Letter from the Editor

WELCOME to the May issue! It’s almost my one-year anniversary of putting this together for you guys, and I couldn’t be happier to be here. I appreciate all the kind words we get each month and all the ideas we get, as well. Thank you for continuing to support Rec Rider and make it what it is. As you read this month’s issue, you’ll notice the “Where to Ride” section is missing. We did that on purpose. The Central Mountain ATV Association has taken the ball at the request of Clinton County and is working extremely hard with the county to initiate a new trail system that will set Pennsylvania on the way to competing with our neighbors for the best trails. This proposal has been well thought out by the areas politicians, riders and the CMATVA and has been submitted to the appropriate agencies for approval and to work out any problems or roadblocks that could get in the way. It has been guided and watched over by all the best people you could hope to have involved. It is clearly the best use of all the resources available to us and could be a reality with some urging from you and I, channeled properly to the appropriate elected officials. Keep your eyes on this magazine, and each month we will give a detailed update on what’s happening, which websites and Facebook pages to look through and how it all seems to be going. We will also be including a sign-up list for emails and sending form letters and petitions out to be digitally signed and forwarded to your particular representatives. This is a REAL POSSIBILITY; all we have to do is stop sitting in our chairs and wondering why they aren’t doing something and start telling them what WE want. They can’t fight for us if they don’t hear us ask. This could easily be a true Renaissance for the off-road community in Pennsylvania if we work together. Once this is out, no one can blame them; now the fight is in our hands. We are they now, and the people we elected to represent us need to start referring to us as they. There is much more to come; this is very exciting, and we should be proud of this group for starting the process.

SCATV Charity Run 2015 By Mike “MudFreak” Petrone

MILLERS TURF & TRAIL MIFFLINBURG, PA 17844 570-966-1952 FULL LINE DEALER

SCATV normally has a winter ride in February, but there was way too much snow this year to have one. This year, it was pushed back to March. Although they generally have an April ride, SCATV doesn’t have back-to-back rides because it will tear up trails too much. Unfortunately, their next event will be in the fall. Let’s get into this past ride. SCATV is a nonprofit organization, and this money will help so many families with special needs children. There were about 216 riders, and SCATV raised $9720.00. Let’s not forget all the volunteers that assist with this event. We’d like to send out a big thanks to the local landowners for allowing us crazy ATV riders to use their properties. The owners will be honored with a special dinner…that’s pretty cool! The best part of this ride is that it’s only 2.5 hours away from most places. It’s really hard to find places to ride that are close by and without getting in trouble. A bunch of my friends enjoy this event; it’s more like a tradition for us. We always look forward to coming to this ride, and so many other riders do, as well. It has a great atmosphere; everyone is excited to be here to ride. From its 30 to 40 miles of gnarly trails and sweet views to Mr. Willy’s great food to their awesome staff, it’s a great event. The day started for me at 5 a.m. I got ready and headed up with the crew. We all rolled up to the event around 8, and it was packed already. I recommend that you fill out the registration form at home before you get to the event. This way, you will have more time to hang out with buddies or check out other quads or meet other riders. Tony, one of the organizers, then gathers all the troops for a quick talk about safety, being cautious to your fellow riders, and to stay on the marked trails. We all line up at the beginning of the trail, and it’s go time! Tony just barrels down the trails, drifting around icy turns, going up and down rocky hills. Then, it’s back to the snow, and next, right back to that hard-packed dirt because it’s been so cold up there. From riders ripping back and forth on the snow, the land is starting to warm up, inviting mud to show up to the party in some spots (for which this guy was very grateful). Cruising down the trails, we come across a frozen pond. Nothing like sliding into your friends or seeing how many donuts you can do without falling off! On some parts of the trail, there was about 12” of snow! It was crazy; I was sliding into trees because if there is snow, there’s ice. One of my favorite parts is this open field, where you can hit 50mph on that or more. It’s a blast. Who doesn’t like to go fast?! After racing on the field, we stopped by the pit; it’s a rock quarry with hills and jumps and so much more. I was a little bummed out that we couldn’t ride all the trails; there was way too much snow over in the other parts of the trail. It’s all good though; I still had a blast! Cant wait for the fall. We’ll see you there!

