REC RIDER MAGAZINE
Letter from the Editor Rec Rider has a pink cover! Yes, it does. And you’ll find some pink headers throughout, as well. Each one has a story about the off-road community and its help to fund the fight for a cure for cancer. We all know someone affected by this disease. It comes out of hiding at any given time, on any given person, and it wreaks utter havoc on them. Technology, research, patience, and brilliance have all made many cancers easier to detect, diagnose, and cure. But not all of them. There are still many cancers that are just too fierce to stop. That said, not too long ago, in my lifetime and many of yours, almost all cancer was on the winning end of the odds, but now many are treatable and curable. Slowly, the tables seem to be turning. So this issue is dedicated to all those who fight the fight, help raise money, hold the hands of patients, and love the people who have been hit by cancer, and, not to be forgotten, the survivors and the ones we lost, too. It’s also to show the spirit of our sport, how we take care of each other on and off the trails. To show that anyone who wants to can help make a difference. I’ve had people say that raising $3,000 is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to research. So I answered, “Well, then, we need more places for the drops to come from.” I checked around on the Internet, and all over the country there are literally thousands of events - more than that, actually; I had to stop counting because of dinner and back-to-school night. But think of it, our drop, plus the thousands of other drops, make a pretty good splash. And that’s just ATVers, so add Jeeps, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and even those healthy people who exercise and stuff - we can include them - they do their bit on trails sometimes too. Cancer is a real………well, you know what it is. In here this month we have some great stories of rides and events that are helping to fund a cure, we have race coverage, we have all kinds of things. I hope you enjoy the slight departure from the norm, and if you were at any of the events, give yourself a pat on the back; you helped. On to the October issue. Keep supporting the benefit rides; every little bit does truly help. See you on the trails!

Renovo Cruise for a Cure From a Different Point of View By Linda McHenry
Purple flags were everywhere
In line and waiting to go Barely awake, I heard four-wheelers. “Somebody tell them to be quiet,” I thought. “I am so tired.” My daughter and I had driven more than five and a half hours through the night to arrive in Renovo at about 3 a.m. I looked at the clock. 7 a.m. Ugh! “Grumpy” was an understatement. I turned to my husband and asked him what time we had to get up. He said, “Soon.” Ugh! I looked out the window, and instead of crickets and quiet, there was the rumbling of engines, laughter, and so much activity. When we had arrived earlier that morning, it was so dark I didn’t even realize there were more RVs near us. Now I noticed that there were hundreds of people moving around outside my window. As I stepped outside, I realized that the peaceful campsite I had pulled into this morning had been transformed into the heart of Renovo’s Ride for a Cure. Tents had been erected, vendors were setting up their merchandise, and CMATVA members were everywhere directing riders to the correct places and groups. We were in group two. People started coming up to me, introducing themselves and scurrying around. It all seemed quite overwhelming to me; however, it was running like a well-oiled machine. My husband and I walked over to the registration tent and were handed a small Ziploc bag. He opened it and handed me two rolled-up purple flags. I unrolled them and – boom - I was struck with emotion. Tears began pouring out of my eyes. Printed on the flags were the words “Riding In Memory Of” with my mother’s name on one and my father’s name on the other. My husband then showed me his flag, which included the words “Riding In Honor
Of” with his mother’s
At 3 a.m., this was name. I was crying. He empty, but by 7, it explained to me that was bustling
for a $1 donation, you could have your loved one’s name put on the flags. I began to look around. On every ATV there were flags. Purple flags everywhere. Some ATVs were adorned with one, and some were covered with these small tokens of love. That was the moment I realized why we were all here. I knew I was coming to a ride for a cure; I just was not at all prepared for the visual realization. After I pulled myself together, we mounted our vehicles and headed to our group for some instruction. Once we were all ready, our ride began. We pulled out of the home base and instead of heading toward the trails, we banged a left and headed straight down the road toward town. “Um, I think we are going the wrong way,” I thought. Then, for the second time of the morning, the tears hit me. As we crossed the bridge, I looked to the left and there were Renovo locals standing on the side of the road with signs, waving and cheering. We continued down the road into town traveling alongside the railroad tracks. Boom, more tears. To my left, the townspeople had strung purple ribbon along the side of the road. It bordered the road like a fence line, and at every post there was a sign memorializing a loved one. Sign after sign. The ribbon went on and on. I hate cancer! We traveled around the backside and then directly through the center of town. On Main Street, there was purple everywhere. Businesses had painted their windows and put out signs. Homeowners had put ribbons on their lawns and trees. Local residents were lining the streets, waving to us and cheering, holding signs and yelling their thanks. We exited town and headed for the trails. The ride was beautiful. CMATV has put so

much effort into this event, and all I can say is thank you. The trails were amazing. There were climbs and smooth trails and bumps and, of course, my favorite: puddles. The views were fantastic. I have never been on such a well-thought-out ride. We stopped for breaks (not too often), and they had arranged for portable toilets at each stop. We stopped for a quick barbecue for lunch. Along the way, we would pass a driveway or house hidden in the middle of nowhere and, yes, you guessed it, the homeowners would be sitting at the end of their property waving and thanking us. When we arrived back at home base, waiting for us was a home-style chicken barbecue with all the fixins’ thanks to the Women’s Rotary Club. I may have woken up grumpy and tired. But when all was said and done, my heart was so full of love, loss, and renewed hope that soon we will no longer be riding for a cure but riding in celebration of a cure being found.

