After being held off the open market since Rollin Deep Y118 sold on 2012, he will now be available to the entire Red Angus breed. Thistle Ridge and Silver Spur purchased Rollin Deep Y118 and have been excited about the impact he has had on their programs. Rollin Deep Y118 is a powerful sire that does the cow man things right. His pedigree is well known for producing powerful cattle with exceptional feet, udders and fleshing ability. Rollin Deep’s dam, Bieber Tilly 399W, has become a centerpiece in our ET program and his sire, Bieber Roosevelt, has become the cornerstone to our commercial customers, producing thick cattle with great dispositions. Rollin Deep Y118 is the kind of bull that can leave positive impact in the breed for years to come.

If you are looking for a bull that sires great phenotype, power and makes balanced cattle with the ability to flesh, breed back, stay sound and productive for the long haul... Look no further!

We can do amazing things together These are amazing times in the beef industry, and especially amazing in the Red Angus breed. We continue to see growth, acceptance and demand. I've heard Red Angus referred to as the “best-kept secret” in the beef industry. Well, guess what? The cat is out of the bag.

There are many challenges before us. These include living up to expectations and staying true to our core. As an association and as a breed, we are growing and developing. There are some growing pains. There are some challenges. The Red Angus breed has historically been an "underdog," working diligently to prove its worth; working hard to create and market value. That's what has brought us where we are. A mentality of coming together with a common focus, standing together with great cattle and great people in a community – registered and commercial; feeder and packer; producer and consumer.

Our Association's Core Values are read before each and every board meeting. They are central to all decisions. In addition, each and every board meeting begins with prayer – another core value that is at the base of every decision. We first must be vitally aware that the Red Angus Association of America IS a business. We must make decisions like a business. We must make decisions that won't necessarily please 100 percent of the people 100 percent of the time. We must put the good of the entire Association above personal interests at all times. It benefits all Red Angus stakeholders to see this as a business and run it as such. Furthermore, the business keeps growing. At a time when many breeds are shrinking, Red Angus is vibrant and growing ... and attracting more business. We're building that ever-important critical mass. Increasing numbers of cattle producers are seeing the great blend of convenience and performance that make Red Angus cattle so desirable.

8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

I've written before that we need to keep the knife sharp in order to keep the quality up. We must build, but rigorously cull. That's with the cattle, mind you. We must cull on the cattle side of our business and develop on the people side.

A business with strong core values, a strong product and a strong vision is set up well for success. The next component is the people to carry the values, product and vision. Business IS people. Okay, this business is people AND cattle. But still. Business is people. Connections. Respect. Caring. Service.

We are called by a Higher Power to love each other. We are called to serve each other. We are called to respond kindly to each other. Yep, that all got pretty mushy, didn't it?

You don't often equate business with a call to love one another. But look at any successful business and you'll see that serving people is the root of the success. And the root of serving people is genuine love and respect. We have great people: look at Red Angus and you'll see staff and stakeholders alike, with uncommon dedication, knowledge, work ethic and service to a dynamic breed of cattle and to each other. We can do amazing things when we come together.

We need each other. Red Angus IS the leader of great cattle and great people. We need to concentrate on that. Let's lift each other up. Let's see the best in each other. Let's build each other up. Let's live to serve each other and the cattle industry. Let's encompass quality in cattle and people. Let's come together to cultivate a valued, welcomed, GOOD environment in Red Angus. ’Cause that's good for business and for life. ■

Programs, People and Information As we celebrate the New Year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on yesterday and plan for tomorrow. Many factors related to the beef industry have changed this past year and have laid the groundwork for future endeavors. Programs Two decades ago, in order to capitalize on the opportunities of the times, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) developed the commercially focused Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). Looking back, the FCCP has become an industry leader to identify age, source and Red Angus genetics. The FCCP has enrolled over 1.8 million head of Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle and replacement heifers that excel in the feedlot and in the pasture.

In 2012, we added the Allied Access tag program to assist our customers who were utilizing planned crossbreeding in their operations. The Allied Access has guaranteed source and age verification to nearly 40,000 head of Red Angus customers’ cattle in just two years. The RAAA has built relationships with video auction companies, sale barns and red meat distributors. Less than a year ago, we implemented the Choice+ Grid with Tyson Fresh Meats to reward carcass merit and profitability of high-quality Red Angus cattle. We will continue to promote these programs, all the while, creating new programs to capture even more Red Angus value and provide the greatest return on investment for Red Angus genetics.

People Our commercially focused marketing team has laid solid groundwork connecting segments of the beef industry. The team’s No. 1 goal remains to develop relationships between commercial producers and their customers – the feeders – helping them all realize the value of Red Angus genetics all the way to a positive eating experience for our consumers. Looking forward, the Commercial Marketing Team is positioned to strengthen and grow these and new relationships up and down the

10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

beef production system. Their efforts will continue to focus on connecting cowherds to finishing programs, and finishing programs to the packing and food distribution companies. Information Armed with both new and proven RAAA tools, Red Angus members are preparing data and information for bull sale season. Their Red Angus customers will be able to make selection decisions guided by EPDs, ERTs and selection indices that are backed by the most complete database in the industry. The Red Angus database allows genetic merits to be reported for all phases of the production system including reproduction, maintenance, growth and carcass traits. This phenotype data, combined with 20 years of Total Herd Reporting and the sound science of genomic profiling, ensures Red Angus cattle are defined more accurately than cattle of any other breed.

HerdBuilder, the new Red Angus cowherd selection index, is developed specifically to aid commercial cattlemen in making decisions that will focus on their cowherd’s productivity and sustainability. Similarly for feeder cattle, we developed the GridMaster Index to make genetic progress toward raising feeder calves that will excel in the feed yard and on the rail. Members have been diligently collecting and reporting information to increase the power of the RAAA database. In the future, look for Red Angus members to continue to be innovative in technologies addressing genetic evaluation processes that are proven by science and driven by economics.

As you make your Red Angus bull selections this new year, buy with confidence knowing the programs, people and information of the RAAA are grounded in sound science geared towards creating profitable and sustainable cattle for commercial producers, feeders, packers and retailers.

I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year as we move forward together in 2015. ■

Marketing Update by Chelsea Poe, Marketing Programs Coordinator

Happy New Year! January marks the start of the fast and furious bull sale season and we are sure that members and commercial producers are either getting sale catalogs ready or anxiously awaiting their arrival in the mail.

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) offers a variety of tools for sale preparation that can be found at redangus.org/marketing/sale-planner. Sale Catalog Data Extracts Sale catalog data extracts are the first important factor in getting your sale catalog in order. RAAA can save you time and money with a sale catalog data extract – offered as a FREE service to RAAA members! By utilizing the data extract service, you are also ensuring your catalog information is accurate, complete and presented in a consistent format your customers are comfortable reading. Sale Catalog Inserts RAAA offers a variety of sale catalog inserts to add to your spring sale catalog. Available are guides to EPDs and indices, information on the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) as well as the new Choice+ Premium Red Angus Grid. Tag-Buying Program A new trend by RAAA seedstock producers is buying their bull customers a bag of tags for each registered Red Angus bull they purchase. If you’d like to start utilizing this type of customer service, an ad is available for your use. To learn more about how the tagbuying program works, contact Chelsea Poe at 940320-8316 or chelsea@redangus.org. Remember, only bulls 87.5% Red Angus or higher can qualify their progeny for the FCCP Yellow-Tag. Sale Terms and Conditions If you are new to the seedstock industry, you may be looking for basic information to start your sale catalog. RAAA provides suggested Sale Terms and Conditions for you to work from or include in your next sale catalog.

