This Issue: Eric Warner, President of We Are Busy Bodies

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

When I was fourteen, I started a music fanzine. Initially, I had wondered about the process of interviewing my favourite bands, and learning more about what inspired them. I found that through meeting people in the music industry it continued my love and curiosity and in the process broke me out of my shell. Each lived experience started with an “I wonder if I can do this moment.” From there, I started promoting concerts, running a festival, playing in touring bands, booking tours, managing artists, and working in both music and entertainment marketing.

When and where did the label begin?

We Are Busy Bodies was launched in 2005 in Toronto. The band I was in at the time was breaking up but had recorded an album, which I wanted to release for posterity. It ended up being a split CD with our friends, Japanther which sold surprisingly well and let me reinvest the profits into the next release, and so on.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I used to view We Are Busy Bodies as a genre agnostic label, but at a certain point in recent years launched new imprints to separate things out a bit. While there’s a chance a jazz fan loves power pop and children’s albums, reaching multiple segments all in one household, I realized we needed to refocus.

How has the label changed since it started?

The label’s mandate was to champion the music of our friends and help them find new audiences starting with a few hundred, thousand, or more people. The only difference is while we were primarily capturing the music coming out of Toronto at the time and US friends acts I booked tours for. In the 20 years since, I believe that we’ve made some new friends and hopefully had a positive impact in the process.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Patient. We put out a lot of great music between our imprints, but it doesn’t mean each release will be met with the same response by a fan of a previous release. I think we’re consistent, that we care about the music and origin stories behind each release and work hard to communicate this in the process. Likely our fans are a mix of crate diggers and patient music fans.

Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

I’m biased, but I’m very much looking forward to Gwenifer Raymond’s ‘Last Night I Heard The Dog Star Bark,” Ken-ichiro Isoda’s ‘Beach of the Pliocene’ 2LP compilation, Danna and Clement ‘A Gradual Awakening,’ and Rich Aucoin’s Synthetic 4 releases through We Are Busy Bodies out this fall. Christo Graham will have a new fall album called Good Covers. He’s one of my favourite songwriters.

Through Having Fun, I’m very excited about The Boojums debut LP out on Halloween, which I think is going to be a big record for us, and for them. The same can be said about Absolute Losers sophomore album, ‘In The Crowd.’

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

I’m fine with colour vinyl. It’s artist and design preference. The coolest colour record I’ve done is a cornetto colour record that looked like a flower. I also did a short-run 5-colour series for a song by the band Electric Looking Glass for their Purple, Blue, Red, and Yellow song as part of the album promotion.

We like to have fun with our release formats. We’ve issued several King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard bootlegs because it’s allowed us to experiment with ideas we likely couldn’t sell through any other way. This has included a record shaped like a buzzsaw, a record that played in reverse, a record with an 80-piece puzzle, an LP with a hidden 7” embedded in a gatefold sleeve, and a glow in the dark record. We have a paper airplane shared record, and a record that plays forwards and in reverse on the same side and at two different speeds on either side of the album. We’ve also played records out of x-rays, embedded with Doritos, postcard singles, and a record that was actually a sandwich. What’s life without whimsy?

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? I’m always thinking about fun, weird things that I can do. Probably not the most expensive thing, but I’m trying to make a fully mirrored record. You’re welcome.

I’ve made a record that was a sandwich, mixed drink, and piece of fruit where I made all the bread, cooked all the elements (there was a vegan option too), and it came with a download code. That’s probably the weirdest one I’ve made. That probably ties into weirdest promotion as well. If you weren’t there, you didn’t get a “record.”

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

When I started in music, streaming was pretty much mp3.com or illegal torrents (Hi Metallica) early on. I worked for MySpace at one point, again aging myself. CD sales and even LP sales were significant and huge drivers. I now find that the press, which used to have a huge impact on sales, doesn’t necessarily have the same correlation necessarily, even though it remains exciting to see writers get behind each release. It makes it even more important to find ways to directly engage with your potential audiences; mailing lists, social media, targeted ads, etc. are all important.

The early 90’s were an incredible time for Shoegaze fans, and the 12” EP was the format that delivered the most vital music of the era. Usually just 4 songs, these EPs were released as quickly as possible after being recorded, and had tracks that were often not found on the subsequent full-length LP.

We here at Outer Battery are looking to bring back the heady days of the 12” EP, and what better band to do that with than Swervedriver!

Back with their first new music in over 5 years, with 2 tracks recorded with Mark Gardener from Ride and the other 2 recorded by YouTube star Rick Beato, The World’s Fair EP is classic Swervedriver, with Beatles-tinged hits like Pack Yr Vision and psychedelic freak-outs like The World’s Fair. This EP, pressed on orange vinyl, is not to be missed!

THE NECKS ▒ DISQUIET

Release Date: October 10, 2025

Catalog #: NS 174

Territory: worldwide Genre: jazz Styles: ambient jazz, post-rock drift, electroacoustic soundscape, kosmische-inspired, ambient-adjacent, durational composition

Compact Disc 3CDs 18pt digipak foldout UPC: 309272739190

A three-hour, triple CD, their 20th release, + massive tour in EU, UK

On Disquiet, The Necks stretch their immersive, shape-shifting sound across three discs and more than three hours of labyrinthine, patient intensity. This is their 20th studio recording and it marks the 39th year of the band’s existence.

Meticulously recorded and sculpted, the four extended pieces on Disquiet see Tony Buck, Chris Abrahams, and Lloyd Swanton pushing at the outer edges of their collective intuition, building and unraveling hypnotic structures with microscopic focus. Present is the usual arsenal of piano, double bass, and drums, and all the in-between of sounds undefined and sources obscured.

The music of The Necks has always carried a profound sense of shared responsibility ––between the players, of course, in their utter commitment to the improvisational –– but also between the work and its audience. With music so open, there are profound opportunities to choose: what to focus on, whether to focus at all, etc. Disquiet takes this further: there is no particular listening order prescribed. There is no “Disc 1, Disc 2, Disc 3.” The music itself seems to stretch time, and this presentation challenges ideas of sequencing. The Necks, one may argue, are a mode of discovery as much as they are a band.

Regarding the sound itself, The Necks’ signature restraint and textural depth remain, with subtle tonal shifts, evolving motifs, and roiling phases of keen and propulsive clatter, strains of subdued surprise and unmatched intentionality –– as ever, expansive and absorbing.

COLD: Year of the Spider

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 10, 2025

The third time was the charm for Cold, as album #3 went to #3 on the charts. Vocalist Scooter Ward was always (and still is) the band’s biggest asset, so Year of the Spider’s move in a more melodic direction worked both artistically and commercially, even landing them a hit single (“Stupid Girl,” co-written with Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo). But take a closer listen, and the emotional depth and vulnerability of Ward’s lyrics really do set Cold apart from its grunge and nu-metal contemporaries. And who doesn’t relate to a song called “Kill the Music Industry?!” Incredibly, this 2003 smash has never been out on LP…we’ve had it remastered for the format, and pressed it in red with white spider web swirl vinyl nestled inside a gatefold jacket. Way overdue release!

