APPLY NOW FOR COMMUNITY

DEVELOPMENT GRANTS Grants expand bush-based learning

W

ith the help of Logan City Council, Loganholme resident Areta Farrance has expanded her outdoor teaching environment. Ms Farrance operates Bush Kindy Teaching, bringing immersive play-based activities to the city’s local bushland and green spaces. She has delivered bush kindy programs over the past 20 years including through the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group (KENG). After receiving Community Development funding from Council, Ms Farrance launched new programs last year to meet community demand. “In recent years there has been continuous requests from the community for more activities,” Ms Farrance said. “Thanks to the Council funding I started a new group at the Daisy Hill Conservation Park in partnership with local Indigenous artist Sally Terare and it operates each Tuesday during school terms.

“The Community Grants program allows you to be supported as you take the next step to pursue your passion.” Lifestyle Chair Councillor Tony Hall said Council was pleased to deliver a range of community grant programs. “Ms Farrance is a local community champion with a big heart and is doing some great work with local families,” Cr Hall said. “I encourage anyone with a big idea that will support the local community to consider applying for Community Development funding.” Up to $10,000 is available for not-for profit organisations, schools and social enterprises per application all year round. The next funding round closes on Tuesday, February 27. More details are available by emailing the Community Grants team via grants@logan.qld.gov. au or calling 3412 4033.

HAPPINESS

IS AN INSIDE JOB! By Seija Tupila, Holistic Counsellor Spiritual Mindset Coach

D

o you want to feel happy & energized from the moment you wake up till you fall asleep each night?

Sounds a bit fanciful right, like trying to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! I smile as I write this as I once tried chasing a rainbow through the back streets of Springwood that seemed to land right where I was headed only to be a mirage; but I did end up in ‘Light Street’ which seemed like a fitting synchronicity at that time, and I have dreamt

of standing right underneath a rainbow being showered in all its glorious colours with the pot of golden coins right there alongside me. Ok now that was just a side note now let’s get to the heart of this article. The truth is happiness is an inside job and studies proves that stress lowers the immune system and happiness increases it! So, saying stress less, think positively doesn’t help if you’re feeling stuck in overwhelm and you don’t know how to change it but what I can tell you is this, it is possible and it is our personal responsibility to shift from these lower vibrations into higher vibrational feel-good practices/habits to create our own inner peace and happiness! I want to share with you some very simple, fun, feel good ideas that I practice & incorporate into my daily schedule to help elevate your life making it lighter, brighter and happier from day 1- guaranteed! HOW TO RAISE YOUR VIBRATION? Before you reach for your phone in the morning (apart from the alarm) try letting your feet touch the ground, take some deep breaths in & out and notice how you feel in your body, breath into the parts that call for your attention, what is it trying to tell you (this is ‘conscious’ embodiment), greet your partner/pet, have a drink of water, warm drink.. *Your phone will still be

8 | Beenleigh Guide

there when you get to it however it’s imperative to give yourself this ‘you/self-reflective time’ before the day begins. Eat fresh, live & colourful foods. (Think in terms of the colours of the rainbow to get the optimum amount of nutrients, antioxidants to charge-up your immune system). Get amongst nature whenever possible, walk through the bush, let your bare feet connect mother earth as she can neutralize the ions and magnetic field in and around your body. (Cleanse and strengthen). Say no when you mean no (respect your boundaries, you are important).

Mention the code INTRO and receive one free meal to the value of $9.50. New customers only*

Say yes to invitations, new hobbies, projects (variety is the spice of life). Say sorry, only when you truly mean it. (people can sense insincerity). Dress in colours that make you feel good (introducing different colours elevates your mood). Bring live plants into your home (not only does it look lovely it oxygenates the air). Call someone you haven’t connected with in a while (let them know you care). Pat and play with your pet (they love spending quality time with you). Have alcohol free days more often (take a brisk walk under the starry night). Drink more water (hydrate to flush out toxins and support you energetically). Disconnect from your phone and social media and make your bedroom a phone scrolling free zone. (Consider that your bedroom is a sanctuary for rest, sleep, and rejuvenation only). I hope you can incorporate some of these practices into your daily life because I promise if you do, you will feel and radiate more happiness and discover the positive flow-on effect this has on not only you but all those around you! “Look after Yourself”

