Letter from the Editor

Well, it’s hard to believe, but it’s time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you celebrate something different, then I will wish you the best of holidays. Time marches on as they say and here we are at the end of another awesome year. As I look back over this last year, it’s been an exciting one for us with lots of changes. We combined with our sister publication, Motorcycle Racing Action, in 2013 and upped our print schedule to 12 times a year. We added racing and full size off-roading. Plus, we even added some snowmobile action; ‘tis the season again, as they say. We would like to send big thanks out to you, all of our readers and advertisers and contributors. Without you, we would be playing golf or writing about sewing or something really lame I guess. We hope that you all have enjoyed our transformation and look forward to reading your issue every month. We are always open for suggestions, and there are many ways to contact us via web or phone, so please forward your ideas. In this issue, you’ll notice that we excluded our Where to Ride sections and Upcoming Events. Never fear, as we move into the New Year, they will return. Meanwhile you can find any updates on our website at: www.recrider.com and on our Facebook page. We are also aware that some of you that have subscribed for home delivery have been slow to get your copies. We are aware of the situation and we are working on a solution, so I’ll ask that you bear with us while we figure that one out. We are also looking to add some “Army benefits” as we move into 2014. No promises, but we will do our best to offer you everything we can for your money. We appreciate your support, and look forward to making Rec Rider better as we go. So again, thanks to all and please celebrate the holidays responsibly. We look forward to riding with you in the New Year.

Rec Rider Tests Yamaha’s Biggest and Best Grizzly 700 FI Auto 4 x 4 EPS and Viking FI 4 x 4 EPS There is nothing like getting out in the woods on a pair of brand new 2014 Yamaha machines. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to test out the new 2014 Grizzly 700 ATV and Viking 700 Side by Side. The first one out was the Grizzly, a 2014 with every option imaginable. Power steering, Camo Plastics, Fuel injection, etc. I don’t think there is anything they didn’t think of on this ride. I am used to riding sport quads, so I figured this “Grandpa machine” would be boring, but, boy, I was dead wrong. When pulling it off the trailer for the first time, I lay on the gas and thought I was going to flip backwards. Once I felt the power, it was nothing to pull wheelies as long as I had open runway. So not only was this beast of a quad powerful but quite nimble as well. With an amazing turning radius and fairly good suspension, it allowed us to navigate our Rec Rider Test course quite quickly. Now some may say they have ridden Grizzlys before; however, there have been a few major changes for the 2014 model. The new 2014 Grizzly has a new cylinder head and engine settings that give you more power through the low, mid, and top end. They also took the compression from 9:1 and bumped it up to 10:1 for more performance. They went ahead and put longer front and rear suspension on to give the rider a smoother more enjoyable ride. The EPS electronic power steering on the new 2014 also has new steering geometry, which allows the rider to control the machine more easily. So, with all of this in mind, the new 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI with EPS is a great new machine for everyone, from the work based farmer to the play-based rider and everyone in between.

As for the Fuel Injected 2014 Viking S x S, there is no comparison. Literally, no other company offers a three person machine that’s configured with so much thought. For instance, the seats are staggered slightly to keep broad shoulders from colliding through the bumps. The power steering allows the operator to steer with intense accuracy. The Viking models offer a 61” width, which secures the driver with a stable “feel” at any point...even when sliding broadside. The suspension and size of this machine made it an ideal sport workhorse in all our tests. The 600lb bed capacity allowed us to move some driveway stones with ease. Yamaha has made it easy to brag about this one. Our test model featured a front/rear mounted winch with quick disconnects for stowing it easily away. The interior, just like the seat design, was extremely well thought out, too. Solid half doors provide just enough protection from those rough tree branches, but are low profile enough for those “Dukes of Hazzard” style exits. The drive train was quiet, smooth, and totally responsive. The Viking felt as finely refined as a Yamaha motorcycle, for real. It’s hard to imagine that a jeep/truck/quad type of vehicle that we refer to as a S x S could have the precision engineering and refinement we’ve come to expect from Japanese motorbikes. Nevertheless, they have succeeded immensely. Get more details online at: www.yamahamotorsports.com or better yet, check out your local Yamaha Dealer to set up a test ride and see for yourself!

Brian Fisher Interview – No More Reunion By: Jim Bull

RR: First, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk with us and for the first six reunions you guys did. BF: You’re welcome. Thank you for taking the time to do this. The Reunion did get bigger and better every year for the past six years, and we thank everyone for coming out to be a part of our Reunion Events. Unfortunately, with our recent move to Tennessee and new goals we have set for our business, we just don’t have the extra time to put into an event of this magnitude. As with any business, changes do take place, and we have to do what’s right for us and our business at this time. RR: Can you tell us what year the whole “Fisher’s ATV World” concept started? BF: “Fisher’s ATV World” actually began as an “ATV Only” dealership back in 1998. It was not until 2001 that we began our new adventure in producing outdoor television. The Fisher’s ATV Reunion began in 2007. This year marked its sixth year! RR: What were your goals and visions in the beginning? BF: The goal is and always has been to provide good quality, outdoor entertainment that the entire family can enjoy, while showcasing new products, new places to ride, and our adventure lifestyle. We believe the children are the key to the future of our sport, which is why we always try to get the kids involved and do what’s right, like wearing the proper riding gear and staying on the trail, all while making it look cool to be out there riding with your friends and families! Our vision for the Reunion event was to pull together viewers of the show for a family friendly weekend full of everything off-road!

