Letter from the Editor

Wow, my first issue! Seems crazy, but here we are, and it’s June already! Some of you know me, some probably don’t, and some have read my articles in here (I’m sorry to have put you through that). Some people know me as Chas, some as 3WheelerNut or Irish3wheeler. I like three-wheelers, and like most things from the 80‘s they seem to be coming back. I fell in love with this magazine as soon as I read it the first time. I thought the premise was the best idea for a magazine ever and couldn’t wait to become a part of it. I still feel that way about it, and I find myself in the unique position to be able to continue to grow Rec Rider. It’s my hope that I can continue the great work Jim Bull started here and expand upon it with everybody’s help and support. This didn’t become what it is by itself, and it didn’t happen overnight. I have gotten to know many people in the world that we call recreational riding, some race people, some Jeep and truck guys, snowmobile riders, ATV/UTV riders, etc., and Ill meet many more. The one common factor in all these people that I’ve noticed is the joy we each have for the trails and track and the desire to share it and to get others involved. Two, three, or four wheels or belts and skis, we are all out there for similar reasons: the trail, the fun, and the camaraderie. We have great stuff this month in Rec Rider. We have started accepting JR wRECking crew photos on our Facebook page for our young riders. Full safety gear is required to be considered, and just post them and tag them “#jrwreckingcrew” so we know to find them. There is the AOAA grand opening, we have race coverage – two- and four-wheel, ATR benefit coverage, a trike race at Breezewood Proving Grounds, some info from our neighboring New York riding areas, a Poker Run in West Virginia, and more of the great things you’ve come to expect from us. Thank you for letting me introduce myself, and thank you to Jim Bull for the mentoring and kindness you’ve shown to me during this learning curve! Enough of this………………………on to the magazine! I’ll see you on the trails! Chas. McHenry

Keystone Off Road Vehicle Association Inc. A Pennsylvania corporation formed in late 2013 with the intention of aiding and advocating the use of public and private land for an overlooked segment of the off road industry. The Corporation which also is registered to trade as KORVA has a principal office in New Cumberland, Pa. Company principals are John Mickle of New Cumberland, President, and Dennis Felty of Valley View, Secretary/Treasurer. The companies stated mission is; “To provide a unifying organization to represent the interests of Off Road Vehicle enthusiasts. This pertains to a classification that does not fit into the Modified Street or Mass Produced Off Road Vehicle category such as ATVs, motorcycles, and side-by-sides. The owners of these types of vehicles are currently excluded from the use of public and private land. KORVA’s intention is to provide a central entity to register, encourage proper land usage, educate, and provide a means whereby individual liability insurance would be available to its members. This is offered so they may enjoy the use of public and private lands which are currently available to others. The company is currently in discussion with several land owners who seem willing to make their land available to KORVA members. The next phase is to begin accepting applications and issuing memberships. The purpose of this phase is to be able to show land owners that there are sufficient numbers of off road enthusiasts interested in obtaining permits to use the various lands. To that end, a web site is under construction to better inform potential members of KORVA’s plan and obtain membership applications. There are also two e-mail addresses, which are available for inquiries. The yearly membership fee in KORVA is $25.00 but an introductory offer is being made to the first 200 applicants. These participants will be “CHARTER members, and their first year dues will be $15.00. Charter Members will be afforded various benefits which will not be available to regular members. The memberships will be available by mid June. Potential members may reserve a place in the CHARTER group by informing KORVA via e-mail. The web address is www.KORVA.org E-mail inquiries may be sent to: berrienbuggy@gmail.com or Themayorofcoaltowne@yahoo.com Dennis Felty can be reached at 570-640-5735 John Mickle can be reached at 717-439-5246

AOAA Grand Opening Imagine what it would be like to be a part of the team that changed the lives of a whole town, with ATVs. That’s what the AOAA Authority has done, with the help of many other people, in Coal Township, Pa. Rec Rider has covered many events and followed the ups and downs of the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area, and it’s finally on its feet, taking baby steps and looking great! I say baby steps only because it truly is just the beginning. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held the day before the grand opening with all the officials from the federal level all the way down to the local municipalities attending. Speeches were short, sweet, and to the point. Everyone noticed the difference in the area with the park going in and coming to life. Businesses have new signs, and Route 125 has signs announcing businesses that are close by and services that will be helpful to the thousands of people who will be coming there to ride and enjoy the park each month. Everyone who spoke was on the same page. AOAA will make a huge difference to the local towns and the people living in them. The park is opening slowly, as the western side still has some active mining going on, but the 2,800 acres on the east side will keep you busy as long as you’re willing to ride. There is no shortage of places to goof off and play. The trails are in great shape, and riding there is full of all kinds of difficulty levels with mud, water, rocks, woods, and pretty much the best of all the Pennsylvania parks in one place. The diversity is pretty amazing. Riders from Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania filled the parking lot on opening day. Yamaha had their demo rides and a line of vehicles there. The opening day was full of food vendors and local dealerships, and a new campground called Earth Day Campground had a tent there and was showcasing plans to grow to a full service to primitive camping resort with 500 spaces and all the amenities. It wasn’t hard to see the excitement on the faces of the Authority members, and it was hard not to get caught up in the thought that, as we were standing there discussing ATVs and the catered food, we were at the doorstep to a true renaissance for the area. It’s going to be a treat to watch the dreams of so many continue to grow and become reality. The benefits far outweigh the labors, and that will make itself obvious in the not-too-distant future. To the people with the foresight, hunger, and drive to have worked on this project for so many years, my hat’s off to you. You have done an exceptional job, and I am proud to have witnessed your hard work come to light. Congratulations, AOAA, and here’s to a long and wonderful run!

