MY CAR

Ihave a 15-year-old Hyundai Elantra, that has just ticked over 200,000 km. It is a five-speed manual, which the police informed me was the best insurance policy one can have. Twice, thieves have been foiled in their attempt to steal it.

Once I lost my keys in the Springwood Mall car park. The keys were found the next day and handed in by an old man; he’d seen them thrown into some bushes. The would-be thief had located my car with the remote control but couldn’t drive it away because it wasn’t automatic.

And last November, my house was burgled while we were asleep upstairs (I’d accidentally left a sliding glass door open.) The thief stole my wallet and keys, but again, couldn’t drive the car away.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t looked pristine for 4 ½ months, because in October, when I was turning out of Logan Rd into Springwood Rd, in the

designated left turn lane, a man in the next lane decided he wanted to avoid all the roadworks further down and turned left too, right into my right-hand doors. He said I was speeding, but I must have been in his blind spot. Fortunately, a lady who was driving behind me, and into Springwood Rd, came back to be a witness, and 3 ½ months after the event, his insurance company admitted liability, and my car is being repaired without my having to pay the excess. I’ll even get a hire car for the week the repairer will have it, as the accident wasn’t my fault. I’m grateful it is still going strong, and I hope it lasts me for the rest of my driving days.

Singapore, ‘The Lion City’, an exciting destination with bold contrasts due to it’s marvellous and modern architecture and sights coupled alongside the old-world charm of the Singapore that once was.

Singapore is located on the Southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and although being second highest population density of any country in the world, it is surrounded by many green areas, gardens and many a rooftop oasis. A relatively easy flight from Brisbane, only 8 hours, direct non-stop with both our national carrier Qantas and their national carrier, Singapore Airlines.

Often thought of as just a ‘stop’ on the way to destinations further away, Singapore has so much more to offer than one can see in just 48 hours. A week in Singapore would barely have you touch the surface and immerse yourself into the culture and sights that make it so unique.

Whilst staying in Singapore it is very easy to discover the different areas of the city using the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit System), or if public transport is not for you, taxi’s are an easy, well priced and safe alternative.

A highlight to visit in city are the Gardens by the Bay. Home to more than 1 million plants from more than 5000 species from around the world. There is a 35 metre tall indoor waterfall and you can stroll above the jungle canopy via an aerial

walkway at Cloud Forest. The Flower Dome holds the Guiness World Record for the largest glass greenhouse showcasing exotic plants from 5 continents in 9 different gardens.

Right at the southern tip of the city is Sentosa Island. Only 15 minutes from the city centre, Sentosa Island is worlds apart from the mainland with tropical landscapes and golden beaches. Home to Universal Studios, the S.E.A Aquarium, Adventure Cove Waterpark and Scentopia (a perfume personality test and an opportunity to create your own signature scent) you can have a luxury beach getaway combined with the excitement of the theme parks.

Eating in Singapore is one of my personal highlights (we all know I love food!). You have everything from the traditional ‘Hawker Centre’s’

where many locals eat regularly to Michelinstarred restaurants, you will never be left wanting. Singapore is home to more dishes than you can eat in a lifetime.

Singapore is well known for the iconic Raffles Hotel, a 19th century all-suite hotel which has been open since 1887. Home to the Historic Long Bar where the Singapore Sling, widely regarded as the national drink, was first mixed in 1915. Today the rich, earthy decor of the two-storey bar is inspired by Malayan life in the 1920s. A definite must visit on any visit to Singapore.

When thinking of a ‘not so far’ different destination, please consider Singapore. You will not be left disappointed.

Before I sign off, please SAVE THE DATE for our upcoming TRAVEL SHOWCASE on Saturday, 20th April at the LECNA (Logan East Community Neighbourhood Centre) in Springwood. We have collated some of our best and most trusted travel operators to come together and share their products and experiences with both presentations and displays throughout the day. I hope you can join us.

