Oriental Music Re-Development Project was one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by the past members of the Oriental Music Society as a part of the T150 Sesquicentennial Anniversary of our Alma Mater. The OMS T150 Project was a part of the TCK Co-Curricular Enrichment Initiative which aims to upgrade aesthetic and cultural program at Trinity, which eventually would lead to the enculturation of a student in an attempt to prepare the student to become a professional. Hence, an array of development interventions were set in place for the Oriental Music Society, namely;
1. Relocation of the Music Room
2. Upgrading to a concept of an “Oriental Music Arena and Studio”
3. Much needed replenishment of musical instruments.
The past memebers of the Oriental Music Society with the aid of many well-wishers raised funds worth of LKR 7.2 Million in a record time in the spirit of acheiving the set goals.
This publication is a compilation of the entire OMS T150 Project from day one to the end. This publication aims to document and preserve information on the T150 Project for the benefit of future generations. Documentation of the project was considered an important part of the project by all parties involved in the project since such attempt is of great importance in nemours aspects.
My sincere gratitude to Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara (Principal), Mr. Manoj Lanerolle, Dr. Suranjaya Dharmadasa, Mr. Sameera Senerath, Mr. Chamila Maddegoda and members of the OMS T150 Committee for their commitment and continuous helping hand rendered for the compilation of this publication.

I love walking in the rain. On a partially overcast day in the month of December 2021, I took a walk up to what was known in our days as ‘Siberia’ – a name rarely used today. It was mostly to revisit those memorable experiences I had at the Oriental Music Society. When I was passing the Oriental Music room that evening, I was shocked to see the state of the music room. I was also aware of the state of aesthetics in general at Trinity College; Kandyan dancing, Western music, drama and Carnatic music. Following day, I met Chamila and shared my concerns with him. The first step was for Chamila to send me a list of instruments, as there was an urgent need to replenish the instruments. During the second week in January 2022, I got in touch with Manoj. My last interaction with him was fifteen years ago. As always Manoj was hyper interested with this initiative and the project was initiated with a letter from the principal to the past members of the OM society. Let me quote from my letter,
“May I wish all of you a very meaningful T150 Sesquicentennial Anniversary of our Alma Mater. As I have repeatedly mentioned in my recent public appearances, the Hallmark of Trinity College is the unique ability to form a responsible citizen and an erudite professional. This process of formation is a series of education interventions spanning over 14 years - a robust academic program, a co-curricular enrichment initiative that prepares the child for a future professional carrier and trademark Trinity Sports. During this anniversary year, we are taking every opportunity to upgrade aesthetic and cultural program as a part of the TCK Co-Curricular Enrichment Initiative.”
This project included multiple engagements, such as relocation of the music room and introducing the concept of an “Oriental Music Arena and Studio”, much needed replenishment of musical instruments, etc. With these interventions, we intend to house and manage a grand Eastern Orchestra and Classical Singing Group in this facility. Further, with this initiative we hope to assist the student to acquire professional qualifications in Eastern music.
From this point on the ever-dynamic Manoj Lanerolle, took charge of this project, in consultation with four or five others. With this, all members rallied together to see to the successful and grand completion of this noble endeavor. To my utter amazement, the scope of the project went further. Undoubtedly, in the 150 years of the history of Trinity College, this was the fastest fundraiser. Within the span of 28 days, the past musicians were able to collect 7.6 million, out of which approximately 4 million were spent on musical instruments. The passionate venture has now gifted Trinity with a fully functional Oriental Music Arena.

