EP from Kyle M, the musical alias of actor, comedian, and director Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live, Y2K, Brigsby Bear). Mild Minds' landmark album MOOD was his critically lauded debut on Counter Records / Foreign Family Collective in 2020. MOOD is now available for the first time for NorthAmerican retail.

MOOD received a 2020 GRAMMY®Award Nomination, a 2020Australian Music PrizeAward Nomination, landed him on tour with the likes of Big Wild and Tycho, and has been ARIACertified GOLD

MOOD has also tallied 300 million+ cumulative streams and earned widespread acclaim while remixes poured in from Jacques Greene, Laurence Guy, DJ Boring, and more.

Mild Minds further solidified his position as a pioneering force in electronic music with his 2025 sophomore album GEMINI. His genre-defying approach has drawn comparisons to luminaries such as Bonobo, Maribou State, Caribou, and Four Tet, while maintaining a distinctly unique identity, further cementing his status as one of electronic music's most innovative and emotive voices.

Dictaphone are back with their 6th full length called „Unstable“. In the 25th year of the project Brussels born composer and mastermind Oliver Doerell is surrounded again by a lot of musicians & friends. Roger Döring is there, his clarinet and saxophone play has always been a trademark sound of the band - also Alexander Stolze‘s ghostly violins. The dark atmosphere and experimental sound of the new album is a reference to the 80s belgian art music scene, which Doerell had the luck to experience in his formative years. Minimal jazz meets musique concrete meets a postpunk mind. On this new album “Unstable“ more voices and vocals than usual can be heard - especially Helga Raimondi (who already sang on the last album “Goats and Distortions 5“) . As a collage artist she is also responsible for the visual side of Dictaphone - she designed the cover artwork and the visuals for the live shows.

The Brussels-Berlin-Teheran connection: Other guests on „Unstable“ are the voices of Kaveh Ghaemi and Ashkan Afsharian, who Doerell met during a modern ballet production by Modjgan Hashemian (2008). The trumpet of Shahab Anousha can be heard in the track “La fin“ - Oliver Doerell and Shahab Anousha also share the spoken words Project “Nouf ān”. For nearly 20 years Oliver Doerell is linked to the Iranian Diaspora in Berlin and the Dictaphone track “Rattle” from the classic album “ Poems from a rooftop “ (2012) has been a hit in Teherans underground scene since the beginning. Furthermore the title track “Unstable“ is a homage to Ian Curtis of Joy Division. The words of this piece are based on the setlist of Joy Divisions last show.

Dictaphone played more than two hundred shows all over the world (including festivals Mutek, Transmediale, Unsound , Benicassim and many others). Tauceti (Lilou Chelal) is a DJ / producer / composer from Lyon. As a DJ Chelal distills a dark, tropical and sensual techno with percussive and vaporous rhythms in her mix. She stands for a very particular elegance and a certain, clearly audible maturity, which makes her stand out. „Guanyin“ is her very first full length - where she transfers the elegance of her sound into a very personal and unique journey.

Tauceti about „Guanyin“:

I am pleased to announce the release of my very first ambient album on the Denovali label. This is probably the most personal record I produced so far, because it is in a way a tribute to my Middle Eastern and Asian origins. It is a hybrid and intimate object, at the border between futurism and cultural heritage, with a desire to approach a more contemporary environment at the limit of classical. I used traditional instrument patterns, sounds intimately linked to oriental instruments, all the while using my electronic touch composed of drone/ ambient and sound distortions. This is the result of a year of reflection and increased exploration of new frontiers in the studio, which has gradually evolved into a desire to make an album concrete. Composed of eight tracks, some of you may have heard some of them during my ambient set during the last edition of Nuits Sonores, just before Vail and Rodhad’s magnificent live performance. It’s a kind of homecoming for me, the very first tracks I produced years ago already being part of the ambient register. This is an opportunity for me to rea rm the multi-faceted aspect of my artistic project, drawing on various aesthetic registers, between ambient and techno. I would like to warmly thank the Denovali label for their trust here, and with whom I will have the chance and the opportunity to maintain a privileged relationship for the next years.

(Remastered Baby Pink Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE:

JANUARY 9, 2026

First we put out all of Fanny’s Reprise albums on CD…now we’re doing the same on LP! Yes, that’s right, Fanny fans—we’re finally giving the band’s 1973 album Mothers Pride its first vinyl reissue. All four Reprise albums have their champions among Fanny followers, but Mothers Pride is definitely the most controversial entry in the band’s catalog, as Todd Rundgren agreed to produce the album on the condition that he and he alone oversee the album mix. The result was a record that cemented Fanny’s popularity in the U.K. but failed to make a dent in the charts here in the States despite such classics as “Summer Song.” The two-page insert includes not just the lyric sheet but the rare promo flyer that accompanied some copies, and we’ve had the album remastered for its baby pink vinyl release. Another seminal ‘70s rock record from everybody’s favorite “forgotten” allfemale rock band!

