EDITOR’S NOTE

LETTERS TO TH E EDITOR

For fifty four years the Queen's College Lictor has been a chief part of the many traditions cultivated at our elite high school. It has been responsible for the preservation of the excellence encompassed within the school itself through its news stories and the publication of its students’work.

Despite the defeat endured during the last several years in publishing a Lictor consistently, the 2004 Lictor Committee forged ahead with one goal in mind—the successful completion and publication of a 2004 Edition of the Queen's College Lictor.

A handful of the graduating class of 2004 was recruited for the job and with the aid of a few Lower Sixth formers, the team worked around the clock to collect the material catalogued within this newspaper, for not onl y the current student body, but for future student bodies as well.

After many sleepless nights and intense sessions, the Lictor Committee was finally able to produce a newspaper worthy of Queen’s Coliege. I therefore compliment all the people who played an active role in making the 2004 Edition of the Lictor possible. This exhibited immense school spirit on their part.

Ideally, it had been envisioned that our particular committee would take Queen’s College back to the days when it was published twice a year, however this idea was quickly abandoned as we became overwhelmed with fundraising activities (for our graduation) as well as our obligation to our studies. However, it is my belief that with the appropriate funding and a dedicated staff comprised not only of Upper Sixth Formers but Lower Sixth Formers as weli, that perhaps this tradition may be revived.

Before concluding,! must apologise for the lack of certain content which traditionally appears in the Lictor. I must also apologise for the lack of two very important articles: the Re-opening Ceremony of the Auditorium as welt as our former Head Mistress's Valedictory Ceremony.

The transcription of these two articles was assigned to someone who failed to fulfil this duty and for that I am truly sorry. We however hail Miss Wendel Roberts for her years of dedicated service to Queen’s College and hope that she can forgive us for this terrible offence.

As I pass on the reigns of this illustrious tradition to my successor(s), I strongly urge you bear the torch proudly and continue to let the banner of Queen’s College fly high. Please remember that if you do not publish a Magazine and/or Lictor, it will reflect poorly not only on you, but on the institution as a whole (since this takes away from the records and nostalgic memories fashioned at our beloved school). Make us proud Queen's College!

Improved Queen’s College Dear Editor, I am a new student at Q.C. with several complaints. When I first started out at your school, I could not believe that this was the Queen's College I had heard so much about. After all, the canteen could be described as nothing short of insanitary with dogs sleeping on the very chai rs and tables that the students were expected to eat at. The rubbish bins, flies and even rodents were a little too close for comfort and even the workars serving the food had skin conditions, etc.

However, t must compliment the Q.C. Board for providing us with a new canteen unfortunately, with the short iunch period on Wednesdays, by the time we are released from classes there is insufficient time to buy food and eat it before the bell rings.

The next problem I wish to address is the lack of internet research facilities at Q.C. When I transferred from Saint Stanislaus College, we had an internet facility available to us in our Computer Science Laboratory. If Q.C. is truly the premier Secondary School in the country, how has it managed to fall so far behind in a world that thrives on the Information Age? Another difficulty I ran into at your school was the lack of adequate furniture and space in the school’s library. Queen’s College has just over seven hundred students therefore why is it that lessthan 1/791of that amount is catered for in the school’s library? Students often seek out the li brary for refug e because of another lack of sufficient furniture and rooms for students who do not have classes or wish to study quietly. The library encourages students to study, do research and even excel academically therefore I think that when the school’s next stage is ready to begin, the designers should take into consideration the school library and design a much bigger facility with more books for everyone and every subject especially for the books on the syllabus.

Looking forward to an Improved Queen's College, A transfer student.

Prefects Dear Editor, I am grossly appalled at the way in which the current prefect body has been selected. Has anyone ever sat down to think about how is it exactly that these socalled prefects are tagged with their fancy gold pins and el ite gold and black ties?

Has anyone ever noticed 1he not-so-long skirts and too long nails that some of the female prefects opt to don? Has anyone ever stopped to ask why some prefects come to school late but never sign the late book? What exactly happens to prefects when they break the rules? I’ll tell you what... nothing I If that is truly what being a prefect is all about then where’s the paper? I wish to sig n up.

Has anyone ever stumbled upon a few prefects playing a friendly game of cards yet those prefects in turn ceased your cards? Yes I’m sure it’s happened to you at least once. I acknowledge that no student passes through Queen's College without playing cards but at the same time the prefect body has a role to play in the school—break the rules just like everyone else. Didn't they teach us that actions speak louder than words? Yes l grew up on that saying and therefore I say that the prefect body is just an easier way to break the rules and therefore everyone should be prefects if we want to keep things fair isn't that so?

Perhaps the authorities disagree with me on this one. But if they would like to see an improvement in the behaviour and the standards of Queen’s College they will be a little more alert and careful the next time around. Teachers I’m warning y ou, choose wisely or let us all reig n unani mously as one lawless society.

Being a good sport, the young lady took it all in good stride but unfortunately came down with influenza the next day. The lesson learnt?

Hats off Crazy false starts can happen to anyone (then again...).

That football's popularity rose at Q.C thanks to its share of celebrities from “bloojhoom" who made quite the splash (into the trench), to “anglez" who drove the ball into an unsuspecting young lady’s head claiming he had the wrong angle (go figure).

That the football team felt as low as dir- when one of their players scored the winning goaW or the opposing team.