LIMITED EDITION: 1500 Copies

Frank Capra’s film It’s a Wonderful Life isn’t just the most beloved holiday film of all time. It’s also arguably the most quintessentially American movie ever made. Its populist message, everyman hero, patriotism, and sentimentality have proven a potent blend for multiple generations. So many scenes from this film are embroidered in our country’s collective consciousness; and much of the stitching holding those scenes together was supplied by Dimitri Tiomkin’s indelible score. But what you hear in the film is only a portion of what Tiomkin wrote. Director Capra cut several cues (e.g “Death Telegram”), letting those scenes play without music and rearranged where certain cues appeared; he removed sections of cues, and even tracked in music written for other films. But, working with Tiomkin’s original acetates, soundtrack collectors were able to piece together Tiomkin’s score as originally written for release on CD about a decade ago. Seldom has a movie swung so wildly from romance to reflection, brooding darkness to playful whimsy…that’s why we love it so much. Now, lovers of It’s a Wonderful Life could finally hear how Tiomkin’s original score artfully emphasized and commented on the movie’s high emotional peaks and deep valleys. Indeed, there really remains only one last step to cement Tiomkin’s legacy and, for that matter, Capra’s too. For the score to It’s a Wonderful Life has never been released on LP in any form, not in its full form or even in Capra’s truncated version. Now, we at Real Gone Music are very, very proud to present It’s a Wonderful Life on vinyl for very first time, in its complete, restored form with a two-page insert including photos, credits, and the promo poster image of Jimmy Stewart exuberantly hoisting Donna Reed. THE GHOULS: Dracula’s Deuce

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 10, 2025

Do hearses and hot rods go together? Well, they sure do in the fevered mind of famed producer Gary Usher! Usher made his bones penning songs for the Beach Boys (he co-wrote “In My Room” with Brian Wilson) and producing a band you might have heard of called The Byrds. In between those celebrated stints, he indulged his love of surf and hot rod music with a series of albums by such studio outfits as The Hondells, Mr. Gasser and the Weirdos (featuring album art by custom car painter Ed “Big Daddy” Roth), The Kickstands, and The Super Stocks. But the one album from the Usher oeuvre that everybody’s been wanting to rescue from the vinyl crematorium is his frightfully funny 1964 foray into horror rock, Dracula’s Deuce. In the hands of Usher and his crack outfit of Capitol studio musicians (a.k.a. The Wrecking Crew) and long-time collaborators like vocalist Ritchie Burns, “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena” became “The Little Old Lady from Transylvania,” “Johnny B. Goode” became “Bela Be Good,” and “Be True to Your School” became, you guessed it, “Be True to Your Ghoul.” But for our money, the originals, composed by Usher, Richie Podolor, and Roger Christian among others, are the main attraction, including the creepy exotica of “Dracula’s Theme” and the surreal “Monsterbilly Heaven.” Original copies of this one command monstrous sums (we should know, we sprung for one), and it’s NEVER been reissued in any format until this orange “pumpkin burnout” smoke vinyl edition that we at Real Gone Music are releasing for Halloween this year. Limited to 2000 copies!

A 1964 horror rock classic from the king of the genre, Gary Paxton! Gary was the producer behind the all-time Halloween hit “Monster Mash,” and that song rears its revivified head here (in a little more R&B vein) along with such frightening fare as “Monster Surf Stomp,” “Werewolf Watusi,” and “That Little Old Graverobber Me.” And let’s not forget the classic single, “Riboflavin-Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood,” which was later covered by modern day horror rockers 45 Grave! Very, very collectible stuff that’s been buried in the Capitol vaults outside of a budget cassette release back in the ‘80s, featuring Las Vegas DJ Don Hinson doing excellent Bela Lugosi et al. impressions to producer Paxton’s driving beats. Orange and black pumpkin splatter pressing limited to 2000 copies!

While this album has been reissued before, this is the first time it’s been cut all-analog straight from the original tapes. And there are some real treats to savor in all their pure sonic glory, like “There’s a Creature in the Surfer’s Lagoon,” which The Cramps must have heard a time or three. As always with these anonymous Halloween concept albums (see our Frankie Stein and the Ghouls releases), speculation has run rampant as to who’s playing on It’s Monster Surfing Time; suspicion this time falls on legendary “Games People Play” guitarist Joe South, who penned five of the numbers here and whose first hit was, after all, 1958’s “The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor.” So we’re gonna go with him as a likely suspect. We’re pressing this one in bloody pumpkin vinyl limited to 900 copies!

Introducing Frankie Stein and His Ghouls (Limited Opaque Orange Pumpkin Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 10, 2025

UPC: 848064019909

After years of visiting graveyards, combing through haunted houses, and pursuing (heh heh) dead ends, we finally tracked down the rights to the legendary Frankie Stein and His Ghouls series! Why did we risk life, limb, and livelihood to find these records? Well, there’s something extra special about these Frankie Stein and His Ghouls records. You wouldn’t think that Halloween records released by a subsidiary (Power Records) of a children’s specialty label (Peter Pan Records) would be so… er…visceral, but these records are definitely the most out there of their kind. And there might be a reason for that…you see, it has been revealed that the Power label enlisted the aid of some very, very interesting musicians for some of its projects. For instance, the imprint’s 1966 album Batman and Robin by The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale was actually produced by Tom Wilson of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, and Mothers of Invention fame—and the band was made up free jazz legend Sun Ra and members of The Blues Project! Which has led to all sorts of speculation about who Frankie Stein and His Ghouls actually were; among the names bandied about are guitarist Duane Eddy, jazz saxophonist Max Greger, and, yes, Sun Ra and the Blues Project again. At any rate, prepare yourself for frenetic rock-and-twist workouts punctuated by deranged howls and shattering sound effects. And with a back story like Introducing Frankie Stein and His Ghouls has, it is of course insanely collectible and goes for big bucks online. Opaque orange pumpkin vinyl edition inside the classic original cover art, limited to just 500 copies!

Don Was, the six-time GRAMMY® Award-winning musician, producer and composer, pays tribute to his hometown of Detroit with his new band, Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble, and their debut album Groove In The Face of Adversity.

“There’s a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates the music in a way that resonates all over the globe’, says Was. “There is a rawness, a lack of pretension and an unmistakable, underlying groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire City.” Made up of stellar jazz musicians from the Motor City, the band includes long-time collaborators like saxophonist Dave McMurray, keyboardist Luis Resto, trombonist Vincent Chandler, trumpeter John Douglas, drummer Jeff Canady, percussionist Mahindi Masai, guitarist Wayne Gerard and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an.

“When the opportunity came to put together a new band, the message was clear to me: go back to Detroit where I came from, be who I am, play like who I am and team up with some like-minded individuals”, says Was.

Candid Records is proud to bring back one of the most coveted live performances in jazz history. Recorded in 1964 and self-released via mail-order the following year, Mingus At Monterey was embraced by fans as a full-force document of a genius at the peak of his powers as a composer, interpreter, bandleader, bassist, and uncompromising cultural and political force.

His own compositions sit alongside those of his spiritual father, Duke Ellington, with commentary from Mingus that feels just as vital as the music itself.

The Orb Buddhist Hipsters

Release Date: 10 October 2025 th

In a changing, unpredictable and turbulent world, something we can always rely on is a new Orb album, with the next holiday-for-the-head never far away. On what is quite possibly the millionth longplayer helmed by electronic lifer Alex Paterson; partnered with the now firmly-entrenched boy wonder Michael Rendall; the inspirationally productive outfit yet again deliver the goods, with one of their best yet.

“I was having a dream, and in this dream was an escalator descending out of the clouds, upon which were Buddhists and hipsters travelling downwards, and beckoning me down from the top, was Roger Eno When I woke up, I had a text from him, asking if we fancied more collabs, so he’s on the record, amongst other friends

Recording the album and playing recent gigs have been comfortable, happy and therapeutic experiences, largely due to Michael Rendall, who’s a genius that picks up anything he turns his hand to. We have a wonderful, simpatico relationship on record and on stage. Overall, the length, arc and energy of Buddhist Hipsters energy mirrors one our fans’ faves, U.F. Orb.”