RR: At what point did you start thinking about doing a Reunion Ride, and what was the purpose of doing that? BF: We’ve been to a lot of events the last fifteen years, so we knew what we liked and didn’t like about each of them. Many riders would come out to meet up with us at different events and share their stories from the trail. About six years ago, we decided we wanted to hold our own event, so we sat down and laid out an event plan that focused entirely on the family, with an outdoor “Expo” style feel to it. The “Reunion” name just fell into place, because it was all about friends and family gathering together for a fun event. Plus, my wife always wanted a big family reunion, but our family is very small, so this event was how she got one! RR: At the time did you think it would be a once and done or were you hoping for more? BF: We were always hoping to keep the Reunion going year after year; however, we never realized how much time and money it took to pull this all together. I really don’t think people realize how much goes into putting an event on of this magnitude. If this was the only thing we had going on, it would be fine, but we are producing 20-26 new shows each year and that, in itself, takes a lot of time and travel. We do all of our own filming and post production in house, (and) each show takes approximately three weeks to complete. With our new move to the Velocity Channel in January, there is more of a demand to produce good quality shows that are even more entertaining. RR: Were all the reunions held here in Pa.? BF: Our very first Reunion event was held in Gilbert, W. Va., at the Hatfield & McCoy Trails. We had over 1,500 people come out for our first event and realized that if we were to continue doing this year after year, we would need a bigger venue in order to grow. Our second year, we teamed up with Rock Run Recreation Area in Patton, Pa., and have held it there ever since. RR: And did you ever believe they would get as big as they did? BF: The Reunion focus has always been about quality, not quantity. We didn’t have any huge increases from year to year, but we definitely grew at a steady pace. It was nice because it gave us a chance to work the bugs out and get better every year with organization and as a team. I was happy with the attendance and knew it would only get bigger, as we received lots of emails and messages about how much fun everyone had! RR: Ok, so most of us have seen the press release about no more reunions. I know your fans have come to love them, and I’m sure you’re super busy getting the TV shows produced. Everyone is curious, why no number 7 ? Can you share anymore with us about that?

BF: As I stated earlier, our move to Tennessee brought lots of changes and new directions with our business. We were picked up by Discovery’s Velocity Channel, beginning in January 2014, which demands even more of us with this change. We will also be taking our “Keepin’ It Real” Tour to dealerships across the country in 2014, which will require even more travel. It really comes down to putting on a good quality event that is just as good or better than the previous year, and without 100 percent of our efforts, we would be going backwards, which we refuse to do. Something many people do not know about me is that one of my own personal goals is motivational speaking. I have been working on writing a book the last two years and have gone to a few colleges to speak to students. I find it very rewarding to help others get on the right track to accomplish their goals and dreams. Recently, I was interviewed and picked up by Premiere Speakers Bureau here in Nashville, Tenn., which is an accomplishment in itself. I have a lot of experience to learn from, because I have been there and done that! RR: So, we know there won’t be a reunion this year, but any chance you’ll do more at a future date? BF: You just never know. Stay tuned…..We might have something even bigger up our sleeves! RR: So, maybe you have something bigger planned? Anything you can share with your home state readers about what we might be in store for? BF: We would like to take this next year and focus on shows for the new network, the “Keepin’ It Real” Dealer Tour and my motivational speaking. We have already discussed with Rock Run the possibilities of coming back for #7 sometime down the road, so stay tuned! RR: Ok, Brian, we certainly thank you for your time and your entire staff for all you’ve done for the sport to date. Can you tell us where and when we can tune in to catch the best off road show on TV?

Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association

From the desk of the President of the Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association By: Larry Pope • MAFWDA President & CORE President www.MAFWDA.ORG

I want to start out by welcoming the Association’s newest member clubs, Eagle Valley Off Roaders (EVOR) and Mid-Atlantic Jeep Club (MAJC). EVOR is heavily involved in their local community and with access-to-public-land issues in Pennsylvania. EVOR hosts, along with cooperation from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), an annual benefit ride, “Wheelin’ 4 Wishes,” with the net proceeds being donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater PA and Southern West Virginia. This club stays busy. Check out their web page at http:// eaglevalleyoffroaders.com. MAJC is just now starting up and are new not only to MAFWDA but also as a club. They held a Jeep show in Frederick, Md., in August called Mid-Atlantic Jeep Festival. I understand it was very successful for being their first one and just putting the club together at that. I hope all of the other clubs give these folks help with any questions they have in building out their clubs. (See more of the president’s message at: www.recrider.com)

CORE Casparis Exploratory Run

Near Connellsville, PA • By: Alex Hinson - CORE Member

Earlier this year Larry and I went up to Casparis to do a little reconnaissance/ exploring to see what was still open, and what a surprise! The good news is that the main entrance and most of the place is still untouched. Well, there are new signs up from the PA Park Rangers warning of the dangers of the old mine shafts and such, the openings to which have mostly disappeared or become overgrown. The hill that they made to block off the mine shafts has blended into the rest of the forest now. It’s completely overgrown. If you’ve never been there before, you could drive right by it and never know mining took place. The only sign that there’s something more to the hill now is that in a few spots you can feel an ice cold wind blowing out from the trees. There is still a path that can be used to get to the top where you can get into the mines and explore. It still looks like it’s a major pain to get up there, so we didn’t try and instead moved on. Interesting note here is that they seemed to have re-opened this part of the trails, and you can now drive past the mountain and continue on the trail that leads to the overlook. Before, this was blocked off as part of the mine closure, but looks like they’ve re-opened it. There are no signs saying otherwise. We got back onto the main trail and headed to what used to be the start of the “jeep loop” (as I call it, read past trip reports and you’ll know why), and a few spots that had some nice rock climbs have now been closed off. Signs posted at the obstacles say to not use these paths and are marked as so. (Story continued at: www.recrider.com)

