What was the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic, and is it still a challenge? Finding funds to keep the label running was and is the greatest challenge. How would you describe the average fan of the label? There is no average. Everyone’s a freak. But really – people who cherish deep cuts, people who are offbeat, deep listeners. We have to take up the counterculture.
How did you personally get started in the music industry? John Carlin’s entry into the music industry began with his background as a curator, professor, and art writer, which led him to cofound the non-profit Red Hot Organization in 1989 to raise money for AIDS charities. His work with Red Hot, which used music and art to fundraise, gave him extensive experience and connections in the music and film worlds, and his involvement in projects like Red Hot + Blue established his reputation as a powerful industry figure. When and where did the label begin? New York City circa 1990. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? Our projects gather artists from all over the world. We like to use our releases to educate people on health crises and solutions in specific areas, and have done that with our Red Hot + Rio series (Brazil), and Red Hot + Riot (Africa). Red Hot still has a New York spirit about it that does run through our releases – politically speaking we’re tuned in to the New York pulse of things. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? We’ll say the style is ~luminary. Our albums have gathered the most progressive minds in hip-hop, experimental jazz, bossa nova, folk, indie rock, and ambient music. Most artists on Red Hot records are interested in eclipsing pre-conceived notions of genre. We like to find what’s happening in the moment. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Red meant anger and blue meant sadness when Red Hot + Blue was born in 1990. Our friends were dying of AIDS in New York. Anger is motivation. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? It would be called TRANSA and it would be geared toward the music trans people are making that later defines what’s popular. (We are kind of doing this with the TRANSA universe. There’s another album on the way.) How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When the label began, it was possible for us to use music to raise large amounts of money to get people access to healthcare. Now we are focused on raising awareness with our music and using each release as a way to galvanize artists and others who care about the same things we do.
Where do you go to search for new music? We talk a lot about the state of music journalism, and are always looking for more outlets like the Hearing Things, the project of Pitchfork exiles. And we’re lucky to work with interns who make our world bigger with recs and exciting leads. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? The best marketing or promotion was not being able to use Nirvana’s name for No Alternative. It basically drove the project to have the secret Nirvana track in 1993 at the height of their fame. If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? We really want to use disruptive ways outside of the traditional digital marketing avenues to promote our releases. One example would be an art campaign for public transit stations; collaborating with fashion brands is also very aligned with what we’re working on. What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? John Carlin: The Talking Heads album Speaking in Tongues (featuring Robert Rauschenberg’s collage on clear discs – in a transparent plastic case not unlike TRANSA’s case. How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format? Vinyl is a way to treasure music. People still respond to that. CDs are items of nostalgia for Gen Z listeners. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? The way to market music in public has completely changed. We put campaigns on billboards in the early ‘90s and ran TV specials that people could stumble upon. Listeners curate their own experiences now and the ability to stumble upon music and art outside of one’s comfort zone is hard to come by. We are looking for new ways to do this. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? We want to be remembered for making great music for a great cause. We’re pleasantly surprised that people remember what we did make, many worlds ago.

DAVE DOUGLAS FOUR FREEDOMS On Four Freedoms, trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas convenes a remarkable new quartet including the brilliantly inventive pianist Marta Warelis, propulsive bassist Nick Dunston, and the wildly swinging Joey Baron on drums. Douglas channels President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 “Four Freedoms” speech - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear - into a compelling new musical project. The ensemble serves as an analogy for a functioning society: four distinct voices coexisting, conversing, and creating through improvisation. Balancing urgency with playfulness and joy, Four Freedoms is a celebration of freedom and collaborative spirit. Four Freedoms was recorded during the Getxo Festival in the Basque Country of Spain, in July 2025. On their powerful, cinematic new album, All Tied Together, the multi-awardwinning Irish band Ye Vagabonds deliver deeply evocative original songs infused with memory, tribute, and gratitude. Rising from the ashes of the 2008 economic collapse, the Mac Gloinn brothers – Brian and Diarmuid – first performed in the streets together as buskers.They took on the moniker Ye Vagabonds while creating now-legendary music nights and community-building events in their native Carlow, and later in Dublin. While initially achieving renown as purveyors of traditional music mixed with folk-based originals, the Mac Gloinns have increasingly focused on honing their own material. Ye Vagabonds have since evolved into a robust collective – a sonically unique ensemble featuring layered acoustic and electric guitars, trumpet, upright bass, Moog synthesizer, harmonium, bouzouki, fiddle, and the blood harmony of the siblings’ distinctive, multi-hued voices. All Tied Together was recorded almost entirely live in an old Galway house, with acclaimed producer Philip Weinrobe (Big Thief, Adrienne Lenker) at the helm. The dynamic arrangements are credited to a group of (up to ten) musicians. No one wore headphones. The brothers also cite fiction writers George Saunders and Claire Keegan as particular inspirations. In All Tied Together, Ye Vagabonds render the unavoidable things in life as a cause for singing.That singing is best done together in a room, where the magic of a well-wrought song defies loss and shadow, and people, places, and dreams live in the light again.

