The New Auditorium - Alter so Many Years By: Ravi11a Etwaroo a11d Do11ette Cappel/

One black night in November 1997, smoke filled the air as if a volcano had just erupted, but in fact it was Queen's College aflame. On that dark night in 1997 the Queen ·s college family was forced to their knees when then auditorium, staff room, dining hall and parts of the eastern and western wings were gutted in flames. Nevertheless we persevered and with strength and courage today we prosper in our new auditorium. Prior to construction students and staff were presented with a draft plan of the building. which was dc:-.igncd to house student and staff facilities such as an auditorium, kitchen and dining hall. lounge, staff room and offices for the !lead a nd Deputy Headmistresses and administrative staff, washrooms and storage rooms. The building was completed and ready for use by Scpte1nber, 2003 and was blessed on

October. 2003 at an oflicial Opening Ceremony, which was attended by the Honourable President Bharrat Jagdco. The Administrative Block comprises a large staffroom, spacious lounge, offices for the Head and Deput y Headmistres s and administrative staff, staff lavatory facilities, storage areas and sick bay. This block has easy access to the East and West wings and the lounge is linked to the first fonn corridor and the staffroom is linked to the third form corridor by walkways. The Administrati,c Block overlooks the auditorium. At present. this servers as an assembly hall and houses three badminton courts for students recreation. This hall is not as spacious as the students expected and can just scat the entire school population. In addition, there is no back -stage area to compliment the large stage. There is no

for life. She is a generous and selness woman who has served this institute for so many yea rs. Ms. Rawlins is the only person in this institute who can tell us of Queen's College in I 960·s and I970's. She is on the Wall of Fame. with the likes of Mr. Frank Maloney, Ms. Zahora Mohammed and Mrs. Claire Blake. Ms. Rawlins showed a lot of interest in her students and was a constant source of inspiration for us to excel. I could remember her giving tests where hardly anyone got above 50%, but we went on to rake in the excellent scores at CSEC. She sacrificed a lot for her students, her sleep, marking papers and her beloved cricket and tennis. She is a West Indian fan all the way. She walks everyday to and from Queen ·s College and taught her students. even a ftcr she retired. with grace anc charisma. Ms. Rawlins is one of the greatest teachers to have ever walked the halls of Queen's College.

Queen's College has gone through so many changes in the years. Teacher's have left and have come from all parts of Guyana but only one thing remained the same. the exciting intriguing and exhilarating French classes of Ms. Esther Rawlins. Ms. Esther Rawlins is presently the longest serving teacher in Queen's College and I have had the privilege of being taught by her for five wonderful years. She has even taught my two brothers and cousins who attended the institute in the late I 980's and J990's. Ms. Rawlins was the driving force for many students to do well. She gave us a lot of jokes and advice and made our classes very interesting. She stressed on the importance of vocabulary which lead to so many passes in French. As I reminisce now. about those days that she had m, doing orals during the lunch period that I realize it was forour benefit. She gave us a lot of knowledge, not only in French by advice •;: .:· .;

dining hall in the present building. A very small room out:-.idc the auditorium sen cs as the canteen. Lunch times arc strcssfi.il as service is , ·cry slow. Below the stafT room and lounge one will find the most social site in Queen·s College. It is the gathering place for the school where both leisurely and business activities arc conducted by the student:-.. The Queen ·s College family is indeed grateful for the new auditorium. Even though there may be deficiencies with the auditorium it still plays a major role in Queen ·s College. It not only hosts meetings and assemblies but showcases the artistic qualitie s and sportsmanship ofQ.C. students. The rebuilding of the Queen's College auditorium, shows progress and development of the school and we arc very fortunate to have this aud itorium as many others have never seen ofone such.
