Letter from the Editor
Hello, all, and welcome back to our midsummer issue. We have been out quite a bit since Now In Rec Rider our last writing with all Off-Road Trucks of the summer events finally getting going. On & Buggies Memorial Day weekend, the Rec Riding Crew headed toward the west to pay a visit to Mountain Ridge ATV Resort. The guys had a great time and made some new friends while reviewing all the area has to offer. They then headed south into West Virginia for a twofold mission, where they completed another park review for Burning Rock while also participating in the annual Thrills in the Hills event. You can check out all the details inside this issue. In addition, we had a couple of our dedicated regulars out playing around on two wheels at a couple of staple Dual Sport rides offered in Pennsylvania. Check out these two features and the great clubs that run them. We also have our regular club updates, recommendations on where to ride and details on upcoming events. New in this issue, we’ve slipped in some news from our larger four-wheeled brethren. Check out the story from the Rausch Creek Off Road Park and Scrubgrass Village. If your ATV or side-by-side needs a rest, just jump in your hauler and go take in some airconditioned fun. We ask that you all, at least, shoot them an email and welcome them aboard, and if you know of any events or clubs related to off-road trucks or buggies, have them give us a ring. We’ve also included some competitive events in this issue from a local pro Hill Climb and a Hare Scramble event. As always, we welcome your feedback to find out if we’re doing it right. Emails are always welcome, and better yet, you can post away on our Facebook page. Coming up in August, we will be heading out to Fisher’s ATV Reunion at Rock Run, and then we’re heading north in September to upstate N.Y. to check out their trail system and the 2012 ATV Manufacturers Expo. You can get details on both of these great events in our pages as well. Please remember to keep an eye on our website at: www. RecRider.com and stay tuned into us on Facebook and the pages of Rec Rider. You never know just what you might find. Well, that’s all for now. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you on the trail.

Burning Rock Adventure Park Hosts - “Thrills in the Hills”
Scenery – Burning Rock has it.
By: Brady Marzella Buried deep in the hills of West Virginia, lays a quaint little town known as Sophia. On the surface, you would get the impression of a proud, old coal town. Driving through the square, Phyllis’ Antique shop gladly boasts wares related to the town’s history. We initially thought that maybe we were in the wrong place. It seemed a bit too quiet for the name “Thrills in the Hills.” That was until we crested a steeply peaked mountain just outside Thanks to the crew at Burning of town, where the whole mood Rock for making it all happen. changed. Pulling into the park, our eyes experienced sensory overload. We didn’t know whether to focus on the vast amounts of offroad machines, the extreme race courses that had been set up to challenge most everyone, or the incredible Twin Racing Zipline (yes, zipline), which flew people above the park every few minutes. All I knew was that I had no idea where to start. Luckily, Dyane, Burning Rock’s Director, had realized who we were and offered some insight to us in the solitude of the woods at our campsite. Burning Rock was looking more like Spring Break in the Mountains!! I thought to myself, “Should we report on this Thrills in the Hills thing or the 100 miles of trails in these woods?” We decided that it was our duty, as the Rec Rider Crew, to report on all of our findings. We knew it would take all day and all night, but we were willing to do the work! (Wink, wink.) Don’t get me wrong, the riding looked incredible, but then so did the live band, the food and parts vendors, the R/C car track, the dirt drag strip or any part of Pro Armors Extreme Mountain Challenge. I mean, this place was hoppin’. We kept our composure, set up our camp, fired up our bikes and
An abandoned highway site made for some high speed fun.
disappeared into the woods for a look. Right away steep mountains were evident. Straight up… then straight down. The trails were lined with rocky cliffs that dropped many, many feet. For us, there is nothing better. Climbing and descending are some of the most exciting aspects of our sport. West Virginia is full of steep topography, and we were getting the chance to ride some of its best. Traces of town history were apparent in the abandoned buildings we found on the trails, and the locals were eager to share their knowledge of the land. We stumbled upon an abandoned four-lane highway construction site. We were like kids in a candy store. We were lucky enough to only blow-up one engine on what seemed like an endless straight away. Back at camp, it felt like the carnival was in town. Brian Fisher and his TV crew were filming the whole weekend, people were hammering on their machines in Pro-Armors Extreme Mountain Challenge, and the zipline just kept zippin’. (I even remember seeing Flying Pigs at one point!) The campsites were full, and people were happy. Two Days later, with little or no sleep, we determined this event should be marked as a holiday on the Rec Rider calendar. The people of the Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Area worked in perfect harmony to make sure this action-packed weekend went on without a hitch. We owe it all to them. Do yourself, and Burning Rock, a favor, and stay tuned for next year’s Thrills in the Hills. Check out their well-built website and see for yourself what’s hiding in the hills of West Virginia! OHV Armstrong County, PA By: Rick Noble I’ve been granted the privilege of informing my fellow OHVers of one of Pennsylvania’s newest offroad riding parks, the Scrubgrass Village OHV Park in Western Pa. OHVers are very fortunate to have such a unique park to enjoy. I say unique because this is not some recently reclaimed strip mine property. This is 1,245 acres of scenic Allegheny mountain real estate with immense 800-foot elevation changes topped with beautiful rolling meadows bordering a clear, trout-filled Mahoning Creek. Within the thick forests of these hills, you will find old logging roads from days gone by. Along these forest roads, Steve Stiller and his crew have carved many new miles of challenging OHV trails— anything from leisure riding to full differential lock hill climbs and rock crawls that have to be seen to be believed. Speaking of the rock crawls, Scrubgrass has one of the