At seventeen years old, Daniel Ram is already a name on the lips of many Guyanese and West Indians on the whole. Already famous at Queen’s C o lle g e fo r his a ca d e m ic and a th le tic achievements, Daniel has become somewhat of a

prodigy, making Queen’s College history at the 2003 Caribbean Examinations Council meet, by gaining fourteen passes.

Daniel achieved distinctions in Mathematics, Physics, History, English Language, English Literature and Spanish. He received a Grade One in Social Studies, Agricultural Science (double award), Chemistry and Biology and Grade Twos in French, Information Technology and Music.

This high-achiever has always been on the ball in academics. From Prep A to present, Daniel has firmly remained in the top three of his class at all times and at the National Common Entrance Examination copped seventh place. In athletics he has made it to the inter-zone: track and field events, has represented Queen’s College in Cricket and Football and has been the captain of “H" Wooley House for the past two years.

Nevertheless, his achievements do not stop there. Daniel began formal music classes at the age of eleven but was introduced to it years before through his mother. Since then, he has been one of 3

his church’s musicians playing mostly keyboard (and now drums), helping out at school assemblies and accompanying the Queen’s College choir.

At the National level, Daniel has been a part of a number of recitals including the 'Young Musicians on Stage’ and was one of the only three people in Guyana to write Music at the Caribbean Examinations Council level.

Complementing his Curriculum Vitae is the prestigious Royal Board of Music Examinations where he completed the first five grades in theory and six grades at the practical level and was offered a job in Trinidad when he played there. Although renowned for his mastery of the keyboard, Daniel can also play the drums, a bit of the recorder, the steel pan and is learning the guitar at present.

Owing to his overall well-roundedness, Daniel has been pertinently dubbed the “Queen’s College Model Student* by none other than Miss Gem Rohlehr who at the time was the Deputy Head Mistress (acting). This is accredited to Daniel’s flowing list of extra-curricular activities which cont’d on page 4

Tribute to Miss Rohlehr As an English Major at York University, it was a great privilege to be primed for my future by one of the b e st E n g lis h Literature teachers to grace the halts of Queen's College, As I reflect on the teachings of Miss Gem R ohlehr, I r e m e m b e r one quotation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, that always stood out in one form or another, “frailty, thy name is woman.”

As I proceed in my tribute to a great teacher,! must commence by establishing that Miss Rohlehr has defied this statement in every shape and form by her words, actions and generous contributions to Queen's College.

During my time under her guidance, Miss Rohlehr was Head of the English Language Department and a Senior Mistress who had the honour of being called upon to fill the shoes of Deputy Head Mistress, and later on as Head Mistress. Each time she was called upon to serve, she delivered and delivered well. Not only did she play an active role in Queen's College, her leadership roles extended to her community through her church as well.

Although very traditional. Miss Rohlehr was one of the most open-minded teachers I encou ntered at Queen’s College, with a vision for

All of this may have been unlikely were it not for everyone who has spoken to or spent time with him because they all influenced his life somehow. He also thanks his teachers (parents inclusive), his best friend and friends of course. He was “blessed with the best possible family and friends and a God who loves him [me]."

Yet throughout all the hype surrounding his elite oerformance at C.X.C, Daniel has managed to n provided with the opportunity of being heard a lot more as well as ask questions of people whom he would never have met otherwise, remain modest and holds that he has received, “too much publicity for his [my] liking." When asked about how people's expectations of him in the future affect him, he simply replied, “People seem to expect me to demolish 'A’ Levels, Hey, I'm human— I'll give it my best shot. That's all I fanniijfi— nnnrnmis«s ii ist mv best."

change and an improved Queen's College. Ever busy and giving one hundred and ten percent at the job, Miss Rohlehr taught at almost every level of English at Queen’s College including C.A.P.E Communications Studies for which she was expected to mark more than forty School Based Assessments.

Although at times she was very stern, she was also very concerned about her students' welfare after all, her sternness stemmed from the belief that everyone could reach their potential if they stuck to the rules. Who could forget the active role Miss Rohlehr played then and even now in “H” Wooley House, supporting and pushing for her house to remain at the higher part of the athletic food chain?

She must also be credited for trying her best to fulfil all obligations. I remember coming to school early in the morning and waiting until after three in the afternoon, when her duties as Acting Principal were finished in order to complete my ’A’ Level Literature texts. Most persons tired at the end of the day would have left me to finish the work on my own, but she fulfilled her promise and it was through this that we were able to complete the necessary reading.

I am indebted to you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done for me these past two years and I hope that you always remain the dedicated individual you are, All the best at your Masters, I salute you on a job well done.

Old remedies for curing tuberculosis included eating a mixture of snails dissolved in salt, and inhaling the fumes of cow dung. A Nineteenth century newspaper carrying advertisements for cigarettes, claimed that the product could cure asthma, hay fever, chronic bronchitis and influenza. I think I will go drink some coffee for my insomnia.

Daniel’s role models are his parents and his best friend Sarah Lai man because they have been an example to follow and have been incredibly supportive in his studies and life as a whole. Sarah has been and is incredibly strong and he admires her for that.

Envisioned for the future is firstly to do well at his General Certificate and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency examinations, and to improve on his music. Career wise he sees himself becoming a microbiologist which he describes as a good job.

So does he long for a superpower like the rest of us? Well, he'd take hyper speed or flying so that he could finish his studies quickly and still have enough time to enjoy the rest of his life to the fullest or go anywhere at anytime.

At the close of the interview Daniel's advice to the youths of today was, “Don't give up! Once you have God on your side, and you play your part, he'll always see you through." Best of luck at your 'A' Level examinations Daniel!