Gary Fike to Lead Red Angus Marketing Team by Laurin Spraberry, Media and Public Relations Coordinator The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) is pleased to announce its new Director of Commercial Marketing, Gary Fike. Fike’s primary responsibilities will be to plan and direct marketing programs with a focus on increasing demand for Red Angus genetics.

“Gary brings to the Association not only a vast amount of knowledge in the beef industry, but has experience in connecting producers, feedlots and packers to reach a high-quality endpoint,” said Twig Marston, Association CEO. “We’re excited about his ability to lead our marketing team and see the positive aspect he will have on Red Angus stakeholders.” Fike has 10 years of experience as a beef cattle specialist for Certified Angus Beef, LLC where he coordinated efforts with universities, feedlots and producers to drive the supply of Angus-sired cattle. He has also vast experience in extension work developing educational programs and conducting onfarm research pertaining to the cow-calf and feedlot industry.

"I am excited to begin working for the RAAA because I believe in the value of Red Angus cattle in today's beef industry climate,” said Fike. “They have so many great traits – maternal, calving ease, fertility, etc. – and superior carcass quality, which ultimately drives consumer demand for the cattle.” Fike received his bachelor of science degree in vocational agriculture education from Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Goodwell, Okla., then went on to earn his master’s degree in ruminant nutrition from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. He currently resides and will be based out of Westmoreland, Kan.

“This breed is very oriented to the commercial side of the beef industry and that will serve stakeholders well in the short-, mid- and long-term future,” said Fike. “I sincerely believe that Red Angus cattle are positioned for growth in these early stages of rebuilding the cowherd in the U.S. due to their widespread acceptance, and are adaptable to any area of the country." Fike began his duties at the RAAA Dec. 8, and can be reached by email at gary@redangus.org.

Total Herd Reporting

Total Herd Reporting (THR) has been the foundation of the Red Angus Association of America for 20 years, and still stands true to the original ideas while allowing for an everchanging industry. The objective of THR is to accumulate reproductive and performance data on all animals in the herd without controlling which animals will be registered. The purpose is to report either a calving record through weaning or a reason code as to why the female did not produce a natural calf. With the requirement to report on all animals versus a select few, this eliminates bias towards elite animals and actually allows for elite animals to excel and inferior animals to be evaluated closer. The design is to work for all stakeholders, not against. The information from THR is used to monitor overall reproductive performance, identify genetic, environmental and management areas in which to concentrate improvement efforts, assist in selection and culling decisions, and generate data for producing genetic predictions for reproductive traits. All members are required to participate in THR and report information listed on the calendar of events.

• Report breeding herd inventory • Assessments are based off herd inventory (females only) • Report production and performance data • Report heifer exposure data/inventory (not required, but highly recommended) All information should be reported through its respective worksheet or online submission form. Members are encouraged to submit data electronically. All herds are designated as spring or fall calving herds, which then determines when the above is due to the National Office. Spring calving season is January 1 to June 30, and fall calving season is July 1- December 31. The herd inventory should include all females the breeder will be collecting production data on for the next 12 months. Assessments The assessments associated with THR are on a per-cow basis versus per calf. The annual fee includes the reporting of each calf, whether registered or not and transfer is

at no additional charge provided the transfer application is received within 60 days of the date of sale. This encourages members to register and transfer all animals necessary.

Be aware time periods are allotted to do so, otherwise non-compliance will be subject to an additional fee. The assessments of THR may be paid in full at the time of billing or completed in five monthly installments or less to help stakeholders manage cash flow of their operation. Advantages The requirement of THR has made for increasing confidence of the breed’s Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). All EPDs benefit from collective data being reported, for example Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. These two EPDs along with the HerdBuilder Index make Red Angus exceptional in completely describing the essential cowherd traits.

The Gridmaster Index, allows for focus on carcass traits, but has a component that includes maternal EPDs, thus, the continued importance of THR. Placing selection pressure on these traits will have direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings and carcasses sold) can certainly increase your revenue on a per-calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cowherd-building traits – Calving Ease, Heifer Pregnancy, Maintenance Energy and Stayability.

With a fluctuating industry, EPDs are what make new marketing ideas possible, such as Genomic Merit DNA tests. It is also important to report as much data as possible. This includes calving ease, udder scores, body condition scores, cow weights, ultrasound and carcass data.

As producers in a growing world, we are continuously asking more of our cattle. The best way to improve our production is to measure further and evaluate closer. Therefore, THR gives Red Angus stakeholders the opportunity to exceed above the rest. A new year is a great time to review the Total Herd Reporting Annual Schedule. To help our members accomplish each requirement, we sent a THR calendar from the National Office in the mail. Members can also find it on the web site at redangus.org/registration.

www.southdakotaredangus.com 18 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

To meet Step 1 of THR after January 1, it will be time to update your spring herd inventory for 2015. The herd inventory is available online via Member Data-REDS. Also, report Fall 2014 calving data through weaning. ■

Top Genetics and Smart Management Equal Superior Beef by Teres Lambert for American Red Angus Magazine

20 American Red Angus Magazine â– January 2015

“We fell into a pot of gold when we entered the cattle business nine years ago,” said Michael Wasson, Prairie Dog Creek Cattle Co., of Dresden, Kan. “We bought a turnkey operation – the farm, the house, the facilities, everything including the cowherd – that was the result of Merlin Anderson’s life’s work.

The Wasson family: Michael holding Mitchell, Kelly with Macy, and Michaela

“The cows we purchased helped Merlin and his wife Bonnie earn the 1997 Beef Improvement Federation’s Commercial Producer of Year award. Merlin and Bonnie were light years ahead of most commercial cowmen when it comes to collecting performance data and putting it to use,” said Wasson.

“The challenge for us now is to honor Merlin and Bonnie by keeping the herd moving forward. That means not settling and making smart management decisions.” The Matriarchs of the Program The Anderson cowherd Wasson adopted was comprised primarily of halfblood Simmental-Red Angus and quarter Simmental, three-quarter Red Angus females. A fan of crossbred commercial cows, Wasson continued to employ the Anderson philosophy of using Red Angus bulls. Today, the herd is more heavily influenced with Red Angus. Prairie Dog Creek Cattle Co.’s cows are divided into spring and fall herds. The majority of the cows calve from February 1 to the end of March while the fall herd calves from September 1 to the end of October. Wasson will move a cow from the spring herd to the fall program if she is in the top 20 percent and comes up open, but females ranking below the magic 20 percent mark don’t get a second chance.

“We sell our poorer producers and those that don’t breed and fit into our 60-day calving window,” Wasson said. “We don’t sell a female because of her age. I’m big on keeping a female as long as she’s productive. I believe you don’t get an accurate picture of a cow and her producing ability until you’ve seen what she has done at six years of age.” This cowman is a fan of older, proven cows – the ones that calve, cycle, breed in the tight 60-day window and wean a scale-busting calf year after year.

He added that in 2012 the herd was reduced by 20 percent due to drought. While Wasson admitted that cutting that deep was painful at the time, he now sees the move as a good one as he culled cows that weren’t performing as well as others.

Wasson retains about 10 percent of the heifer calves as replacements. “Our replacement heifers are a mix of heifers out of the older proven cows plus heifers out of our younger females that were A.I.ed,” he explained. “The heifers out of the younger females are our freshest genetics – the best genetics available to us. The heifers out of the older cows have the proven genetics – what’s been working best in our herd.” While the commercial operation produces some outstanding heifers that many fellow commercial producers would want in their herd, Prairie Dog Creek Cattle Co. doesn’t market any replacement heifers. The premiums the ranch receives from feeding out the heifers at home in the feed yard and selling them as fat heifers on the grid typically surpasses the extra dollars they might have received as replacement heifers.