Barry Walker Jr. is a pedal steel player and guitarist whose roots in Americana, Country and Folk traditions influence his melding of minimalism, ambient and spiritual music. The Portland-based instrumentalist is also a member of the Rose City Band, known for his gorgeous phrasing and deft interplay with guitarist Ripley Johnson. On Paleo Sol, Walker demonstrates his singular voice as a pedal steel player and composer. Evoking the American western ranges and basins, the album embodies a longer, geologic view of time that patiently marvels at the ripples of change throughout lifetimes and ages. Walker is joined on Paleo Sol by drummer Rob Smith (Rhytion, Pigeons) and bassist and Mouth Painter bandmate Jason Willmon (Fruited Planes). Paleo Sol’s tranquil landscapes glide, built on warm finger-picked guitar figures and pedal steel swells coupled with deft percussion and bass touches by Smith and Willmon respectively. The trio plays with exceptional fluidity either completing each others phrasing or working together to build momentum. Smith notes: “The drums are not keeping time as much as evidencing its elasticity, mixing into the other instruments, changing phase states.” Every gesture on the album is rich with intention, moving with grace and playing with timbre and time. “In human reckoning, the essence of the solid earth is mostly still. He and neighbor Chase Chafin formed the group after graduating high school in 2013, adding guitarist Bus Shelton soon afterward; drummer Justin Louthian, keyboardist Tim Hall, and pedal steel guitarist Noah Patrick later rounded out the lineup. 49 Winchester released their eponymous debut album in 2014, a record anchored by ten original songs from Gibson. The group then set out on the road, supporting the album and building an audience through constant roadwork. Then, In 2018 the band released their second album titled, The Wind. The band continued to tour on the road with crowds growing along the way. The fun didn’t stop there. Ty’d played most of the parts on the album, excepting some key drop-ins from close associates, including Wand’s Cory Hanson and Evan Burrows, The Cairo Gang’s Emmett Kelly, Mikal Cronin and King Tuff himself, Kyle Thomas. The vibes were so right with this crew, he dubbed them The Muggers, stretched a rubber baby mask over his head (with extra space sliced out for his mouth to scream through), and they all hit the road a few weeks in front of the album, rolling over the US through the end of March, then heading to Europe for some more. That’s when "LIVE" "AT" "THE" "BBC" happened. They were cutting thru the UK, four shows in five days — just enough time for a Mark Riley session for the BBC! It would be child’s play, in more ways than one. Fifty shows into it, The Muggers were in full-on road mode, their fiveheaded monstrosity fully backing Ty — who for perhaps the only time in all his years of touring —carried only a mic, to focus all his energy on singing. Here, he leads the charge, his pipes deeply tanned, but otherwise unfettered from their nightly regimen. Hammering out a nineteen minute slice of their regular show, he & The Muggers’ free spirits can be heard in EVERY SINGLE MOMENT, with special weirdness coming whenever Cory, Emmett, Mikal and Kyle all chip in on backing vocals. The room feels like barely enough to contain all their shit as they smash through four choice Emotional Mugger cuts and one ostensible finger-in-the-eye, their telescoped take-out of The Doors’ “L.A. Woman.” Blues, yeah! It sounds, a decade hence, like the Black Flag version that never was. Now it’s The Muggers’ version that will ALWAYS be. Yup — undeniably hot stuff. Geologist’s affirmative answer to the question begins with another question — Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights?. It’s also the first step into a rippling songscape in which his hurdy gurdy gives and takes multiple forms, an epic electro-acoustic textile of many colors cut from the life and times of Brian Weitz. It’s an inspired ride through his phases and stages, with traditional sounds, ritual moods, avant, prog-jazz, kraut, post-punk and minimalist vibes merging in electronic infinity. Time changes everything. Brian said the title of the album once a day for probably four thousand days in a row, at least. Now it’s been over five thousand days since he stopped saying it. Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights?, lit like a constellation, threads impulses and happenings across space, cherry picking from his psychic archive: the vibe of an energizing drive from Tucson into the desert, taken repeatedly in the early aughts; an incendiary live witness one night in the clubs in 1998; the unending thrill of the mind-meld in eternal recurrence. Geologist uses the drone and chanter strings, whose possibilities blew open the walls for him back then, to highlight these moments in the kaleidoscopic flow of memory. It’s a process, right? These things take time! As he set the controls to account for a multitude of directions on this long-promised journey, Brian took inspiration from late-dawning solo eras of players like Bill Orcutt and Susan Alcorn. Then, hurdy gurdy in hand, Geologist realized structures, improvisations and rhythm tracks at home before seeking other energies at Asheville’s Drop of Sun Studio. At the session, Adam McDaniel helped a lot — he drafted drummers Emma Garau, Alianna Kalaba (FACS, Cat Power) and Ryan Oslance (The Dead Tongues, Indigo De Souza), Sham’s Shane McCord on clarinets and Mikey Powers on cello. Through vagaries of fate, Brian got Adam Lion to play vibraphone in a few places, Dave “Avey Tare” Portner for a couple bass tracks, and his son, Merrick Weitz, on acoustic guitar for “Government Job.” Izzy Barber painted the front cover and gatefold, capturing that Tucson magic, and Bob Nastanovich lettered the back cover, supplying additional pieces of time and space to the puzzle. Through the mystery and science of record making, Geologist refracts beatifically through his back pages throughout Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights? Realities and mirages flicker in and out of the aural parade route, and as we join the path of engagement, the puzzle transfers itself to our own experiences. When asked why he turned the knob down from 11 for this album, Tashi says simply, “To find the silence.” As ever with Tashi, this is a political statement. Even the search for silence takes intention and happens for a reason. In this time of such institutional inhumanity, what is there to feel but exhaustion? When seeing the faces of the deprived, what is there to feel other than hopelessness? In the face of such grief, what words are there to say? So, Tashi got a couple amps, moved from the shed where he’d done his first two DC titles, set up in a room in the family home with high ceilings and dialed in the reverb. Once the sound was in the space, reflecting in a manner that he felt congenial with his mood, he taped it. It’s a striking signal, meditative and melancholy, with a delicacy comparable to the lineage of Loren Connors or Bill Frisell, the songs at times developed with the deliberate exposition of themes in raga’s alap form. It’s a sound that lives within silence. Once he’d laid down the sound, Tashi went back and listened to the composition of each piece. Then the words came easily. They’re the titles of these songs, they provide the narrative — or a prism, to allow us to gaze unblinking upon the awesome rot of empire. These are Tashi’s punk anthems for the year 2026… for all the years, really— to be thrown to the people outside the walls, to aid them in their quest to be allowed in. ER Jurken’s songwriting, as evidenced by his acclaimed first album I Stand Corrected, is inclined to wander through the past century or so of American music with a uniquely insouciant flair. On his debut, Ed (as his friends call him) did most of the playing himself, underscoring a deeply personal song-cycle of rise, fall and redemption — a bare-bones production that ran the gamut from whoa to woe and back again! To Be Continued, his sophomore release, finds his baroque folk-pop fantasias literally on the rocks— because this time around, Ed’s got a power trio of players from Chicago’s Junegrass to help him crank it up and out of the park. Once up in the air, his heavenly high tenor and vocal choir melodies further extrude the twisted psyche that underscores Ed & Co’s easy riding rock ‘n roll. Spelled in spots by Paul Von Mertens’ extraordinary string and horn arrangements, the songs of To Be Continued aggressively transcend and defy the stings of everyday misfortune. It’s been five years since Ed’s first album. Five years! They piled up in a hurry, but what years they were, encompassing COVID, Trump, Biden and the American politty-go round, January 6th and July 20th (the day the Milwaukee Bucks secured their first championship in 50 years!). For Ed personally, there was also the end of a romantic relationship, the daily struggles that come with working and growing older, and a frustrating period of writer’s block. Novel things that profoundly impacted Ed, to be sure. When the new tunes finally surfaced, requesting and requiring different styles, more conventional song structures and most of all, a