Off-Road Recreation Legislative Issues

April 14, 2015 Members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly Frederick C. Brown, Advisor Legislative Issues

The Pennsylvania Off Highway Vehicle Association (PaOHV) is the statewide voice of off-road recreation. We represent enthusiasts, rider clubs, and equipment dealers. Our mission is to advocate for expanded riding opportunities, safe riding, and environmental stewardship. Off road recreation--riding ATVs, off-highway motorcycles, or side-bysides--is a safe, fun, family-oriented form of recreation when engaged under the right conditions in the right place and with the right safety considerations. It should be noted that off-road recreation, exclusive of snowmobile riding, contributes $2.2 billion to Pennsylvania’s economy each year and employs 50,000 of our citizens. There are nearly 300,000 registered ATVs, and we estimate nearly half that number of off-road motorcycles. We suggest that development of a well-constructed and environmentally sustainable trail system on state forestland in conjunction with access to private land would curtail the illegal riding problems that exist. Empirical national evidence has increasingly demonstrated that access to trails manages the negative impacts of no trail system at all. To this end, PaOHV urges support of the following legislative initiatives: House Bill 544 and Senate Bill 72 - These bills enjoys bi-partisan support and amend the Recreational Use of Land and Water Act. The

act encourages landowners to make land and water areas available to the public for recreational purposes by limiting liability in connection therewith. House Bill 663 - Amends Title 75 (Vehicles), Chapter 77 further providing for the registration of off-highway motorcycles, adding definitions, for certificate of title, for transfers, for records, for ATV Advisory Committee, for liability, liability insurance, & editorial changes. Senate Bill 648 - Amends Title 75 (Vehicles), Chapter 77 by making changes to the restricted account, grant-in-aid provisions and the advisory committee. House Bill 970 – Amends Title 75 (Vehicles), Chapter 77 by making changes to the restricted account, grant-in-aid provisions and the advisory committee. Additionally, the bill addresses issues related to liability. It is our belief, based on the successes experienced in other states, that passage of these proposals will conserve our natural resources, expand and preserve access to open space for all forms of recreation, while attracting tourism dollars and expanding the economic benefit to the commonwealth. For more information on these bills, visit the following link: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/?mobile_choice=suppress. As always, you may contact me at 717-319-1385 or email at fred-brown@comcast.net.

Bike Course

For 2015, we are happy to announce that Beta will be sponsoring The Dual Sport Series and Yamaha will be sponsoring The Adventure Series. Last year a considerable amount of our course was in jeopardy due to the new DCNR guidelines but after a thorough review of our event, DCNR was quite pleased with the cooperation of the club and all the riders. As a result they are willing to give us some additional single track trails for riding this year. As we are getting more experience in setting up for the Adventure Bike course we feel it is becoming quite appropriate for the bikes and more of what the riders would like to see. North Central Trail Initiative

