Letter from the Editor I can’t believe it’s been a full year since my first issue. What a wonderful ride it’s been so far. My hat goes off to all those who changed professions; it’s not nearly as easy as I thought it would be when I started this trip. But it has been great, and I’ve grown and learned quite a bit too. So yes, you can teach an ugly old dog new tricks. The last year has been a blur of new friends, faces, and experiences. All this is only possible because you guys keep reading this, so thank you!

Our Advertisers Little Boss Wright,
As usual, we are bringing you the best of what’s happening out there. Ready to Ride! If there is something you don’t see in here and want to, please let us know. Rec Rider is always looking for recreational racing and riding events and adventures. We got some great feedback from last month’s North Central Trails Initiative article. A lot of riders are very excited about what this means. Things are a little slow right now due to Pennsylvania’s election cycle, but we are soon going to start contacting the politicians hard and heavy, and that means you’ll be seeing lots of social media activity, as well as emails and alerts on when to call or email your local representatives to make sure your voice is heard. This can be done, and as a group, we can make it happen. Riding season is getting into full swing, and just wait until school lets out and all the youngins are out there ripping it up! Remember to keep it safe – helmets, goggles, headlights, all that bothersome “safety stuff.” There have been too many injuries and deaths this year already from ATV-related incidents. I’m sure you’ll agree that even one is too many. Enjoy the trails, let us know about your events, and take us with you. Don’t forget the #jrwRECkingcrew photos while you’re out there, either; we love to see the next generation of riders!

Line Mountain at Rausch Creek
By: Tabb Felty Photos By: Tabbs Photography It’s finally that season again: racing is upon us. On May 2, I spent the day at the Line Mountain race held by Rausch Creek, and let me tell you, what a turnout they had! They had more than 100 racers show up for this event. This race counts for points throughout their entire season. Now I’m sure most of you’ve heard of the Line Mountain races, but you may not be so sure how this race is laid out. Well, it’s a pretty large track that weaves in and out of the mountain. There are large rocky parts that can give the racers trouble if they are not careful, some muddy spots that can also be dangerous and cause overheating, and quite a few flat trails that give the racers some speed. While trying to maneuver a track that isn’t always familiar, the racers have to watch out for their fellow drivers who are trying to pass them or could be broken down. This is always fun to watch because the racers blast their horns to tell the other guy to move out of the way and then rush past him. While this track can be tricky, you would be surprised as to the types of vehicles that actually run this race. There are various types of vehicles that race at Line Mountain, plus various classes. There are stock Jeeps and trucks that run, and then you have your rock crawlers that pound the track, and there are also buggies that run in these classes, too. There are also a couple of modified Geo Trackers that also run. Then those machines are broken into classes by the type of vehicle, by tire size, and so on. Many racers put a lot of money and time into their racers so that they can run a few times a year. All these racers on the track are a minute apart when they start and have three laps to finish. Many are competing for best time, while others are just trying to finish the race. It was a nice beautiful warm day for a race, but that caused dust, another factor the racers have to watch out for. A lot of spectators came out for a good day of supporting their family members and friends. These races are lots of fun and family oriented. Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up racing one day. Hope to see you all at the Coal Bucket race at the Line Mountain track on Sunday, June 7. If you can’t come race, come and watch!

News & Views big success, with more than 480 riders taking part. This year, the race is an AMA National Series event, and we expect an even bigger turnout! The main race course is nearly 8 miles through diverse sections of woods trail with some rocks here and there. A fun “grass track section finishes out the loop. Well, not really “grass but open-type trail with plenty of passing! On July 18, mini racing will start at noon, and on July 19, adult racing will start at 10 a.m. Both events are spectator friendly. For those not interested in camping, the closest lodging to the race is only 2 miles away. The MainStay Suites offers a special rate, while rooms are available. This is primetime summer season, and they do sell out. See the ad in this issue for more information on the Mountaintop AMA National Hare Scramble. Eight-time National Enduro champion Mike Lafferty won the overall last year. Will he come out of retirement to do it again? We can’t wait to find out! Finally, mark Sunday, Sept. 20, on your calendar for the Moonshine Enduro. We’ll write more on this event next time. Valley Forge Until then, let’s get out and ride!