Our Program

Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.

Our Ranches

The Elite Nucleus herd runs on our "home" ranch located 10 miles south of Lewistown, Montana in the Snowy Mountains. We also have an advanced genetics center located in Iowa where our parents began farming over 50 years ago. In addition to these ranches we have established regional ranch centers in Mandan, North Dakota and Raton, New Mexico.

Our Genetics

We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Our herd sires Expectation and Packer are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes. Our next generation of herd sires such as Takeover, Nextpectation, Night Calver and Saga continue this tradition and headline the bulls that we will be selling in this event.

Our Bull and Heifer Development

We develop our bulls and females at the Weschenfelder Development Center just outside of Shepherd, MT. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed for large rugged environments.

Our Team

The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Our Key Members:

• Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the cowherd and development operations in Montana. • Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program. • Rodger Reitman – Our main reproductive specialist and development manager – numerous years experience with seed stock and commercial herds. • Kraig Sweeney - Our ranch manager that oversees the Elite Nucleus Herd in Lewistown. Well qualified with years of experience in seedstock and commercial cow calf production. • Weschenfelder Family – operate the Weschenfelder Development Facility and are responsible for the development of our bulls and replacement females. • Cooperators – Well known and historic cooperating families (Raisland, Tilleman, Bootjack and Knaub)

Our Customers

Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. Our customer's environments range from the High Desert to the High Plains and from the Midwest to the Rio Grande. Adaptability of our genetics has been the key to why our customers come back year after year.

$Profitability

Again this year, every bull will have a $Profit Index. This index ranks cattle on their ability to return “profit” to the beef industry. We believe that this index will simplify the selection process for our customers and move their operations in the right direction faster in this competitive market. Please contact us to visit about this ground breaking index as well as to receive materials that explain the process in more detail.

Yearling Bull Sale on March 21st! Join us for our

The cows are is predominantly Red Angus with a Simmental influence for hybrid vigor, performance, marbling and yield. Wasson doesn’t allow data to just accumulate in his office. He uses performance data – including carcass data on the offspring of each female and daily gain records – to determine where he needs to focus on improving his herd and which A.I. sires to use on which females.

Data analysis also has him rethinking his bull program. With a heavy influence of Red Angus in his cows, Wasson also uses hybrid bulls that are Red Angus crossed with a Continental breed. “I chose to crossbreed not only because Merlin was a fan of it but because crossbreeding gives you that hybrid vigor, more pounds at weaning and can improve fertility and cow longevity,” Wasson said. “I love my Red Angus cows and want to get the most out of them.”

Wasson is particular about where he shops for bulls. He and his wife have a handful of breeders that they are comfortable with and those breeders get their bull business. “I like to do business with a person I know,” Wasson stated. “I like to meet a seedstock producer face to face, and build a relationship with him or her. I also like to look at the type of cattle they raise and know their breeding philosophy.”

Seedstock Producers with a Commercial Focus! 24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

Prairie Dog Creek Cattle Co. has an intensive A.I. program. This past summer, he synchronized and A.I.ed all of the heifers one cycle, then A.I.ed 70 percent of his top-end cows one cycle as well. Next year, he plans to A.I. all of the cows. He turns out bulls for 30 days, using a single-bull-to-a-single-pasture program.

Top Genetics and Smart Management Equal Superior Beef

The Bull Investment Knowing the impact a bull has on a herd for generations to come, Wasson is particular about the bulls he purchases.

A couple of years ago, Wasson changed his program by purchasing two different kinds of bulls with different end targets. He selects one set of bulls for their maternal strength and uses them on his best cows with a goal of producing future replacement heifers. Wasson views these bulls as an investment in his heifers. He selects the other set of bulls or their growth and carcass traits with a goal of producing calves that will perform well in the feed yard and on the rail.

“I’ll wear out a bull sale catalog before ever attending a sale,” Wasson said. “I like to go through a sale catalog and look at pedigrees and performance data to determine what bulls meet our two different sets of criteria. My wife Kelly grew up a ranch girl and definitely knows a good bull when she sees it. I’m lucky to have her help when we are going through the pens at a bull sale.

“Kelly and I go through the sale offering and score each bull among our top picks on conformation – and that includes good feet. We’ll walk away from a bull if he’s flighty. We’re always seeking that even-tempered, structurally sound meat wagon that excels in the growth traits and in marbling.” Wasson is among the few buyers who will look at a bull with a heavier birth weight. He said his acceptance of a heavier birth weight – even 100 pounds – often lets him and Kelly buy a really good buy bull for less.

26 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

Wassons chooses to crossbreed for more pounds at weaning and improved longevity in his cowherd.

Top Genetics and Smart Management Equal Superior Beef

“We have some bigger, framier cows, and our cows can handle a bull with a birth weight that goes above what many other breeders don’t find as acceptable,” he explained. “I know a lot of cowmen who wouldn’t look twice at a bull with a 100-pound birth weight, but we can.” While Wasson said they can pay a bit more for a bull because they use him twice a year with a spring-breeding and a fall-breeding seasons, the couple has a set price point when it comes to buying bulls. The average price they expect to pay for a bull is the price of five head of fat cattle. Wasson said the question he asks himself after every bull purchase is, “Did we improve ourselves?”

“Buying a bull is like getting a Christmas package that you can’t open for two years or more,” he said. “While we’re excited when we buy the bull, we have to wait to see if he’s everything we thought he was. That means waiting until the carcasses of the offspring are hanging on the rail or waiting until his daughters are in production.” Good Beef The young, progressive cattleman’s emphasis on using A.I. sires and natural service bulls strong in growth and carcass traits is buying nice dividends. His steer calves typically wean off averaging 700 to 725 pounds while their heifer counterparts average 650 to 675 pounds.

Prairie Dog Creek Cattle Co. has also earned the coveted GridMaster Award for six consecutive years. The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) recognizes ranches and feeders that demonstrate their ability to combine superior genetics and precise marketing to produce a quality end product in a high-yielding package.

Wasson enrolls his calf crop in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) through RAAA, verifying the Red Angus genetics of his calves, as well as source and age with the USDA. The FCCP not only makes his calves eligible for the GridMaster Award, but more importantly, opens the door to marketing opportunities.

Armed with data and knowing their genetics, Wasson said it just made sense to retain ownership of their calves and use the Red Angus Choice+ Grid through Tyson Fresh Meats. “We did just what Merlin did,” he said. “Merlin is one of the best cattlemen around, and he raised the kind of calves that you wanted to retain ownership of.”

If the Choice+ Grid had been available when Merlin ran cattle, Wasson is certain Merlin would have sold his cattle on it.

“Earning a GridMaster Award tells us our program is on track,” Wasson said. “Our goal is to make money while providing today’s consumer with a satisfying eating experience. When you’re producing 85 percent or more Choice and Prime, 95 percent or more Yield Grade 2s and 3s and hitting a grid score of 100 or more, that’s some good beef.

Wassons retain the top 20 percent of their calves to sell privately to customers wanting high-quality beef.

“And we’re not even putting our top end in the program. The top 20 percent of our calves go to the local butcher.”

Word-of-mouth has helped Prairie Dog Creek Cattle Co. build a reputation as a source for high-quality beef and the ranch now sells directly to consumers. Customers from as far away as Denver and Texas order a quarter, half or full beef – and most drive to the Dresden, Kan., area to pick up it up after processing. “We ultrasound, identify the top 20 percent of the calves coming out of our on-farm feed yard and sell this beef directly to consumers,” Wasson states. “Each customer works directly with the butcher, specifying how they want their beef cut and packaged.”