For the Express By: Jessica Welshans

If you travel to some southern states, even to the West, you might pass an ATV cruising along the road. It may make a Pennsylvanian turn their head a little harder, because here ATVs are limited to private ground and designated trails. Something has been in the workings to hopefully change that. The Central Mountains ATV Association – a large club of ATV and UTV riders originally formed in this area – has been working on a way to get these kind of “off-roaders” connected. The club is comprised of more then 500 members who hail from all over the state from Wilkes-Barra, to Allentown, Harrisburg and even from other states. “There seemed to be this collective interest in expanding opportunity for people to ride, and many are family riding oriented,” Rich Wykoff, tourism coordinator for the club, said. As the club rolled the idea around how they could expand trails in the region, the Clinton County Economic Partnership tourism committee began to look at the economic impact of what a larger riding opportunity could bring. “The Clinton County Economic Partnership Tourist Promotion Agency supports the responsible development of additional legal ATV trails that can enhance the riding experience and at the same time connect the riders with local businesses,” Pete Lopes, director of chamber and tourism for the partnership, said. “In rural Pennsylvania small businesses need all the help they can get. If we can use existing snowmobile trails and some township roads to connect riders with restaurants, gas stations and lodging, it could mean the difference between keeping a business open or closing.” Wykoff said they looked to neighboring state West Virginia and its famous Hatfield and McCoys trail system as a model for what they wanted to do here. “We talked to them and found out in 2014 they completed a second impact study so we had fresh data to work with. There were significant income for that state that comes from ATV business, and a lot of it comes from PA,” Wykoff said. A map has been developed with more than 800 miles proposed for this trail system. The PAOHV Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicle Association, who represents recreational riding in the state, is helping the club get rolling by giving them tips on do’s and don’ts. The Clinton County commissioners have also been involved; all three Commissioners--Pete Smeltz, Joel Long and Jeff Snyder--are in support of the ATV trail happening. “We are going around with a representative from the ATV club and talking to municipalities. We are being well received,” Snyder commented. He said they have been to Beech Creek Borough, Woodward and Gallagher Townships and some others in the county and are making appointments to speak with others that would be involved with the trail. The proposed trail will connect trail systems already in place starting in places starting in Clinton County like The Bloody Skillet – which is maintained and regulated by DNCR. The club said it will encompass township roads, to which each township will have to give permission to use. “We are getting a starting point where we can take some existing

trails, and the municipalities can pass an ordinance to allow ATVs to ride on township roads,” Snyder said, adding only township roads and not state routes – unless the trail only crosses over those. A proposed trail will connect Clinton, Centre, Potter, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, Cameron and a small portion in Lycoming County and moves into four state forest districts and 59 townships. Henry Sorgen, club president, said the townships proposed have almost all been visited and know about the trail idea. Sorgen said they have found ways to help pay for signage and also deal with the big worry--liability. “We are saying to townships we can use your township roads and bring money to your businesses and townships. We are finding out we have got government service to help pay for the signage and grunt work, and we tell them ways through legislation and zoning that you can take away the liability,” Sorgen said. Commissioner Snyder said the county is working with an environmental consultant engineering group to get the scope of the work it will take to put this trail system in. The county is funding this effort and will be eventually looking into grant funding to help it along. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources monitors, maintains and regulates legal trail systems across the state located on state forest ground. Some of those trail systems are the ones the club is trying to connect to, but the club is avoiding any “new” areas using state forest roads or land. Sorgen said this proposed trail system plays into the DCNR Gap study, which according to the agency is a trail gap analysis study that was intended to be the first step in a long-term process shedding new light on gaps in the statewide trail network and revealing attitudes that will help shape trail building strategies and funding policies over the next five years or more, released last August. “After the county commissioners and tourism of Clinton County approached us with helping with this…and DCNR coming out (with GAP study) we figured if we connect our own state trail system it would be perfect to do something that coincides with DCNR,” Sorgen said. The state agency has met with the club and now has viewed the map. There are very few places where the trail touches on state forest roads or trails not already approved for ATVs. “The Central Mountain ATV Association is in the process of working with DCNR to design a system that utilizes existing snowmobile trails and former logging roads to join small communities and minimize impacts on the environment and on other users,” Senator Joseph B. Scarnati, Republican 25th District, said. The proposed trail is designed using municipality roads, pre-existing trails that run parallel to forestry roads used for snowmobile trails, power lines and pipelines, and some low use forestry roads, to which they said DCNR will have to advise the club on, Sorgen said. Only about 200 miles of the 814 proposed will even be on DCNR regulated land that is outside of the designated ATV trail systems already in place. “Our meeting with DCNR was productive. At this moment it seems that the GAP study is on the back burner, but there are a few areas they saw where they may be able to work with us, ” Sorgen said.