Until next month,

HEALTH CARE NEAR HOME

Hospital to provide closer care for Springwood community

Private health care is now closer to home for residents of Springwood and surrounds.

The Brisbane South Private Hospital (BSPH) was officially opened today.

The hospital is on levels 5 and 6 within the City of Logan’s new Springwood Health Hub in Paxton Street.

It offers day surgery and services such as gynaecology, pain management, IVF and paediatric care.

The seven-storey Springwood Health Hub was completed late last year.

The building is home to range of community health care providers, including a general practice.

It includes hospital-grade lifts, a patient drop-off zone, an ambulance bay and free car parking.

The opening of the private hospital is part of more than $126 million in major health care investments delivered, or under construction, across the city since 2022.

Mayor Darren Power said it was important that new local health services are delivered to keep pace with demand across a fast-growing city.

“This new facility is a testament to Logan City Council’s ongoing advocacy, across all levels of government and the private sector, for high-quality health investment in our region,” Councillor Power said.

“The delivery of new private, and public health facilities in our city means more choice for local families and importantly, removes the need to travel long distances to Brisbane or the Gold Coast for medical care.

“The provision of easily accessible private health care plays an important role in taking pressure off our public health system which helps lead to better health outcomes for everyone.”

Other health services recently completed, or under construction, in Logan include:

Meadowbrook Medical Centre, in Logandowns Drive, Meadowbrook. The centre includes a GP and an immunisation clinic.

Meadowbrook Health Centre, under construction on Nestor Drive in Meadowbrook. This facility will include public and private health services, alongside a new Logan Urgent and Specialist Care Centre (LUSCC) – catering to minor injury and illness.

Yarrabilba Specialist Centre, on Adler Circuit, Yarrabilba, providing cardiology, oncology and radiology services.

A new OAPL (Orthopaedic Alliances Pty Ltd) facility in Slacks Creek.

Logan City Council’s Loganlea Road Healthy Street project is also supporting the rollout of new medical facilities in the city’s major Meadowbrook health precinct, which includes the expanding Logan Hospital.

Stage 1 of the project included a shared (bicycle and pedestrian) pathway on both sides of Loganlea Road, landscaping works, shade structures, street lighting, safety cameras and a signalised pedestrian crossing.

Stage 2 includes new recreational spaces, public seating and wide pathways to encourage active transport through the area.

The Healthy Street project received $2.4 million (across both stages) of funding from Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover program.

It was also funded through Council’s Meadowbrook Implementation Fund, and the Division 6 Local Infrastructure Program.

Passing Time With John

Do you often reminisce about the "good old days"—when a litre of petrol was merely 50 cents, a postage stamp cost ten cents, and a roll of newspaper was just 15 cents? Or recall our grandparents' tales—of their simple life on the farm and daily treks of over three kilometres to school? Well, when our team stumbled across John Prpic’s history page titled ‘Passing Time’, we were compelled to catch up with him to learn more about his project.

Meet John Prpić, a young, vibrant histographer with a passion for history, architecture, and community. Beyond his full-time job as a postie, he can be found cycling through town on his bike dubbed the 'time machine', taking photographs. He has amassed a collection of over 100,000+ photographs, each meticulously catalogued by postcode and sourced from diverse archives. His Facebook page, 'Passing Time', showcases these images in pairs—one from the past and its counterpart from the present, accompanied by an article.

“What started out as a hobby and an interest in researching the stories behind local heritage buildings, businesses, and homes, turned into something I share for others to enjoy as well,” says John. “I made my first Facebook post in 2017 and now have over 35k followers, with some posts even attracting over 100k views in just minutes!”

“People often think you have to be older to appreciate history, which surprises them when they find out I'm much younger. I'm happy to prove otherwise, seeing more and more young people engaging with my work.”

Despite the project's success, John emphasises, "It was never about the money. The time and effort towards compiling these articles are unpaid. My goal has always been to research and share these stories with the community.” With that said, if you would like to support John, he has a Patreon page where readers can subscribe, and he will pick up just a few dollars to help with photo storage.