shot of rock and roll, Ed was there for the changes. Happy to be crafting his singular new songs in distinctly new musical textures, Ed ensconced himself once again at The Loft, with Mark Greenberg and Rian Murphy assisting the production. To back his vocals, guitar and keyboards, he brought Ben Brazil, Grant Engstrom and Jack Schemenauer in on bass, guitar, drums and percussion. The stalwart rock and roll they generate is further elevated by an old pal of Ed’s from way back, Jonathan Kult, who played additional piano. Strings and horns under the direction of arranger/reedist Paul Von Mertens lift several tracks ever closer to the heavens. The combined tumult of all and sundry form an excellent vessel for the surreal melodrama of To Be Continued. As fluently as Ed’s songwriting passes through eras of American pop, the songs themselves ramble easily through passageways of existence, finding equal measures of illumination, disillusion and affirmation at every turn. ER Jurken’s To Be Continued is a second grand entry in the canon of outside/ inside rock and roll records by an emerging master of the form, an exquisite and timeless musical expression that meets the desperation of the modern world on the beach, with a disarmingly allusive, tuneful and surprising spirit.

Cold in Berlin announce their fifth album Wounds – their most eclectic and ambitious work to date. Wounds is the band's long-awaited fifth album - their first in six years. As heavy as it is haunting, the record masterfully blends doom, post-punk, and driving krautrock in a dynamic, hypnotic maelstrom – pushing London’s most exciting cult band into intoxicating new territory. First single Hangman’s Daughter leads the charge. Opening with a hypnotic techno bassline, the song quickly gives way to post-punk guitars, huge choruses, and vocalist Maya’s magnetic storytelling. Wounds was recorded by Mike Bew, on location at Foel Studio. The band could be found working deep into the witching hours, experimenting with new sounds and filling the valleys with cantankerous wails of sound, bursting from amps borrowed from My Bloody Valentine. Synths on the album are arranged by Berlin-based Bow Church, an influential figure in the dark electronic scene and a longtime collaborator of the band. His work weaves icy and atmospheric textures into the songs, layering complexity that demands repeat listens. The synth led track They Reign captures the band nestled comfortably between Kate Bush and Neu! While meticulously crafted, Wounds captures the visceral energy of Cold in Berlin’s renowned live shows. The album’s arrangements and raucous sound remain true to the unrelenting intensity and atmosphere of their stage performances – every track retains the sweat, urgency, and immediacy of a band performing in the moment. Featuring free-jazz brass sections on the audacious punk rock track 12 Crosses, off-beat structures in the blackened I Will Wait, and the poetic closer Wicked Wounds, and soaring synths on the electro doom of The Stranger, Wounds is the band's most ambitious release yet.

Tulpa are very new: nothing has been released up until now, not even a digital single. Despite this, they attracted the attention of Marc Riley & Gideon Coe, who invited the band to record a live BBC6 Music session this summer. Around the same time, Skep Wax Records were sent the finished album and knew they had to release it. Meanwhile, in the creative hotbeds of the UK’s DIY festivals and indie venues Tulpa are quickly gathering a loyal following. They have recently supported Throwing Muses, Pale Blue Eyes and Bug Club and will be playing a series of headline gigs in October and November 2025. What is a Tulpa? It’s a mythical being manifested into existence through the act of concentrated thought, like an imaginary friend brought to life, but (sometimes) scarier… This album has some of the same qualities. A whole set of loud, catchy, perfectly-crafted pop songs have been conjured into existence - and want to be part of your life. Josie’s hyper-melodic lead vocals are cool and crystalline - but the lyrics are warm and human. The twin guitars create a sonic mesh, a web of textures that traps you, whether you like it or not. And yes, something scarier does lie below the surface. Occasionally the guitars force their way to the front, furious and intense. And sometime those lyrics aren’t as innocent as they first appear. The danger, just below the surface of the songs, is maybe that’s what makes this album so arresting… Tulpa consist of Josie Kirk (vocals, bass), Daniel Hyndman (guitar), Myles Kirk (guitar) and Mike Ainsley (Drums), and are based in Leeds.