“Bureau of Forestry personnel have met with proponents to discuss a very conceptual plan proposing a series of connections through state forest lands via township roads and private properties that essentially would link four existing state forest ATV trail systems. We are reviewing that proposal. We are not considering use of state forest roads to make any of these connections,” Terry Brady, deputy press secretary for the Bureau of Forestry and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said. “There is not private ground involved except what is already in existence in Potter County, one piece in Beech Creek and small patch of woods to get to the connector,” Sorgen said. Also included in these 800-plus miles is the membership-driven Snow Shoe Rail Trail, a large ATV trail located in Clinton, Clearfield and Centre counties. SSRT has played an integral part in planning the new system. Conservation has been kept in mind and at the forefront in planning the trail’s route. The club said they are avoiding sensitive areas that should not be disturbed. “Protective lands like swamps that have unique species that exist nowhere else, we are doing everything we can to skirt them and their watersheds,” Wykoff said. The drive isn’t just about riding opportunities, but also how to keep businesses in these very rural areas in business. “A lot of key stakeholders which are businesses. Coudersport Pike…all of who would like us to do something because their business is dropping off,” Wykoff said. “Cross Forks, same thing there.” Snowmobilers bring in commerce, but only during winter months and when there is a good winter to ride. “There is no doubt that that the closing of the Kettle Creek and

you’ll love

Whiskey Springs area riding trails, due to the coal remediation project, has had a negative impact on local hotels, restaurants and businesses. The increased riding opportunities proposed by Central Mountains ATV club will increase tourism and have a very positive effect on local businesses,” State Representative Mike Hanna of the 76th District said. The proposed ATV trail system will allow riders to get through two or three towns, stop for gas, food or even stay and keep moving on. “There are hundreds if not thousands of people (from here) who go to West Virginia. That doesn’t make sense for our citizens to be spending dollars in another state … we should keep the dollars here and get business growth from it,” Commissioner Snyder said. “An ATV trail system promises to have a significant impact on local economies that are struggling and will be a boost to small, family-owned businesses that provide food, lodging, and services,” Senator Scarnati said in the Clinton, Potter, Jefferson, Elk, Centre, and Lycoming County areas. In December of last year, there were 162,241 active ATV registrations and 101,112, limited ATVs registered. For snowmobiles registered there are 34,314 and 2,733 limited registered. Limited registered means machine sold, but not registered. “I have been a staunch proponent of connecting riding enthusiasts with safe and enjoyable trails and was actively involved in creating the Bloody Skillet connector trail, as well as the Cruise for a Cure ATV ride held in western Clinton County,” Hanna said. “I continue to support riding opportunities throughout the Commonwealth”. “We are about to present this map and let people see the potential,” Wykoff said.

Breezewood Proving Grounds

Spring Fling MX Race with TRUPA

This is the third year that Breezewood Proving Grounds has welcomed trikers to race at their track, and with every year it keeps getting bigger and bigger. More and more people are coming from farther away - Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and even Canada to name a few - to race their trikes there. The word is spreading fast about this MX track that is allowing trikes to race. At the April 11 Spring Fling Outlaw Race, 50 trikes lined up at the gates to mix it up in the dirt in six different classes. They ran in the 4 stroke class, 200 class, and a 350 4 stroke class. There was an open 2 stroke class with Tri-Zs, 250Rs, and Tecates, as well as a kids’ class with atc 70s. There was also an open money class with a big variety of different machines, including all the vintage trikes and the modern conversion trikes including JTS, Tionesta, and TPC trikes. For the people who are unfamiliar with the conversion trikes, they are newer 450 quads converted into three-wheelers with many trick parts. Another fun race was the hardtail/shaft drive class with many different machines like 250 sx and ytm 200 and 225 dx with the Honda hardtails in the mix. We even had an rm80 conversion trike show up and that thing that really hauls the mail.

He raced for team Honda on a beefed-up 200x in the ’80s when trikes were in their prime. It felt like a great privilege to race trikes at Breezewood and have him watch us race. You could feel the excitement and see the difference in the racers; they were fighting it out with increased passion and energy. Throughout the whole track, there were battles for position everywhere you looked, which caused the crowd to go wild. The trikes definitely put on a good show for the crowd, and for Mickey. This group of trike enthusiasts is easily getting their point across that the trikes did not die in the mid-80s with the ban on trikes. Having a legend like Mickey show up to watch these vintage and modern machines duke it out only helped to prove that point. The point being, there is a love for these machines by their riders. No matter what is said about them, the true outlaw racers are ... the trikes!! Trike on my friends!

