One of the latest openings in Antigua is the impressive El Ángelus. Encompassing Woodstudio, and Tiovivo it’s the brainchild of Carlos Woods. Originally from Guatemala City, Carlos Woods is a third-generation antiquarian whose family emigrated from England.
El Ángelus
by Carlos Woods
At Woodstudio, you’ll find antiques from every part of the world focusing on Guatemalan colonial pieces as well as some striking contemporary art. When asked to describe his collection, Carlos takes time to consider, then replies ‘eclectic’. Incredibly, the whole collection has been curated by Carlos over the past forty years; he was just seventeen when his life as an antiquarian began. As a recognised interior
designer, Carlos has transformed many houses in both Guatemala City and Antigua.
To fully appreciate the collection, take time and relax at Tiovivio his enchanting coffee and tea café. Carlos named the café Tiovivo (carousel in English) in honour of the 19th-century carousel that takes pride of place in the garden.
It’s a lovely space to relax, listen to light jazz, be surrounded by one of Guatemala’s most eclectic art collections of which every item is for sale to the discerning collector. And do check out the Imperial Suite, featuring some of Carlos Woods’ colonial and contemporary pieces which can be found on Airbnb.

Letter from the Publisher
“To our readers,
Whether you’re visiting Antigua or are “living in the land of eternal spring,” as you peruse these pages, you would be hard-pressed not to appreciate why so many visitors fall in love with Antigua and never leave!
And to underline that sentiment, on page 16, Harris Whitbeck, formerly a correspondent on CNN whom Qué Pasa interviewed for My Antigua, said that “Antigua holds a very special place in my heart and my life”.
If outdoor pursuits are your thing, check out Exploring Antigua’s Hidden Trails on page 24, written by serial adrenaline junkie Christoph Ege.
As I write, the season of Lent and Holy Week is fast approaching. Qué Pasa is honoured that the renowned Guatemalan writer and photographer Luis F Noriega shares his majestic photos and very personal experiences with our readers. Turn to page 36 to read A Sacred Tradition Through the Lens of Faith and Photography of Luis F. Noriega.
Love them or hate them, visitors and residents alike are often shaken awake at night by the sound of ‘explosions. To learn more about this tradition, read “Everyone Hates the Bombas,” by Julissa Carrillo on page 50.
Antigua is synonymous with coffee. But rather than just sipping a latte in one of Antigua’s many coffee shops, take advantage of your stay, turn to page 53, check out It’s Coffee Time, and discover some awesome Antigua coffee experiences.
To Guatemalan cooking. Sofia Letona takes you through the steps to prepare one its most famous sauces, Adobado-the Magic of Seeds and Chillies on page 74. Elizabeth Bell told me recently that in her opinion, St. Augustin Church and Convent is now her favourite museum in Antigua. Read Fragments from the Past On page 105, and you’ll discover why.
On page 111, check out Mid-Life Crisis, the so-called “Dad Band “formed back in 2018, that has been rocking the hotspots of Antigua ever since.
Next to business. Dr Modesto José Armando Salazar-Dieguez explains “Why a Corporation is Necessary for a Foreigner in Antigua Guatemala,” on page 119.
As in every issue, Qué Pasa gifts an article to an NGO or Foundation to showcase their tireless work in Guatemala. On page 127, pore over Safe Passage Marks 25 Years of Impact in Guatemala. It’s quite a read!
Qué Pasa has always been the magazine for what’s going on in Antigua. So read on, and discover some great new restaurants, and some old favourites. Plus bars, where to find some live music, shopping ideas, and outdoor experiences.
Finally, perhaps it’s time to check out the Qué Pasa website. With over 400 articles to enjoy and a calendar of events, it’s just a QR scan away!”