Grand opening morning, before the crowd.

JUNE 2014

The Birth of a Trail Project By Kathy Jeremiah

It was a little over five years ago that I heard Barry Yorwarth’s idea to utilize the 6,500-acre county-owned abandoned coal land in the Lower Anthracite Region of Northumberland County and turn it into a trail paradise for ATVs and full-size vehicles. The three county commissioners at that time thought an off-road facility would attract users from across Pennsylvania and neighboring states and could be the economic engine to help revitalize this area of the county. And so the long journey began with hundreds of meetings, numerous tours of the proposed area, and most importantly searching, applying, and securing funding for this large-scale undertaking that will eventually be known as the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. After securing approximately $3,874,500 in grants and having a master plan for guidance, we were finally ready to begin the design of the trailhead and construction of the 3,000-square-foot building that contains the three-bay garage, conference room, rest rooms, office, and check-in counter. Almost all of the grants awarded came with a matching amount on our part. For that purpose, we were able to use $1,212,645 for a reclamation project, funding for the youth ATV safety program, and a purchased supply of youth helmets and goggles. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has awarded this project over $2,888,000. The registration fees for ATVs and snowmobiles were a large contributor in the grant monies provided by DCNR, and this accomplished their goal to add another destination to ride ATVs in Pennsylvania. In addition to the DCNR grants, the AOAA has received grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission, Department of Community and Economic Development, Yamaha Motor Corporation, Polaris Industries, Children’s Miracle Network, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Academy of Pediatrics. The 6,500 acres that constitute the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area lie in the townships of Coal, Mount Carmel, East Cameron, West Cameron, and Zerbe. When it was agreed to pursue the idea of an offroad facility, it was presented to each municipality including the nearby city of Shamokin. Over the following two years, meetings were held with representatives from the municipalities to help them prepare for the influx of visitors to the Lower Anthracite Region. Meetings were also held with emergency responders. Three well-attended public meetings were held in addition to key person interviews. A 16-person steering committee was appointed with representatives from various outdoor activities for their input in formulating the master plan. On June 21, 2013, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the AOAA. Among those in attendance was Cindy Dunn, then-deputy secretary of DCNR Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. The deputy secretary said that while the AOAA is still in its infancy stages, DCNR dedicates full state support through its childhood and adolescence. She told the crowd that we can now sit back and watch our child grow. In turn, the AOAA would like to see all the users continue to come back season after season and continue to “watch us grow” each year as we move through the various planned phases of developing the AOAA.

Demon Run ATV Park On April 26 in Howard, N.Y., Demon Run ATV had its season opener Poker Run. I got the opportunity to speak with the owners, David and Vicky Dockstader, on the phone in February to line up the trip to ride their trails, and I got to meet some real good people that day. Dave and Vicki are old-school farmers in Howard. They were running their farm and raising their family when the idea came to them that an ATV trail system was just what the area needed. Too many people had been running illegally, and the tone of the area was beginning to turn sour towards OHVs, so they took it upon themselves to try to help. The local township and neighbors have been cooperative and helpful trying to make our sport more organized and accepted in the area.

Demon Run consists of just over 20 miles of very well-marked and maintained trails. It will take an experienced rider about three and a half hours to get through at an enjoyable pace, with no stops. If you do want to stop, there are places along the trail to stop, some with picnic benches, some just open rest areas.

We Rent ATV’s!

The trails provide a great mix of difficulty levels clearly marked by color-coded arrows, and there is always a go-around for those not willing to tempt the harder challenges. There is also a water and mud hole that is 3 or so feet deep, depending on conditions, where you can go have some fun roosting each other or navigating the murky waters.

with Hookups, New Bath House & Dump Station

It’s not too hard to see why Demon Run has gained such a good reputation. The owners are serious about their commitment, and when you are riding there, you hardly ever see the real world. The whole time you’re on the trail, it feels like you could be a hundred miles away from everything, which is a welcome feeling. We were up to visit during their Spring Poker Run. They also have two guided night rides in June and August, and there will be another Poker Run in the fall, but don’t wait for the events to head up there for a ride. People came in from all over the southern tier of New York, and parts of Pennsylvania to ride on that very chilly rainy day in April, which is telling for how well-attended a warm and sunny weekend may be up there. During their Poker Run events, they have prizes for events, such as timed mud bogs, an ATV balance beam, barrel races, and a 2,500 pound sled for ATV pulls. Check out Vicky and Dave’s trails at www.DemonRunATVtrails.com, then head up there and say hello. Hit Birdies Café in Howard for lunch; it makes for a great day.