The OMS T150 project was initiated with intentions of purchasing new musical instruments for the Oriental Music Society, for which the Society and the Master in-charge Mr. Chamila Maddegoda were in dire need. Hence, the list of instruments was compiled and forwarded to the OMS T150 Committee from the College.
The Committee did an estimation for the requested instruments and was shared with the membership. As result of the generous donations from the Old Boys and well wishes, new musical instruments worth of LKR 4.6 million were donated.
In this process, it is worth noting the immense contribution rendered by Mr. Charudaththe Ilangasinghe, who is a Senior Lecturer at University of Visual & Performing Arts and also a member of the OMS T150 Committee, in preparing cost estimates and providing technical consultation to purchase the best instruments available.
The project was initiated as result of the need to relocate the Oriental Music room. The new location was decided as the Upper-Ryde House dormitory, located at the upper floor of Ryde House building, built during the early 1900s (Ryde House which is the third Senior Boarding House at Trinity, was started in 1911 and named after Principal Rev. R.W. Ryde.). The building has grand gesture with arched doorways and windows, with decorated columns.
The Principal and the T150 committee were determined to convert the location into a unique learning space that would be a breeding ground for professional level musicians; a studio capturing the authentic Sri Lankan identity and culture. However, the project also had to be completed within a comparatively low budget.
The design team proposed the concept “The Story + A Studio” in an attempt to preserve both intangible and tangible heritage value, yet at the same time to capture the vision put forward by the Principal and the T150 Committee.
Marriage between cultures has been very much a Trinity tradition. It had been noted the Trinity culture itself is a ‘marriage between the local roots and what was best in the west’. In fact, the great Trinity Chapel stands exemplifying this very notion on which Trinity was found upon. Many of the buildings in Trinity belong to different eras yet stand in harmony.
Continuing the same tradition, the refurbishment project also attempted to bring union where the nostalgia and the pride of the Ryde house remains, in fact enhanced by design, while the functions of the Oriental Music Society which has relatively young history and music related activities occupy the same space. The project is yet another chapter in ‘The Trinity Story’. In fact, the project was titled as ‘Refurbishment of Upper-Ryde House_New Oriental Music Studio Arena’ in the spirit of acknowledging the heritage value and the historical transformation of the Ryde House.
The white walls, retouched timber floor and the king posts standing out in the space, showcase the majesty and the historic value which this century old domitary space inherits. The rear wall was made to a feature wall with historically significant monuments and artifacts displayed. The entire space itself is intended to be celebrated as a museum; a museum which not only preserves the monuments and artifacts, but also the memory of generations of Trinitians who had considered this place their home.
The measured drawings of the Ryde House building was also documented as part of the project and handed over to Trinity College Archives, as we attempt to preserve the long history of the College.
In an attempt to bring life to the vision put forward by the Principal and the OMS T150 Committee for the new Oriental Music Studio, the team embraced the idea to design ‘A Studio; building to build capacities’. Therefore, design decisions were taken with a deeper intellectual understanding of a learning environment. Hence, ‘what was not to be done’ was the foudation for ‘what was to be done’. The space was refurbished in such a manner, where the space has the capacity to absorb and facilitate a robust learning process and culture. The design allows the teachers and the students to engage in many activities varying from teaching, learning, orchestra and singing practices, artistic work and events. At the same time, the timber floor and cement finished floor with high wear and tear qualities allows the users to freely move around and engage in different activities where they retain certain autonomy within the space. It also accommodates mistakes and mischief of student life which are important aspects in a learning environment.
The partition walls were removed to allow natural light and cross ventilation. The walls (except the feature wall) and the ceiling were painted in white to brighten up the space. The old dark paints on timber work were removed revealing the original timber grain and the softness. These design decisions were aimed to create a pleasant learning environment for the students. An utility area with a sink and a worktop was added, projecting outwards from the building, which were identified as essential components of a studio learning environment which would accommodate the student activities. Even the ability to allow students to make a cup of tea has its utility and merit to a greater extent in addition to the modern facilities such as the smart board.
The cupboards for the storage of new musical instruments were a generous donation from Mr. Damitha Kalekorala of Techwood (Pvt) ltd which were specifically designed for the purpose. Both new and old furniture was moved in. The old Committee table and the chairs were made part of the design, since they are more than pieces of furniture, but important monuments and part of the memory of the Society (The Story) carrying names and tags of generations of Trinitians/ committees who had left behind their memory/ mark. New chairs also were bought with the donations raised. The design allows the room to have multiple furniture arrangements as needed from time to time to suite different activities.
The initial architectural proposal which had a seperate audio recording section (as Phase II) was revised due to financial limitation.

A very pleasant day for each and everyone of you. It is my beautiful privilege to welcome all of you to this colourful event. Thank you for being with us today. On behalf of our Oriental Music Society, I sincerely thank and acknowledge everyone of you who extended us help to making this event a grand success. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara, the Vice Principal Mr. Krishanthan Anthony Daas, the Co-Vice Principal Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, Prefect of Games Mr. Shane de Silva, for the guidance and support given to us in numerous ways, to make this musical show ‘mrmqrl werUqu’ a reality.
We are fortunate to have such an enthusiastic, committed and talented Master in-charge to drive us towards making this event remarkable, Mr. Chamila Maddegoda; And my teachers, please accept our heartfelt gratitude and thank you for believing in us. It gives me immense pleasure to welcome the Old Boys who are here with us today to make this occasion more colourful by guiding us. The support and encouragement of the parents throughout the entire event was truly remarkable; they stood by us like rocks. I am more than happy to welcome you all to this wonderful evening. And I am delighted to welcome my fellow Trinitians to this occasion.
We are proud to present you, with ‘mrmqrl werUqu’ which is organised by the newly appointed committee. As we are all aware, events of this nature reduce stress and helps boost mental health. The Oriental Music Society believes that ‘mrmqrl werUqu’ is a great opportunity for you. The show also marks the reunion of our Society and appreciate the support given by the teachers and our parents. Thank you once again for being here with us and I hope you will enjoy the hard work of the students, children and my dear brothers had put into this program.
It is with great privilege that I come before you today to address the Musical Extravaganza ‘mrmqrl werUqu’ organized by the Oriental Music Society to celebrate the commissioning of the new ‘Oriental Music Area’.
Early January, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara, approached the Past Students of the Oriental Music Society with a request from Mr. Chamila Meddegoda, (Master in Charge of Oriental Music Society) for help in purchasing much-needed Musical Instruments.
We embarked on this project immediately by taking estimates from suppliers and appointing members of our team for technical and professional assistance. The organizing committee spearheaded the fund collection. Initiated a robust program that made it possible for us to collect necessary funding within 28 days, a record in the 150-year history of our Alma Mater.
Despite all odds, with Sri Lanka going through its worst economic, political; and social unrest, with Schools being closed for over 2 years due to Covid 19 pandemic, the past students with unstinted support from the school administration were able to purchase instruments and commence the renovations of the new Arena.
I’m extremely humbled to inform you all that today marks a day to remember as we commission the New Oriental Music Area and Instruments to our Alma Mater.
To my dear students at Trinity, these Instruments and the facility are for you. We are confident that you, under the able guidance of Mr. Chamila Meddegoda will be able to take Oriental Music to the pinnacle at Trinity and obtain professionalism in Music and aesthetics.
I take this opportunity to thank Rev. Fr Principal, the administrative team, past students and their families, and well-wishers for their support in making this dream project a reality.
Last, but not least, on behalf of the past students of the Oriental Music Society, I would like to present this Memento to Rev. Fr. Arajiya Jayasundara to commemorate the commissioning of the “Oriental Music Arena”
Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen
