It’s a year and a half since the release of Freedom’s Goblin. A winter of rain has buried the recent times of drought. Now voices from the garden cry of desire and disaster, but outside the gates, rebirth is happening.

“Our salivating makes it all taste worse,” croons Ty Segall in the first salvo of First Taste. He’s talking about us: how we’re the masters of our own destiny, tellers of our own prophecy, makers of our own sickened choices. It’s a warning, but this time, the finger is pointing back at him too. He’s one with us.

Contradictions are rife. First Taste is an introspective set after the extroversions of Freedom’s Goblin — yet just as steeped in party beats somehow, even as Ty trails through his back pages, reflecting on family, re-encountering pasts, anticipating futures. Feeling, like it was the first time, the duplexity of core truths. Lines of struggle wind through the songs. “My life is a mystery / I’d look inside but I can’t see,” as one goes — and yet, such promisingly oblique reflections act to unravel the onion, lifting the veil. Ty skates through oneness, self-esteem, the parents — all the joys of a rain-filled childhood — while reaching outward in the here and now, feeling for a shared pulse. To go on, we need to feel it.

These are serious indoor moods, but with Ty, there’s a moment that always comes, a joke or something to crack the bubble and let some air in. It all comes together with volcanic energy — who knows what it means? One disaster ends another; mudslides down the hills into gaping canyons, freeways blocked, the sky filled with smoke. Then we go on.

Meanwhile, the sounds — what are they?

This production is INSANE, far-out, stranger than known, tones and rhythms that expand before our ears. These colors are weird. Together, they float like a flag, flashing binary lines like sirens to our eyes. There’s tons of drums, and acoustic . . . . things of all kinds.

Horns, synth pads. Pianny. Boiling overtime, Ty’s creative juices suggested that First Taste be written and executed with some radical new instrumentation — koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, voices, and sure, a sprinkling of keys. And the drumkit(S!), a position Ty occupies whenever it’s heard on the left speaker, while Freedom Band drummer (and SO much more) Charles Moothart plays the kit on the right side. Those two get DOWN together.

Whatever the mood is, the pedal is pushed cleanly to the metal — and that means to the max of the lightest ballads ever, OR through the most raging rocks yet. Ty’s vocal prowess, always a highlight, sits in fresh relief against his mutant orchestra, spooling tension through some of his most patient songs, his feral scream in complete control. Taking us through it.

First Taste is arch, full of high-energy jams, with a thing in each mix always insistently different. Ty’s song design’s all over the place — not even a surprise anymore — but unlike the freewheeling feast style of Freedom’s Goblin, these twelve numbers form a tightly revolving cycle of song and sound that focuses thoughts. First Taste isn’t really the first for Ty, or you or me. But for the latest, it’s a remarkably fresh taste. Maybe it’s the first for today — and when tomorrow is today, then too.

In fact, among the many distinguished alumni of Miles Davis’ fusion bands, keyboardist Smith and his cohorts arguably ran with Davis’ stylistic breakthrough the farthest. In five albums stretching over four years, Smith and the Cosmic Echoes stretched the fusion aesthetic to embrace postbop modal and spiritual jazz, funk, rock, pop, and even the smooth jazz, quiet storm, and crossover genres. And if those latter styles raise your traditionalist hackles, Smith imbued all of his records with integrity, vision, and his unique spacy sensibiity; instead of playing it safe or commercial, he fearlessly paved a path for modern jazz musicians to follow (Kamasi Washington, for one, no doubt listened to these records at length). LONNIE LISTON SMITH AND THE COSMIC ECHOES: Astral Traveling (Limited Blue “Eternity” Vinyl Edition) For his 1973 debut album as a bandleader, Lonnie Liston Smith assembled a killer band of Cecil McBee on bass, George Barron on sax, James Mtume and Sonny Morgan on percussion, David Lee, Jr. on drums, Badal Roy on table, Geeta Vashi on tamboura, and Joe Beck on guitar. Such a multifaceted ensemble was perfectly suited to explore the spiritual jazz that Smith had encountered while playing with Pharoah Sanders (“Let Us Go into the House of the Lord” appears here and on Sanders’ 1970 album Summun Bukmun Umyun which featured Smith), all presided over by Flying Dutchman label owner and former John Coltrane producer Bob Thiele. For its first vinyl pressing since the late ‘70s, we’ve re-created the original gatefold artwork with Nat Hentoff’s liner notes, and pressed up 1000 copies in limited edition blue “eternity” vinyl. “I learned how to play music by ear, and just haven’t learned how to read music since,” says Tallent. “I would listen to the popular music of the day back then. My favorite was Buddy Holly. And I would mimic what he played on my cheap guitar.”

