WIN-RIVER MINI MART GOES THE EXTRA MILE FOR GRAND REOPENING

November 25, 2024 marked the Grand Re-Opening for the Win-River Mini Mart Refresh. The community was invited to come celebrate and, with a purchase, was entered into a raffle drawing for free fuel, hotel stays, and dining dollars at Win-River Resort & Casino. The morning kicked off with a red ribbon cutting, followed by Billy and Patrick radio duo onsite, while Harbor Wholesale cooked and handed out free hot dogs. Win-River Mini Mart Management would like to thank all the vendors that held true to the construction timeline and upholding quality of work, the customers that tolerated our tight quarters while construction was taking place, and our team members that embraced the process and maintained the exceptional level of customer service that they show daily. The Refresh truly would not have been such a success without the teamwork portrayed, by all involved, to achieve the common goal. From all of us at the Win-River Mini Mart, if you haven’t been by yet, we extend an invitation to come visit and check out the new amenities and beautifully designed store.

Shasta County Proposes Culturally Respectful Road

Name Replacements

Shasta County, CA – On October 29, 2024, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing to discuss and receive feedback on proposed replacement names for four roads within Shasta County. Following the hearing, the Board adopted resolutions to select the proposed names for transmittal to the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CAGN), in accordance with California State Assembly Bill (AB) 2022. The bill found the term “Squaw” (Sq_”) to be “a racist and derogatory term”, requiring that it be removed from all geographic features and place names in the state of California and be replaced with new names.

The proposed new road names include:

• Bama’du Drive as the replacement name for "Sq_ Carpet Drive and Emergency Fire Escape Road"

• Blue Grass Trail as the replacement name for "Sq_ Grass Trail"

• K’etewala Trail as the replacement name for "Sq_ Springs Trail"

• Chali mem paniik Road as the replacement name for "Sq_ Valley Loop Road"

These new road names will now be reviewed by the CAGN for final approval, aligning with state and local efforts to update geographic names and better reflect the region’s heritage and values.

The Board’s decision is an important step in embracing inclusivity and cultural respect within Shasta County. By adopting these proposed replacement names, the County honors local Indigenous communities, acknowledges the historical significance of the area, and ensures that road names align with contemporary values and state mandates. This effort fosters a deeper connection to the land and its history while promoting unity and understanding within the community.

Shasta County remains committed to working with residents and stakeholders to create a welcoming and respectful environment for all, while recognizing the diverse cultural backgrounds that contribute to the County’s rich heritage.

TRIBAL YOUTH SHINE IN CIVIC AUDITORIUM

NUTCRACKER PERFORMANCE

REDDING RANCHERIA

Four talented Tribal member youth—Ember Hayward, Riverfox Lucero, Peyton Ramirez, and Hayden Ramirez—recently showcased their dance skills in the Nutcracker performance at the Civic Auditorium. This annual production, which combines professional traveling dancers with local youth, was an incredible opportunity for our Tribal youth to shine on stage.

Despite having only six weeks to prepare, the dancers mastered a variety of styles and delivered seamless performances alongside seasoned professionals. Their hard work and dedication truly paid off, as they amazed the audience with their talent, precision, and grace.

Ember Hayward, who performed as one of the mice, reflected on her experience, saying her favorite part was “seeing all of the different professionals and watching them dance.” She noted that one of the challenges was practicing without the professionals and then adapting to dancing with them when the time came. However, the transition was flawless, as Ember and her peers appeared completely in sync, delivering a performance that looked polished and well-rehearsed.

Riverfox Lucero, who also performed as a mouse, shared that her favorite part of the experience was “dancing on stage with her family watching.” This heartfelt connection to her loved ones made the performance even more special for her.

Sisters Hayden and Peyton Ramirez also shared their excitement about the experience. Both expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from professional dancers, noting that performing alongside them brought a sense of focus and seriousness to their preparation. Peyton especially enjoyed sharing the experience with her friends, while Hayden loved performing a Chinese culture-inspired dance.

This performance was another reminder of the importance of supporting and celebrating the arts within our community. Seeing our Tribal youth thrive in their passions, represent the Tribe with pride, and embrace the joy of performing is truly inspiring. Congratulations to Ember, Riverfox, Peyton, and Hayden for their outstanding achievements and for making the Tribe proud!

RECOGNIZING WORLD DIABETES DAY ACROSS THE REDDING RANCHERIA

REDDING RANCHERIA TRIBAL HEALTH SYSTEM

On November 14, we honor World Diabetes Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes, its challenges, and the importance of early intervention, management, and care. Observed globally, this day also marks the birthday of Dr. Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1921, forever changing the lives of those living with diabetes.

Diabetes impacts millions around the world, and awareness is critical in helping prevent, manage, and ultimately reduce its burden. Each year, World Diabetes Day highlights different aspects of care, focusing on the importance of accessible treatment, patient support, and educational outreach. This year’s theme centers on Diabetes and Well-being—a vital reminder that living well with diabetes requires comprehensive support and resources.

Redding Rancheria stands with those affected, and we are committed to supporting awareness, education, and prevention initiatives within our community. Let us use today to reflect on the progress made and the actions we can continue to take for a healthier tomorrow.
