SAFETY BOOST FOR EIGHT SITES

Community safety in the City of Logan has received a huge boost. New cameras will be installed across the city to provide an additional 40 vision streams into Logan City Council’s safety camera monitoring room.

The additional cameras, scheduled to be installed and activated in coming months, will extend Council’s camera safety network to nearly 1400 cameras, one of the largest networks operated by a local government in Australia.

The camera network is monitored 24/7 by Council and the Queensland Police Service.

The multi-directional vision streams not only assist in improving community safety across the city, but also help detect and reduce anti-social and unlawful behaviour, including illegal dumping.

The footage has become an invaluable tool that supports support police in identifying and prosecuting offenders.

The new cameras, which also have license plate recognition and night vision capabilities, will be installed at:

• Rowan Park (Slacks Creek)

• Cnr Arshad Dve and Wembley Rd (Berrinba)

• Cnr Browns Plains Rd and Wembley Rd (Browns Plains)

• Cnr Nyanza St and Compton Rd (Woodridge)

• Marsden Park (Marsden)

• Cnr Third Ave and Browns Plains Rd (Marsden)

• Cnr Estramina Rd and Vansittart Rd (Regents Park)

• Fleet Park (Browns Plains)

The new cameras are funded through an $800,000 grant from the Australian Government’s Investing in our Communities program.

Federal Treasurer and the Member for Rankin, Jim Chalmers said the delivery of the new cameras was evidence of the close cooperation between the local council and federal government.

“These new cameras are an important and practical demonstration of working together to deliver for our local community,” Treasurer Chalmers said.

“This is all about making our local area safer and more secure and making our community an even better place to call home.”

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said the expanding safety camera network would help residents feel safer in their local neighbourhoods.

“Council’s close working relationship with police in the camera monitoring room has proven to be very effective in detecting and arresting offenders,” Councillor Power said.

“These eight new hi-tech cameras will help to further crackdown on local crime and it sends a strong message to offenders that you will be caught if you choose to break the law in Logan.”

UNEMPLOYMENT HEADS IN RIGHT DIRECTION

Hard work produces promising local job numbers

The City of Logan has turned around one of the most enduring impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with the latest unemployment figures showing a promising boost for local residents.

Unemployment in Logan dropped significantly from 5.7 per cent to 4.9 per cent in the June to September 2023 quarter, bringing it much closer to the national average (3.6 per cent) and the state average (3.8 per cent) in the period.

Local unemployment was as high as 6.8 per cent in September 2022.

“COVID hit our local workforce hard because many of our residents are employed in jobs that require hands-on, face-to-face contact,” City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said.

“We have a robust, very willing workforce in Logan, but many of those who lost their jobs, or had their hours reduced, during the pandemic found it very challenging over the last two years to get back to pre-COVID levels.

“We certainly didn’t bounce back as fast as some of our neighbours in South East Queensland, but the latest figures are a very encouraging sign that more Logan residents are finding work and doing their bit to help boost our local economy.”

The latest unemployment numbers from Australian Bureau of Statistics show Logan stood out in a quarter which saw unemployment increase in six neighbouring Local Government Areas.

8 | Beenleigh Guide

Council-driven initiatives to support local job seekers include:

• The creation of the Mayor’s Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce, launched in November 2021.

• The annual free Logan Jobs Expo which last year attracted around 750 attendees and 60 exhibitors.

• Creation of the loganjobs.com.au website, which since July last year has assisted the recruitment needs of 43 new and 61 repeat local businesses.

• An ongoing trainee and apprentice program, which last year provided employment for 35 local young people.

• The Catapult Connects program and Bridge to Business expo which connects school students with prospective employer and local businesses.

• Targeted Launch into Health and Multicultural Employment expos.

The Mayor’s taskforce has been a strong driver in decreasing unemployment in the city, with a particular focus on finding long-term solutions for youth unemployment.

In the 2022-23 financial year, the taskforce directly assisted 192 Logan residents to find employment, with 105 of them being young job seekers.

And the strong support is continuing with 158 residents, 31 of them youth, gaining work thanks to the taskforce in the eight months since the start of the current financial year.

“We launched our taskforce with the aim of empowering local job seekers to unleash their potential and take control of their employment journey,” Cr Power said.

“These numbers, and the drop in local employment, are proof that we are heading in the right direction and the future is brighter for those in our community looking for work.”

15 YEAR OF SIMPLY BEANS

10 | Beenleigh Guide

Simply Beans has reached 15 years in business and is celebrating this milestone by reflecting on the development of Brisbane coffee scene.

The master roaster Joe, who first opened the roastery said reaching this milestone was a reflection of the team’s hard work.

“It’s funny because it feels like a long time and a short time,” Joe said.

It has been fantastic to see the coffee culture grow during this time and Joe’s enthusiasm for coffee roasting has certainly influenced the industry in greater Brisbane.

We met Deb and Joe, the owners of Simply Beans some 3.5 years ago when we started our journey of Logan City Guide. As proud locals, Deb and Joe had no hesitation in supporting the new business.