On October 13, 2013, the second annual ATV guided benefit ride through the Loyalsock State Forest was held. This was the second time for this unique privilege. Over 130 participants enjoyed an autumn day, riding approximately 40 miles of Loyalsock State Forest roads and trails, all in the name of United States soldiers. Groups of riders were led by member guides, traveling through Hillsgrove to Mill Creek Road and the beginning of the designated trail for approximately 40 miles. All the riders were appreciative of this opportunity to ride ATV/UTVs in an area that is normally closed to this type of activity. Hosted by Highland Lake Snowmobile and Outdoor Recreation Club (HLSORC), President John Cropper said, “Our club was glad to host this event for a local cause this year. We worked again with Rich Glinski, District Forester from the Loyalsock State Forest.” Rich and his staff were again instrumental in the success of this event. He and his staff determined the roads and trails that would be used, prepared the trails and attended the event. His staff also provided assistance with the Special Events permit application process. HLSORC is very thankful to Rich, his staff, and the Bureau for all of their support. This year’s event raised $2,500 for the United States Army Reserve Unit 327th Quartermaster Battalion – Family Support Group. This money will be used to support the many needs of soldiers and their families. The club thanks all participants, the member and non-member volunteers, the Hillsgrove Fire Company, the Hillsgrove Beer Distributor, the Hillsgrove property owners that allowed the club access for the event, Best Line Equipment, Williamsport Honda, Ye Olde Cycle Barn, and the Bureau of Forestry staff at the Dushore office for making this event a huge success. The club also recognizes and gives a special thank you to Glenn Gough, for without your services this event would not have been possible. HLSORC, established by a group of outdoor enthusiasts in 2005, boasts over 100 members from the Lycoming, Sullivan, and surrounding counties. Members meet monthly on the last Thursday at The Country Tavern near Pennsdale, Pa. This club is also responsible for The King of the Mountain Snowmobile Hill Climb event hosted annually in March at Ski Sawmill Family Resort near Morris, Pa. For more information, please view our website at www.highlandlakerecreationclub.com.

10th Annual Squeak Mountain Guys Weekend October 26th - 27th, Clearfield County Takes place annually on the last weekend of October by invitation only at the top secret Squeak Mountain Extreme Enduro Test Facility. The riding features extremely tight and challenging trails that actually favor smaller bikes, which are easier to maneuver and lift over extreme terrain. Riders are treated to fun trails, hill climbs, and some very breathtaking views from atop the mountain. As usual, all riders had a great weekend and went home with some awesome memories! Looking forward to next year’s event!

KICK OFF to the 2014 SNOWMOBILE Season www.sledfreak.com

Any snowmobile enthusiast I talk to lately has got “the itch.” The snow cannot come soon enough for us here in the Northeast. Some of those lucky snowmobilers who live out West have had their first ride of the season already. We will just have to sit and look at their pictures and watch their videos while we wait as patiently as we can until we can kick off our season. I attend many snowmobile related events throughout the year, at least one per month. But the one I look forward to the most has become traditionally the kick-off to the snowmobile season. Myself and many other snowmobilers marked the calendar many months ago for the annual Snowdeo weekend in Old Forge, New

York. This year’s event takes place December 13 – 15 at the Hiltebrant Recreation Center Pavilion in Old Forge, N.Y. The atmosphere at Snodeo is hard to describe. Everyone is so pumped up knowing that the time that we all have waited for since the previous March is finally here. And if the snow gods cooperate and there is snow on the ground, well, it is even that much better! The real diehard snowmobilers will show up on sled if at all possible. We kick off our weekend on Friday with a stop just outside of Old Forge at the AmSnow’s NY Shootout in Woodgate, N.Y. There you get to see the new stock sleds compared on the snow. They will have all the top 2014 models dynode fresh out of the crate by Jim Czekala from DynoTech Research! Several aftermarket companies will be there as well to show off their Trail Mod and Lake Racer Mod sleds. After the Shootout, we head on up to Old Forge for Snodeo. This year marks their 37th annual. The event runs Friday from 3-7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and admission is free. All four snowmobile manufacturers will be there with their 2014 models on display all weekend, with some offering demo rides if the weather permits. (LET IT SNOW!!) In addition to the manufacturers, there are several vendors on hand all weekend with specialty clothing, awesome food, and accessories. Saturday is full of fun for the whole family. The junior racers on their 120cc sleds are always a crowd pleaser! Take a stroll around the vintage sled show, check out all the vendors, join a club, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and stay for the fireworks at 5:15 p.m. Sunday is wrapped up with the big raffle – only 1,500 tickets are sold, with first prize being Winner’s Choice of a 2014 snowmobile and 2nd through 6th place all being cash prizes. For more information about the 37th Annual Snodeo in Old Forge, visit snodeo. com or Sledfreak.com