Not only did we blow away our best showing so far with 50 trikes at the gates, but many trike nuts came just to be a part of the festivities at Breezewood for Spring Fling. They came to show off some of their show machines and hang out with some really great and fun people. The number of trikes that showed up was really something to see; it was like going back in time to the mid ’80s, when trikes were king of off-road racing. To top off what was an already incredible day, one of the trike racing legends from the ’80s, Mickey Dunlap, came out to support all the fellow trikers on race day.

ECEA Harescramble Season Is Off to a Great Start ECEA had its opening harescramble on March 28. The turnout for this event was incredible, bringing over 800 riders to hit the track over two days. The turnout was all the more incredible with the weather being cold, wet, and a little snowy on Saturday. Sunday brought pure sunshine. Even though it was cold, the riders where still eager to start off this year’s ECEA season. Saturday opened with the Fast Kidz. Despite the weather, the Fast Kidz were ready to ride. The opening race was the Peewees, with the overall win going to Kennito Held, who also nailed the first Cycle Playground Holeshot win for the 2015 season. In the next race, the holeshot went to Tim Scheiber in the 7-10 trail class, and the last race of the day the holeshot went to 12-15 85 Mikey Nerdlinger in the youth race. Cycle Playground is one of many ECEA sponsors who will be giving out holeshot awards to one line per race on Saturday and then one for the Main Event on Sunday for this ECEA 2015 race season, along with PG Graphics, which will do the holeshot for the C riders, our Sunday morning race. VeeRubber will be doing a Lucky 7 for the Fast Kidz, where seven different kids will get a tire. Also, there will be four tires given out to the adults on Sunday’s race. Our first Lucky 7 VeeRubber Fast Kidz winners were Isaac Wojick, Zachary Stanwood, Nate Smith, Mackenzy Robbins, Nathaniel Green, Gage Goralczyk and Abigail Appleby. Along with these great sponsors, Rec Rider and JHC Photography are pleased to announce for this season that we are searching for one ECEA Fast Kidz member who will be awarded with a Rec Rider trophy at the end-ofthe-year banquet. How does one qualify for this? You must first be chosen as a spotlight rider for inside an issue of Rec Rider. Then you will be entered into a pool for a chance to win the Rec Rider trophy. At each ECEA Fast Kidz race, there will be one child chosen by JHC

Photography, the ECEA photographer, as a spotlight Fast Kid and presented with a poster at the following race. Kicking off the spotlight for the 2015 season will be Kennito Held. He rides in the 7-8 50cc SR, and he has started this season off great, not only nailing the holeshot, but taking the overall win for the peewee class. Kennito has worked very hard this past winter and leading up to the first race of the season, with Dan Calhan MX, Motorama, and also some more riding time while on a trip to Florida on four different tracks. Kennito is a straight A student. As you can see, when someone works hard, there’s nothing they can’t do. I have seen Kennito grow over the past few years, and to see him come out on the track on the first race of the season and perform so well shows great initiative, and I feel he has earned that right to be in the spotlight. Congratulations, Kennito Held! Keep up the great work! Your ECEA Fast Kid can also earn the chance to be the next spotlight. Come out to the next ECEA harescramble, and I will be watching and listening. Your child just may be the one I spot to be the next spotlight. Flyers with more details will be available at the races to see just what it takes to qualify. Some other exciting news for some of the other ECEA Fast Kidz that we would also like to mention is that Joseph Rainone took the overall win for the Junior class. Taking the overall youth was Landon Bruner. Each and every one one of you Fast Kidz out there did an awesome job. Keep up the great work because, who knows, you just may be the next Rec Rider/ECEA Spotlight On Sunday morning, the turnout was incredible; the line going through for tech was amazing. The people who were in charge of sign-up and tech certainly had their work cut out for them. As I have already mentioned, over 800 riders between Saturday and Sunday’s event showed up. For the morning race, the top three overall winners were Kyle Mcdonal, Dane Schoeneburg, and Brian Searfoss, all of which had ridden in the sportman’s class. For the main event, our overall win went to Ryder Lafferty, second to William Shoeneburg, and third to John Kelley. The holeshot winners for the main event were Albert Demott, who was in A vet, Garry Willburn for PG Graphics, and the four VeeRubber winners, William Schoeburg, Kennith Godwin, Dillion Reccia, and Garry Willburn. This ECEA season is truly off to an exceptional start. Tri-County Sportman’s Club, who put together this event, along with the ECEA and all of their sponsors, did a superb job. Thank you to all the families, friends, and riders that came out for this event; this ECEA harescramble season is truly going to rock! So, grab your gear, load up your bike, and plan to join in on the next ECEA harescramble. For more information on these ECEA harescrambles and enduro events, visit ecea.org.

Trail Notes:

Good dirt bike maintenance is key to extending the life of your vehicle. Take preventative measures every time you prepare to ride and end a ride: check fluids, clean the bike, check control cables, etc.

Mud Pit The Making of a Dirt Bike Words by Stephanie Gehman

We're starting a new series of columns in which we will take a look at how dirt bikes and other off-roading vehicles are made. So, let's take a closer look at

The Elders at Miles Mountain

what goes into designing and building a dirt bike. Designed to be powerful and nimble, these machines are intended for a wide variety of uses, from touring and racing to mudding and playing. The majority of dirt bikes are equipped

with knobby or semi-knobby tires to encourage great traction and handling on just about any type of ground.

Wright Family Driving lessons

The wheels within the tires are typically 18” for the rear and 21” for the front.

To get those wheels moving, a dirt bike needs to have a good engine and a solid frame. Engines are measured in terms of cc's. The more cc's a dirt bike has, the more powerful the engine is. With regard to the frame of the bike, Wikipedia.

org notes, “Compared to road-going motorcycles, off-road machines are simpler and lighter, having long suspension travel, high ground clearance, and rugged construction with little bodywork and no fairings for less damage in spills.”

Dirt bikes, despite being dressed down as compared to street bikes, still entail

a great number of parts, including, but not limited to handle bars, spark plugs,

fuel tank, exhaust system, control cables, shocks, throttle and more. Take a look at the diagram we included with the column this month, and let us know if you have any questions about dirt bike parts and components.

If you do, feel free to send your questions to us via email or post them to our fan page, Facebook.com/RecRiderMag.

TPC Trikes

A Wicked Evolution

Part 2

Story By: Chas McHenry Bill Casey always believed that as long as there were going to be new quads and new bikes there would always be good technology to build a trike from. He put that theory to the test when he lost his 350X in a divorce. Bill had years of experience with modern and vintage dirt bikes; quads weren’t that hard to figure out compared to trikes, and he decided to ultimately build a trike out of the parts he knew were available. The project helped pass the time and gave him something to focus on. In 2002, he was running a construction company for his boss, Jeff, and getting by, when his boss decided he wanted to do something else. He had been following Bill’s project and decided to see if Bill wanted to partner on building them as a business instead of construction. Needless to say, this was a dream come true, and Bill and Jeff worked it out. Trike nuts go to extremes sometimes, and these guys definitely fit the bill. The first hurdle they had to cross was to pick apart the Consent Decree and the ATV Action Plan, a voluntary “ban” between five large manufacturers and the U.S. government to stop producing and selling three-wheelers in the United States. It took the lawyers some time, and, of course, plenty of money to find the loopholes and make sure that the partnership was safe to build the machines and sell them. Ultimately, they did their job and cleared the way for a seriously built modern machine that is almost without fail the envy of every trike nut who sees it. Without getting into specifics, TPC’s machines aren’t manufactured; they are kits used to convert a quad into a trike. That, along with other minutia and a couple big loopholes, has made it possible to build these machines for racing. With all the legalities out of the way, Bill took to making the machines and kits, and Jeff set about running the business. The partnership worked out well, and in 2009 they spent the better part of the year attending trike races all over the country. They went to dune runs, track and trial races, you name it. Anywhere Bill could get the machine into a race, he took it. He was open with his creation; the object was to collect as much feedback as possible and run the machine as hard as he could so any and all weak points and vulnerabilities were found and repaired. Anyone who wanted a chance to run the TPC was allowed to, and the response was almost always positive, with the common response being, “When can I get one?” At the 2009 Trike Rampage, the crowd his machine drew caused the media to pay attention, and once they reported on it, TPC was out there and very well received. In late 2009, they started production of the kits for sale in 2010, and “it just took on a life of its own.” Bill and his partner were blown away by the response, especially considering the cost of the machine in general. They were completely surprised that there were enough enthusiasts out there to order the $8,000 to $15,000 purpose-built machines in numbers high enough to create a waiting list. The first ten kits sold in three months’ time, and there were still another 15 to 20 people waiting for them. Orders for a second run of production were placed before the first five were out the door due to increasing demand. They were going to need help. Bill had met Kimmy Read at Trike Rampage, and shortly after she was introduced