The record opens with Antarctica, addressing the world’s ethical dilemma and shaking us out of our comfort zone with a riff reminiscent of Talking Heads in their prime, infused with Laurie Anderson-like abstract phrasing. Vinyl Despite its title, Ratboys’ new album Singin’ to an Empty Chair is not defined by what’s missing. Rather, it’s the beginning of an important dialogue with a close loved one, vocalist Julia Steiner finds herself estranged from. The music on the band’s sixth studio album – its first for New West Records – fills the space that person left behind with 11 songs showcasing Ratboys at the peak of their powers — twangy, effervescent, as confident as they’ve ever been, and perhaps more emotionally interrogative than ever before. The four-piece Chicago band followed up 2023’s highly acclaimed The Window by reconvening with co-producer Chris Walla to begin tracking at a rural Wisconsin cabin before taking the songs to Steve Albini’s famed Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and later to Rosebud Studio in Evanston, Illinois. The results veer from bubbly power-pop on “Anywhere” to irresistible post-country on “Penny in the Lake,” along with heart-piercing ballads like “Just Want You to Know the Truth” and an exhilarating detour into the extraterrestrial on “Light Night Mountains All That,” which Steiner dubs the band’s mammoth “wormhole jam.” Singin’ to an Empty Chair also marks the first Ratboys album written since Steiner began therapy, which the singer/lyricist credits for the clarity found across the album’s unflinching examinations of relationship and self. Fittingly, as the album begins by extending a hand into the void, it concludes with a scene of serenity – all while weaving candid honesty, humor, chaos, and whimsy along the way. “It’s not all doom and gloom,” Steiner says. “The experience of making this record definitely gives me hope for whatever happens next.”

On April 18, 2019, fresh off the plane in Iquitos, I jumped into the taxi of an elderly gentleman and explained that I had come to the Peruvian Amazon to find Ranil. I know where he lives,” he replied, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. And before I knew it, I was no longer searching for the man — I was standing right in front of him. Ranil and I hit it off immediately and ended up spending a month working together on this project. Born in 1935 as Jorge Raúl Llerena Vásquez, Ranil’s story begins in the Peruvian Amazon, where the sounds of the forest mixed with stray radio waves from Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador. He quickly understood that breaking into Peru’s music industry — especially as an artist from “the end of the world” — would be no easy path. He decided to start his own label, Producciones Llerena, something unheard of in this part of the Peruvian Amazon. With a rotating cast of brilliant musicians by his side, Ranil crafted a sound that locals lovingly called „llullampeo“ — imaginative, unpredictable, and fabulously unrestrained. His percussionists wove grooves that have not resurfaced in the region since, and the 14 songs presented here remain some of the most vivid document of that fearless, free-spirited, often psychedelic ensemble.

Born in 1952, Albert Nadeau was a French-Caribbean singer, organist and songwriter from Martinique, known for blending local Caribbean rhythms with funk, soul and reggae inflections. After fronting the local group Les Léopards, he recorded a small but potent set of tracks in the late 1970s that showcased his raw, emotive voice and taste for groove-driven arrangements.
Brother Mudada, born Alan Fortune, is a veteran Trinidad & Tobago calypsonian who began his career in 1961. He is known for socially conscious music that reflects calypso’s tradition of political and cultural commentary. Over the decades, he earned major recognition in the Caribbean, including winning the Calypso Monarch title in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, in 2004 and later receiving a national honor, the Hummingbird Silver Award, for his contribution to music and culture.
At the heart of that period stands “I Am Black” from his 1977 solo LP. The track is a slow-burning tropical-funk/reggae cut built around a loping groove, organ-based chords and Nadeau’s gritty, passionate lead vocal. Musically it sits between biguine-tinged island rhythm and 1970s funk/soul. Though it never entered the mainstream charts, ‘I Am Black’- admired for the way it bridges Caribbean musical tradition with the Black Power and soul currents of its era - has in recent years become one of the most sought-after Caribbean songs.

The Awakening were the only “group” recorded by Black Jazz, for which they made two albums; those two releases happen to be among the most collectible in the label’s entire catalog. Recorded in 1972, Hear, Sense, and Feel marked the band’s debut, and featured the same line-up that played on next year’s Mirage. Being from Chicago, The Awakening’s line-up unsurprisingly boasts a heavy connection to the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) collective that claimed The Art Ensemble of Chicago among its most esteemed artists; in fact, both bassist Reggie Willis and tenor saxman/flautist Ari Brown were AACM members and appeared on albums with Muhal Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, and Anthony Braxton among others. The other members of The Awakening, on the other hand, hailed from the city’s soul jazz scene, specifically Young Holt Unlimited, for whom co-leaders trumpeter Frank Gordon and keyboardist Ken Chaney played (trombonist Steve Galloway played on Melvin Jackson’s soul jazz classic Funky Skull). And it is that sweet spot, somewhere between the free jazz and Afrocentric explorations of the Art Ensemble and the rhythm-heavy soul jazz sound being recorded at Chicago-based labels like Brunswick and Cadet, that Hear, Sense and Feel lands. This blue with black swirl vinyl edition features liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! The only “group” on the Black Jazz roster, The Awakening today should be heralded as one of the great bands in early ‘70s jazz. That they’re not is the result of the Black Jazz label’s distribution woes; witness the fact that original copies of both of their records for the imprint command prices in the hundreds of dollars if you can find them at all. Mirage is their second (1973) album, the last one they made together; it boasts the same Chicago-based, AACM-centric line-up as the first, with the notable addition of bassist Rufus Reid on a couple of tracks. Spiritual jazz, free jazz, soul jazz, fusion jazz, you name it—The Awakening take all those threads common to early ‘70s African-American music and, like any great ensemble, weave them into a beautiful sonic garment that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Mirage is a bit less political/pan-African than Hear, Sense and Feel, its predecessor, which definitely owed some of its feel to the band’s Art Ensemble of Chicago/AACM roots; this record is a little more abstract, a little more varied in its moods and textural coloring, yet no less powerful and transporting. This limited (to 500 copies) blue with black swirl vinyl edition comes with liner notes by Pat Thomas. A record to discover, savor, and treasure.

(Expanded Tiger Swirl Vinyl Edition & Expanded CD Edition) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 6, 2026 The success of Shaft and Superfly ignited an explosion of films, many produced by small independent studios and filmmakers, whose soundtracks continue to provide rich fodder for turntablists, crate diggers, and the like. Of these indie Black-themed films, the once-lost and recently rediscovered 1974 flick Solomon King is perched atop the list. The film was written, directed, and produced by Oakland, CA entrepreneur Sal Watts, who also starred in the movie. But it was no mere vanity project. Watts owned several record labels in Oakland and a string of Black urban fashion stores and acted as executive producer of a local soul music & dance TV program. So, he was able to draw on a wealth of local talent in making Solomon King. And nowhere did that talent show up more than on the soundtrack. Southern soul stalwart and Ray Charles collaborator Jimmy Lewis arranged and conducted the score, while writers like Joyce Stiger, who penned Bobby Bland’s hit “Recess in Heaven,” contributed songs. The band was tight, too, composed of the cream of Oakland’s thriving soul-funk scene. Little wonder, then, that original copies of this soundtrack go for over three Benjamins if you can find them at all. But, working with the indie film imprint Deaf Crocodile, who restored and reissued the film a few years back with the cooperation of Watts’ wife Belinda, we at Real Gone are releasing the soundtrack to Solomon King in expanded form featuring additional tracks drawn from rare 45s hailing from Watts’ Sal/Wa label. It’s a nonstop funk workout, issued on tiger swirl vinyl with three bonus cuts and a CD edition adding three more. Propulsive beats, silky strings, wah-wah guitar tickles…if you’re into that ‘70s soul sound, Solomon King is a revelation.