Highlighting his local roots, John mentioned, 'My parents built our childhood home here in Rochedale south and so my siblings and I spent our early years of schooling at Springwood Road State School.”

“My dad was hard worker, often working 12 hour shifts at CSR in Coopers Plains making Gyprock, then coming home and working on the house. He hand built retaining walls..... concreted the front steps, the footpaths around the house, built the shed, an aviary for my older brother who was breeding finches and built the rear wrap around patio.

“We then moved to Brown Plains where my parents still resides today.”

John's dedication to connecting the past with the present has not only garnered a significant following but has also deeply resonated with many individuals. Through 'Passing Time', he has created a vibrant community of followers who eagerly anticipate each post.

Here are just a few examples of the appreciation and stories his followers have shared:

Glynis: It's amazing how you post items relevant to "on this day... x years ago". You must have a calendar system to alert you to upcoming anniversaries, and then you must work to a deadline to research the topic. Great work John.

Harris: Thank you John, for another everthoughtful essay. The combination of photo, facts, names and dates never fails to arrest me from my daily doings for a short time while I enjoy this almost magical journey you words give life to.

Peter: Very well done brilliant research and presentation I will really look forward to seeing more posts from you I love finding out history like that

Desley: Thank you, John, for this amazing history of my family’s childhood playground.

Lindsay: We as local kids rode our push bikes there and had a job of polishing the giant slide.

This involved spraying polishing on the slide then going down the slide over and over again on the Hessian bags. Great fun and free rides, I remember one time going off the end of the slide because it was so slippery, had a sore bum for a long time.

Paul: Thanks John for this in-depth research. I've always wondered what happened to this place including the final resting place of the 18 drop-centre trams. It's been a real mystery for the last 30 years or so.

John has previously been invited to share his stories on ABC Brisbane radio, various media outlets and most importantly this publication, as he is a true local making many of us reminisce the good memories of the past.

Each month, we'll feature a selection of his stories, but for a comprehensive collection of his captivating tales, visit his Facebook page @Passing.time.qld or scan the QR code below.

If you have any photos or stories of your own you’d like to share with John, please email them to Passing.time.qld@gmail.com.

THE POWER OF "YET"

Helping Children Develop a Growth Mindset

Yet. It’s a small word with immense power. "I can't read... yet." "I can't ride a bike without training wheels... yet." Helping children embrace this concept of "yet" is key to instilling a growth mindset, empowering them to see challenges as opportunities for growth. But what exactly does "growth mindset" mean, and why should parents care?

Well, let's break it down. Coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset revolves around the idea that intelligence and abilities aren't fixed traits but rather qualities that can be developed through effort and perseverance. In simpler terms, it's the belief that our kids aren't limited by their current skills—they can grow and improve with dedication and hard work.

Now, why is this mindset so crucial? For starters, it's all about resilience. When children embrace a growth mindset, they approach challenges with a "can-do" attitude. Take, for example, a student struggling with maths. Instead of giving up when faced with a difficult problem, a child with a growth mindset will persevere, trying different strategies and seeking help when needed. They see setbacks not as roadblocks but as opportunities to learn and grow. This resilience is a valuable life skill that will serve them well beyond the classroom, helping them navigate the ups and downs of life with confidence and grace.

But it's not just about bouncing back from failure; it's also about embracing the joy of learning. Kids with a growth mindset are curious and engaged, eager to explore new ideas and tackle unfamiliar subjects. They understand that intelligence isn't about being "smart" but about being willing to put in the effort to learn and improve.

So, how can parents foster a growth mindset in their children? It starts with the language we use. Instead of praising intelligence or talent, focus on effort and perseverance. Encourage your child's hard work and determination, celebrating their progress and resilience along the way. And when they face challenges, remind them that setbacks are just temporary obstacles on the path to success.

