City of Logan Mayor Darren Power is urging residents whose homes were affected by flooding earlier this year to register for a new buy-back and funding program.
The Resilient Homes Fund will assist eligible homeowners to repair or retrofit their homes to incorporate flood-resilient design and materials in liveable rooms or areas.
Homes in high-risk areas that aren’t suitable for retrofitting may take part in a buyback scheme. The fund is jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments.
Mayor Power said homeowners who experienced flooding should consider registering their interest.
“Unfortunately, much of South East Queensland was built on a floodplain and some areas of Logan are particularly prone to flooding,” Councillor Power said.
“This initiative is opportunity to fix some of the more high-risk homes and make our city safer for residents in low-lying areas.
“More than $700 million dollars has been set aside but there are many places in Queensland that are eligible so it’s important our flood-impacted residents don’t delay in registering their interest.”
For home buybacks, funding will be provided to Council to purchase the house and land. The land would then be re-zoned into non-liveable uses such as open space and green corridors. For further information visit Resilient Homes Fund.
The fund is administered by the Queensland Government. Logan City Council cannot answer inquiries relating to the program. Nearly 200 homes in the City of Logan were flooded in the February/March rain event. In response, Council launched a flood recovery package that supported impacted residents, small businesses and the environment.
Welcome to July issue of the Guides! Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, is quoted as saying “change is the only constant in life.”
Over the past couple of years so much about our working and daily lives has changed it is hard at times to recall what ’normal’ was. And now moving into the new financial year, as a small team working in Logan City, we are privileged and proud to be part of an amazing city and people. From local coffee shops, butchers to dentists and lawyers alike, everyone has been doing their bit making sure our most vulnerable and isolated in community continue to get the care they need whilst supporting each other, acknowledging personal & business fears and challenges.
For us as a small local media organisation to have witnesses the power of teamwork and at first hand seeing and being part of ‘The Local Supporting Locals’ we are forever grateful and proud to be a part of this wonderful city we call Logan!
And speaking of community, you will find in this publication the outcome of the ‘Best Cup In Logan’ where so many of you have passionately voted & commented. It was very very close and assure you that every cup is a winner. We are blessed with abundance of cafes around us, a place of gathering and sharing smiles.

Logan is home to a wide variety of fauna, but their habitat was threatened when the Brisbane City Council announced it was upgrading Compton Road, making it a dual carriageway from the Gateway entrance to Acacia Street. The Greenbank Military Training Area was already on the register of the National Estate, as it was an area rich in flora as well as many types of fauna, and Karawatha Forest was placed on the register in 1997. It has an area of 4,500 hectares, and is home to many endangered species, due to land clearing for houses.
So, when the plans were announced in 2004 for the duplication of Compton Road, concerns were raised as to how the animals in the Karawatha Forest could get access to bushland to the north, through Kuraby Forest to the Bulimba Creek catchment.
And so it was that the overhead bridge was constructed and planted with thick vegetation. In addition, an underground drain was built
beneath the road, and a trapeze-like wire was strung over the bridge as well. Kangaroos and wallabies were expected to use the bridge, frogs and bandicoots could use the underpass and possums and gliders could swing across on the wire. Monitoring has shown that echidnas also cross the road safely. It has been estimated that there has been a 77% reduction of animals killed on the road and a 66% reduction in birds killed.
But it wasn’t a cheap exercise. The road duplication cost $2.6 million and the animal crossing cost $2.9 million.
It is not uncommon in family law proceedings (and usually for selfish or malicious reasons), for a party to try to increase the size and value of the pool of assets for division to claim that: -
• The loan from the other party’s parents (i.e. the Bank of Mum and Dad) is a sham/ it is not real/ it will never be repaid.
• The loan has been forgiven.
• The loan from the Bank of Mum and Dad was not a loan at all, it was a gift made to both of us.
The treatment of these questions can have a significant effect on the division of assets between spouses and can reduce the chances of the Bank of Mum and Dad being repaid.
Sadly, it is often the case these agreements are sparsely documented, if at all. The problem then becomes proving the loan exists and what are its terms. This can be expensive and it increases the risk it will not be regarded as genuine.
So how does the Bank of Mum and Dad go about protecting itself if it wants the loan repaid?
1. Document the terms of the loan, and what will be the consequences of default, with a properly drawn Loan Agreement.
2. Be mindful of the limitation periods to take action to recover the loan. It may be better to record the loan as repayable on demand rather than as a fixed term loan.
3. Take security (i.e. a Mortgage or a Caveat) for the loan at the time when the Loan Agreement is signed.
4. Ensure the Borrowers obtain independent legal advice before signing the Loan Agreement.
If the loan has been advanced without a written Loan Agreement, it isn’t too late and it is better to document it than not. At Madsen Law, we have specialist family lawyers who can help with the simple steps to protect the Bank of Mum and Dad.

y bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep. The more I give to thee The more I have, for both are infinite.”
complex approach to how we picture love and its symbols. The above quote belongs to Juliet in the famous balcony scene of the second act when she and Romeo exchanged their pure promises of eternal love. She compares her love to the infinite of the sea.