Racing the Alaskan Iron Dog By: Indy – Sled Shed Tv.com I was recently contacted by a gentleman in Maine that wanted me to do some videos on a race team that raced the Iron Dog endurance race in Alaska. Before I get to the team, for those of you who do not know what the Iron Dog race is, I will give you a quick rundown. The first Iron Dog event started in 1984, in Big Lake following the Northern Route of the Historic Iditarod Trail to Nome. The event began as the “Iron Dog Iditarod,” but the name was quickly changed the next year to the “Gold Rush Classic.” From 1990 on, the race was recognized as the “Iron Dog Gold Rush Classic” for a decade, until Tesoro Corporation became a title sponsor. Since 2008, the Alaska National Guard has continuously held the top sponsor position and most recently became the title sponsor. The 2013 Alaska National Guard Iron Dog is now enjoying a strong resurgence in awareness, attendance and participation by more than 20 communities across Alaska. The Iron Dog course is now over 2,000 miles, starting in Big Lake to Nome and finishing in Fairbanks, making it the world’s longest snowmobile race. Participants must traverse in some of Alaska’s most remote and rugged terrain while confronting some the harshest winter conditions. Survival skills are essential, making it the world’s toughest snowmobile race. All teams in race classes are a team of two persons and two snowmobiles for safety. The Iron Dog offers a non-competitive Trail Class, giving adventure seekers an opportunity to travel 1,100 miles on the Northern Route of the Historic Iditarod Trail to Nome. These teams of two or more travel the same race trail as the Pro Class Teams. Iron Dog, Inc. brings a world class event across the state of Alaska each February, impacting over twenty five Alaskan communities, beginning with the “Iron Dog Safety EXPO” in Wasilla, Alaska. This expo provides a unique winter recreational trade show that brings in industry vendors, promotes snowmobile safety and education through seminars, and offers a face-to-face opportunity for the fans and media to meet with notable Iron Dog athletes. What classes are available to run the Iron Dog? Very simple, there are two classes: the Pro Class that runs the complete 2,000 mile track and the Trail Class that starts two days ahead of the pro class and only runs 1,100 miles to Nome. The Pro Class snowmobiles are either 2 stroke 600cc or the Yamaha Nitro and Artic Cat 1100 4stroke Non turbo models. No engine mods are allowed; everything is to be OEM, with the exception of bracing or reinforcement of the chassis. Same rules apply for the Trail Class as well. Who races in the Iron Dog? Well, I know of two such people from Maine. Team #31 consists of Tim Lessard, owner of Grip-N-Rip Racing Products out

of Monmouth, Maine, who has Run Cain’s Quest, a Canadian snowmobile endurance race spanning over 1,554 miles and who has finished in the top 3 twice and won the event once. His team mate is Chad Dow, owner of Nitro Trailers out of Unity, Maine, who has also competed in Cain’s Quest as well as the Rock Maple racing series. I recently sat down with a member of their race team, Josh Miville from Chase Toys, a Ski Doo dealer in Unity, Maine, and I asked him a few brief questions about preparing for the Iron Dog race. Indy: Josh, how long does it take to prepare the sleds for the Iron Dog? Josh: It takes right around 2 months to get the sleds ready to race. Indy: Team #31 raced the Iron Dog last year, how well did the team finish? Josh: We had one of the sleds go down about halfway through the race; we ended up in 28th position because of mechanical problems. Indy: What can take a team out of the race? Josh: Mechanical problems are the most common, but weather conditions, trail conditions, and just plain getting off track can take anyone of the racers out at any time. Indy: Yes, the weather. I am sure that could become a problem in Alaska. Josh: For sure, machines freezing up at a stop, riders getting frostbite, or just blinding snow or ice can really wreak havoc on any team. Indy: What are the total costs of running a race like this from beginning to end? From sled prep to traveling and racing the Iron Dog? Josh: It takes right around $50,000 total to do this race. A lot of it comes from our sponsors and donations to the race team. Indy: I know you are busy preparing the new sleds for this year’s race, thank you for taking the time to talk to me, and good luck this year! Josh: Thank you, Indy. The whole team gives 110 percent right down to the last mile of the race. With a lot of hard work, maybe we'll be talking to you from Fairbanks in February in the winner’s circle! So, that is the Iron Dog snowmobile endurance race. I think this race is probably one of the most grueling races in America today, totaling 2,000 miles on a snowmobile in the Alaskan wilderness in February. I would love to see it for myself one day if I can. Would I ever run in the Iron Dog? That I think I will leave to the professionals, but I would be happy just to experience it as a spectator. Best of luck to team #31 and all the team entries in the Alaskan Iron Dog snowmobile race!

We at Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club would like to take a moment to let all you Red Rider readers get to know a little bit about us and our lodge. (By the way “The Lodge” is how we affectionately refer to the club.) The lodge was built back in 1990 by a few members of what was once the Elimsport Snowmobile Club. It is located in Clinton County, Northcentral Pennsylvania, just off Route 44. We are approximately 5 miles north of Haneyville and are situated in Sproul State Forest with Tiadghton State Forest right across the highway. We have access to hundreds of miles of state snowmobile trails right outside of our front door. From the lodge we also have access to good hunting locations as well as good trout streams. Plus, we are located just a short distance from Pine Creek Rails to Trail hiking and biking. So, if your fancy is snowmobiling for miles through some of the most beautiful winter scenery this state has to offer; or big game hunting (deer, bear, or turkey); or you love to fish for native brook trout, whether it is the big streams like Pine Creek or the little creeks like Hyner Run, our lodge has it to offer! The big difference between our club and others is that we are a membersowned, sleep-in club. We have a large living room, a large eat-in kitchen, and four bathrooms, all of which comes in handy when the sledding is good and we have a full house of snowmobilers. We heat with a wood stove in the kitchen and a really nice stone fireplace in the living room. For information on membership visit our website at: www. hynermountainsnowmobileclub.com. I will continue to put articles in Red Rider, so keep on watching and reading. THINK SNOW!!! Dan Casey