What a great way to wrap up the ending of the racing season! While there are still some races left, it is quickly coming to an end. I got to spend my weekend at one of the most notorious races of the year. The Line Mountain 4wd track is known for its tough obstacle course, but the 7-miler is in a whole different ballpark. This race brings racers from neighboring states to go up against the best to see who will become the new winner of the season. Not only do the racers drive this distance but so do the fans. I talked to people from New Jersey, Long Island, Delaware, and Maryland - who came all that way just for this race in particular. There were 129 racers and more ATVs, dirtbikes, and UTVs then ever. The event is a continually growing race, and each year still teaches the veterans a thing or two. More than one person lost parts and pieces of their racers during the race. One unfortunate buggy caught fire, but thankfully, the driver was okay. This race is almost ten miles through the hardest terrain around. It’s amazing that people even finish this race at all. The racers are given four hours to complete their laps, and the best times result in the winner. To all the racers that brave this track, I commend you, because I can only imagine the pain you might be feeling the next day after you come off a race like that. This race was also bittersweet for me because I’m glad to see all the racers and to have a great weekend but it saddens me that I won’t see the racers again until the start of the next season. So if you’re looking for a tough track to test your skills or just for a nice family race day, come check out Line Mountain 4wd track next race season. Congrats to all the racers - you have a tough winter of repair ahead of you, but I can’t wait to see you all next year!

Boyseson 2014 2-Stroke Shootout Photos and story by John Sherer
Are we headed back to the days when 2-strokes reigned? Well, maybe not, but how about three days full of only 2-stroke motorcycle racing and action? On Sept. 12 through 14, Sleepy Hollow MX Park hosted the fourth annual Boyeson 2-stroke Shootout. This event has grown from a few old beat-up bikes guys had stored in mothballs or covered up in a corner of a garage for decades to an event featuring top-tier MX machines and drawing riders from several states. This year featured a new track layout. Track preparations started several weeks prior to the event, with many volunteers dedicating themselves and a lot of their time to making the transition. Their hard work paid off, and the final result was welcomed in the pits. All the riders I had a chance to talk to gave the layout a thumbs-up, boasting the track was much faster and more fluid with deep biting traction. The three-day event was broken down into an all-day Friday practice schedule for all classes. Afterward, special quest speaker Harold Glissen gave an inspirational speech about his unique journey in racing. If you’re unaware of who Harold is, Google him and you will be shocked and surprised. Saturday’s racing schedule saw all classes running except the Pro ranks. The weather was less than desirable for most of the day, but the racing surface held its integrity, and shortly after the final moto the skies opened up, leaving the track too muddy for what was to be a best scrub, bestsounding and best-smelling 2-stroke contest. Sunday was a new day. A bit of fog lingering over the hollow lifted as the sunshine broke through the clouds. At first light the track crew raked and groomed the surface to near perfection and the practice rounds started shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday’s featured racing was 50cc 4-8 open, showcasing rider #277 Mason Tucker, a team Cobra rider winning the class. Mason’s riding has earned him a trip to Australia to compete in an international competition. The biggest draw for the spectators was the 2 – 250 Open Pro-Motos and the 2- 125-144cc Open Pro Motos. These were 20-minute motos, plus two laps with a money purse of $7,000 on the line. Riders in the event included James Decotis from Massachusetts, Dakota Kessler from New Jersey, Michael McDade from Ohio, Seth Rarick from New York, and Pennsylvania riders Ty Newcome and Robert Piazza Jr. from Easton, along with Casey Clark and Schae Thomas, to mention a few.
