Letter from the Editor Happy April! I don’t know how it is where you all are, but here it’s almost back to just grass on the ground, on top of some of the slickest mud I’ve seen in a while. And that’s just my yard. I can’t wait to get out and hit all the events you guys love to be at. The racing is starting again soon, the ATVers are going to be out in full force, and the adventure riders, the Jeep and truck guys, and the buggies are all waking up and getting ready to hit the trails. I can’t say for sure, but it seems even the hardcore had a hard time getting out and running this winter with the bitter cold, but by the time you guys see this we should be done with that. We have a good issue for you this month, including the return of the coming events section. We tried to make it a little easier to read and decipher which machines would be doing what, and I hope you like it. We are also going to be revamping the “Where to Ride” section of the magazine and making that more up-todate as well for May. As always, we want to hear what you’re up to and where you’re going. We have a tab on our webpage where you can upload all your videos and we can share them with all our readers as well. So while you’re flipping through this month and thinking about riding, make mental notes on events, then check and see if we have them listed. If we don’t, let us know about them and we will get them in. If your club or group is out on a ride, take some pics and make a story or just some notes and send it in; if we can’t fit it in the magazine, we will get it up on the website. Rec Rider is about us, the riders, so be a part of it and contribute! That’s all I’ve got. Be safe, maintain your machines, and let’s hit those trails!

KORVA Story The

Part 2

Photos & Story By: Tabb Felty, Tabbs Photography Last month we told you about the main idea behind KORVA. Now let’s go into a little detail about the masterminds behind the operation. Upon interviewing John Mickle, I found out that he never had a dune buggy up until about six years ago; before this he was heavily into sprint car racing. After he got out of the sprint cars, he said, dune buggies are another form of sprint cars that are a tad less dangerous and less expensive. John is the proud owner of Acme Car Company and just a few years ago merged with Berrien Buggy. This company and business is the headquarters for KORVA. John's company creates buggy chassis and sends them to a few vendors in a couple different states such as Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and some other states. He created this organization so that he could help off-road vehicles, including his, find a place to ride. This is not his only reason, though; he is trying to help take some responsibility for the off-road community along with accountability. A lot of people believe that off-road users, not only Jeeps and trucks, leave a place a disaster once they are done using it. John wants to help make a difference by making sure an event area is cleaned up after the event and that no trash or mess is left behind. He also believes that there needs to be a controlling aspect such as people in charge who can take charge of a group. Rules need to be in place so that everyone can have a great time but are also safe in the process. His main chassis builder, “Tank,” as he is known around the shop, decided to join the company in 2012 when John bought Berrian Buggy. This was a major move for Tank because he was leaving Michigan to come work for John in Pennsylvania. When asked why he made such a major move, he said that when he met John and heard his ideas he found that they mirrored his same ideas. This was a great opportunity for Tank because he could help put some of his ideas for the buggies into motion and help push the company forward into a new direction. Tank had 13 years of prior experience with Berrian Buggy and has now been with John for a couple years and seems to be a great match up for the company. As of right now, Tank is not a buggy owner but hopefully in the future will be a proud owner of his own buggy. The other mastermind behind the operation is Dennis Felty. Dennis has been riding dune buggies and off-road equipment for most of his life. He has also led some of the largest group rides that have ever been organized by one person. I can proudly say that I am his daughter and that I have grown up in the off-road community my entire life. I have been on many large group rides with my dad, and they have always been a successful good time. With much of the land we use to ride on now turning into state game lands, making it harder and harder to find places for unregistered places to ride, I'm glad my dad decided to step up to the plate and try and make it so that these off-road vehicles can obtain insurance and find places to ride. This has been quite a process, and I'm sure most of us would not even begin to understand the process that went into making this dream come true. These two men and many others who are helping with the process are making it happen. Now let’s go over some of the typical vehicles that you would find