Tips on what to say, and what not to say, when praising your kids:

Say This: “I can see you worked so hard on this!”

Not That: “ You are so smart!”

Say this: “It seems like it’s time to try a new strategy.”

Not That: “It’s okay. Maybe you’re just not cut out for this!”

As parents, we also play a crucial role in modelling a growth mindset ourselves. Let your children see you embrace challenges and learn from your mistakes. Show them that it's okay to fail sometimes—as long as you're willing to pick yourself up and try again.

T“oday we are in Springwood looking at what was once the IKEA Showroom on Springwood Road.

This 10,274 square metre complex was erected over what appears to have been a creek and a small housing subdivision between June 1986 and June 1987. The developer was Chase Corporation Ltd. who constructed this centre on the 3.215 hectare site for IKEA, who occupied 7,984 square metres of the building.

This IKEA store was the fifth one opened by the company in Australia. It was initially run by a franchisee but was later taken back by the company in 1989 due to disagreements over operations. By 1989, Chase Corporation Ltd. mortgaged the complex to Standard Chartered Finance Ltd. It was then sold to an Asian investor for $8.8 million in December of the same year.

In April 1999 IKEA announced it planned to spend $300 million to expand in three states, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The company had been struggled with finding land, though was eying off opportunities in Brisbane to build its fourth megastore. In December 2000 Homemaker Retail Group acquired the IKEA Homemaker Centre for $10.56 million. At the time Homemaker Retail Group were in discussions about extending the IKEA store,

which at the time was the only in Queensland. IKEA was at the time occupying 80% of the site and leased until 2005.

In September 2001 General Property Trust (GPT) made a $206 million takeover offer for Homemaker Retail Group. While I haven’t been able to find a confirmation on this, later evidence proves that this site would be owned by GPT.

In March 2003 IKEA Australia announced that they planned to invest $400 million on constructing supersized stores, one in Melbourne, two in Sydney and one in Brisbane.

Each were to replace existing smaller stores, with the first in Melbourne set to be the largest furniture showroom in the Southern Hemisphere. All of these megastores were expected to be open by late 2006.

In November 2004 General Property Trust announced that they had sold the IKEA Homemaker Centre in Springwood for $19 million to billionaire Mr. John Van Lieshout, then owner and founder of Super A-Mart.

In November 2004 IKEA announced plans to open a new megastores in Brisbane by October 2006.

Construction of the new $150 million IKEA store commenced in September 2005 at 3539-3565 Pacific Highway Slacks Creek to the designs of architect Krikis Tayler Retail. At the time of completion this was the largest IKEA store in the Southern Hemisphere, being four times the size of the previous store at 29,000 square meters.

On Tuesday October 24th 2006 at 7pm IKEA Springwood closed its doors after 19 years of trading. The new IKEA Logan opened its doors on Thursday October 26th 2006. Shortly after IKEA vacated the former Springwood site the building was converted into a Super A-Mart furniture showroom. The building was painted blue and featured cream accents around the entrances and windows.

However, in 2006 owner of the business, Mr. John Van Lieshout, sold the firm for $500 million that same year. Between 2008 and 2009 the Logan City Council Library vacated the space in this complex that they had occupied for around 20 years and it was taken over by a Liquidation Centre.

Then between 2009 and 2013 the remainder of the tenants east of A-Mart Furniture were

UNEMPLOYMENT HEADS IN RIGHT DIRECTION

Hard work produces promising local job numbers

The City of Logan has turned around one of the most enduring impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with the latest unemployment figures showing a promising boost for local residents.

Unemployment in Logan dropped significantly from 5.7 per cent to 4.9 per cent in the June to September 2023 quarter, bringing it much closer to the national average (3.6 per cent) and the state average (3.8 per cent) in the period.

Local unemployment was as high as 6.8 per cent in September 2022.

“COVID hit our local workforce hard because many of our residents are employed in jobs that require hands-on, face-to-face contact,” City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said.