When the gate dropped on the 250 open, pro riders charged into turn 1 with a clean start. The racing was close and tight, and Robert Piazza #627 took his Suzuki to a second-place finish in Moto 1 behind Michael McDade #200 and a first-place finish in Moto 2 for an overall win in the class. Second place went to Seth M. Rarick #38, and third place was filled by James Decotis #774. A Rider’s Cancer-versary By Helen Parkins
As I sit here thinking about my sixyear “cancer-versary,” I am blessed to say the Lord is guiding me through spreading awareness through activities my family enjoys together. My husband and kids surprised me last month with a custom pinked-out RZR they built and designed. After all these years, the tears and emotions still surface. I felt tears roll that I didn’t know I had. We love the outdoors, and we have a passion for riding ATVs and motorcycles. Having been through breast cancer brings blessings in addition to the trials. One blessing is a greater appreciation for the simplest things in life. A simple campfire, a day on the trails, a picnic lunch, and seeing the mountainside only add to the serenity of moments we enjoy with our family and friends. I am forever grateful with each poker run, fundraiser, or awareness event we attend that helps raise awareness. As the ATV industry becomes more popular and more trails open, it permits for more events, more awareness, and fundraising for all types of diseases and nonprofit organizations. This year, our friends Chris and Becky took their daughter Chloe (age 9) on her very first fundraising ride, which was the fourth annual Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure on June 7. It was a 45-mile scenic ride to honor survivors and those who have lost their battles while raising money to research a cure for cancer. The ride started with a parade through town as people waved, homes were decorated, and signs lined the streets with names of people who have had cancer. Many spectators cheered on the
riders, clapped, and took pictures. The ride then continued through the mountains between the Susquehanna River and Kettle Creek, with lunch provided by Boy Scouts at a local campground. The ride netted over $5,000 and was extremely touching and emotional to our friends as they shared the events of the day with us. It’s wonderful to see a community come together to raise money while doing something we love. I can see now how becoming a survivor has taught me compassion, patience, acceptance, strength, and so much more than words could ever describe. The lessons I’ve learned and implemented have healed my body, healed my mind, and made me a better person, friend, wife, daughter, mother, and resident of this planet. It’s my wish that “cancer” is no longer a terrifying word and no longer considered a death sentence. Any hobby that can bring together lots of people with a combined passion can promote amazing opportunities in our communities. An amazing friend taught me life is about “collecting memories, not things.” Every time I get in my pink RZR I am reminded how truly blessed and thankful I am for this time of my life. Mud Pit Cold Weather Gear Guide By: Stephanie Gehman Summer’s officially over and the colder weather is on its way. But colder weather doesn’t mean the end of riding and off roading. In fact, fall and winter are great times of year to ride! Riding in the chillier months, however, means you need to protect not only your machine and equipment from the elements but yourself, too. There’s not much worse than going out for a ride, only to realize you didn’t dress warm enough to enjoy the experience.
Riders, including (from fron t, left) Paige, Madi, Chloe, and Tierra at Mountain Top Cam p in Centre County, PA
Let’s take a look at what layers and protective gear riders should wear to make sure cold weather rides are as awesome as possible. First, let’s start with your first layer – a set of long underwear. These are designed to not only keep you toasty, but to wick away sweat moisture as well. Over your long underwear put on a looser fitting but not bulky warmth layer that is also sweat wicking. Over that layer it’s recommended to wear a breathable and water resistant outer layer. Gore-tex is a great example of this, but anything similar will do the job nicely. Especially think about an outer layer of pants and jacket that will block the wind but also have zipper venting to help you cool down if you do get too over heated. So, we’ve talked about what to put on your body, next let’s chat about what to put on your feet. Keep your toes warm in a pair of wool socks and then tuck feet into some comfortable, insulated boots. Your hands, like your toes, need some love, too. Ask your parents to help you find a not-too-bulky pair of gloves that is waterproof and permits your fingers the freedom to operate the controls of your equipment easily.
his mom at Andy Hovis and of Rd 9 AWRCS e lin g tin ar the st
For your head and face, think about investing in what’s called a balaclava. It covers your head and neck comfortably and closely in one convenient piece of material, and they often come in sweat-wicking models to keep you both warm and dry. If you don’t have a balaclava, a lightweight beanie and scarf combination can accomplish the same effect. Make sure it’s thin material so your helmet isn’t too tight. Don’t forget to pair head and neck coverage with goggles and a breath mask to protect your eyes, nose and mouth from the elements as well. Of course, in any season, make sure you’re wearing your personal protective equipment, too! Be safe and enjoy the cooler weather! Got an idea for this column? Working Together By Denny Mann
Obituary for Someone Else Our group was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Someone Else. Someone’s passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years. Someone did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, One’s name was on everyone’s lip:, “Let Someone Else do it.” Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results. “Someone Else can work with that group.” It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most generous givers in our group. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference. Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things that Someone Else did? I have been involved with PaOHV since day one, and the accomplishments of the organization have been many in spite of so few pulling the load. Just think how much can be done with each of us giving back to the sport we love. We can focus on landowner liability issues, create more riding areas, and obtain less-restrictive township ordinances. Although I am not Someone Else, my garage is full of toys for dirt, water, snow, and pavement, and I expect to use them all until I die. Someone Else may rest because I am very protective of my toys and the right to use them. So please join me and bring along your friends while we make PaOHV the organization of power and commitment.
