Welcome to RARA!

What’s New?

If you haven’t been to RARA lately you should stop in and check us out. We have been quite busy improving the community center @500 E. 2nd St. and we have a lot more planned for 2023-2025!

Here are a few highlights of what we have done and what is to come:

2022

• Roofs - All four roofs on 500 E. 2nd St were replaced.

• Painting - Exterior and Interior have been completely repainted.

• Dance Studio viewing monitors and cameras have been upgraded to 65” monitors with 4K viewing cameras.

2023

• Enhanced security systems upgrades to ensure a safer enviroment for guests.

• Main office reception is moving across the lobby to create an additional classroom space for programming.

• ADA automatic doors are being installed on the bathrooms and main entrance to allow wheelchairs and strollers better access.

• Indoor playscape is being replaced and expanded, creating more opportunities for play on the 1st level with features directed at 6M - 3Yr olds.

• Wayfinding signage is being installed throughout the community center.

• Covered front porch area will be installed to allow for quicker pickup & transition for guests.

• New RARA website will be finished with some cool new features like the community calender, sign up for text notifications, and the ability to change the website into a 100 different languages or use ADA modifiers to make it more accessible for your use.

• Purchase outdoor movie system to begin the summer Movies in the Park series.

2024

• Parking lot renovations to increase capacity and traffic flow.

• Lighting upgrades inside and out.

• Improvements to Halbach and Jaycee Fields.

2025

• Fieldhouse upgrades including air conditioning, batting cages, and outside deck seating.

Iplay@RARA Scholarship Fund

As the community provider for recreation our goal is to offer opportunities for all. In 2023, we have added a 1% fee to all transactions to help build our scholarship fund. This will allow us to set aside approximately $15,000 per year to help at minimum 130 community members who are experiencing hardship participate in activities we offer. You can view quarterly the scholarship revenue earned and the awards given by clicking HERE

On behalf of RARA and the community we serve, these funds provide much more than monetary subsidy. They are the foundation that builds community and creates memories that span a lifetime. We sincerely thank you for this investment in equity and inclusion for all of the residents of Rochester and Rochester Hills.

The RARA Board is a policy making board comprised of 7 members, representing the governmental agencies that established our interlocal agreement, and individuals from each of the communities in which we serve.

The board meets on the third Wednesday of each month, 5:00PM at the RARA offices, 500 E Second St. Rochester, MI 48307.

About Us

Resident/Non-Resident:

To receive the resident rate you must reside within the cities of Rochester or Rochester Hills. RARA is funded through a millage collected in the city of Rochester Hills and a comparable fee in the city of Rochester. Please see the map for what is considered “resident” for RARA’s purposes.

Residency is not connected with the Rochester School District. Residency is determined by where you pay your city taxes. Non Residents pay an additional 20%, capped at $20 per program in addition to the resident rate.

Notice to Participants:

Participants must recognize that all activities of a physical nature involve some risk, and by registering for a class/activity of this nature there is an assumption of risk by the participants. RARA is dedicated to providing safe equipment as well as qualified staff for all participants. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of RARA to:

Contact emergency medical services to perform first aid, and when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to the hospital. Reach the parent/guardian/emergency contact as soon as the situation allows.

Cancellation of Activities: RARA activities at community schools are canceled when school activities are canceled. Activities at 500E 2nd St along with other offsite locations will continue as scheduled unless otherwise posted. In addition, cancellation of programs will be determined by program supervisors as seen fit.

Adaptive Programs

RARA offers a variety of recreation adaptive programs are designed to promote physical, social, and emotional well-being for individuals with special needs. These programs include art, diners club, movie night out, WERQ, music, fitness, sports and more. Art programs provide opportunities for creative expression, while diners club and movie night out offer social opportunities. WERQ provides physical fitness and skill development through dance and exercise. Music programs provide a supportive environment for learning and playing instruments, while fitness and sports programs offer adaptive equipment and instruction for physical activity and skill development in various sports.

Art Programs

Paint a Miracle Art Studio is uniquely designed to offer people living with disabilities and other challenges rich art opportunities developed to ignite the artist’s imagination and self-discovery. Studio classes are offered for ages pre-primary through adult. Emphasis is placed on individual process, creativity, and expression. Parents/aides are welcome to attend to help.

Movie Night Out

WERQ

WERQ Instructors build a playlist based on trend setting, appropriate music. This is an exercise class. The workout is nonstop with repetitive athletic moves and fresh dance steps, so you get the best sweat.

Adaptive Softball

This softball league is designed for high functioning persons with developmental disabilities. The team will begin with practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then, they will transition to games against neighboring communities on Thursdays. This is slow pitch softball rules with low impact/injury balls, tees are available if needed. Players and responsible for their own transportation to practices and games. Shirts and hats will be given. A detailed scheduled will be provided when the season gets closer, but our first day of practice will be on May 2. Home field is Halbach Field.

Learn babysitting, pet sitting, and CPR/First Ait, in person or virtually. These classes teach valuable skills for caring for others, The benefits include increased confidence and job opportunities, as well as the ability to handle unexpected situations. The courses provide knowledge on how to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies for children and animals.

Early Childhood Programs

Do you like art, sports, judo, and camps? Well, these activities are not only fun but also really good for you!

When you do art, you get to use your imagination, be creative, and make cool things. Sports are awesome for your body, making you strong, healthy, and happy. Judo helps you learn how to protect yourself and be respectful to others. And at camp, you get to meet new friends, try new things, and have an adventure!

The best part is that all of these activities can help you grow. You’ll learn important skills like teamwork, leadership, self-confidence, and respect. You’ll also get to experience different cultures and ideas, which will make you appreciate the world around you even more.

Parents must attend these classes with their child. Our instructor, Ms. Z previously spent 25 years teaching in Elementary Schools and has a Masters in Teaching.

This program is a developmentally appropriate introductory fine and gross motor skills program for children 2-3 years old. Steam Camps

Challenge Island is an award-winning STEAM enrichment program where kids work together in tribes to solve fun, hands-on “challenges” which teach them about STEAM fundamentals, crosscurricular topics, plus important success skills like creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and much more. Each of our summer camps are packed with activities and learning, and include lots of positive reinforcement and social interaction in a safe setting. Race Across the Rainforest STEAM Camp

Race into an unforgettable journey through the amazing Amazon Rainforest with Challenge Island book characters Daniel, Joy, Kimani and DaVinci. You and your STEAM Team will zip through the jungle’s action-packed layers, taking on challenges inspired by the rainforest’s awesome animal inhabitants: from the playful monkeys to the hungry jaguars to the slithering anacondas on the dark and creepy forest floor. We’ll also read The Race Across Anaconda Swamp together each day, and each child will receive a copy of the book, including bonus activities to continue the adventure at home. Self Defense for Children

If someone wants to hurt our children, they won’t choose a time or a place with witnesses. That means no parents, no teachers, no policemen, just our children and the predator. The safety of our children will depend on their ability to recognize a threat and respond effectively. This fun, interactive and age appropriate workshop teaches essential, lifesaving information about the threats facing our children, strategies for prevention and real-world techniques designed to reduce their risk of abductions, assaults and other forms of violence. But most of all, these programs teach students that they have the right to be safe, that no one has the right to hurt them and that their life is worth protecting. Caricature Workshop

Is your child ready to learn to sketch cartoon faces quickly? Artist Andrew Sigman breaks down the process, making it fun and easy. Before class begins, he will do a souvenir drawing of each participant. Next, there will be a short class showing how to visualize the face in a simplified way, what is needed to capture a person’s likeness, and tips so one can make fast decisions. The remainder of time will be spent putting this new knowledge into practice, with participants drawing as many caricatures as they can with supportive and helpful critiques. Kids will leave with increased knowledge about drawing, a caricature of themselves, and the caricatures they created on cardstock and in plastic sleeves. All material will be provided.

Welcome to our fun and engaging youth dance programs! Our programs are designed to offer a range of beginner classes in tap, tumble, ballet, jazz, hip hop, pom, and more. These programs provide your child with the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive and creative environment. Each class has its unique style and benefits, providing your child with the opportunity to explore different dance forms and develop various skills.