My Antigua
with Harris Whitbeck
Harris Whitbeck is currently the Director General of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT). He is a Guatemalan journalist and television producer with a long career in international media such as CNN, CGTN America, and Al Jazeera. He was the host of the first three seasons of the Latin American version of the reality show “The Amazing Race,” as well as being the author of “Guatemala Inédita,” and “Guatemala Revealed”.
So, we at Qué Pasa decided that Harris Whitbeck would be the perfect person to interview about his personal experiences of La Antigua.
When did you first visit La Antigua?
I don’t remember exactly when the first time I visited La Antigua was, as I was just a very young child back then. But it was always a place my family used to visit, especially on weekends. Antigua has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
Is it true that La Antigua holds a special place in your heart?
Without a doubt, La Antigua holds a very special place in my heart and in my life. It’s one of those places that, even though I’ve visited many times, always has something new to discover. Like many other beautiful places in Guatemala, it has a unique emotional connection that goes beyond the visual; it’s the history, the culture, and the people that make it so special.
Can you name a few things that you love about La Antigua?
There are many things I love about La Antigua that it’s hard to choose just a few. First, the history that fills every corner. Its cobblestone streets give the feeling of traveling back in time. But also, the colors of the house facades, the volcanoes surrounding it, and the peace you feel while walking through the city.
From your experience of La Antigua can you suggest some must-do’s for visitors?
La Antigua has so many beautiful places and such a wide cultural offering that it’s hard to limit it to just a few. However, something I would always recommend is walking through the streets and admiring the colonial architecture and churches; enjoying a cup of coffee in the afternoon; and visiting the markets, where, in addition to finding beautiful handicrafts, you can learn more about Guatemalan culture. Each corner has its own charm, so the route, places to visit, or things to do will depend on what each visitor is looking for. That’s the magic of Antigua—there are places and activities for every taste.
How have you seen La Antigua change over the years?
In recent years, I’ve noticed an evolution, especially when it comes to what’s on offer for the tourist. The number of establishments, restaurants, hotels, and activities has increased, allowing more people to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
When it comes to Guatemala, many consider La Antigua as the “Jewel in the crown”. Do you think that La Antigua deserves this accolade and what can the authorities on both a local and national level be doing to improve the “Antigua experience”?
La Antigua is undoubtedly one of the most iconic gems of Guatemala, but it’s also important to recognize that the country has many other wonderful places that deserve to be visited. Without a doubt, La Antigua has earned its place due to its beauty, history, and culture. To enhance the “Antigua experience”, it’s crucial that tourism development be sustainable and respect its heritage. Supporting the preservation of historic buildings and ensuring that the local community benefits from tourism is essential.

Exploring Antigua’s Hidden Trails: A Mountain Biker’s Paradise
Written by Christoph Ege
Photos by Christoph Ege , Old Town Outfitters and Carmona Trails
For over 20 years, I’ve called Antigua, Guatemala, my home. As a Swiss expat, I arrived here ready for adventure. Over the years, I’ve worked in tourism, launched businesses in the industry, and most importantly, immersed myself in Guatemala’s natural beauty and adventures and culture. Early on, I discovered that Guatemala is a paradise for mountain biking, a passion that has only grown as I’ve explored the endless trails that crisscross this incredible landscape. I’ve taken my bike up Acatenango Volcano (not recommended), ridden through the thick jungle to the Mayan ruins of El Mirador and Rio Azul, and biked the high plateaus of the Cuchumatanes. So many different landscapes in a relatively small country!
My love for mountain biking was sparked by a fellow Swiss, Beat (RIP), who had been riding in Guatemala since the 90s. He founded a travel company here (www.viaventure.com) offering high-end bike adventures and travel. His enthusiasm, and working with them as an adventure guide, inspired my own exploration, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
The Trails Around Antigua: Never ending fun!
Antigua’s trails are a treasure trove for mountain biking. Woven into the countryside by generations of local campesinos, these paths connect villages, farms, and forests in a way that makes for epic biking. You can ride for days without retracing your steps, constantly stumbling upon new routes with different challenges and amazing views!
Whether you’re descending the rocky paths of Volcán de Agua, navigating the forested trails up around El Hato, or winding through coffee plantations, every ride is unique.
Some of my favorite rides lie above the village of San Cristóbal El Bajo: “El Precipicio.” This downhill ride is pure magic, with its single-track winding through massive agave plants and its beautiful forests; the perfect mix of flowy sections and technical challenges that test your skills.
More amazing trails can be found above San Antonio Aguas Calientes- after a hard uphill push you get to enjoy a flowy trail with all 3 volcanoes: Agua, Acatenango and Fuego in full view!
Respecting the local Trail Keepers
One of the things that I always enjoy riding in Guatemala is meeting the local farmers who use these trails daily. Their smiles and friendly greetings are a reminder of the deep connection between the land and its people. As riders, it’s important to remember that we are visitors here—giving farmers the right of way and showing respect for their space ensures that these trails remain a shared place for everyone.
Community Rides
Mountain biking in Antigua isn’t just a solo sport; it’s a vibrant community activity that connects locals and visitors alike. A great way to dive in is by joining Old Town Outfitters’ Thursday community rides, a weekly event open to all.
No bike? No problem! Old Town rents them for a minimal fee, making it easy to join. These rides go beyond exercise; they are a chance to discover trails, meet great people, and see how a shared love for biking bridges cultural and language barriers.
True to its name, Thirsty Thursday ends with the tradition of sharing a cold beer or drink—perfect for winding down and sharing stories.
Empowering Local Women Through Mountain Biking
Antigua’s mountain biking scene isn’t just about riding; it’s also about empowering people. A great example of this is Christa, an ambassador for World Ride, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women access the world of mountain biking. World Ride provides bikes, training, and opportunities for women to work in the biking industry.
Mountain biking in Antigua isn’t just a solo sport; it’s a vibrant community activity that connects locals and visitors alike.
Christa’s work is a testament to the influence of mountain biking. Her efforts have inspired other women to take up the sport both as a hobby and a profession. As a result, there are more women guiding bike trips now than ever!
Safety
Safety, of course, is a priority when riding around Antigua, and I’m glad to say that in over 20 years of exploring these trails, I’ve never had a safety issue. If you’re new to the region, it’s a good idea to ride with a guide on your first outings. A guide can not only help you navigate the trails and familiarize you with the terrain but also take you on safe routes where you won’t encounter any bandidos- even if the chance of that is close to zero.
Carmona Trails
For those seeking a more structured mountain biking adventure, Carmona Trails offers well-maintained paths for all skill levels. Their setup ensures a safe and enjoyable ride, perfect for both beginners and seasoned bikers. They also offer shuttle rides up the mountain for more downhill and enduro- oriented rides.