I

n January 2017, a then 9-year-old Samuel Glancy realised there was a need to help local School Children with School Supplies. He met 2 boys that had escaped from domestic violence, they had no beds, no food, no Christmas presents and it changed his world and opened his eyes. His very own School leftovers, made him think of these 2 boys and others in similar circumstances. In the first year he started collecting and helping 2 local Schools and gathered 4000 School Supplies. Since then, with the help of the local Community, he has helped over 13 Local and Regional Schools plus an overseas School, giving over 100,000 School Supplies.

10 | Beenleigh Guide

All of the Supplies are given to the Chaplains and Welfare Officers before School starts. Chaplains have shared there are approximately 50 children who don’t have supplies on their first day. The School Supplies have made a difference, with reports that children feel like they belong with having their own school supplies. Parents have called the Schools saying their children can’t attend as there are no supplies, the Chaplains have shared that they can now help. We have helped many single Parents, Parents with illnesses, even Cancer and families going through many hard times.

Samuel called his Fundraiser ‘Kids4Kids’ as he wanted Kids helping Kids. He wanted to bring smiles to those in need and wanted them to have equal opportunities to Education and learning. With a simple idea from a then 9 year old boy, we realised from day 1 that this wasn’t just a simple idea but an actual need. It highlighted how many children in our local community alone were in need. Increasing pressures on families and finances, we found each year the amount of Schools needing help and children needing supplies becoming bigger and bigger. We received requests from local, regional and international Schools.

VOLUNTEER We simply could not operate our Kids4Kids Events without the generous support of our volunteers who share their valuable time, expertise and resources. Our volunteers all give their times, skills and energy to help Students with their necessary resources for learning. The Kids4Kids Foundation Volunteers has many benefits: • •

The Kids4Kids idea that Sam had, we realised needed to change from a Fundraiser run by a child’s dream to help, to a reality that this needs future support and funding to continue helping those in need.

Today Kids4Kids is filled with hearts the same as Samuel’s. With more people to help and a bigger vision, support can be given to many more children in need.

Kids4Kids is constructed with a Board, Ambassadors, Volunteers all with a heart for disadvantage Kids.

• •

Giving and helping makes you feel happy! Help make an impact to Students in need with helping to provide the necessary School Supplies, tools and support to help provide them create a better future. Your time helps both our Foundation achieve our mission, vision and goals. Develop new skills such as leadership, teamwork and organisational skills. Your help can make a difference in your local community and those in need. And importantly, to be inspired and have fun!

The Kids4Kids Foundation welcomes passionate and committed people to help the development and success of giving Students a better future. Visit our website at www. kids4kidsfoundation.org.au to fill out the Volunteer application form or to donate.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME & FAMILY

FOR SUMMER’S STORM SEASON NOW The Time to Prepare for our Storm Season is Now!

With another La Nina Summer predicted in Australia, the time to prepare for our storm season is now. Whilst we can’t predict what Mother Nature throws at us, we can try to be as prepared as possible.

O

ur team at eresidential has compiled a list for you to review now and get your family and property storm season ready. Most items you can get checked off over the course of a weekend. Get to it! Clear your home’s gutters One of the most important steps to take in getting your home Summer Storm Ready is clearing your home’s gutters. When a storm hits you can see a large amount of water and sometimes debris hit your home in a short period of time, having your gutters clean and clear will allow the water to drain efficiently away from your property and into your stormwater drain. Inspect your roof While you’re cleaning the gutters, take a look at your roof. Are there any visible signs of damage that need repairing? Even small holes can quickly become big problems when a storm hits. So, repair any loose tiles, eaves, and screws now - or hire a local professional to get the job done. Trim the branches Trimming your close or overhanging tree branches can ensure you’re doing your best to avoid any potential breaks or damage to your property from falling tree branches in a storm.