Love is the human concept which describes what we feel for the people with whom we have a very strong connection. Art, in particular jewellery, represents one of the main ways we choose to express or explain our love and emotions to the world, due to its infinite possibilities and affection.
When it comes to love, every story is different. How you met, your first date, when you first said “I love you.” Although there may be similarities, no two love stories are identical. There are many different types of love relationships. Think about it: How many people do you say, “I love you” to? There are those you love in your immediate family, and then there are those with whom you get into a love relationship. These relationships may lead to engagement and marriage, or they may not. Still, there is love there, and with love comes jewellery.
So when it comes time to celebrate your love, a regular, mass produced jewellery piece or ring just doesn’t seem to fit right. This is something that Larry from LC Jewellers knows all too well. Known for his handmade custom jewellery designs and master restoration work, Larry and his team of experts have worked with each of their clients to create something unique and special for them; ever since opening L.C Jewellers – Master Repairers and Custom Jewellery in 2004.
“The creative process starts when a client comes in and we start to create a drawing of the piece”, started Larry from LC Jewellers.
“We work with them to discover what they like and don’t like as well as observing what kind of jewellery they like wearing or what we think would suit them. The design and development stage is a collaborative process, between us and the client, which is based on open communication”.
“It all comes down to personal preference of design and feelings. What may be perfect for one person won’t be for another; everyone has their unique tastes, opinions and style. People also have different lifestyles that you should take into consideration when designing that ‘perfect’ piece.”
Being in the jewellery industry for over 45 years, Larry has had the opportunity to grow and develop into the master jeweller he is today. Completing his apprenticeship at Wallace Bishop in the late 1970s, before going on to work with several companies and jewellers, enhancing his skills, knowledge and experience throughout the years. In 2000, Larry was a winner of the Australian Jewellery Design Awards.
It’s his years of experience that have helped him and his team, Tanita and Rebecca, experts in their own right deliver quality work time and time again – whether it’s a custom build or a restoration piece.
“I am passionate about helping people with their jewellery dreams. As a master jeweller, I can create something amazing and personal for them to treasure over the years or repair a sentimental item. I love designing, creating and restoring pieces for individuals” stated Larry.
However, it is not all smooth sailing, with each piece of jewellery comes its own set of challenges; which Larry and his team work to overcome. Applying their years of experience, knowledge and skill, has caused them to be known as the ‘Master Repairers’.
“Some of the hardest repairs to do are the ones those other jewellers or someone else has messed up when trying to fix it, before sending it to us. We are really good at what we do and as far as we’re concerned, if we can’t repair it no one can”, stated Larry.
“We’re here to help everybody and we can cater to all budgets. Anyone who needs their jewellery repaired, cleaned, resized or remodelled. In addition, if you are looking for that personal custom piece, our expert team are always happy to help with all your design wants and desires.”
L.C. Jewellers offer a range of services including:
• Jewellery Repairs, Restoration & Cleaning
• Handmade Custom Jewellery Design
• Jewellery Resizing & Remodelling
• Source all stones including Natural and Lab Grown Diamonds.

LC JEWELLERS Est. 2004The coffee results are out! Each month, Logan City Guides has put together a competition to encourage locals to have fun and go out & support local businesses!
In May, we asked the public who serves up the ‘Best Cup in Logan!’
After a month long battle and 1,428 votes to be exact, the results are finally in!
It was a tight run to the finish line and the win ner, by the slimmest margin of 5 votes was … drum roll please.
Simply Beans located in Underwood!
Closely followed by Extraction Artisan Coffee, trailing only by a couple of votes.
Third place was taken by Blackout Coffee and Catering located in Crestmead & Meadow brook.
We'd also like to give a special shout out to Hit Cafe and Moonlight Bandit, who were so close! It was a pleasure to showcase each of these venues and their amazing coffee. A huge thank you to everyone that took part. It was such a close race. Please continue to support these local venues as they put their heart and soul into their coffee!
Similar to the Battle of the Burgers, we realise that everyone has an opinion and a favourite, but let’s keep it classy and show nothing but love to all the participating businesses.
Idid it! I was onboard the first cruise to sail from Brisbane since the start of the pandemic, and let me tell you, it was the most incredible feeling being back on a ship and sailing out into the ocean.
When the four loud blasts sounded from the ship signalling our departure, I was very nearly in tears. It was hard to imagine through the last 826 days since cruising was shut down that this moment would happen.
Everyone was excited and happy to be there, and the Coral Princess staff certainly gave us a very warm welcome with staff on deck with claps and cheers a plenty as we stepped onto the ship.
Now, I know I write a fair bit about cruising but, being an avid cruiser, it would be remiss of me to not report on this departure which was also from the brand-new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal or BCIT as it’s commonly referred to.
It costs you no more to book a cruise with a Travel Agent than it does directly with a cruise line. You will receive personalised service all while supporting a locally owned small business.
