THE DAISY HILL KOALA

CENTRE By Hazel Hillier, Retired Teacher

B

uilt by the Queensland Government at the edge of the Daisy Hill Conservation Park in 1995, the Koala Centre has always been a place where sick and injured koalas have been taken to recuperate before being released into the wild again. It was extensively refurbished and expanded in 2009 and again in 2018. It is also an information centre about other Australian wildlife. It is now a large centre built on three levels with outdoor and indoor walkways between each and is wheelchair accessible as there are no steps. Along the walls of the interior walkways are posters and charts of information about koalas etc. On one level there is a theatrette, which plays films about koalas and other Australian wildlife, and on another level is a large weighing scale for people to add how many leaves they think a koala would get through in one day. (The answer is 500 gm, but the leaves are high in toxicity and low in nutrients. The leaves are hard to chew and hard to digest, and the amount of protein in them is the equivalent of a small bowl of cereal.) As a result, they don’t have much energy, which is why we mostly see them asleep,

8 | Logan Guide

except at their mealtimes. In addition, they are nocturnal animals and move mostly at night. Of the 900 varieties of eucalypts in Australia, they eat leaves from 120 varieties, but only 14 of them regularly. Their main “enemies” are cars and dogs. In 2022, more than 270 were hit by cars and more than 80 were attacked by dogs. And smaller habitats, caused by expanding housing, is another contributing factor to their declining numbers. On another note, in my backyard are two really tall gum trees that are protected because they are trees that koalas like. I hear one more often than I see one, but I do have photos of them sitting high up in the trees.

HAPPINESS

IS AN INSIDE JOB! By Seija Tupila, Holistic Counsellor Spiritual Mindset Coach

D

o you want to feel happy & energized from the moment you wake up till you fall asleep each night?

Sounds a bit fanciful right, like trying to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! I smile as I write this as I once tried chasing a rainbow through the back streets of Springwood that seemed to land right where I was headed only to be a mirage; but I did end up in ‘Light Street’ which seemed like a fitting synchronicity at that time, and I have dreamt

of standing right underneath a rainbow being showered in all its glorious colours with the pot of golden coins right there alongside me. Ok now that was just a side note now let’s get to the heart of this article. The truth is happiness is an inside job and studies proves that stress lowers the immune system and happiness increases it! So, saying stress less, think positively doesn’t help if you’re feeling stuck in overwhelm and you don’t know how to change it but what I can tell you is this, it is possible and it is our personal responsibility to shift from these lower vibrations into higher vibrational feel-good practices/habits to create our own inner peace and happiness! I want to share with you some very simple, fun, feel good ideas that I practice & incorporate into my daily schedule to help elevate your life making it lighter, brighter and happier from day 1- guaranteed! HOW TO RAISE YOUR VIBRATION? Before you reach for your phone in the morning (apart from the alarm) try letting your feet touch the ground, take some deep breaths in & out and notice how you feel in your body, breath into the parts that call for your attention, what is it trying to tell you (this is ‘conscious’ embodiment), greet your partner/pet, have a drink of water, warm drink.. *Your phone will still be

12 | Logan Guide

there when you get to it however it’s imperative to give yourself this ‘you/self-reflective time’ before the day begins. Eat fresh, live & colourful foods. (Think in terms of the colours of the rainbow to get the optimum amount of nutrients, antioxidants to charge-up your immune system). Get amongst nature whenever possible, walk through the bush, let your bare feet connect mother earth as she can neutralize the ions and magnetic field in and around your body. (Cleanse and strengthen). Say no when you mean no (respect your boundaries, you are important).