“We have a robust, very willing workforce in Logan, but many of those who lost their jobs, or had their hours reduced, during the pandemic found it very challenging over the last two years to get back to pre-COVID levels.

“We certainly didn’t bounce back as fast as some of our neighbours in South East Queensland, but the latest figures are a very encouraging sign that more Logan residents are finding work and doing their bit to help boost our local economy.”

The latest unemployment numbers from Australian Bureau of Statistics show Logan stood out in a quarter which saw unemployment increase in six neighbouring Local Government Areas.

Council-driven initiatives to support local job seekers include:

• The creation of the Mayor’s Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce, launched in November 2021.

• The annual free Logan Jobs Expo which last year attracted around 750 attendees and 60 exhibitors.

• Creation of the loganjobs.com.au website, which since July last year has assisted the recruitment needs of 43 new and 61 repeat local businesses.

• An ongoing trainee and apprentice program, which last year provided employment for 35 local young people.

• The Catapult Connects program and Bridge to Business expo which connects school students with prospective employer and local businesses.

• Targeted Launch into Health and Multicultural Employment expos.

The Mayor’s taskforce has been a strong driver in decreasing unemployment in the city, with a particular focus on finding long-term solutions for youth unemployment.

In the 2022-23 financial year, the taskforce directly assisted 192 Logan residents to find employment, with 105 of them being young job seekers.

And the strong support is continuing with 158 residents, 31 of them youth, gaining work thanks to the taskforce in the eight months since the start of the current financial year.

“We launched our taskforce with the aim of empowering local job seekers to unleash their potential and take control of their employment journey,” Cr Power said.

“These numbers, and the drop in local employment, are proof that we are heading in the right direction and the future is brighter for those in our community looking for work.”

CLEAN-UP EFFORTS COMMENDED

Governor thanks storm recovery superstars

The City of Logan’s super-sized storm response has been given a morale boost from the Governor of Queensland.

Her Excellency, the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, visited Logan City Council’s Marsden Depot to thank a contingent of almost 200 people who have supported the community since the Christmas Day storm ravaged Jimboomba, Cedar Grove and surrounding areas.

The hard-working heroes – including Council employees, contractors, staff from other support agencies and volunteers – have spent weeks cleaning up fallen trees from more than 500 streets, cooking meals, providing advice on relief payments and even doorknocking.

And the clean-up is still ongoing.

Addressing those gathered, the Governor praised the united spirit of support for the people of Logan and commended all involved in the clean-up effort.

“This is a brilliant example of community and Council working together, which I know is what underpins the Logan region’s enormous strength and resilience,” Her Excellency said.

Mayor Darren Power expressed his gratitude towards those who have given a helping hand

in recent weeks, particularly Council staff who cut short their Christmas holidays to co-ordinate the disaster management response and recovery.

“We know this clean-up isn’t anywhere near completed and we’ve had arduous conditions the whole way through,” Cr Power said.

“On top of the physical clean-up of tonnes of trees and other vegetation, the loss of power, the stifling humidity and financial stress has meant some tough days for many people.

“But our city has always been resilient and I’ve seen people power shine through on even the darkest days.”

HARMONY WEEK 2024

Community invited to embrace Harmony Week at Logan Libraries

ADaisy Hill resident will shine a light on her culture this month as the City of Logan celebrates Harmony Week 2024 (March 18-24).

Madhu Khanna will run a workshop on how to create a traditional Hindu lamp, known as a diya, at Logan West Library in Browns Plains on Saturday, March 23 from 10.30am to 11.30am.

The Indian-born special education teacher and artist will help participants create a diya from clay or mud and show how it can be decorated after it has dried.

The lamps lit by Hindus have a cotton wick and are filled with mustard oil during the annual Diwali festival of lights (November 1 this year) and clarified butter (pure ghee) during every day prayer at home and in temples.

Hindus believe a diya dispels darkness.