Located at the mouth of the Brisbane River in Pinkenba, the building of the terminal began in 2017 and was completed in mid-2020 - bad timing, right? But it’s a fabulous terminal set over two storey’s, with an undercover plaza area and outdoor waterfront promenade. The 208m wharf can accommodate the largest cruise ships and will do just that when Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas docks in Brisbane for her cruising season.
There are over 900 paid car parking spaces which we utilised, parking in the P1 area which has cover and is closest to the terminal. A short walk (approx. 50 metres) and we were at the front entrance where we handed over our luggage. From that moment it only took 20 minutes – at most – and our feet were stepping onto the ship. A large part of this quick transition from shoreside to shipside is in large part thanks to the new technology the Princess ‘MedallionClass’ service brings.
What is the Princess ‘MedallionClass’ you ask? Princess MedallionClass is a 20cent sized device that can be worn several ways. Carry it in your complimentary lanyard or purchase additional accessories to wear it as a bracelet, necklace or clip. When you book a voyage on a MedallionClass-enabled ship, you can get started right away. You enjoy benefits like expedited boarding, the best Wi-Fi at sea and service that finds you all from your wearable Medallion. I can assure you I got quite used to ordering a beverage from ANYWHERE on the ship and it
Helloworld Travel Rochedale, Locally owned and operated
being delivered to me….it’s not so fabulous when you get home and have to fetch yourself a drink though….
Our cruise was only short, one of their short getaways for those that are either time poor or wishing to ‘test the waters’ (pun intended), but it was fabulous. The ship itself is an older ship but if you look past the exterior as we should in all aspects of life, you will find fabulous food, enthusiastic and caring staff and plenty of entertainment options. I participated on the first night in the ‘Yes/No’ quiz and unfortunately didn’t take out the prize – but it was FUN!
There were plenty of health and safety features onboard including mask wearing in dining venues and in lifts, regular cleaning and enforced hand washing and overall I felt that they had the new ‘normal’ well under control.
If you’re considering a cruise or you’re an avid cruising like myself, please reach out to discuss your next cruise holiday.
Until next month, Tina
Art can be tremendously beneficial to your health and contribute to overall happiness and mental well-being. Visiting our More Art From Me Gallery or taking our paint and sip class, is the perfect excuse to spend a day doing something fun while improving health and quality of life for you and your loved ones. We’ve looked at the added value of the arts and how they can keep us happy and in good mental health:
Creating art boosts self-esteem and provides a sense of accomplishment in adults and children. When you complete a creative project, you may feel a boost of dopamine which can increase drive, improve concentration, and just make you feel good!
Another benefit of art is that it encourages creative thinking and imagination in kids and adults. It also enhances problem-solving skills. Because there is no wrong answer in art, people are encouraged to imagine their own solution. This type of flexible thinking stimulates your brain and prepares it for complicated functions in the same ways that learning a new language does.
One of the main purposes of having a creative outlet is to express yourself as a way to cope with distress. Especially when it comes from general stress or other mental health issues like depression and anxiety disorders.
“
I don’t want to do this activity because it’s too hard, I don’t understand, and it’s a waste of my time; It’s not helping me; I’d rather be doing something else!”
Sadly, these are familiar statements we often hear in learning environments around the world. However, you would think, after centuries of recorded history that we would have enough information and evidence by now about “The most effective ways people learn” for education institutions to be seeing excellent results amongst their students. Unfortunately, today, what we are seeing and hearing amongst students from prep to university is underachievement, disengagement and confusion.
To really enjoy learning something, the participant needs certain ingredients: time, connection to the activity, and a teacher, encourager and mentor who not only is knowledgeable in the field of study being taught, but more importantly, values the participant more than the activity itself.
Students learn best when they have time to enjoy and complete activities. Understanding and interacting meaningfully with these tasks, the participant will be able to enjoy engaging with their learning and connecting it with their current skills and knowledge. This
learning success is further enhanced when the importance of the learner as a person, is valued, nurtured and prioritized more than the activity itself. The final ingredient needed to enhance the love of learning is a knowledgeable, well-supported, enthusiastic teacher, encourager and mentor.
Without these essential ingredients, the love of learning is lost and every learning endeavour turns to failure. However, a learning environment that treasures these ingredients, looks like this: students working together and participating with excitement and joy; and it sounds like this:
“I want to do this activity because it’s interesting and helpful. I understand what we are doing. I want to finish. I’m definitely adding to my knowledge and skills, and I am enjoying contributing and helping others too. I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else! I understand how to learn. I love learning!”
What are your thoughts? We reached out to Logan locals and here is what they have to say.
Jobe Latsinos, PRD Realty: With our population staying in work longer, staying active longer, and living longer in general, todays “Senior Citizen” is very different to that of the 1930’s. Today’s 50 is just starting the fun stuff and getting ready for the wind down. As the old saying goes, you’re only as old as you feel.