STREET DATE: JANUARY 9, 2026

If you could actually hear an abstract expressionist painting, it would probably sound a lot like the work of Morton Feldman. And that’s no accident: Feldman hung out in ‘50s and ‘60s New York with Jackson Pollock, Philip Guston (whose work graced the cover of Feldman’s first album), and Robert Rauschenberg. Like the paintings of his visual artist peers, Feldman’s work emphasized tonal color over structure, rhythm, or melody, the traditional building blocks of music. It also employed the musical equivalent of painterly “negative space” with its use of silence and stasis; that Feldman and John Cale were enormous influences on each other will come as no surprise. So, it makes sense that Feldman would dedicate probably his two most celebrated compositions to two giants of the New York scene: abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, whose famous Chapel adorns this LP’s front cover, and writer and critic Frank O’Hara, whose own work drew inspiration from the same sources as Feldman’s. Rothko Chapel and For Frank O’Hara first were released in 1976 on a seminal album from the Odyssey imprint on Columbia Records; for its 50th anniversary and first LP reissue, we’ve had it pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records for the quietest listen achievable, using new transfers from the original master tapes. Profound, career-defining work that opened the door for latter-day ambient composers like Brian Eno to walk through.

TRUE romance MOTION

PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

(“ALABAMA WORLEY” TURQUOISE VINYL

STREET DATE: JANUARY 9, 2026

EDITION)

Though it was directed by Tony Scott, the 1993 film True Romance displayed all the signature themes and images of its writer, Quentin Tarantino, from its grisly violence to its B-movie homages to its gleeful amorality. And the same could be said of the soundtrack; alongside composer Hans Zimmer’s riff on Carl Orff (which itself was an homage to another violent road movie, Badlands), True Romance offered a playlist that smacked of Tarantino in its embrace of rockabilly (Charlie Sexton, Chris Isaak), grunge (Soundgarden), honky-tonk (Shelby Lynne), and romantic machismo (Robert Palmer’s take on “[Love Is] The Tender Trap”). Vinyl would seem a natural for such a “warped” soundtrack; and, for this reissue, we’ve crafted a custom jacket sporting production stills from the film. What’s more, this release of True Romance comes in turquoise “Alabama Worley” vinyl in honor of the sartorial hue she favored in the film! Consider this a colorful homage to one of the greatest cult classic films of all time.

Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta described Supremacy as an “all-out onslaught of completely adrenaline-charged, in-yourface brutality,” and who are we to argue (in fact, we’d be afraid to)?! Hatebreed came up through the Connecticut hardcore scene (they actually kind of invented it), and recorded acclaimed albums for the Victory and Universal labels before moving to Roadrunner for this 2006 record, which featured the debut of guitarist Frank “3 Gun” Novinec. Supremacy’s sonic assault took it to #31 on the charts, but there’s more to it than just piledriving riffs; Jasta’s personal statement (reproduced on the insert) is remarkable for its honesty and its quasi-Nietzschean philosophy, and the lyrics (e.g. “Mind over All;” “Supremacy of Self”) follow suit. FEAR FACTORY: Concrete

(Remastered, Limited Silver and Purple “Decepticons” Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: JANUARY 9, 2026

This 2002 album was the last of L.A. band Fear Factory’s amazing run of albums for the Roadrunner Records, but it was actually the first. Huh? Let us explain—or better yet, you can read the two sets of liner notes that accompany the package. Briefly, prior to signing with Roadrunner, Fear Factory recorded an entire album in 1990 with producer Ross Robinson. The band and Robinson had a falling out, but, ironically, it was a cassette recording of that album that got them signed to Roadrunner. Once Fear Factory blew up with the release of 1995’s Demanufacture, Roadrunner acquired the rights to the album from Robinson, but waited to release it until 2002, when the band went on hiatus and left the label. But more interesting than the story behind the music is the music itself. For Fear Factory fans, Concrete is an absolute treasure trove— half of the songs are new, while the other half showed up in rerecorded form on their debut album Soul of a New Machine (and especially sharp-eared Fear Factory fans will notice bits and pieces of the new songs that showed up on subsequent albums). Above all, though, Concrete sets it in stone that very early on, Fear Factory had perfected the heavy verse-melodic chorus formula followed by so many nu-metal bands to come. For this LP release, we’ve remastered Concrete for its pressing in silver and purple “decepticons” vinyl limited to just 300 copies. An essential piece of the Fear Factory legacy!