to the product and got to know Bill and Jeff better, she joined the company as part owner. Kim brought years of trike riding and a new direction of passion to the company, along with capital to help move the brand along. It was the perfect timing to help keep things moving along as smoothly as possible considering the incredible growth of TPC at the time. Some time later in 2010, when Bill needed surgery, they hired Eric Jensen to race the TPC. He ran the entire 2010 series and was very successful; he won first place in five of eight races, second in two, and placed fifth in one race due a crash. He was riding the TPC when it had its worst crash to date; while attempting a 70-foot uphill at Malvern, the bike flipped end over end multiple times. Everyone expected to see a torn up and battered machine in the pits. In reality, the bike wasn’t broken at all; it needed some tweaking, but he went on to race and win both his motos later the same day. In late 2010, Jeff, Bill’s business partner and former boss, decided to leave the company to pursue other passions and spend more time with family. Jeff’s leaving left a hole in the business and added stress to Bill and Kimmy’s work days. The added workload created a temporary slowdown in the business while they sorted it out and came up with a new plan to carry on. It took them almost a year to get things back to normal, and all along the way TPC kept producing winning trikes for people to race, sometimes ahead of schedule and sometimes behind schedule but always plugging along. Sales continued to remain consistent, and due to the performance, customers had no problem waiting for the TPC to be delivered, other than the excitement of getting one. In 2012, TPC went to Ashtabula Racetrack in Ashtabula, Ohio, and had Jackie Meadows race their 450R conversion. For those who don’t know, Jackie Meadows is an extremely talented and winning racer. He was a Team Green racer at age 16 running a Tecate 4, and he just kept getting better. For him to come out of retirement to race a conversion trike was a move that made the whole industry stand up and take notice. When they did, all they saw was the trike racing world. It pretty much put trike racing on the map as something to be taken seriously. This is something all passionate trike riders already knew; we were just waiting for the rest of you to get it. Got it? Good. Jackie had been sent a TPC practice bike four months before the race and had run it so much that it was just easier to build him a new one in the pits right before the race than it was to rebuild the one he had logged so many hours practicing on. Jackie said he put the practice bike through the equivalent of two motos a day for four months and was impressed with the way it handled the abuse. He was even more impressed with the fact that although he nearly rode the wheels off the practice bike, he was still satisfied with its performance. When he got on the bike for the race, it had been set up with a worked motor and lowered suspension for that track although everything else was exactly the same as the practice bike. He said he was even more impressed with it. Not only did Jackie win the race, he left the rest of the field completely alone, competing with times that would have put him in the top five had he been racing the Pro Quad class. Up until this event, it was always presumed that trikes could never compete with the quick times quads were able to achieve. Jackie’s lap times proved that not only could they compete, they were able to run for the top spots as well, and that sent a shockwave through the racing world. In the next article, we will get into the future of TPC--the new builds, the expansion of trike racing, TPC products and their facility.

PaTRA

Dual Sport 2015 By: Steve Bottiger

Last year’s two-day 20th Anniversary Dual Sport Event put on by PaTRA was an epic event to say the least. In addition to perfect weather, it included a Saturday “Iron Man” 100+ mile route, which was a combination of State Forest trails and local paved roads connecting to a very nice five-mile tight enduro trail system on private property. Saturday morning also found the riders doing a 20-mile trail only section on the Shade Mountain State Forest OHM trail. After the noon snack break on Shade, a more leisurely pace found the riders back on the east end of the Seven Mountains roads and trails system. It was not an easy ride, especially if you took the two options on Shade Mountain. The Sunday, injury-free ride was an easy 100-mile trail ride compared to the Saturday route. Overall, the close to 300 riders were very excited about the new ride format and the new starting point at the West End Fairgrounds at Laurelton. This is a central location to the various loops that are available to PaTRA for this annual event. For this year’s 21st annual Seven Mountains Dual Sport event, PaTRA has a one-day ride featuring a different loop planned to start at the Laurelton/East End Fairgrounds on June 21. This year, that falls on Father’s Day, which was the only open date on the ECEA calendar. It will include mostly dirt roads, drivable trails, snowmobile trail and single track. Very little paved road will be used. There will be a snack stop and gas stop at about the 50-mile marker. As always, a breakdown truck will be at the snack stop along with emergency phone communications back to the campgrounds. This ride will feature a lot of new areas from previous rides, and, by popular demand, the chicken barbecue will again be put on by the Glen Iron Fireman’s Social Hall. However, the after-event Sunday BBQ will be served up at the fairgrounds. This year’s event is being managed by the husband/wife team of Ed and Connie Rachau. In years past, it was managed by Tony Zaccaria, who has moved south to Kentucky in a new job there. This is an all weather event, rain or shine. In 20 years, we never had a rained-on ride, so let’s make that 21.

March 28 and 29 were the dates for Round 1 of the 2015 AWRCS series. The race was held in Parker, Pa. Even though the weather was frigid, with the temperatures in the low teens at night and the high on Saturday 26 and Sunday around 40 degrees, we had a record number of riders participating. There were 96 new riders that registered in Round 1, and all of the current members would like to welcome you to the family! Saturday morning started out with the peewee quads. These little ones were troopers, never giving up as they raced on the frozen terrain. Tommy Luffey took first place in the 50cc (4-6) class. Justice Schmeider took first in the 70cc (10 & under) class. In the 125cc / 90cc (10 & under) class, Haley Edwards took the win. Emmaleigh Rupp got the win for the 125cc / 90 cc (10 & under) modified class. The ground had started thawing out just a bit to create a little mud action for the youth quad race. The 90cc (9-12) class winner was Zachary Kerns. Tory Thomas took the win for the 90cc (13-15) class. The 250cc beginner (12-15) winner was Andrew Banovsky. In the youth quad hybrid/300 ex class, Brandy Deninno took first place. The ground had pretty much thawed in time for the adult quad race, providing them with a variety of track conditions. Most had gotten very muddy, and it was cold enough out that they had frozen mud clumps stuck to their racing gear and quads.

Rick Stair took the win for the Pro class and was the overall winner for Round 1. This round was also a UTV race, with #591 Offroadmotorsports Wicked Bilt taking the overall win. On Sunday were the bike races. The peewee racers braved the cold, slippery conditions and gave it their all. The 50cc (4-6) class winner was Gage Clayton. The 50cc (7-10) first-place winner was Alex Leavitt. In the 65cc (7-10) class, Ryan Alston took the win. Next up was the youth class. Logan McClafferty took the win in the 65cc (10-13) class. The 80cc (10-12) class winner was Shawn Myers. Hunter Riemer came in first place in the 80cc (13-15) class. The youth bike women class winner was Payton Patterson. There was a huge turnout for the adult bike racers! They had all types of different track conditions, making for a very interesting race. Brett Zofchak took the win in the pro-class and the overall win. A giant thank-you goes out to Steve and Amy Stiller, who provide us with such great races! Thank you to all the track officials and volunteers who help make this series such a huge success! A special thank-you goes out to Kiersten Scholl of “502 Photoz” for the great peewee, youth, adult quads and the UTV picture submissions!
