Well, a warm welcome back to Qué Pasa. After postponing this edition due to the “political storm,” of last October, one cannot but feel more positive for 2024.

With this in mind, I was thrilled to interview Juan Manuel Asturias, our young new mayor of Antigua. To get an idea of the changes coming to Antigua go to page 14.

From politics to birds, check out Peter Rohloff’s “Common Birds of Antigua” beginning on page 22. No, pigeons are not mentioned, but at least I can put a name to that 6 AM screeching bluey-black bird. Did you know that it’s a great-tailed grackle? And a special thanks to the delightful illustrations by Gustavo Estrada that accompany the article.

Interview with the New Mayor Juan Manuel Asturias It came to many as a surprise including myself that the sitting mayor of Antigua Guatemala failed in his bid to continue as mayor for 2024-2028. I was intrigued to learn more about the new mayor Juan Manuel Asturias and his plans for Antigua when he comes to office next January.

So, I was delighted that he agreed to an interview with Qué Pasa. JuanMa as he likes to be known is a youthful 38-yearold. He is married, a company administrator and constructor. He campaigned through the Comité Cívico Futuro but is not affiliated to any political party. His great uncle was Miguel Ángel Asturias, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I began by asking JuanMa why he ran for mayor. He said that as an antigüeño, he was sad to see Antigua growing without a clear plan and set of rules to preserve its charm, while keeping its urban functionality for all the habitants. He felt he could do better and so decided to run for office.

“We changed the way politics is done in Antigua and I would even dare to say in the whole country” says JuanMa. He explains that during the election, they didn’t print flyers, use billboards, give out bags of gifts to potential voters, neither had they expensive concerts, rent a central office, promise jobs in the MUNI or buy votes! Pretty heady stuff indeed.

He puts his success at the ballot box to the strategy of personally reaching the voters; spending time in the villages to understand their needs and sitting with them while drinking coffee and hearing their points of view first-hand.

We then touch on his priorities for the next 4 years. JuanMa considers basic services as his main priority. Water, drainage, and roads. He plans to construct a new modern market, with public toilets within the same location, a robust public parking for the habitants and visitors of Antigua and lastly is mobility around Antigua, wanting to solve the issues with a better way to control the current traffic, implementing new electric buses with clear routes of public transportations to the center of Antigua and its numerous villages.

Interview with the New Major Juan Manuel Asturias

He reminds me that he is not just mayor of Antigua but mayor of the twenty-one aldeas (villages) around Antigua. The main priority will be dealing with the lack of running water.

I then dig deeper into the new electric buses. He tells me that a new regulation will be that all buses passing though Antigua and from Antigua to the villages will need to be electric.

Buses from Guatemala City will need to park at the entrance of the city and passengers will need to take the electric buses. I can’t wait to see this. Maybe if those ghastly bus fumes will be a thing of the past, I’ll go out and buy myself an electric scooter!

As for Antigua’s traffic crisis, Juanma feels that the rate of new gated community projects is “out of control,” and that Antigua desperately needs a “plan de ordenamiento territorial”. He says this not solely about traffic but also about water, drainage and environmental impact.

He will hire more transit police to help regulate the traffic especially during rush hours and with the Muni electric buses connecting Antigua to the villages (Safe, clean and low cost) it will be the incentive to leave cars and motorbikes at home.

In the long term he would like to plan for a ring road around Antigua or a tunnel taking traffic from the RN10 to the RN14. But he says that would take money and planning from central government to be done. Apparently the Chipilapa improvements that took a year will achieve nothing with a cost of $5 Million. That’s 5% of a tunnel which Juanma believes would cost roughly $100 Million.

One of Juanma’s key phrases is to “make Antigua the best place to live, attractive to visit and to invest.” He is very open to the idea of public-private partnerships especially regarding tourism projects. His vision is that with the necessary infrastructure tourists will spend more time in and around Antigua while spending more to benefit all. The Muni will invest in an App which will include promoting the villages for tourism.

As the interview winds down, I ask JuanMa what he loves about Antigua. On refection, he answers its people; that they are welcoming, friendly, and warm. He then mentions the rich culture, the stunning natural beauty and its history.