Another great example of the community spirit of the local mountain bike scene is “Bici Taller El Gallo” who exemplifies this spirit by organizing races and providing support for local riders who might not have the funds to compete in their, and other events. You will find the owner Don Joel clearing paths for his race just for the love of the sport on any given Sunday morning!
My restaurant, Toko Baru, along with Old Town Outfitters and other local businesses, proudly supports their mission whenever we can.
I strongly encourage anyone to try this amazing sport. And who knows, you might just fall in love with it, as I did, one ride at a time!

The Panchoy Valley has so much to offer. For the active amongst you, perhaps a hike up to one of the summits of the three volcanoes that overlook Antigua. Birdwatching has become increasingly popular. Finca El Pilar and Cerro de la Cruz are walkable from the centre of Antigua and Finca Carmona with its hiking trails is another option.
Many of the villages around Antigua are worth visiting. San Juan del Obispo is a pretty village and is known for its nispero (loquat) orchards. The church is also worth a visit. Check out the weaving museum in San Miguel Dueñas and discover the petroglyphs at Finca Urias. Or maybe chill in the artisanal pools of Pa’ Siwan of Santa Catarina Barahona. But you really must visit Pastores, the home of handmade leather boots and other leather goods. It’s a treat!
Other excellent options include tastings at Cerveceria Catorce, the artisanal brewery, a trip to Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm or a spa day at the magical Earth Lodge.

Holy Week in Antigua Guatemala
A Sacred Tradition Through the Lens of Faith and Photography of Luis F. Noriega
Written
Growing up in a Catholic family, Semana Santa in Antigua was more than just a holiday for me. It was about reflection, devotion, and keeping traditions alive. The processions were serious. Incense filled the air. Colorful carpets spread across cobblestone streets. This made everything feel special. After my wife passed away in 2010, Holy Week became even more important. I turned to photography to deal with my grief. At first, it was just for me. But soon, it became my way to capture the beauty and spirit of Semana Santa.
In 2022, UNESCO recognized Holy Week in Antigua as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Antigua’s Holy Week is one of the most amazing religious celebrations. Huge floats, called andas, show scenes from the Bible, with Jesus at the center. These are carried by devoted men and women known as cucuruchos and devotas. The andas are heavy, but the weight also represents faith and sacrifice. Under them, intricate alfombras—colorful carpets made of sawdust, flowers, and pine needles— are arranged in stunning designs. These

Incense filled the air. Colorful carpets spread across cobblestone streets. This made everything feel special.
Photography helped me capture these special moments. My work has been shown in exhibitions in places like Rome, the Vatican, Guatemala City, and Antigua Guatemala. In 2021, I earned second place in the Foto Sacra competition. The following year, I won first place. These milestones strengthened my bond with religious photography.

Each day of Semana Santa has its own traditions. Palm Sunday starts with a reenactment of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. Each day following has processions and quiet moments. Maundy Thursday is for the visitation of seven churches in a tradition called Los Siete Sagrarios. Good Friday is the most emotional day, filled with reenactments of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. After the sorrow of Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday brings joy, celebrating the Resurrection with music and festivities.