30 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

“I like it when a customer tells us about their positive experience eating our beef,” Wasson smiled. ■

Herd Navigator Identifies Genetic Merit of Commercial Females by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

Pick up any agriculture publication and you are sure to find an article commenting on the strength of the cattle market. Indeed, commercial producers are experiencing great financial revenues, but, with the high prices we must also recognize that we are operating in quite possibly the most risky financial environment experienced in decades.

In particular, the supply of replacement-quality heifers is in short supply and the demand is excessive, which has provided the perfect environment for extreme prices being required to capture high-quality replacement commercial females. With such investments, producers must be confident of those females’ genetic ability to remain productive long-term and ultimately provide a positive return. Recognizing this need, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) has developed the Herd Navigator genetic profile. Powered by the ultimate combination of the Red Angus database and a Gene-

Seek reduced-panel DNA test, the Herd Navigator provides vital genetic information on tested Red Angus-influenced commercial females. Tested females receive genetic information in the form of individual percentile rank as compared to the herd, and individual percentile rank as compared to all Red Angus animals. Traits included in the Herd Navigator are Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster Indices, all EPD traits and parent verification, given the potential sires have been tested with the RA50K test (50K or HD-80K). The culmination of information delivered through the

Herd Navigator Test

To order the Herd Navigator test, producers must complete and submit the DNA order form found at redangus.org/genetics/dna-tools or call the National Office at (940) 387-3502. Blood cards will be provided free of charge. Producers ordering Herd Navigator tests must own at least one registered Red Angus bull, and the bull(s) must be transferred to the ordering producer. Take advantage of the special introductory price of $25 per female by ordering your Herd Navigator tests today.

Herd Navigator provides commercial producers with an unmatched tool for guiding their selection decisions.

Due to the fact that DNA tests are breed specific – meaning the test works best on the breed it was developed for – the Herd Navigator should only be used on females that are at least 75% Red Angus breed composition. For example, the Herd Navigator test will accurately predict the genetic potential of females that were sired by a registered Red Angus bull and have a registered Red Angus maternal grandsire.

Producers will receive an Excel report with in-herd and across-breed percentile rankings of their females, helping them identify which are better suited as replacements.

38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

Producers who elect to use the Herd Navigator in a move to expedite genetic progress should test females prior to breeding, as once the females are bred the options to market the genetically inferior females are limited.

Herd Navigator Identifies Genetic Merit of Commercial Females Producers wanting to capture all of the superior genetics in the calf crop should use the Herd Navigator at weaning. Alternatively, the Herd Navigator can be used prior to the final prebreeding cull, which the only advantage of this choice is reducing the total costs of the Herd Navigator test.

Regardless of when the Herd Navigator is used, the information provided on tested females can greatly assist producers in reaching the goals of their operation. Recall that in addition to genetic predictions for cowherd-building traits, the Herd Navigator provides genetic predictions for GridMaster, carcass traits and growth. Therefore, producers are provided valuable data on females culled from the replacement group, i.e. if the culled females have favorable carcass traits the producer may elect to re-

tain ownership of the heifers in the feed yard. Not only does the Herd Navigator provide Red Angus stakeholders with a valuable breed improvement tool, but as well, the Herd Navigator can be used as a value-adding marketing tool.

Producers who market replacementquality heifers as a major component of their operation can use the Herd Navi-

gator to provide a genetic assessment of the marketed females to potential buyers. Imagine the additional premiums that could be rewarded to a group of replacement heifers that have an average HerdBuilder Index ranking in the top 25 percent. Red Angus recognizes the increasing expectations of commercial producers, and stands ready to provide cuttingedge tools to better enable the success of all producers who use Red Angus genetics.

The information provided though application of the Herd Navigator delivers valuable guidance to the most demanding profit-minded producers. Get the most out of your Red Angus genetic investments by identifying the most profit-enhancing replacement females by ordering your Herd Navigator profile today. ■

The Death of a Dynasty by Jennifer Deroin, The Nichols Accounting Group P.C.

In previous articles we’ve written for the ARA Magazine, we’ve talked a lot about planning. We discuss the importance of a budget, a strategic plan, an operational plan and more. CPAs, wealth advisors and attorneys will talk to you about estate plans, wills, trusts and other complex strategies to address the technicalities of transferring generational wealth – and that’s good. They should. With all of that planning and complex strategy though, why is it that family wealth rarely survives beyond the third generation?

As with most issues in life, it has to deal with something more complex than asset protection trusts or charitable lead annuity trusts. It has to deal with people. By nature, we’re complex beings and we bring emotion, opinions, relationship bias and independent thought to the table. We have insecurities, beliefs and values, but we don’t always share them openly. Lack of communication, and lack of family planning to transfer generational wealth and responsibility before a patriarch passes, is the dagger to the family wealth’s heart. A trust document does not a good manager make, i.e., you can’t train your children from a paper document. Let’s take a look at two examples. The Vanderbilts Easily recognized as one of America’s wealthiest families, their dynasty fell to ruin in four generations. In the words of William K. Vanderbuilt, “Inherited wealth is a real handicap to happiness. It is as certain a death to ambition as cocaine is to morality.” They amassed the first great fortune in the Industrial Age, and went on to embody the excess of the Guilded Age. They accumulated extravagant assets and at the time of

the patriarch’s death, their wealth was more than that held in the U.S. Treasury. From this wealth, the family spent and spent, and in 1973 at a Vanderbilt family reunion held at Vanderbilt University, 120 members attended and there was not one millionaire in the group. The Rothschilds Mayer Amschel Rothschild, born in 1744, developed a finance house and spread his empire by installing each of his five sons in the five main European financial centers to conduct business. The Rothschild coat of arms contains a clenched fist with five arrows symbolizing the five dynasties established by the five sons of Mayer Rothschild.

The Rothschild family banking businesses pioneered international high finance during the industrialization of Europe. They were instrumental in supporting railway systems across the world and in complex government project financing. Today the amount of their net worth is speculated to be in excess of $350 billion.

So why have the Rothschilds’ wealth survived and the Vanderbilts’ did not? It’s simple. The Rothschilds have a written and practiced plan to prepare generations for the responsibilities they will someday undertake. Beyond that, they have a clearly defined set of values and a written vision and mission statement.

When a Rothschild child needs or wants money, they take a loan from the family business. They are mentored, trained and prepared for the responsibilities of money, business and wealth. They hold an annual family meeting where the mission and values are discussed. Strategic plans are revealed and all family members must participate if they expect to benefit from the family fortune … each and every year.

They are groomed for this position and understand the expectations.

How does this relate to me? Whether you’re managing $350 billion dollars in an international bank, or $10 million dollars on the family ranch, if you’re inexperienced or don’t understand expectations, you will likely stumble and make mistakes. With enough generations stumbling and making mistakes, a fortune – even as large as the Vanderbilts’ – can dissipate.