I couldn’t help mentioning that to me JuanMa and the president elect Bernardo Arévalo have some similarities; they are very grass root focused, not entirely accepted by the establishment, anti-corruption focused and in a way outsiders. After a long pause, Juanma said that yes in a way they both are outsiders but with differing political views.

My parting shot as the interview wrapped up was whether he was planning to serve as mayor for four or eight years.

“Eight years!”

It was a pleasure to interview JuanMa and I wish him and his team all the best.

Birds in

Ruby Throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris)

The hills and forests around Antigua host numerous species of nonmigratory hummingbirds which are small, fast, and hard to identify! The rubythroated, on the other hand is one of the migratory hummingbirds and is only seen during the winter (dry season) in Guatemala. It is easy to identify if you are lucky to see a male with the typical bright red throat feeding on flowers. Unfortunately, females and immature males do not have this flash of color and are much harder to identify.

Guatemala is a very popular destination for bird watchers. There is a wide variety of Central American birds across unique ecosystems in Guatemala, including tropical, subtropical, and high alpine zones. In addition, many birds that breed in higher latitudes in North America will migrate south to Guatemala for the winter. This means that the northern hemisphere winter (which we call the summer here) is an exciting time to see birds from all over.

Although there are many tour companies and outfitters to see birds in many remoter locations throughout Guatemala, Antigua itself is a great place to see birds even for casual observers!

All that is needed is some free time and, ideally, a pair of binoculars. In addition to the large flocks of rock pigeons (Columba livia) that crowd the trees in the central square and roost on the cathedral, you will likely be serenaded almost every morning by the cooing of doves, most commonly the Inca dove (Columbina inca) or the white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica), and the noisy chatter of Old World sparrows (Passer domesticus) roosting in the eves like they do everywhere in the world.

Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes Similis)

This medium-sized flycatcher loves to hang out around humans, eating berries and perching on telephone wires. It is almost always seen in groups, which chatter away among each other while perching and feeding. The belly is brilliant yellow, with a white neck and bright white stripe above the eye. It is most active in the morning but can be seen all day long.

Great Tailed Grackle (Quiscalus Mexicanus)

Almost as common as pigeons and doves in Antigua! This inquisitive, noisy bird will get into almost anything, including your food if you are not careful. Males are large with long black tails which sometimes have a spectacular blue or purple iridesence. Females are a little smaller with more brown feathers. A wonderful sight is large crowds of grackles flying in together to roost in the early evening, which can be observed from many rooftop terraces.

Here are a few more birds that are unique to the area, and which you might need to pay a little more attention to catch!

Orchard Oriole (Icterus Spurius)

There are several species of oriole in Antigua, some of which are year-round and some migratory. The orchard oriole is migratory, meaning your best chance to see it is in the winter (our dry season). It is a smaller oriole with a pleasant song which includes the uprising whistles typical of orioles. The males are distinctive black heads and backs with a deep rust-orange colored belly and chest. The females are a nondescript yellow and are hard to identify without seeing the male.

Yellow Winged Tanager (Thraupis abbas)

We are fortunate to have several species of nonmigratory tanagers which are with us all year round. The yellow-winged tanager can be seen perching in larger trees through Antigua, especially in the mornings and on the periphery of town. The head is a gray-blue to pale lilac color, with a small black patch in front of the eye and a bright stripe of yellow on the wing.

Gold-Fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes Aurifrons)

This is the most common woodpecker in lower elevations and urban environments like Antigua. If you see a bird alight vertically on tree, it is probably a golden-fronted woodpecker. The head has a small cap of red or yellow red, the back is black and white striped, and the belly is usually a uniform yellowish-white (not nearly as “golden” as the name would imply).

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus) This is another bird that breeds at higher latitudes but spends the winter (our dry season) in Guatemala. During these months, pay close attention to fruit- and seed-bearing trees where they will spend hours feeding. Both males and females have thick pinkish beaks. Males develop a dark pink-red patch on the breast before migrating north, but this may be more faint pink during much of their time in Guatemala.

Bushy crested jay (Cyanocorax melanocyaneus)

This is a large bird, noisy like all jays although somewhat reclusive, tending to hide within trees. It is unmistakable if you spot it the entire body is dark black, but the wings are brilliant blue and the eyes are a piercing yellow.