on these types of rides, as well as the people who drive them. First up is Hans Scherer, one of the men who have been with this process and who wholeheartedly want this organization to succeed and keep pushing forward. Hans has more than 25 years of off-road experience and lives in Media, Pa. He has a 1988 Ford Bronco II Truggy that can be classified as a modified 4x4 and has the name “Zuk-And-A-Half” because that's more or less what it equates to; the dimensions, power, and drive train strength are all about 1.5 times that of a samurai. This Bronco has an engine that is a stock 2.9 Liter. It has a front Dana 35 rear with a Detroit locker, a Ford 8.8 rear end with welded spider gears, stock transmission and transfer case, 34x9.50x15 Super Swampers, and a full roll cage. Hans is a founding member of KORVA and has put his vehicle in many spaces that have defined odds and has come out in one piece; he is a better driver for it and also a great spotter. Next up is Bill Doney, who has a 1992 Jeep Cherokee that his daughter named the “Iron Rock Off-Road Jeep.” Bill also has a modified 4x4 Jeep, has only three years of experience, and is from Folcroft, Pa. What Bill has wrapped up into his off-road beast is a stock 4.0 L, 8-inch iron rock long arm suspension, hack and tap slip yoke eliminator, 4:88 differential gear ratio, and 35x12.50x15 Mickey Thompson baja claws on steel wheels. This Jeep started out as a mud truck and soon turned into a trail Jeep for his family. He loves the environment that surrounds KORVA and what it stands for and always has a great time on the rides. Another vehicle you might find is a stock 1981 Jeep CJ 5, which belongs to Kevin Carney with the name “Loose Nuts.” Kevin, who is from Media, Pa., is a very experienced off-road guy, with more than 25 years of experience. Kevin likes being part of an organization and likes that he shares the same values and ideas that KORVA holds. Kevin's Jeep is made of a stock motor and transmission, 4 to 1 low gear set transfer case with a twin stick modification, stock rear ends with a lock right locker up front and a full spool in the back, custom steering rods a warn 8000lb winch, custom skid plates, and 33 inch general grabbers. The next one up is a rock crawler and the one we have on display belongs to Charles Haws. It’s a full custom tube frame rock crawler with a gm 350 C.I. motor, atlas II transfer case with a 3.8 ratio, dana 60 front rear, a 14 bolt rear end both with chromoly axles, 5.38 gear ratios, steering brakes, full PSC hydraulic steering, 4 link front and rear suspension with 16 in. travel fox racing shocks, and 42 inch interco irok tires on 17 in beadlock wheels. The last but not nearly the least for off-road vehicles is the 1996 Geo Tracker 4x4. This is a stock production vehicle with slightly larger tires. Unable to pass D.O.T inspection due to body rust, this little guy gets me around all the events and makes it possible for me to shoot all the different kinds of vehicles and to write these articles. This is an excellent affordable introductory vehicle utilized by Tabbs Photography. All in all this is a great organization that is trying to get its feet off the ground. So if you may even be mildly interested please visit KORVA’s website or Facebook page. I hope to see you at the next ride.

Grand Canyon

Adventure Ride Story By: Steve Bottiger & George Fetterman

Trout season was going to open the middle of April in Tioga County, meaning a lot of trucks and fisherman at their cabins. George said, “Let’s go in the middle of the week and avoid the crowds.” So we did. The two-day ride started at my cabin in Snyder County, and by noon we were well into Lycoming County past Waterville and were fast approaching Cedar Run on Route 414. Earlier we had to dice it up with the monster Marcellus Shale trucks and road control Nazis, who tended to stop everyone. The valley-bound Route 414 is a nice ride in itself as it twists back and forth over the old NY Central rails-to-trails reclaimed for bicyclists. Your head is constantly swiveling back and forth to take in the surrounding high mountain scenery. The last train through was in ’72 before Hurricane Agnes washed out the line. I can still remember camping out with my new bride down on the Pine Creek at Tiadaghton in the early ’70s and feeling the ground shake as the freight trains roared up and down the canyon all night. The rainbow trout didn’t mind the noise. We caught trout all morning on streamers and spinners as trains thundered past. By late afternoon, George, on his big 1190 KTM, and I, on my “little” BMW 800GS, were making good time heading north on the dirt roads above Cedar Run on the west side of the canyon. Nice thing about being up high is that all the scenery is now out through the woods and down the valleys … no leaves on the trees. However, every dirt road switchback is in a deep pine-covered ravine complete with thick packed ice courtesy of the winter snowmobile traffic. And there were a WHOLE LOT OF THEM. This required a tactical riding style which included outrigger duck walking, alternating with left foot down full lock flat tracking … at 10 mph. No slow-motion crashes resulted from the sun-softened slush, and it kept the old balance in tune. We only passed a handful of vehicles

