The journey of light emanates from the snowy fells and blue sky, the quiet twilight, the darkness of midwinter. It is a time of rest in Lapland.

Tunturit ja niiden väliset laaksot uinuvat lumivaipan alla. Sen ymmärtää myös ihmismieli, joka rauhoittuu katsomaan ja kokemaan luonnon harmoniaa. Vaikka ihminen on muuttanut vuosisatojen kuluessa alkuperäistä Lapin maisemaa, tuntureita, metsiä ja jokia, täällä voi vielä tuntea sen, mitä ennen meitä on ollut. 16
The fells and valleys sleep under a blanket of snow. This is also comprehended by man, who quiets down to observe and experience the harmony of nature. Although over the centuries man has changed Lapland’s original landscape, fells, forests, and rivers, here it is still possible to sense what has been here before us. 17

Talvi on pitkä ja lumi peittää tunturit toukokuuhun asti. Alkutalvesta se tarttuu oksiin ja pukee puut valkoisiin vaatteisiin, pysäyttää kaiken kiireen. Syystalven kuutamo valaisee metsän ja laaksossa virtaavan joen kirkkaasti kuin päivällä.

Winter is long and snow covers the fells until May. In early winter it sticks to the branches and cloaks the trees in white; it ends all hurries. The early winter moonlight illuminates the forest and the river flowing in the valley as if it were day.

Lapin kesä tulee nopeasti. Keskiyön aurinko valaisee jokilaaksossa leijuvan sumun, ja valon matka muuttaa maiseman aina uudestaan. Kaikki ihmeelliset kukat kukkivat taas tuntureilla ja laaksoissa. Harvinainen neidonkenkä kasvaa metsän suojassa tumman virran varrella.

Lapland’s summer comes quickly. The midnight sun illuminates the fog floating in the river valley, and the journey of light repeatedly transforms the landscape. Once again, all the amazing flowers bloom on the fells and in the valleys. The rare calypso grows along a dark stream in the shelter of the forest.

In spring the rapids roil white already in the twilight of early morning. Then the bright summer light begins its journey toward the colors of autumn. Nature is clothed in her best before the coming of snow. Light still glows in the sky, but soon darkness again covers the landscape. 47

Lapin taikaa ovat valot ja värit, joita luonto tarjoaa vuodenaikojen vaihtuessa. Synkkä syksyinen metsä on veli valkoiselle lumelle, harmaa sumu sisko talven syvälle siniselle. Lapin mystiset valot, revontulet, valaisevat taivaan joskus useammin, joskus harvemmin.
The lights and colors that nature offers with the changing seasons are the charms of Lapland. The dark autumn forest is the brother of the white snow cover; the gray fog is the sister of the deep blue sky of winter. Lapland’s mystical lights – aurora borealis – illuminate the sky, sometimes frequently and at other times less often.

Lappi on tehty kalliosta ja kivestä, joka on kestänyt vuosituhannesta toiseen. Aikoinaan täällä kohosi korkeita vuoria, mutta jääkausi höyläsi ne turvallisen pyöreiksi tuntureiksi. Kulku ei kuitenkaan ole helppoa, jos louhikkoon eksyy. Joet ovat uurtaneet väylänsä kovaankin kallioon, ja ne virtaavat joskus villisti vaahdoten, mutta useimmiten hiljaa ja harkitusti.
Lapland is made of bedrock and stones, which have endured for millennia. Long ago there were high mountains here, but the Ice Age wore them down to pleasantly rounded fells. Travel is not easy, though, if one wanders into craggy land. The rivers have cut their path even through hard bedrock; they flow sometimes roiling white, but most often slowly and calmly.

Puhdas, raikas vesi ja kesän voimakas valo kasvattavat Lapin karun maaperän kasvit, puut ja koko vihreän metsän. Tuntureilta sulavat vedet kerääntyvät laaksoissa oleviin soihin, missä ne ravitsevat luontoa ja kasvattavat herkullisia marjoja. Myös tunturijärvet keräävät vesiä huostaansa, kunnes ne taas jatkavat matkaansa kohti merta.
Fresh, clear water and the bright light of summer allow Lapland’s barren earth to grow plants, trees, and green forests. Meltwater from the fells accumulates in bogs in the valleys, where it nourishes nature and allows delicious berries to grow. The fell lakes also collect streams of water, which then continue on their way to the sea.

Valo on elämän perusta niin kasveille, eläimille kuin ihmisille. Aamuisin se herättää luonnon ja antaa sille ravintoa. Se muuttaa maiseman joskus pieneksi hetkeksi, kuten erämaalammen ylle kaartuva värikäs sateenkaari. Parhaiten valo näkyy ennen kuin yön pimeys koittaa. Ne ovat kavereita keskenään.

Light is the source of life for flora, fauna, and man. In the morning it wakens and nourishes nature. At times it transforms the landscape for a brief moment, like a colorful rainbow arching over a wilderness pond. Light is visible the best just before the dark of night. Light and night are friends to each other.

Tämä maisemavalokuvistaan tunnettu valokuvaaja on ikuistanut Pohjois-Suomen luontoa Kuusamossa ja Lapissa jo 30 vuotta. Monien luontoon liittyvien aiheiden lisäksi hän on kuvannut ihmisiä, elinkeinoja ja matkailua niin Suomessa kuin ulkomaillakin. Viime vuosikymmeninä Kohonen on kuvannut Venäjän Siperiassa ja Kaukoidässä sekä Intiassa ja Kiinassa. Kohosen kymmenestä kuvateoksesta tunnetuin on seitsemällä kielellä julkaistu Valoa erämaassa, josta tehdyt valokuvanäyttelyt ovat kiertäneet maailmalla useiden vuosien ajan. Lisäksi Kohonen on tehnyt useita luontokuvakirjoja ja -videoesityksiä, joilla ulkoasianministeriö on esitellyt Suomen luontoa ulkomailla. Kohosen ja hänen yrityksensä Rapid Riverin tuotantoon voi tutustua osoitteessa www.rapidriver.fi. Kohonen on Valtion valokuvataidetoimikunnan jäsen. Tauno Kohonen, recognized for his photos of landscapes, has photographed northern Finland’s nature in Kuusamo and Lapland for 30 years already. In addition to many topics related to nature, he has also photographed people, livelihoods, and tourism in both Finland and abroad. During the past decades Kohonen has taken photos in Russia’s Siberia and in India and China in the Far East. Best known of Kohonen’s ten photo works is Light in the wilderness, published in seven languages. Photo exhibits based on this work have traveled around the world for a number of years. Kohonen has also produced several nature photo works and video presentations with which the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has presented Finland’s nature abroad.