Elizabeth Morrow: LOL. It's just young people wanting to be in charge more quickly, though they haven't the experience or understanding of how to do it correctly. But if they can convince people that once they get to a certain age, they become useless, then perhaps their greedy grasp can come sooner. The age group that's considered “senior citizen” changes every few generations. There's always some form of age
discrimination. My generation was known for saying “Don't trust anyone over 30.” As soon as they reached their 30s and beyond, realization of how silly that mantra was hit home. When those who are currently saying that a certain age is worthy of being viewed as a senior citizen reach that “magic” age, that age will change.
Rather than be concerned about such a fluid designation in age, just sit back and enjoy your life. Stay healthy, limber, and inquisitive all your days, and age will always be chasing you, but never catching up.
Deborah Anapo, Simply Beans: Certainly not. We started our small home coffee roasting business in our 50's which has grown into the award-winning business it is today employing 20 staff and is supplying coffee around Logan and Queensland.
How is it that people at age 50 are considered senior citizens? They still have “50 more years” to go.....Actress, Sofia Vergara, turned 50 this year. Actor and wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned 50 in May this year.
50 then and 50 now: Photo of George Clooney taken at 53. He’s shown here with the late Jim Backus, who is most famous for playing millionaire Thurston Howell III on “Gilligan’s Island,” a role he took on at age 51. Photo of Courteney Cox at the age of 50, shown next to Frances Bavier, who cultivated a much older look when she began playing the beloved Aunt Bee on “The Andy Griffith Show” in her 50s.
Jorgen Pallesen: In average they only got 25 more years to go. At 50 muscle mass has decreased a lot, neural decay has taken its toll and you are much slower, etc.
Marcus Goutiere, Death Wish Customs: My beater is 62 and he still smashes the work so I would say no.
Steven Ussery: I am 66, and to me a 50-yearold is still young. Hell, my 93-year-old dad thinks that I am still young. See how that works?
Albert Wells: Well…I think a senior citizen is 60 years of age and older. As for 50… I was not aware that was senior citizen territory. Most are still working hard at that age. I do like you’re thinking, however, that we will all live to be 100 years old! Perhaps modern medicine and healthful living will let me go that far instead of the around 83 years of age like the rest of my family.
Duncan Wood: Middle aged yes, but definitely they are not considered senior citizens. That used to start at the age most people drew their pensions and was from 65 upwards. Nowadays, people live much longer, often
carrying on working for a few more years, and are generally fitted and with more interests, so I think for many people you could add on at least another 10 years and talk of 70 or 75 onwards, though many of us are still mentally alert and kept busy when we are in our eighties.
Janeen Vosper, Speech Perfect: I don’t know of any 50 year old who would consider themselves a ‘senior’ citizen. As more people are now giving up jobs and starting their own businesses in their fifties to create something important of their own, they don’t connect to the concept of being a senior. They leave that to the eighty year olds.
Sam Dauncey, Right at Home Greater Logan: We work in the home care industry, and the age that dictates if someone gets home care funding from the Government is 65. I believe it would be appropriate to consider everyone over the age of 50’s in the senior citizen category.

Doing your tax might seem like a chore, but it can mean receiving a substantial tax refund for many Australians.
It can be fun to treat yourself with your tax refund, but there is always that nagging voice in the back of our minds telling us to spend it wisely. Adding value to your home is a smart way to invest your tax refund, and you don’t need to embark on a major renovation to do so.
Don’t let it go to waste. Here are some ways to invest it in your home and reap the rewards for years to come.
In the past couple of weeks, we have been asked many tim think of the rate rises, what's going to happen to the mark and why now after all the world trauma of Covid 19, new w after effects that have followed in the past couple of mont definitely got us thinking! Is it really a bad thing to happen
For the gift that keeps on giving, treat yourself to solar. With energy prices soaring and the rising cost of living, it makes sense to do something that will provide you with more control over your household budget in the long term.
In layman's terms, raising interest rates makes borrow more expensive, but it can also lead to more returns on super (which earn interest on growth). When borrowing becomes expensive, this can also me for goods and services.
You receive a credit on your power bill each quarter by exporting the unused power your solar panels have generated back into the grid. In 2021, the average bill credit for households with solar in Australia was $280 per quarter. That’s quite the saving, and most people find their solar installation has paid for itself within four years.
Banks 'create' money when they lend money to borrowers.
Swapping all your lights over to LED lighting will save you money and improve your carbon footprint. LEDs use about 75% less energy than halogen light bulbs and last 5 to 10 times longer, greatly reducing replacement costs and the number of light bulbs ending up in landfill. Depending on what type of light fittings you have, you may need an electrician to help make the swap.
As an example: There is a bank with $0. Jill puts $1,000,00 The bank lends that $1,000,000 to Jack, which he keeps in with the bank. When Jill checks her account she has $1,00 Jack checks his account he has $1,000,000. Therefore, $1, been created by the bank. When Banks create too much m they give out too many loans, it causes inflation and drives for goods and services. This is because, as more and more given, more and more money is chasing the same goods a Therefore, money becomes worth less relative to the good Inflation is really bad for the economy - if inflation gets too collapses the economy for good often setting back the co and decades.
Painting your house can breathe fresh life into your home, and it can be inexpensive if you are willing to do the work.
The easiest way to control inflation is to make it harder for money. Interest rates going up makes it more expensive fo get a loan. Therefore, as interest rates rise, the number of loans out decreases As there are fewer and fewer loans, in decreases and prices stabilize, which is fundamental to th functioning.
If your house is already just the way you like it, perhaps the best thing you can do with your tax return is put it in your mortgage offset account. With interest rates on the rise, it is wise to reduce the interest you pay by getting ahead on your mortgage and establishing a buffer for a rainy day.

Know what to look for when choosing a facility that best satisfies your training needs.
Finding the right gym for you can be compared to forging a new relationship. With a bit of personal reflection, pre-planning, and some vetting, you’ll be on the path to what could be a match made in heaven (at least when it comes to this key element of your fitness journey).
Remember, you are investing your time, money, and energy into a gym and you need to be cer tain that you’ve made the best choice for you and your training goals. You may be enticed
to base your decision off of online reviews or friends’ recommendations, and while that’s an excellent starting point, there should be a few more components to consider.
Go ahead and judge a book by its cover (or the inside cover). It’s hard to see all the bells and whistles of a gym from the outside, so just doing a drive by won’t cut it. Go see the insides for yourself, especially during a time of day you feel you would visit. What are your first impressions? What are your instincts telling you? Take note of the layout, headcount of gym goers, cleanliness, etc. If there is anything that stands out to you that you can’t live with or
you see being a problem, cross it off your list. And fire away with questions toward your tour guide–that’s what they are there for.
Sizing up gym staff as a whole is a potentially unfair assessment. Feel free to ask what staff qualifications include or at the very least if there is a go-to person if you have general fitness questions. The staff aids in setting the tone of the gym.
Equipment is one of the main reasons someone joins a gym. Knowing what types of equipment you currently need along with what you’d poten tially like to use in the future is vital. While on your tour, take note of what’s available, overall condition, and quantity of more popular pieces, such as squat racks, machines, and treadmills.
If you’re someone who needs instruction or structure, you may be looking for a personal trainer or a class or two to throw into your workout mix. Locker rooms, showers, saunas, and such can be considered luxuries at some gyms. If any of these things make your must-have list, confirm their availability and cost (if any) before you sign on the dotted line.
The members of a gym are difficult to assess from the onset of a tour, unless you’re looking for one that markets to a particular group. You may be spending multiple hours a week in the gym, and no matter what, you want to be sure you’re in a welcoming, comfortable, and en couraging environment that will only make you want to come back again and again.

Now in its 15th year, LUMINOUS is one of Queensland’s largest welcome events, captur ing the imagination of Queenslanders with its spectacular use of light to symbolise hope and create welcome for new Queenslanders.
The LUMINOUS Lantern Parade is now an iconic event on the annual Queensland events calendar, held in conjunction with Queensland Day (6 June) to celebrate Queensland’s birth day and our unique culture, heritage, people, places and industries.
The spectacular lantern procession began at Flowstate, South Bank, before winding its way on a short and symbolic walk down the prome nade taking in the sites of the city skyline.
The Parade ended at the South Bank Piazza for a vibrant World music concert, with the lanterns bathed in the luminous light sym bolising welcome and hope for many people from all over the world, especially our newest Queenslanders.
I was lucky enough to be able to take part in the Lantern Parade in South Bank, alongside my mum and sister. We were among the hundreds who braved the cold and lined the streets, in our warmest jackets and winter gear to watch (and cheer) as each nationality paraded past. Each culture was on display, with several adorned in their traditional outfits, while some delighted the crowd with traditional music and dancing. I was amazed at the amount of detail and effort that went into creating the lanterns. Some of my favourite lanterns from the night were the ones shaped like different animals.
This year Multicultural Australia featured LUMINOUS in neighbourhoods across Brisbane and in Toowoomba and Rockhampton, spreading the message of welcome across Queensland. One of the neighbourhoods that took part was Logan.
On the 11th of June, people came together (despite the cold weather) at the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group at Meakin Park in Slacks Creek to celebrate and welcome Logan’s diverse community.
From 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm, locals were delight ed, amazed and entertained by an ambience of beautiful lanterns, live music, cultural dancing, fun activities and a delicious sausage sizzle.
It was a fantastic night to be involved in and I would love to see it continue well into the future, in all communities across Queensland.

Serves 3 | Prep 15m | Cook 1h 15m
Ingredients
450g chicken breast (cooked/poached)

1/2 tsp dried thyme | 2 garlic cloves | 60ml white wine | 1/4 cup flour | 1/3 cup of grated Parmesan black pepper | 3/4 cup of frozen peas
2 sheets of puff pastry | 1 egg (lightly whisked)
2 cups chicken/vege stock
1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium high heat. Add garlic and onion, cook for 2 minutes. Add thyme, carrot and celery, cook until carrot is softened.

With winter upon us and rain ravaging many parts of the country, it’s a prime time for mould growth.