on these roads, due to the mid-week timing, and I think the icecovered turns had them scared off. The roads there have interesting names including Panther, Dead Man Hollow, and Mine Hole. If you had more time, you could spend a whole week just adventure riding dirt roads between Wellsboro on Route 287 and St. Mary’s west on Route 219. We only had two days, so we did a quick drop downhill from the West Rim at the very scenic overlook called Colton Point. Then we headed to Ansonia, and down Asaph Road parallel to Route 6 past the federal fish hatchery, and south into Wellsboro. We overnighted in the new Penn Wells Motor Inn and had dinner in the historic Penn Wells Hotel. The very friendly female bartender made sure we were well fed with an all-you-can-eat chicken dinner with iced tea and coffee. We were back on the frost-covered bikes the next morning after a free breakfast at the inn. Heated grips are the only way to fly. We took a quick detour out Route 6 to visit the crew at Canyon Motorsports KTM & Honda at Gaines, where George got a part for his KTM. John the owner is an old enduro rider from years past, and we knew each from the ’70s and ’80s, when the Canyon Enduro was a prestigious national event. He gave us a map of all the dirt roads in the vicinity, which George eventually appropriated for future rides. The return ride was a mish-mash of fast dirt and faster pavement because George had to be home by dinner to take his honey out. We did some very quick sport touring back down the Pine Creek valley, past Jersey Shore and Rocktown, and into Montgomery to Route 15 via dirt roads and back roads. These adventure bikes come into their own on rough paved township roads. Except watch out for the occasional Amish buggy or logging truck. We arrived in Lewisburg safe and sound, and our bikes looked like gray ghosts, just like they are supposed to look. What a great adventure ride.

State Rep. Mike Regan (R-York County), at the request of PAOHV, has introduced legislation, House Bill 663, requiring the registration of offhighway motorcycles (OHMs). In addition, House Bill 663 will address several other areas of concern. • The bill amends the Snowmobile ATV Advisory Committee by changing the name to the Snowmobile and ATV/OHM Advisory Committee and by eliminating the two non-motorized members and replacing them with a representative from Department of Community and Economic Development and the Pennsylvania Economic Development Association. • The bill includes OHMs into the existing structure related to use on designated trails. • A new section extends the limitation on liability to those public and private landowners who open their land for snowmobiles, ATVs, and OHMs. The amendment includes a provision for landowners to recoup costs if a landowner is found by a court not to be responsible for any accident or injury not caused by the landowner. • This bill would require operators of OHMs who are age 16 and younger to receive safety training and would hold harmless owners of land who open their land for snowmobile or ATV safety training. • This bill requires safety training and certification for operators of OHMs age 16 and younger. Training is required to be conducted by individuals certified by a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation Dirt Bike School. • This bill would allow a 72-hour grace period for a youthful operator to present a safety certificate. • This bill adds a provision that limits liability to landowners who open their land for safety training. If you ride OHMs and have been wanting to ride on ATV trails and to have access to additional OHM riding opportunities, you need to be involved in the passage of this legislation. If you want to join in support of these efforts, please let me know. Better yet, join PAOHV’s ACCESS ARMY by joining us. It is the best investment you will make for the future of motorized recreation. Fred Brown represents the Motorcycle Industry Council and PAOHV in Harrisburg. He can be reached at 717-319-1385 or fred-brown@comcast.net.