Tribute to Mrs. Roberts M r s. W e n d e l R o b e r t s b e c a m e headmistress 1998, but to many of us she was more that just our headmistress. Her contribution to Queen's College came in many forms. We remember her as an indefatigable woman- teacher, mother and friend. When at last she gave over the baton of leader to someone else, she had already left an impression in our minds. As a teacher she taught lessons in biology, but as heartache, she taught lessons in life.

Whenever we were among those who were misbehaved and we had to go up to her office, the intense fear we felt was soon dissipated as she, in all her sternness, smiled.

Her smile we will always remember for its comforting nature.

We will also remember Mrs. Roberts for being steadfast in her duties. She wouid always try to complete her tasks on time especially when it was related to her beloved students. She was always willing to help us and the advice she gave was always useful. She also sought to make us well-rounded persons in terms of academic excellence, as well as co-curricular activities and religion. She taught us that no matter how high we think we have climbed God can take us higher. She was a person who led by example.

We were inspired the examples she has given to us and moved by the immense amount of care she showed us during her tenure. We therefore wish to display our appreciation for her and what she has given to us and to Queen's College. Thank you the bottom of our hearts, we love you Madam Headmistress.

What Child IS This!

Every adult, whether biological or surrogate parent or guardians would have utterred the words, “What Child Is This,” either in despair, anger or surprise or with extreme satisfaction as they face the challenges or the joys of child moulding and child development.

These challenges become evident in the various approaches to child training and development posited by educators, sociologists, social workers, counsellors, psychologists church leaders and parents.

The phrase, “Single Parent" used to identify a child's status and social experience has become the most used hyperbolic by parents, educators and social workers; it is often used to evoke pity and influence ones action as one interacts with the products of this family type. Sixty years ago the term, “Single Parent” was only mentioned in close circles or not at all and the products of such a family type were expected to show grit and promise.

On the other hand, the child is given excessive freedom and is treated as a young adult despite the c h ild ’s stage of development. The child is given the freedom to dress and act like adults. Some adults

How can the school clarify? offer minimal supervision and provide a laissy-laire environment where the child is allowed to make most of the decision or create imperativesforthe adult.

Although the works of fiction are not used to normalise or proselyte in the classroom, the various giures of literature encapsulate and expose the vicissitudes of the child’s world and the efforts of the child and a significant other to make a difference and to carve a niche for himself or herself.

William Blake’s poems, “Songs of Innocence and Experience;" Charles Dickens works “Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and Hard Times among others; Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre are replete with the experiences of child characters and the intense situations which they face. William Golding's “Lord of the F lies” reveals the acron ies of the environment and its impact upon the child; the importance of the individual’s will and the role of the adult world. John Wydnam’s novel The Chrysen lids, foregrounds the child’s ability to engage in logical thinking to conceptionalise situations, to building strong relationships, to demonstrate responsible and trustworthy attitudes, to create change.

The novel, "To Kill A Mocking Bird” written by Harper Lee uses as its central characters, Atticus Finch who understand the child’s world as he moulds and fashions Scout and Jem.

Literature is one subject which offers that scope.

John Dervey (1859-1952) viewed education as the access to the growth of the individuals which help children understand and control their environment. George Weber, Ronald Edmond, et al progressionists, posit that an effective school offers a democratic educational approach and focus on child centred interests.

Richard Strong, Harvey Selves and Amy Robinson in the book, Readings in Education (2001) ninth edition posit that children need to be motivated. According to these educators children seek success which satisfy their need to be masters; children are curious which satisfy their quest for understanding; children strive for ongurality which satisfy their need for self-esteem; children want strong relationships and bonding which satisfy their need for involvement. ^

The school's role is to assist society in clarifying the concept of the child. But this role can be successful only if the school understands its role in society and if it is given the scope to develop the curriculum.

The school must seek to provide answers to the probing statement, “What Child Is This”.

Through a diversified curriculum - children must be exposed to the fine arts, lessons which focus on care, grooming and nutrition must be introduced. Health issues must be dealt with or pursued with passion. The curriculum must depose children to their civic and moral responsibilities in bi-cultural or multi cultural environment; children must participate in critical thinking and evaluation exercises through its co-curriculum and extra-curriculum activities the school must provide children with the opportunity to develop leadership skills.

The school at all levels has the answers but the community must invest with that authority. When all others fail it is the school archives that store the information of the child’s true identity to which many would have to turn.

International Music Celebrity Visits Queen’s College In March 2004 a lucky few had the privilege of meeting the international Guyanese-born music phenomenon Eddy Grant. Mr. Grant paid a surprise visit to Queen's College, to give a thought provoking speech in the auditorium to all those who were enthusiastic to listen.

In his speech, Mr. Grant noted that there was a lack of culture on the part of Guyanese who sought to import music and follow the Western Culture. He implored the students to develop an appreciation for local things especially music. He also surprised them by saying that all his songs were under copyright and he was one of the few artistes in the world to have that protection. Mr. Grant stressed on the importance of culture to the development of a country and compared the Western Culture to Guyana.

The conclusion of Mr. Grant's speech left a change in the atmosphere of his audience proving that his words had definitely worked their charm. As a result several students had questions for the celebrity and after the question and answer segment, Mr. Grant provided interested persons with a chance to capture the moment in a photograph with the celebrity.

In mixing bowl, whisk eggs, coconut milk, sugar, nutmeg and ginger. Strain into 6 custard cups just above 3/4level. Place custard cups in a large pan 8 inch x 12 inch (20 cm x 30 cm). Add hot water in large pan (water level = custard level) Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours. Loosen sides of custard using a sharp, narrow-blade knife.

Unmold on to a serving dish. Decorate with mango coulis and sprinkle with toasted shredded coconut.

Place pumpkin in large mixing bowl. Sift together flour, salt and spices, add sugar and flour mixture to pumpkin. Mix or blend until smooth. Slowly blend in beate n eggs. C o m b in e molasses and evaporated milk.

Pour mixture into pie shell and cover edge of crust with narrow strips of tin foil to prevent overbrowning. Pre-heat oven to 4 0 0 'F (200° C) and bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325“ F (160° C) and bake until set about 35 minutes. Remove strips of foil 10 minutes before completion. Allow pie to cool completely (about 2 hours) before adding topping.

Rebuilding Queen’s Colh November 16, 1997 was a date that would change the lives and alter the memories of all those affiliated with Queen’s College. It was the night that broke hearts and threatened to tear apart a lifetime of tradition. It was the night ol the devastating fire.

Although seven years have passed since that date, Queen’s College has survived and through its immense sufferance, has emerged as a more advanced and modern school with the aid of countless dedicated persons.

Queen's College has seen trying times, the picking up of pieces that could never be put back together again, in an attempt to move on after the fire; the packing up of the remaining useful materials to carry to a temporary home in South Ruimveldt and more so, the moving back to Queen's College to be welcomed by two buildings instead of one.

Roaming the halls of Queen's College before the fire was convenient, with corridors that led to virtually any part of the school. After the fire, accessing certain parts of the school meant climbing down several flights cf stairs then to the next building where teachers and students alike would have to trek up a flight of stairs again.

Yet, everyone stood strong, knowing that their beloved school would soon be rebuilt as promised.

Promises to begin rebuilding before the end of 1997 were made, but those promises failed to be delivered and still, Queen's College teachers and students grit their teeth and bore it.

In 2000, a final blueprint of the new structure was made and plans for reconstruction were divided into three phases. The first phase was aimed at

providing a new administrative block for a Staff size of about approximately one hundred inclusive of toilet facilities, kitchenette, storage areas and rooms for the Principal, Deputy Head and administrative staff, the design also considered a Visitors'Lobby.

The additional parts of this phase were the auditorium which was one of the more important things since regular assembly was disrupted due to unforeseen weather conditions which was beyond anyone's control, as well as a dining hall.

As the plans began to finally get underway, there were several sacrifices that had to be made.

Double Sessions were implemented to facilitate afternoon construction consequently causing school to start and finish early with thirty minute periods instead of the usual forty. Lunch and break periods were also intruded upon, but school managed to go on and so did construction.

At long last, Queen’s College stands proudly with most of the promised facilities fulfilled and with even more still to come. The final phase was originally set to complete in the year 2005 but time will tell. On the positive side, the planning committee met in July after school closed to discuss plans for the next phase and hopefully these plans are already underway.

Congratulations to those who refused to give up hope that Queen’s College would be restored as well as to those who fought effortlessly to ensure that this vision took form. It is an honour to know that Queen's College stands united again.

- A TRIBUTE TO THE CLASS OF 2004 it seems like only yesterday that I started out this prestigious institution dreading the thought of having to attend Queen's College (the mere thought was simply not inviting). For me, it was simply a case of getting in, getting my stuff done and leaving with no strings attached. I received a rude awakening instead.

In September 2002, the Lower 6" Fc'm class was huge and made up of children from different schools, 87% of whom would not return. Some were friends from Primary School whom I hadn't seen in quite a long time. 1intermingled, made and hung out new friends.

Within our class like anyone other, there were groups: the smart ones, the jokers, the guys who played cards all day, etc. We sat in our groups in The class of 2003-2004 class, at lunch and did everything together and Ihen sadly, Lower 6 ended and more than half the class evaporated, leaving some quite ‘groupless'.

Upper 6 commenced and most of us (me included) got acquainted with people whom I never though; I would ever speak to. We'd sit in class talking and laughing, then heading to the library where we surprisingly made noise (some prefects we were). It was during planning for our graduation and prom t h a t ! noticed something quite strange—we were to give an impromptu Thank You' to all those who joining together (a radical idea). Our cohesive force stood by him and helped him during the past year, was most brilliantly displayed during our carwash, especially the female prefects such as his Deputy, many cars were washed, people soaked and colds Renata Valz who stepped up to the plate and filled caught as well, but the best part was being together his shoes whenever necessary. Also mentioned and having fun. were the Treasurer of the Graduating Class Alana During the inter-house sports, our class members Hodgson, the Secretary of the Graduating Class demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities as and Prefect Body Jo’ann Melville in addition to Kean well as athletic ability (no names), this was Chase and Rhondel Weever who played an active encouraging, because if we are the future, I can't role in the organising of fundraising events as well wait to get there e.g. have you ever seen Sasha as the decoration of Graduation and Prom. sprint? “Damn I That girl’s got talent!”

‘End of the chapter; but not the end of the book.

The aptly titled Queen’s College Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2004 kicked off its proceedings at five o’clock on Wednesday 30th June. Donned in black caps and gowns, the Graduates and Valedictorian (clad in a special golden cap and gown), marched into the Queen's College Auditorium to the beat of Sir Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance.