Mention the code INTRO and receive one free meal to the value of $9.50. New customers only*

Say yes to invitations, new hobbies, projects (variety is the spice of life). Say sorry, only when you truly mean it. (people can sense insincerity). Dress in colours that make you feel good (introducing different colours elevates your mood). Bring live plants into your home (not only does it look lovely it oxygenates the air). Call someone you haven’t connected with in a while (let them know you care). Pat and play with your pet (they love spending quality time with you). Have alcohol free days more often (take a brisk walk under the starry night). Drink more water (hydrate to flush out toxins and support you energetically). Disconnect from your phone and social media and make your bedroom a phone scrolling free zone. (Consider that your bedroom is a sanctuary for rest, sleep, and rejuvenation only). I hope you can incorporate some of these practices into your daily life because I promise if you do, you will feel and radiate more happiness and discover the positive flow-on effect this has on not only you but all those around you! “Look after Yourself”

WHY SOLAR PANEL

CLEANING

MATTERS

A

dorning rooftops and industrial facilities across the country, solar power has become a common sight. Yet, the critical role of maintaining clean solar panels often slips from our minds. This is where professional solar panel cleaning services step in, ensuring that these panels operate at their best, especially under the scorching Australian sun. Debunking the Self-Cleaning Myth It’s a common misconception that solar panels are self-cleaning and require no maintenance due to their hydrophobic surface. While this surface repels water, it does little to prevent dirt, dust, and debris from accumulating over time. Clean solar panels are indispensable because their efficiency hinges on an unobstructed surface to absorb sunlight effectively. Studies have shown that dirty solar panels can produce from 30 - 50% less electricity than clean ones. Why Choose Professional Cleaning Enhanced Efficiency: Expert cleaners use the right tools and techniques to ensure optimal cleanliness, resulting in increased energy production. Prolonged Lifespan: Professional cleaning prevents the buildup of contaminants that can corrode or damage the panels, ensuring they last for years without issues.

WELLNESS NG WITH US had the pleasure of meeting a lovely Japanese Spitz, whose owner graciously agreed to share the happiness with the Logan City guides community. In this era of 'heightened cost of living pressures,' many individuals find themselves grappling with elevated stress levels. Research has highlighted the remarkable stress-reducing benefits of simply petting a furry companion, which can lead to lower stress and blood pressure. These loyal friends have the innate ability to help us unwind and manage stress more effectively, especially during periods of heightened pressure and uncertainty. Pets can become companions and provide a sense of purpose, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Having a pet can help you cope better in challenging situations and lower your stress levels. It's a well-known fact that walking your dog can also enhance your fitness levels and contribute to improved heart health. Studies have shown that there is a deep interconnection between animal and human health. Having pets can yield numerous advantages for your overall wellbeing, encompassing social, mental, and physical health.

‘Pets provide a sense of purpose’ Most pets require a daily routine of feeding, toileting, grooming, and exercise. Taking on the responsibility for their care can instill motivation, purpose, and a reason to start your day with enthusiasm. This can empower you to establish healthier daily routines and enhance your selfcare practices. Caring for your pet can be a significant boost to your self-esteem and overall well-being, effectively alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety. ‘Pets increase your opportunities for social interaction’ Pets create valuable opportunities for social engagement, such as fostering connections with your neighbours. Participating in pet-friendly events, visiting beaches or parks designated for pets can help expand your social network and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. So in featuring this beautiful Spitz on the February cover of the Guides, we hope to connect with you stronger in 2024, sharing your stories to make Logan City a better place!

Pets provide love and provide companionship. Pets can be affectionate and loyal. They give unconditional love and joy. They can provide a sense of stability to your family and become your best friend and beloved companion. They help you fulfil the basic human need to touch. Simply patting a pet can lower your heart rate. Your connection with your pet can also help reduce your loneliness or feelings of isolation.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR

DOG COOL IN SUMMER

T

he summer heat in Australia can often be extreme, so we need to ensure our furry friends are kept cool and comfortable. Here’s how you can ensure your dog is safe during the warm summer months. Summer haircut ‍ Ask your vet whether your dog should be having a summer haircut as not all breeds benefit from a trip to the groomer. Some breeds don’t need to be having any haircuts and doing so will disrupt their natural cooling system. Others will thrive from a trim or a clip, but make sure you seek advice to ensure it’s the right ‘style’ for your dog's coat type.