The Macadamia Nut Project
Come check out this family run macadamia production farm, forestry project and restaurant. Open since 1989, the Valhalla Macadamia Farm has been promoting sustainable farming with macadamia trees in Guatemala and Central America by donating macadamia seedlings to indigenous farmers for over 30 years. Valhalla is the result of the dream and vision of its founders, Lawrence and Emilia Gottschamer, whose passion for the preservation of our environment is apparent in every corner of the farm and led them to their desire to contribute in a meaningful way to a solution. Planting macadamia trees addresses directly important issues that affect our environment today, such as deforestation, provision of income and food security. By promoting planting macadamia in Guatemala and since 2015 in Nicaragua, the Valhalla Macadamia Project aims to introduce macadamia and other productive projects to rural communities and create markets for innovative natural products focusing on
ecology and sustainability. The farm has also developed the agro-industrial practices they use to produce their own brand of macadamia nuts and nut-based products, all from the production of organically and sustainably grown macadamia nuts from their proprietary orchard.
At Valhalla Macadamia Farm you can also find a restaurant in an open-air setting, in the garden under the macadamia trees. Home to the famous macadamia pancakes and the tastiest macadamiasmoked ribs around we now offer delivery around Antigua. There is also a small SPA where you can program therapeutic as well as beauty treatments using macadamia nut oil, which is a very good moisturizing agent for skin.
Get a free tour of our orchard, sample macadamia nuts and chocolates, relax for a free facial and enjoy delicious food. Entrance is free and we are open every day.

“Everyone Hates The Bombas”
A Noisy Tradition in Antigua Guatemala
By Julissa Carrillo
I was born and raised in the La Merced neighbourhood. Waking up to firecrackers and bombas (mortars) has always been a reason for celebration and joy. Perhaps I made this connection when my grandparents came to wake us up with firecrackers early in the morning on our birthdays, a tradition that my cousins continue to do to this day. The bombas are a fundamental part of Chapin and religious traditions.
The tronadero (loud noise) is always present for holidays starting in the early morning hours, announcing a community’s joy and devotion. This custom divide the residents of Antigua: for some, it is an expression of faith and celebration, while for others it is an unavoidable nuisance.
Lighting bombas and cuetes (firecrackers generality for any pyrotechnic) during festivities is a strong component of popular religiosity. There is a belief that the noise is a way of honouring patron saints and warding off evil spirits. In addition, it is believed that the noise announces the presence of divinity and its protection towards the faithful.
For others, it is interpreted as a distant announcement of the celebration of a party, so that the sound and colours indicate to those who want to participate, where the meeting point is.
The origin of this tradition:
The tradition of firecrackers and fireworks isn’t new. Since colonial times, religious festivities in Guatemala have been accompanied by music, processions and firecrackers. This custom has its roots in European celebrations that were brought by the Spanish and adapted to local traditions. The use of firecrackers was consolidated as an indispensable practice for any religious celebration in Latin America and Guatemala was no exception.
The noise that identifies us:
Bombas and cuetes not only mark religious celebrations but also accompany national holidays and important events such as setting off firecrackers for the Antigua football team when they win a match. For many, this sound is a symbol of national identity and traditions that have passed down from generation to generation. However, noise can be a point of tension in Antigua, where residents and tourists seek tranquillity. That is why some suggest quieter alternatives as a cultural expression and celebration; and don’t disrupt sleep.
What is certain is that noise is something that identifies Guatemalan culture and is and has always been part of our folklore. But, if you are one of those who feel that fireworks ruin your moments of tranquillity, here are three recommendations to help cope with this tradition:
1.Life-saving headphones: Invest in noise-cancelling headphones and turn on a playlist of “Nature Sounds.” Who knows, maybe you’ll end up hearing birds instead of fireworks.
2.Wake up before the fireworks: If you can’t beat them, join them. Make yourself a nice cup of coffee and listen to the fireworks with a festive attitude. Maybe you’ll even end up enjoying the sunrise.
3.Move: When the sound makes your daily life impossible, you can always choose to move from Antigua, but bear in mind, that the bombas will find you wherever you live in Guatemala!
Whatever your position is regarding the bombas and cuetes, they are part of our history and continue to resonate like an echo to the celebrations that unite us Guatemalans.

THE STORY OF A FARM
25 years ago, when our family moved back to Guatemala, we decided that Antigua would offer a better quality of life for our kids. We moved into an old coffee farm that my grandfather had bought 50 years earlier, hoping it would offer a nice setting free of traffic and surrounded by beautiful volcanoes. We spent the first few weeks fixing up the house, and then turned our attention to the farm which had been producing coffee in a traditional way for decades.
Walking around, I asked the farm manager to show me the mill. The first room he showed me was the “bodega”. I was stunned by all the fertilizer bags which had skulls and bones on the labels. There were fungicides and herbicides and lots of WARNING signs splattered all over the place. I also witnessed the farm workers spraying these products on the plants while dressed in protective
clothing more suitable for lab workers in a high security operation.
Seeing all these chemicals, we met with our extended family and decided to go fully organic! We wanted to protect our farm associates from these harmful inputs, and our kids and the environment as well. It was not a financial decision. It was a decision that was aligned with our values of running a farm, and not harming others along the way.
We did the paperwork to become organically certified and after 4 years of soil regeneration, we exported our first container to Whole Foods in the United States. We felt really good about this decision and were surprised at how resilient nature can be when you stop harming it with artificial herbicides, fungicides, and the like. Immediately we started to see more birds, bees and butterflies all over the farm. The sounds in the morning were very loud, and as we got used to these early morning natural alarm clocks, we knew we had made the right decision.