“It brings light into our life and encourages us to live peacefully,” Mrs Khanna said.

A number of events for adults and children that celebrate the City of Logan’s culturally rich community are planned by Logan Libraries during Harmony Week.

The theme for Harmony Week 2024 is Everyone Belongs.

The Logan District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders will present a ‘Yarning with our mob’ story telling session on Saturday, March 23 at Logan Central Library.

Aunty Heather Castledine will discuss reconciliation in the community from 10.30am to noon. Participants can make a friendship bracelet to celebrate the week.

Harmony Week Play and learn sessions and themed Harmony Week story time sessions hosted by First 5 Forever are also planned at multiple libraries.

These fun interactive sessions teach parents how to boost the brain and language development of children aged two and over.

Kids’ Club participants will be able to decorate photo frames during Harmony Week to display drawings or photos.

Bookings are required for each events and can be made via lccqld.com/HarmonyWeek

TIPS FOR A HAPPY MULTI-PET HOUSEHOLD

Introducing a new pet into your home or managing multiple pets can be a rewarding experience with the right approach. Here are some key tips to foster a happy and harmonious environment.

Gradual Introductions

Take your time when introducing new pets to each other. Allow them to become familiar with one another's scents and presence before facilitating direct interactions. Patience during this phase is crucial for building positive relationships.

Provide Personal Space

Ensure that each pet has its own designated area for eating, resting, and seeking privacy. Having individual spaces helps reduce conflicts over territory and resources, promoting a sense of security and comfort.

Equal Attention and Affection

Make an effort to give each pet individual attention and affection. Spending quality time with each furry friend strengthens your bond and minimises feelings of jealousy or competition.

Establish Routine

Establishing a consistent daily routine for feeding, playtime, and exercise creates a sense of stability and predictability for your pets. A structured environment can help alleviate stress and anxiety, contributing to overall harmony.

Monitor Interactions

Keep a close eye on your pets' interactions and be prepared to intervene if necessary. Watch for signs of tension or discomfort, and address any issues promptly to prevent conflicts from escalating.

WHAT ARE FLAT PACK HOMES & SHOULD YOU INVEST IN ONE?

In recent years, the housing market has witnessed a surge in innovative solutions to meet the ever-evolving needs of homeowners. Among these, flat pack homes have emerged as a compelling alternative, offering a blend of affordability, sustainability, and customisation. But what exactly are flat pack homes, and should you consider investing in one? Let's delve deeper into this contemporary housing trend.

Flat pack homes, also known as prefabricated or modular homes, are structures that are manufactured off-site in a factory-controlled environment before being transported to the desired location for assembly. Unlike traditional construction methods, which involve building from scratch on-site, flat pack homes are constructed using pre-made components that are designed to fit together seamlessly, much like a puzzle.

WHAT MAKES A FLAT PACK HOME A GOOD INVESTMENT?

Eco-friendly

All flat pack homes are built with a focus on reducing carbon emissions - but the exact ways they do this differs with each manufacturer.

Energy efficient

Equipped with energy saving features, flat pack

homes will help cut down your utility bills in the long run – a definite selling point!

Flat pack homes in Australia have low energy requirements and high energy standards. Some even cut down on energy usage by 70% when compared with traditional housing.

Affordable

The cheaper the investment, the greater the profit. It’s estimated that kit homes cost 10 to 25% less than traditional homes, even after paying for permits and land.

Quick construction

Faster construction times mean less labour and material costs as well as factory usage. While a normal home may take over a year to build, flat pack homes will only take a few months.

High quality

The controlled environment of a factory enables flat packs to be built to a higher standard. They are more durable than traditional homes and are of a higher quality.

All in all, flat packs are great housing options for home buyers, but can also guarantee a tidy profit for investors who play their cards right.

LOCAL AUTHOR OF BIRTH, DEATH & MOMENT BETWEEN

Birth, Death and Moments Between is a collection of short stories about women: their struggle, strife, success and survival in an ever-changing world. The new release by local author, Nerin Naidu spans through multiple generations, continents and cultures, giving words to those without voices and voices to those without words.