In laundries and lurking at the back of wardrobes, bathrooms and beneath floors, mould is a common issue that affects all kinds of buildings – including our homes.
So, if you’re living in a rental property it's important to know whether mould your responsibility or your landlord’s.
It turns out the answer isn’t so clear-cut, with liability depending on what caused the mould to crop up.
Why does mould grow, and why is it a problem? Mould is a type of organism that feasts on organic matter and thrives in damp environments. It can get into your home in multiple ways: through open windows or vents, through your air con, or even via your clothes or shoes.
Once it’s inside your home, mould doesn’t need a lot to survive – just enough dirt, dust, or other
organic materials it can consume, plus a highhumidity environment to help it grow.
Mould tends to surface in areas that experience high moisture levels, like bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens.
But it can also appear in other areas, such as the bedroom, living room and, rather frustratingly, at the back of the closet –sometimes resulting in mould all over your clothes.
If you’re a renter, this could very well be considered property damage, depending on the circumstances that led to the mould problem. Are renters or landlords responsible for fixing mould?
There’s no black and white answer to this one. Responsibility really comes down to what caused it.
If the mould is found to be a result of negligence on the renter’s part – such as not using proper ventilation when showering or cooking – then accountability lies with them. But if there are structural faults in the home that led to mould – like a leaky roof or rising damp – then it’s up to the landlord or agent to fix.
Given the amount of wet weather experienced by many parts of the country it's especially important that properties have adequate drainage and are maintained properly by the landlord.
As a renter, it’s up to you to keep the property reasonably clean, not cause or permit damage (be it intentionally or through negligence) and alert your landlord or agent as soon as possible about any damage to the home.
In a practical sense, this means:
• Using proper ventilation – such as exhaust fans, range hoods and windows – when showering, bathing, doing laundry, drying clothes indoors and cooking
• Cleaning up pools of water that form on
and around sinks and basins
• Allowing carpet to properly dry out if any liquid spills on it
• Wiping up condensation from walls, windows, mirrors, and other hard
• Closing windows and doors when it’s raining outside
• Cleaning the home regularly and thoroughly
• Letting your landlord or agent know (in writing) about mould issues as soon as they arise

In the first article on this topic, it was mentioned that the first sale of land in Beenleigh was at the old site of the town at what is now known as Eagleby. In this article the second sale at the new site is featured.
The sale occurred on 27th September 1870 and 31 lots were offered for sale ranging from about one acre to just over five acres all at the price of £4.0 per acre.
The map below shows most of the lots and their location. (This map was produced in 1916 and shows the railway line and station, which of course did not open until 1885 with the extension to Southport in 1889.)
Surveyors used a chain of 100 wire rods or links each 7.92 inches (201.168 mm) long. This was known as the surveyor’s chain or Gunter’s chain. A ‘standard’ quarter-acre block is 1 chain wide and 20 chain deep, or 66 feet by 165 feet. Thus, the surveyors could accurately measure the lots, for example Lot 29 is five acres, two roods and 28 perches that at £4.0.0 per acre cost £22.14.0.
We all have busy lives, and some of us just cannot devote the time to bigger dogs. And there is plenty to love about small dog breeds. You can sit them on your lap, they don't eat as much, and are quicker to walk!
Take a look at the list below for some of the most popular small dog breeds; whose small bodies fit inside tiny apartments and whose gentle temperaments complement their owners' busy lifestyles.
First and foremost, this small dog breed is known for its bravery, followed by its stubborn nature. Despite the fact that their sausageshaped bodies fit well in small spaces and require only a 30-minute walk each day, dachshunds may require patience and persistence when housetraining.
Boston Terriers are sometimes referred to as "Little American Gentlemen" because of the tuxedo colouring of their coats. However, their gentlemanly charm goes beyond their short-
This breed is both loyal and lively, making it a good choice for families with children and elderly members, as well as for city apartments and suburban homes.
A Boston Terrier exhibits a distinct sensitivity to human emotions despite being larger and boisterous than a typical lapdog. As a human, he would totally be played by Gerard Butler, a tough guy with a soft side.
In spite of its often sober appearance, the French Bulldog hides a cheeky personality - not too wild and boisterous to live in an apartment.
Due to its small, muscular frame, this dog requires little exercise and little bathing (although the abundant wrinkles need to be wiped down on a regular basis).
If you're planning on traveling a lot, the Frenchie may be the right small dog breed for you because of their adaptability.
There's nothing quite like a King Charles Cavalier, with silky coats and lazy tendencies!
A Cavalier King Charles enjoys afternoon naps on the couch with a homebody family or a senior owner. This dog's delicate frame enjoys low-impact activity, while her sweet disposition warms to strangers easily.
These scruffy cuties were once coveted by the royal women of Malta, who used to smuggle them into their sleeves and snuggle up with them in bed. Maltese terriers make spirited lapdogs and are known for being fiercely loyal to their owners.
A single-coat breed, the Maltese does not shed but its grooming schedule includes weekly baths and cleaning of the "tear" stains known to gather on its muzzle.