But singer-songwriterkeyboardist Leon Ware pulled off that unlikely feat, first with his debut solo record for United Artists in 1972, and then with this one, released by Elektra in 1982. What he did in between was almost as noteworthy, writing and producing material for Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Minnie Riperton, and Marvin Gaye, for whom he helmed the classic I Want You record. After keyboardist/composer Bayeté a.k.a. Todd Cochran established his musical presence on the San Francisco scene playing in Bobby Hutcherson’s band, and before becoming a key member of the innovative band Automatic Man, which he co-founded with Santana drummer Michael Shrieve, he recorded a couple of solo albums for the Prestige label that feature some of the most far-out, futuristic music the legendary jazz imprint ever released. The first, Worlds Around the Sun, created quite a critical stir and debuted his composition “Free Angela,” which was later recorded again by Santana and sampled widely by artists like Kendrick Lamar, De La Soul, and Jay Electronica. But it was this album, 1973’s Seeking Other Beauty, that represented the full flowering of his vision. As Bayeté says in the notes by Pat Thomas that accompany our Real Gone reissue, “While I’ve held space for the blues aesthetic and jazz in everything I’ve done, I was leaving one world and entering another, unmooring the ship and heading into a sea of unknowns, so to speak.” That ship ended up at a dazzling destination reached by few; early ‘70s electric Miles is a clear point on the compass, but so are Parliament-Funkadelic and Lonnie Liston Smith, if he were playing a fuzzed-out clavinet instead of a Fender Rhodes. Bayeté went on to collaborate with everybody from Peter Gabriel to Herbie Hancock to Stanley Clarke, but Seeking Other Beauty delivers the full measure of the man. This is a first-ever reissue, featuring an all-analog pressing in either black vinyl or “plasma” vinyl, accompanied by an added insert. OLU DARA: IN THE WORLD—FROM NATCHEZ TO NEW YORK (LIMITED, REMASTERED GREEN OKRA VINYL EDITION) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 6, 2026 Critics everywhere agreed that Olu Dara’s In the World—From Natchez to New York was one of 1998’s best albums. The only problem was, in what category? Jazz? Dara came to this album with impeccable credentials in the genre, having played with David Murray, James “Blood” Ulmer, Henry Threadgill, and Don Pullen. However, though Dara does flash his burnished cornet tone on occasion, he is more often picking on guitar as opposed to blowing on trumpet on this record. And while there is definitely some of that arpeggiated African guitar sound to his playing, it would be a stretch to call In the World a “world music” release. In 1783, when the American War of Independence came to an end, over 3000 people of African descent left New York on 81 boats, sailing for Nova Scotia with the promise of land and freedom. Arriving in Nova Scotia, these so-called Black Loyalists were given the poorest housing, little food, few supplies - yet they survived and went on to spark a unique and vibrant culture in settlements across the province. Descended directly from those first settlers, Black Nova Scotian artist Lance Sampson (a.k.a. Aquakultre) has created a profound concept album fittingly entitled 1783 that is deeply rooted in this story and those of his ancestors. The 17track album comprises 11 songs and 6 interludes, with each describing Black Nova Scotian history, thoughtful family stories, and intergenerational reflections. Seamlessly blending a wide range of historically Black music, 1783 has hints of gospel, blues, jazz, and soul, mixed in with vintage R&B. It’s fueled by a full decade of Burhenn’s political frustration and aimed at finding a revolutionary yet pacifist way in a world where, these days, it seems warring comes quick. Lyrically, GENERALS sings the voice of the collective frustration, then moves beyond that. The album’s name comes from a Richard Avedon photo entitled “Generals of the Daughters of the American Revolution.” The lineage of women that have stood up to injustice for well over a hundred years, women like Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Gloria Steinem, Naomi Wolf, they get their hands dirty. And Burhenn wanted to pay tribute to that.

Christian Schoppik's Läuten Der Seele project has long since stirred the anima within the hidden reverse of quotidian objects by looping and re-contextualising obscure and disparate sample sources. With the addition of Jota Solo, these often oneiric and impressionistic collages and story paintings now open up to a more expressive and direct colour scheme, quite literally as if Schoppik's sonic phantasmagorias have been ultimately given a real human voice to speak their mysteries. But whose voice is that? Jota has a long-running history traversing Austria's outsider art scene under a myriad of different pseudonyms, most notably in the group Novŷ Svêt, a duo he shared with Frl. Tost, formed in the late 90s in Vienna's seminal post-industrial underground. Often mislabeled as “neo-cabaret“ or “combat-folk“ for a lack of understanding the duo's immense genre-blind creativity, Novŷ Svêt always remained misfits in every scene they entered but garnered attention and cult following from a group of more open-minded listeners. For as long as he can remember, Schoppik's own work has been heavily influenced by the iridescent and protean microcosm of Novŷ Svêt, not so much in sound, as in spirit. Such is the extent of that inspiration, he has also helped introduce their music to a new and younger audience with the release of their long-lost Desde Infiernos de Flores album on his own Quirlschlängle imprint. In part, the first long-form collaboration between Christian and Jota hence resembles the framework of the FRKWYS inter-generational series, but there is nothing clinical or conceptual about this work. Instead, we're eavesdropping on a chance meeting of the two in what feels like the fragment of a shared dream, sublimating each other's spectral antics through spirals of noise and song.