Water, water and more water One of the easiest ways to ensure that a dog takes in more fluid is to feed it more wet food during summer. Many dog owners feed a combination of wet (or canned food) and dry biscuits throughout the year but in summer, simply increase the wet and reduce the dry food so that they take in the same amount of nutrients but extra water as well. Know the signs of heatstroke ‍ Heatstroke can be fatal so it’s important to know the signs and call the vet if you think your dog may be suffering from the condition. Some signs may include:

Kibble ice-blocks ‍ Put some dry food biscuits in a container with water and freeze overnight. Not only is this a great distraction and enjoyable food challenge for your dog, but it cools them down and keeps them hydrated throughout a hot day.

• • • • •

Walk when it's cooler‍ Take your dog for a walk first thing in the morning or later before the sun goes down. In peak summer the road and footpaths are far too hot for your dogs paws and this can be extremely painful and rip their pads.

Excessive drooling or salivation Difficulty breathing • Weakness, lethargy A lack of appetite • Tacky, dry gums Vomiting and/or diarrhoea • Sunken eyes Discoloured gums appearing lighter coloured, even white instead of pinkish-red A weak pulse or the opposite, highly elevated heart rate could occur

Wowee Watery Wonder By Jasmin Lim

"H

er face was pale with fear and every single sinew was desperately gripping onto a branch… The twisting coils wrapped around her pinning her to the tree.” These bloodcurdling lines are from the diary of an Amazon Adventurer. The incredible Amazon River breaks many world records, easily surpassing many other rivers on Earth. Although it is a treacherous body of water, it supports the life of millions of living creatures as well as people who have also found its many uses. Do you know how many World Records the Amazon River has claimed? Amazingly, this massive watery snake has won 4 gold medals! Compared to any other river in the world, this mighty river flows with the most water. It even

28 | Logan Guide

Jasmin carries more water than the world’s 8 largest rivers put together! Flowing through the huge South American continent, the Amazon River also drains more land than any other river on Earth. Even more fascinating than the Amazon River’s world records are the plants and animals that live in and around it. Incredibly, the Amazon River has millions of dangerous plants and animals, more than any other river in the world. It has over 3000 known species of fish alone. One of these species, piranhas, are a top predator in this mighty river – one drop of blood can easily attract dozens of piranhas which then feast in a feeding frenzy, shredding their prey mercilessly. Other deadly creatures include caiman, anacondas, poisonous scorpions, and the dreaded mosquito worm which lays its eggs in the depths of your skin and when it hatches, it squirms and slowly eats away at your flesh. Many plants are also treacherous.

The poisonous liana plant’s sap is used by hunters on their arrowheads to bring down their prey. These are just a few of the millions of dangerous plants and animals that thrive in this lush yet deceptively beautiful environment. However, this river has its uses. Even though this river is very dangerous, it has multiple uses that help people live in such a wet habitat. Every day, people travel in their boats easily from one place to another, riding on this watery highway. Because of this movement of people up and down the river, most cities and towns are built along its banks. Furthermore, there are very few permanent roads built beside or across the river due to high rainfall, flooding and thick forests. Another important use of the Amazon River is the endless supply of free, fresh fish to eat as well as fresh water. Equally important is the generation of hydroelectricity which is a natural source of power supporting many homes and businesses. Significantly, this lush river snakes itself through mesmerizing scenery, surprising people with its World Records, its dangers and its incredible uses. Even though people today know a lot about the Amazon River, there is still so much more to learn and thousands of pages of information to record. The many Amazon adventurers who dare to journey into this place of fascination, curiosity and peril are still recording the endless surprises this Wowee Watery Wonder has to offer.

So, what is a successful business? A successful business is profitable over time, organised and intentional with its strategies and plans. These businesses control a large segment of the market share, have strong brand recognition and loyalty, and create reliable, consistent products or services. To run a successful business, it often takes perseverance, patience and enthusiasm for the product or service you want to provide. Developing a marketing strategy outline and business plan to keep track of your progress can also help a business set goals to provide an outline for success. It's important to stay motivated and constantly explore new ways of doing business, so you can stand out among your competitors and gain visibility in your market. The two businesses we have joined to explore are a local café plus an online marketplace platform Logan Deals! Through this we look forward to connecting with you in building successful local businesses! Read more about this project on: Qldguides. com.au and find the links to social media pages. Aries

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

Feb. 19 - Mar. 20

Mar 21 - Apr.19

Whether it's your diet or your exercise routine, it's important to create a relationship with yourself that is encouraging and brings some excitement about staying healthy. If you prefer to be with other people, sign up for an online nutritious cooking class or join a virtual chat about exercise.