Your best chance for spotting is early mornings or late afternoons in the coffee fields bordering Antigua.

Clay Colored Thrush (Turdus grayi)

This nonmigrating bird is the most common thrush at lower elevations and in urban environments in Guatemala. It is a uniformly brown color, occasionally with a slight yellowish tint to the under belly. Like most thrushes it is an extremely active singer in the morning and evening if you listen for it! They tend to hide under foliage when singing but will often perch in the open during the day.

However, they have hummingbird feeders and you will see many different hummingbird species in one place.

Best in the late afternoon to catch the unique mix of birds that favor the transitional zone between the forest and coffee fields. Walk along one of the hiking paths that encircle the coffee at the edge of the forest.

Great early morning spot to see numerous birds! Go early as sun is just risen and before the crowds start.

Semana Santa in Antigua Guatemala

Lent and Easter in Antigua, Guatemala is world-famous for its elaborate Christian religious celebrations. They begin on Ash Wednesday -14th of February, heralding the 40 days of Lent -Cuaresma.

Every weekend you can see amazing processions and vigils. This leads up to the week of Easter (Semana Santa). If you’re planning on visiting Antigua, then this is the time to visit and immerse yourself in the centuries-old traditions handed down from generation to generation.

Don’t miss the Holy Vigils, the incredible Processions, the timeless Cucuruchos, and vivid Carpets (alfombras.) Brass bands play atmospheric funeral music. The smell of incense and the colours of the flowers all contribute to making Antigua the place to visit during Lent and Easter.

EARTH LODGE:

A Rustic Luxury Escape

Written by Joanne Stanton Are you looking to escape from all the hustle and bustle that is Antigua? I certainly was and decided to head up to Earth Lodge for the night with my husband for some much-needed R&R. I came back feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and reenergized.

This rustic luxury eco resort is located on an organic avocado farm in the mountains of Guatemala, just 15 minutes outside of Antigua, and has a restaurant, wellness center and nine gorgeous cabañas and tree houses that feature the most stunning volcano views.

“We never slept better in our private and cozy Tree House, fully surrounded by nature, and waking up to the best views ever.”

One of its many charms is that you need to walk 300 meters down on a dirt walking path to reach the Lodge.

In addition to being a great workout, it creates that feeling of disconnecting from your daily worries and (quite literally!) leaving everything behind.

As fans of French cuisine, we kicked off our mini-retreat with a lateafternoon Artisan Picnic that included a Charcuterie and Wine pairing of locally sourced meats, cheeses, olives, nuts, fruits, pickled vegetables, and sourdough bread – all served with a basket, blanket, and bottle of fine red.

Delicious!

While we were enjoying the gorgeous sunset, the helpful staff prepared the Temazcal (“house of heat”). This traditional igloo-shaped Mayan Sauna is wood-heated, and water is poured over heated volcanic stones and aromatic plants to produce an herbal infused steam. In the ancient Maya world, the Temazcal was used as part of a curative ceremony to purify the body after exertion or for healing the sick and improving health. In modern times, it proved to be a very effective way of stress reduction!

The Restaurant menu offered many exciting and fresh dinner options characterized by authentic Guatemalan tropical fruits, herbs, and other ingredients. Fancy a wholesome soup,

burger or a vegan, vegetarian and/or gluten free option? It’s all there. And for the Panza Verdes, there are no fewer than 7 avocado dishes: toast, fries, salad, tacos, burger, ceviche, and mousse!

We never slept better in our private and cozy Tree House, fully surrounded by nature, and waking up to the best views ever. In Antigua Guatemala, many things have changed since March 2020 including the culinary scene.

Besides being a time of uncertainty, frustration and change, it was also a time of camaraderie, empathy, an outpouring of community-wide support and lastly opportunity.

In December 2020, Hector's Bistro left its tiny restau­rant facing La Merced and moved to a much larger space in the heart of Antigua together with Cerveceria 14.

This collaboration inspired Hector's Bistro to create the Tap Room Menu to pair both beers and wines. On the menu, you'll f,nd Hector's char­ cuterie board and their dates, stuffed with artis­ anal goat cheese, and wrapped in crispy bacon. If you have not tried them, you are missing out on an explosion of flavors in a single bite.