It’s been a long time since Valley Forge Trail Riders (VFTR) published an article, so now is a good time for an update on club happenings. Looking way back to early 2015, there was the East Coast Enduro Association banquet in Valley Forge. Our club was honored to receive the coveted “ECEA Enduro of the Year award for our Moonshine Enduro. This make four times out of the last five years we have accomplished this feat, and not many clubs can make that claim. Later in February, we held our club banquet at Chadwick’s Restaurant in Audubon. Members in good standing were treated to a free buffet meal along with various prizes and awards while they recapped the success of the 2014 season and looked forward to the 2015 riding season. Speaking of 2015, the cold, wet weather pretty much ended just in time for our spring roadside cleanup. VFTR has been holding these cleanups in cooperation with PennDOT for nearly 20 years on roads adjacent to the private lands of our enduro. The “goodwill gesture is appreciated by the local townspeople and landowners alike. It is a small way we try to give back to the area. More than a dozen members came out to help. Coming up fast is the second annual Mountaintop Hare Scramble on Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19. Last year’s inaugural event was a

MudFreak's News From NY
My Experience at an ATV Safety Course By Mike “MudFreak” Petrone
I was planning on day ride with a couple of my friends a few weekends ago, but everybody was busy. But then my friend Carl told me about a Safety Institute course that he was taking his son to attend in order to learn some basics on ATV riding. I decided to take the course, thinking that it might give me some new material for my next article. When I pulled up the training course, Kevin, our instructor, was waiting for us. After a brief hello, Kevin showed us where to offload our machines, and then we headed up to the classroom. We all sat down and went around the room, introducing ourselves and giving our reasons as to why we were attending this course. At that time, my only reason was to get material for the next article; everybody else's was to learn how to operate an ATV properly. He started us off with a funny ATV video and had us open our student handbook to do some reading about safety awareness. Basically, it was about the importance of knowing your all-terrain vehicle and always referring back to your owner’s manual for information. I learned that your helmet should be inspected regularly, as the protection qualities could start to deteriorate overtime from mud, water, or just being in your garage. I recommend that you check your helmet's manufacturing specs. I also learned that if you're in an accident with a helmet, it's a one-time shot; once your helmet hits the surface, it
should be replaced. Don't skip out on your helmet ... it could save your life! Then we headed to the outdoor portion of the course. We started by getting familiar with our machines, including becoming familiar with where the brakes, the headlight switch, and the throttle control are without looking. We went over the proper way to get on a machine in addition to going over the brakes. Then we learned how to shift our body while going around a turn or going up hills, among many other things. I highly recommend that every ATV rider take a safety course. I originally thought that there was nothing else I needed to learn, since I've been riding for 10 years now, but I was wrong! I learned a lot from these two six-hour courses. It was a real eye-opening experience. It really doesn't matter how long you have been riding; you will always learn something new or remember something that you forgot. I know for a fact some of you riders will say, “I don't need to take a safety course,” but that's your pride talking. Don't let your pride tell you what's good for you! Don't forget that we are role models to younger riders. If they see us taking a safety course, they won’t be embarrassed to attend one themselves. A big thanks to the Safety Institute for having these courses available and to Kevin Spencer for being an awesome instructor! Stay Muddy!

Motorized Events Guidelines Process By: Denny Mann
Over the past two years, due to the tireless efforts of Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicles Association, East Coast Enduro Association, the American Motorcycle Association, and Pennsylvania Trail Riders Association, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has negotiated the wording of the Motorized Event Guidelines, which affect all motorized events held on state forest land. These negotiations, however, would not have been possible without the political assistance of Rep. Mike Regan and Rep. Dan Moul, who were enlisted by the South Penn Enduro Riders club. With the help of Mike and Dan, the guidelines were reworked into an acceptable document for both sides of the issue. As a token of the ECEA’s appreciation, the Trails Access Coalition Political Action Committee (TAC PAC) donated $1,000 to each of the representatives. On February 20, 2015, ECEA legislative representative George Fetterman presented the donation to Mike at his Dillsburg legislative office. Then in Gettysburg on May 8, ECEA president Jamie Theurkauf and TAC PAC representative Merle Compton presented a check payable to the House Republican Campaign Committee in Rep. Dan Moul’s name. The TAC PAC was formed to support candidates, policy, and legislation that serve and promote off-highway trail riding. The TAC PAC helps build relationships with key lawmakers and their staff in order to ensure that off-highway user groups’ voices are heard before a law or policy is passed. The legislature is responsible for the land use laws and policies that affect off-highway users. Their decisions can have a tremendous impact on all riders - for better or worse! Contributions will help the TAC PAC to financially support candidates who share the TAC PAC's common beliefs of allowing and preserving access to off-highway users. Politics is as competitive as riding. Getting elected involves advertising, logistics, staffing, and money. It's important that we support the politicians who understand the heritage, history, and importance of access to trails on public lands. One thing is for sure: those intending on eliminating this access certainly know the rules of the game. Off-highway enthusiasts are encouraged to contribute, as well as qualified off-road manufacturers and dealerships. Any individual, corporation, club, or group that wants to see policy and legislation that permits responsible use of off-highway trail should contribute and in that way help the sport survive and thrive. Go to www. tacpac.net for more information concerning the TAC PAC. Special thanks to everyone who worked on the Motorized Event Guidelines over the last two years.

ECEA/MCI Stump Jumper Harescramble
Tegan Temple with the overall win in the main event.
and our next
ECEA/RecRider
Fast Kidz Spot Light
By: Joann Hauser Stump Jumper Harescramble was hosted by Motorcycle Competition Inc. (MCI), a charter club for the AMA and a member of the ECEA, on May 16 and 17, making this the second harescramble of the ECEA this season. This was another outstanding event put on with record turnouts. This two-day event brought 200-plus riders for Saturday’s event and approximately 500 riders on Sunday. With no rain for weeks and the weather being very hot and humid, the riding conditions were dusty and slippery on the straights and turns on the motocross track. However, somehow the trails held up and were not too bad. Even with these rough tracks, conditions were fast. First up on Saturday were the Pee-wee, with the top overall riders being Jaden Palmer in first, Kenneth Held in second, Canyon Richard in third, Ryann Tepper in fourth, and Leaping Logan Ritz in fifth. Following right after the Pee-wee, Juniors had their turn to hit the trails, with the overall going to Gavin Williams, and second place to Nathan Dunley, third place to Dylyn Hicks, fourth place to Justin Adkins, and fifth place to Weston Greenwood. Both the Pee-wee and Juniors took to the trails for one hour; their course did not include any of the motorcross track. Soon it was time for the Youth class to have its chance, with a hour and a half time ride time and an increase in track size that included the motocross section and more trails throughout the pit, giving them an approximate 9-mile loop. The overall win for the Youth went to Noah Palmer, and he nailed the Cycle Playground holeshot win for the 14-16 SM. Second overall went to Michael Beeler, who also earned himself a holeshot win for the 100 percent Goggle hole shot. Third place overall went to Landon Bruner, with fourth to John Manera and fifth to Jason Tino. Other important highlights from our Fast Kidz action include some of the other holeshot winners. Our winners of the 100 percent Goggles are Zac Garrison and Cole Hickman. The Cycle Playground holeshot winners are Zac Garrison and Gavin Williams, who took the overall win for Juniors. The Vee Rubber Lucky 7 are Donald Lloyod, Chase Williams, Lucas Seelman, Marc Bassetti, Rob Motto, Trevor Valintine, and Joshua Hartunian. Now for the next ECEA/Rec Rider Fast Kidz Spotlight is Johnathan Spafford of Forked River, N.J. Johnathan is 10 years old and has been riding ECEA and NEOC for three years, coming in fourth place last year in 7-9 65cc. This year he is off to a great start with two first-place wins and a second-place honor at District 6. He has also been doing just as well with ECEA with a fourth place honor and also came in in the top 10 at Sahara. On top of riding in the 65cc class, he has also been riding in the Youth classes to get some more riding time in. Johnathan also enjoys playing basketball and football when he isn't riding. He is also an honor student at Lacey Township School District. When Johnathan was 4 years old, he went to his father saying he wanted to learn how to ride a dirt bike. His father told him he needed to learn to ride a bicycle first, so Johnathan set out to learn to ride a bike all in one day. He truly has a passion to
ride, and in all of his spare Zac Garrison time if he not out riding he is playing basketball or football and being a honor student, you will mostly find him doing what he loves to do most and that is to ride. Congratulations, Johnathan, on earning this spotlight. You certainly have earned it. Sunday’s race came quickly with the morning riders. There were approximately 270 riders lined up on the start, and this was the beginning of a very tough day of racing for these riders. About 25 riders DNFed, showing that this race is not the easiest one. Pulling the overall win for the morning was Albert Santelli riding Sportman, with Johnny Manera in Schoolboy in second, Billy Durham in third, Erik Robbins in fourth, and Mac Hennaut in fifth. The main event started at 1:30 p.m., and the riders hit the tough, dry, beat-up track for two long hours and had an 11-mile course. Taking the overall win was Tegan Temple, with second place going to William Schoeneberg, third to Jeff Pasqua, fourth to Tanner Thomas, and fifth to Robbie Civilette Jr. The Cycle Playground holeshot taker was TJ Cacacie in A251+ Open and the PG Graphic Kit went to Samantha Hill in the Womens’ Class. She came in second place, with the first-place win for women going to Shyann Phelps. Congratulations to each and every rider out there! You all did an awesome job out there. Thank you, MCI, ECEA, and all of their awesome sponsors, along with Eagles Wood Township for supporting the ambulance and fire truck. A huge thanks goes to the Sylvia family (Sahara Sands and Gravel) for allowing us on their property. It’s because of all of you we are able to have these events. Thank you.

Rocket Vintage By: Harold Silbaugh
Cross-Country
When I first read about vintage cross-country races in the pages of this very magazine, my “That’s Cool!” alarm went off. A lifetime ago I had dabbled in some harescrambles and MX racing, but it had been years since I’d done anything other than trail ride or take part in MX track practice days. Full-blown harescramble racing makes it hard to keep up with bike and body maintenance, and MX is fun, but days of sitting in the chair waiting to run 10-minute motos lost its luster after a while. Being able to show up, ride for an hour, see some cool machinery, and head back home seemed like a good mix to me. So I resolved to hit some of the vintage cross-country events this season. This is how the first race looked to a first-timer. The first problem to overcome was finding an appropriate mount. Though my wife would tell you that there are already too many bikes in the garage, I didn’t have a running example that fit the age requirement, so it was off to the webbernet to see what I could find. I got lucky and scored a 1980 KLX 250 in great shape. Not exactly a race bike, but with this kind of racing you can get away with the “run what you brung” approach. With a little TLC, I had it in a place where I was pretty sure it would hold together for an hour. I was ready! The club laid out a 4.5-mile course with constant elevation change, lots of single track, a little bit of rocks, some wicked off-camber, a sweet hillclimb featuring a very steep tree-root section in the middle, and a couple high-speed breaks to give riders’ hands a break. There was even an "easier route” detour around two of the more challenging areas for the novices. How thoughtful. The club took everyone out for a parade lap prior to the race. Having not been in any sort of competition for years, my adrenaline was pumping even on the parade lap. After that, we had a few minutes to regroup before the start, which I used to replace my fuel tank vent hose, as the old one would not stay put and my full tank was spewing gas out the vent hole, all over the bike and me. (Thanks to the guys pitted near me for the spare vent line.) Races are a dead-engine start, so I fired the old 4-stroke up a couple
times prior to the start to make sure she would light off. She lit easily and quickly every time. Well, except for that one time when the starter's flag went up. So I spotted my entire class the start and followed the trail of blue smoke into the woods. I was so pumped up I figured I'd better get moving and get around as many riders as I could while I still had the energy. The single track made it tough, and the old KLX didn't have the top-end steam to make passes in the fast sections, so I would do what I could in the tighter stuff. I picked off some on the first lap, but somewhere on the second, my conditioning started to show. Back in January, when I knew I was going to do this series, I went back to the gym. Those 15-minute sessions on the rower or elliptical had me going strong for, well, about 15 minutes. I had to settle down and treat it like a trail ride and regain my rhythm as much as possible on the second and third laps. The bike, despite its anemic power, actually worked pretty well for this type of racing. The power was mellow but torquey. It had enough for the hills, even the big one - second gear wide open. The mellow power saved my bacon more than once in slippery conditions on side-hills and tiredarmed direction changes; just lug it down and roll it on. The leader caught and passed me right before the white flag, so I only had to soldier on for one more lap. Turns out I was not the only one feeling the "first race of the season fatigue." On that last lap I must have gone by three or four white-haired dudes pulled off to the side, helmets off, lying down beside their bikes. I'd shout, "You OK?" as I approached, they'd give me the Travis thumb, and I would continue. Overall, it was a very cool event, and it was lots of fun. I'm looking forward to hitting some more of them this year. So if you enjoy being around lots of friendly people, cool bikes (there was a great assortment of Huskys, Can-Ams, Ossas, and even Maicos, as well as a platoon of old Japanese bikes), the sweet smell of two-stroke oil hanging in the air, not to mention a day in the saddle, you should hit some of these events to watch, or better yet, compete. Is it a trail ride, a race, or a bike show? The answer is yes to all three. It doesn't get much better than that.

With the help of the Anthracite Trail Riders Club of Shamokin, Pa., a 33-mile marked course had been set up on both the eastern and western reserves of the AOAA 6,500-acre property. They assisted by selling passes, parking trucks, helping out on the trail for breakdowns, and directing guests to keep them on course.