S859946
The OHV user group has been under fire from many fronts, and we as a PaOHV membership must come together and confront each issue one at a time. In the past 10, years we have seen one township after another enacting ordinances to prevent individual landowners from riding on his or her own property. As the areas of legitimate riding opportunities continue to shrink, the OHV user group must become a unified voice in Harrisburg. As a result of Pennsylvania Act 68, PaOHV is the sole recognized voice representing OHV-related issues in the state legislature. Unfortunately, many OHV users see the present process as a waste of time and of little benefit. Until PaOHV has the backing of all ATV and dirt bike owners, the opposition will remain in control. The first order of business is for the OHV user group to get along. We must put aside our prejudices toward each other. It is human nature to shun individuals who we do not understand even though we may be so much alike. This is so true not only of the ATV-verses-dirt bike issue but also of other outdoor recreational user groups. Aren’t we all interested in fresh air, clean water, and solitude? Consider how many different recreational activities are performed on pneumatic tires, require a sense of balance, and use a vehicle to go where few have gone while giving the thrill of speed and motion. As an OHV user group, we must put away the stereotypes and make an effort to learn more about the other side of the PaOHV membership if we are to stop the divide and conquer the game plan that our opponents have used so successfully in the past. I do not care if you ride an ATV or dirt bike; we need to work together and get all of our friends to join us in protecting our rights to recreate on an OHV. Then when we go to Harrisburg we can honestly say, “PaOHV is the voice of 500,000 strong.” I recently read the following Internet post by Matt Biedka and would like to share the story of “Someone Else”

It has two breakers on the hill with a 70 degree incline to the first breaker, a 60 degree incline to the second breaker and back to 70 degree for the rest of the hill with the lights at 190 feet up the hill. This is a great event for families with bikes, trikes, and quads. All are welcome to compete and watch. This is an awesome event for spectators to come check out also. The classes include from youth, stock, ATV, modified, open, senior, snowmobile, Hitting the first breaker and exhibition. So if you feel you have the skills to climb, come join the people at Beaverdale hillclimb. If you are out and about and looking for some great entertainment for the day, come cheer on the climbers like Dan Kusick #351, who climbed the hill on his CR500 in the senior class. He made the hill at times as fast as 5.96 seconds, which secured first place for him at the previous hillclimb on July 13. In the ATV class #4 266 and up two stroke class, Eric Dumm #314 logged his best time of the day, 5.979 seconds, locking down first place for that class. Then came the guy who people love to come see climb the hill, Dave Swinger #520, on a vintage 1986 Honda ATC 250R trike. He logged a time of 8.33. Dave Swinger pushing it This hillclimb event is a fun and very exciting event to get the crew together and spend a day out. These are cash payout outlaw events. If you are looking to get into hillclimbing, this is the place to come. We love showing people what we do and helping them do what they do even better. We would love to see you there. The state championships are on Sunday, Oct. 5. The address for the hillclimb is 630 Cedar Blvd., Beaverdale, PA 15921.
Ready for action
Breezewood Proving Grounds is making dreams come true for the trikes David Swinger III by allowing us to race at some of their Outlaw races. throttling the To the spectators’ amazement, the trikes are filling the gates for the races as well, with a little help from a local trike straightaway group called TRUPA (Trike Riders United based in Pennsylvania). It is truly awesome seeing a track set aside old thoughts and welcoming the Nathan Offman trikes like Breezewood does. So if we haven’t shows off his said it enough already: first-place award. Thank you, Breezewood! For the Aug. 2 outlaw race at Breezewood, there were four classes of trikes: Two Stroke Trike class, Four Stroke Trike class, Kids’ Trike class, and an Open Money Trike class. And if this isn’t enough, there is talk of more classes for next year due to the high turnout of racers at these events. For trike riders who want to race, this is the best news we could get. Running a Kids’ Class was completely new to the mix, and it was amazing watching the kids racing on their trikes. There were two boys who stole the show on the 70s: one was Nathan Offman and the other was David Swinger III, both on modified 70s. Nathan took first, and David took second. The two boys went out on the track with the Kids’ Quad class and confidently stayed right in the mix with all the modern machines the entire race. It was definitely