area’s best glacial deposits of boulders for the adventurist to try to conquer. Affectionately called the Rock Garden, I have purposely spent many trail breaks at the Rock Garden to watch Jeeps and custom rock crawling machines attempt to navigate the huge boulders. It’s incredible to witness what man and machine can conquer with skill, finesse and the proper equipment. One would think having this many different types of machines sharing the same trails at the same time would be utter chaos, but nothing could be farther from the truth. The courtesy and trail etiquette at Scrubgrass are second to none. There truly is a brotherhood in the off-road community among all OHVers. Armstrong County owes its thanks for this new off-road park to one of its former business owners, Frank Garmong. Frank’s dream was to retire on this property to hunt, fish and relax with family and friends, but he decided the property was just too beautiful not to share with his fellow outdoorsmen. Along came Steve Stiller, fellow business owner of Stiller Motorsports. Over the years, Frank and Steve became very close friends. Hearing of Frank’s generous offer of wanting to share his property, Steve was granted permission to create an OHV park there. Western Pennsylvania is now blessed with one of the most beautiful and fastest growing OHV parks bar none.
PA’s newest OHV Park The park is presently open two weekends a month to OPEN RIDE days. Present fees are $20 per machine and $5 per passenger. On the off weekends, there is always something happening at Scrubgrass, as Steve Stiller is also the area promoter of the AWRCS race series. Presently, Steve and his crew have created 18 miles of race tracks and courses on top of 50 + miles of trails, and it’s still growing. If off-roading or racing isn’t your thing, you can also experience horseback riding, GEO Tracking, hiking, biking, cross country running, kayaking and tubing, fishing, hunting or even schedule a Scouting event. So, if you’re tired of the same old boring trails in your neighborhood, come on out to Scrubgrass OHV Park. I guarantee it will become your new favorite riding destination, just as it has become mine. Get more details online at www. Great trails coming right up! By: Al Sain, Frontline 67 Rep – PA OHV After the first day of classroom work, attendees were offered a chance to visit the new Anthracite Off-road Adventure Park (AOAA) being built about 30 miles from the hotel. While work has not started on the trails, I had the opportunity to take an ATV ride through the area on trails the local riders have been riding. It is a typical PA coal mining and strip area, but the master plan will give all outdoor enthusiasts a great place to enjoy. The existing trails gave us a quick view of the some of the terrain and vistas, and the 6,500 acres will provide hiking, biking, horseback riding, as well as 24 miles of single-track, 47 miles of ATV riding, and 13 miles of dedicated 4x4 trails organized around 52 miles of shared use motorized trails.
Al Sain is director of communications for the ICV ATV Club located in Fayette County. Al is also the Frontline 67 rep for Fayette County in the Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicle Association (PaOHV). What’s more important than having great trails to ride your bike, ATV, or side-by-side on? Most will reply that we want MORE trails, and I understand. But, according to the “experts,” we would really prefer fewer miles of high quality trails than more miles of bad trails. Explained that way, I tend to agree. And that was the theme of the OHV Recreation Management Workshop sponsored by PaOHV, PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society (PRPS) and the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC). Better trails mean more fun and less danger for the rider, less maintenance for the work crews, and less money spent by the trail owner. When a trail system is designed and built properly, we will have more money and work time to put in more miles. And that means we all get what we want. I am ACTIVELY involved in trail layout, construction, maintenance, mapping, and signage for an ATV club in southwestern PA. Being involved in all these phases of trail operation and then having to raise funds to pay for it all, I thought it was a good idea to invest
$300 of club money (and some of my own) to attend this conference and learn everything I could. Presentations were given by great trail designers and builders like Dick Dufourd and Tom Crimmins, who both provide trail consulting and design for new and existing OHV trails systems all over the U.S. When Dick Dufourd started by saying, “Just because there is an existing trail doesn’t mean it has to be a part of the final trail system,” I was a little confused. It costs money to build trails, so when something is there for free, we always include it. But some of those trails are actually old logging roads put in temporarily to get the lumber out. Long-term maintenance and challenging ATV riding was not considered when they were built. As I look back at those very trails, we spend more money and effort keeping them open than we do on other trails. I think Dick could see the light bulb image clicking on above my head. Tom Crimmins asked the attendees, “Which is safer, a one-way trail system or two-way?” The obvious answer was a one-way system. In reality, most ATV accidents are one vehicle, and more accidents occur when the riders think that it’s okay to go faster. Riders are more cautious when there may be another vehicle coming around the bend. The conference continually challenged conventional wisdom and gave great information and examples to help educate all

the attendees. The first day of classroom time was filled with great information, as well as many visual examples from trails systems all over the U.S. The second day was a visit to a local trail system, where we walked the trails and identified real Pennsylvania problems and talked about various ways to address them. The last day was back to the classroom, where the presenters identified all the resources available so that attendees can go
forth and build better trails. Thanks to this conference, I have a new appreciation for trail issues. I now recognize problems that stem from rider abuse versus water damage. I can also come up with simple solutions that alleviate the problem quickly, as well as the complex solutions that prevent them from reoccurring. I’m very proud of the trail map and the signage at our club, but even that was covered in this conference, and I know our signage can and will get better.

What’s In Your Winch? By Dave Miller, Lehigh Valley ATV Association We all hope this kind of scenario never happens: You’re out on your favorite trail system and you need to use your winch for any one of several reasons. Could be you sunk your quad in a deceptively deep mud hole, ended up “off the trail” unexpectedly and can’t drive the machine back to the twin track under its own power, or maybe you need to help one of your fellow riders extract his machine from similar circumstances. You try to power out your winch cable…and nothing happens! You try to use the free-spool selector to pull some cable, but that’s not working either. Suddenly, it dawns on you that it’s been months, maybe YEARS, since you’ve actually used your winch. And now, in your moment of need, your winch is useless. If any of that sounds familiar, it will likely be small (if any) consolation to know that it does happen…a lot! Many winch-equipped machine riders take it for granted that their winch will always work on demand and run the way it’s supposed to. However, several factors (alone or in combination) can stall your winch when you need it most. Some of this information can be picked up from the better owner’s manuals out there, but, hey, who actually reads those things? Checking the winch should be one of those “pre-ride” inspection points before we hit the trail, but one many of us neglect it. Next time you ride, check your free-spool selector (if so equipped) to be sure the line (braided cable or synthetic rope) will pull freely from the spool. Next, check your in/out switch to check winch operation. Feeding just a few inches of cable and pulling it back should confirm basic readiness. Front-mounted winches see a lot of dust, mud and water, and few of them are completely sealed against these elements. After months or years of neglect, your winch’s gear sets can become impacted with enough grit, grime and mud to either lock up your planetary gear sets or rust them fast with the same end result: it won’t run when you need it! I recently found this out the hard way after using my Outlander’s Warn 2.5ci
winch to pull a stranded rider’s quad up a rocky slope at Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. As I was reeling the cable in to pull both our machines up the rock-strewn trail, the electric motor was making a loud howling sound. At home, when I decided to disassemble the winch to figure out what the problem was, I was amazed at how much grime had packed into the planetary gears and housings! It was a miracle it ran at all after six years of neglect. Plus, most of the cable had been undisturbed on the spool for so long, it was crusted together too. A couple of hours washing the parts in solvent, followed by a flushing with carburetor cleaner, got everything clean again, and the gear sets went back together after being packed with wheel bearing grease to increase longevity. Before you decide to tackle a winch cleanup project like this, assess your comfort level with electric motors (which is all a winch really is). The armature and brushes, along with the permanent magnets in the motor housing, most likely need the crud cleaned out of them as well. There are small springs and bearings involved that require care and attention during cleaning as well as proper reassembly. Once you’ve got all the heavy-duty parts cleaned and reassembled, if your in/out switch still gets no results, it’s probably time to trouble-shoot the in/out switch itself or the contactor (also called a solenoid by some manufacturers). Most cases of a non-operating winch can be remedied by following the above steps, and a little elbow, wheel bearing grease, and possibly some common tools can save hundreds of dollars on the cost of a new winch. If you get really stuck after getting started, search for some how-to videos on your favorite internet search engine.

Mountain Ridge ATV Trails – Park Review By: Tom Pickup So this month’s journey took the Rec Rider Crew to Mountain Ridge ATV Trails, located in Central City Pennsylvania. We loaded up our Triton Trailer, packed the Suburban full, topped off our GS500 chase bike, and were off! To the hills of Central City we headed. Upon arriving, the first thing we saw were windmills! These were HUGE 250-foot-tall white windmills ... all over the property. These things are massive! We spent a good bit of time there admiring the operating mechanics. It is truly an impressive site to watch them move to catch the wind. The park sits atop of one of the many rolling hills that make up the Somerset County landscape. This provides awesome views of the valleys below, one of which is the memorial site for Flight 93. So, we swung by the office, met all the wonderful guys and gals, signed all the papers, and went over the rules and were shown our campsite. The fun had begun! With camp set up, we decided to get out on the trails and see what Mountain Ridge had to offer, and we were not disappointed! Our first journey led us down Shamrock, a medium rated trail. Mountain Ridge has three levels of difficulty designated by the color of the trail marker, and trails are directional. As we blasted down the Shamrock, the views were incredible. Sprawling open fields draped in a setting sun provided some much-needed relaxation after a several hours behind the wheel of the Suburban. Then we remembered—setting sun means dark soon, and there is no night riding unless it is guided by the staff! Oops. Back at camp, we decided to take a walk around and visit other riders. We quickly found out that Rockin’ Randy is one of the toughest trails, and Big John is muddy. Both trails are black trails, meaning extremely difficult. You could quickly tell that everybody really enjoyed the park. Everybody had a trail they liked, including the kids. The next day, we fired up our machines and were off to explore every inch of the 2,500 acres. We have to say that Mountain Ridge has lots to offer everybody, from side x sides to dirtbikes. We turned lap after lap on the motocross track and really enjoyed the big downhill! Woohooo! The terrain consisted of brown, hard-packed dirt with a loose top coating of rocks of all shapes and sizes. There are trails that are littered with Subaru-sized rocks that snake up into the hills of the park, as well as mud! They had a nice variety to test every level of rider and provide a great experience. At the end of the day, we had another great riding experience and saw more incredible sites. We met alot of great people along the way: Kim and Shuey, Sara and Jess, Hunter and all the staff at Mountain Ridge! If you get the opportunity to visit this park, check it out. It is well worth it. The trails were great, the views spectacular, and the company wonderful! This is truly a place worth visiting. Check them out at www.mountainridgeatvtrails.com.

Eighteenth Annual Seven Mountains Dual Sport By Denny Mann The 24th of June was the 18th running of the Seven Mountains Dual Sport, and what a great event it was. Over the past three years, the Seven Mountains Dual Sport has been hosted by three different groups, and it’s remarkable that each group has improved on its predecessors. The first 16 events were hosted by the York County Chapter of PaTRA, who made the Seven Mountains Dual Sport possible. Then SMCC hosted the 17th, adding the chicken dinner at lunch, the Enduro cross, and finally the best gas stop at any dual sport. Now, with the Centre County Chapter of PaTRA at the helm, the dual sport riders saw less blacktop by moving the gas stop, and for the first time the addition of a separate Adventure Tour complete with more difficult options. According to Steve Bottiger, one of the original PaTRA Centre County Chapter members, this was the 18th straight Seven Mountains event without rain. So dust wasn’t new for the event, but I did miss the beauty of the blooming Mountain Laurel, which peaked several weeks earlier. This year’s event was a true showcase of the state-owned and PaTRAmaintained Dual Sport Trail System in Bald Eagle State Forest. So often at dual sport events, the host organizations will state that the trails used for the event are not to be ridden at any other time. That was not the case with the 2012 Seven Mountains Dual Sport. Every trail that was used is open for public use during the riding season, and PaTRA hopes everyone will come back to enjoy this public trail system. As many of you may know, the riding season may change as of September 2012 to match the time restraints of the ATV Trail Systems in State Forests across Pennsylvania. If the Bald Eagle District Forester adopts the seasonal changes, both Seven Mountains and Shade Mountain riding parks will lose five months of trail riding each year. PaTRA and PaOHV are fighting this seasonal change and need rider support. This was the reason for the mandatory membership to PaTRA for those who rode the 2012 Seven Mountains Dual Sport. Yet, the additional fees for the 18th running didn’t affect the attendance. With the addition of 30 adventure riders to the 150 dual sport riders, attendance was quite good. I spoke to many of the attendees, and everyone had high praise for the event. The Centre County Chapter had course workers at all of the route options to assist pre-riders checking the course an hour ahead of the participants and two sag trucks at opposite ends of the event for disabled motorcycles. What a commitment to safety! I can’t wait to see what next year has in store. The Seven Mountains Dual Sport trail system is the brainchild of PaTRA, whose focus is to keep the only dual sport trail system in Pennsylvania open for our enjoyment. PaTRA membership fees will pay for trail maintenance and the fight for keeping trails open. For more details, read the letter from PaTRA Director David Whiteman at the end of this article. Also, visit the DCNR website, www. dcnr.pa.gov, or http://www.patrailriders.org/ for PaTRA dual sport trail maps. Remember: always ride safely and legally by staying off closed trails.
Mission Statement for PaTRA To ensure that the Seven Mountains and Shade Mountain motorcycle trail systems remain a legal trail system. To improve the development, planning, maintenance and construction of sustainable trails, with approval and consent of DCNR, to better meet the needs of the riding public and to reduce conflicts between recreational, community, and environmental stakeholders. Dear PaTRA Members: If you enjoyed today’s event, please take a minute to drop the Bald Eagle State Forest a thank-you note. The Bald Eagle has the only legal trail system in the Commonwealth that includes the trails you may have ridden today or the Shade Mountain trail system. The address is as follows: Bald Eagle State Forrest Attn: Amy G. Griffith 18865 Old Turnpike Road Milmont, PA 17845-9376 Also, let Amy know how important it is to you and your family to be able to ride year-round. The idea of closing the trail system completely after Labor Day weekend is not fair. Let her know that a reduced riding schedule in the fall based on the various hunting seasons allowed in the forest makes sense to reduce conflicts but that you do not want to lose your ability to enjoy the forest on Sundays, and we want access to all roads regardless of the season. We are also open to your comments and ideas to make our Dual Sport Event better and welcome your ideas on how we as an organization can be a strong force in protecting our trails system. You can also help by going to our website occasionally to see when there is scheduled trail maintenance to be done and volunteer to help. Your comments can be sent to my email address at dwhite4508@aol.com.

Round 1 of the AMA/Husqvarna National Dual Sport Series • June 2-3, 2012, Mill Hall, PA By: Chris Borger The 22nd annual Durty Dabbers Dual Sport was held June 2 and 3 in Mill Hall, Pa. For many years, the Durty Dabbers club has stepped up to provide one of the finest dual sport trail ride events in the country. The club membership puts forth a huge effort for this event, and the results are a fantastic weekend riding some of the best trails in the central Pennsylvania region. The event begins on Friday evening with the traditional sign-up and social hours at G-Brick Motorsports in Mill Hall. The riders are always treated to nice snacks and drinks in addition to getting their rider packets and GPS downloads. G-Brick Motorsports (formally Williamson Honda) is a longtime sponsor and supporter of this event. Their hospitality is always appreciated. New this year was the Husqvarna sponsorship of the National Series, and the Yamaha sponsorship of the National Adventure Riding Series. Husqvarna held a demo ride session Friday and Saturday at the event, with several test bikes on site to ride. The Saturday ride began at 11 a.m. and ran late into the afternoon hours. The area had been somewhat dry, but a Friday evening rainstorm dropped 3 inches of rain in as many hours and made for some perfect course conditions all weekend. The Saturday event had several sections of awesome trail alternates, with some new trail sections and some different routing for this year. The layout of the course is well done, with gravel park roads transfering you to each trail section, resets, and scenic views, as well. The traditional Saturday evening dinner was very well done, and as always, the club’s trials riders put on an amazing trials demonstration at the dinner. Every rider who attended got a very nice prize at the dinner courtesy of the event sponsors and the club. Weather conditions were perfect, and it was indeed a fine day of riding. The Sunday ride began at 9 a.m., and most riders were back by mid- to late afternoon. The Sunday course was awesome—miles of great trail consisting of rocky single track, technical ATV trail, fast sections of loamy woods, rocky fire roads, and the famous creek crossing. This year, with the heavy rain, the current was much stronger, and several riders went for the big swim. A couple of small showers came up throughout the day, but overall the conditions were outstanding. The Sunday lunch is a gut buster, with large heavy amounts of pasta, meatballs, cake and drinks, all served up by the Chapman Township Fire Department, Company 1 at North Bend. Each year, these fine folks from Company 1 open their station to the riders for the huge meal. The station is always a welcome site during this event. The Sunday route also includes a stop at the Hyner Ridge overlook, several smaller creek crossings, and a long, winding, rocky trail down the mountain back to town to the finish. The course runs about 100 miles each day, with several resets, gas stops, scenic views, lunch stops, and lots of great trail action all day. Five hundred forty riders attend this year’s event, and all were treated to a fantastic weekend of riding and eating. The Durty Dabbers club is first rate, and their efforts are very much appreciated by all. In addition to being a nationaly known dual sport club, they are also a premier trials club with several longtime members and national champions. The club was just recently awarded the AMA Recreational Off-Road Organizer Award in Las Vegas. Many thanks to the Durty Dabbers club, all their sponsors, Husqvarna for their demo ride weekend, the Pennsylvania DCNR, and the local community for all their support. Check out the club at their website, www.durtydabbers.com, for upcoming events and updates.

BMER PA State Harescramble Series June 17, 2012 By: Chris Banks After battling terrible weather the last two years, this year we were rewarded….big time!! With 80 degree weather, low humidity, and no heavy rain the couple of weeks leading up to the race, it was as close to perfect as you could hope for. With a relatively new track due to floods and lack of races, we had 5.8 miles of dirt. A sand hole here, a mud hole over there, but the rest was just awesome dirt. The 68 peewee and youth motorcycle and quads started at 9 a.m. After them, around 147 motorcycles started at 11:00 a.m. and finished up their two hour, plus one lap race before the 92 quads took off and ran for an hour and a half, plus a lap. There was nothing but praise about the track. I, myself, had the opportunity to do the sweep after the motorcycles, and after their time on the track, I could not believe how awesome it still was. The one section coming out of the woods into the field section and the other going back into the woods were the only “rutted” sections, other than that the track was awesome. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the scoring system went old school, and I mean old school! We brought out the clipboards and paper. We had about fifteen members stand there in the exhaust-filled tents with the sun beating in the sides eating dust and listening to some perfectly tuned and some not-so-perfectly tuned machines come through scoring. But you know what? Not one complaint or protest by the riders or the scorers. Please send praises to our members that did such a great job!! Clean up went very quickly and most of the members got right to work pulling stakes and ribbon out of the fields, pulling the arrows out of the woods and picking up trash in the parking area. While that was going on, we had a couple others firing up the grills for a well deserved cookout for all that helped out. Profitable….I don’t think so. But to be involved with such a great event that is a part of the AMA, District 6 and the Pennsylvania State HareScramble Series makes all the hard work worth it. The track was so good that I cannot wait for Sunday, August 26th, which will be round 10. Hope to see all motorcycle and quad enthusiasts there. ‘Cause if the event is even half as good as this last one, it is going to be one great track! After that, for all the Dual Sport riders, some of which actually raced this HareScramble, our Lawton 100 will be held Sunday,September 23rd. We are trying the fall this year, instead of the spring. Check out www.bmer.org or become a friend on Facebook @ Back Mountain Enduro Riders to keep up with this season’s action.

Volunteering 101: Working Well With Others
By Dave Miller, Lehigh Valley ATV Association There has already been a brief club biography about Lehigh Valley ATV Association (LVATV) in the first issue of Rec Rider, but we didn’t really take the time to explain one of the most important activities of our club. I am referring to our cooperative trail maintenance efforts with various segments of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). When the club was formed in March of 1985, the founding members were very involved with DCNR in both Delaware and Sproul state forests. Those early relationships have endured throughout the years and have recently expanded into Tiadaghton State Forest. LVATV members assisted DCNR personnel with many important aspects of establishing the trail system that is now known as Whiskey Springs in Sproul. And, due to their proximity to the Lehigh Valley, there were many rides and clean-up details held at the Maple Run and Burnt Mills tracts in Delaware State Forest. Essentially, the clean-up program consists of LVATV organizing members to travel to the trail systems to “brush” the trails by trimming over-hanging branches and cutting any fallen trees that either block trails or present hazards to riders. Our main effort takes place just days before the ATV trails open on Memorial Day weekend, and our riders are provided with a Letter of Authorization from the appropriate DCNR forestry office so that we have the necessary permission to ride on the closed trails. In 2011, our members arrived at Whiskey Springs for our typical
Thursday start to the clean-up effort, and by day’s end, we had covered all of the major trails and removed all the serious obstacles. However, that night the Renovo area experienced near hurricane level straight line winds that wreaked havoc on the trees near the trails. Our members ventured out Friday morning to wrap up what we thought would be an easy day of trimming, which turned into the most significant amount of tree clearing we’ve performed since the trails were first cleared. There were literally dozens of large hardwoods and pines across the major trails! Luckily, several members had chainsaws, bar oil and fuel on their quads, and we worked in teams rechecking the trails we had done such a nice job on just 24 hours earlier. By the time we finished on Friday, we had reopened all the major trails and had run out of fuel for the saws! According to forest officials, if it had not been for the effort of LVATV, they would have had no option but to close the system until DCNR maintenance workers could get the trees removed. That would have meant a LOT of unhappy riders for the Memorial Day weekend! For 2012, LVATV has reached out to DCNR in Tiadaghton State Forest to perform the same type of community service work on the Haneyville ATV trail system. Our club also stays in close contact with DCNR personnel in Delaware State Forest to assist their maintenance crews as well. The ATV riding community can expect to hear about more proposed restrictions, or even trail system closures, due to the bleak fiscal situation facing state and federal budgets, which oversee recreation trail riding. Now, more than ever, legislatures are scrutinizing where every dollar is being spent, and I know first-hand that DCNR has experienced significant budget cuts. Fewer dollars for trail maintenance will present the opportunity for more clubs to volunteer their help under the Conservation Volunteer Program already in place in DCNR. If your club isn’t already involved in helping to offset the budget cuts by volunteering your time and effort, get in touch with your local DCNR office to see which projects they need help with. Pitching in makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something, not the least of which might be helping to preserve the future of off-road riding.

By: Al Sain Indian Creek Valley (ICV) ATV Club held their first Open House in June, and it was a great success. One hundred and five guests took the opportunity to ride the private trail system and enjoy a free lunch (15 people decided to join that day). Over 40 club members were there to share the day with the guests and get some riding in as well. The weather was perfect, and recent grooming of the trails pleased the guests and members. Three weeks of ‘dozer work eliminated many of the nuisance rocks and puddles, and a lot of diversion ditches were added or cleaned up to keep the runoff from damaging the trails. Mark Lynch, a board member and safety instructor for ASI and DCNR, held a training session before the Open House, and the students used the club trails to practice their new and updated skills. If you would like more info about ICV ATV Club, check out their extensive website www.icvatvclub.com. You can view a video and slideshow of the Open House as well as find details pertaining to their trips to other riding areas.