You may be striving for more freedom in your life now, and the temptation to quit your job may be stronger than ever. But it's not quite time to pull the trigger on that. Messages from your dreams or psychic flashes may provide just the information you need to make significant changes for the better. Work improves and then money comes.

The Universe is likely to bring news about your finances and investment plans. Make sure to get important documents signed, sealed, and delivered as soon as possible so you can take advantage of the positive results. Regarding group activities, compromise between your needs and those of others.

Taurus

Cancer

Apr. 20 - May 20

May. 21 - Jun 20

Jun. 21 - Jul. 22

A pull between what you want to do to get ahead and what you must do to stay centered could frustrate you right now. There will many days like this in your lifetime, and the most important thing is to be aware of them when they occur and to gain perspective on the dilemma. The one thing that will never move down on the list of priorities is your health, so why not favor staying centered?

Dreams could shed light on some personal ambiguities you've been trying to understand, Cancer. Your thinking is especially clear and logical now, and work should therefore be a snap. Money matters should go fairly smoothly today, particularly if paperwork or legal documents are involved.

Whatever tasks or chores you may have to perform today are likely to go much more quickly and efficiently than usual. Success is strongly indicated in any kind of enterprise you take on today, so don't be afraid to try anything, no matter how outrageous it may seem. Don't be surprised if other people come to you for advice.

Leo Jul. 23 - Aug.22

Virgo

Libra

Aug 23 - Sept. 22

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22

Projects of all kinds that you could be working on with partners or friends could go especially smoothly today, Leo, as your thinking is especially sharp, clear, and logical. You and your friends are in an especially strong place right now, with trust and respect between you at an all-time high.

Today could be one of those days when you look around the house and think, "What a mess!" You might then decide to give the whole place a thorough cleaning. This is fine, Virgo, as long as you don't try to do it alone. Get others in the household to help out. You've been working very hard lately, and if you get too tired you could well be very short with everyone and be very poor company.

Letters or phone calls could come today reaffirming the continued success you've been enjoying and presenting new opportunities, Libra. Your mind should be in a very good space to consider anything new that comes your way. Therefore, whatever you have to think about, trust yourself!

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Capricorn

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

Today should prove a busy day on all levels. Inspiration for creative projects, particularly writing, should come to you in profusion, Sagittarius, and so you might produce results that could surprise even you. Communication with loved ones is particularly clear, open, and honest today. You will be able to clear up a few matters that may have been bothering you and those close to you.

You may find that the opportunities for making and saving money are doubled and even tripled over the next few weeks. While you're busy picking the ripe financial fruit all around you, don't neglect family, kids, romance, and creativity. Though you're getting together more, having fun, make sure you stick to your budget.

You may have been especially interested in promoting your general health for a while, Scorpio, and so today you could finally start that nutrition and exercise program you've been thinking about. You're likely to come up with a plan that is more than workable since your thinking is especially clear and logical right now. 46 | Logan Guide

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

SPANS GENERATIONS

T

he 2024 Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year prove age is no barrier to giving back to your community. Eighty-three year-old Margaret Harvey and 18-year-old Elahi Elahi were respectively awarded the 2024 Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards at today’s City of Logan Australia Day celebrations. Ms Harvey has spent more than 14 years providing support and friendship to residents experiencing homelessness, social isolation and loneliness through the Logan branch of charity organisation Rosies and their ‘Friends on the Street’ program. Ms Harvey has played a part in several outreach initiatives in Logan, including starting community feeds programs in Logan Central and Beenleigh and setting up an outreach van to provide hot and cold food items, blankets and hygiene packs. In addition, she also liaises with local businesses for donations of goods, services and funds to support the charity, and trains and rosters more than 60 volunteers.