Embark on this sensorial journey and be captivated by the magic of artisanal coffee in its purest form.
Many years ago, so legend says, in 6th century Ethiopia, a goatherder named Kaldi stumbled upon his wandering flock as they sampled berries from nearby bushes. Ordinarily sluggish, his goats whose scientific name is Capra Walie suddenly started dancing and jumping; (hence the phrase, “crazy like a goat”). After tasting several seeds himself, Kaldi discovered that the berries were the cause for the increased energy. It wasn’t long before coffee beans and their stimulating effect travelled far and wide to become one of the top 3 most consumed drinks around the globe.
Kaldi y Kapra is Antigua Guatemala’s first Coffee House with a perfect blend of Conscious Food and Drinks with Purpose. Besides enjoying some of Guatemala’s finest coffee you will be able to experience some fun yet integral workshops about Coffee Universe, Guatemalan Gastronomy along with Special Monthly Art & Cultural Workshops. These Bean-to-Cup workshops include coffee cupping, coffee roasting, and “latte art” all with our professional bilingual baristas.

Masil is Antigua’s only Korean restaurant, bringing authentic flavors and warm hospitality to the heart of the city. Owners Sejin and Ara, who first visited Antigua separately in the early 2000s, returned in 2019 to settle down with their children. In 2024, they opened Masil, inspired by the Korean word “Masil" meaning a stroll through the neighborhood to visit friends -perfectly reflecting their vision of community and connection.
Masil is proud to have received highly positive reviews on Google, a testament to its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. The restaurant’s clean, modern interior—designed by Dutch designer Machteld Oosterbaan—blends seamlessly with Antigua’s colonial charm, creating a cozy and inviting dining atmosphere.
The menu showcases healthy, home-style Korean dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, staying true to its motto: “Healthy yet tasty, just like home.” Every main dish is served with rice, the soup of the day, kimchi, and three traditional side dishes (banchan), offering a well-rounded and satisfying meal.
For starters, try a crispy Buchimgae (savory pancake) with seafood or kimchi, or enjoy Kimbap, Korean rice rolls filled with fresh vegetables and your choice of protein. For mains, savor Bulgogi Ssambap, Korea’s signature marinated beef dish served with lettuce wraps, or opt for the Bibimbap Original, a vibrant rice bowl topped with meat, shiitake mushrooms, vegetables, and a perfectly fried egg.
Masil is the perfect destination for those seeking authentic Korean flavors, hearty portions, and a welcoming dining experience.
And for those who want to bring a taste of Korea home, Masil also operates a Korean grocery store next door, stocked with imported favorites like instant ramen, rice wine, and snacks.

New York-Style Pizza: A Slice of the Big Apple
New York-style pizza is a city staple, known for its thin, foldable crust and classic flavors. Originating in the early 1900s, it was introduced by Italian immigrants, with Lombardi’s in Manhattan being the first pizzeria in 1905. Over time, this style evolved, becoming the go-to slice for New Yorkers and pizza lovers worldwide.
What makes New York-style pizza unique? First, the crust—thin and crisp, yet flexible enough to fold. It’s topped with a simple, tangy tomato sauce and low-moisture mozzarella, creating the perfect balance of flavors. The pies are typically 18 to 24 inches in diameter, with large, wide slices that are best eaten on the go. Traditional toppings include pepperoni, mushrooms, and sausage, but the classic plain cheese slice remains the most iconic.
A key ingredient? Many believe New York City’s water gives the dough its signature texture, making it nearly impossible to replicate elsewhere. Baked at high temperatures, the crust develops a delicious charred, smoky flavor, adding to its appeal.
Despite evolving trends, New York-style pizza remains timeless. Whether from a legendary pizzeria or a neighborhood slice shop, the experience is the same—grab a hot slice, fold it, and enjoy. Nothing beats the simplicity and tradition of a true NYC slice.