In our tap classes, children learn to create rhythms and sounds with their feet. We focus on basic tap techniques and rhythms, helping children develop coordination, musicality, and confidence.

Our tumble classes teach young children basic tumbling skills such as forward rolls, cartwheels, and handstands. We also help them develop strength, flexibility, and balance through fun exercises and activities.

Ballet classes are a great way for children to learn grace, poise, and discipline. We teach basic ballet positions and movements and focus on developing technique, posture, and musicality. Ballet also helps children build strength, flexibility, and coordination.

In jazz classes, children learn to move to upbeat and energetic music. We teach basic jazz movements and techniques, helping children develop coordination, rhythm, and style. Jazz dance also helps children build endurance and strength.

Our hip hop classes teach children the latest dance moves and help them develop their own unique style. We teach basic hip hop techniques such as popping, locking, and breaking, and help children build confidence and creativity.

In pom classes, children learn basic pom movements such as jumps, kicks, and turns. We also help them develop teamwork, coordination, and showmanship, making it an excellent class for children who love to cheer and dance.

At our dance program, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to explore and express themselves through dance. Our experienced and caring instructors provide a safe and welcoming environment where kids can learn and grow at their own pace. Kid Pitch

This league follows a modified kid pitch rule. This division practices on Tuesday evenings and plays games on Thursday evenings. Come learn baseball fundamentals with current and former Stoney Creek High School players and current coaching staff. Players, grades 4th-9th, will be grouped by age and skill level. Viking Football

This football camp introduces campers to the fundamentals, skills, drills and terminology that will be used at the middle and high school level. Campers will gain a better understanding of offensive and defensive positions, formations and plays, as well as learn proper techniques for catching, running, and throwing the football, as well as blocking and form tackling. On Thursday, all campers will participate in a Punt/Pass/ Kick contest and a 7 on 7 competitive tournament. Bring cleats and water bottle.

Pistons Camp

This is “Detroit Basketball” at its best. For boys and girls of all skill levels, Pistons Academy camps are designed to teach kids how to be a champion both on and off the basketball court. Camp will consist of fundamental skill-development in the morning and NBA-themed games and competitions during the afternoon. In addition to becoming a better basketball player, campers will enjoy guest appearances from current and/or former Pistons players, a high-flying dunk performance by the Pistons Extreme Team, and a spectacular awards ceremony on the final day of camp. Our one-of-a kind coaching staff is excited to deliver an experience that only the Detroit Pistons can provide! All players will receive a Pistons reversible jersey as well as 2 free tickets to a 2023-24 Pistons home game at Little Caesar’s Arena. Camps will sell out so be sure to register early.

This camp is meant for anyone interested in either learning about wrestling or want to advance their skills in wrestling. No experience is required. We will offer instruction designed specifically for beginning, intermediate, and advanced wrestlers. We will teach stance, takedowns, reversals, pinning combinations, and other skills related to success on the wrestling mat. We will also talk about training and nutrition. Time will be built into the camp to offer kids the opportunity to play games and participate in other fun activities. On the last day of camp, we will have a simulated dual meet between campers.

Cornhole

This Cornhole League is a fun and social way to spend your Mondays this summer. Running from May 15th, 2023 to July 17th, 2023, the league is open to players of all skill levels and takes place at RARA. Each week teams will play a best 5 match against another team. The season will conclude with a single elimination Tournament. Registration will open on April 3rd for $50 per person, equipment provided by RARA. Don’t miss your chance to have some fun, meet new people, and play cornhole!

Kid Parent Cornhole

In this league, parents and kids can team up and compete together in the classic outdoor game of cornhole! This league is a perfect opportunity for parents and kids to spend quality time together while also getting some exercise and having fun. The league will run for 8 weeks and will be held on Wednesdays 5/17/237/19/23 at RARA. Each team will consist of one parent and one child, and there will be a single elimination tournament at the end of the season to determine the league champion. Rochester Avon Recreation Authority (RARA) and Mayor Bryan K. Barnett have partnered with Major League Baseball to host a FREE Play Ball event. Boys and girls ages 6-14 will have the chance to compete and move on to regional and national events, potentially even winning a trip to the world series!