GPS Basics Story By: Mike Guzzi A GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a very handy tool to have on your ATV when you’re riding. These small hand held devices will show your location and, if needed, help you navigate your way back out of the woods. How it works is there is a network of 24 satellites orbiting the earth sending signals down. A GPS unit can receive these signals and when it can get a fix on at least three of these satellites, it can determine your position. Nowadays smartphones also do have a similar feature and usually will work well for most situations, including turn-by-turn driving directions when you need to drive to a specific location you have never been to before. Most phones do utilize the signal towers that provide your cellular signal as a means to determine your location, which does work except when you’re deep in the woods. Most newer phones also do have GPS sensors as well, but they are less accurate than a true GPS receiver. Many areas we ride in will have spotty or no cell phone service at all, and that will limit the use of a smartphone to be used as a GPS. In addition, constant use of your cell phone's GPS sensors will use up the battery power much faster than when it’s on standby. There are two basic types of GPS units. One is commonly referred to as a “field unit,” the type used for outdoor recreation. The other type is a navigator type, commonly used in vehicles for driving, such as a “TomTom.” The type of unit you would want to take out on the trails with your ATV is a field unit. There are many different kinds of field units on the market today with various features and costs. They all do have some common features, and that is what I will explain here. Some units are basic and cheaper, while other units have more advanced features such as custom maps and even cameras. Some units come with an internal battery that must be charged, while other units use standard size batteries such as “AA” type. If you’re planning a ride in the woods, it is suggested to bring along either spare batteries or, since most ATVs now have a 12 volt accessory port, a car charging unit. There are also many mounting options available for GPS units. Some riders like to mount them to the handlebars, and others prefer a different location on the machine. The choice is up to you, but you should be able to see the screen without much distraction, if possible. Typically, a

GPS unit will operate for about eight to 16 hours on a charge or one set of batteries depending on how it’s used. There are several things a GPS can do that come in handy when out with your ATV. The first thing is called a “Waypoint” or “Point of Interest.” This is a recorded mark of your current position that is saved in the unit's memory. This is done manually when you want to mark a location that is important. One such example would be to mark the location of where you parked your vehicle. This way you can use that mark to find your way back to where you are parked. It can also be used to mark trail intersections or other things you find interesting while riding. Most units allow you to put a text label of your mark and perhaps even a symbol to represent what you are marking. An example of this would be if you just made a waypoint of where your vehicle is. You could label it “parked here” and, if your unit has the ability, give it a symbol to indicate that is where you are parked. Another feature of the unit is to record “tracks.” When you’re ready to start riding, you turn this feature on in your unit and what it does is start recording a track of where you are going. This is like making an invisible trail of bread crumbs as you move about. As you ride, the unit will be recording your position in memory at intervals automatically and usually display on the screen the track as it is recorded. When you return to your vehicle to leave, it’s best to turn this off, as it will continue to record until the memory fills up and will have tracking data that you probably don't need or want. One useful feature of this track log is that, say you do get lost and want to find your way back, you can use the tracking data collected to trace your way back to your starting point, like following a bread crumb trail back to your start point. Some units call this “backtracking,” which will stop the recording of new data and then utilize the collected tracking data to help you navigate your way back. These tracks can be saved in memory and then later used as a navigation tool if you want to follow the same route again in the future. Some units also have a feature called “routes.” These are similar to a track log but are less detailed and take up less memory. Most units allow 10 or more routes to be stored into the memory and, when you need one to follow, can be called up and displayed. Most units will allow saving a stored track as a route, but some of the detail will be lost. More units today simply allow storing multiple track logs, which can be recalled as needed. A route is similar to a track log except the navigation is done point to point since there is less detail.

Most units also have a “go to” feature. If you have stored waypoints in the unit, say for example a really nice spot to take a break, you can tell the unit that you want to “go to” that waypoint. It will display where the marked waypoint is and how to get to it, except the route to this desired point will be a straight line or “bird's eye” navigation. The unit will also show you how far you are from the target, and some will even beep when you are close to your intended destination. This is one reason that you would want to mark the location of where you started: so you can use the unit to find your way back if you get lost. Depending on the unit's features, you may have a compass; position information, which may include elevation; and a map view. Some units come with a basic map, usually called a “base map,” while other more expensive units may include more detailed topographical maps. Some units even allow you to install and display custom maps, such as a trail map, right on the unit’s screen. Most units now also allow connection to a computer to store and save data. There are many different software programs available for utilizing a GPS unit, and some units come with a software package included. It can be very handy to save your data from your GPS unit for future use. You can also share this information with friends. The usual type of files that contain GPS information are GPX format, which contains waypoints, tracks, and routes. Other formats that are used with GPS units are KMZ and KML, commonly used with Google Earth. Consult the owner’s manual of your unit to find out how your unit can utilize these files. A GPS unit is a very useful tool for ATV riding, but it is no substitute for riding responsibly. You still need to follow the basic rules of riding and make sure your machine is well maintained. Make sure you carry some tools and supplies for when you’re out and about enjoying the outdoors.