a proud moment to see these old vintage machines, with young riders, keeping up with modern equipment. As a result, we are pleased to announce that the Kids’ Trike class will be available for future races at Breezewood Proving Grounds and is expected to get bigger as time goes on. And on a similar note, we are very proud to announce that with the growing number of trikers coming out to these races, the Four Stroke class will now be split up into two separate classes to even the playing field out a little bit. One will be a 200 class, and the other will be a 350X class. We want to invite and will gladly welcome any and all new trike riders to come join us. Please look on Facebook for TRUPA or look up the dates on the Breezewood Proving Grounds website at HYPERLINK "http://www.BreezewoodProvingGrounds.com" www.BreezewoodProvingGrounds.com and come out to have some fun and get in on the action. If you don’t have any experience, get in touch with us and let us know; we would love the opportunity to help get you up to speed! Until next time…….. GO RIDE YOUR TRIKE!!!! The top four places for racing classes were as follows: Two Stroke Class: First place: Bryan Ditch #97 on a 250R Second place: Lyle Offman #64 on a 250R Third place: Dave Swinger #520 on a 250R Fourth place: Allan Pack #30 on a Tri-Z Four Stroke Class: The Two Stroke First place: Sean Ridgway #314 on a 350X class vying for Second place: Lee Marker #5 on a 350X a spot Third place: Dave Ridgway #131 on a 350X Fourth place: Josh Gettemy #819 on a 350X Open Money Class: Trike racing is just so First Place: Lee Marker #5 on a 350X awesome. ECEA Hurricane Harescramble Hosted By Meteor Motorcycle Club Photos & Story By Joanne Hauser
Meteor Motorcycle Club of Southern New Jersey hosted Hurricane Hills Hare Scramble, which took place outside of New Jersey Hurricane Hills MX Park, Pa. This was not an easy event to put on, considering the Tegan Tempale going club is from New Jersey, so a truly special into the turn in second, thanks needs to go out to Meteor Motorcycle but prevails 1st place overall Club, the members, the owners of the MX Park, and all involved in making this event happen. Meteor Motorcycle Club has been around promoting events since 1930, but this was the first hare scramble that the club has been able to put together in several years. I have to say they did an incredible job. It’s hard enough putting on event in your own state, but going out of state is even harder. It takes a lot of time and manpower to do this, and Meteor did it! Vendors were set up on Saturday and Sunday, along with Samantha Bird (N.A.S.M. certified personal trainer) to show the young Fast Kids stretches to do before they raced. This was a two-day event. On Saturday, it was raining, which made the track and trails very slick, but that did not stop the Fast Kids from overcoming all the conditions that they where given. First-time rider, 7-year-old AJ Halford of Minersville, Pa., was one of the Fast Kids who gave it a go. His mother, Kelly Halford, said, “He only made it a lap and a half ... then quit, saying his stomach hurt, but he did go back in and finish.” Even a first-time rider wouldn’t let the conditions stop him. He just wanted to get back out there and ride the great track. Finishers in the 50cc class included Nathan Dunley in first, Jaden Palmer in second, and Kyle Greenwicz in third. In the Pee-Wee class, it was Max Fernandez in first, Joseph

Scotto in second, and Dylan Hicks in third. The top five overall for the main youth event on Saturday were Kyle Tino in first, Jack Ross in second, Hunter Harbs in third, Dalton Bloom in fourth, and Michael Beeler in fifth. On Sunday, which was the main race day for adults, there were super weather conditions, and the track and trails were able to dry up pretty nicely, making it a great day of racing for both events. First to hit the track were the morning racers, with the overall win and top five win going to Dylan Delisi, Jack Ross, Dalton Bloom, Ronald Moore, and Andrew Kata. Top finishers in the women’s class were Megan Horseman in first, Patricia Blair in second, and Shyann Phelps in third. After the morning race, the main event was up, with the winner of the whole shot prize for that race going to Ronald Decaro. Tagan Robert Temple came in first place, with Kyle Mcdonal in second, and William Schoeneberg in third. Schoeneberg said to me after the race, “The trails were really fun. I liked the fast flowing parts and enjoyed the more technical sections. I actually was looking forward to each lap every time I went around.” With that being said, this hare scramble was certainly one of the best for the year. The club put so much time and effort into making this event happen for the ECEA, the Fast Kids, and the Sunday Racers that we all want to thank you very much. To all the sponsors also, for their support, altogether these races would not be happening if it Jeff wasn’t for everyone involved. Pasqual, second Nathan Dunley, Thank you to everyone involved!