BMER 7th annual “Lawton 100” Dual Sport The 7th annual “Lawton 100” Dual Sport ride was a great success. Not only did the 69 motorcycle enthusiasts’ have a great time and the Back Mountain Enduro Riders made a couple of bucks, but we promoted another successful motorcycling event where everyone left with a smile and good memories. That is the most important part of being a club, promoting the sport we all love. The Friday before the event we received around two and half inches of rain. We were all hoping for the best during the drive to the starting point on Saturday afternoon. When we entered the long bumpy dirt road to the signup table and we were pretty impressed with the condition of the surrounding fields and thought this might not be too bad. After setting up camp and unloading our rides of choice, up the mountain we went to survey the first optional hero section, and there was some mud and running water in some sections, but other parts were actually perfect. During this time is when we changed our thoughts from “oh no” to this is going to be great! There was a small handful of us that camped out and what a great night for camping. Stars in the sky and cool temperatures made for and perfect night. A little bonfire talk and some food and adult beverages capped of the night before a good night sleep in the fresh air. Sunday morning came and it was cloudy with some sprinkles. Riders and one passenger came from all over to enjoy this ride. Connecticut, Ney York, Maryland and New Jersey were the states I saw represented, and of course Pennsylvania. After the brief riders meeting, mandatory time out was 10:00am and most riders made the hard right at the sign up table into the first optional to start the day. The hero sections did get rutted up in the muddy sections and some people came out of them complaining about how bad it was, but their smiles were ear to ear so we know how much fun they had. There were a few showers and some actual

heavy rain at times during the day but they were very small and you rode through them without even getting very wet. After 3 to 5 hours of riding, depending on how many optional sections you did, we ended at the starting point for a lunch the included some amazing chili. By this time the sun was shining with very few clouds in the sky and clean up took almost no time at all. Having a chance to talk to some of the riders as they were loading up and getting ready to head home, I had no complaints about anything. A little rain, a little sun, cool temperatures, they all just made for a great day on our 7th annual “Lawton 100”. Thanks to Ed and Lee for most of the hard work on this one. Our “Down by the River” Hare scrambles are set for June 8th and August 24th. Keep your eye on our web site, www. BMER.org, or face book @ Back Mountain Enduro Rider. As always, Ride Safe and Ride Hard!

Trikes at Breezewood Proving Grounds MX Track By: Regina Swinger

PICTURE CREDIT: Jennie Fruehan Breezewood Proving Grounds, 4626 Robinsonville Road, Clearville, Pa., was invaded by TRUPA (Trike Riders United based in Pennsylvania) with our Trikes for their Spring Fling Outlaw Race. The owners of the track, Dan Harris and Amanda Krug Brink, have been working with our local group, which has been evolving and growing for the last 18 months. TRUPA has about 200 members and has been featured at multiple events, with Breezewood being our largest. This year, TRUPA worked with the Ohio Trike Crew (OTC) to make our Breezewood event one of the Battle Between States (BBS) races, and it also qualified it as a point series race for Trikers. Other trike groups that were invited include TPC Trikes, ATC Boys, NYTRO and Tionesta trike. Sadly, NYTRO and Tionesta trikes could not make this event, but we are looking forward to future challenges. However, the OTC, TCP trikes, and the ATC Boys made the show, helping to fill three classes of gates, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, and OPEN money class. The races are a One-Moto format race of five laps, with a ten-minute practice before the races. 2-Strokes The top four places for the 2-stroke class were as follows: 2 Stroke Class First place: Bryan Ditch Second place: Geoff Romesburg Third place: Brent Baker Fourth place: Lyle Offman

4-Strokes The 4-stroke class was a fun and interesting race to watch, with the racers battling all over the track for first place, but even with all the action going on everyone easily picked out the two Trikes to watch. The Ridgway brothers (Dave #131 and Sean #314), both on their 350Xs, were the highlight of the race. Sean had easily taken first place in the start lap while Dave had been pushed back to fourth. In the second lap Sean fought to hang onto first place, while Dave was able to pass #819, Josh Gettemy, and grab third. Sean continued to fight to hold first through the third lap while Dave was duking it out with #98, Buddy Voigt, finally passing Voigt and taking second place. On the last lap Dave got the advantage and passed his brother, taking first place from him and leaving Sean in second place in front of Toby Kuser (#79) on his 350X. Finally, Bryan Ditch, #97, on a 200X came in to obtain the fourth place plaque. This was one of those races that are almost as much fun to watch as it was to run. 4 Stroke Class First Place: Dave Ridgway Second Place: Sean Ridgway Third Place: Toby Kuser Fourth Place: Bryan Ditch