2014 Dice Run

S821233

There are some changes for the annual 2014 Dice Run. The first and biggest change is the changing of the date to January 18, 2014, with a date of January 25, 2014, if no snow on January 18. This is Martin Luther King Holiday Weekend. The second change is the adding of Keener's Kountry Store to our list of stops. We are hopeful and banking on a better snow cover in the month of January. With the 2013-14 snowmobile riding season upon us, I would like to introduce you to the Pa. Snowseekers Snowmobile Club, Inc. The Snowseekers were formed in 1972 by local snowmobile enthusiast Dale Kline and his wife, Ginny. As most of the riding opportunities were 'up north' around Erie or the Allegheny National Forest, Dale organized the first Snowseeker monthly meeting on November 21, 1972, and the Snowseekers were born! I am proud to say the Snowseekers still meet monthly, year round, till this day. After forming and traveling for three more winters to the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) for club rides at members’ camps, the Snowseekers got serious and started looking for property "up there." In 1975, an old general store/gas station that members rode to was up for sale in Highland, Elk County, Pa., right in the middle of the ANF. “The Highland Haven,” as it was named by the club, was purchased in 1976 with Roger Corl as our President, who, at 93, is still a Snowseeker! The Haven continues to be our clubhouse and our home away from home. To this day, it is our base for riding, storytelling, and camaraderie. We also use it for hunting season room & board fundraising, local elections, golf outings, canoe trips, an annual 'Thunder in the Forest' motorcycle poker run for breast cancer awareness, quad riding, and even a few wedding receptions. We are unique in that our membership base is in the Pittsburgh area, but our clubhouse is 2 and half hours away in the ANF. Club members are very active in local trail issues on the ANF and meet twice a year with National Forest representatives about these issues to try and resolve them. The Snowseekers have been the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association’s "Club of the Year" many times, and we were named the #1 "New Generation" snowmobile club in the United States by Ski-Doo/Bombardier. For you Rec Rider enthusiasts, our clubhouse is located at 13026 Rt. 948, Highland Corners, PA 16735, approximately 10 miles north of the Marienville Trail Head and one mile from the Timberline Trail Head on the Allegheny National Forest. General Membership was originally limited to the Pittsburgh areas of Beaver, Butler, Lawrence & Allegheny counties, but was later expanded to include Armstrong, Venango, Mercer, and Washington counties. To this day, to be a member with voting rights, you must reside in one of these 8 counties and currently own a registered snowmobile in Pennsylvania. The club also has a limited number of Associate Memberships available for non-snowmobilers and outdoor enthusiasts with no residency restrictions. The club meets the first Thursday of each month, yearround, in Zelienople, Pa. Forty-one years later and still going strong! Come and join us if you think you can keep up. Stop in and see us sometime at Highland Corners, find us on Facebook, or visit our web-site at http://www.pasnowseekers.org/. See you on the trail, and, in the meantime, 'Think Snow!" Mark Mueller, President Pennsylvania Snowseekers Snowmobile Club

Gator Skins Product Review – Stay Warm By: Bill Kaster - Rec Rider Crew Well, if any of you motor heads are like us, the riding does not stop when winter shows up, it only gets better. The late snowcovered, moon-lit trails provide some of the most amazing sights and lack of sounds ever. The only problem with this is the COLD! Well, do we have a great product for you. Gatorskins are 100 percent AMERICAN MADE from a revolutionary ultramicrofiber material developed by the scientists at DuPont. A single fiber is so small that it is smaller than a human red blood cell, yet Gatoskins hold a greater amount of warm air than other leading material. Not only are they warm but they are 100 percent windproof, water resistant, breathable and rugged. Developed for motorcycle riders, Gatorskins provide a revolutionary product that lives up to its claims. Three times warmer than wool and lighter than paper, they will never shrink, rip, fray, or tear. With all of these claims, I thought it was time to put them to the test. Now, being that they are used by our U.S. Navy Seals, Coast Guards, and USMC Special Operations branches, I figured they had to be good, but, man, did I underestimate them. I decided the first test would be a balmy 35 degree 5k run. So, as normal, I put my under layer on (Gatorskins) and a t-shirt and sweat shirt. Well, let’s just say I was way overdressed and within the first mile the sweat shirt was thrown to the ground. The crazy part was that I was bone dry and my sweat shirt was soaked. The sweat wicking property of these things was absolutely amazing. Never before have I worn a type of under layer that could keep me that dry. Plus when the race was over, because they are windproof, I was staying warm standing still. Not like other materials that allow air through, so when you stop, you’re freezing. Needless to say, I was sold on the product immediately. So now that I had put them through a very active test, it was time to try them out hunting. The first good thing about using them for hunting is they will not retain smells. So whether it’s the smells of your house or your own body, they with not chase your game away! The next advantage is the silent aspect of material, it made moving around very easy and very quiet. Now, I am a fan of wearing them against my skin, but due to the windproof design they will keep you warm as a base layer or even as an outer layer. This means no matter how you wear them, where you wear them, or what you wear them for, Gatorskins will keep you warm.

night, but came home with a smile on my face and as a big fan of the product. I’m not a fan of this early cold weather; however, it provided ample opportunity to get this test done in time for deadline. So in mid November on a chilly morning, I mounted my dual sport and hit the road. The temps were in the mid thirties and there were 20 mph winds that day. Typically, I would have had several layers on, along with my Goretex Jacket, to hit the streets on a day like this. Instead, I hit the road with just the Gatorskins and a hooded sweatshirt. Man, I couldn’t believe it. Even at highway speeds, I was comfortable riding. After a while, I returned home, and I knew I had to compare this product to something similar. So I pulled a regular thermal type top out of my wardrobe that you would buy at any department or sporting goods store. I then lost the Gatorskins and put on the same hooded sweatshirt and off I went. I turned down the highway and at that same 60 mph as just a short time before, I was ready to call it quits. The big determiner was when I had to stop at the red light and the wind was cutting through me like it hadn’t just minutes before with the Gatorskins. I was a true believer at that point and ready to go and outfit my entire family with this product. To find the nearest retail outlet near you, give them a call at (717) 501-4655 or check them out online at www.gator-skins.com.