As one of those coffee aficionados who have thoroughly enjoyed every cup brewed and served professionally, making our day that much better, we threw few questions to Deb and Joe to share their coffee journey with you.

The journey to opening

Simply Beans was formed in April 2009 by Director Giuseppe, whom we know as Joe!

His passion for all things coffee stemmed from his Italian heritage and upbringing - often sneaking the end of his father’s espresso from early childhood. Joe loved exploring all the different and unique nuances that coffee had to offer in all areas of hospitality including being a Master Roaster.

Looking for passive way to be in the coffee industry he purchased a couple of vending machines. As he was looking for a supplier of beans – Deborah his wife asked “ Why ? You are the best roaster I know” so… Simply Beans was born. Joe as master roaster and entrepreneur, hit the road looking for someone to buy his beans.

Roasting from his home garage initially, he knew that Simply Beans needed to be in the City of Logan.

Q. Where was your first location? And when did you move into current Compton Road location?

2010 Joe established his wholesale coffee business in a 50sq meter premises in Underwood –Becoming the 1st Coffee Roastery in the City of Logan /Greater Brisbane area. With inquisitive passers-by attracted by the wonderful smell drifting from the roastery – Joe started serving espresso to the public 2 days a week “to share the coffee experience” This was the beginning point for the multifaceted business you know today.

In year 2013 relocated & stablished Simply Beans in our expansive Compton Road/Logan premises, giving us the ability to evolve and service our clientele Australia wide. Simply Beans is a now a one stop coffee house, with a buzzing Espresso Bar, Retail Shop, Wholesale department, Training & Workshops showroom.

THE POWER OF "YET"

Helping Children Develop a Growth Mindset

Yet. It’s a small word with immense power. "I can't read... yet." "I can't ride a bike without training wheels... yet." Helping children embrace this concept of "yet" is key to instilling a growth mindset, empowering them to see challenges as opportunities for growth. But what exactly does "growth mindset" mean, and why should parents care?

Well, let's break it down. Coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset revolves around the idea that intelligence and abilities aren't fixed traits but rather qualities that can be developed through effort and perseverance. In simpler terms, it's the belief that our kids aren't limited by their current skills—they can grow and improve with dedication and hard work.

Now, why is this mindset so crucial? For starters, it's all about resilience. When children embrace a growth mindset, they approach challenges with a "can-do" attitude. Take, for example, a student struggling with maths. Instead of giving up when faced with a difficult problem, a child with a growth mindset will persevere, trying different strategies and seeking help when needed. They see setbacks not as roadblocks but as opportunities to learn and grow. This resilience is a valuable life skill that will serve them well beyond the classroom, helping them navigate the ups and downs of life with confidence and grace.

But it's not just about bouncing back from failure; it's also about embracing the joy of learning. Kids with a growth mindset are curious and engaged, eager to explore new ideas and tackle unfamiliar subjects. They understand that intelligence isn't about being "smart" but about being willing to put in the effort to learn and improve.

So, how can parents foster a growth mindset in their children? It starts with the language we use. Instead of praising intelligence or talent, focus on effort and perseverance. Encourage your child's hard work and determination, celebrating their progress and resilience along the way. And when they face challenges, remind them that setbacks are just temporary obstacles on the path to success.

Tips on what to say, and what not to say, when praising your kids:

Say This: “I can see you worked so hard on this!”

Not That: “ You are so smart!”

Say this: “It seems like it’s time to try a new strategy.”

Not That: “It’s okay. Maybe you’re just not cut out for this!”

As parents, we also play a crucial role in modelling a growth mindset ourselves. Let your children see you embrace challenges and learn from your mistakes. Show them that it's okay to fail sometimes—as long as you're willing to pick yourself up and try again.

TIPS FOR A HAPPY MULTI-PET HOUSEHOLD

Introducing a new pet into your home or managing multiple pets can be a rewarding experience with the right approach. Here are some key tips to foster a happy and harmonious environment.

Gradual Introductions

Take your time when introducing new pets to each other. Allow them to become familiar with one another's scents and presence before facilitating direct interactions. Patience during this phase is crucial for building positive relationships.

Provide Personal Space

Ensure that each pet has its own designated area for eating, resting, and seeking privacy. Having individual spaces helps reduce conflicts over territory and resources, promoting a sense of security and comfort.

Equal Attention and Affection

Make an effort to give each pet individual attention and affection. Spending quality time with each furry friend strengthens your bond and minimises feelings of jealousy or competition.

Establish Routine

Establishing a consistent daily routine for feeding, playtime, and exercise creates a sense of stability and predictability for your pets. A structured environment can help alleviate stress and anxiety, contributing to overall harmony.

Monitor Interactions

Keep a close eye on your pets' interactions and be prepared to intervene if necessary. Watch for signs of tension or discomfort, and address any issues promptly to prevent conflicts from escalating.

T“oday we are in Springwood looking at what was once the IKEA Showroom on Springwood Road.

This 10,274 square metre complex was erected over what appears to have been a creek and a small housing subdivision between June 1986 and June 1987. The developer was Chase Corporation Ltd. who constructed this centre on the 3.215 hectare site for IKEA, who occupied 7,984 square metres of the building.