Some of our most popular pizzas are the Italian, the “Meathead” with sausage, pepperoni, ground beef, and bacon. THE MAGIC OF SEEDS AND CHILLIES
During your time in Antigua, you may have fallen in love with our famous Guatemalan food. It might have something to do with the wide variety of dishes, the comforting soups and stews and most of the sauces that result from the combination of traditional Latin American ingredients and everything brought to us from the old continent, like our most used spices.
One of the traditional dishes you need to add to your list of must-haves is adobado (adobo marinated). The word is used to describe a sauce, made out of sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, different kinds of chillies, our beloved tomatoes (which are included in most of our sauces, tomatillos (which we usually call miltomates) and achiote.
What is achiote? Achiote, also known as annatto, is a spice and colouring agent extracted from the seeds of the evergreen Bixa orellana shrub. The
seeds are typically dried and ground into a powder or formed into a paste when added to ingredients such as vinegar, garlic, and salt which gives the dish a reddish colour.
What is it about the sauce? It can both marinade chicken or pork perfectly and it is so rich and tasteful it can be served as a sauce on top. The traditional dish we refer to as “adobado” is made with pork but there’s no reason why chicken cannot be included.
Don’t worry, even though this sauce includes two kinds of chillies, the result isn’t spicy and it is perfect for all members of the family.
HOW TO PREPARE ADOBADO AT HOME
Serves 4
To prepare your very own adobado, the way you might find in a lot of restaurants and eateries in the markets, you will need:
3 pounds pork (cut into steaks)
1 ounce of pumpkin seeds
1 ounce sesame seeds
1 pound of onions
3 pounds of tomatoes
½ pound of green tomatoes, miltomates or tomatillos
1 red pepper
1 teaspoon of achiote
2 pasilla chiles and 2 guaque chiles
4 cloves of garlic
1/4 cup vinegar
1 teaspoon of oregano
½ teaspoon of cumin
3 cloves
A pinch of cinnamon
A teaspoon of allspice
Salt and pepper to taste
METHOD
Toast the seeds (pumpkin and sesame) in a pan. When they are golden brown remove them from the heat. Then brown the tomatoes, the miltomates, the onions, the pepper and the chiles for five or six minutes in a pan.
Next, remove from the pan, (except the chiles), add to a pot of water, and cook them until the tomatoes are soft Then add the chiles and let them soak for a while. Place in a blender with the achiote and vinegar and blend.
Then add 2 tablespoons of oil to the pot. Heat the oil and brown the steaks. Once browned pour in the mixture from the blender and add the salt, pepper, allspice, oregano, cumin and a pinch of cinnamon and let it simmer until the sauce is smooth and has reduced. Then serve.

Bru'd (pronounced “brewed”) is a coffee shop concept located right in the center of Antigua on Arch Street. Open from 6:30 am to 8 pm, it’s a great place to enjoy a latte, a bite to eat, and people watching.
Bru'd offers three types of cookies, two varieties of mousse, a carrot cake and chocolate covered carrot cake pops.
Bru’d is also a place for appreciating Mayan culture. The cafe displays more than 1,000 masks created
by the same artist from a small town outside of Chichicastenango.
Besides the sweets, enjoy delicious sandwiches and casseroles straight from the owner’s family cookbook, served with your choice of tomato and cucumber salad or seasonal chips (usually malanga).
The house coffee is a special blend from a farm located about 2km from Antigua; that has notes of both light and dark roast giving it a strong but smooth taste.
The craft beers are hard to miss but be sure to ask about the frozen limeade or cinnamon rolls.
New to Bru’d is the impressive second level. It has a lounge feel, a perfect spot to relax with friends over cocktails or catch up with work whilst using the free WIFI.
The new original menu merges Southern US gastronomy with Guatemalan ingredients and recipes. Sharing platters such as pork belly, avocado, and pickled radish on carbon activated bread or the roasted black grapes on cream cheese bruschetta with toasted sesame seeds, pinenuts with a balsamic reduction which is both pleasantly sweet and salty not only look good but are very tasty. Vegan options include the hummus, beets, avocado, and pickled onion bruschetta. For something a little spicier choose the Jalapeño Poppers!
From the desserts try the chocolate bananas. Imagine large chunks of frozen bananas covered with dark and white chocolate and sprinkled with dry fruit-it’s like a trip back to childhood!
Sitting on the second-level terrace is simply the finest place to enjoy one of Bru’d’s imaginative cocktails. The Smoked Old Fashioned which is a blend of bourbon, bitters, and cinnamon syrup with a twist of orange is divine.

For the aficionados of whisky and those who just fancy the odd dram, Whisky Den, now in its new location in Antigua has since 2011 been Guatemala’s only true whisky bar.
With a remarkable 170 Scotch whiskies to choose from, Whisky Den also has a focus on international whiskies from the United States, Japan, and Ireland as well as a huge full shelf of bourbon.
As Alvaro Leon, the owner of Whisky Den says, “Whisky is a long-term relationship probably with both ups and downs. It’s the reason and excuse to build and increase a strong community at The Whisky Den.”
But don’t think for one moment that the Whisky Den has a clubby stuffy feel. Far from that; it’s young, friendly, has a great bar, plays music from the eighties, and has live music some nights of the week.
If whisky is not your thing, then check out Whisky Den’s cocktails, especially the coffee cocktails as well as beers, wines, liquor, and soft drinks including non-alcoholic beers. As Whisky Den is also a coffee shop supporting local coffee farmers, you’ll always find freshly roasted coffee.
You don’t need to leave the Whisky Den hungry. Food options include the charcuterie board, German sausages, bretzels, BLT, and a Philly steak sandwich.
Finally, for those who long for a wee dram with a good book, check out La Sospecha, Whisky Den’s bookstore.