TPC Trikes

A Wicked Evolution Story By: Chas McHenry

If you grew up in the ’70s or ’80s, you know what a trike is. If you are an adventurous rider now, you know what a trike is. If you’re not paying that much attention and you just ride in your yard, you know what a trike is. Let’s start with a general statement: No, those things are not illegal. Yes, there was a Consent Decree back in 1987, and if you want to learn a little something about bad politics then you should do some research and learn about it. Yes, people got hurt on them, and yes, the same people who created the Consent Decree for trikes are now focusing on side-by-sides and ATVs. And while that should make you not only curious but a little aggravated, it has nothing to do with this article. TPC trikes is the brainchild of Bill Casey. He wanted to ride a better trike. The 350X was made by Honda until 1986. Although there are a few reported 1987 versions, I’ve never seen one and no one can produce a US version. It was the most powerful 4 stroke trike built. It was a hardcore wheelie machine, and it was just pure fun to ride. The frames had weak spots, the engine could have used some tweaking, and sometimes kicking it over wasn’t fun, but what a machine. It had a sound all its own, the double headlights were instantly recognizable, and the tank and fairings gave it a sexy fast and timeless look. Fast forward to today and imagine a modern 450 version of the 350X, stronger frame, longer better forks, stronger triple trees, water cooled, electric start for the trail version, and available as a kit to build on your own or as a complete bike from TPC. I met with Bill Casey over the winter and saw his production facility, his works in progress, and a complete unit. He demonstrated his engineering to me and explained all the reasons he did what he did and why he didn’t do other things. Most impressive was when I walked his fork set up through the garage. With me holding the handlebars and acting as the rest of the machine, the forks’ triple trees and front wheel turned and rolled almost effortlessly across the shop floor. When compared to the fork set up off of a 250R, which I had to push and fight

to turn, it was easily one-half to one-third the effort to move a heavy and longer TPC set up. This is only part of the innovation Bill has engineered into these machines. With parts from a 450 Honda ATV and a 450 Honda Dirt Bike mixed in with custom fabricated parts designed by TPC, he has taken the trike to a new level. There are other builders out there, but as far as I’m concerned, with what I’ve seen, TPC is hands down the best. His trikes are winning races head and shoulders over other conversions and rebuilt old-school trikes. He is known throughout the trike racing world, for better or worse, as Bill the TPC guy. Trike racing is almost emotional. Trike owning is almost emotional. You have to love these machines. It’s not a weekend affair; you live it and breathe it. I’m 45 years old with two kids, and my collection comes after the kids and before the dogs. Any time there is strong emotion, there is sure to be strong debate, for lack of a better word, and it sure is in play here. Bill is a polarizing person; some people love his creation, some say he is a hack, and some dislike him for his seriousness and interpret it as arrogance. But facts are facts, and his machine has held up the best, won the most, and shown up most often. Over the course of the next couple of months, we will talk to Bill about his motivation, his conversion, his races, and what he wants to see happen next. I’m even going to go ride one of these things and try to sneak it out of the interview under my shirt. I’m that excited to go ride it, and from all reports it really is just that good. Look for the follow-up articles in the next few issues and start saving your pennies because TPC isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and before all is said and done, you’re going to go back the feeling of being a teenager in your bedroom with torn-out ATV magazine pages taped to the wall and eating your heart out to have one of these things.