This new relationship inspired them to try and make the best pizza in town. To differentiate themselves from the rest they decided to push themselves to make theirs with SOURDOUGH crust. One of the benefits of sourdough pizza is that it is easier to digest, even for some people who are intolerant to gluten.

The SOURDOUGH technique seemed so fascinat­ ing to us that we began to make our baguette bread with the same sourdough, our brioche, and whole wheat/seed bread. This led us to experiment with many other types of bread and baking.

This is where the idea of making their own bakery arose ... and why not? .... "Perhaps open a Deli?''. A place for people to buy sourdough products, and some of Hector's sauces. They then came up with the idea of high quality and affordable sandwich­ es.

"The Melts," are a line of sandwiches cooked on the grill featuring our homemade bread and a mixture of three delicious kinds of cheese, a line of sandwiches to remember and honor the mo­ ments when we all ate homemade melts and which, incidentally, take us back to happy child­ hood moments.

At the end of the year 2022, Hector’s purchased the recipes and the rights to the brand of the renowned kitchen/bakery CANELA which was originally located on 1st Avenue North. For those who do not know the history of CANELA, it was founded by Dave, a Jewish descendant from New York, who learnt the art of baking delicious bread that the Jewish heritage has gracefully contributed to the culinary industry: bagels, Challa, Babka's, etc.

The legend says that this baker developed a Whiskey & Rye recipe that was awarded by the Bon Appetit, the famous culinary magazine.

So in your next visit to this amazing little town, we hope you can come and try our beer or wine pairing menu, described in our menu as “our TapRoom Menu”, a sourdough Pizza ma made from scratch, or perhaps a cheese melt or a gourmet sandwich made with homemade pastrami and bread. And of course, a whiskey & rye cookie or cinnamon roll to end your day with a sweet note.

Hector’s team worked closely and trained with ex-bakers of CANELA. “It is not easy to maintain the quality of each and every product, especially when you are not the original creator of the recipe, but we do our best every day to try to keep the recipes as they were originally made.” Hector’s ideal scenario is to honor those artists/bakers of the culinary world, trying to create the recipes just as they were, or at least try to keep them as si similar to how they were from their origin.

Annie and Felix, two free souls, destined to meet. Complementing each other, and like many of us, eager to learn and succeed they decided to follow the exciting path of gastronomy.

Our beginnings... Felix from England decided to make a tribute to artisan bread, dedicating time to research and learn about fermentation and baking. Annie, from Guatemala admires this new process and decides to support him. Some days the result is great, others not so much, but together they find in this humble tradition a door to many opportunities.

They start their journey by building a wood fired brick oven using recycled materials donated from a friend.

The support and encouragement from family and good friends give them a push to open a small café in the garage of their house with a few simple tables in the garden. This soon became an attraction for the public.

If you’re looking for authentic Indian cuisine in Antigua, then look no further than Indian Accent.

Born in New Delhi, chef Sumit Kumar comes from a long line family of chefs. He learned his cooking skills not only from his family but also working at the Taj Palace, the renown 5* hotel in Delhi. Sumit then worked at a leading Indian restaurant in Frankfurt Germany before coming to Guatemala just before Covid hit to open a chain of Indian restaurants in Guatemala City for a group of entrepreneurs. The plans came to nothing, but he did meet his future wife Maria Leonardo and they decided to move to Antigua and open Indian Accent together.

When I visited Indian Accent, I sampled a few of their dishes.

I loved

the Palak Paneer. It’s a spinach curry with onions, tomato, Indian masala, butter, cream with paneer cheese cubes. It’s rich spicy, intense, and warming.

The Butter chicken roasted in their tandoor oven, covered in a buttery tomato sauce is pure comfort food. I enjoyed dipping the crisp garlic naan bread into the velvety sauce. Delicious!

Sumit recommends the whole salmon tikka roast. Order the day before as the salmon is marinated for 24 hours.

Their homemade chutneys are to die forTamarind, tomato, mint and for me star of the show was their pineapple chutney. So much so that I bought some to go!

To drink, Maria served me a fresh jackfruit lassi. Made with organic yogurt and sliced almonds it’s sweet and creamy and so refreshing.