02/06/2025 As genre conventions continue to morph and blur, there's a wealth of stunning new music being made wherever groups of musicians have the imagination and ingenuity to transcend the old boundaries and just play whatever comes naturally. Sun Speak are such a group and their album Probiotic Orchestrations is full of music that's urgent, powerful, accessible and humorous, pulling together sounds and textures from the worlds of rock, jazz, electronica, Americana and the outer reaches of progressive music into compelling whole. Guitarist Matt Gold and drummer Nate Friedman first came together as Sun Speak ten years ago amid the white heat of the Chicago experimental scene, where they'd worked with such luminaries as Makaya McCraven and Patricia Barber. On this, their sixth release, they continue to develop their own distinctive sonic world with the aid of fellow Chicagoan Daniel Pierson who joined as engineer/sound sculptor and now increasingly takes a collaborative role as a third member of the band on keyboards. Now the trio are dispersed and live in different corners of the USA, but in 2024 they came together in a remote seaside cabin in New Hampshire, writing and recording every day in an intense undisturbed whirlwind of creativity. Probiotic Orchestrations is the result - a dazzling mix of improvisation and composition, exploring rhythm, colour and texture with the directness of rock and the fearless improvisatory flair of jazz.

While respecting the tradition, the internationally renowned trombonists Paul Dunlea (from Cork) and Trevor Mires (from London) are not traditionalists, and their collaborative project Silfra showcases their thoroughly contemporary skills as composers and arrangers to create a fascinatingly diverse set of trombone led music. Silfra is the name of a place in Iceland where the tectonic plates of Europe and America meet and rub together. "I scuba-dived between the two plates and touched them both at the same time," says Dunlea, and the album presents a true transatlantic meeting of talent. The project was conceived after Paul and Trevor worked together on a project at London's famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, and the music was recorded at the legendary New York studio of Rudy Van Gelder with a specially assembled band of their favorite US musicians. 02/06/2025
For the drum chair, Trevor chose Billy Kilson, famed for his long association with Dave Holland, while Paul selected bassist Ike Sturm (Donny McCaslin) and pianist Jim Ridl (Kurt Elling, Joe Locke). Ryan Keberle contributes a third trombone to some of the sections to create a full, lush sound. The result is a stunning album that combines influences from both the leaders' multi-faceted careers, Paul's Irish heritage, and their deep love of the jazz tradition. Silfra is a beautifully realised album from two master musicians completely at ease in their surroundings.

Britta Virves Simple Things 02/06/2025 Whirlwind debut from Estonian pianist and vocalist Britta Virves. Joined by her regular trio partners Jon Henriksson on bass and Jonas Backman on drums, and a captivating guest appearance from Artadi, she's created a set of sparklingly fresh original music that is at once accessible and outgoing, yet still deeply personal. Drawing from her constant searching for her own unique sound she filters her love of rhythm and groove through her Nordic sensibility to create an accessible, compelling blend of excitement and introspection. Growing up on the island of Saaremaa in her native Estonia, Britta Virves was a keen piano student playing a strictly classical repertoire. A chance encounter introduced her to jazz: "I wanted to learn guitar. So I went to my teacher Tit Paulus, and he told me to stay with piano, and introduced me to Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans - my mind was blown - a new world opened up." Britta immersed herself in the music and her talent soon attracted attention. Moving to Sweden to further her studies, she was soon touring Europe with the acclaimed Norrbotten Big Band, under the direction of Joakim Milder, working closely with featured guest vocalist Genevieve Artadi and accompanying Artadi on a duo tour opening for Louis Cole. Each tune on the album draws inspiration from an aspect of Britta's own life. "Simple Things" has the directness of a pop song married to the depth of jazz, as Genevieve Artadi's ethereal vocals float over an insistent backbeat that supports limpid depths of harmony. Other tracks include "Bravery", which showcases the subtlety and dynamic control of the rhythm team.