What's up, riders? Here are three ATV events that are held annually in the spring and are worth checking out. I’ve also included a brief description of each event. Each ride is held for a great cause, from helping children with special needs to helping a particular family out to supporting your local fire department with building maintenance, and so much more. To the organizations, landowners, and volunteers: thank you so much for taking time out of your day to host these absolutely awesome events! Sullivan County ATV Association The Sullivan County ATV Association will hold its annual winter ride on Sunday, March 29. This event is a charity ride; the proceeds from this event go to families with special needs children and the organizations that support them. It's about a 35- to 45mile self-guided ride through some great trails. You are definitely going to work up an appetite after this ride, so load up the machine and take a walk over to Mr. Willy's for some good food! Tony, one of the organizers of the event, said that they are working on an all-inclusive weekend ride package. Sounds like some cool stuff coming up! Tar Hollow ATV Ride The first ride of the year is set for Sunday, May 31, and it’s a two-day event. The proceeds from the event will go toward maintenance of the property and future events. Gates will open at 4 p.m. on Saturday night, May 30, for camping; that night, they are also having a guided night ride. From what I'm hearing, this year they are not following the Jeep course. Instead, Tar Hollow has all new trails and will be a 20- to 25-mile self-guided ride. It sounds like Tar Hollow has been working hard this winter to make this event even more awesome, like they always do! For food, you have the option to grill or to stop at the Cook House for some great food; the chili is off the hook! I’m hearing that there's a new mud section. That’s got my wheels turning… super excited…can't wait! Smallwood Mongaup Valley Fire Co ATV Eighth Annual ATV Rally Fundraiser This event will take place on Saturday, June 6. This ride is self-guided, is approximately 30 miles long, and is expected to last about three hours. All the money made from this rally will go toward keeping up with fire department maintenance. In previous years, riders had to cross the roads to have access to different trails. This year, the local landowners agreed to let the riders cross through their property, knowing that the crew members will go back and repair any damage to their property from the quads. After all this riding, stop down on the main field for some BBQ food! If you think about it, these events are not only fun, but they are easily accessible. There are really no other organized places that are closer to ride; other rides require you to drive five to eight hours to get there. For all of the above events, you can drive roughly two and a half hours; that's a lot closer in my book! If it wasn't for these three awesome events and the amazing landowners who open their properties to a bunch of crazy ATV enthusiasts, we would have to drive a lot farther to ride. I was chatting with an organizer from the Tar Hollow event, and I asked why he is involved in these rides. His response was that they really enjoy meeting ATV enthusiasts and making new friends. That's what it's all about: meeting people, helping a charity, helping the local fire department by keeping their equipment maintained, and having fun. So for that, we thank you very much for hosting events! Until the full articles of each these events come out…Stay Muddy!

Now that you know all of the hard work that goes into building a trail – remember to treat all of the trails you ride on with care, but also remember that someone built them so that you can have fun!

Mud Pit Building a Riding Trail

Some of the ECEA FAST KIDS LOVING OUR MAGAZINE

Words by Stephanie Gehman

So, have you ever wondered how the trails you love to ride on are built?

We’re going to take a quick look at the steps taken to construct one. The first

step is a survey team or firm is hired to examine the land. This team will look at

every detail of the land being considered for the trail: slopes, rocks, waterways, wildlife habitats and more. They will then make a recommendation on whether or not the land could successfully support a high traffic trail for off-roading vehicles.

If the “green light” is given to move forward with constructing the trail, an

engineer will design and map out a course for the trail that is safest for both the

trail users and the land and habitats surrounding it. The trail design will then be given to a construction team who then clear away trees, rock, underbrush and the like, along with constructing necessary bridges over any waterways. The construction team will also lay any gravel or materials needed to increase traction and safe passage on the trail for riders.

Next the trail will be test driven by experienced riders to make sure that its as safe as possible for use by riders and off roaders of all abilities. Any changes

and improvements that arise from testing it out will be made to the trail. Some kinds of improvements that often arise in this phase of trail building are:

widening a trail width by removing more trees or underbrush, reinforcing steep grades to reduce erosion and increase traction, or remapping a course to aid in easier passage around big obstacles.

Once all of the improvements have been made, the trail will be tested again

and if its given the “a-okay” it is than typically marked with signs to help guide riders along and then opened to the public for riding and off-roading! If you have had the opportunity to ride on a brand new or newly opened trail – we

would love to hear which one and how it went! Email us or connect with us on Facebook to share your off-roading stories!