Nerin’s debut collection of short stories are brutally honest, sometimes painfully so, scattered with moments of joy, love, regret, hate, desire - all the traits and emotions that make us human.

Nerin was born a middle child to a fourth generation South African-Indian family.

While in University, Nerin found her two true passions, anthropology, that of learning about different cultural groups and creative writing, putting pen to paper and letting her thoughts run free.

She graduated from the University of Durban Westville as a teacher. She went on to study further in South Africa obtaining her Bachelor of Education.

“For only through education can you succeed,” reiterated the words of her mother, a teacher herself.

Nerin secured a position as a high school teacher and travelling during the school holidays, unknowingly captivating to memory the lives of people she encountered. She came to a cross roads that would determine the future course her life.

Job opportunities opened up concurrently in both Canada and Australia. Australia beckoned to her louder and stronger with an urgent determined will that she call Australia home.

And so she did, immigrating to a sun kissed, searing hot rural town of Bundaberg in Queensland. She then moved to South Brisbane – Logan where she lived for the past 20 years.

Nerin continued to study while working as a teacher, completing her Master of Education from the University of Melbourne and another Master of Education in Guidance in Counselling from the University of Queensland.

She dedicated her entire existence to those she loved most, her family and the children she nurtured daily as a special education teacher in Brisbane and later head and leader of a large inclusive education unit at a private college, a department which she started from the ground up. She also volunteered as a grief and loss counsellor, offering a listening ear to those that needed it most.

Happiness seldom lasts as Nerin found, suffering a heart attack while assisting a student at work, followed by the tragic loss of her brother. She had a second heart attack as she navigated through the journey of a busy life.

Nerin believes that she is the person she is today because of the struggle of yesterday. She pens her deepest thoughts, experiences both personal and that of others that she encountered on her tediously long and yet in reality brusquely short journey through life.

Nerin is retired. She now volunteers, teaching and presenting workshops on creative and expressive writing using art and meditation. Nerin feels an exhilaration in sharing stories that need telling, stories of significant and defining moments for she is every woman: a mother, a friend, a daughter, a sister, a teacher, a cousin, an aunt, a wife chipped in places and sometimes frayed at the seams, but whole moving forward with a determined drive as life and love goes on.

Her debut collection of short stories, Birth, Death and Moments Between reflects life as it happens.

Please visit her website for details of workshops and availability of her book. www.nerinnaidu.com

Birth, Death and Moments Between by Nerin Naidu is also available on Amazon, Booktopia, Barnes and Noble and Ingram Sparks in Australia and Internationally.

WALL PILATES

THE NEW LOW-IMPACT EXERCISE EVERYONE'S TRYING

So what exactly is wall Pilates? It’s that question that most of us are thinking about. It’s precisely as straightforward as it sounds. Pilates but with a wall. This latest fitness trend strips back on equipment, requiring only what everyone has in their home—a wall. By blending traditional Pilates principles, it offers a dynamic full-body workout. So, there’s no need to visit your local studio for those body-weight exercises; all you need is a wall to get started.

What are the Benefits of Wall Pilates

Wall Pilates comes with numerous perks. Primarily, it's economical since it requires minimal equipment and is essentially free, making it a versatile workout option for any time and place. Additionally, the intensity and complexity of the exercises can be customised to fit your core strength and fitness level, making Wall Pilates an inclusive option for beginners and advanced enthusiasts alike.

As with any form of exercise, it takes time and consistency to see results. Wall Pilates will help you to build a stronger core, develop posture and improve fitness levels when practised

consistently. Many people add a session into their workout routines to mix things up and keep exercise fun and enjoyable.

Exercises for Beginners

Wall Squat with Cactus Arms: This exercise not only strengthens the quads and glutes but also opens up the chest. Begin with your back against the wall, lower into a squat, and raise your arms to form a cactus shape. Hold this position for a few breaths before returning to the starting stance.