Founded in 2018 in the guest room of a band member’s house -where noise was welcome, and food and drinks flowed freely- the selfdescribed “Dad Band,” Mid-Life Crisis, has been delighting audiences in Antigua ever since.
What started as a group of friends coming together to make music and have fun quickly turned into something bigger. Their big break came when they were invited to play on the main stage at Cervecería 14. Disguised in costumes and wigs, they performed incognito for friends and acquaintances, leaving the crowd buzzing with curiosity: “These guys are good… who are they?”
During the pandemic, the band maintained their tradition of gathering every Thursday at a secret location. These sessions became more than just about music—they turned into a source of comfort and connection during challenging times. What began as jam sessions soon evolved into weekly social rituals, with more friends and family joining in to share the music and camaraderie.
True to their scrappy spirit, the band has practiced in the most unlikely places—construction sites, their kids’ bedrooms, you name it!

Mid-Life Crisis considers itself a band of “misfit toys”, a brotherhood of middle-aged dads from diverse backgrounds (Guatemalan, Peruvian, American) and careers, including an aeronautical engineer, a restaurateur, a chemical engineer, and business owners. What binds them together is their shared passion for music.
Their repertoire spans decades, covering hits from the 1960s to the early 2000s, and they perform in both Spanish and English. Unlike most bands, Mid-Life Crisis is unique in that every member takes a turn singing lead vocals, making each performance dynamic and full of surprises.
Catch Them Live
Mid-Life Crisis has had the honor of opening for renowned Guatemalan acts such as Bohemia Suburbana and Fabiola Roudha, cementing their place in Antigua’s vibrant music scene. When in Antigua, don’t miss the chance to experience Mid-Life Crisis live -a band that proves music, laughter, and friendship only get better with age!

Why a Corporation is Necessary for a Foreigner in Antigua Guatemala
In the dynamic world of business, choosing the right legal structure is essential to ensure security and growth. That is why the creation of corporations (Sociedad Anónima in Guatemala. LLC in the United States) is recommended as a key strategy for those who want to invest in Guatemala, especially in the real estate and tourism sector of Antigua Guatemala.
Creating a corporation is like giving life to a person, a legal person, an abstract person that allows you to open bank accounts as if you were a Guatemalan.
By purchasing in the name of the company, the acquisition of property is facilitated for non-residents, avoiding long notarial processes for property transfers.
Many business licenses, municipal permits, and authorizations for tourist activities require that the business be legally constituted, which is more agile through a corporation.
Unlike a business in a personal name, the corporation continues to exist even if its shareholders change or the original owner decides to retire. If you are not a Guatemalan Resident, I recommend that you consider a corporation for both your business and
non-business activities such as the acquisition of personal property as a form of protection, a necessary legal figure for your activities in Guatemala.
You cannot operate economically in Guatemala without a Corporation.
One of our many foreign clients residing in Antigua explains it this way:
“I decided to work with an SA because it was easier to navigate licenses, open bank accounts and pay wages this way. It always gave me a level of personal protection creating a distance between me personally and my business life. Not just for practical reasons but my family, spiritual, personal and social life become separate from the economic world which is the SA.”
My team can establish a corporation in 20 days, thus facilitating a quick entry into the economic and real estate market of Antigua Guatemala.
Turn your vision into a business reality!
Dr. Modesto José Armando Salazar-Dieguez is a lawyer and notary from Antigua Guatemala with over a decade of experience in corporate law and the founder of the Legal Consult law firm. He has distinguished himself as a legal consultant in sectors such as tourism and real estate development, providing modern solutions in a city with a rich cultural heritage.