This IKEA store was the fifth one opened by the company in Australia. It was initially run by a franchisee but was later taken back by the company in 1989 due to disagreements over operations. By 1989, Chase Corporation Ltd. mortgaged the complex to Standard Chartered Finance Ltd. It was then sold to an Asian investor for $8.8 million in December of the same year.

In April 1999 IKEA announced it planned to spend $300 million to expand in three states, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The company had been struggled with finding land, though was eying off opportunities in Brisbane to build its fourth megastore. In December 2000 Homemaker Retail Group acquired the IKEA Homemaker Centre for $10.56 million. At the time Homemaker Retail Group were in discussions about extending the IKEA store,

which at the time was the only in Queensland. IKEA was at the time occupying 80% of the site and leased until 2005.

In September 2001 General Property Trust (GPT) made a $206 million takeover offer for Homemaker Retail Group. While I haven’t been able to find a confirmation on this, later evidence proves that this site would be owned by GPT.

In March 2003 IKEA Australia announced that they planned to invest $400 million on constructing supersized stores, one in Melbourne, two in Sydney and one in Brisbane.

Each were to replace existing smaller stores, with the first in Melbourne set to be the largest furniture showroom in the Southern Hemisphere. All of these megastores were expected to be open by late 2006.

In November 2004 General Property Trust announced that they had sold the IKEA Homemaker Centre in Springwood for $19 million to billionaire Mr. John Van Lieshout, then owner and founder of Super A-Mart.

In November 2004 IKEA announced plans to open a new megastores in Brisbane by October 2006.

Construction of the new $150 million IKEA store commenced in September 2005 at 3539-3565 Pacific Highway Slacks Creek to the designs of architect Krikis Tayler Retail. At the time of completion this was the largest IKEA store in the Southern Hemisphere, being four times the size of the previous store at 29,000 square meters.

On Tuesday October 24th 2006 at 7pm IKEA Springwood closed its doors after 19 years of trading. The new IKEA Logan opened its doors on Thursday October 26th 2006. Shortly after IKEA vacated the former Springwood site the building was converted into a Super A-Mart furniture showroom. The building was painted blue and featured cream accents around the entrances and windows.

LOCAL AUTHOR OF BIRTH, DEATH & MOMENT BETWEEN

Birth, Death and Moments Between is a collection of short stories about women: their struggle, strife, success and survival in an ever-changing world. The new release by local author, Nerin Naidu spans through multiple generations, continents and cultures, giving words to those without voices and voices to those without words.

Nerin’s debut collection of short stories are brutally honest, sometimes painfully so, scattered with moments of joy, love, regret, hate, desire - all the traits and emotions that make us human.

Nerin was born a middle child to a fourth generation South African-Indian family.

While in University, Nerin found her two true passions, anthropology, that of learning about different cultural groups and creative writing, putting pen to paper and letting her thoughts run free.

She graduated from the University of Durban Westville as a teacher. She went on to study further in South Africa obtaining her Bachelor of Education.

“For only through education can you succeed,” reiterated the words of her mother, a teacher herself.

Nerin secured a position as a high school teacher and travelling during the school holidays, unknowingly captivating to memory the lives of people she encountered. She came to a cross roads that would determine the future course her life.

Job opportunities opened up concurrently in both Canada and Australia. Australia beckoned to her louder and stronger with an urgent determined will that she call Australia home.

And so she did, immigrating to a sun kissed, searing hot rural town of Bundaberg in Queensland. She then moved to South Brisbane – Logan where she lived for the past 20 years.

Nerin continued to study while working as a teacher, completing her Master of Education from the University of Melbourne and another Master of Education in Guidance in Counselling from the University of Queensland.

She dedicated her entire existence to those she loved most, her family and the children she nurtured daily as a special education teacher in Brisbane and later head and leader of a large inclusive education unit at a private college, a department which she started from the ground up. She also volunteered as a grief and loss counsellor, offering a listening ear to those that needed it most.

Happiness seldom lasts as Nerin found, suffering a heart attack while assisting a student at work, followed by the tragic loss of her brother. She had a second heart attack as she navigated through the journey of a busy life.

Nerin believes that she is the person she is today because of the struggle of yesterday. She pens her deepest thoughts, experiences both personal and that of others that she encountered on her tediously long and yet in reality brusquely short journey through life.

Nerin is retired. She now volunteers, teaching and presenting workshops on creative and expressive writing using art and meditation. Nerin feels an exhilaration in sharing stories that need telling, stories of significant and defining moments for she is every woman: a mother, a friend, a daughter, a sister, a teacher, a cousin, an aunt, a wife chipped in places and sometimes frayed at the seams, but whole moving forward with a determined drive as life and love goes on.

Her debut collection of short stories, Birth, Death and Moments Between reflects life as it happens.

Please visit her website for details of workshops and availability of her book. www.nerinnaidu.com

Birth, Death and Moments Between by Nerin Naidu is also available on Amazon, Booktopia, Barnes and Noble and Ingram Sparks in Australia and Internationally.