14 | Beenleigh Guide

Clean up the garden Coming into storm season is a great time for a big garden clean up. Get those bushes trimmed, sweep up all the debris left over from winter, and take a pile of rubbish to the tip. Look around your yard as you do this: is there plenty of outdoor furniture, gardening equipment, or kids’ toys? See what you can move inside for the summer season, or have a plan to quickly secure or move these items when you know a storm is on the way. Prepare for power outages With storm season and the reliance on air conditioning over summer taxing our power grid, it’s predicted power outage events will increase across Australia. Create a place in your home that is equipped with a few items to see you through a power outage. Items like candles, matches, batteries, torches, and bottled water will come in handy when you have a few hours of no electricity. If your area is prone to power outages, you could invest in a standby generator to support your property through a power outage, a gas BBQ or camp cooker, and you could also look at buying a power surge protector to keep your appliances safe. Create a storm-ready go bag Do you have a “grab-and-go” bag packed? With our unpredictable Aussie summer, taking some time to create a bag with some essential everyday items if you need to leave your property in a rush will be worthwhile.

Know your local SES and Disaster Evacuation Center In Australia, there is a state emergency service (SES) to help you when you need it following an extreme weather event, a bushfire, or flood. In every state, you can call 132 500 (except the NT) and you will be connected to your state or territory’s SES. Put this number in your phone now. If your situation is life-threatening, call triple zero (000). In a natural emergency or weather disaster, do you know where to go if you can’t get home? Typically, there will be spots around town for you to grab some sandbags and help prevent any flooding to your home also. Know where they are and make a plan to access them in the event of a storm. Know your family’s weather and evacuation plan Do you know what you would do in the unlikely event you get cut off from your home or your family needs to evacuate? Talk about it with your family and create a plan. In an emergency, what is the plan, where will you go, what will you take? Consider all your family members and pets and know who is responsible for what. This can save valuable time in the moment if you ever have to make these decisions. Understand your insurance policy In the unfortunate event of an extreme weather event and damage to your property or belongings, you want to know what your insurance will cover. Before the weather strikes, take time to understand your policy by reading through it and talking with your insurance provider. Ask a lot of questions and see what else you can potentially be covered for. By eresidential Team. www.eresidential.com.au admin@eresidential.com.au (07) 3521 5478

Very professional and diligent Very happy and highly recommended. I found Welly, Robby and the eresidential team hard working, very diligent and make sure I have a great deal. Very happy with the price, process, and the result. 20 Kirkstall St, Holmview

GROWING YOUR BUSINESS

S

tarting a business can be an exciting endeavour that provides many opportunities to experiment and grow. With the right marketing strategies, online engagements and research, businesses of all kinds and sizes can succeed. Exploring various tips about strategies professionals use to set their businesses up for success can help you run a more lucrative company. In this article, we explain what it means to be a successful business in today's economy and provide helpful tips for business success. And further, to practice what we preach. We have recently added two separate projects to our stable, where we will together with the owners, create & execute marketing strategies. We will be sharing stories daily through social media to engage you and bring you along our journey of … probably some tears & hopefully more… laughters! Key takeaways we will be focusing on are: • Patience, enthusiasm and surrounding yourself with a good team. • Focusing on customers, including what they want, how they feel and where to find them • Remain flexible and willing to try new things to help meet set goals

So, what is a successful business? A successful business is profitable over time, organised and intentional with its strategies and plans. These businesses control a large segment of the market share, have strong brand recognition and loyalty, and create reliable, consistent products or services. To run a successful business, it often takes perseverance, patience and enthusiasm for the product or service you want to provide. Developing a marketing strategy outline and business plan to keep track of your progress can also help a business set goals to provide an outline for success. It's important to stay motivated and constantly explore new ways of doing business, so you can stand out among your competitors and gain visibility in your market. The two businesses we have joined to explore are a local café plus an online marketplace platform Logan Deals! Through this we look forward to connecting with you in building successful local businesses! Read more about this project on: Qldguides. com.au and find the links to social media pages. COUNCILLOR Deputy Mayor calls time on Council career