The Commencement Speech was given by the Deputy Head Prefect/Class Vice President Renata Valz who reflected on the growth of all the graduates over their seven (or less) years at Queen’s College. She noted that this was not the end of the book, but merely the beginning of a new phase and chapter in their lives and before introducing the Chairperson, Miss Valz left with her classmates with a recital of William Ernest Henley's ’Invictus’ urging the graduates to never let the burning flame of Queen’s College go out.

Following the commencement speech and introduction of the Chairperson, Mr Teni Housty Attourney-At-law, took up his place with a brief speech then called on the then Acting Principal Miss Gem Rohlehr, to offer the Principal’s Remarks. Miss Rohlehr commented on the class’s activities over * the year 2003-2004 and reminisced on some of her ► fonder memories of the graduates with whom she * had the pleasure of teaching during some point at » Queen’s College.

After Marlon Valloza's unique goodbye which took the form of a rap song, the Head Prefect Quacy Grant followed with an impressive report which thoroughly outlined the goals and successes of the class and Prefect Body for the year. After the delivery of his report, Mr Grant borrowed sometime

"Ualebictorian’s Ibbrtss As I stand before you, class of 2004 on this the day of our graduation, I find it difficult to express my sentiment on the completion of High School.

However I have Julius Caesar to thank for his famous quote: “Veni Vidi Vici", “ I came, I saw, I conquered".

In a way I am certain this is a saying that we can all relate to. During the last seven years of ours lives, many challenges and trials have confronted us, and we have in turn confronted them whether willingly or unwillingly.

In many instances our patience has been tested, our endurance examined, our motivation diminished and our emotions intensified.

But we have tried and even struggled and now we graduate. We've reached the end of our journey and yet ironically the beginning of another. We must now undertake our adulthood and life doesn’t get any easier.

As a matter of fact it’s only going to become more difficult as our responsibilities expand and our garden of daily tasks blossoms into a forest.

But worry not. because if you can stand for hours in this very same auditorium for assembly on Mondays and Fridays, if ycu have lost many hours of sleep to complete an SBA for the next day, and if you can understand integration even when everything on the blackboard seems Greek then there should be no reason why we cannot boldly embrace life and it’s adversities.

After all this was the true purpose of high school, to prepare us for life. And what an experience it has been, it will leave a lasting impression on us all.

In retrospect I have realized that our seven years of high school was not entirely about striving to attain good grades or retaining massive mountains of knowledge but more so it was learning about ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses, how to interact with others, how we perform under pressure and this will all be very valuable as we remove these famous golden ties, leave Queens College and follow our own individual paths into adulthood. follow our own individual paths into adulthood.

I urge you all to go forth, be yourselves and do all that you are capable of. Make masterpieces of your lives, something that you can all appreciate. Let it be your best effort because the ramifications of hard work today will be success tomorrow. Keeping in mind that success is not measured by how much you have, but it is more a measure of how much you have learnt, how far you've reached and how much you have accomplished. I wish you the best of luck for the journey ahead, learn from your failures and be grateful for your triumphs.

Above all don't forget your friends and Queens College and remain faithful and useful, always.

The Queen’s College Remembrance Day Service was held on Tuesday, November 11*’, 2003 to honour the memory of those former Queen's College Masters and students, who laid down their lives as they fought and died in the two World Wars of the twentieth centuries.

The annual ceremony commenced with the traditional singing of the hymn, "0 God Our Help In Ages Past" which was proceeded by ind ividual addresses from the Acting Headmistress Gem Rohlehr and Acting Deputy Headmistress Miss Bhoj.

Poppies were sold to students and teachers alike, who wore the remembrance symbol to honour the memory of the fallen heroes of both World Wars. Proceeds from this activity were given to the Veteran Fund of the Guyana Legion.

The Head Prefect Quacy Grant and Deputy Head Prefect Renata Valz bore the traditional torch of reciting the names of the former Masters and students who fell in the first and second World Wars. When this phase was completed, they escorted the youngest male, Rakindranauth Tiweri

and youngest female, Laua Chianne Thomas (students of Queen’s College), to hang the wreaths (made from poppies) next to the World War I and World War !l plaques in the auditorium. A commemorative moment of silence was observed then the National Anthem was sung as the final phase of the service.

New Canteen for Queen’s College Although many Queen’s College students, staff, and indeed, patrons, were chest-fallen to see the fall of the old faithful Canteen area, we can ail appreciate the welcome improvements this initiative can bring to the school.

Demolishing the old stalls implied that the new Canteen would be erected in its place, and the previous proprietress, Jackie would have a hand in running it. However it is saddening to see that since construction has yet to begin, this loyal part of the school for some 17 years is faced with the inconvenience of selling out in the open. We can only sympathize.

In the mean time, the arrangement with a Branch of Demico has proved adequate in supplying the needs of the student community as well as the teachers, most of whom don’t have time to make lunch themselves. The rotating main dish brings variety and fresh foods along with seating accommodations are welcome changes.

Of course nothing is perfect and the single-line cashier still provides a hassle, but where isn’t there? It’s literally a small price to pay as the items offered are far cheaper than their past and present adversaries. Things are moving smoothly and one has to wonder if this will evolve into a permanent venture.

Whatever the case, the average student is content thus far and will hope that Queen’s College continues to strive towards an even higher overall standard.