Safe Passage Marks 25 Years of Impact in Guatemala
Twenty-five years ago, the communities surrounding the municipal garbage dump in Guatemala City were isolated from the outside world and bore some of the harshest living conditions in not just Guatemala, but all of Latin America. When Safe Passage Founder Hanley Denning first visited the garbage dump in 1999, she couldn’t turn away. Her decision to call her parents in Maine and ask them to sell her belongings and send the funds to Guatemala began a beautifully transformative tale that has sent ripples of love, generosity, and transformation worldwide.
Over the last 25 years, Safe Passage and the communities that they serve have continued to evolve through constant evaluation, analysis, and the commitment of dedicated people from Guatemala and around the world. Today, Safe Passage is a fullday, holistic school offering 550 students per year, one of the highest quality educations available in Guatemala. Students receive 4 healthy meals and snacks daily, access to preventative and acute healthcare services, social workers and psychologists in every building, mindfulness and meditation daily, English and Kaqchikel (Mayan) language classes, technology and STEAM curricula, sexual and reproductive health education.
Safe Passage serves over 3,000 community members annually and has become a catalyst for
hundreds of families to break the cycle of poverty within one generation.
This is not to say that the communities surrounding the garbage dump are not still experiencing some of the highest rates of poverty, violence, and discrimination in the country. Conditions in the neighborhoods are very tough, and like many mostly -Indigenous Maya communities in Guatemalagovernment services and investment are woefully inadequate. Informal workers pay the municipality for permission to enter the dump to remove and sell the recycling and waste that their families subsist on. Gang violence occurs at the highest rates in the Americas, and the community is exposed to violence, trauma, and environmental contamination beyond imagination. The families who do Guatemala City’s most important environmental work of recycling and reducing the waste entering the landfill are exploited and mistreated.
Today, Safe Passage is a full-day, holistic school offering 550 students per year, one of the highest quality educations available in Guatemala.
And also within this complicated ecosystem, there is beauty, strength, and years of powerful community development. “Over 25 years, Safe Passage has witnessed significant community transformations," highlights Erin Mooney, the organization's Executive Director, “Our students are comingtousmorereadytolearnthaneverbefore, thanks to sustained investments in education, health, and community development from Safe Passage, community leaders, and many partner
organizations. This foundation allows us to provide anexceptionaleducation, prepareourgraduatesto face systemic challenges, and seize opportunities for the future. Students are graduating with the academic foundation, intrinsic motivation, and leadershiptosucceedinuniversitystudies, jobs,or whatevertheymaydream.Manyof themdreamof changingsystemicinequities.”
Twenty five years after their founding and 18 years after Hanley’s tragic death, Safe Passage continues to fight the odds and the systemic barriers that the students and families it serves face. As the organization evolves, many students express themselves as change makers and cycle breakers for their families, communities, and Guatemala. As one recent graduate shared, “we are people of change.”
Safe Passage invites supporters worldwide to join this journey. Individual financial contributions, corporate partnerships, and grants sustain this vital mission. As Safe Passage celebrates 25 years of impact and transformation, it is still guided by Hanley's words: "We have work to do."

It's Yoga Time!
Yoga is a millennial-old Vedic science that encompasses much more than the postures. Yoga is a lifestyle. It is a way to walk in the world. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (200 BCE - 400 CE) were the first written texts explaining the yoga system. Before then, it had been an oral tradition, passed down from teacher to student. Archaeological finds show sculptures of yoga poses dating 5000 years old.
The foundation of yoga is the restraints (yama) and the observances (niyama) to work on a person as a citizen and an individual. People of all ages and abilities can practice yoga. As Baba Hari Dass once wrote: "The minute you have decided to become a better person, you have begun the practice of yoga."
If you're looking to practice yoga whilst in Antigua, check out YogAntigua. It's located in the gallery of the beautiful Meson Panza Verde Hotel and offers daily yoga classes. www.yogantigua.com.gt
Or how about a class of nurturing Yoga, followed by a delicious breakfast with stunning views and moments spent embracing the natural world?
Earth Lodge has a drop-in yoga class every morning at 9 AM which is suitable for all levels! You can catch a shuttle from Cafe Alegria near Central Park at 8 AM. Q30 round trip returning at noon. www.earthlodgeguatemala.com

El Campanario:
Honoring Memories, Accompanying Lives
There are places where silence whispers stories, and memory blooms with the same strength as love that never fades. In the heart of a serene environment, El Campanario has become a space where farewells transform into acts of eternal love and remembrance. With a history dedicated to grief support, we have established ourselves as a reference in funeral services, providing not just a place for final rest but also an emotional refuge for those navigating loss.
Here, goodbye is not an endpoint but a serene pause that allows memories to breathe. In the act of cremation, we find a gesture of deep respect: an intimate rite that transforms absence into subtle presence, allowing love to take new forms. It is not an end but a luminous transformation, preserving the essence in every ash, in every breath.
For those walking the path of grief, we created “Vínculos de Amor” (Bonds of Love), a space where pain transforms into a bridge toward hope. It is not just a program; it is compassionate companionship that invites healing through connection, where comfort is not found in words but in the presence that embraces without asking.
One of the most symbolic spaces in this program is our butterfly garden, a place where each butterfly represents a life that, though brief, left an indelible mark. Here, the delicate flight of each butterfly becomes a living tribute, reminding us that love transcends physical absence.
At El Campanario, we honor memories and accompany lives. We believe that saying goodbye does not mean forgetting but finding new ways to keep the bond with our loved ones alive. Because every story deserves to be told, every life deserves to be celebrated, and every memory treasured with dignity and love.
Allow us to accompany you on this journey of memory and love:
