Q ueen's College has yet again ridden off with flying t olours ! Never before in its history_have four namei: been in:,cribed in one year on the Guyana Scholars' Plaque at the right o f the hall here at Queen's. N ever also havt Advanced Level distiPct;ons reached the lofty pea k of thirty-five. This skyrocketing number has erased even last year's rf'cord , now fallen from grace, of twenty-eight.

Return of 'Golde11 Days'?

- ' WITH the advent o f our l 2Sth year ('69-70) it seems to me th at Queen's has finally decided to get up off its fat, complacent sit-uj.,on and try to shine up its dt'nnitely tarnished image, grown dull since c ur fathers, brothers and Masters were at school.

Why tarnished ? A suggestion from one authoritative source is that Queen's lacks leadership.

P erhaps this remarkable change could be linked with political events; the two most significant ones are Guyana 's gaining of Independence a nd our imminent R epublican sta tus; one facet of each event is the obvious need- to rea r our own future icader~ in Guyana an<l the leaders of tomorrow are probab ly now sitting in the hallowed ha lls 'lf Queen's College; it is also probably that our futu re lead ers wi ll not be the trad itional schola rs of yesteryear, who, in a few years will find no place in our country' s leader~hip, which may be wrested from them by the trained politicians ancl university-taught intellectuals. T herefo re our boys must be trained prac.tically and multilaterally ; this is the e'<pressed opinion of those who a re in charge a t our school\ admin istration.

J Any change must stem from our ad ministrators; the in fusion I o f this new spirit may he owing to the fact that we have a new t H eadmaster who seems to have a talent for iunovations, which are at least bold. if not startling.

O ne of the most obvious manifestations of the allempt to project a new image is the idea of self-help. I expressly use the ' word " idea". bc:causc for the greater part of the school, it still is an idea. For some it is a pleasant reality, · others an unpleasa nt one; fo r still others, it is something quite remote and beyond the slightest contempla tion.

O ur fi rst ventute into the field was the erection of "The F ence.'' Though successful in the obvious sense, on refll'ction. one can sec that the project failed in its ulterior task- to br;ng all the beys Kl the school together in a common cause, and to cnabll" Q .C . to say afterward s tha t it h ad achieved a goal, in fa ct, a tiny group o f some one or two dozen boys actively d id most o f the work.

T he u1me might be said of the excavation ,on the Camp R oad dritve. This was different, though, in that the work was entirely voluntary ; but the response wa, entirely predictabb: b esides Prefects, there were never more than a dozen boys who a rrived for the express purpose of d igging; most people were dragged in because they happened to be a round. The thing tha t was annoy~ ing, w as the calloU5ncss of those who sai.Jed by the labourers, probably fecEng that work was too " low" for them. Some laughed - and ba rely escaped instant death by ;,icka.xe.

Th~ response to the call to pa 'nt the school was much better; I st, 2 nd. 3rd fo rms and a few societies p lunged into the job with more gusto tha n skill , yet managed to do some fairly presentable jobs. The members o f the U pper School a ll appear to be terribly busy ; or perhaps ouly a few o f them know what a pamtb rmh is.

I think tha t th is pro jection of a new image has a very importa nt corollary : na mely, that insofa r as the school as a whole ts improving an individual will improve and Q ueen\ will be once more b ui\d=ng boys with strength of r.liaracter, honesty and all the other qualities associa ted with · the oft-q uoted "Golden D ays o f Q .C." M.

Queen's C.Ollage c r i- c k e t has dropped considerably over lhe Past five years. Let me however, add that this present ebb has no connection whatsoever with the departures and admissions of recent years. We are still .fortunate in getting players of more than average ability. Our main problem is discipline, and general attitude towards the playing of games. It therefore means that if our performances at games are to improve. we have got to begin now, to change our entire approach to extra-curricular aclivily.

The Cricket Club will now function as a well-organised club should. Cricket will underJ?o m'lny ch11n11:es especially in the area hbelled "Supervision·•. T:1e G'lmes Master, the C.o,ch and Tate prepared to play our I}'lrt in the reshaping of this club but subseQuent s11ccci.s will only IJe achieved if our memhl-•1·:-:1 pull their weight.

We propose running the club on the basis of having four sections, namely: Seniors- ( lwo groups comprising Northcote and Wight Cup players). Colts -0ur Under Sixteen Players and JuniorS--Our Under Fourteen Players. This does not mean that a player under 16 years will not be eligible for selection for either of the 2 top XI's. Ability will not go unwatched, nor will approach towards the game. In order to have things well streamlined, week-end matches will be ar~anged for at least one group 1f not for more. Matches will vary from friendly fixtures against outside scho0l<: to practice !matches among ou rselves. We'll _try to field a team in every competition

open to secondary schools.

Re-organisation er House Cricket will t,e discusse:l at the conclusion of this year's competition . It is proposed to run 3 competitions next year:-a senior, junior, and senior K.O. competitions. All this calls for interest and sacrifice. Success may not be achieved overnight, but we are aiming at sustained, and not spasmodic success.

Mr. Woolford continues to coach the senior group~, and the other two groups are to be coached by Mr. London and myself. This does not mean that phyers will only be exposed to the co.1.ching of their resp-eclive group. It is expected that the senior players will help out with the junior ones. From time lo time well-known cricketing personalities wilJ be invited to give pep talks to the players, since one can never know too much about the finer points of the game. Cricket like any other game is played both on and off the field and as such our players must learn to t a k e net practice seriouslv.

This includes paying careful attention to the bowling. batting, and fielding of teamm~tes, so that any necessary advice may be given. as to which are11s of play need strengthening, etc. The coach is the man in charge, but even he cannot see everything.

Any team effort must be a join t effort and our present teams b~dly need this type of approach. As long as each player looks out for other players, the discipline of the teams wilt improve, both on and off the field of play. Then and only then shall we develop a will to win, and that ~chiev~rl. half the battle shall have been won.

The Supervisors of the different games being played on our playing fields, have all expressed their willingness to co-operate, so that bugbears of the past like improper condition of the playing areas will remain where they belong- in the past. The ground staff, which is at present very inadequate wilt continue to shoulder such re;;poJ1si bilities as are theirs, and positive attempts will be made towards having this J?"M1tnrl staffing problem solved.

In the final analysis I have tried to present our Northcote figures for the recently concluded season. At the time of writing, the House Cricket Competition is in its final round. These figures indicate roughly bow much more effort we need to Jmt into imprn.,; nO' our 1.-ritket h~re at Queen's.