Teachers’ Appreciation Day Following the great footsteps of their predecessors, the Queen’s College Prefect Body for the year 2003-2004 organized the sixth annual Teacher’s Appreciation Day on April 23,2004, The short but e nterta inin g program commenced with a Procession of Teachers ushered to their seats by the Lower Sixth Formers. After all the teachers were seated, the omniscient presence of God was called upon by representatives from the Bible Club, The Hindu Society and the Islamic Society. Prefects Kenita Wilkinson and Rhondel Weever, gave their opening remarks and handed the floor over to the excellent chairpersons, Head Prefect Quacy Grant and Senior Prefect Anupama Bulkan, The program was exceptionally executed and showcased the superb talents within Queen’s College.

The first formers lent their voices to the song “Miracles" in love for their teachers and Nicola English did a dramatic presentation of one of her poemswhich was written specially for the occasion.

Joel Browne then performed a musical rendition which truly music to one’s ears and the Guest Speaker Mr Romeo Me Adam (Assistant Chief Education Officer) presented his feature address on love and appreciation of teachers and their general function in our lives. The most special part of the ceremony was yet to come.

The presentation of prizes was done by the Prefects on behalf of the student body which stirred up excitement as the Geography teacher Mr Patrick Bernard kissed the Deputy Head Prefect on the cheek when he received his token. Luckily, this did not overshadow the long awaited presentation of

The unwelcome guest / The vampire who came for breakfast I noticed a group of her kind while I was on my evening stroll in the gardens. For a few moments I paused and viewed them. They appeared so harmless, mere by standers-by dressed modestly in grey, one could not believe the pain they caused us. I decided to take a longer route around so that I would not have to pass them.

When I returned home, I continued to think about them. Their only way of getting food was by stealing it, and often I have seen the owner of the meal push them away violently, even slap them.

Is it fair to treat anyone this way, for are they not subjected to hunger? Do they not have the right to eat? And the more fortunate should be charitable, isn't it?

Despite knowing the answer to these questions was in the affirmative, I remained uncertain, until I went to bed and finally dropped off into a dreamless sleep.

The next morning brought peace of mind, and I was able to put that sad group out of my mind. It was a good thing too, for the morning bustle kept me quite busy. I went through the usual weekday

the Teacher of the Year award. The very dumfounded but deserving recipient of this award was the Miss Psyche Thierens, Head of the Mathematics Department. Miss Thierens’ love and dedication to her students and work at Queen’s College made her the best choice for this year.

The final item was performed by girls from different year levels, who paraded into the auditorium in a fashion display and onto the stage where they took up their places and launched into dance. The ceremony was then brought to a close

by Senior Prefect Jo'ann Melville who gave the Vote of Thanks followed by the School Song anc National Anthem.

On behalf of the Graduating Class of 2004 a: well as the 2004 Lictor Committee thank you once again teachers, your service will never be forgotten nor will the role you played in moulding us as well as our lives.

Renata Valz routine, trying to do a hundred things before leaving for work. When I glanced at the clock, I noticed 1 was late. Gathering up my purse. I headed out the door.

As always, I paused for a moment by my prize chrysanthemums, and suddenly felt a sharp pain.

I looked down and saw her. The delicate little creature, daintily dressed in grey had parted from her group and had decided that I would be breakfast. Irritated, 1 brought my hand down on the feasting mosquito, extinguishing the life in its’ tiny body in an instant.

The reaction was so sudden that 1didn't have time to think. In confusion, I lifted my hand and saw blood smeared on it, with a little bit of my crushed visitor mixed up with it. I hadn't meant to kill her, just prevent her from making a morsel of my leg.

Silently I went to the garden tap and washed the female’s remains and blood from my hand and leg.

The day continued, and presently I forgot about her. But humans are such curious creatures. The world is a giant ecosystem. Therefore mosquitoes must have some purpose, remote as it seems.

Then should humans be allowed to kill them so mercilessly? Weil, I didn't care. I never did like mosquitoes.

Hitting Your Funny Bone The funny thing is, the funny bone isn’t a bone at all, but a nerve, and hitting it is anything but funny -- in fact, it's painful. The nerve that is referred to as the funny bone is the ulnar nerve, which extends down the arm, across the elbow, and into the hand.

It provides sensation to the little and ring fingers and activates many of the muscles in the hand, according to the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons web site.

"The ulnar nerve happens to be very superficially placed in the back of your elbow," says Ed Toriello, MD, a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. "At this spot, it lies directly under the skin and runs in a hard, bony groove on its way to your hand."

Why is hitting it guaranteed 1o make you cringe with pain, rather than laugh, as its nickname suggests? W IT H D R . D Sometime back I was suffering from a mild case of writers’ block. I had already put many ideas to paper (that's why I said mild not chronic) but my ideas were not flowing into each other and I was still unsure what I was going to use as my theme.

Everyone knows that you must have a theme or else your essay goes nowhere and achieves nothing.

Now I still suffer from the occasional writers’ block but needless to say, here I am advising you on how to avoid writers'block.

Step One is knowing yourself. While some of us work better when we start a project early and get time to manipulate ideas, the rest of you are like me - at cur most creative when we’re under serious pressure (Renata, I must confess....! actually

Sometimes, even thinking about yawning will make you yawn. And when the person next to you does it, forget about it - you’ll yawn, too. With all this talk about yawning, in fact, you’ve probably already yawned.

"Ayawn is an instinctive behaviour: You don't have to learn to do it, and yawns are even present before birth," says Robert Provine, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Is the myth that yawns are actually contagious true?

"When one person in a group yawns, over half of the people in the group will yawn within five minutes,

and the rest will at least be tempted to yawn, says Provine, who has been researching yawning for more than 20 years. "What is surprising is that virtually anything having to do with yawning triggers a contagious reaction."