Step forward a few years later and Garry becomes a member of Bruce Springsteen’s The E Street Band It wasn’t until 2016 that Tallent decided to step out of his comfort zone and finally become his own boss with the release of his first solo album, Break Time.

He jokes that it took him 65 years to put the album together, and when asked about it, he seems uneasy and looks away. When his gaze returns, so has his confidence and the realization that there’s no need to be anxious.

Since Break Time, Garry has been working on his second solo release, MORE LIKE ME. More Like Me is Garry’s homage to the sound of the mid-’60s; the sounds he grew up and learned by ear on his cheap guitar. He hopes you like it.

“The deep southern soul that grounded Garry’s musical life and his musicologist’s knowledge of rock history has always made his job as my bass player somewhat limiting for him,” says Springsteen.

“As a producer and now as a solo artist, it’s been a pleasure watching Garry come into his own and find the audience his talents so richly deserve.”

Prior to releasing records under his own name, Adam Topol built a considerable career for himself playing drums and percussion with Jack Johnson, as well as working with musicians like Joey Santiago, Ziggy Marley, David Gilmour and Jimmy Cliff.

Cuando is his newest full length. A collection of moody folk pop that merges his California indie roots and his passion for Latin rhythms.

Pairing up with musician/producer Matt Costa on Cuando allowed Topol the breathing room to explore these broad musical influences that were beyond the scope of some of his other peers. The two connected over a mutual taste for artists like The Cure, The Dirty Three, PJ Harvey, Spacemen 3 and The Velvet Underground, and within that shared musical language they were able to explore the occasional lyrical and thematic darkness of Topol’s work while still keeping the songs on the record fully rooted in their natural sweetness and emotional depth.

When Francis Lung describes his new album as sounding “like a short Mancunian boy single-handedly trying to incite Beatlemania” he’s really not too far wide of the mark. Released later this Summer, Lung’s much-anticipated debut album ‘A Dream Is U’ is both bold and enthusiastic, a kaleidoscopic journey informed by the greats but also one that is wonderfully enigmatic, the sound of a multi-instrumentalist tying together all manner of influences into one beautifully cohesive album.

Following on from the home-recorded Volumes 1 + 2 EPs, which contained titbits written during his time in Wu Lyf, ‘A Dream Is U’ is the first fully-realised Francis Lung record, a studio undertaking brought to life with producer Brendan Williams (Dutch Uncles, GoGo Penguin), a colourful patchwork of vision and ingenuity. “Before we started recording I knew exactly what the arrangements were in my head” Francis says, reflecting on the time spent devising his new work. "It was kind of my mission to capture everything as it was in my imagination”.

Touching upon the universal themes of addiction, faith, and love in all of its confusion, ‘A Dream Is U’ is a collection of characters and stories that plays out something like a Harvey Pekar comic strip; an obsessive chronicle of daily lives twisted into new shapes by the unique mind and manners of their narrator. With flashes of striking colour and an ever-present wry smile, Francis Lung has created a debut album that drifts between simple acceptance and exuberant yearning for more. “My favourite part is when it talks about escaping to another universe,” Francis says of one song in particular, Unnecessary Love. “Although it’s a doomed and impossible dream, it’s amusing to me that if we survive long enough it could be a real possibility.”