D

ivision 4 Councillor Laurie Koranski will not contest the upcoming election, ending an eight-year term in local government. Cr Koranski – currently the city’s Deputy Mayor and previously the City Lifestyle Committee Chairperson – made the announcement at today’s Ordinary Council meeting. She said her focus had always been on making positive change for the Division 4 community as well as the people of the City of Logan. Division 4 includes the suburbs of Bannockburn, Belivah, Buccan, Cedar Creek, Kairabah, Waterford, Windaroo, Wolffdene and Yarrabilba, as well as part of Bethania, Logan Village and Tamborine. “It’s been a tremendous privilege to work with the community to get some great outcomes across the division,” Cr Koranski said. “Watching Yarrabilba grow from the ground up and how it has developed its identity over the past 10 years has been rewarding, and I was

thrilled to see The Buzz community hub take shape and open this term. “I’ve also loved the evolution of Logan Village Green to ensure it remains a much-loved gathering place for our community.” Cr Koranski said she was looking forward to spending more time with her family, travelling and finishing a Masters in Business Psychology. Mayor Darren Power thanked Cr Koranski for her commitment to the City of Logan. “Cr Koranski has served her division – one of the largest in Logan – with dedication and passion since 2016,” Cr Power said. “She’s certainly knocked on my door many a time to fight for her constituents while I’ve been Mayor, but her service to the community was evident before she was elected to Council, and I thank her for being so involved in growing our city.” Prior to being elected to Council, Cr Koranski was recognised with the 2014 Mayor’s Spirit of Logan Award for her contributions to the community, which included serving on the Logan Country Chamber of Commerce board, Cancer Council Queensland Jimboomba Branch, Veto Energex Towers Organisation (VETO) and the Logan Country Safe City Group. She also helped coordinate the highly successful celebration of the Logan Village Settler’s Day 150 year anniversary in 2013.

he 2024 Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year prove age is no barrier to giving back to your community. Eighty-three year-old Margaret Harvey and 18-year-old Elahi Elahi were respectively awarded the 2024 Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards at today’s City of Logan Australia Day celebrations. Ms Harvey has spent more than 14 years providing support and friendship to residents experiencing homelessness, social isolation and loneliness through the Logan branch of charity organisation Rosies and their ‘Friends on the Street’ program. Ms Harvey has played a part in several outreach initiatives in Logan, including starting community feeds programs in Logan Central and Beenleigh and setting up an outreach van to provide hot and cold food items, blankets and hygiene packs. In addition, she also liaises with local businesses for donations of goods, services and funds to support the charity, and trains and rosters more than 60 volunteers.

Mayor Darren Power recognised Ms Harvey’s outstanding contributions at today’s Australia Day celebrations. “Margaret’s unconditional support and service to those who are experiencing incredibly difficult circumstances makes her a worthy recipient of our 2024 Australia Day Citizen of the Year award,” Cr Power said. “A longstanding community volunteer, Margaret has given back to countless residents across the city and shaped the Rosies Logan Branch into the community force it is today. “Margaret and Elahi have shown incredible service and commitment to their community and it is an honour to recognise their outstanding efforts at today’s ceremony.” A dedicated volunteer since the age of 11, Elahi Elahi was recognised for her extensive volunteer and advocacy work in the community. The Marsden resident juggled high school and two jobs while volunteering for Hummingbird House, Redkite, and Youth off the Streets. She was recently appointed as one of four youth leaders to represent Australia internationally at The Y’s Global Youth Advisory Council. She also represents Woodridge in the Queensland Youth Parliament and serves on the committees of both Youth UN and Make It 16. The City of Logan’s Australia Day event also welcomed and celebrated around 180 residents who became Australian citizens. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship ceremonies in Australia.