White Rose MC Pro AMA Hillclimbs
|
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2012 27
June 3, 2012 • By: Bill Kaster It’s that time of the year again. The boys and girls of AMA PRO Hillclimbing are back at it, and we just so happened to be at round number one. White Rose Motorcycle Club in Jefferson, Pa., was the spot for the 2012 series opener. This was not only the first race of the season, but also the first race of White Rose‘s 60th Anniversary year. What a day it was. There is nothing like getting out of your car and smelling that delicious Nitro methane in the sweet summer air. Now, for me personally, this was my first ever hillclimb event, so I was, naturally, pretty excited. The smells, the sounds, and the atmosphere- it was all amazing. There had to be 500 motorcycles in the parking lot alone. What a cool way to spend the day; not only did participants get to see some amazing racing, but they also got to enjoy an awesome bike ride on a beautiful day. But enough about that, let’s talk racing. The day started off a bit sad with the eight-time AMA Hillclimbing champion “Tiger” Strank announcing his retirement at the end of this season. After that, there was only one thing left to do...start them engines! With 32 riders and 44 bikes entered amongst three classes, it was looking like a good day. The first class on the hill was the pro sport class. These bikes are 400 - 450cc four strokes with little modifications. Competing in only his second race ever in the pro sport class, Chris Chartier Jr. took the win with a time of 9.15 seconds. These guys were so close that only two-hundredths of a second separated positions first through third on the podium. Then, out came the extreme class; these guys are running highly modified 451cc - 700cc bikes. This class was loud. Most riders were running “crotch rocket” motors, and boy, did they move up that hill. Nathan Redmann finished atop this class with a streaking time of 7.418. Finally, it was the big guys’ turn. We are talking about the 701cc unlimited class. These bikes are built on the “if it fits, let’s put it in” method. The largest of the bikes was an 1840cc Harley Davidson. These bikes screamed up the hill with so much power that they needed to let off the throttle just so they didn’t launch off the top of the hill. The champion of the 2011 AMA PRO Unlimited Class, Jay Sallstrom, came out on fire, posting a time of 7.064, which was just too fast for any of the other riders in the class. What an exciting day it was at White Rose Motorcycle Club’s 2012 Pro AMA Hillclimbs. The hillclimbers will be returning in September, so make sure you get out and see them, and tell them Rec Rider sent you!!! Get the details at: www.whiterosemc.org

Help PaTRA Protect the Trails in the Bald Eagle State Forest! The PA Trail Riders Association was formed in 1973, and it has been a loyal supporter of PaOHV since its inception. Their membership is passionate about the trail system in the Bald Eagle State Forest in central Pennsylvania, and the volunteer effort they put forth in the forest is legendary. The improvements PaTRA is making to the system, and other factors, are leading to a substantial increase in the number of riders enjoying the trails. Unfortunately, complaints from other users have increased as well. PaTRA recently met with the DCNR to discuss the work PaTRA members have been doing in the Seven Mountains/Shade Mountain areas. It was then that they learned of the user conflict issue. PaTRA is working closely with DCNR and Bald Eagle staff members to solve the problem, and they ask that the following guidelines be taken seriously: 1. Be mindful of other user groups, particularly hunters during the season. 2. Non-licensed dirt bikers riding the Shade Mountain trails need to make certain their exhaust system is quiet and is equipped with a U.S. Forest System approved spark arrester. 3. The phrase PaTRA lives by is “Ride With Respect.” Make sure you do the same. Motorcyclists currently have no restrictions on when they can ride in the Bald Eagle State Forest. Keep it that way by respecting the rights of others who share the forest with you. Thank you! To learn more about PaTRA, their history, their events, and the great things they do, go to www.patrailriders.org.

Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure
|
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2012 33
By: Wayne Yahn President - Central Mountains ATV Association Inc. women raving about how great the portable potties were. I guess they even had carpet in them. All along the trail while traveling here, the riders enjoyed beautiful Mountain Laurel blooming at its peak and a warm and sunny morning with streaks of sunshine sneaking through the canopy of trees that covered part of the trail. It was a perfect day to ride. The Renovo Fire Company had its presence at each stop as well as at Heritage Park. They provided communications, emergency equipment for the ride and a rescue service for any machines that might break down. They also served breakfast at the Renovo Fire Hall, starting at 6 a.m. CMATVA provided a free breakfast at the fire hall for all members of the club that showed their membership card. The Beech Creek Fire Company also had a very cool, specialized emergency vehicle at the trailhead to help out in case there was a need. The DCNR was also there, supporting the ride relays and securing all trails from regular vehicle traffic that might present a hazard. They were well organized and did a very nice job. Thanks guys! Upon the return of the relays back to Heritage Park, there awaited a wonderful barbecued chicken dinner, with all sorts of extras and a drink. The chicken was not only donated but also cooked to perfection on the spot by Frank Mills, the local magistrate. He did a great job. The BMC Relay Team had a 50/50 Drawing, but I don’t remember who won it; I just know it wasn’t me. This year’s ride was very successful for the BMC Relay Team. We had nearly three times as many participants as we had last year. Things ran quite smoothly, and everyone seemed happy with the results. We will, of course, critique this ride and make improvements where we can and continue to improve the overall ride in areas where we need improvement. I hope that everyone who attended the ATV Cruise had a fun and enjoyable day and will come back and join us next year for Ride #3. It will continue to support the Bucktail Medical Center’s Relay Team in their support of the search for a cure for cancer. Ride Smart – Ride Safe
S753298