Provine explains that while yawning is highly contagious, so are other human behaviors, like laughter, and this reaction is actually very normal -- and ancient. 3. Do you wake up in the morning and cringe when you think about that overdue assignment? If yes...chronic 4. Do you wake you 6 hours before you leave for school to study for a test to be given the next day (or the same day depending on what side of midnight you're on),

Step Three therefore is learning how to prevent writer's block. You need to give yourself enough time to gather ideas rather than brainstorm in one day. Always write your ideas down wherever you are. It helps. One idea is all you need for a theme, everything else falls into place. One last piece of adviceif you don't know how to start at the top then start at the middle. Now let’s see how good I am at taking my own advice.

Short Story

to i The air swirled thinly around my nose and my breath came in short ragged gasps. My chest felt as though a powerful force was trying to crush me out of existence and thus I found it painstakingly difficult to breathe. My head was spinning and my legs felt as though they had carried an enormous burden up the three-thousand feet of the mountainside that I had just travelled. I had yet to complete another kilometre before I reached the top of the mountain but I was now tired beyond belief. Every muscle screamed with weariness and I felt drained and void of strength. The fact that the path that I had been following had now ended leaving nothing but jagged rock and a steep precipice was deterring and I almost felt like giving up my quest. The thick atmosphere also did not improve the matter, stressing my already oxygen-depleted lungs and leaving me struggling to elicit oxygen from the surrounding air. I could go no further and as such I searched for the nearest, largest rock and fell down with my back against it. When I had managed to regulate my breathing and had regained some strength I surveyed the landscape that I had trekked. It had been a difficult climb as the terrain was very steep, almost vertical and very rugged. At some times the sharp stones had jutted out at every angle providing firm holdings, as well as instruments of pain as their sharp, jagged edges had repeatedly dug into my sides. And at other places the ground offered nothing more than an inch of crag, making it hard to get a good grip on the mountainside. I remembered how I had cursed those holdingslarge and small- for the precarious positions that they had often put me in but now, as I looked down, I was amazed at the image they portrayed: crude and untamed, despite futile efforts by man to carve a path into the rock. They were walls, unbreakable and immovable to nothing but time, protecting something hidden and precious and impeding entry to intruders, adding to the mystery and breathtaking beauty of the scene. It also made the land seem dangerous and invoked a feeling of adventure, a feeling that was soon deterred by the ruggedness of the mountain. And the surrounding landscape was breathtaking indeed as from my vantage point I could see far across the coast, over the green canopies of the forest below, and over the bluegreen bay that lay beneath, to the blue line that was the horizon. The trees coalescing one with the other, formed a thick green blanket that resembled the snow covered trees of my homeland. Ocassionally, it was broken by the brown of the twigs and branches that comprised the mainframe of the tree but it shimmered green and from apparence gave one the belief that it was teeming with wildlife and other kinds of flora. And as I peered intently at the trees they came alive, the essence of their life given to them by the magic of a passi ng sea breeze that

tumbled over and under and about. And the trees beneath danced wildly to the whistling and cheering of an applauding audience.

Even the small city, which stood oddly against the natural landscape, somehow added to the picturesque scene below, especially when viewed from this height. I could see the miniature-sized houses, and even the lodge where I had been staying seemed small as if it was crafted wood, modelled and painted to perfection by an experienced caftsman. The town was small and isolated from the fast-paced activities of the outside world. Tranquility and serenity were the lords of this area and the inhabitants were hermits, wanting nothing to do with tourists or adventurers just as most tourists wanted nothing to do with them.

Beyond the town lay the bay and then the ocean,

ever interrupted by a rolling wave, parting and rising above the surface only to fall and subside into the deep. The sun was setting and it's red and orange rays engulfed the dull blue of the ocean, setting the cool waters into a fiery blaze and casting upon the land a firey glow. The entire scene that lay before mine eyes seemed unreal, like an illustration taken from a storybook or like a painting freshly painted by the Creator above. At that moment, I realized the beauty that nature had to offer and instantly my spirit was renewed. I no longer felt tired and already my breathing was beginning to adapt to the rigor placed upon it. I stood and continued on my arduous journey feeling like a new man, a man allowed the privilege of indulging in the secrets of nature and unlocking a few of the vast mysteries of the unknown.

Your distractions exist only in your private life but you can’t allow them to affect your school life, so for you, it may be a good idea to put in more hours at Q.C. staying until 4 or 5 in the afternoon (to “study") and exploit the religious societies at Q.C. (no I don’t mean ask a member to do your homework although it may be a good backup plan).

Have you ever considered that God has all the answers? If he doesn’t work then you may want to get baptised either for the first time or again but please don't ask your friend to throw you in the trench because water pollution is a serious offence.

Dipping in Q.C.'s trench will not dispel the obeyah that someone has obviously worked on you nor will it have a minty aftertaste; you may want to try the one in Lamaha Street instead (hold your breath if you see a carcass) after ail, the scent from Lamaha’s Trench will chase away anything. I also have to recommend you utilise the sleep button on your remote. I know that you despise getting up but whatever happened to taking a bath? The first step is to acknowledge that you have a serious mental problem (please refer to my article on writers' block). The second step is to take a bath. You may also be suffering from an overpowering smell which has caused your brain to suffer from fatigue so use some Vitamin B which usually helps with the brain and bodily functions.