August 24, 2014
Our Aug. 24 hare scramble, “Down by the River,” went off without a hitch. Well…sort of. Mother Nature wanted to have her say. After having to postpone our spring event due to the low lying areas and the parking area being under water, our biggest concern during our preparations for this event, ironically, was the dust. On Thursday, Aug. 21, we were “Down by the River” laying out an awesome 6.3-mile course and working on ways to try to keep the dust down. Then Mother Nature laughed at us, and a small squall came through. It dropped a little rain, but the wind that was with that squall knocked a tree down, and it fell right on our sign-up tent. After the chain saws did some quick cleanup, everyone went home for the night hoping for a few showers and no more wind. The rain started early Friday morning and stayed until Saturday afternoon. With most of the course already laid out, changing the course was not an option. After I ran a mileage check, the ground seemed hard enough that once the standing water was blown out, we might be OK. In some spots that was true, but in others it was just muddy. Although the weather toyed with us, we still had some great racing. There were a little more than 30 youth and peewees entered; we assume this was due to the rain. Then we had 139 brave motorsport enthusiasts who entered in an adult bike class, and wow, did they throw some mud! There were 19 riders who left the gate and never saw the scoring tent. That just goes to show you what the rain had done to the course.
Goose it!
Another dry spot, and a nice lap
LOOK! A dry spot!
You can almost hear the tires splashing through that mud. Jesse Groemm had fast lap of the bikes with a 15:49. This was his last lap and I know we had to do a little re-routing by this time so that might have helped a little. He did put down a 16:03 and a 16:11, however, flying through the mud and taking the overall victory. A strong second was Tegan Robert Temple, and Craig Delong rounded out the podium. Jarod Stoner came in fourth. Some club notables are Jared Dzugan and Joshua Mitkowski, who both completed six full laps, just one behind the overall winner. Liz Mulhern completed a full four laps in the women’s class. Great job, guys and girl! After some track cleanup, the 77 quad entries were overly excited to go. Again, with the conditions we had, 15 quads did not make it around the course to the scoring tent. Chris Borich had the fastest lap of the day, running the course with a 15:03 and a 15:07, which helped him take the quad overall victory. Jarod McClure ran second, only 1:17 behind Borich, and Randy Hamilton rounded out the podium. Steven Stracka finished a close fourth. It was not much of a surprise that the quads ran faster laps than the bikes in these conditions. For class winners and entries of the entire District 6 Hare Sacrambles Series, you can go to the AMA D-6 Hare Scramble website, http://www.moto-tally.com/D6/HS/Results.aspx. The Back Mountain Enduro Riders would like to thank everyone who came out and raced, watched, and helped. Without all of you, these events would not be possible. As Always, Ride Safe and Ride Hard!

Tug Hill ATV Expo As in years past it’s always the same start to our ATV EXPO - with a late Friday night getting the campers in and settled and an early Saturday morning lining up the dealers in their designated spots. Dealers really get to show off their latest models of ATVs and UTVs as space is not an issue at Flat Rock Inn, and dealers are given plenty of space. Each year we try to add a new activity to our ATV EXPO, and I believe this year it was a home run. We had the ATV Safety Institute bring their ATV Safety Course to Flat Rock Inn. It provided a great opportunity for folks to stand around and observe the intense training participating children went through. The instructor was David Beyer of Watertown, N.Y., and he travels all over the states teaching different types of wheeled safety training. With the rainy conditions, the kids really worked for their certificates, and at the completion of their training they were all treated to a hot lunch provided by the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association. The ATV Teeter Totter still hasn't been beat
We also added an additional event for the 2014 ATV EXPO and that was the log pull, which is a 5-foot-long log on a 10-foot piece of rope that is pulled behind an ATV. The object is to drive in and out of the obstacles without hitting one of the 14 plastic barrels. To give the log a little more roll we added a swivel at the head of it to create a little more challenge. With the rain on Saturday but a sunny Sunday, folks started to show their heads and take part in the ATV EXPO. As in the past, the big part of the ATV EXPO was the obstacle course. The rain made plenty of mud for the 470-foot mud pit, and once a rider went through, they just had to go through for a second or third time! The big winner this time around was the ATV Teeter Totter as no one was able to balance on it for 5 seconds to take home a new ATV helmet. All in all it was a great weekend, and we want to thank all the vendors, spectators and participants for their time and help. Without them we’d just be a bunch of guys in a field. See you next year!

Fourth Annual Bras for a Cause Ride Report by Allison Gorczyk
Lost Trails ATV Adventure Park – Dunmore, Pa. Well over 200 participants attended the Fourth Annual Bras for a Cause, which took place on Sunday, Sept. 14. With a great day, we were able to raise a grand total of more than $3,500 for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). “The support of grassroots partners like Bras for a Cause is crucial to the success of the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.,” said Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC’s president and founder. “Their contributors not only allow us to sustain our programs and services for survivors, (but) they also expand our reach and spread the message of breast cancer awareness and education to audiences that we would never reach without their partnership.” Halpin-Murphy continued, “We are honored to work with Allison and everyone at the Lost Trails ATV Park in our united mission to find a cure for breast cancer NOW… so our daughters won’t have to.”