Indian Accent has an extensive menu. Maybe start with a portion of samosas. They are a popular Indian street food-fried pastry stuffed with potatoes and spices.W For mains consider ordering a dish cooked in the tandoor ovenperhaps the black garlic chicken tikka. If like me, you like lamb, then

Maize was and continues to be the most relevant crop within the Mayan culture. Its harvest was enough to feed the entire population of farmers and support the elite, which included warriors, writers and artists. Maize is also cultivated in milpa, the system in which it is combined with other plants, such as beans, sweet potatoes and different kinds of chili.

As you can imagine, agriculture played a significant role in the Maya’s subsistence, which is why it is said they created their famous calendar, as means of planning when to clean the land, sow and then grow what has always been a staple in their diet.

Maya religion was even conceived around crops and the deities who governed their growth and abundance. The agricultural cycle was related to astronomy with the corn representing the central axis of its worldview, this link between the plant and humans led them to consider themselves as the men of corn, as pointed out in the Popol Vuh. The Popol Vuh is a foundational sacred narrative of the K’iche’ people from long before the Spanish conquest of the Maya. It includes the Mayan creation myth, the exploits of the Hero Twins Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, and a chronicle of the K’iche’ people. Maize - in its different forms of consumption - is still an important part of our diet, representing over 50% of our daily food intake. Maize is mainly prepared into dough (with the amount of water added to the mix creating a significant change in its use).

Usually, with regular dough you can make tortillas (which can be eaten as an accompaniment for every single meal and can even be used as a sort of spoon to pick food up from the plate).

special tamales are made for celebrations like weddings, baptisms and yes, funerals.

Regardless of the size and whatever might be added, tamalitos, tamales and overal everything maize related is something that can be found at most Guatemalan tables at different times of the day, not just because they are tasty, but because in some way, they define our culture, our gastronomy and our traditions.

With a slightly more consistent mix, you can make tamales and tamalitos. Tamalitos, which you might assume are just smaller tamales, do use the same dough as tamales but are smaller and the leaves used to contain the mix for cooking are different, so the texture of the final product changes and can vary depending on the additional ingredients like spices, herbs and fresh seasonal herbs added. Sometimes pork chicharrón is added. When pork meat and a whole lot more tomato sauce is added, they’re called chuchitos.

Cafe Condesa opened its doors on Palm Sunday 1993. It was farm to table before “Farm to Table was even a concept. Since the beginning, all the menu items are made in-house. Back then, not much was available in Antigua. We visited local farms to ensure the produce was being grown with potable water. We drove to Guatemala City weekly with big coolers to buy whole turkeys and aged tenderloins. Heck, we even had to buy cases of napkins and toilet paper because there were no deliveries to small restaurants in Antigua at that time. Thankfully, now most businesses deliver and/or affordable express shipping exists.

Back to the food. Everything is prepared with the freshest ingredients available. We use whole milk that is delivered daily from a local dairy. We use only the best butter and cream, also local. The eggs in all the breakfast dishes are from free-range, organically-fed hens (and breakfast is served all day long). The icings on the cakes are either buttercream or fresh whipped cream. No fillers or additives are needed.

The oils we use are olive or sunflower. Simply said, we don’t skimp on the quality, and you can tell that with your first bite. To complement the menu and to take advantage of the wide array of seasonal fruits and vegetables, we have daily specials: soup, pancakes, omelet and sometimes a special dessert item.

Do you have a sweet tooth?

If you do, during your visit to Guatemala, and even more, La Antigua, you will soon realize that these are ideal places where you can both satisfy your sense of culinary adventure and yes, your sweet tooth.

Desserts in Guatemala have a tight relationship with spices (like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg), milk (and powdered milk), fruits and definitely seeds. We love adding sugar and powdered sugar to many things. When it comes to candy, we love to mix and match, to create and take advantage of the wide range of fruits available, which is why you will also find candy made out of guava, tamarind, figs, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

Marzipan is made from raw almonds and crushed sugar into a soft, smooth paste molded and served in a variety of shapes. Some people add raisins on top of the small squares made with it, some others add crushed almonds and others will shape it into whatever form needed for special occasions like baptisms or first communions.