A family legacy starts with a vision and a desire. A clear understanding of where you’ve been, how you got there, and where you intend to go is the critical first step. If Dad and Mom don’t communicate these wishes to their children and groom them for the impending responsibility, good intentions won’t be the glue that keeps it together. Knowing your vision and having the desire to work towards it are only step one. From there, the real work begins. People often confuse succession planning and estate planning as one. They confuse the technical legal and tax strategies of asset distribution with the proponent for successful generational wealth transference. They perhaps ignore true business management planning and mentoring because they’re following “what we’ve always done,” and “what we’ve always done” may or may not be appropriate for today’s requirement – and may or may not be communicated appropriately. Families bring a completely different dynamic to business – one that refuses to be ignored. If you have a vision for what you’ve built, your dynasty, it’s important that you work towards building expected outcomes. It doesn’t just happen by luck and happenstance. Often, an outsider can help you develop a plan – someone that can see the issues and be an unbiased advisor through the process. Typically the emotions of the family, within the family business, require a third party to help sort through the irrational that emotion inevitably brings. The good news is that it’s never too late to start. ■

Stem-Cell Research Unlocks the A.I. Barrier by Sheyna Strommen for American Red Angus Magazine

Through artificial insemination, cattle producers throughout the world have been able to improve the quality and quantity of their herds by breeding cows to bulls with high genetic or phenotypic merit. The limiting factor is: once a bull has stopped producing semen, the supply is exhaustible. “That can be problematic for breeders who only learn about a bull’s ability to produce exceptional traits – like high-quality, productive females – years after that bull is gone or has stopped producing semen,” explained Dr. Kyle Caires, assistant professor and animal scientist at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia.

Dr. Kyle Caires

“We started having success in bulls only after we stepped away from what worked in rodents; we started from scratch. Bovine SSCs have been frozen in our lab and we feel this provides an opportunity for long-term genetic preservation.”

What if a bull’s semen supply was everlasting even after his death? This is a question that has intrigued Caires ever since he was a young boy growing up on his family’s cattle ranch on the Hawaiian island of Maui. It led him to Oregon State University where he earned a bachelor’s of science degree in animal science and eventually to Washington State where

72 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

he earned his Ph.D. in reproductive genomics.

Caires believes the possibility could revolutionize the cattle industry. And, thanks to research he and others are conducting at Berry College, the reality is closer than one may realize.

The answer lies in stem cell research – not the sometimes-controversial embryonic stem cells, but the adult stem cell population located in a male’s reproductive system that continually produce sperm throughout his life. Stem Cell basics Stem cells, according to the Mayo Clinic, are the body’s “raw materials,” from which all other cells with

Spermatogonial stem cells either function to make new stem cells or enter a process known as ‘differentiation’ that leads to the production of sperm.

Stem-Cell Research Unlocks the A.I. Barrier

specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or in a laboratory setting stem cells can divide to form daughter cells with a more specific function, such as blood, brain or muscle cells.

In the case of Caires’ research, spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) deep within a male’s testis either function to (1) make new stem cells (self-renewal) or (2) enter a process known as ‘differentiation’ that leads to the production of sperm. The presence of SSCs underlies a major difference in reproductive physiology between males and females. “Females are born with a defined number of eggs,” explained Caires. Prior to birth, the stem cells within a female’s ovary have differentiated themselves into oocytes. Thus, she has a set number of eggs throughout

A healthy bull produces about 70,000 sperm per second but once a bull has stopped producing semen, the supply is exhaustible. Caires and his team are finding methods to preserve a bull’s potency through stem-cell transplantation.

her lifetime. “Very few ovulate, while most are lost during each 21-day estrous cycle,” said Caires, reiterating, “Very few ovulate.” By comparison, SSCs in males, while present at birth are maintained

throughout adulthood. Caires explained that once puberty is attained, a male can maintain spermatogenesis (sperm production) for the better part of his life because of a balance between SSC self-renewal and differentiation.

Stem-Cell Research Unlocks the A.I. Barrier The offspring of a single SSC can yield 1,096 spermatozoa, whereas in females, one primary oocyte will differentiate into one egg. “The cycle is constantly occurring and extremely prolific as a mature, healthy bull produces about 70,000 sperm per second,” he said. A male’s testicles serve as the factory where this process takes place. Conventional wisdom tells us that the bigger the factory (scrotal circumference), the more sperm are produced and as a correlate, his daughters will be early maturing. But conventional wisdom may be a little misleading, Caires said. Some bulls with smaller scrotal circumferences may actually have longer testicles and more functional testis tissue, so the overall volume of the testicles should be considered.

Another misleading factor connected to scrotal circumference is subcutaneous fat. “During really good growing seasons, or with unlimited access to creep feed, fat can be deposited in the scrotum. This could potentially lead to poor estimates of reproductive merit and as a result of that fat infiltration, create a semi-heat stress condition that diminishes a bull’s fertility.” This is supported by the fact that bulls developed on high-energy rations have reduced fertility. “It takes 60-62 days for an spermatogonia to undergo all of the changes needed before spermatozoa are produced. Any impingement – heat stress or disease – could damage this sensitive process and put a bull outof-pocket for several months.” Unlocking the mysteries of SSCs may one day give ranchers better tools to

76 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

not only predict bull fertility, but it may also lead to methods that produce an inexhaustible supply of semen.

Like Embryo Transfer, But for Sperm Production For decades cattle producers have been able to freeze and later utilize semen and embryos with relatively good success. But again, once their supply is exhausted, it is gone.

A better understanding of the factors that promote SSC survival and development may allow producers to harvest these unique cells and transplant them into a new factory, thereby eliminating the supply conundrum. Though it sounds like science fiction, researchers are coming closer to that reality each day.

Stem-Cell Research Unlocks the A.I. Barrier Caires says the technique is successful in rodents, but cattle are more challenging as different hormones and factors regulate SSC development, not to mention the tremendous genetic variation between bulls. Mice strains often have inbreeding coefficients greater than 90 percent. “We started having success in bulls only after we stepped away from what worked in rodents; we started from scratch. Bovine SSCs have been frozen in our lab and we feel this provides an opportunity for long-term genetic preservation,” Caires said.

In cattle, the process begins with sterilizing a young, healthy recipient bull – eliminating his SSCs. Then, a testicular biopsy is harvested from a donor bull. Researchers isolate and culture the donor’s SSCs in a laboratory to increase the number that will be transplanted into the recipient.

Caires harvests a testicular biopsy from a donor bull.

After SSC transplantation, the stem cells kick-start the recipient’s reproductive factory and within several weeks, the recipient bull is producing sperm genetically identical to the donor. The donor bull may be young (pre-puberty), mature or recently deceased. Caires and his team have, successfully isolated and worked with SSCs from bulls ranging from one day old to five years of age.

78 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

Practical Applications Caires envisions several practical applications of the science. “Without question, a better understanding of SSCs will provide insight towards boosting sperm production in bulls for the A.I. industry, and we have data to support that notion,” he said. Caires has identified several genes im-

Stem-Cell Research Unlocks the A.I. Barrier portant for regulating SSC function in bulls and he hopes this work will lead to new strategies to directly select for improved fertility traits, instead of factors that are merely associated with fertility, like scrotal circumference.

SSC transplantation can facilitate an endless semen supply, and accelerate sperm production in young bulls or after a debilitating event. The process can also extend the reach of bulls into areas where heat stress, terrain or insects have made it difficult for them to perform. If the process can work between breeds, ranchers could produce Red Angus-cross calves out of Brahman cows that were serviced by a Brahman recipient bull. SSCs are the only adult stem cell population that transmits genetics to offspring, so they may also be a realistic means for genetic manipulation. Re-

A potential practical application of Dr. Caires’ research could extend the reach of bulls into areas where heat stress, terrain or insects create breeding conundrums. searchers could insert genes of interest into SSCs, transplant them, and produce sperm with the potential to create genetically modified livestock for agricultural and human biomedical applications.