At times boisterous and radiant, elsewhere contemplative and brooding, ‘A Dream Is U’ feels like being awake in dreams, like stepping outside of the daily rotation; like shadows leaving their dancing bodies to waltz away to their own tune.

Durban gqom ambassador DJ Lag and London-based Okzharp combine over four club heavy tracks rooted in their long-term long-distance connection, the EP’s title originating from the Durban nickname for the local clubs where much early gqom-style music was played.

Opener ‘Now What’ layers a wooden percussion scraper with a ticking cow bell and chants. Set at a slightly faster pace than most gqom, the track harbours a dark energy at its core generated by a low rumbling background synth and pitch shifting claps.

‘Steam One’ - inspired by DJ Lag’s set at Hyperdub’s club night Ø after he brought the heavy steam room vibe - has a slow and entrancing build up with a subtle melody layering on stabbing syncopated kicks, leading up to a woozy synth breakdown. “We were inspired by that moment in the club when things get hazy and bendy and glowy. It has South Durban via South London DNA, so inevitably there's a heavy kwai-gqom vibe with a grimey funky London twist running through it”.

‘Nyusa’ opens with a grinding acidic bass line overlaid with a metallic and gravelly melody with suppressed chants. Sharp kicks drive the track leading up to a wobbly synth breakdown and back up synth stabs raising the energy. Finally, ‘Sambe’ pairs menacing strings with a steel drum melody, displaying characteristics of both funky house and gqom in a subtle meeting of the two styles.

‘Steam Rooms’ is a collection of dancefloor heaters set to make the club sweat, the amalgamation of a London / Durban link up reflecting both producers environments and sound palettes for icey cold gqom tracks with funky house shadings.

Ziúr first made stirs when she remixed Peaches “How You Like My Cut" from the totally NSFW but incredibly fun ‘Rub’ LP. She then Exploded on to the scene with her debut club vibe Taiga EP on Infinite Machine earlier this year.

Ziúr has come a long way from her experimental noisy punk band ‘Sissters’. Punk vibes still run through the dark and bass-heavy sound of Deeform EP though. Her use of environmental noises, dogs barking and the like, are evocative of cityscapes and dimming lighting when the streets meet dusk. “My testing ground [for my own music] is when I work at a venue and I do a sound check,” she explains. “If people freak out, then I know that it’s a good track.”

Back with the heat, Chicago native DJ Jana Rush kicks off Objects Limited’s 2017 with her debut album ‘Pariah’.

Jana received attention for her mind-bending drum acrobatics on last year's ‘MPC 7635’ EP under the name JARu also released by Objects Ltd. We kick off with ‘Midline Shift’ whose breathy, clipped erotic vocals intertwine with a pulsing bass and dry 808 rims creating a shimmering robotic effect. Moving on, the frantic ‘Beat Maze’ confuses the mind with white noise rushes and interlocking snares. Changing the scene, ‘Divine’ is sweetly soporific and charming, a beautiful, almost eerie track. The pace picks right back up with ‘??? ??’, whose warbling jazz clarinets cut into a juke bounce. The stripped back beats of ‘Break It’ give one room to breathe before the croaking bass and distorted acid of ‘No Fuks Given’. ‘Old Skool’ is exactly what you'd expect, its sample syncopated around a feverish rhythm throughout. Both ‘Rapid Fire and ‘Acid Tech 2’ are bangers, hitting you deep in that sweet spot. Jana brings it back down with ’CPU’'s computer noises and sub bass hits. ‘Chill Mode’ gives time for reflection after all that fire, but its no ambient track, theres still that ChiTown vibe. We finish with ‘Frenetic Snare’ whose Amen breaks will have Brits thinking of jungle, but it's a different beast altogether.