We use guava to make colochos, yes, another one of our very special words which means ‘curly ones’, it applies to hair, and all curly forms, including candy. Chewy, round, and made from seasoned guava, they are covered in sugar and you might not find them in many other places.

Pumpkin is boiled with plenty of sugar and spices for hours and hours until it gets a caramelized taste and texture that will definitely impress those who have just tasted pumpkin in pies or soups. The final name given to this traditional candy is ‘chilacayote’.

We could go on and on about the tens of candy available, and even if we described them at length, you might not be able to identify them as Guatemalans are creative when it comes to preparing food, assigning nicknames and trying to give directions.

Let’s start with the famous ones, the ‘canillitas de leche’ or milk Canillitas. Did I mention we are also creative with names? Canillas is a common way to call legs, it is well known that if you’re light skinned, you might be told your legs are made of milk, hence, canillitas (small legs) de leche. Made with milk, sugar and cinnamon, canillitas are really one of the most popular traditional sweets you’ll find. Depending on the kind of sugar that’s used, their color and flavor will vary.

The best advice we can give is for you to take the task seriously, go out and find the candy, take a look, ask as many questions as you can (just in case there is something you’re allergic to) and immerse yourself in one of the culinary delights this country has to offer.

If you add some coconut and definitely more cinnamon to the mix, you will end up with the famous ‘encanelados’ which can be translated into ‘full of cinnamon’. We like coconut a lot, so we bathe it in condensed milk, add raisins to it, and create a soft and sweet paste with it to fill some figs. Figs were originally brought to Guatemala by the Spanish in colonial times and to turn them into candy, we boil them with sugar and spices and serve them as dessert or let them cool off and bathe them in a sweet concoction that will glaze them. We fill them with a mix of coconut and milk or with marzipan.

You will never, ever regret it.

The word isn’t something that sounds poetic or even hints at it being some sort of traditional dish – with some great story behind its origin. No, the word shuco, if anything, sounds a bit strong, rough even.

Don’t let that fool you, a shuco is one of the most underrated dishes in Guatemala and one you should get to know very well in all its great varieties. It is important to mention it’s somewhat like a sandwich but not quite.

A GUATEMALAN ORIGINAL

Street vendors (as you’ll usually find them at markets, corners and festivities) use special bread as a base, a little thick so that it can contain all the things coming next without falling apart.

The making of a shuco is somewhat methodical, for starters, whoever is making it will take some freshly made guacamole (no diced tomatoes or onions or anything else but salt and a squeeze of lime in it) and spread it all over the bread. Then, they’ll add the meat: your pick of pork, beef, chorizo (sausage) and/or longaniza (a different kind of sausage, usually without some spices and with herbs) – even all of them mixed – cut in small pieces and drop them on top. Next comes some cabbage, not overcooked and not undercooked, and your choice of mustard, mayo, ketchup and even seasoned onions, chirmol (fresh tomato and herbs sauce) and some spicy chile.

Even though it sounds like a strange combination of elements – and perhaps it is – it’s a dish you need to experience, to try at least once as it embodies Guatemalan culture in a very different way than the recados (sauces) and typical dishes. This is the kind of food we eat growing up at the fairs, at birthday parties and most definitely on town corners.

Besides being cheap (don’t ever pay more than Q12 for a small one while in town), it is usually the meal over which football teams, students and people in a rush bond and make small talk.

At age 14, Marcos Antil became the last of his family to migrate to California.

Guatemalan and Mayan Q’anjob’al, he fled Guatemala’s civil war, undocumented and unaccompanied, just as so many others were forced to do, in pursuit of safety and opportunity.

He made the most of it, graduating high school and university, going from a weekend gardener to an entrepreneur in the tech industry. He was able to return to his home country a success, as one who had obtained the American Dream, and with the intent of making Guatemalan Dreams come true. He founded (and later sold) the software company XumaK in Guatemala in hopes of giving people opportunities so that they wouldn’t need to go through what he did to find success. His energy seems limitless, and he has a natural magnetism that turns heads wherever he goes.

Marcos Antil Author of Migrante

As a kid, it wasn’t the undocumented status that was difficult. It was the culture shock. The drastic change in language was especially difficult for me, as I was a native Mayan speaker who was still learning Spanish, the official language in Guatemala.