Mayor Darren Power recognised Ms Harvey’s outstanding contributions at today’s Australia Day celebrations. “Margaret’s unconditional support and service to those who are experiencing incredibly difficult circumstances makes her a worthy recipient of our 2024 Australia Day Citizen of the Year award,” Cr Power said. “A longstanding community volunteer, Margaret has given back to countless residents across the city and shaped the Rosies Logan Branch into the community force it is today. “Margaret and Elahi have shown incredible service and commitment to their community and it is an honour to recognise their outstanding efforts at today’s ceremony.” A dedicated volunteer since the age of 11, Elahi Elahi was recognised for her extensive volunteer and advocacy work in the community. The Marsden resident juggled high school and two jobs while volunteering for Hummingbird House, Redkite, and Youth off the Streets. She was recently appointed as one of four youth leaders to represent Australia internationally at The Y’s Global Youth Advisory Council. She also represents Woodridge in the Queensland Youth Parliament and serves on the committees of both Youth UN and Make It 16. The City of Logan’s Australia Day event also welcomed and celebrated around 180 residents who became Australian citizens. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship ceremonies in Australia.

elebrate the Year of the Dragon and the Lunar New Year at Logan’s Chung Tian Temple. This exciting event will feature a wide array of activities spanning over two weeks, including a delightful food and fun fair, captivating cultural performances, mesmerising Lion Dances, and much more.

Recent Dragon years include: 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940, 1928, and 1916.

The Lunar New Year, unlike the Gregorian calendar used in most parts of the world, follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar, which causes it to fall on different dates in either January or February each year. This year, the Lunar New Year will be celebrated on February 10th. The festivities at Chung Tian Temple will commence on February 9th and continue through February 25th.

Mandarin: Xin Nian Kuai Le (sheen nian kwai luh)

YEAR OF THE DRAGON In 2024, we ring in the Year of the Dragon, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The zodiac sign of the Dragon represents power, success, honour, and luck among the Chinese. You can see why many Chinese parents want to have children in Dragon years!

EXERCISE MYTHS SEPARATING THE FACT FROM THE FICTION

A

t some time or another you will probably come across the following myths during your exercise journey. Here’s what you need to know to separate the fact from the fiction.

Fiction: If you stop working out, muscle will turn into fat. Fact: Muscle and fat are two distinct tissues that cannot be converted from one to the other. If you stop exercising, your muscle tissue will shrink, which means you may feel flabbier. Also, when muscles get smaller, they do not need as many calories to function, which means your metabolism slows down. So if you eat the same amount of calories, you may gain body fat.

Fiction: Certain exercises will rid us of trouble spots. Fact: Some people believe that if they exercise one particular area, it will cause fat to be removed from that area. In the gym, you often find men who store their fat in their abdomen are on the ab machines, and women with larger thighs are on the hip machines for hours in hopes of 'spot reducing.' However, while these abdominal and hip exercises can strengthen and tone the muscles of those regions, those muscles are actually located underneath the

'subcutaneous' (deep) layer of fat. This means we must lose the excess fat that is covering up the muscles in order to discard that 'flabby' appearance. When you exercise, the areas where you will lose weight are determined by your genes.

Fiction: Strength training will make women too muscular. Fact: Many women are afraid that strength training will make them bulky. However, women don't actually have enough testosterone to create big, bulky muscles. In fact, they naturally have less bone and muscle than men, which explains why females are at greater risk of developing osteoporosis than males. The fact is, women should undertake strength training because by keeping their bones and muscles strong, they decrease their risk of disability as they age.

Fiction: No pain, no gain. Fact: Many people still believe that you have to work at a very high intensity in order to get health benefits from exercise. In fact, moderate-intensity exercise reduces your risk of dying just as much as high-intensity exercise. Studies have found that women who regularly engaged in brisk walking reduced their risk of heart disease to the same degree as women who engaged in vigorous exercise.