Street Bike Test – by Jim Bull So, you say, will they keep me warm while I ride? First off, before I go there, I have to attest to what Bill reported on earlier in this article. I layered up to do a night race photo shoot with my newly acquired Gatorskins, and I had the same problem as him. I was shedding outer layers while the rest of the crowd was sitting huddled in a corner trying to stay warm. I anticipated freezing that

The year 2013 is almost over, and after postponing our spring Hare Scramble…… twice……and promoting three events in six weeks, this riding season ended up being a great one. In the last issue of Rec Rider, Joann Hauser did a great job of reporting on our two day ECEA Hare Scramble “Down by the River,” and we would like to thank her for covering our event. We would also like to thank Jim Bull and the entire Rec Rider staff for allowing clubs such as the Back Mountain Enduro Riders to do these articles and let everyone know what our club is doing on and off of the track, as well as in and out of the woods. Planning for the 2014 riding season has started. We are scheduled to promote three events for the next riding season. Our scheduled dates for our Hare Scrambles are June 8th and August 24th for “Down by the River.” But to start the season off right, we have moved our Dual Sport ride, known as the “Lawton 100,” back to the spring, and it is scheduled to be held May 18th. A few of our important club members have been very busy communicating with the local landowners in the Lawton area and have secured an estimated 25 miles of woods riding to add to the course so we can eliminate some of the on-road riding. We are very excited to get back there and show dual sport riders the best of what Northeastern Pennsylvania has to offer. This event will still be “big bike” friendly but will also be more friendly to the “hard core” dual sport riders. The event will have more single track and enough open spaces to accommodate a converted dual sport KTM 200xc to a BMW 1200gs and everything in between. There will be great terrain for all who love the great sport of Dual Sport Riding, as well as great camping, great riding, great people and great fun! On a sad note, the Back Mountain Enduro Riders have a lost a long time member. After a long and valiant fight with brain cancer, we lost our friend. You will be missed… RIP John. For updated information, fliers, or to register, please stay in contact with us at our website, www.bmer.org or become a friend of our Facebook page @ Back Mountain Enduro riders. As always, until next issue, Ride Safe and Ride Hard!!

Sun Star Work-z Sprocket – MSRP: $99.98 Sun Star is the leading manufacturer of OEM sprockets in the world. However, OEM items are not the only sprockets they make. This is the Works-Z Steel Sprocket. With its off-the-wall alternating tooth design, it definitely stands out in a crowd. Being that it is made from the highest quality stainless steel available, it weighs up to 50 percent less than other steel sprockets and is five times harder that the typical aluminum sprocket. This gives it a longer wear life, which means less money out of your pocket. Contact your local Tucker Rocky Dealer or go to www.sunstar-mc.com.

IMS Pro Series Pegs - MSRP: $96.00 From the powder coated, polished finish to the wide design, the looks of these pegs are great. But looks are not everything, and these pegs also provide up to double the contact area of OEM pegs, which allows the rider much more grip and control. These pegs also feature taller outside spikes, which keep the foot locked into place. This gives the rider a more secure footing, which in turn allows better handling and control. After all, who couldn’t use a little better handling on those wet and muddy afternoons or during the last hour of your harescramble race when everyone else is slipping in their mud caked pegs? What a great way to improve lap times or just the overall enjoyment of your next ride. When you’re ready to upgrade your pegs, head out to your local dealer or hop on to the web at www. imsproducts.com.

Woods PowrGrip Lights – MSRP: Varies These lights are a must have for any off-road enthusiast. Whether on a bike, quad, three-wheeler or even a bicycle, these lights are amazing. It makes night riding that much more enjoyable and safe when you can see everything. They light up the trail like no headlight can do. Even on the side by side they add just a little bit more light to the trail, which is optimal, especially if you’re racing. So if night riding is something you like to do, I highly recommend checking these lights out. With many different packages available, you can find the one that suits your situation the best. Get on the web and go to www.vacuummounts.com for more information or to order yours today!

Bead Buster - MSRP: 99.99 I’m assuming most of you ATV and S X S riders have needed to change a tire at least once on your machine. If it turned out anything like my attempts, did you end up driving your truck over the tire? Well, now there is a tool for us! Bead Buster XB-450 is the answer. Now you can change your tire anywhere, anytime, without any tool mounting or expensive machines. All you need is a Bead Buster XB-450 and am ¾ inch wrench, socket, or impact driver. With its rider conscious design, this tool will not damage rims, and it allows you to change tires without a $1,000 tire machine. There is no more useful tool on the trail or in your garage than this. Check them out at www.beadbuster.com or give the company a call at 215-948-2302. Tell them Rec Rider Sent you!

Yamaha PW3028 Pressure Washer - MSRP: $749.00 When you’re done riding and the only color you can see is “mud,” then it’s time to get out the pressure washer. Yamaha’s new PW3028 is an all-new model that features an industry-first multi-nozzle spray tip. Combined with a pump from Cat Pumps, this washer puts out 3000psi at 2.8 gallons per minute. This makes your cleanup a breeze. The pivoting tip allows you to easily reach those hard to get to nooks and crannies most of our vehicle seem to specialize in. This, all accompanied with a 30ft steel braided hose and a 192cc 4 stroke engine, means you will be able to wash the machines season after season. If it’s time to upgrade your pressure washer, head over to your local Yamaha Dealer or get online and check them out at www.yamaha-motors.com for more information.