How do you think the immigrant experience today is different from when you migrated from Guatemala to the US? As a kid, I think the current challenges of forced migration as when I came 30-plus years ago are similar. Of course, the issues we face as adults may be very different. In my case, as a teenager, staying out of gangs was extremely difficult, especially in a lowincome neighborhood. These challenges remain true for undocumented immigrant teens in low-income neighborhoods today.

If someone in Guatemala asks you about migrating to the US today, what do you advise them?

Forced migration is a complex issue with no easy answers. Every human being has the right to migrate, but forced migration can put people in danger. When someone has nothing left to lose and sees a glimmer of hope in migration, no one can stop them from going after that hope.

My answer is usually: Remember why you are leaving. And if you can help others avoid such sacrifice in the future, you should. Never forget where you came from, and who you are.

Antil penned and self-published his autobiography, Migrante, which has been a bestseller in Guatemala every year since it first hit shelves in 2019. Earlier this year an English translation – Immigrant – was published. The book opens in a setting that will be familiar to readers of Rigoberta Menchú’s I, Rigoberta Menchú, though in Immigrant it leaves the countryside as members of the Antil family escape to El Norte. Menchú came through with a nice blurb for the book: “The life of Marcos Antil narrated in Immigrant is a living testimony full of truth that leaves droplets of humanity on each of its pages. It awakens the human conscience and shatters the silence about the cruelty experienced by the most dispossessed of the planet, becoming a story that represents collective memory.”

We can’t say it any better than the Nobel Peace Prize winner.

CIRMA is an incredible resource center located in the heart of Antigua. Founded in 1978 by historian Christopher H. Lutz and archeologist William R. Swezey, it has evolved exceptionally over the decades; indeed, some of us remember when CIRMA acquired the first computer in Antigua! Dedicated to the preservation of Guatemala’s visual and documentary patrimony, CIRMA is a non-profit foundation, not religious or political, and its collections speak of history from different voices.

CIRMA’s doors opened to the public as a small library, with publications related to social sciences and usually not available in the country. The Biblioteca de Ciencias Sociales now has over 100,000 titles, including rare books and special collections, as well as documents, articles and magazines.

In 1979, the Fototeca Guatemala was created by photographer Mitchell Denburg. Its main purpose is to preserve the visual memory of Guatemala and is considered the most important photo archive in Central America with more than 220 collections and 1.5 million images in different formats. Photographic images as early as 1840 truly bring to life the country’s past with its daily life, ethnic groups, art, architecture, political events, and natural disasters. We love those from the nineteenth century and early twentieth century!

The Archivo Histórico was founded in 1997, and holds collections in various formats (paper, digital, microfilm, audio, and video). With a critical role in preserving Guatemala’s history, documents date back to the sixteenth century to the present, with an emphasis on the contemporary period starting in 1944. Why Buy Real Estate in Guatemala Through A Corporation?

In estate planning, there is not one right answer for every situation.

A property can be bought in the name of individuals, but it is also possible that it is in the name of legal entities. A Corporation “Sociedad Anónima” (known as an “S.A.”) is frequently used in Guatemala for safeguarding real-estate assets. It has a limited liability to the value of the S.A.’s assets, and although the names of the founding members are public, the Registry of Commerce only records how much stock has been issued. The names of the stockholders or any transfers of stock are not in the public domain; this information only appears in the private records of the corporation. A Foreigner does not need to be a Guatemalan resident to form an S.A., to own stock or to be the legal representative.

An S.A. is an entity with Guatemalan nationality; it has its own tax identification number, assets, and is responsible exclusively for civil liability (so it protects the name and assets of the shareholders). It pays taxes in Guatemala for the income that it receives and must have its own bookkeeping; having an experienced accountant is advisable.

In Guatemala, when a property is coowned by individuals, the share of one of the owners does not pass automatically to the other co-owner when one of the co-owners passes away.

The S.A. is a way to facilitate the inheritance transfer, especially for foreigners, as the probate process in Guatemala can be long and costly.

In 1999 Mesón Panza Verde opened the doors of a space designated for art. Surprising with its versatility, presenting and supporting works by renowned Guatemalan artists, as well as internationally recognized artists. Panza Verde Gallery has had exhibitions of great artists such as Luis González Palma, Julio Zadik and Daniel Chauche.