Alex Paterson

The album features Roger Eno, Miquette Giraudy & Steve Hillage (System 7 / Gong), Youth (Killing Joke), Paul Ferguson (Killing Joke), Andy Falconer (The Orb / Sedibus), Trevor Walters, Violetta Vicci, Eric Von Skywalker & Andy Caine.

37 years after the release of her multi-million selling debut album ‘Ancient Heart’ Tanita Tikaram will release the sequel entitled ‘LIAR (Love Isn’t A Right)’. The long-awaited new album reveals the emotional and societal differences between the woman Tanita was at just 18 when she made ‘Ancient Heart’ to the woman she is today, taking in four decades of life experience.

Her first in a decade, LIAR (love Isn’t A Right)’ is an album of haunting beauty and exquisite musicianship underplaying her unique voice that tells a masterful story of emotional, political and personal truths.

When it was released in 1988, the multi-million selling ‘Ancient Heart’ was the story of an uncertain 18-year-old brown gay woman living in middle England feeling like a stranger in her own home. Almost 40 years later that same woman, now feeling like a stranger in her own country as politics and society become more divisive. ‘LIAR (Love Is A Right)’ is a full circle moment: a comment on community and its importance for all our futures and the perfect accompaniment to her classic breakthrough.

Celebrated as a maverick music icon Tanita Tikaram was recently featured in the Venice Biennale exhibition by Sonia Boyce OBE RA and previously in the National Portrait Gallery captured by David Bennett. She returned to play at Glastonbury Festival in 2024 and as well as her acclaimed musical output over the years, Tanita has also developed a popular voice on social media, capturing the mood and zeitgeist of our times.

Ebo Taylor

EboTaylor

A landmark recording from one of Ghana’s great musical architects, Ebo Taylor’s 1977 self-title release marked the first solo LP by the legendary guitarist, arranger, and composer after years behind the scenes shaping the sound of modern highlife

Emerging during a pivotal era in Ghana’s cultural and political life, the album finds Taylor fusing his roots in Fante traditional rhythms with the electric groove of American funk, soul, and jazz - a sound honed during his time studying in London and comparing notes with the likes of Fela Kuti and members of Osibisa.

.

Recorded for the Essiebons label, Ebo Taylor brims with richly layered horns, deep Afrobeat-inspired grooves, and a melodic sophistication that speaks to Taylor’s gift as both bandleader and storyteller. Unjustly overlooked at the time, Ebo Taylor has since become a touchstone for cratediggers worldwide, with tracks like “Heaven” achieving cult status among DJs and collectors

Now reissued by Strut Records, this release includes newly restored and remastered audio by The Carvery and See Why Audio, as well as new liner notes containing an interview with Taylor’s son, Henry Taylor.

Soul Jazz Records Presents SOUL JAMAICA

Soul Jazz Records’ new Soul Jamaica brings together a wicked selection of reggae funk and soul tracks from the legendary Studio One stable , featuring a stellar line-up of artists including Jackie Mittoo, The Heptones, The Gladiators, Sim Smith, Peter Tosh and The Wailers, Cedric ‘Im’ Brooks and many more.

For a short period of time at the end of the 1960s and early 1970s, nestled between the end of rocksteady and the arrival of roots reggae, Studio One released a small stream of superb soul and funk reggae tunes – covering everyone from Sly and The Family Stone, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Nina Simone, Gene Chandler, Tyrone Davis and more.

Most of the tracks featured on Soul Jamaica were only ever released on Studio One’s UK-subsidiary label Bamboo in small-run pressings and are now consequently extremely hard to find.

The cover photograph features images of Air Jamaica, the new airline created by the Jamaican government at the end of the 1960s, showing how in the years following independence the country assumed its place on the world stage, with reggae music playing a key role in creating the island’s new cultural identity.

Denver, CO’s Public Opinion are back with a new three-song EP, Perpetual Motion Machine, arriving this fall via their new label, Side One Dummy. The EP is a promising start to the band’s next chapter, drawing more melody out of Public Opinion’s primal punk while keeping the unhinged glint that makes their music so compelling. The EP’s monster opening track and lead single, “Laughing Academy” features guest vocals from none other than Drug Church frontman, Patrick Kindlon. The track bursts from the speakers, careening from swaggering garage rock riffs into a massive chorus, all while vocalist Kevin Hart and Kindlon perform the most pissed-off duet you’ve ever heard.

Public Opinion–Hart, drummer Austin Latare, guitarists Kevin Johnson and Brent Liseth, and bassist Sebastian Stanley–emerged from the Denver, Colorado, hardcore scene in 2020 and have evolved from spunky proto-punks into an anthemic rock & roll powerhouse. Perpetual Motion Machine follows the band’s debut album, Painted On Smile, which came out last year and drew praise from the likes of Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, Paste Magazine, and more. The new songs were recorded by Christian Gutierrez and mixed/mastered by Brett Romnes (Anxious, Oso Oso, I Am The Avalanche) and they pick up where Painted On Smile left off, dialing up the band’s catchy and confrontational blend.

The band will be on tour across the US this fall with Militarie Gun before heading into the studio to record with producer Brett Romnes.

JOSE MEDELES with MARC RIBOT

High Above The Ground

Do Not Bite 6. Shadow Cadence 7. Drift

• FIRST PRESSING ON B&W SPLATTER VINYL.

“A

mighty recording of two lifelong devotees to the higher power of music finding nirvana right in front of us.”

José Medeles’ relationship with Marc Ribot began in the same way as so many music fanatics: as a fan. After a marathon single day session, Medeles and Ribot emerged with High Above The Ground, a stunning, breathtaking encapsulation of two musicians deeply intertwined and communicative on a psychic level.

Though this record is technically a José Medeles album co-starring Marc Ribot, the drummer approached the project by imagining how his playing would work alongside the New Jersey-born songwriter. It’s something he’s thought about a lot over the years when listening to Marc’s music.

“Marc is one of my favorite living guitar players and writers, and I have often tried to imagine what my drumming voice would sound like with his playing — he’s inspired me that much as an artist,” Medeles explains. As such, he approached the session with an excitement aided by just a bit of anxiety. It was to be a singular moment in his recording career. “This particular session was a musical Mount Everest for me, and I am definitely a better drummer and creative after the session. It was just so open and freeing,” he adds.

Any anxiety Medeles felt melted away as soon as the two began playing together. That freedom he mentions is nearly palpable in the musical conversation that occurs across the album’s seven tracks. Take “Hook of Holland,” which begins with a cascade of tom drums struck by hand (Medeles plays stickless throughout the album) before Ribot roars through with a ripping electric guitar improvisation. He works in between Medeles’ groove, and while his tone suggests a solo, the conversation between his ideas and the rhythm interlock with clarity.

Describing the process, Medeles broke it down simply enough: “Essentially what happened is that two musicians that are viciously dedicated to their instruments got together in a beautiful studio one afternoon and played for the sheer love of playing.”

The duo decamped to Tucker Martine’s Flora Recording And Playback to document the performance, and in the studio they were able to capture the raw immediacy of something akin to a concert with all of the clarity offered in a world class recording space. It’s the perfect middle ground between prepared and whimsical.

Ruby Rushton Legacy!

10/10/2025

Ruby Rushton's fifth studio album Legacy! written by band leader Tenderlonious and keys player Aidan Shepherd, marks a new chapter for the hugely influential UK jazz group. In the past the band - which also includes trumpeter Nick Waltersand drummer Tim Carnegie- worked with a "one take" live approach; avoiding the use of overdubs. For Legacy! the four musicians decided to combine their virtuosic abilities with Tenderlonious' studio production skills. Each of the compositions sees layers of horn and flute lines added to the melodies on top of the original live takes. The result is impressive; the listener is left with a wider sonic spectrum than previously heard on Ruby Rushton albums.

Legacy! was recorded across four days in early 2025 at Rimshot Studios in Kent. Four days of joy, lived out in classicRubyfashion; laughter and jokes at theheart of everything. You don't reach your fifth album if it'snot fun. It was completely natural; a band of brothers doing what they do best. Those frosty, crisp January days found the quartet in stronger form than ever before. The band at the peak of their powers; a tight-knit group of companions and musicians, expressing themselves free of inhibitions.

Fourteen years after recording Two for Joy, this is a band still evolving. Trademarkcatchyriffsandheadygroovesarestilltherebutnowheightened by a level of maturity and a sense of belonging. This is, and will always be, their Legacy!

Ancient Infinity Orchestra It’s Always About Love

Black BioVinyl Limited LP, in printed reverse board sleeve, containing a ltd 12” 300gsm artwork print and packed in resealable protective sleeve. Exlclusive first edition limted to 750 copies

CD edition, in printed sleeve, packed in a resealable protective bag.

“Ancient Infinity Orchestra is an attitude: a love, enthusiasm and openness.”

Based in the North of England. Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a joyous large ensemble that has communal music-making at the heart of everything they do. And that includes the melodies that flow out of their new album It’s Always About Love which blossom with uplifting improvised contributions that circle around bandleader Ozzy Moysey’s beautiful songs; generous sonic gifts of healing and repair.

The 15-member ensemble has a distinctive line-up: two double basses, harp, saxophones, clarinets, violin, viola, cello, oboe, flutes, mandolin, congas, piano, drum kit, with bells, shakers and other percussion instruments scattered on the floor of live sets and recording sessions, ready for members to use whenever the spirit takes them. This orchestration, and the overlap between membership and friendship, gives Ancient Infinity Orchestra a sound that is at once expansive and intimate, earthy, and cosmic, constantly shifting yet grounded in shared intention. The attention to intention and their inviting sonic world connects the music to artists ranging from Alabaster dePlume to Gondwana label boss Matthew Halsall and draws on inspiration from the revered elders of so-called Spiritual jazz: Art Ensemble of Chicago, Pharoah Saunders, Coltrane (Alice and John), and Don Cherry.

The deep roots of Ancient Infinity Orchestra can be traced back to Ozzy’s childhood. After attending a Buddhist primary school in Brighton, where kids were encouraged to take part in improvised performances during assembly, Ozzy grew up in rural Lincolnshire. By the age of 11 he was teaching himself guitar and percussion and playing in his grandma’s church. At 17 he joined Boston Youth Jazz Orchestra, and then attended Leeds College of Music to study composition. It was here that in 2017 a group of musicians agreed to join seven-hour rehearsals, twice a week, in the shared house that became Ancient Infinity Orchestra’s first HQ. Gradually, the Orchestra became a grounding force in the emerging jazz scene in Leeds

Their debut, River of Light, was a vibrant celebration of togetherness recorded in three days and released on Gondwana in 2023. A Maida Vale session for Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show brought them to a broader audience, as did bookings at North Sea Jazz Festival and We Out Here. Their music can be described as melody-driven improvised music, made by people who are deep into different types of traditional music, including folk, jazz and classical. “The tunes are a vessel,” Lead Ozzy Moysey says, “with everyone doing their thing. It exists so that my friends can be musically fulfilled.”

On top of the musicality, communality, and expression, It’s Always About Love is also a study in simplicity, stripping away excess to uncover something pure, warm, and human. Highlights include ‘Chant for Don Cherry’, which he describes as a ‘campfire style’ thank you to Cherry himself and which features high-colour piano lines and gently propellant guitars. “His beautiful, organic music-making deeply affected me. He had a direct link to the magic and he left so much music for us.” ‘The Seeker’ features intricate arrangements where a chorus of voices swoop around the instrumentalists before dropping into an irresistible groove – one for those who loved Floating Points’ collaboration with Pharoah Saunders. Penultimate tune ‘Old Friends’ is a celebration of communality and connection, with players and singers allowing joy to permeate every aspect of the song, with collective whoops and impromptu applause kept from the original recording for us to revel in.

Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a gathering of voices, traditions, and energies converging into something timeless. Their music is a journey inward and outward, always reaching toward the universal.

The final word, though, goes to Ozzy. “There is a need for love and connectedness. You pour the love you have into the music and people listening can feel it”

TALKER, ACRE THRILLS, and PURPLE ON TIME U.S. MAPLE

Talker

DC164 LP

Acre Thrills

DC208 LP

Purple On Time

DC250 LP

Starting in the mid-90s, the U.S. Maple saga was rent open, seam by seam, over ten long, sweaty years, like a ripple of mirages exploding up around the bend. Theirs was a dues-paid elevation of good old rock ‘n roll values that reached dizzyingly high, past the blunt force of their immediate 80s90s forebears and the magisterial arc of the venerated classic rockers before them. Their music is a rapacious, constantly morphing ooze through which can be sighted gristled flecks and shards of glam, punk, blues, metal, funk, jazz and other denuded musical formations to be grabbed upon and squeezed til the juice runs down your leg.

Talker, their Drag City debut, came on in the summer of 1999, its discrete shades of soundscape yawning like an open fly, dangling like shirttails through silence into previously unimagined spaces of width and depth. Having Swans’ Michael Gira on to produce was big, but bigger still was the group’s vigilant sense of what they were up to at that exact moment, a sequence of ‘back to school’ reflections with singer Al Johnson as your skeezy JD/Virgilian guide. Their tactile cloak of intimacies/detritus/little jokes/lucid dreams/vast emptiness was the perfect cover for a deceptive populism.

Released in April 2001, Acre Thrills is the most danceable, sensual and subcutaneous of all their offerings, “Ma Digital” their most kicking song EVER. It ain’t alone captured by Brian Paulson, the workings of the trio within the quartet were greased to absolute slickness, with Todd Rittmann/Mark Shippy ’s guitars and Pat Samson’s drums collectively divining and conquering the songs’ rhythm and harmony, while also playing in what appeared to be their own private imaginations. With his signature succession of consumptive wheezes and acid-tongued utterances, Al Johnson for some, the most unlikely front man of the rock ‘n roll era (and to others, their own private Jim Morrison) drew it all together immaculately.

Their final LP, recorded with Jeremy Lemos, Purple On Time dropped in late 2003, and found new drummer Adam Vida cannily replacing the fairly departed Pat Samson. With consolidations and developments heavy on the ground, the band once more surged and retarded in near-orchestral precision, as Johnson's voice swooped through fresh ranges. The songs were tangy, more rock than ever, yet just as potent when it came to drawing forth that thrusting, demented hip-shake that they induced in their faithful.

In 2024, Fu Manchu released their 14th studio album, The Return of Tomorrow, and embarked on a world tour to bring the new music to the fans. The band felt that these shows and these songs would be special, so they recorded the performances. When they got home and listened, they were so inspired that they decided to release an album compiled from these shows.

The Return Of…Live is their first official live album in 20 years and includes some fan favorites including “Eatin’ Dust” and “Hell On Wheels” along with “Loch Ness Wrecking Machine,” “Hands Of The Zodiac” and the title track of The Return Of Tomorrow.

Scott Hill, lead vocals/guitarist/founder comments “These 9 songs were recorded during our 2024 The Return Of Tomorrow UK/European tour. We had a great time at all of the shows and the crowds were amazing. We have been lucky enough to tour for the past 35 years and the songs on this album are some of our favorite old ones and new ones.”

The album was mixed by longtime Fu Manchu producer/mixer, Jim Monroe (Adolescents, Ignite) and mastered by Carl Saff. The vinyl pressing is a limited edition of 2000 on white vinyl with blue, purple and orange splatter

Limited Yellow Vinyl (750 copies)

It’s been a long time coming but influential indiepop band Heavenly are releasing a brand new 7” single. (A full album will follow in February 2026.)

Portland Town is as effervescent a pop song as any of Heavenly’s past recordings, with duelling vocals from Amelia and Cathy; looping, twanging, ‘how-did-he-do-that’ guitar escapades from Peter, and a super-catchy melody. As so often with Heavenly, though, the lyrics have real bite. The song embraces those who find themselves on the margins of a hostile world where maleness, straightness and conformity are in the ascendant. So why Portland? It has always been a sanctuary – one of those places where difference is celebrated, a place where, as the song puts it, anyone can fit in. The B side is a cover version of a much-loved Only Ones song, ‘Someone Who Cares’. Heavenly celebrate the release of Portland Town with a show at Islington Assembly Hall, London on 19th July, as part of the Skep Wax Weekender. Heavenly are: Amelia Fletcher (guitar, vocals), Cathy Rogers (guitar, vocals), Rob Pursey (bass), Peter Momtchiloff (guitar), Ian Button (drums).

World of Echo

World Of Echo announces the reissue of two remastered albums by Japanese guitarist and songwriter Naoki Zushi, 1988’s Paradise, and 2005’s III. Two classics of Japanese psychedelia, both Paradise and III were originally released on Org Records, the imprint of Shinji Shibayama of acid-folk group Nagisa Ni Te, with whom Zushi has guested on second guitar for decades. Both intimate and expansive, rich with revelatory songwriting and blasted, sky-scouring guitar, these reissues return these albums to print for the first time since the 2000s. It’s the first time III has been officially released on vinyl, with an extra, previously unreleased track, “Under The June Moonlight.”

Recorded in Kyoto’s Townhouse Studios in mid 1987, Paradise emerged from a scene in Kansai, Japan that was embracing the idiosyncrasies of 1970s singer-songwriters, the soaring solos of early seventies psychedelia, and the DIY impulse of 1980s post-punk. While Zushi’s musical history stretched back to the early eighties – he was a founding member of Hijokaidan – he found his feet with groups like Hallelujahs and Idiot O’Clock.

Paradise appeared two years after that Hallelujahs album and share much the same membership – Zushi’s backing band on several of the songs includes Shibayama on drums and Ken-Ichi Takayama (aka Idiot) on electric guitar, though just as often, Zushi plays all the instruments himself. The coordinates here are widereaching – you can hear the volume and intensity of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the slow-motion magic of Galaxie 500, the idiosyncratic spirit of The Only Ones, all mixed up with tender guitar miniatures and stumbling garage-psych-pop moves.

Seven years later, Zushi released III. Perhaps his masterpiece, it’s already been bootlegged on vinyl, but this reissue is the real deal. The album was recorded at Studio Nemu over seven years, and sees Zushi backed by Shibayama (bass) and Masako Takeda (drums), his erstwhile bandmates in Nagisa Ni Te. By this stage, Zushi had started to really stretch out, and many of the songs on III swoon languorously, taking their sweet time to say what they need to say. It’s rich with lovely, melancholy songs. You can hear traces of everything from Syd Barrett’s The Madcap Laughs, through seventies private press loner folk, to the slow-burn meanderings of the likes of early Low or Damon & Naomi.

‘Acid & Ecstasy’ is the ninth solo album from musical provocateur Thighpaulsandra, and his first release since 2019’s Practical Electronics.

Welcome to another deep dive into Thighpaulsandra’s salacious sound-world. A double album opus, Acid and Ecstasy synaptically sabres a host of immersive soundscaping, raucous rock moments and lyrically sharpened balladry we’ve all come to expect from this troubled troubadour plus plenty of fleshy surprise. Seven weighty tracks that potently tangle you up in the best of ways and chauffeur you around an eclectic circus of unadulterated genius. Limited purple vinyl (400 copies)

2025 is a special Britpop anniversary year, and Swansea Sound are keen to celebrate this summer’s coming together of every single music-lover in the UK with the release of their new single Oasis v Blur.

The song probably sounds more like The Fall getting into bed with The Sweet, but that’s just the way it turned out.

The B side, Pacio’r Fan, is about a journey back to a remembered teenage time, when idealism still burned and the world was full of potential. It is a wistful song, but it’s hopeful too: the idealistic flame is still there if you seek it out.

The release date of Oasis v Blur coincides with Swansea Sound’s live performance at the reasonablypriced Skep Wax Weekender, alongside label-mates including Sassyhiya, The Gentle Spring, Jeanines and Heavenly. Swansea Sound have released two albums, several singles and have recorded live radio sessions for BBC6Music and WFMU (New York). They are Hue Williams and Amelia Fletcher (who both sang in The Pooh Sticks), Rob Pursey (in Heavenly with Amelia), Bob Collins (of The Dentists), Ian Button (The Night Mail, Papernut Cambridge, Death In Vegas ) and artist Catrin James (The Loves).

NEW RELEASES

Street Date: 10.17.25 | Order Date: 9.26.25

Undoubtedly one of the most important and influential electronic artists to have emerged in popular music, the sonic misfit from Cornwall, the Aphex Twin, released a breathtaking slew of early singles and albums from 1991 onwards (and continues to present day). The first clutch of groundbreaking works came on the legendary Belgium label R&S Records and were collected on a compilation album ‘Classics’, released in 1995, and followed the global success of the timeless album ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’.

‘Classics’ receives a long overdue vinyl & CD re-press for 2025, with a fresh vinyl cut by acclaimed mastering engineer Beau Thomas, and a R&S Records sticker sheet inserted into the LP sleeves including cover artwork of the two singles ‘Digeridoo’ and ‘Xylem Tube’ EP which are both featured on this compilation album.

‘Digeridoo’ was released on the R&S Records label in 1992 and originally peaked at #55 in the UK singles chart in May of that year. Over the last 33 years the track has become one of the essential Aphex Twin tracks in a gargantuan catalogue that continues to amaze and inspire. Released as a 4 track EP that also included early Aphex productions (now classics) including the industrial, acidic clang of ‘Flap Head’ and hyperbolic futurism of ‘Isopropanol’, the release cemented a relationship with the R&S label that went on to release the ‘Xylem Tube’ EP and the pivotal album ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’ in the same year.

The ’Classics’ album features both the ‘Digeridoo’ and ‘Xylem Tube’ EP singles, plus ‘Analogue Bubblebath 1’, ‘Metapharstic’ (originally released on the album Mayday - A New Chapter Of House And Techno '92), two Aphex remixes of Mescalinum United’s ‘We Have Arrived’ from 1992 and ‘Digeridoo (Live In Cornwall, 1990)’

Title: Medicine Show: I Know What You Like (Deluxe Edition) / Medicine Show (40th Anniversary Edition)

Release date: 2025-10-17

Territory: Worldwide

Label: Down There Records

The Dream Syndicate – Medicine Show: I Know What You Like (Deluxe Edition) [4CD bookback] + Medicine Show (40th Anniversary Edition) [LP reissue]

This deluxe Medicine Show reissue arrives as an expansive 4xCD box set, collecting 42 Dream Syndicate tracks that span rare live recordings, radio sessions, rehearsals, demos, and previously unreleased material from 1983 to 1984. Alongside it, the original album returns as a standalone LP (featuring the original 8 tracks only – no extras, no DL code), all via Down There Records (distributed by Fire Records).

In 1982, The Dream Syndicate started their own record company, Down There Records, to release their self-titled four-song twelve-inch EP, which included the first versions of ‘When You Smile’ and ‘That’s What You Always Say’. They went on to sign with Slash for The Days of Wine and Roses, followed by A&M for the Medicine Show album. After years, the band has earned the right to reissue Medicine Show as a 42-song, 4xCD set featuring 29 unreleased recordings from the 1983 to 1984 era. For this special occasion, The Dream Syndicate are resurrecting their Down There label, which will be distributed by Fire Records.

Medicine Show has always been a controversial album, even before it was recorded. The indie rock darlings became the first Paisley Underground band to sign to a major label, hire a mainstream rock producer, change bass players, and spend months recording the album - after having banged out their previous one, The Days of Wine and Roses, in mere hours.

What this new box set reveals is that, as a live band, they were on fire. For the first time ever, the complete WXRT radio broadcast from the original reel-to-reel master tape is included. This is accompanied by rehearsal and live tapes of Kendra, recorded just before her departure.

It’s all part of the story: early, primitive versions of original songs, plenty of cover versions that the band mangled into something new, and a journey of finding themselves along the way. Thankfully, shows from venues like CBGB’s, Zaders, and Soap Creek reveal some incendiary magic. Beyond the live audio, the album itself has now been remastered from the original analog tapes.

Like many psychologically complex albums, Medicine Show took time to truly settle into listeners’ minds. It’s long overdue, but it has finally arrived.

John Darnielle’s third 4AD full-length album as The Mountain Goats, The Sunset Tree, released in 2005, presented a deeply confessional and emotionally vivid narrative drawn from the depths of the prolific songwriter’s turbulent personal history. Twenty years on, Darnielle revisits the career highlight record with a reissue dubbed The Sunset Tree (20th Anniversary Edition). Composed of 2025 Abbey Road Remasters and featuring the original artwork with a new OBI strip designed by Chris Bigg, it is due for release on Limited Edition Apricot Coloured Vinyl and CD on October 17.

Upon its arrival, The Sunset Tree — recorded with producer John Vanderslice in Northern California towards the end of 2004, and featuring performers Peter Hughes (bass, backing vocals, guitar), Franklin Bruno (piano, guitar), Erik Friedlander (cello), Alex DeCarville (drums), and Scott Solter (keyboards) — emerged as the most coherent and richly rewarding album in the Mountain Goats’ wildly extensive discography, and it retains that legacy now.

It’s a mark of Darnielle’s extraordinary fertility that, of the 800-plus songs he has recorded, only a handful directly concern his own life experience; The Sunset Tree’s 13 tracks, written after Darnielle’s stepfather passed away in December 2003, are the bulk of this small subsection. It’s a collection of songs about the house that Darnielle grew up in and the people who lived there — an ensemble cast which includes Darnielle himself, an ex-girlfriend, his mother, stepfather, and sister; old friends and old enemies. “I’ve put off writing about this stuff for years,” he said at the time of its release, “because I’m a little squeamish about milking my own trauma for art, and getting good songs rather than cry-fests from these experiences is a really excruciating process. And also because my stepfather was still alive.”

Experienced as a whole rather than as a series of terrifying, frozen moments, The Sunset Tree is a redemptive rather than a remorseless record. As the liner notes say : “you are going to make it out of there alive.”

PRAISE FOR THE SUNSET TREE

“America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist”

-The New Yorker

“Bob Dylan proved that Vitriol and acoustic guitars could go together, but the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle has taken confessional folk music to angry new depths.”

- Rolling Stone

“John Darnielle’s written some of the toughest and most open-souled music of his lo-fi outlet’s oft-brilliant history.” - SPIN

“Mountain Goats auteur John Darnielle continues to write songs that could inspire a season’s worth of TV-movie melodramas... the results can be extraordinary. Get the man an orchestra now.”

- Entertainment Weekly

The Barr Brothers are survivors Flying just below the radar since 2011, their elusiveness is as much a part of the design as it is a cultural curiosity The brothers, Brad and Andrew Barr, are a testament to the staying power of family in music. Grizzly Bear never broke up. In the six years that have passed since their most recent shows, the four members who first drifted into the group two decades ago as loose friends and even total strangers— Chris Bear, Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen, Chris Taylor—have drifted out into other things. They’ve made other music, pursued other careers, cultivated other families, lived other lives beyond the bounds of being this band. And now, for the first time since 2019, these four musicians and friends will drift back into Grizzly Bear, to test the ties that made them one of this century’s most engrossing and beloved acts and see where else those old connections may yet

lead. Because Grizzly Bear never broke up, their first shows in six years are not a reunion; they are a simultaneous point of arrival and departure, their next destination still unknown.

That sort of open-ended approach, after all, is what still makes Grizzly Bear one of this young century’s defining acts. Twenty years ago, they quickly morphed from a lo-fi songwriter project to a full band with an instantly singular sound, uncanny harmonies slipping around arrangements that paired the glow of a chamber orchestra to the grit of a rock group. They helped to redefine what was

possible within indie rock by balancing lushness with looseness, a technical excellence with an emotional openness. Their musical traces remain ubiquitous, bits of their unorthodox perspective on sound and texture now part of the firmament. Hearing these songs live in 2025 will feel less like shaking hands with the past, then, than seeing their fingerprints in the present, as if for the first time.

These live shows will be accompanied by color vinyl album reissues of Yellow House, Veckatimest, Shields and Painted Ruins.

PIXIES - DEMOS

“A sketch of an unvarnished, restless band, coolly bashing out its world-domination plan"- Rolling Stone

The legendary Purple Tapes- the first ever Pixies recordings from 1987, officially reissued with new artwork and liner notes detailing the early history of the band. Pressed on Limited Edition colour-incolour purple & black vinyl.

Includes the original recordings of ‘Here Comes Your Man’, ‘Broken Face’, ‘Down To The Well’ & ‘Rock A My Soul’.

Formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts, Pixies are one of the key acts associated with the late 1980’s American alternative rock scene and were also considered a big influence on acts such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead.

“These songs complete the picture of where the Pixies began, while hinting broadly at where they would end up – as a band very much unto their own”.

The Subways Celebrate 20 Years with Career-Spanning Collection ‘When I’m With You’, released 17 October 2025. th

Two decades after their explosive debut Young For Eternity, Gold-certified UK rock trio The Subways mark their 20th anniversary with When I’m With You — a dynamic compilation capturing the heart and grit of one of Britain’s most enduring live bands. Alongside the release, the band announce a major UK and European headline tour: The Subways For Eternity

Bursting into life with debut single Oh Yeah, the tracklist plays like a perfectly curated live set — The Subways' natural habitat — featuring classics like With You, I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say, and Kalifornia. Fan favourites We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang sit alongside highlights from 2023’s acclaimed Uncertain Joys, including You Kill My Cool and the title track.

Closing with the anthemic Rock & Roll Queen, the band’s cultural impact is undeniable — from Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla and The OC to global ad campaigns and iconic US TV performances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Craig Ferguson

When I’m With You also features two brand new songs: I Need To Feel You Closer, premiered during their 2023 tour, and Passenger’s Side, both marking the recording debut of new drummer Camille Phillips, who joins founding members Billy Lunn (vocals/guitar) and Charlotte Cooper (vocals/bass) following the departure of Josh Morgan

The collection showcases work with legendary producers Butch Vig (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths), Ian Broudie (The Lightning Seeds), and Billy Lunn himself A vital celebration of past and present, When I’m With You reaffirms The Subways' place at the heart of UK alternative rock

THE CULT CHOICE OF WEAPON

“Their best album in years – probably decades.” – Record Collector

Pressed on Limited Edition colour-in-colour effect vinyl: LP1 red & black, LP2 purple & black in a Gatefold Sleeve.

Originally released in 2012, Choice of Weapon was hailed asThe Cult’s most vital work since their ’80s heyday – a powerful, mature record that proved Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy still had fire to burn. Recorded in the California desert with Chris Goss at the helm and finished by long-time collaborator Bob Rock, the album channels the lush guitar layers, earworm melodies, and gothic swagger fans love, while venturing into fresh territory – from the blues of A Pale Horse to the stomping drama of Honey From a Knife.

Driven by the lead single For the Animals, Choice of Weapon earned iTunes’ Rock Album of the Year in 2012 and debuted at #1 on the UK Rock Chart. Out of print since the original pressing, it has become one ofThe Cult’s most sought-after modern releases.

SEEFEEL Pure, Impure

Expanded version

▶ Reimagined artwork

▶ Remastered at Abbey Road ▶ includes previously unreleased demo

Seefeel is a pioneering, experimental electronic band. Formed in London in the early 1990s, they emerged as one of the most innovative bands bridging shoegaze and electronic music, known for their textured soundscapes, minimalist rhythms and ambient sensibilities.

This new, expanded version of Pure, Impure brings together Seefeel’s three classic EPs. Remastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studios, this 11-track collection also features newly reimagined artwork. This release will be available as a 2XLP or CD.

The three EPs that now comprise the release, More Like Space, Plainsong, and Time to Find Me, include Aphex Twin mixes and a previously unreleased demo of “Moodswing”.

Their 1993 EP Pure, Impure, released on Too Pure, marked a pivotal moment in their evolution, offering a more stripped-down, hypnotic approach than their debut Quique. The EP’s tracks explore loop-based structures, subtle melodic shifts and the fusion of organic guitar tones with machine-like precision. Pure, Impure reflects the band’s growing interest in dub, ambient techno, and post-rock aesthetics. The EP served as a blueprint for their future work, signaling a deeper dive into electronic experimentation. With its understated beauty and genre-defying sound, the EP remains a key release in Seefeel’s catalog, with the upcoming remaster set to be a must in any experimental music fan’s collection.

On their upcoming LP, ‘Dreams Go’, POLIÇA deliver their most emotionally resonant and texturally rich work to date a poignant meditation on loss, resilience, and the fragile beauty of holding on. Written and recorded in the shadow of bassist Chris Bierden’s glioblastoma diagnosis, the album is both elegy and act of preservation, capturing the band at a moment of profound transition.

The LP is a collection of eight new songs recorded at Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota, marking the band’s final sessions with Chris Bierden before he lost the ability to play. The record pulses with a raw, elegiac energy, a testament to the chemistry that defined POLIÇA’s first decade.

Though born of grief, Dreams Go is anything but static. It breathes, shimmers, and ultimately insists on the power of making art in the face of uncertainty. Available in indie exclusive red vinyl, standard black and CD, ‘Dreams Go’ stands as a moving testament to the band’s creative bond, and to Bierden’s indelible role within it.

RON GALLO checkmate

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 17, 2025

The very last day of recording the album that became checkmate, Ron Gallo wrote and recorded the title track. Which, in his words, half-jokingly, is "my first true love song that also happens to be the best love song ever written". It encapsulates the entire purpose of the album which takes his previous motto - "The world is fucked, but the universe is inside you" and changes it to "The world is ending, what can I hold on to?".

After years of navigating artistic reinvention and resisting change, Ron Gallo arrives at his latest album, checkmate, with a newfound clarity and sense of purpose. Stripped down and direct, checkmate marks a reset: a shedding of old selves, old anger, and the need for introspection. Social commentary has always been a driving force behind Gallo’s music, and checkmate finds the bridge between personal inner dialogues and cultural analysis, grasping the vulnerability he once avoided.

What remains here is distilled: raw thoughts about love, identity, and survival in a collapsing world. Gallo calls it “a process to kill off my old self,” a release from years of hiding, whether it’s behind a comic veil or a wall of instruments and noise. With checkmate, he finds himself aligned with a new audience who have found his music through social media riffs turned viral smashes, 7am Songs, who come with no preconceived notions—only a desire to connect. The personal vulnerability found in these songs are far more relatable than Gallo could have first imagined. Inner dialogues we all seem to be having, but struggling to find the words for, until now.

ICE (LAFAYETTEAFRO-ROCKBAND)

DiscoFrankenstein

From the crypts of Parisian funk obscurity comes the long-lost Halloween holy grail, Disco Frankenstein from Ice AKA Lafayette Afro Rock Band A teasing album of horror-disco oddities originally released as a compilation a misnomer cloaked in mystery, as the tracks themselves hail from the group’s playful experiments in the mid-to-late ’70s.

This album unearths a twisted treasure trove of grooves, originally scattered across obscure side-projects and international pressings, brought back to life by Strut on blood-soaked vinyl exclusively for Halloween 2025

Originally released as a 1976 Japan-only compilation featuring the Lafayette Afro Rock Band under a plethora of pseudonyms Sweet Exorcist, Captain Dax, Hot Blood, Krispie and Co., and more, the release was masterminded by producer Pierre Jaubert and led by bandleader Frank Abel with the funk-virtuosity of the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band group, the minds behind the much sampled ‘Soul Makossa’ and ‘Malik’ albums.

Disco Frankenstein represents the band at their most creative layering wah-wah guitars, thunderous Afrobeat rhythms, and creepy-crawly synths into a funky stew of horror-disco gold. Tracks like “Dr. Beezar (Soul Frankenstein),” “Disco Vampire,” “Zeke the Zombie,” and “Igor’s Reggae” blur the line between Halloween novelty and dancefloor fire, conjured with full seriousness by studio wizards who knew how to raise the funk.

Resurrected by Strut Records and remastered by The Carvery, this compilation finally gets the deluxe treatment it deserves: pressed on limited blood-stained vinyl just in time for Halloween 2025

LUTHER DICKINSON

VOLUME 1

While playing for Phil Lesh, I became friends with his son, Grahame, and we started booking shows called Dead Blues, a Phil and Friends offshoot that used the traditional blues and folk songs from the Dead catalog as a vehicle to bring new musicians from the blues and rock scene into Phil’s orbit. For example, we brought Phil together for the first time with the Blind Boys of Alabama, Charlie Musselwhite, G Love, JD Simo and many others new to Phil’s community Dead Blues was a great concept for live shows but I never considered making an album until I met singer Datrian Johnson, one of the most moving singers I’ve ever worked with John Medeski brought Datrian into the community and we instantly became friends and collaborators and began recording the songs on Dead Blues Volume 1, reinterpreting the American classics. The tracks feature North Mississippi Alumni Cody Dickinson and Rayfield “Ray Ray” Hollowman, as well as old friends from Memphis, Paul Taylor/New Memphis Colorways also on drums, bass and guitars and Steve Selvidge on Space Funk guitar I found that writing the music on bass (then adding keys and guitar) led the music down a funky, jazzy avenue and Datrian worked his magic, reinterpreting the classic blues lyrics and melodies with his soulful vocals.

Bob Corritore & Friends

EARLY BLUES SESSIONS

Definitive Recordings from 1984 to 2007 with Remixed and Unreleased Tracks!

This compilation is a brilliant survey of some of the early recorded work showcasing Bob Corritore‘s dedication to recording the realdeal blues by it’s originators. Most of the artists featured on this album are no longer with us, but their recordings will live on forever. Bob always had his eye on the prize and took great artists into the studio whenever possible.

Once he opened the Rhythm Room in 1991 he realized that there would be a pipeline of amazing artists coming through to play at his nightclub. He took the opportunity not only to book them, but to offer them some additional work in the recording studio.

STREET DATE:

Years later, the results of those efforts are here for us to celebrate. Legends such as Lowell Fulson, Little Milton, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Lockwood, Sam Lay, Henry Gray, Pinetop Perkins and others grace this album with powerful performances. And Bob Corritore was there to wrap his song-serving harmonica work and production around each of the tracks. The results are a survey of the brilliance of the old-school style of blues. Thank you, Bob Corritore for preserving the blues legacy with your caring, artful touch.

Blawan SickElixir

STREET DATE: October 17th, 2025

Blawan’s new album SickElixir, released through XL Recordings, is a comprehensive realisation of the sound that he’s been pursuing. It’s a record that he perceives to be his debut full-length and a deeply personal creative endeavour, one that helped him process family trauma, emotional upheaval, and the loss of friends.

Growing up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Blawan (real name Jamie Roberts) was obsessed with playing the drums, locking himself away for hours on end into an insular world of permanent percussion. When he was 14, he started working in a maggot farm and he credits the clanging sound of the farm’s industrial mincer as an influence on the way his music sounds – you can hear the echoes of rattling machinery in the fierce, meticulous drum programming that’s become his signature. After playing in various metal bands, Roberts’ musical horizons began to expand through visits to the West Indian Centre in Leeds, where he was introduced to techno, dubstep and everything in between.

Blawan emerged as a solo artist at the turn of the 2010s with EPs on cult labels such as Hinge Finger and Hessle Audio. He’s received widespread critical acclaim for his personal projects, while also forging a career as one half of live techno act Karenn and the metalinspired band Persher, both formed in partnership with his close collaborator Pariah.

SickElixir cements his position as one of Britain’s most unique, pioneering artists, operating firmly in a lane of his own but in the same creative league as artists such as Aphex Twin, Bjork or Thom Yorke. It’s a manifesto for the way he sees music and sees himself, a journey through his own past but sonically a vision for the future.

Written over several years and recorded in Los Angeles, New York, and Vermont, the album explores themes of freedom, queerness, memory, and radical presence. With collaborators like producer Adam Schatz (Japanese Breakfast), bassist Spencer Zahn, and guitarists meg duffy (Hand Habits) and Carly Bond (Meernaa), the album trades perfectionism for connection.

Nuzzle Follow, For Now (30th Anniversary Reissue)

Nuzzle began as a trio; Nate Dalton (guitar), Simon Fabela (bass) and Ricardo Reano (drums) in Rosemead, CA in 1991 before ultimately settling in Santa Cruz. In 1993 Nate’s older brother Andrew joined on second guitar and switched to vocals early in 1994, solidifying their lineup.

By the mid 90s Nuzzle had already released several 45s, completed a successful US tour with Fisticuffs Bluff, and had become staples in a loosely knit but deeply felt west coast scene anchored by Kill Rock Stars Records in Olympia and Gravity Records in San Diego. The buzz they generated helped them find their way onto bills with bands like Evergreen, Unwound, Lync, Bikini Kill, Modest Mouse, The VSS, Clikatat Ikatowi, and more.

In 1995 they released their debut LP, Follow, For Now, on Youth Strike Chord. Recorded in a sweaty flurry at a vital moment in the 90s post-hardcore scene, Follow, For Now is raw, loose, and fierce. Less than 1,000 copies were originally pressed and songs like “The Sorting That Evens Things Out” and “Newfoundland,” became the band’s most ballyhooed.

Remixed and remastered for its 30th Anniversary Follow, For Now returns with renewed clarity; capturing the band at their creative peak. Straddling the line between hardcore and the evolving mid-90s underground sound, its eight tracks helped define a genre and cement Nuzzle’s place within the era.

Follow, For Now has been remixed by Liam Nelson and remastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios. Limited to just 250 units on Opaque Candy Apple Red Vinyl with new artwork and a printed inner sleeve by Sonny Kay. Available digitally and on vinyl through Solid Brass Records.

A RUPTURE A CANYON A BIRTH

RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 17, 2025

What’s a girl to do with a near-death experience? In a way, A RUPTURE A CANYON A BIRTH began in April 2023 on a stretch of Massachusetts highway, when a semi-truck slammed into the broken-down tour van holding Carlyn Bezic and five other musicians. Somewhat miraculously, no one died—this isn’t that kind of story–and while waiting in the tow lot Bezic and her tourmates, battered but vibrating with adrenaline, decided the show must go on.

Bezic returned home, broke off her relationship of nearly a decade, and decided to see a doctor about a persistent raspiness in her voice that didn’t seem to be improving. Exactly a year and a day after the crash, she was diagnosed with stage one cancer on her left vocal cord. By the end of that summer she’d undergone two successful surgeries that left her voice intact, but came with a serious caveat: there is a significant possibility of regrowth, and close monitoring is essential. There are no guarantees.

Written in the aftermath of these life-altering events, and recorded during the subsequent healing processes of both operations, A RUPTURE A CANYON A BIRTH exists under the assumption that nothing is guaranteed. No one can promise the van won’t break down and you’ll live to see the next show, or that you’ll stay in any relationship forever, or a cluster of cells won’t go rogue on top of the instrument central to your art. Whatever holds our lives together is under no obligation to remain solid.

The Irish word Rún can mean secret, mystery, or love, or perhaps some elusive combination of the three, reflecting the many aspects of life that defy easy explanation. In wrestling with these, it can become necessary to commit oneself entirely, to jump in at the deep end in search of the vibrations and feelings at hand. This is where the band Rún comes in. The debut album of Rún is the result of three powerful artists – Tara Baoth Mooney, Diarmiud MacDiarmada and Rian Trench – locking horns and forming a spiritually intrepid outfit who alchemies experimental methods and improvisatory states to reach intimidating heights of sonic and psychic intensity. An extremely diverse range of musical influences also make their presence felt here, from William Basinski and Pauline Oliveros to Om, Coil and The Necks.A centrepiece of the album drawn from such is the potent ‘Terror Moon’, on which a thunderous percussive backdrop is matched in intensity by potent chants and mantric ululations from Tara as well a ferocious tumult of layered noise and fevered invective. ‘Your Death My Body’ meanwhile projects exorcising vocal meditations through a musical prism that touches on the lineage of spectral beat-driven atmospherics that connects Portishead and Tara Clerkin Trio. The stakes are high in the creative realm of Rún, with the record’s ritualistic approach leading it to the territory of the truly elemental and primal. Yet this is a record with the metaphysical firepower to cleanse the spirit even whilst it stares darkness full in the face.

Faten Kanaan – Diary of a Candle

Minimal and nuanced, Diary of a Candle is a consoling, melodic suite from acclaimed experimental composer, musician, and producer Faten Kanaan. On this album Faten uses counterpoint as a narrative tool to create music that is mysterious, smudgy, and deeply melodic. From the repetitive structures of modern minimalism and early music/baroque influences - to more languid textural ebbs and tides, there's a warmth in her use of synthesizers that gives her work a curiously timeless feel. Composing intuitively, her music creates its own world - one that isn't easily categorised.

Diary of a Candle is punctuated with tender woodwinds and richly-layered strings, touched by the hazy atmospheres of 1970s/1980s films. Its understated heart-on sleeve romanticism follows the rhythm of nature: it bends in the breeze, drifts through the air, and settles on the ground. The ambiance is not an escapism, but the re-focusing of a lens through which humans are no longer the protagonists. Instead, a landscape's intimate details become the central figures.

With the sparseness of Hiroshi Yoshimura's 1982 album 'Music for Nine Post Cards' as a starting-point influence, Faten's music exudes a wistful yet hopeful sentiment, honouring moments of beauty in the world around us. Some of the album titles are inspired by East-Asian rites and folkloric superstitions, often related to nature.