Wall Bridge: Targeting the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back, lie on the floor with your feet against the wall and lift your hips to create a bridge. This move is perfect for enhancing lower body strength.

Wall Plank: A core-engaging exercise, start by facing the wall. Place your hands on the wall and step back into a plank position. Hold this, making sure your core is activated throughout.

IKIGAI

THE SECRET TO A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE?

We’ve all got something that drives us to get up in the morning. That special something – a cause, a person, a purpose – that helps us enjoy life. What’s yours?

Let’s be honest, we all feel lost sometimes. We may ask ourselves: ‘What am I doing with my life?’ or ‘Aren’t I supposed to have a five-year plan by now?’

As teenagers, we think we’ll have everything figured out by our 20s. In our 20s, we think we’ll have made it by 30. By our 30s? It dawns on us that somewhere along the line, we’ve become a fully-fledged adult, and we still don’t have all the answers.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re treading water and aren’t sure what the big picture is for you, it may be because you haven’t discovered your ikigai yet.

WHAT IS IKIGAI?

Ikigai, pronounced "ee-kee-guy," is a Japanese concept that roughly translates to "a reason for being" or "a reason to wake up in the morning." The Japanese island of Okinawa, where ikigai has its origins, is said to be home to the world’s longest-living people. They live on average 10 years longer than people in the Western world - 10 more years of a full and healthy life. Could the concept of ikigai contribute to longevity?

While the concept has a long history in Japan and other parts of Asia, the term recently resurged in popularity throughout the western world with the publication of Héctor García and Francesc Miralles’ 2016 book, Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life.

HOW CAN I FIND MY IKIGAI?

Start out by asking yourself a couple of questions. Be sure to take notes so you can revise them later and reflect on your collection of ideas.

What you love doing (your passion)

What the world needs (your mission)

What you are good at (your vocation)

What you can get paid for (your profession) Importantly, while some people's ikigai is an occupation that touches on all of the above (for example: teachers, fishermen, bankers, potters, chefs, train drivers), your ikigai does not have to be your work. In fact, a 2010 survey of 2,000 Japanese people revealed that only 31% of

them classified their work as their ikigai. Raising a family, boxing, running, stamp collecting, writing a novel, painting, or pursuing a project you've always wanted to do – all these can be ikigai.

Above all, finding your ikigai requires patient self-searching and asking yourself the fundamental questions: Who am I? Why I am doing something? What do I truly care about? What do I want in life?

EXAMPLE OF LIVING ACCORDING TO IKIGAI

The famous Japanese sushi chef Jiro Ono provides an apt illustration of ikigai, conceived as devotion to a pursuit that brings a sense of fulfillment or accomplishment.

Chef Ono has devoted his life to innovating and perfecting sushi-making techniques. He runs a small, exclusive 10-seat sushi restaurant in Tokyo, Japan.

Chef Ono has achieved the highest Michelin restaurant guide rating of three stars and is widely considered the most accomplished sushi chef globally. In Jiro Dreams of Sushi (Gelb, Iwashina, Pellegrini, & Ono, 2012), the award-winning documentary about his life and work, Chef Ono states:

“You have to fall in love with your work… dedicate your life to mastering your skill… I’ll keep trying to reach the top, but no one knows where the top is.” (Age of Ideas, 2020)

This is a good illustration of ikigai as a devotion to what one loves, an effort toward mastery and accomplishment, and a never-ending journey that also brings a sense of fulfillment.

Interestingly, Chef Ono does not only manage the preparation of sushi in his restaurant. Due to its small size and open layout, he can observe up close his customers’ tasting and reactions to a meal and is known to modify the sushi based on such reactions.

Central to Chef Ono’s ikigai, one might say, would be pursuing excellence in sushi preparation and sharing this excellence with those who love sushi and fine dining.