The Money Class !!!! This was a great accomplishment for us Trikers. To the best of our knowledge it’s the first 100 percent Pay out Open Class Trike race since the ATC Consent Decree back in 1987, effectively banning all production of three-wheeled ATVs. This was our biggest class race of the day with 15 Trikes at Breezewood’s gate for the start. The field was very diverse, with modernized conversion Three Wheelers like the 500R and the TPC 450R all the way down to the guys out there having fun on ATC 110s and Tri Z 60s. One of the things that made this particular race so much fun was seeing the big machines just tear the track up, while the smaller machines took on the role of Trike Rodeo Clowns out on the track, evoking smiles and laughter in the stands, the pits and on the faces of the racers once it the race was over. What a great way to end the day. Louis Mielke took first place on his Orange Crush 500R conversion, followed by Jeff Cantwell riding one of Mielke’s 450R conversions. Third place went to Brent Baker, who fought his way up from sixth place, while fourth place went to Bill Casey, owner of TPC Trikes, who somehow managed to come back after a breathtaking injury when he overshot a jump. Off Road 101

M.Woolford-Buchter New to four-wheeling and not sure what to do? Worried about damaging your $30,000 vehicle? Rausch Creek offers training classes for drivers on all levels. From basic 101 off-road driving classes and Ford Raptor training to winch and recovery classes, there is a class for everyone. Kyle Buchter, Rausch Creek’s 4x4 trainer, has more than 15 years of off-road driving experience under his belt. Along with Master Tread lightly training and becoming an International 4 Wheel Drive Trainer Association certified trainer, he provides hands-on, in-the-field training that shows people what they as the driver and their vehicle can truly do off road. The most popular class is by far our 101 class that will build a strong off-road driving foundation for those who are new to the sport. Seasoned wheelers have also taken the class as a refresher or as a way to learn a new approach or technique. The goal of this class is to show the driver what they and their vehicle can do off road without damaging anything. Designed with the stock or slightly modified vehicle in mind, this class will introduce you to approach, departure, break over angles, various hill climbs, mud/water obstacles, picking the proper driving lines, navigation and

how to respond to all types of terrains, basic trail riding skills, and vehicle specifics such as traction control. There is no “classroom” time; it’s all behind-the-wheel training. The 6-hour 101 class is offered once a month as a group class. This is a great opportunity to not only learn the fundamentals of off-road driving but to also establish new friendships for future trail rides. No special gear or equipment is needed to attend the class. If the scheduled dates do not fit into your schedule, we offer private 101 classes that can be set up on a date that works better for you. These private classes can be scheduled during the week or weekend. Before you take your vehicle off road, consider taking our 101 class so that you will have the tools and skills needed to make it out and back off the trails in one piece with no damage to your vehicle. Registration is required to attend the classes. For more info, dates, and times, please visit www.rauschcreekadventures.com or email offroadinstruction@gmail.com. Like Rausch Creek Off Road Park on Facebook and check out the new website, www.rc4x4.org.

Having a tire in the air isn't so scary. Learn how to handle off-camber situations and various driving situations.

Under the watchful eye of our 4x4 trainer, all skill levels can take training classes at Rausch Creek Off Road Park.

Designed for the stock or slightly modified vehicle, this class is perfect for beginners and seasoned drivers.

JUNE 2014

www.recrider.com

BE WATCHFUL OF WHAT HAPPENS FROM NOW TO NOVEMBER Over the last few months I have written several articles for RecRider regarding pending legislation and issues that impact the ATV and dirt bike community, ownership, and use. Below I have highlighted the status of these bills and a request to you to help change the status quo. HB 544 / SB 494 amendments to the Recreational Use of Land and Water Act. These bills were introduced by Representative Dan Moul (R-Adams Co.) and Senator Rich Alloway (R-Franklin Co.), with bipartisan sponsorship, and are intended to update the Act to include certain recreational activities not foreseen at the time the original Act was passed. The bill includes amenities, under the definition of “land,” needed by individuals with disabilities so they will have better access and opportunity to enjoy recreation. House Bill 544 clarifies that “land.” The bill also addresses the two biggest concerns expressed by “landowners”: the fear of being sued and the costs associated with being sued by providing for the recovery of attorney fees, if found not to be responsible for the accident or injury of the recreational user. Similar provisions exist in the Recreational Use statutes in the states of Maine and New Hampshire. HB 544 has been before the House of Representatives for more than a year; however, the House Republican Leadership has failed to move or vote the bill. Several commitments to move the bill have come and passed. The bill’s sponsor asks for your help by writing, calling, and emailing your representative to bring pressure on their leaders to vote the bill through. Likewise, call, write and email your state Senator to request consideration of SB 494. House Bill 2047 Amendments to Snowmobile/ATV Law Fueled by concerns of “clarity and transparency,” PAOHV requested the introduction of this bill by Representative Marty Causer. The bill would, if passed, require that the state snowmobile/ATV fund be split into two separate accounts, one to track ATV income and