The second annual Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure took place on June 9, 2012, in Renovo, Pa. Renovo is a small former railroad community nestled among the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. The idea of having such an ATV event began with the dreams of the Central Mountains ATV Association Inc. and their efforts to develop an ATV trail that would start in another area and terminate in Renovo. CMATVA ultimately joined up with the Bucktail Medical Center’s Relay Team for the fight against cancer to organize an annual ride through the beautiful mountains, trails, and forestry roads in the area. The end result was the Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure. The Western Clinton Sportsman’s Association and Central Mountains ATV Association helped the BMC Relay Team provide insurance for the day’s event. The Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure is now also an event that is sanctioned by the AMA. Putting this event on required a lot of work and arrangements to be made by the BMC Relay Team, along with the efforts of many other people and organizations, which are critical to the day’s success. Thanks to the many very dedicated people involved, everything eventually fell right into place. You all did a great job. The morning started with each operator and passenger checking in and/or registering. The BMC Relay Team handled the registrations and check-ins and presented each participant with a ride T-shirt. As each person checked in, they were assigned to a ride relay that would consist of approximately 25 machines. Each relay would be led by an experienced ride guide from CMATVA. The first relay departed Heritage Park, the center for the event, at 9 a.m. It was escorted by the Renovo Police Department through Renovo and South Renovo to assure rider safety while we were on the main blacktop roads. The next three relays departed, one at a time, with 20 minutes between them, with the same process. The first stop on the ride was on Coon Run Road, about 12 or 13 miles along the way, for a 15-minute rest break. Each relay that followed would do the same thing. The next stop was going to be at the halfway point, the trailhead to the Bloody Skillet ATV Trail. After arriving at the trailhead, there was a half-hour break to rest, eat, and drink. I actually heard both men and

SPORTIN’ with SPROCKET becomes unbearable, and anything above 40 degrees is unbearable to me, so you can just guess where my thoughts are always. My doctor diagnosed me with Attention Deficit Disorder because he says I have trouble focusing on any one task, but I am sure it is just the “I Can’t Stand The Heat Syndrome.” When I was just a small lad, I, like millions of other youngsters, asked my mom where babies come from. Being the biggest wealth of knowledge that I knew, she would tell me that the stork brought me. Now, not wanting to believe that my mom did not really know the answer, I grew to believe this great information she gave to me. As I grew older, and wiser, I figured it all out! But not wanting to upset my mom, I never told her. I did not want her to think that I did not want her as my mother. But as time continued on, I knew that darn stork must have gotten tired of carrying my big butt and dropped me in good ole York, Pennsylvania, and I was for certain that there is an Eskimo without a permanent tan up there in Alaska somewhere that absolutely hates it! Anyway, back to the boat and the blazing heat. I figured I would do some fishing here, while the family splashes all
S753081
Hello again from the southern end of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania! Actually, I guess I am located somewhere in the middle, but who’s keeping track anyway! In the middle of Huntingdon County, in the middle of Lake Raystown, bobbing up and down with the wakes that the other boats are making. Ahh, what a great day out of the office. Wait a minute; this is my office, the great outdoors! Most of the time, I am writing from my front porch office at the camp. Well today I am writing from my mobile office, which just happens to be a pontoon boat anchored in a quiet little cove on Raystown Lake. The family is with me, and they are enjoying the day swimming and splashing all around while I slave away over this laptop writing to you all. The only thing that I am worried about right now is keeping the sweat droplets off the keyboard. It is the beginning of July, and the temperature on this day is a sweltering 98 degrees. I can remember just a few months ago when I was out in the great state of Montana, standing in five feet of snow, in my shorts, at minus 10 degrees. Wow, what a thought. This is what I think of when the weather

about, but I have come to the conclusion that it is even too hot for the fish. The reason for this conclusion was the fact that I actually got a bite, but by the time I got the fish in the boat, it was a fish stick ready to eat! It was pretty tasty, but I would have traded it for a frozen fish pop anytime. I was fishing for lake trout and stripers when I caught that fish stick. Fishing on the lake has been a little slow for this time of the year. The temperature of the water is up, plus the boat traffic and fishing pressure has increased. Speaking of boat traffic, if you ever want some good, wholesome, busta-gut-laughing good time, go to the local boat ramp, set up a chair and your snacks, and watch the action. I have never before seen so many goofballs in one place. Once I saw a guy launch his jet ski through the back window of his truck because he did not have his trailer in the water far enough. When his ski got to the edge of the trailer, he gunned the ski just as a huge wave came from behind and the ski rode the wave right through the window. To make matters worse, he started yelling at his girlfriend because she didn’t help. Just this weekend, as I was preparing my pontoon
boat for the water, the guy behind me walked up and asked me how much longer it would be till I was ready to put my boat in the water. My wife had to explain to him (I guess he was blind) that we will be putting our boat in as soon as the two vehicles with boats in front of us put theirs in! Jeeesh, some people! Anyway, boat ramp fun is the best. Try it sometime; you will definitely get a kick out of it. For the next month or so, I plan on just hanging out here in the water right about the neckline to beat the heat. I am preparing for the final quad race at Rocket Raceway for the year, and then it will be onto Rock Run for the Fisher ATV Reunion in August. If you happen to be there too, see if you can find me. If you do, introduce yourself; heck, I may mention you in a future story. Until next time, keep those wheels spinning and all four on the ground!