The events included finding hidden bras in the woods and when participants brought them back to the check-in area, they were able to claim one of the four main prizes. The first person won a 32-inch television. The second person won a GoPro helmet cam. The third person won riding gear, and the fourth person won a year pass to ride at the Lost Trails! The Lost Trails includes over 2,000 acres of property with a large variety of terrain to explore and everything from wet and muddy trials to boulder crawls and scenic trails twisting through the wooded mountainside. Plus, all of this is amid some breathtaking vistas. Most importantly, we would like to thank all of our Platinum sponsors who helped to make this event a success, as well as our volunteers from Valley ATV Club. If this event sounds like something you would like to attend, please mark your calendar for the Fifth Annual Bras for a Cause next year on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015.

Scrubgrass OHV Park’s First Annual Power Wheels Race Photo & Story By Jim & Megan Combs The first annual power wheels race was held at Scrubgrass OHV park in Templeton, Pa., on August 31. The race started at approximately 4 p.m. at the Labor Day open ride. A surprising number of racers showed up to compete. They raced two at a time, side by side, and the winner of each round went on to the next race. The winners of those races went on to the final race. The winner had the choice of a $150 cash prize or a set of goggles with a built-in video camera. The second-place winner received the other prize. Spectators had a fun time laughing at the crashed power wheels riders as they tumbled down the hill and crashed into each other numerous times. Join us for the second annual race, which will be held Labor Day weekend of 2015.

Ask The Zone By The ATV Zone.com
The Zone is back again. We took a hiatus this summer to try to do some other things, but we are back for a winter of Q and A with our favorite magazine! As usual, here’s the disclaimer: We aren’t scientists or gurus, but we are people who have been riding for most of our lives and have probably tried every way of doing things, from OK, there is definitely more to it than that. That means that local townships the ridiculous to the incredibly stupid, and we hope our painful and sometimes have to be on board, and the best way to find out is to call your township. This hysterically funny experiences will help you avoid some of the most common is a state law listed here and is subject to being changed by local ordinance. But mistakes out there. Here are our rules: it’s a great start. There is no substitute for getting information firsthand from the horse’s head. How many times have you said, or heard, “Just go run it anyway. It’s not The only question that cant be answered is the one that was never asked, even like they are going to catch you in this snow”? if the answer is that you don’t know…………..yet. Jimmy R. from Chalfont asked: Is it really legal to ride ATVs on the road if it snows? This is a GREAT question! Thanks, Jimmy, you’re a great kid! Here is the answer for Pennsylvania:
When I was younger, I ran like that. That was also many moons ago, and there was about one-fifth of the population around my home that there is now. Also, litigation was less prevalent, so things were entirely looser. Now, those attitudes are gone, the tone of things is vastly different, and you have to have your A game on if you’re going to do things. These days, you stand a pretty good chance at paying fines, losing insurance, and possibly losing your machine. It’s a big gamble seeing that the knowledge of PA’s law is right here on this page and a five-minute phone call referencing it can give you all the answers you need.

ECEA Beehive Enduro Hosted By Competition Dirt Riders Photos & Story By Joanne Hauser
Competition Dirt Riders (CDR) is an off-road motorcycle club located in southern New Jersey. The club hosts two ECEA/AMA sanctioned events a year, Ormond Farms Hare Scramble and Beehive Enduro. Roughly 250 riders came out to buzz around NJ trails and try their hand at old-school timekeeping. The club put together a very nice course consisting of fast flowing trails, as mentioned by Megan Horseman, who got first in women's. Dianne Fitzgerald, who came in second, said, “It wasn't all fire cuts and whoops. Jeff Pasqua, who got second overall, said, “I thought this was one of their best enduros. No games, just great racing on some of the best sand trails the ECEA has to offer. They really pin your fun meter with flowing, fast new trails. Kyle Mcdonal is the grand champion. He is currently leading his class for the year and is going to be part of the Six-Day Enduro (ISDE) representing Team United States. “Beehive was a good race. I had my fundraiser the day before at my house that a lot of the racers came out to, which was great, Mcdonal said. “Come Sunday morning, I was just so happy to be racing in Jersey back in the sand after like four straight months of rocks. Beehive seems to be known for trying to trick you so you burn a check, so I went into the race ready for that. The trails were great, with some faster trails and even some spots that slowed you down, he continued. “One of the best parts, I think, was that they have free time on the trail to gas, so me and my brother were able to go at it with each other, messing around even though we weren't getting scored. At the end of the day, though, me and Pasqua were down to a couple seconds apart. I'm glad to have gotten the overall there and can't wait for that race again next year. You can still join in and help support Kyle's efforts to go to the Six-Day Enduro. This year's Six Days will be held in San Juan, Argentina. T-shirts are up for sale, and donations are being accepted at www.gofundme.com/diw7w4. Kyle appreciates all the help and support. Beehive Enduro wasn't a great event only for Kyle, but also for Jack Cutts, who took first in
his class, A 4-stroke, and now bags the first-place spot overall for A 4-stroke for the year. There are two more enduros to go, and his finishes at them won't change his overall position; he will still have first in A 4-stroke. He has raced every race this year, and his hard work, passion, and riding ability have paid off. It’s only a matter of time before this A rider will be AA. Some other top spot riders of this event include A-200 - Jarrett Mohn, A-250 - Timothy Mettinger, A-Open - Chris Stonebrink, A-Vet - Andrew Tsakanikas, A-SR - Pete Wright, and A-SSR - Al Swizer. For B class, top riders were Albert Santelli, Shawn Cutts, Eric Seigle, Nathan Joseph, Kevin Plummer, Christopher Maychak, and Barry Kaytes.