Out on the trail, we got to preview some of the new trails that were just cut in on the western reserve of the property and had some great views of the valley south of the park. The trail also led us around the park and gave everyone a great tour of the park going on some of the flat and smooth, mud and rocky mountain trails; this park has probably the most diverse types of trails of any OHV park around.

Dave Porzi, director of operations at AOAA, said the attendance was amazing for being a new event at the park and a new record for attendance at AOAA also, with a rider count of 395. The $6,000 of donations was to be divided between the first responders of Mount Carmel Township, Coal Township, Zerbe Township, East Camron Township, West Camron Township, and the city of Shamokin. AWRCS: A True American
Woods Racing Championship Series
Photos and Story By: Jim and Megan Combs Round 3 of the series was held at Red Bank in New Bethlehem, Pa., on May 16 and 17. This race was the first Kevin Croney Memorial Run. So many sponsors donated great prizes for the drawings, which were held on Sunday afternoon. We would like to thank all of you for the great prizes! Thanks to Tucker Rocky, Jason Haugh, Western Power Sports, MRP Suspensions, Bentleys, Crossroad Motorsports, Stiller Motorsports, SRT, Instigator Racing, DirtWise, and Jason Thomas - just to name a few - the donations kept coming in daily.
M
Rider #42, Andrew Banovsky, took the overall win. For the adult quad race, 133 quad riders raced through thick clouds of dust, with Jay Shadron taking the overall win. A UTV round brought 17 racers to the starting line, with Offroad Motorsports taking the win. Saturday night brought some rain that continued steadily throughout the morning. 44 pee wee bike racers braved the rain and slick conditions, with Ryan Alston coming in for the overall win.
AWRCS now has a new podium. We congratulate all of you who rode your best to make it on our new victory lane! Friday night brought a bit of rain in the over night hours. However, the rain did not help the dry conditions; all classes during the Saturday races had very dusty conditions to ride through.
Next came the youth bike class with 56 riders. Congratulations goes out to Hunter Riemer for his overall win.
There were 33 racers in the pee wee quad class, with Haley Edwards taking the overall win.
The next round of the series was set to be held in Parker, Pa., on May 30 and 31.
The youth class brought 26 quad racers to the starting line.
Check out our new website at www.awrcs.com.
As the showers finally started to fade away, the adult class lined up with 267 riders. Pro rider Jason Thomas came in with the overall win.

Round 4, May 16, 2015
SpeedCiti, Seaford, Del.
Photos By: Delmarva Sports Photography
The Masters of MX made their way to Speed Citi in Seaford, Del., for Round 4 of the 2015 season. More than 200 riders participated in the oneday event that consisted of 13 motos with more than 35 classes. It was a warm day with overcast skies, but a slight breeze kept things comfortable, and the rain held off until well after the event was over. 50+ A and B were the first to take the gate, with Mike Farmer #51 winning both motos in the A class and Mark Henry #136 doing likewise in B. Farmer continued his streak and won both motos in 55+ A, and Terrance Newbold #856 had a great day as well, taking all motos in 40 and 45+ B. The second gate of the day brought out six of the vintage bikes. The 40+ C class lined up next, with 20 riders taking the gate and Samuel Grey #228 holding off the field in both motos for the win. Other dual motos winners in a class were David Hassell #653, 60+; Chris Schueler #682, 30+ A; Jeffrey McClure #274, 40+ A; and Matt Kazar #127, 30+ B. Gregory Hymiller #926 won both motos in 30+ C, Tyler Hayes #258 in Unlimited B/C, and Paul Quinn #93, 25+ B/C. In the Women's class, Samantha Resch #13 and Katie Coron #53x split motos, with Resch taking the final race and the overall win. Conor Legere #529 and Gregory Buc #318 split in the Beginner Class, Hunter Morgan #32 and Travis Chism #737 in 85's, with Legere and Morgan taking the wins. James Churn III #951 had finishes of 2-1 in Beginner 150, with Jack Dayman #18 second with finishes of 1-3. Open C had 18 riders, and Billy Boram #615 finished 2-1 over Drake Voell, #38, 4-2 for the win. Nick Bennett #98 won the first moto but fell back to ninth in the second for an overall fifth place and finished first in both 250 C motos for the win. More dual moto winners were John Tracy #41 in 250B, Paul Edlund #541 in 55+ B, Gregory Batts #52x in 35+ A, Michael Crocker #45 in 45+ A, David Callihan #41 in Open A, and Gregory Ryan #42 in 50+ C.