Deadbeat Beat slowly took shape as the natural extension of a friendship begun in high school by drummer/vocalist Maria Nuccilli and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Alex Glendening. Always at shows, hanging out, killing time and absorbing music, the two moved through early projects and various members coming and going before solidifying Deadbeat Beat with the inclusion of bassist Zak Frieling. By that point the band began finding their legs at shows in Detroit and through a series of sporadically self-released demos, EPs and singles.

In a scene of restless loners, everyone’s in at least a couple bands. While Deadbeat Beat actively percolated, Maria’s lockstep drumming kept time for longtime candy-psych heroes Outrageous Cherry and Alex played with trashpunk stalwarts Tyvek and filled in on bass and guitar for Saddle Creek’s Stef Chura and Richard Davies’ recently reformed iteration of The Moles. Even immersed in a wildly creative community Deadbeat Beat stayed on a different path, set apart by complex songwriting that drew from more internal perspectives.

While taking notes on the blacked-out guitar scuzz of their friends and neighbors, there was equal time spent dissecting key records by Kevin Ayers, La Düsseldorf, Joni Mitchell, Julian Cope, The Clean, and a whole litany of rainy pop music. Musically varied and lyrically congruous, How Far finds the band at the strongest voicing of this strange nexus, one spawned from rough nights at shitty dive bars as the emotional foundations for soaring pop songs that nervously bump into one another. Largely a reflection on asserting and maintaining a queer identity in an almost completely straight crowd, Glendening’s songs hit at the gut level — either doused in syrup like the harmony-heavy “You Lift Me Up” or stretched into an anxious infinity like “Tree, Grass & Stone,” the album’s extended freak out jam that still feels like a confessional indie pop song.

Recorded in Detroit’s North End neighborhood by Jeff Else and mastered by Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good to Me), How Far came together in between multiple self-booked tours, including dates with bands like Guided By Voices, Anna Burch, Tacocat, Bodega and Protomartyr.

While The Allman Brothers Band delivered their iconic, melodic jams and FEAT SET U PERF ORMA RING Skynyrd somehow made the confederate flag “cool” again with their dual guitar attacks, NCES FROM CHIC Blackfoot was an entirely different animal. Frontman Rickey Medlocke held direct ties A G ATLA O, to Lynyrd Skynyrd (he was their original drummer and is featured on their first album).

Walker and Jackson Spires, WOR TH alongside Charlie Hargrett to form Blackfoot. Unlike Skynyrd, however, or The Allmans or Molly Hatchet for that matter, Blackfoot brought something different to the table: Metal.

Fused with their Southern imagery and staunch Native American image, Blackfoot churned through every record sporting the clear influences of bands like Deep Purple and Sabbath. This CD contains four superb, previously unreleased, live performances by Blackfoot, both taken from FM radio broadcasts between 1980 and 1985. YungMorpheus and Fumitake Tamura (aka Bun) present Mazal, their first collaborative album for Leaving Records.

After meeting online through a mutual respect for each others' work (YungMorpheus' 44 Laws of Mentalizm and Fumitake's Mudai releases with Dakim for Leaving,) the two linked up at a brief 2017 Low End Theory performance and then began trading files back and forth over the next two years. Mazal, its title taken from a Japanese word meaning "a mixture of things," is the result, a cohesive yet varied album documenting stressful trials, psychedelic endeavors, and copious inhalations of marijuana. Veering from violent fantasies of societal upheaval to blunted musings on religion and politics, YungMorpheus' lyrics uncannily inhabit the twisted, pitch black backdrops that Fumitake conjures. Hypnotic chants materialize as blunted hooks which weave through the abstract beats like sun rays in a thick fog of smoke.