80 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

“Realistically, those applications are several years away. The process needs more refinement before it will be a viable industry tool, but at this point, we have achieved 60 percent success with the technique in cattle,” Caires concluded. ■

Total Herd Reporting... Truly Building Better Beef by Tracey Koester

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) was the forerunning breed association to create and implement Total Herd Reporting (THR). This new concept revolutionized the fee structure for Red Angus registrations, but more importantly, focused the industry on the relationship between complete data and the value of subsequent genetic predictions. Today, THR has become a pillar of the Red Angus breed and has set the bar for other breed associations to report ALL progeny records into their databases – not just the calves that breeders think are good enough to register.

Red Angus continues to be the only breed association where THR is not an option for its members. They are required to participate and report records on their whole herd. This commitment alone speaks of the dedication and performance mindset of Red Angus founders, leaders and members as they strive to produce the best and most-accurate genetics for commercial cow-calf producers. The integrity of the Red Angus breed is built on the honesty of the breeders and the reliability of the cattle they raise. Red Angus leadership set the bar high when they implemented THR.

The first core policy of the RAAA, as written by the late breed founder Waldo Forbes, states, “The goal of the Association is to place its faith in objective tests and in-herd comparisons of factors of economic importance and known heritability. By making this policy an integral part of the registration system, Red Angus breeders

88 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

can achieve faster progress toward the ultimate goal of more efficient beef production.”

A Concept is Born Discussion at the first Brain Trust meeting in 1993 in Denver, Colo., stimulated the need for a strategic plan for the RAAA. One of the areas the Strategic Planning Committee addressed was the inaccuracy of beef industry EPDs. “The only reason we could identify for the dramatic shifts in our EPD calculations was biased progeny reporting,” said Melvin Leland of Sidney, Mont., who served as RAAA president from ’92 to ’94. “Breeders weren’t reporting all of their progeny and, consequently, EPDs weren’t reflecting all of the data.”

At that time, the Red Angus membership was only reporting 46 percent of its calf crop based on the traditional method of paying on a per-calf basis to register stock.

Total Herd Reporting

“Breeders were being penalized with a fee to do the right thing of registering and transferring animals, continued Leland.

RAAA leaders worked for two years to convince the membership that THR was essential to the success of the Red Angus breed, but it was a hard sell. “No one likes ‘mandatory’ things, said Leland. Jim Leachman of Billings, Mont., brainstormed the final solution to assess a fee to keep cows active on a breeder’s inventory with no additional costs to report their offspring or transfer ownership. The new registration concept was appealing to the membership and, at the 1994 Red Angus convention, THR passed unanimously. Benefits The most important benefit of THR is a more accurate database of Red Angus genetics built from the records that pro-

With complete contemporary group reporting, we are provided with comparisons between all animals which results in reliable EPDs.

ducers submit on their cowherds. That equates directly to more accurate EPDs – the original goal of the conceptual founders of THR. “With complete contemporary group reporting, we are provided with comparisons between all animals which results in reliable EPDs, explained Larry Keenan, RAAA director of breed improvement. “It’s common sense – since EPDs rely on measured variation within a contemporary group – that THR pro-

duces more reliable EPDs and faster gains in EPD accuracy by ensuring the variation in performance of each calf is counted.

How does this affect the commercial producer who is studying EPDs at a bull sale? Keenan sited another core policy that states the RAAA will strive to have the best objectively described cattle in the industry and to provide the best service to RAAA members’ customers – commercial producers.

Our cow herds have been developed to thrive in every possible condition from extended drought to severe winters. We don’t breed for extremes ... except convenience!

from this unique breed registry structure of paying an annual fee to keep a cow on active status.

“Our responsibility is to provide commercial producers with the best prediction of an animal’s true genetic merit,” said Keenan. “So when a producer purchases a bull whose EPDs indicate he will be a calving-ease sire, the bull performs as expected.”

Advancements in genomic technology have allowed Red Angus to develop DNA tests for genetic merit with the results being incorporated into EPD calculations as additional data points. Based on the fact that such DNA tests are based on collected phenotypes, Red Angus benefits by having robust DNA tests based on the solid foundation of THR data. “Trustworthy DNA tests are dependent upon reliable EPDs,” said Keenan, who pointed out that Red Angus stakehold-

ers have a tremendous advantage in making genetic progress due to the powerful combination of THR data and DNA tests, which produces EPDs with unsurpassed reliability. Challenges Even though the RAAA has practiced Total Herd Reporting for over a decade, some breeders still struggle with the concept that they can benefit

by Katie Teague, Member Services Specialist

“With THR it’s important that our members realize the benefits of reporting on the complete cow inventory as opposed to a selection-based fee structure,” said Kenda Ponder, RAAA director of member services. “The breeder reports a cow’s production whether it’s a live calf, a stillborn calf or one that dies before weaning age, as well as a reason code if the cow doesn’t have a calf. That is all valuable information we incorporate into EPDs.” “If a breeder’s ultimate goal is to provide reliable genetics to commercial producers, they should manage their cowherd like it is a commercial cowherd,” said Keenan.

As we enter the 2015 show season, it is important to remember to make sure your show animals are eligible and all of the information is correct at the National Office. Here are a few things to remember to make sure you are ready to show:

• Remember to check the show’s ownership and entry deadlines and official show rules. • Make sure the animal is registered or transferred to the correct owner before the deadline date. • If the animal needs registering, please allow appropriate time for the work to be completed. Work is completed in the order it is received. • Always allow extra time for DNA issues that may arise. • If you are registering a calf prior to weaning, make sure you register the calf as an “Incomplete” to avoid a “Category II” designation. • Remember to check the animal’s registration status and update data regularly as registration statuses and other information may change. Certificate issue dates cannot be changed.

For more information and a complete list of the RAAA’s Show Rules and Eligibility Guidelines can be found in the Breeder’s Guide at redangus.org/registration/breeders-guide. Please contact Katie Teague at the National Office if you have questions.

Total Herd Reporting

“Therefore, if a cow’s producing ability results in her being inactive, she should be culled from the herd. A producer may think they beat the THR financial system, but they can’t beat the genetic evaluation system, which will reveal a cows inability to remain productive.”

“THR works to your advantage,” said Ponder, who has directed the program since 1998. “Don’t try to beat the system – instead, let it work for you.” The Next Level of THR As with any successful program, growth and change are inevitable, and with the genetic advancements the past few years, it is time to raise the bar for THR as well.

Currently, breeders are only required to submit birth and weaning dates and weaning weights, but they are encouraged to submit additional data that is used to formulate important EPDs. An

example is the data collected when an animal reaches a year of age – yearling weights, scrotal measurements and carcass ultrasound data.

The RAAA encourages producers to weigh their cows at weaning time and evaluate their body condition scores. This information is incorporated into the formula for the Maintenance Energy (ME) EPD.

The Heifer Exposure Report provides valuable data toward the calculation of the Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD. Members submit this simple report at the end of their breeding season to identify which heifers were exposed and should be entering the producer’s herd in the coming year. The HPG and Stayability (Stay) EPDs rely heavily on yearly data in order to accurately predict these traits, said Keenan. Once RAAA had a decade’s

94 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

worth of THR-based data, the Stayability EPD was upgraded from the old calculation that treated all data as non-THR data.

“Through our Stayability EPD upgrade, we were able to evaluate the impact THR data provides in predicting an animal’s genetic merit for that trait,” said Keenan. “In comparing the two Stayability models (evaluated as THR data vs. non-THR data) we found significant differences – high-accuracy sires had a rank correlation of 0.55. Forty-five out of 100 sires changed rank when evaluated with the upgraded THR model.

Total Herd Reporting

the FCCP. “Our largest competitor isn’t another breed – it’s non-registered and non-transferred bulls,” said Ponder.

We are now able to provide commercial producers with a reliable tool in selecting for Stayability.”

The RAAA also mails a complimentary one-year subscription to the American Red Angus magazine to producers who have had an animal transferred to them. This expanded mailing increases readership to Red Angus customers – those producers using Red Angus genetics.

Additional Benefits of THR There are additional benefits included in the RAAA registry that add value to Red Angus cattle for commercial producers.

Ponder emphasized that RAAA does not charge members to transfer animals within 60 days of the sale in order to encourage breeders to transfer those animals into the new owner’s name. “It is imperative that bulls are transferred to their new owners,” she said. When members sell and transfer ownership of their bulls, those commercial producers become eligible to enroll their calves in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) and tag them with the Red Angus “Yellow Tag.” Enrollment in FCCP certifies that the

calf wearing the yellow tag is genetic, age and source verified with the USDA. It opens up marketing opportunities and increases profitability for that producer – both for feeder calves entering a feedlot and for heifers sold as replacement females. If Red Angus bulls are not transferred, the RAAA cannot verify those commercial producers own the bulls and therefore they cannot enroll their calves into

“THR is about far more than reporting birth and weaning weights,” said Ponder. “The integrity of the Red Angus breed is built on the honesty of the breeders and the reliability of the cattle they raise. Red Angus leadership set the bar high when they implemented THR. Today’s breeders are challenged to continue that tradition, ensuring they are producing the best possible genetics and that our stakeholders have confidence in Red Angus cattle all the way down the chain.”

Total Herd Reporting

The Nuts and Bolts of THR

“Total Herd Reporting may appear to be a complex and cumbersome reporting process,” said Ponder, “but in the overall scheme, it is as easy as 1–2–3.” She broke down the process into three simple steps. For a complete THR calendar, visit redangus.org. 1) Members report active cowherd inventory (Spring Herds – Jan. 31; Fall Herds – June 1).

Most producers report their active cows between weaning and pregnancy check time and calving season. During this timeframe, producers can accurately determine which animals will remain in their herd for the coming year. For increased accuracy on HPG EPDs, breeders should also submit a Heifer Exposure Report on yearling females entering their inventory.

The RAAA considers a female to be active at the beginning of her respective calving season. At the assessment age of 16 months (determined Jan. 1 for spring-born heifers or July 1 for fallborn heifers), a female will be listed on a member’s cowherd inventory assuming that heifer will calve as a 2-year-old. “This age assumption,” said Ponder, “covers the management practices for the majority of the membership.” THR employs a two-inventory structure meaning active cows will calve either in the spring or fall. In order to allow for those cows who calve during the winter or summer months without adding additional inventories, the RAAA initiated a 45-day calving window to avoid cows changing inventory seasons every year. Therefore, a spring-inventory female may calve as early as Nov. 15 and as late as Aug. 15 without changing calv-

ing seasons. Subsequently, a fall-inventory female may calve as early as May 15 or as late as Feb. 15 for the same reasons. 2) RAAA bills members for THR assessment fees based on cowherd inventory (Spring Herds – July 1; Fall Herds – Dec. 1).

Red Angus members pay an annual assessment fee per cow to keep each breeding-age female active. There are no fees to register calves or transfer animals within 60 days of the sale, nor are bulls assessed a THR fee. The RAAA bills its members’ THR fees in five monthly installments to make it easier financially for members. This also helps the RAAA spread out its revenue throughout the year. 3) Members report calf crop (Spring Herds – Aug. 1; Fall Herds – March 1).

Members submit birth and weaning performance data to the RAAA at weaning time in order to report their calf crop. If a calf is reported, but not registered – which is an option through THR – the cow is given credit for having a calf. However, with incomplete reporting it is impossible to distinguish between cows that did not conceive and cows that did not produce a registered calf, hence damaging her own production and fertility EPDs. Due to the RAAA’s focus on performance, each calf must have both a birth and weaning date as well as a weaning weight. The RAAA incorporates this data into its registration database and assigns each calf a registration number. Even if a cow loses her calf before weaning, the member must report that information in order to keep the cow active. If producers however, fail to complete the above steps according to the THR

98 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

calendar, they will need to report data through the following reports to avoid incomplete reporting. Member submits “No Progeny” Report (Spring Herds – March 15; Fall Herds – Sept. 15 The No Progeny Report is a reminder to breeders that the RAAA did not receive one of the requirements for THR within the previous 12-month period for females that appeared on the initial inventory.

If a cow doesn’t wean a calf, the breeder can submit a reason code and avoid inactivating her. For example, if the calf died before weaning, or the cow was incorporated into a donor program, she will not be penalized or inactivated for not having a calf. Another viable reason is if she was moved to a different calving season such as a spring calver moving into a fall program. RAAA issues “Inactivation” Report (Spring Herds – End of May; Fall Herds – End of Oct.) If a breeder removes a cow from inventory or fails to submit a “No Progeny” report, she becomes inactive. However, if the breeder decides to re-activate her at a later date, the RAAA will charge a reactivation fee per cow.

“It’s important for producers to report comprehensive data on their active cowherd,” said Ponder. “The RAAA relies on breeders’ reports for accurate and complete EPDs. We need that data.” ■

Member News Kansans explore cattle marketing opportunities in South America After traveling for hours by air to reach Argentina and Uruguay, a group of Kansas cattlemen found the scenery out their window to look strikingly similar to home. The land, mostly flat with scattered rolling hills, was dotted with cattle as far as the eye could see. Billy Brown, agribusiness development coordinator for the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) led Craig Beran of B&D Herefords, Megan Fink of Fink Beef Genetics and Daniel Mushrush of Mushrush Red Angus to explore Argentina and Uruguay in an effort to research and develop new markets for Kansas beef genetics. “The ability to lean on these prominent Kansas cattlemen for their expertise in the cattle industry was especially helpful in identifying specific opportunities for future exports,” Brown said. “Their expertise assisted us in crafting a robust strategy for future efforts in the region.”

Kansas exports $5.35 billion dollars annually of cattle, meat, grains and other farm products around the globe. Identifying Argentina and Uruguay as two countries with the opportunities to expand beef exports and enhance marketing for U.S. beef genetics, KDA was able to secure funding for the assessment trip by submitting a proposal to the United States Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. The trade mission’s first stop on the explorative trip was the secondlargest country in South America, Argentina. Following Argentina, the group continued to Uruguay. The team visited each country’s breed association headquarters, five ranches and two bull sales.

Argentine gauchos welcomed Daniel Mushrush (left) to learn about their agriculture and management practices, and how Red Angus fit into their operation.

Almost 90 percent of the cattle raised in Argentina are Angus. Unlike in the U.S. where the Black and Red Angus associations are separate, Argentina’s Angus breed is comprised of both black and red cattle. Opening and expanding opportunities to export with Argentina would be easy for Kansas cattle ranchers since the Angus breed is very familiar in both countries. Hereford cattle are the second most popular breed in Argentina, another breed with a strong presence in Kansas.

While in Argentina, the team visited Angus and Hereford ranches to assess how Kansas genetics could be an asset around the globe. The group had the privilege to see calves sired by a Mushrush Red Angus bull. The semen had been exported to Argentina via CRI International. “It was a validating and humbling experience to see cattle in another country from one of my family’s bull,” Mushrush said. “It was the highlight of my trip.” Mushrush estimated there were more calves on the ground sired by his bulls there than at his own ranch. “Those calves represented all the hard work my family has put into our bulls and genetics,” he said. Uruguay is home to approximately 3 million people and an astonishing 12

106 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

million head of cattle. An estimated 50 percent of these cattle are Herefords, 25 percent are Angus and the remaining 25 percent consists of other beef and dairy breeds. The cattle industry in Uruguay is very progressive and open to the use of U.S. genetics. Cattle in both Argentina and Uruguay are smaller in stature than that of the average American breed. Argentinean and Uruguayan producers appreciate a more condensed build which more ideally fits their management style and environment. Within the borders of these two countries lies tremendous potential for Kansas beef producers. “If it isn’t us, it’s going to be somebody else,” Mushrush said. Exporting semen and embryos provides another outlet for the Kansas beef industry to expand. “Both countries present significant opportunities for Kansas and U.S. seedstock producers to export genetics in both the Angus and Hereford breeds,” Brown said. “As Kansas agriculturalists, it is our duty to seize advancement opportunities such as these. With our genetics in countries such as Argentina and Uruguay, the door to future opportunities is just beginning to open.”