The chihuahua is the perfect dog to accommodate a working professional's lifestyle. Its humble appetite, low-maintenance coat and toy size suit apartment life, away from children who may be too heavy-handed. The breed can be fiercely loyal to one master, making it a dedicated companion to older owners who live alone.

Abrighter tomorrow awaits the City of Logan as Logan City Council builds on recent achievements in its 2022/2023 Budget, which was delivered today.
The record $1.014 billion ‘Building on today for a brighter tomorrow’ budget celebrates the positive attributes residents love about the city – a city that is smart, active, safe, green and growing.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said Council was leading the way in South East Queensland by delivering critical infrastructure and quality services to the community.
“We enjoy something special in the City of Logan,” Councillor Power said.
“Where else can you enjoy urban and rural lifestyles, first-class facilities and a caring and connected community?
“Our city is affirming its reputation as for ward-thinking and ambitious. We are not afraid to chase greatness.
“Council is ahead of the game with recent investments in state-of-the-art technology to turn sewage into energy and fertiliser, as well as the new Kingston Butter Factory Cultural Precinct.
“Our business community is also becoming more innovative and entrepreneurial with emerging industries choosing to move to Logan for our ideal location and ready and reliable workforce.
“When we build on what we’ve already achieved, we can create a brighter future for coming generations, and that’s what today’s budget delivers.”
The 2022/2023 Budget invests in grassroots sport, the environment, innovation and infrastructure.
This includes:
• $38 million over five years to improve facilities at local sports clubs, with ongoing funding after that
• $9 million towards building an advanced recycling facility at Browns Plains in partnership with Ipswich and Redland councils
• Ongoing investment to develop the skills of young entrepreneurs
• $224.7 million in essential road and water infrastructure for a rapidly growing population.
As this year’s budget was prepared, Cr Power said his fellow Councillors recognised the value of investing money in programs that bring longterm success to the city.
“We’ve really considered where we should allo cate money so that it doesn’t just benefit people over the next 12 months,” he said.
“By planning towards how we want our city to look in the next five to 10 years, we’ve identified funding allocations that will improve quality of life and create a brighter tomorrow.”
Governance Chair, Deputy Mayor Natalie Will cocks, said Council continues to deliver an array of services to the community with efficiency, despite costs increasing.
“This year, we’ve seen the Brisbane CPI increase by 6 per cent in a year to the end of March, and everyone is feeling the impacts of higher fuel prices, including us.
“Additionally, the cost of materials for construc tion is through the roof, and we wear those costs when delivering infrastructure for the city.
“Council seeks alternative funding sources wherever possible, including grants from other levels of government, so we can keep rate rises to a minimum.
“Whether you visit our libraries, aquatic or sports centres, one of our many parks, play sport, turn on a tap, have a furry friend, put rubbish in your wheelie bin, visit a waste and recycling facility or drive on our roads, you are using facilities and services that need to be funded.
“Council staff deliver these services with a smile and are committed to the well-being of our community.
“We are proud of what we’re announcing in today’s budget, and I am proud of what we are delivering.
“And I thank my fellow Councillors and the Council staff who’ve worked hard behind the scenes for their diligence, support and advice.”
Key numbers from this year’s budget include:
• A 2.49 per cent bottom line increase for rate payers on the minimum general rate – $70.30 a year, or $1.35 a week (excludes state bulk water charge)
• A 4.29 per cent increase to the annual pen sioner remission, providing $379.20 for those on a full pension and $189.60 for a part-pension
• A 5 per cent discount for prompt payment
• No increases to the Council components of water and sewerage charges
• A $7 increase to the annual environment levy
• A 2.5% increase to the community services charge
• An expected modest operating surplus of $3.65 million (at June 30, 2023)
• Borrowings of $69 million and loan repay ments of $20.3 million

Only have the budget to renovate one room? Simon sheds a little light on which to choose.
So you've just bought your dream home and you've got a small amount of money left over to renovate – but which room should you renovate first? Renovating the kitchen or a bathroom can make a major impact on the way you live in a space, so it’s important to choose the right room to invest in for your needs.
Both kitchens and bathrooms can be expensive and challenging to renovate, so we asked interiors expert Simon to share his top tips and advice on how to choose which room to renovate first.
If you're renovation to sell, the kitchen should probably be first on your list because a shiny new one will please potential buyers and add to the value of your property.
Conversely, if you plan to stay put, the bathroom wins out because a little luxury in the wet area will be just what you need to soothe body and soul as you tackle the big-money renova tion of your personal food/entertainment hub down the track.
But before you decide, there are a few things you need to know…
Kitchens are about sustenance and socialis ing while bathrooms are personal spaces that should be peaceful and safe, but in all of this deliberating over what to do first, the big question to ask yourself is, who are you renovating for? If the answer is for yourself or the family, it's a decision for the heart and you will have to take into account your use of the kitchen and the bathroom.
If you're an Uber Eats ambassador and the kitchen doesn't see much use, you're more likely to get satisfaction out of a new bathroom
space. But if you're an entertaining king or queen, the kitchen is the hub of your home and should be seen to. It's the space that, if tthe functionality of your home for the better.