Fumitake's artfully experimental beats provide an exquisitely warped foundation for the project. Of his composition process, Fumitake writes "I wanted to make music that I haven't made before. For example, I would subtract some sounds to make the song unbalanced or unstable, and then I would look for new sounds to re-balance the track in a different way. Also, because the rapping is dynamic, I wanted to keep the beats minimal. I tried to make a new kind of feeling by balancing those two elements." YungMorpheus writes "There’s a lot of different sonic textures in there that I usually don’t find myself gravitating towards, but it felt fire to step outside of a lot of unnecessary comfort zones." With a nimble flow and a simmering mistrust, YungMorpheus adapts to each new lawless atmosphere with trenchant lyrics full of cutting observations on American life. The album's first half is steeped in a persistent, paranoiac dread in tracks like the spaced, densely packed "Blunted” and “Lastdays Ashtrays,” while the back half tackles more earthly matters on funkier cuts like "General Barca" and the jazzy, tranquil interlude "Stay Twistin'."

Mazal stays grounded by the struggles relayed by YungMorpheus. He writes, "I feel like most of these joints are snapshots of moments from that time period; some joints get recorded during days where you feel real flexed up and others when you're burdened by the nature of maneuvering a social situation that was inherently built to your detriment. My grandmother passed during the period of recording of this project and that shaped a lot of content unintentionally but naturally. Shit like identity politics ... most especially in relation to being a Black person in Amerikkka ... disillusionments, triumphs, you know, life 'tings."

Eartheater has shared stages with acts that include Jenny Hval, Objekt, Amnesia Scanner, Black MIDI, and Juliana Huxtable. In June 2019, she embarks on Fracture Patterns, a nine date tour of the UK in collaboration with video artist duo Semiconductor. The Fracture Patterns performances represent an original commissioned work by the Outlands Network, and find Drewchin providing a live soundtrack and performance along with Semiconductor’s multi-channel video works.

styles and cycled through a diverse menu of genres, while she has introduced her music to scenes and new contexts all over the world over years of international touring. With Hausu Mountain’s reissue of Metalepsis, appearing on vinyl for the first time with updated artwork, we travel back five years to a period of her work where you would more likely find Drewchin’s three-octave voice swooping through gorgeous cascading melodies as she fingerpicks through ornate chord progressions on her acoustic guitar, rather than pouring out lacerating noise texture and technoid beat structures from a pair of CDJs. The idea that these two (of many) sides of her project are at odds with each other, however, is a total fallacy, as Eartheater’s holistic practice remains in a state of constant recombination and willful juxtaposition. Her recent sets have come to balance her heavier post-club material with a reincorporation of long passages of stripped down voice-and-guitar performance. With this in mind, a reconsideration of Metalepsis could not come at a better time.

Tracks like the majestic “Homonyms” and the stripped-down finale “Infinity” float the closest to legible structures in keeping with folk artists like Vashti Bunyan or Linda Perhacs. Drewchin’s songs latch into temporary cycles for a few stanzas before jetting off into one-off flights of harmony that stand behind her soaring vocal lines. On “Homonyms,” she winds her way through a labyrinth of tumbling melodic figures that range from tongue-twisting, almost rapped mid-range cadences to bursts of color in the highest of falsettos. Drewchin tries on hard-effected belting closer to 90s alternative rock (“Youniverse”), layered wordless coos and chirping vocalizations (“Macro EV”), and pensive spoken-word whispers (“The Internet is Handmade”). Her lyrics toy with themes of humanity’s increasing integration with technology, with our tiny role and self-perception in a vast universe, and with the boundaries between the imagined dreamworld and the (u)(dys)topia expanding before us. For all of her mastery of voice and traditional instrumentation, Eartheater’s omnivorous, collage-like approach to production pushes Metalepsis beyond the limits of singer-songwriting and out into the deep end of modern electronic experimentation. Shorter sketches like “View Point Strata” and “Youniverse” stand as miniature flights through contrasting sound sources and broken anti-structures. The chirps of Drewchin’s pet birds join with peals of atonal violin, while a jovial verse by an anonymous Russian rapper arises out of a sea of garbled, heavily processed vocal fragments.

Even the tracks that skirt closer to more conventional forms play host to detailed electronic backdrops of percolating percussion patterns, sliced and looped synth formants, and swathes of pure synth texture.