Olson honored by North Star Classic livestock show by Dale Hildebrant for Farm & Ranch Guide C. Edward Olson of Argusville, N.D., was honored at this year's North Star Classic livestock show in Valley City, N.D. on Dec. 5. Olson was born and raised on his family's farm west of Argusville. OHR (Olson Hereford Ranch) has been a family-owned and operated business since 1914, first as a grain operation and then expanding into a purebred cattle operation in 1936, first with Hereford, then adding Polled Hereford in 1967, and Red Angus in 1991.

Olson has been a member of the North Dakota Winter Show Livestock Committee serving as a rep for Herefords, Polled Herefords and Red

Angus breeds numerous times and in various capacities. He is currently an active member in the National Polled Hereford Association and the Red Angus Association of America. He has served as a director for Cass County Farm Bureau and is a current member of the NDSU Livestock Endowment Board.

Montana youth earn buckles

Olson is semi-retired and currently farms 2,800 acres and tends to 150 cattle with his son, Carl. He and his wife Jeanne reside in Fargo. In addition to Carl, Edward and his wife have two other children, Craig and Caryn.

This highly successful program has grown remarkably over the past few years, setting a record in 2014 by awarding 44 buckles.

OHR was the first operation to host its private production sale at the Winter Show building. The Red Power Sale was hosted there for five years, starting in 2002, and has since been held at the family farm. The Olsons have continuously operated as Olson Hereford Ranch with their Red Angus division known as OHR Red Angus.

The Montana Red Angus Association (MTRAA) awarded 44 buckles to Montana 4-H and FFA youth during the affiliate’s show and sale activities at the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) in Billings, Mont., in October (photo below).

The youth earned a buckle for exhibiting a Red Angus or Red Angusinfluenced animal and winning either Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion at their county fair in breeding, market or carcass divisions. The MTRAA requires that the exhibited animal is a registered Red Angus or has at least one parent that is a registered Red Angus.

In Memory

Helen Pederson Funeral services for Helen Pederson, 96, of Timber Lake, S.D., were held Nov. 28, 2014, at United Parish Church in Timber Lake. Mrs. Pederson passed away on Nov. 23, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Selby, S.D. Helen May Pederson was born on March 29, 1918, in Chatsworth, Ill., to Elmer and Nancy Brammer. Like many families in the 1920s, the Brammers migrated west, settling near Dupree, S.D., where Helen attended grade school and high school. She graduated as valedictorian of her class and then went on to attend Northern Normal in Aberdeen, S.D. After receiving her teacher’s certificate, Helen returned to Ziebach County where she taught in country schools. In 1941, she taught grades 1 through 4 at Firesteel, S.D., and met the love of her life, Ralph Pederson. In 1942 she became the Ziebach County School Superintendent.

On Oct. 6, 1943, Helen and Ralph were married. Together Ralph and Helen raised their sons Gary and Ron on the Broken Heart Ranch north of Firesteel. Ralph and Helen recently celebrated 71 years of marriage together. Helen enjoyed and was very active in ranching activities. She resided at her beloved Broken Heart Ranch until April of 2012 when she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Selby.

Being an active ranch wife, Helen was always willing to ride her favorite horse and assist during the roundup. When working cattle, she always insisted on bringing the cows or calves down the alley, even at the age of 80. It scared the family, but they said they couldn’t keep her out of the alley.

Another of Helen’s favorite activities was driving the truck during silage harvest. It wouldn’t matter if the field

118 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2015

was a half mile or three miles, she would be there waiting for the next load. It was her innovative idea to start using Red Angus genetics and thus was the start of Broken Heart Ranch Red Angus. Ralph and Helen were honored with the Pioneer Breeder Award by the Red Angus Association of America in 1999.

Helen’s true passion was raising and racing horses. Her home is filled with racing awards reflecting 50-plus years of successfully doing what she loved. In her spare time she was an avid stamp and coin collector.

When Helen wasn’t working on the ranch, she was a faithful member of the Prairie Parish Church and active in the Sew Willing Extension Club, Ladies Aid and Saddle Club. One of her favorite organizations was the Timber Lake & Area Historical Society & Museum. As president, Helen led the effort of nominating The Chapel of the Holy Spirit, often called the Old Stone Church, to the National Register of Historic Places. She was instrumental in getting new windows, a roof and point tucking done on the church. Helen is survived by her husband, Ralph Pederson; sons, Gary (Sue) of Firesteel, and Ron of Rapid City; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren – Bart (Carol), Logan, Blake, Jessica and Kylie Pederson of Knoxville, Tenn.; Bret (Cindy), Graylin, Jayden, Code, Jessup and Jessa Pederson of Glad Valley; Kimberly (Cliff), Austin and Wyatt Olson of White River; and Chad (Lisa) and Bricelyn Pederson of Firesteel; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and four brothers. Sheldon “Bud” Reese Sheldon S. "Bud" Reese, 85, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at a local hospital.

Sheldon, the son of Sheldon F. and Blanche (Baumhoff) Reese, was born on Aug. 13, 1929, in Huron, S.D. He graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1947, and from the University of Nebraska in 1953. He was a lifetime member of the Nebraska Alumni Association and very proud to be a Husker, "Go Big Red."

Sheldon married Janet Risager on Dec. 30, 1948, in Aberdeen. He retired after 30 years with the USDA as a market news reporter, where he won the 1981 Distinguished Service Award. After retirement, he worked for Wells Fargo in the Ag Department for 10 years. He also owned and operated Reese’s Red Angus. Bud served on several boards including the ALC Board of World Missions, the Scandinavian Society, Riverside Lutheran Church, and the Enchanted World Doll Museum. He was a member of the Red Angus Association of American and a lifetime member of the Salvation Army, a 50-

year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Shrine Chanters, and an active member of Morningside Lutheran Church.

Bud found joy in making people smile and laugh. He had a very generous heart. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping and visiting the National Parks of our country, especially the Black Hills of South Dakota. He loved to drive, was an avid coin collector, enjoyed playing cards and loved his beloved dog, Lucy. Sheldon was an Eagle Scout and also honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Sheldon is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jan Reese of Sioux City; three daughters and their families, Rev. Susan (Rev. Paul) Stone of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and their children, Jordan (Jordan) Nye and Katharine (Billy) Harris and their children, Kyle and Evan Nye, Keegan Mersch, Gunner Sheldon Harris; Nancy Herr of

Kansas City, Mo., and her children, Aaron Harrington and Amy Rashele Tuso and their children, Dakota, Zachariah, and Noah Reese Harrington, and Landon Reese and Warren Tuso, and Laurie (Lynn) Mills of Sioux City, and their children, Nicholas (Jessica) Mills and Casey (Emily) Mills and their son, Reese Mills; and two sisters, Phyllis Pavelka of Rapid City, S.D., and Sylvia (Don) Andrews of Sacramento, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Melinda Jane "Buffy.”
