REDDING RANCHERIA HEAD START & CHILD CARE: NEW PLAYGROUND REDDING RANCHERIA

The project was funded by Child Care Development Fund CCDF. The concept behind this design is to create a universal play space for all students and includes elements reflecting the culture of the Redding Rancheria. Child Care is working with the Redding Rancheria cultural department to incorporate native culture, language, history and traditions into the playground design.

We envision creating an outdoor, natural classroom to provide new opportunities for learning and creativity. The playground itself will include a diverse mix of equipment including a fabricated Wintu Bark House, a traditional Arbor to provide shade, sensory sand exploration, a new storage area, an outdoor kitchen, a garden area, new nature inspired play structure, climbing features, water play, drums and an art area.

The playground will support social distancing by creating outdoor classroom space, giving us potential to facilitate compliance with health and safety standards in response to COVID-19. Additional health and safety elements will be added which will include an outdoor handwashing station, covered areas for more shade and water features for cooling.

The playground renovation will support high-quality program standards for health, physical activity, and physical development as well as activities to support mental health including musical instruments. Drumming has been used as a traditional form of healing and mental health treatment to restore physical and mental well-being.

The playground renovation will improve the quality of child care services, child safety, child well-being, socialemotional development, kindergarten readiness and promote our culture and program goals.

Why it’s a Mistake: Anyone can get food poisoning. But some people are more likely to get sick and to have a more serious illness. This includes:    

Adults aged 65 and older Children younger than 5 years People who have health problems or who take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness (weakened immune systems) Pregnant women

Solution: People who are more likely to get food poisoning should not eat the following:    

Undercooked or raw animal products (such as meat, chicken, turkey, eggs, or seafood) Raw or lightly cooked sprouts Unpasteurized (raw) milk and juices Soft cheese (such as queso fresco), unless it is labeled as made with pasteurized milk

Why it’s a Mistake: Cooked food is safe only after it’s been cooked to a high enough temperature to kill germs.

Solution: Use a food thermometer to make sure you cook food to a safe internal temperature.       2

Don’t eat foods that contain raw or undercooked eggs, such as runny eggs, or homemade mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, and eggnog. Don’t eat raw (uncooked) dough or batter that contains either flour or eggs. ol tion: ut perishable foods in the refrigerator within hours or within hour if the food is e posed to a temperature over 90˚F (like in a hot car). Divide roasts and large portions of food, such as pots of stew or chili, into smaller containers so they will chill quickly. It’s OK to put warm or hot food into the refrigerator, as long as it’s packaged in small enough amounts that will cool quickly.

REDDING RANCHERIA HEAD START & CHILD CARE REDDING RANCHERIA

We are excited to announce the completion of our new Child Care Facility and the opportunity to enhance our current program, which includes all new learning materials and state of the art technology. We opened to students beginning on August 12, 2020. This center is a child care/ preschool program for Native American working families and will benefit our Redding Rancheria tribal members as well as the greater Native American community in Shasta County.

This project was fully funded by the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF).

CCDF, which is administered by the OCC- Office of Child Care, is the federal funding source for child care subsidies and allows low income families in obtaining child care so that they can work, while preparing their children to succeed in school. Our program serves Native American children ages 3-5 years.

We provide an educational component that is developmentally and culturally appropriate for the children served. We provide meals and snacks to children, parent education, referrals to health and social services for families, and staff development opportunities to employees.

Approximately 1.3 million children nationally receive CCDF child care subsidies each month.

CCDF made $8.1 billion available to states, territories, and tribes in fiscal year 2018. Of which, $358 million was allocated for Tribes. Tribes are allowed to use a portion of their funds to construct new child care facilities, which we chose to take advantage of.

The building is approximately 1200sq feet and includes one classroom, a staff/training room, an adult restroom, an ADA approved child restroom, a handwashing station in the classroom, a covered deck to be utilized as an outdoor classroom/play area and an ADA approved handicapped ramp. All of the construction was done by One Way Construction, a local contractor.

THE REDDING RANCHERIA IS ANNOUNCING THE BECHELLI LANE VACATUR LAWSUIT

THE TRIBE FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST CITY OF REDDING AND SHASTA LAND HOLDINGS, LLC. “The Redding Rancheria believes the City of Redding has tried to kill the Tribe’s Casino Relocation Project. During an unprecedented public health emergency in which small businesses and nonprofits are struggling to survive in our local community, the Redding City Council met in closed session to parcel off a tiny section of public property just north of the Tribe’s 1-5 property and sell it to an LLC with connections to Sierra Pacific and Red Emmerson. By selling this public property to a private entity with deep pockets, the City of Redding is trying to prevent commercial access to the Tribe’s 1-5 property, which could prove detrimental to the viability of the Casino Relocation Project. In taking this action, the City of Redding has circumvented the federal environmental review process for the project, and violated the California Streets and Highways Code, the California Surplus Land Act, and the California Environmental Quality Act. This blatant disregard for the law and good governance has left the Tribe with no other recourse but litigation. Attached is copy of the Tribe’s complaint against the City of Redding and Shasta Land Holdings, LLC. The Tribe looks forward to its day in court.”

Have you ever wondered where clean water comes from? Water comprises 70% of the earth, and meanwhile research says only 1% or less is clean potable water.

People use water worldwide 24/7 for various things like washing, eating, and even entertainment.

Our water cycle is where our clean water really comes from. Without the vast transport system our water wouldn’t ever be distilled. Once water is truly purified and is released onto us, it gathers itself in watersheds and underground networks. Keeping our soils pure as well as keeping the air clean we ensure our water to stay purified. Most of our clean water is said to be frozen on each of our “Polar Ice Caps.” With that in mind, watersheds and aquifers are pertinent to our survival.

REDDING RANCHERIA’S CENTRAL VALLEY HEALTHCARE The Redding Rancheria is happy to announce our new approximately 1800 square foot clinic with six exam rooms, in the City of Shasta Lake, opening in September 2020. Redding Rancheria has always taken pride in providing prompt, quality, professional and compassionate medical services to our community and is pleased to be able to extend the same quality of care to the City of Shasta Lake. Our new facility, both primary and urgent care will be located at 4174 Ashby Court and will begin by accepting 2000 new Medi-Cal and Partnership patients, often with same day appointments. Central Valley Health Care looks forward to serving the community of Shasta Lake City. The Ribbon Cutting for the expanded services to Shasta Lake City will take place in September.

We would like to congratulate our employee of the Month for August….Maggie Velazquez, Dental Hygiene Supervisor. The following reasons are why Maggie Velazquez received this award: Maggie has put in so much hard work and overtime in the past few months to get us through this difficult season. She made sure all of our health facilities have been adequately staffed and has put in tireless hours in a position she had to learn as she went. She stepped up and took on the role of staffing coordinator while we were on A and

B shifts. She is also an amazing hygienist who travels to Head Start and soon to Trinity to bring oral health care to native american children.

Connect with us @ HAPPY RETIREMENT The Redding Rancheria would like to take this opportunity to announce the retirement of Darrell Hovater. Darrell has been a dutiful member of the Redding Rancheria Family for nearly 14 years.

Although his departure is a loss for the Redding Rancheria, we are thrilled for him to enter into this exciting new chapter of life! His supervisor Karel Couch had this to say about him: “It has been a pleasure having worked with Darrell for the 14 years that he has been employed with Win-River Resort & Casino and then the Rancheria. Darrell could always be counted on to give it his best no matter what the task assigned to him was. Darrell was always good for a joke or a good story. He was also not afraid to speak his mind. That is a good thing in this department. Good luck in your new endeavors Darrell.”