National Dual Sport Hammer Run 2013 Hosted by Tri-County Motor Cycle Club and the AMA •Port Elizabeth N.J. • By: Joann Hauser From November 2nd to the 3rd, Tri-County Sportsman Motor Cycle Club and the AMA hosted a National Dual Sport event, the Hammer Run. This event brought nearly 1,000 riders over the two day period. Some came from as far as California to hit the trails of Southern N.J. Riders were able to enjoy 85 miles a day of single and two-track trails. They offered riders who wanted a little more of a challenge a Hero Section; this Hero Section would prove to be just that, a bit more challenging. A prize was given to the persons that traveled the furthest to ride this dual sport. There was a drop with free snacks and drinks for the riders on Saturday, along with free dinner and a live band and bonfire. They started them off Sunday morning with a free continental breakfast, along with lunch after the riders were through. This was really one spectacular event. I can truly understand why riders from all over would come to ride this event. Riders could enjoy the trails, time with their friends and family, eat lots of food, listen to music, and sit next to a campfire at night talking about their adventure that day - what could be better than that? Nothing, according to these dual sport riders and their family and friends! I have to say, seeing this amount of riders for one event showed me their true passion for their sport and how much riding actually means to each and every one of them. A thumbs up has to go to all who made this dual sport possible, for all the time and effort and hard work that was involved in putting this together. You all did an incredible job hosting and putting it together. An event like this could not have been an easy task. But I am sure,

judging by the looks of the riders, that they all thank you for such a memorable weekend of riding. I am also sure that they will look forward to next year. Thank you again, each and everyone involved. This event will be one that will be remembered by hundreds of riders for many years to come. Adventure Tour of the Virginias By: Denny Mann

As the autumn leaves begin to disappear, I have time to think of all the dual sport events I have experienced this riding season. I was fortunate to ride a number of AMA Dual Sports and Enduros, as well as take several private trips with friends. But one event outperformed the competition. My five day, 800 mile ride through Virginia and West Virginia was the brain child of my good friend Phil Wiegand. The ride was centered on the 9th round of the Grand National Cross Country Series race at Snowshoe, W. Va. This adventure ride led fifteen riders through some of the most scenic mountains in the Northeast, passing through three National Forests and two State Forests. Phil has made the trip for years, and after dialing in the route he opened it up to the larger group. Phil went all out with the help of his family and close buddies to create the best group ride of the year and possibly of my life. The attention to details surpassed any professional outfitters for the quality of the ride to the quality of the lodging. I cannot imagine the amount of time that was spent in making this event happen. For the first day of the trip, June 29th, we left from Strasburg, Va., and started with a15 mile ride east on asphalt to the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson National Forests. Then we rode south on the Massanutten Mountain for a dirt road warm up, before turning into the Peter’s Mill Run OHV park for a 6.5 mile trail ride, followed by another 15 miles of trail riding fun in Tasker’s Gap OHV Park. I had no idea how close to home these riding areas were, just one hour from Chambersburg, Pa. For more information, go to www.fs.usda.gov/detail/gwj/passes-permits or call 540-984-4101. We then exited the National Forest and crossed the Shenandoah Valley and headed west. After riding over seemingly endless mountains into West Virginia, we stopped for lunch in Riverton. On a full stomach, we entered the Monongahela National Forest and started climbing up to Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia at an elevation of 4,863 feet. While gazing at the beauty of the Mountain State, I was taken by surprise with the entrance of another group of adventure riders. As it turns out the group was from Winchester, Va., and heading south to Snowshoe as well. They had basically ridden our ride backwards and told me what to expect after we left the Snowshoe Resort. We parted ways and rode south through the Monongahela National Forest into the town of Cass, home of the scenic Cass Railroad. Then we proceeded on to Route 66 for a fast and twisted ride up to Snowshoe Ski Resort, www.snowshoemtn.com, to end Day One. June 30th was a day of relaxation and spectating, with all of the excitement of GNCC racing. Kailub K. Russell pulled out a win over Charles Mullins, and Thaddeus Duvall rounded out the 3rd spot on the podium.

July 1st began with a huge breakfast at the Loggers’ Run Condo prepared by the group. We discussed our 2nd day of riding over the meal, and Phil told us of an optional ride he would lead after supper to the site of the “Dirty Dancing” film. So we geared up and headed 150 miles south to Paint Bank, Va., through Watoga and Calvin Prince State Forests. On the way we stopped at the Humpback Covered Bridge Park in Covington, Va., for a long lunch break and a swim. This was the hottest and driest day of riding, and everyone enjoyed splashing around, but after lunch we returned to the dirt, winding our way up to Potts Mountain. We rode the mountain spine with views southeast across the Jefferson National Forest towards Roanoke, Va. After riding Potts Mountain Road, we ended on Route 311 just above Paint Bank and our lodging for the night, Depot Lodge. The Depot Lodge, www. depotlodge.com, has such great facilities, I chose not to ride the optional trip to Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke, Va. A half dozen, however, did participate in the evening ride. For more information on the “Dirty Dancing” film site, go to www.mtnlakelodge.com‎. The 4th day adventure of the Virginias started out with a light drizzle, leading into a full blown downpour. Lucky for us, heading northwest, we left the showers in Alleghany, Va., and by lunch time we were dry again. After lunch we stopped in Richwood, W. Va., for fuel and headed into Big Ditch Wildlife Area. Then we proceeded up the Williams River and then crossed over the mountain to the north into the Elk River Valley, where we spent our last night at the Elk Springs Resort. The final day, July 3rd, would prove to be the most asphalt of our trip. We wiggled our way north through Elkins, W. Va., and up US Route 33 for lunch at the Stuart Recreation Area in Monongahela National Forest. Then we proceeded further north into Canaan Valley and up onto the Dolly Sods for spectacular views. (Dolly Sods is a 17,371-acre bog area that rests between 2,500 and 4,700 feet in elevation. This high-altitude plateau was named after 18th-century German homesteading family, the Dahles, and a local term for an open mountaintop meadow, the sods.) After coming down from Dolly Sods and coming into Petersburg, W. Va., we hit State Route 55 and rode for 60 miles on pavement back to Strasburg, Va. Looking back, I now view West Virginia in a very different way. It is truly the Mountain State and unlike any other area on the East Coast, and the western part of Virginia is just breathtaking. Everyone should add these two states to their Bucket Lists.