If you are renovating for a sale, however, it should purely be a numbers game, and getting the biggest bang for your buck is imperative for a successful renovation. Generally speaking, the best investment to make is in your kitchen, as more than half of all real-estate agents claim that this space is the best one to focus on for resale.
But having a buyer fall in love with your swish new kitchen isn't always that easy. The trick is to appeal to as many potential buyers as possible, as you don't want to be too polaris ing with your choices. This formula will differ depending on when and where you are selling, but generally consists of a practical layout and unoffensive finishes.

Camping in Queensland has always been quite a popular hobby for many generations, varying from beaches around Queensland’s picturesque coastlines to the rocky mountains of the scenic rim and many more.
One of the wonderful things about camping is that it is so accessible to everyone. If you’re a keen first-timer there are a few things that you will need to get started.
Accommodation:
Starting of course with accommodation. The classic camper will always go for a tent; however, many contemporary varieties are stemming from the classic, which opens the camping experience up to many more people. Such as a camper trailer, caravan or for the real “upper class”, ‘glamping’.
Destination:
Your chosen destination will rely heavily on your form of ‘accommodation’. For example, if you have a tent your options for a site are far LESS limited. However, you must still keep in mind the toileting situation (when you gotta go, you gotta go, so it’s important to have a public or portable toilet in the vicinity).
If you are taking a camper trailer (provided you have an adequate vehicle to tow the trailer) you must try to find places that have easily accessible sites to enter with the extra towing weight. Caravans, on the other hand, are far MORE limited due to their size and weight which can make it harder to access some sites. In addition, many camping areas (national parks/4x4 parks/camping grounds) may not allow such vehicles.
Overall, when finalising your site selection, finding an open, flat area will be the best for your experience.
Everyone loves their sleep. There is nothing worse than an uncomfortable mattress to reside on at the end of the day. The weather and seasons will impact your experience, so a comfortable and warm bed will be crucial.
Some general bedding options are blow-up mattresses, stretchers and self-inflating roll-out mats. Good brands include Wanderer, Kings and Dune.
Many people just use bedding off of their beds at home with additional blankets if required.
Food: At the end of the day, food is a critical part of any trip. Some places may offer public kitchen spaces while others may not. If this is the case, then there are a few essentials that are typically used. These include eskies or car fridges to keep meat and other perishables cold, as well as barbecues or portable gas burners.
These examples are a good start if you are just a beginner or if you’re sleeping in tents and don’t have a camper trailer or caravan. Caravans offer different ranges of items such as bigger fridges and ovens.

When deciding what food to bring, canned food is a simple but handy option; not only does it have a longer shelf life it also is much easier to store.
Reusable plastic plates and old cutlery from home are the best things to bring for eating and cooking. This goes for cooking utensils also.
Cutlery/Table + Seating: Being comfortable on your trip is critical, especially after a long day of exploring. That is where a comfortable chair is vital. My preference for the chair is the ‘Wanderer moon chair’, which you can buy from BCF. Some good brand of chairs includes Wanderer, Oz trail and Kings.
Fold-out tables are also a highly recommended item which can also be bought from places like BCF, Anaconda and Bunnings. Some good brands of tables include Wanderer, Oz trail and Kings.
Places:
Some camping locations are dependent on the seasons but are still fun either way. Here are a few great locations to visit even in the winter months: Scenic Rim
Lake Wivenhoe Camp Undulla Farm stays such as Lake Haigslea farm
So this winter, why not go out, brave the cold and explore some of the amazing scenery that we right here in our back yard.
If you’ve been online, or basically any social media recently, you may have heard about skincare slugging. The name may not be super-appealing, but trust us, the skincare technique is not nearly as scary as it sounds.
Popular in Korean skincare, Skincare slugging is the process of covering the skin with an occlusive product such as Vaseline or a very heavy cream moisturizer and keeping it on overnight. And the name is actually pretty selfexplanatory. The name ‘slugging’ was adopted because it looks similar to having slug slime covering your face.
Although it’s a new ‘hot’ skincare trend, the theory behind slugging has been around for a
long time. Surprisingly, slugging is skin-safe for more skin types than you might think, because petroleum jelly doesn’t clog pores. Who knew?
“Putting Vaseline on your skin is not only okay but a great idea, especially for dry skin since it’s a great moisturizer for preventing trans epidermal water loss,” says Dr. Markowitz, an Associate Professor of Dermatology.
“Vaseline or similar products that are thick and do not contain ceramides or oils are noncomedogenic, meaning they don’t clog pores.” Those with dry, normal, or even combination skin might find it helps lock in moisture, even making your other hydrating skincare products work more effectively.
But Dr. Markowitz warns, “Very oily skin types do not benefit from a thick glistening emollient.” If you have oily skin, stick to oilfree or lightweight moisturizer!! Those with acne-prone skin may also want to minimize or skip this treatment altogether, since the use of petrolatum jelly (Vaseline) can exacerbate breakouts.