Demonstrating support for most artists, they showcase pieces decorating various spaces such as the rooms, hallways and restaurant. It is a place frequented by design lovers; they like to keep remodeling different areas of the facilities to renew and give a fresh touch. Maintaining the decoration style with an exact mix between art and antiques.

Generally, there is an art opening the first Friday of the month where you can meet the artist and a glass of wine.

The composition and the moment captured are very good, the movement of the waves, the lines they generate, the person and the colors definitely create an exceptional photograph.”

– Judge Ivan Macías Nelo Mijangos, arguably Antigua’s most notorious photographer, can usually be spotted behind the lens documenting the traditions and people of his hometown and his country. Part of the fabric of Antigua, Mijangos is humble about his work, doing street photography for the love of the art and his love of Guatemala.

His body of work includes photographing Semana Santa for 23 years straight, which is the largest archive of digital photos of Semana Santa in existence. In 2015 he opened the first of a series of exhibitions named “Tempus Cuaresma”. The next exhibitions in the series occurred in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 at different locations throughout Guatemala. In 2020 he was asked to present his work on Semana Santa and the religious traditions of Guatemala to Pope Francis at the Vatican on behalf of Guatemala.

Closing Health Gaps in Rural Guatemala:

Communication is Key How could healthcare be different if it was provided in your own language? This question drove the creation of Maya Health Alliance | Wuqu’ Kawoq in 2007.

While many rural Guatemalans speak Mayan languages, most healthcare is provided in Spanish. Maya people also confront other barriers to accessing quality healthcare, such as discrimination and cost. As a consequence, people in rural, primarily indigenous communities experience substantially worse health outcomes. While 46% of children in Guatemala suffer from chronic malnutrition, for instance, that rate approaches 70% in many rural, indigenous communities.

Maya Health constantly collects data to understand how programs work in different community contexts so it can make adjustments to provide the most effective care possible. Its Center for Indigenous Health Research has published more than 100 articles sharing the results.

So when community leaders in Santiago, Sacatepéquez came together with a group of graduate students from the US to close health gaps in rural Guatemala, it was clear that this was where they needed to start: by building a team rooted in local communities dedicated to providing respectful, quality care in Mayan languages. The organization formally launched on January 1, 2007 — the day known on the traditional Mayan calendar as “Wuqu’ Kawoq” in honor of medicine and health care providers.

The organization is excited to be expanding its sexual and reproductive health and family planning services to include more male partners with the addition of a male peer educator and more robust community workshops. Another area of growing emphasis is working for policy changes to address the root causes of health problems, including awareness and action at the intersection of climate and human health.

More than 16 years later, Maya Health Alliance has grown into a full-service healthcare organization caring for more than 9,000 patients a year in homes and community centers across nine departments in Guatemala’s Central Highlands. The 90+ member team of doctors, nurses, and community health workers is 90% women and 84% Maya. Program areas include Women’s Health, Maternal & Infant Health, Early Childhood Development & Nutrition, and Integrated Care for people with diabetes and other chronic diseases, along with children with complicated conditions that would otherwise go untreated.

With these foundations, Maya Health Alliance is achieving what the founders set out to accomplish: delivering practical, sustainable, quality, community-based care that is closing health gaps and building equity. In the communities where Maya Health programs operate, rates of child malnutrition and maternal deaths from childbirth have dropped dramatically.

Cervical cancer is being detected earlier and treated more effectively, and more women and men have access to family planning information and resources. And yet, much work remains!

Community health workers receive extensive, ongoing

training and resources to provide high-quality, state-of-the art care. In the Mobile Maternal & Infant Health Program, for example, traditional midwives use a smartphone application paired with simple tools like a blood pressure cuff and ultrasound to detect problems during pregnancy early so mothers and babies can get timely care to prevent serious complications and deaths. Nurses in the Women’s Health program are transitioning from Pap to more accurate HPV (human papillomavirus) testing for cervical cancer, a leading cancer killer of women in Guatemala, and they have been trained to provide thermocoagulation treatment in the field, sparing women a costly and frightening trip to the hospital.