Hatfield McCoy National Trail Fest – 2013 By: The Rec Riding Crew Rooted deep in the earth of West Virginia, a massive trail system has been carved into the landscape. A trail system, truly, like no other. I could only compare this place to the Swiss Alps for a skier... or Woodstock for a musician. This world class trail system is referred to as Hatfield- McCoy Trails. Not only were we going to get the chance to dabble around their insanely vast terrain, we were going to attend their biggest event of the year…National Trail Fest 2013. Trail Fest was to be a four-day event that opened the entire town of Gilbert, W. Va., to dirt bikes, four wheelers, side-by-sides and the like. Yes, you heard that correctly…The town is opened up for riding! We all got in the RV about midnight, just dying to get on the road. Our Rec Rider Crew was so large this time that we actually had to use a Motorhome to accommodate all 5 of us. We knew we had about 500 miles to go before we would arrive in the spectacular hills of West Virginia. We talked the whole way down about the events and entertainment that fest offered. We were excited to meet Ryan Young and witness his AMAZING trials bike demonstrations, as well as see the drag strip, the numerous kids events, the Polaris and Can Am demo rides, the professional fireworks show…all of it! We were ready! We knew how spectacular this event had been in the past and also knew how capable we were of adding to the fun. We drove, laughed, and eventually arrived to a warm welcome from the beautiful town of Gilbert. Of course, the first basic observation was the fact that the roads were riddled with ATVs, bikes, and UTVs. I finally believed the hype. All the hype about “cruising around town” on your quad was a reality now. Need something from the grocery store? Hop on your four wheeler and swing by. Need some gas or a Big Mac from McDonalds? Take your dirt bike through the drive thru. Go ahead, use your imagination. Traffic jams in a side-by-side can actually turn out to be pretty fun.

It didn’t take long for us to set up our camping rig and fuel up our rides. We met some important administrators, identified the many food vendors, and very easily dealt with the sign-in process. It was apparent that people were excited. The staff, as well as the visitors, all seemed to be thrilled… as well as ourselves. First things first… let’s get lost! The Rec Rider Crew prides themselves on some of our initial impressions of a new location. We systematically split up, cover some ground, and get 4-5 different first impressions of the terrain. Then we sit around the campfire that night and compare what we learn. That particular night, it seemed like all of our stories revolved around blasting around town and seemingly running errands on our rides. It was obvious that we all enjoyed this newfound freedom, not just me. I realized that my adolescent dream of riding a wheelie down main street wasn’t just mine…it was all of ours. This is a dose of freedom everybody must get a chance to encounter, young or old. Throughout the next few days, we were able to create so many memories; they were hard to keep organized. From the totaled/abandoned/stolen ATV Retrieval Mission to Billy’s Giant Mud Pit Belly Flop for Charity…and everything in between. These moments were truly priceless and seriously exciting. This all took place because the people of West Virginia saw the value in opening up their vast natural resources to the world of off-roading… with open arms. They saw a way to bring revenue to their community in an obvious way. Let the people be free, and the people will come. The success of this concept was evident on the faces of the local business people. On the trails, in the streets, or back at camp, Hatfield-McCoy sets the standard for this sport. The rest of the industry should be taking notes. National Trail Fest 2014 will be held from October 9-14 in 2014. Check out their website for more info and sign up early to reserve your spot!

Hello again to the REC Rider world! Sprocket here, coming at you after a long stint in the woods. A lot has been going on here in my neck of the woods. It’s been such a long time since I’ve written an article that I’ve almost forgotten how. It is not that I don’t have anything to write about, it is just that I’ve been so busy and have not taken the time to write. This time of year there is always something going on that is related to hunting. As most everyone can tell, my life revolves a lot around hunting and hunting seasons. My two boys and I are always on a relentless quest during hunting season; and the results that we always hope for is a full freezer. I always send out many invites to my “deer friends,” notifying them that I have plenty of room in the freezer where they can take up residence. But I have yet to have any show up voluntarily to inhabit that space. And so the drama continues! This has been a very different type of year for us. Normally, our routine is for the three of us, my sons Hunter and Chase and I, to begin prepping for the year’s deer hunt in July and August. With both of them having several years of hunting under their belts by now, everything is usually routine. Over the years I have tried to teach them everything that I’ve learned in my life about deer, deer movements, food, travel, and bedding areas. With them learning everything that I have taught them, I no longer have to explain what I am looking for and why I am looking for it in all the areas that we scout out. But this year turned out to be a little different, well, a lot different. My oldest son Hunter’s girlfriend, Katie, which some of you have already met during our fishing excursions earlier in the year, decided that she, too, was going to be a hunter. I told him if this was going to happen that teaching her everything would be his responsibility. She already had her own bow and thought that she was ready to go. We started target practicing in the backyard in July of this year. She was given a youth compound bow several years ago by her mother and father. When I first saw her shoot that bow, I was very impressed that she could actually hit the target. After all she was a girl, and up until this time, no girl has ever been a part of my hunting party. And come to think of it, she appeared to be a better shot than Hunter. As I continued to watch her shoot, it appeared that the bow she was shooting was way too easy for her to draw. At that point I determined that the peak draw weight was already set at 25 pounds. I told her she would need to come up with another bow to go hunting. (Story continued at: www.recrider.com.)