The last few years have been quite a whirlwind for Scottish pop duo The Cords. Sisters Eva and Grace take their cues from forebears like Dolly Mixture, Shop Assistants, Heavenly and Tiger Trap, reinvigorating the C86 sound with style and infectious enthusiasm. Since starting in 2023 they've released a cassette single and a Christmas flexi that garnered airplay and breathless press from around the International Pop Underground, and played with everyone from The Vaselines (their first show!) to Shonen Knife, BMX Bandits, The Go! Team and Camera Obscura.

Recorded over the course of six days with Jonny Scott (CHVRCHES), their self-titled debut album is some of the most vital indiepop we've heard in years, bursting with boundless energy, youthful confidence, lively melodies and most importantly terrific tunes. From album opener (and first single) "Fabulist" to the heads-down rush of "October," from the punk-ish thrill of "You" to the instant classic "I'm Not Sad," The Cords have crafted a debut that handily transcends their influences and shows their firm grasp of all that makes great, timeless *pop*. By the time the dreamy slow-dance closer "When You Said Goodbye" rolls around you can't help but have fallen in love with indiepop all over again, and the only thing to do is lift the needle, flip the record, and start it over.

FREEDOM RHYTHM & SOUND

BY

Freedom, Rhythm and Sound showcases the stunning graphic works of independently published jazz record cover designs in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and beyond, from radical jazz musicians such as Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and others.

This second Freedom, Rhythm and Sound book is a new ‘chapter’, featuring hundreds more unique, rare and beautiful jazz record cover designs. This book documents the continued development in jazz as African-American artists set out on new journeys to enlightenment, heading out into Europe at the end of the 1960s.

The artwork of these (often self-produced) record cover designs during this era reflected their radical agenda, spiritual awareness and singular search for musical and personal freedoms. From raw, DIY aesthetics to lyrical and poetic illustrations, sometimes containing futuristic worlds and ancient landscapes, the designs are always bold, strikingly graphic, and most importantly capture the spirit of the music, giving them a unique beauty.

The book also includes sections on African-American poets and writers, Civil Rights and Black Power Movement leaders (Martin Luther King, Malcolm X) and early musical pioneers (Yusef Lateef, Max Roach, Art Blakey and others), all of which helped influence and shape the world of radical and spiritual jazz from the 1960s and onwards to its rebirth today.

Since the 1980s, Gilles Peterson has been a pivotal figure in the club scene, renowned for his genre-defying approach to music with jazz at its core. As one of the UK’s most iconic DJs, he has spent over 40 years shaping music trends as a radio presenter, club DJ, producer, and festival curator. He hosts a flagship show on BBC Radio 6 Music and, in 2016, launched Worldwide FM. He is founder of the Worldwide Festival in the South of France and We Out Here festival in the UK. He runs the label Brownswood Recordings, dedicated to discovering and promoting new talent and bringing fresh voices to the global stage.

Stuart Baker founded Soul Jazz Records in 1992. For more than 30 years the record company has released over 500 records covering a genre-defying array of non-mainstream musical worlds – Jazz, Reggae, Punk, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, African, Gospel, Acid House and more.

In 2017, part of Stuart Baker’s jazz record collection (much of which appears in Freedom, Rhythm and Sound) was featured and displayed as part of the Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power exhibition at Tate Modern in London,

Reviews of the first Freedom, Rhythm and Sound:

“A remarkable book” The New Yorker

“If there can be such a thing as a revolutionary coffee table book, Freedom Rhythm & Sound is it a chance to wallow in the Afrocentric visual language of the non-mainstream black jazz vinyl of this extraordinary fertile and creative period.” Eye

“Like the uncompromising music they represent, all the covers broadcast a sense of bold, brazen ideology” Pitchfork

“A definitive account of a complex passage of cultural upheaval.” The Independent

“For decades, no one was sure how to refer to this extraordinary music. Calling it ‘fire music’ does justice to its incandescent spirit, still burning from the pages of a book that preserves the memory of a special time.” The Guardian

“These sleeves are the original independent legacy to America’s premier art form – Jazz. In terms of African-American cultural expression they are part of a long line of thought that was charged in the 1960s by John Coltrane, Martin Luther King, Ornette Coleman, Malcolm X and others” The Wire

“A hefty compendium of radical jazz cover art” Mojo