expenditures and the other to track snowmobile income and expenditures. If you look at the income based on registrations of ATVs versus snowmobiles and consider the disparity in miles of trails available for ATVs versus snowmobiles, there is only one conclusion that can be reached. However, DCNR Secretary Ferretti “feels this would unnecessarily increase costs and budgetary complexity without helping to advance the department's support for either the snowmobiling or ATV communities.” She also commented that it “would only increase administrative costs while not creating any significant value.” These comments raise a whole lot of suspicion in my mind, and they should in yours as well. House Bill 2220 Dirt Bike Registration Introduced by Republican Representative Mike Regan, House Bill 2220 would require OHMs ridden off-road and dirt bikes to be registered with DCNR. Under the bill, these vehicles would be defined as ATVs. As such, it is the intent of this legislation is to allow these vehicles access to all ATV trails in addition to those already available for single tracks. House Bills 2047 and 2220 before the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee will hopefully be considered in June. If you want to move beyond the current status quo, your attention and action is necessary. You must call, write, and email every member of the PA House of Representatives, no exceptions. There is a very important election coming up in November, and our collective action can bring change. I saw it from this ATV community in 2001 when regressive legislation was before the General Assembly. Thousands of ATVers bombarded the legislature and that legislation did not pass. All members of the House and one half of the Senate will be up for election or re-election. Talk with your representative and senator and ask for their support on these issues. If they support us, support them. Do this, and we will prevail.

The Shriners of Logan turned in their Go-Karts for a day and rode quads in their first annual ATV Poker Run. The city of Logan came together to help make the Shriners’ effort a complete success. There were more than 95 machines registered for the ride, and more than 200 people in total came out to spend some time and some money to support their local Shrine. The ride was a 30-mile adventure through the Bear Wallow Trail System in West Virginia. The trails rode ridges that overlook the countryside, strip mining areas, and other towns, while the trails also went creekside and through dense forest. Along the way there were three stops. At each stop riders picked a piece of ribbon; when they had all three, they could go back to town and trade their ribbons in for playing cards. The game was 5-card stud, and the best hand and worst hand were rewarded with trophies. They also gave away a lot of door prizes and had some raffles that seasoned Poker Run planners would be envious of. Raffles consisted of a Roland Sands designer helmet, a Ruger .380 LCP pistol, a Magellan GPS, and a Browning Hunters Kitchen Knife Set. Door prizes were donated by just about everyone in town and consisted of hats, jerseys, T-shirts, goggles, ATV cleaning supplies, and all kinds of ATV accessories. The city of Logan even got in the spirit and had police and EMS crews on standby free of charge for the event. No Poker Run is complete without good food. It’s always best on a grill after a ride, and the Shriners didn’t disappoint here either. On the menu was fried bologna and onions, hot dogs, pulled pork, snacks, and beverages. People from town who didn’t ride showed up to grab a hot dog or a sandwich and just to say hello and show support if they could. It was very clear to Jeff Reagan, who had a large hand in making sure the event was on track and successful, that this event was met with full approval of not only the riders, but the town as a whole. Jeff and the crew were very flattered by the warm reception and willingness of everyone to help. The outpouring of support runs hand in hand with the Shriners’ creed, as their history of help and support is well known throughout our country and beyond. Potentate George Smith from Beni Kedem Shrine was on hand all day participating in the functions and enjoying the festivities. It was quite an honor to have him spend the day at the event, and it just made a great day even better. All in all it was a good day for riders, Shriners, and the people benefitting from the efforts of all. So to Jeff, Potentate Smith, and the rest of the crew who put this event together, you all did a great job and you should be proud of yourselves. Can’t wait for the next one!

Free Hands-On ATV Safety Training Offered in Roxbury During ATV Safety Week For one week this summer, from Sunday, June 8, to Sunday, June 15, the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) will launch ATV Safety Week throughout the country. ASI is working with certified instructor Dennis Mann, who has volunteered to provide free hands-on ATV RiderCourse training at Willow Hill Off Road Riding School in Roxbury, Pa., on Saturday, June 14. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 92 percent of all ATV-related fatalities are the result of warned-against behaviors, such as youths riding on adult-sized ATVs. Take some time during ATV Safety Week to learn about the proper operation of your machine, find out about helmets and other proper protective gear, and learn ways to dramatically reduce risk for you, your family and friends. The ATV RiderCourse is free for anyone who signs up for the ATV Safety Week class. Call 800-887-2887 to enroll. The free training will be offered at Willow Hill Off Road Riding School, located at 14617 Timmons Road in Roxbury. Additional partners all across the country have volunteered to provide free ATV RiderCourse training and other ATV safety educational opportunities. To see the most current list of participating training locations, please visit ATVSafety.org. The RiderCourse is also free year round for anyone who has purchased a new, qualifying ATV from an ATV Safety Institute member company. The ASI offers easy enrollment and details can be obtained by visiting the aforementioned website or calling the previously listed number. ASI also offers a free E-Course, available online 24/7. This online course is available in three age-specific courses for adults, teens and children. Students learn how to apply the "golden rules" of ATV riding in an interactive setting. The E-Course includes videos, pictures, and interactive games to make it a fun and effective learning experience for all ages. After taking the course, users can take an ATV safety exam and receive a certificate of completion.

.

S844182

The ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules 1. Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. 2. Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law – another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway. 3. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 4. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people. 5. Ride an ATV that’s right for your age. 6. Supervise riders younger than 16. ATVs are not toys. 7. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed. 8. Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course. The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute® develops rider training programs and promotes the safe and responsible use of ATVs. The ASI® works to reduce crashes and injuries resulting from improper ATV use. Formed in 1988, the ASI is a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America® sponsored by Arctic Cat, BRP, Honda, Kawasaki, KYMCO, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha. For safety information or to enroll in the ATV RiderCourseSM nearest you, visit atvsafety.org or call 800-887-2887.

CMATVA Dice Run Early in the morning on April 26, 2014, 95 riders gathered in the parking lot of the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails to participate in the first annual CMATVA Dice Run. In the spirit of camaraderie and teamwork, CMATVA & SSRT decided last year that the two organizations should combine CMATVA’s first annual dice run and the SSRT annual spaghetti dinner ride. This joint venture was planned to raise funds for CMATVA’s sponsorship of the annual Renovo ATV Cruise For A Cure and to increase attendance for the annual SSRT Spaghetti Dinner. 11 CMATVA members worked five different stations on the SSRT trail system with the final station being located at the spaghetti dinner. Everyone was given a score card to take to each of the stations and roll the dice. Robyn Smith was the high roll winner with a total score of 68 and Nathan Yinger was the low roll winner with a total score of 38. Ed Eisenhower, committee chairman for CMATVA’s Dice Run, did a great job setting everything up for the First Annual Dice Run to run very smoothly. We congratulate both winners and thank all 95 riders that helped make our first annual dice run a success. Last September at CMATVA’s 10th Annual ATV Rodeo, Larry Mayes from the SSRT and Henry Sorgen, President of CMATVA approached Andy Eldred owner of Williamsport Honda about sponsoring both organizations for this joint event. Andy not only agreed to sponsor the event, but also became a corporate sponsor of both organizations. We are grateful for his support and look forward to seeing Williamsport Honda at our future events. CMATVA would also like to thank SSRT for allowing us to hold the dice run on their great trail system. SSRT’s trails are well maintained and are open every day of the year. Larry and Trilby Mayes with their great support team do an excellent job with keeping the yearly membership fee at such a low rate of $20.00 per machine. I would personally like to thank Ed Eisenhower, our committee chairman, and all of our members that worked the event to make our first dice run such a great success . If you haven’t had a chance to check out what CMATVA is all about, please visit our web site: cmatva.org. Our album page is loaded with images of our past rides and events. The events page has our calendar of events with some details on each event. Some of the big events we have coming up are:

CMATVA is for you! I don’t know of any other ATV club that offers two or more guided rides a month for a family membership cost of $15.00 per year. And if you sign up before March1st, membership to PAOHV (Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicle Assoc.) is included. CMATVA membership also includes a discount at most of the local dealerships within a 75 mile radius of Lock Haven, Pa. We are a family type ATV club that promotes safe riding and respect for the trails we ride on. We do not have a need for speed, but do enjoy having fun in the different play areas when we stop for breaks, such as playing in the mud holes and climbing hills. Again we would like to thank Snow Shoe Rails to Trails for hosting the dice run. We encourage you to visit their web site ssrt.org to learn more about their organization and see what events are coming on their schedule. We also want to thank Williamsport Honda for sponsoring our event with the prize money for the two winners of our event. Please visit their web site at williamsporthonda.com Henry Sorgen, President of CMATVA

McGuinnes Flys at Crow Canyon Story by Troy Hill, Photographs by Troy Hill The rain held off, but the soaking we’ve been getting in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio made for slippery riding for all. Cool temperatures were again somewhat brisk, which I’m sure made for lots of mud and a tough time for the junior racers. The adults ran on a course of well over 500 riders, including many first-timers in most of the classes. The pro battle went right to the end with very close racing. One could have used a blanket to cover the top three. We also had a very good turnout for all the classes. Many riders received gas cards, and all Pee Wee riders were presented with trophies for simply finishing on a tight and technical track. Ask The Zone By The ATV Zone.com