Geisinger Children’s Miracle Network Benefit Soggy, but the lot is full!! It's all about the kids
the trails were in great shape despite all the water trying to make them into streams. It was a hoot! I mean fun, like being a kid again and playing in the rain on your bicycle - only made better by the engine and more tires! After the ride was done, we stopped and got “the numbers” from Caly Kalie. All totaled up, more than $6,444 was raised that wet Saturday morning, with a total of 312 riders. All funds go to the Janet Weiss Children’s Hospital to help kids who need it. It was a well-managed, well-marked, and well-staffed event and as usual a ton of fun.
Saturday, Sept. 13, ended up a rainy day. Driving up to AOAA it was a little gray, but as we turned the corner at the Turkey Hill, for the last stretch of the drive it opened up. I looked at my co-pilot and said, “You got rain gear?” Nowhere in either one of our minds were we going to skip it. Apparently, 311 other registered riders felt the same way. Anthracite Trail Riders (ATR) and the AOAA came together once again under ATR’s management and held the Geisinger Children’s Miracle Network ride. At the entrance to the new management building on site were tables full of volunteers registering people for the ride and selling shirts, coffee, doughnuts, and tickets for giveaways. Everyone was smiling despite the weather because we were all there to help kids. Once we got all the paperwork out of the way and got unloaded, we were met by ATR’s crack team of chaperones and headed out with our guides for the first half of the ride. As usual, the scenery and trails at the park were great, and the ride included some trails from past rides as well as some new trails. The first part of the ride was through the as-of-yet unopened west side of the park, giving riders who haven’t been there yet a glimpse of things to come, and the second half ran the east side of the park, where
Pine Creek By Monte Hayes
It’s hard to believe there have been 45 years of the East Coast 4 Wheel Drive Association. In 1969, who would have thought we would still be around 45 years later? That tells me that we as an association have been doing something right. Officers and members alike are a strong part of this tradition, and with some effort we can last another 45 years! Now on to our event. Location - Pine Creek 4 Wheelers Club, Williamsport, Pa. Craig Carr, who was once the Region B chairman, did an outstanding job of putting on a great show for this race. We started the weekend with the hill climb. The boys from the Pine Creek club really had the hill groomed perfectly, helping the racers turn some of their best times - times like the ones in B class, which had four racers go under 3 seconds. The X class racers were down in the very low 2-second range. After a short break, we headed over to the flat drags. Pine Creek had its new timing and light equipment hooked up and working very well. Everyone was happy to get actual time slips for their passes this year on the drags. The drags went very well, with only one hitch that involved an argument concerning the rules of double eliminations. But once that was settled, things went well for the rest of the day. On Sunday, Brian Rensi, the Region C chairman, hosted an awesome obstacle course with the help of Mike Klotz laying out the course. It was nice to see all the members of Region B helping Brian out with the flagging and starting of the competitors. When the dust settled (it actually rained all day), Ray Kamp finished second to Greg McGovern in the top eliminator race, with Greg walking away with the $200 prize. Later Sunday evening, the racers got together for a great dinner, and a lot of door prizes were given out. The event ended with a lot of full and happy competitors. It was a great weekend of friends, fun, and racing.
After the event, Caly followed up, adding, “Anthracite Trail Riders, the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area and all the volunteers that came out in the rain created an awesome event! From the countless hours prior in cleaning and creating safe trails to Forest Hills Volunteer Fire Caly Kalie, getting a Company for the safe crossing talking to! and Area Ambulance Services for being on call “just in case,” it takes a great community of volunteers and organizations to put together a great event for a great cause! Next year will be even better. Mark your calendars for September 12, 2015!” Thanks, ATR, for putting on a great ride … AGAIN!