Normally the disclaimer sits here, but this month we are changing things a little bit. We get some questions from people, and comments, and criticisms, which is great and we love it. One of the things we are asked the most is, “What more can I do to help the sport out?” This is a simple question with a confronted people on the trail, and I’ve even made a couple friends after huge assortment of answers. calling them out and talking afterward. I’d estimate that 99 percent of the From my point of view, the answer is just basic common sense: most time, people will be receptive. The point being, it’s all of our responsibility importantly, respect the land you’re riding on. Respect the people who pay to honor the respect shown to us by landowners, even if we have to cover for it. In a lot of cases that’s US, but in other cases it’s farmers, park owners, the butt of some complete stranger to do it. The five minutes waiting, then committees who run parks, and sometimes even corporations and businesses. grabbing the trash they left and rolling out is far surpassed by the hours of In any case, it’s not yours; it’s a privilege to use, and it can be shut down if enjoyment we get from riding those same trails. What if the trails weren’t there? we don’t act appropriately. Simple things can really make a huge difference while we ride. There is a farmer in Potter County that opens his field edges to ATVers so they can make it from trail to trail. In the last couple of years it has cost him over $40,000 to do this. The money came from losing the purchase of his crops when pieces of glass were found in the load. How does glass get out into a crop? Someone throws a bottle out in the crop, it breaks, it gets picked up by the machine when the crop is reaped, a few small slivers make it through the reaping, and the next thing you know, you’re out a good percentage of your yearly income. Does that sound right to you? At what point would you lose your cool and start cursing out the ATVers? Should someone who is showing riders respect by allowing them access to where he makes his money be disrespected so callously? NO! Not even a little bit. What to do in this situation? Well, for starters, don’t toss trash on the trail, EVER! Bring a bag, box, or whatever you want, but take it out with you. If you see someone throwing trash, say something; if you’re not comfortable with that, wait until they leave and then grab the trash. It’s about the landowner, not the riders who throw the trash. There is no reason to get into a fist fight with someone about littering or trashing someone’s land; just write down their plate number and call the DCNR because it’s their job to handle this stuff. The more we show an interest in helping them, the better the relationship will be.

There are young, immature riders, and there are people out there riding with no respect, and then there are the rest of us. The ones who toe the line, wear helmets, don’t bungee cord baby seats to our front racks before going riding. The ones who take our trash out with us, ride respectfully, etc. We far outnumber the ones who are essentially our opposites (let’s call them the “Dumdum Contingency”); they are the ones who get the spotlight, because almost inevitably their behavior causes problems and trouble. We, as riders, want more trails. Pennsylvania has a system that with a little tweaking (and a lot of lobbying) could make Hatfield McCoy pale in comparison. We have lobbyists and different groups like the PAOHV working on ways to accomplish that and other goals, and we need to put ourselves in the mix by being proactive about how seriously we take our sport. How should we teach the next generation to keep it? With communication and a little extra effort from individual riders, we can make that small percentage of the “Dumdum Contingency” seem even smaller and earn our good name back as responsible riders who care about and respect the trust we’ve been freely given by landowners. It’s worth our time and effort, especially if we want to be taken seriously. S842824

It’s not just trash, although that’s a huge complaint among people who allow us to ride. It’s also some people ripping up the land with their machines. If I had a dollar for every time I saw some whackadoodle just spinning wheels and cutting donuts in the middle of a trail, or even worse, off the trail in someone’s field, I’d be able to support my riding for a long time. I’ve

Along the same lines, stone and gravel roads and parking lots are not where you spin your wheels, cut donuts, and act like an idiot. If you see someone doing this, and it’s within your comfort zone, stop them! Those stones are flying up and damaging other people’s property. I know I had dings and scratches in my truck from someone cutting donuts. The young man responsible had no tag and gave me a false name, so I got stuck paying for it. My nice afternoon out with the family went from $150 to over $1,200 in a very short time for no good reason. You hear it all the time.

Dick Sellers Memorial Ride May 3 in the Adirondacks brought with it some cold weather, some cloudy skies, snow flurries, and the Dick Seller second annual Memorial Ride in the Tug Hill Area. Dick Seller was a tireless proponent and advocate of ATVs in the area and was well known by anyone involved in the movement. It seemed only natural for them to turn their Trail Development Ride into a memorial ride for this ATV pioneer and rebel.

overlooks and to take a break from the trail. It was rainy and cold when we were there riding, but my fearless leaders didn’t let that stop us, and we all had a good time. We traveled 35 miles and stopped at five of the 18 stops organized to get stamps on our cards. Once you had five stamps, you could continue to ride all you liked, as long as you got back to the last stop, the Flat Rock Inn, to turn in your card and see what you wound up with for a hand. It was a well-organized setup, and Joe Onyon and his crew had it running like clockwork.

The Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association, which is carrying on the work started by Dick, puts on the ride. It was a Poker Run-style ride Tug Hill is better known for its snowmobile riding and constant snow with a nice mix of wooded trails, some traversing fields, hills, and in the winter, but it has found the sport of ATVing to fit its mold county roads. There were plenty of places to stop and enjoy scenic of not only a good time but a good way to keep business in the

area and sustain an area that is economically challenged when the winter months are over and the snowmobilers are home waiting for next season. Their fight has taken them to the Capitol and to their local municipalities. The county has agreed to let certain roads open, and landowners are starting to come around to letting them develop trails on their properties. As with anything in this world, none of it moves fast. Businesses that normally would close their doors and wait for the snow to come back are digging into their savings and staying open so the ATV riders have somewhere to go. It’s a frightening thing for them as they see similar businesses going up for sale and closing because of a bad season, and ATV riders only just dribbling in. All the snow we all enjoyed at home this year kept many of the migrating riders closer to home as the snow was just as good there and money is at a premium for all of us. You sure can’t blame them for that, but it comes at a cost, one that these business owners are betting will pay off. The riding up there is a lot of fun. It’s not like other places I’ve ridden. The trails are real trails and just as good as anything in Pennsylvania or West Virginia, and the roads are a lot of fun. Its great taking a ride all day, then jumping on your machine and going to dinner, having a nice night out, then riding your machine back to wherever you’re staying. It’s the things we dreamed of when we were 12 and 13 thinking how cool the world would be if we could ride our quads everywhere. There’s plenty to see, too. Wildlife is everywhere; with the rolling hills, the landscape is beautiful, and if you like taking a break and having a snack on the trail, there are always windmills to watch up there.

The people who own businesses and the clubs and associations who are fighting for their ability to expand the trails and ride ATVs are working very hard to make ATVing a staple for their area. They have a lot of pride in what they have accomplished so far, and they have a lot of plans to do more. If you go up there to ride, make sure you stop in as many places as you can to say hello and grab a soda or a meal. Stop in to use the bathroom and buy a candy bar or a bag of chips; everything helps. Let them know you’re out riding their trails and what you like about the trails. If we support the businesses, then they can continue to support the trails and turn their area into a world-class ATV destination. And you’ll get to say you were there from the beginning, too. Well, close to the beginning. Rec Rider will be updating our ride area map of New York for the July issue with places to stay and stop on the trail. Keep an eye out for it, and if you’re going up before July’s issue, go to www. tughilladirondacksatv.com and set yourself up a good weekend of riding. You can also get information at the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce’s website, www.lewiscountychamber.org. Make sure you get a good map; some of the roads are permit only, and the inexpensive permits can be found at many local businesses.

Anthracite Trail Riders Benefit Ride By Tabb Felty Photos by Tabbs Photography A great way to start off the riding season was to be a part of the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) benefit ride on April 26. Not only was it the site’s first ride of the season but it also benefited the first responders of the nearby townships of Zerbe and Coal. These responders come to the mountain to help riders that are injured. Unfortunately, the attendance at the event was lower than expected, but weather conditions in New York and New Jersey were a major factor that prevented some folks from participating in this ride. Anthracite Trail Riders (ATR), a local ATV organization, was asked to put on the event at AOAA to try and offset some of the cost that is involved with an emergency in the mountain and to fund the purchase of equipment that is needed to respond to a call. ATR was formed in July of 2013 and currently has 415 members. There were 154 drivers, 23 passengers, and 17 children registered for the event. There are high hopes for a big attendance at the grand opening for the AOAA, which was set to occur on May 17. Treasurer of AOAA Mary Ellen Dilliplane said that three quarters of the riders at the benefit ride were from neighboring states. The riders had ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and full-sized vehicles, including jeeps and other four-wheel-drive vehicles. The ride was marked on both

sides of Route 125, south of Burnside, and included many areas of interest such as the sands and “mudroad.” All of these places are locations I grew up riding at and are famous sites in the coal region. The ride went extremely well, and the riders were pleased with the trails. The proceeds from the event will be divided between the three municipalities. Paying for the emergency responders at the AOAA has been a concern for some of the officials of Coal Township. Some believe that a five percent tax on the AOAA would ease the fiscal burden for township residents and the potential cost of emergency services at AOAA. Jim Backes, Chairman of AOAA, has asked the commissioners for the time to get the park up and running before finalizing any tax requirements. He said that after this season and next, they will have a fiscal history of revenue to base estimated expenses on, including potential donations to Coal Township and other municipal entities. A big thank you goes out to Reading Anthracite, AOAA, and Blaschak Coal Company for making this ride possible. Also, to the ATR officials for organizing the ride and to Dennis Felty for maintaining the trail and getting it ready for the event. As mentioned, AOAA will be open as of May 17, so make sure you all come and check out the new park.