Dear Dr. D, I have a chronic studying condition. My mother said somebody do me which is layman's terms means somebody “worked obeyah on me” which can be further deduced to mean “somebody performed black magic" on me I however blame myself. Then again, who can blame me when all those lovely bikini clad women patrol the shores of Baywatch or when Monday Night WCW RAW comes on or better yet when Saturday Night PB Network raw-er comes on? Television, the internet and everyone else just makes it too hard for me to get up from my bed except to relieve myself. Does anyone truly see a problem? I don’t think so. G u n s h o ts J t t D n iv n Rat-da-tat-tatt. Rad-dat-tat. The shots rang out loud and clear, amplified by the silence of the early dawn.

I awoke startled, but in no way afraid. It was a norm in my neighbourhood for shoot-outs to occur between the gang members in the area, sometimes at odd hours in the morning and at other times in broad daylight. However dangerous it may have been I felt safe and snug in my bed, knowing that my older sister, Marcel, was sleeping in the next room.

Marcel was the only remaining relation I had left.

Never having known my father and having lost my mother about nine years ago, at the tender age of six, I had depended on my sister to provide food, clothing and all my other necessities. In a way we were very close and I loved her very much, as much as she loved me. Another reason for us being so close may have been due to her vowi ng to our dying mother that she would look after me until I was able 1o look after myself. And she had kept her word. I was but fifteen and had never had a cause to complain. Marcel had always provided for me and had always ensured that I received the best education that was possible. Even when things had gone from bad to worse, when Marcel had lost her job due to a technicality, she had found a way to provide for me. Her new job kept her late out at nights, sometimes into the morning hours, and during the day. It left little time for us to be together and already our relationship had began to slowly deteriorate. Fortunately whatever time we had together we spent as closely and as joyfully as we could.

Thinking about her, I suddenly became impulsed to check her room just to make sure that she had arrived safely. I got up slowly and made my way over to her room. I rapped lightly on her door and hearing no answer called out her name. When I heard no further response, I opened her door and seeing no-one entered the room. It was situated right next to mine in our minute apartment which held space for barely one person. Having rarely gotten the chance to view the room I eagerly glanced around taking in every detail. It was smaller than mine having only enough space for a dresser, a wardrobe and a bed. The walls were painted in a dull colour and there was only one window, situated above her dresser over-looking a dark alley below.

The dresser was to the right of the door and so I examined it first. Its surface was littered with bottles of make-up, lipstick and perfume. I also saw a very strange plastic parcel that resembled one of those packettes that 'Andrews' came in. Across the face of each was marked, in large block letters, 'C..O..N..O..O..M'. What was this? I had never heard of such a thi ng but simply assumed itto be an Andrews tablet but it felt different. It felt spongy and rubbery, as if filled with a liquid. It was rather strange and something about it gave me the shivers so I dropped it quickly and hastily returned to my

search, making every effort to avoid setting sight on the packet again.

The wardrobe was locked and I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find the key so, after her dresser, there was nothing else but my sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s small bed. When I looked at it I was overcome with a sudden terror. Of course she was not in it, but it was also very neat and had the appearance as though it had not been slept in. Not a wrinkle disturbed the smooth surface of the sheet and something about that stillness disturbed me greatly. As I moved towards it I kicked something with my foot. It was a small organiser. The kind that you kept appointments and addresses in. From the appearance of the thing I immediately knew that it was private but my curiosity overcame me and I flipped through it. I came across several phone numbers, addresses and names and what appeared to be a list of hotels and rooms. As I turned the pages a neatly folded page slithered to the floor. It fell silently and sadly and somehow I felt as thought this letter did not want to be read. As I looked at it I felt the importance of leaving it undisturbed as though reading it would set something terrible in progress. Yet I could not bear to ignore it and the more I looked at it the more silent the room became until suddenly, being unable to bear the deafening silence no longer I stooped and picked it up. It was then that something strange and incomprehensible happened: suddenly the room came alive. The strong odour of my sister's scent swirling thickly around the room, choking me and I heard her soft voice floating through the air and suddenly memories of our time together heavily weighted my mind. Finally I bear it no longer and rushed out of the room in fear, being followed haunted by her smell and her voice. I ran to the door, unbolted it and no sooner had I opened it than a terrible scream pierced the silence. This was immediately followed by a barrage of bullets the next thing I knew I was hugging the cold concrete floor as bullets whizzed over my head embedding themselves in the wooden walls and the concrete. I should have run back into the house and closed the door but a feeling of concern mixed with dread overcame me and I rushed out into the street. I tripped on something and fell unto my side, gasping for air with the wind knocked out of me.

The moment that I opened my eyes, I regretted it.

There, staring right back at me was a face, drained of all life yet so full of terror. Its eyes were open and its mouth twisted into a grimace. A bullet wound was visible in the centre of its forehead, from which blood continually flowed. I gagged sending a stream of vomit into the face and this made it look more grotesque and I felt more sickly than before. I got up and braced against the wall trying to get over the initial shock of the face. Yet the air was heavy with the scent of blood and death and when I closed my eyes all I could envision was that face staring

straight at me. Finally I gained enough strength to survey the scene that lay before mine eyes. The concrete walls were filled with a myriad of bulletholes and the sidewalk was chipped and clustered with pieces of stone. There were shards of broken glass from a nearby window-pane and fresh blood streaked slowly down the walls. There were three other bodies littered on the ground; two were huddled face down in a pool of blood and the other was sprawled atthe kerb.

Slowly a long low moan rose in the night air. It started off quietly building strength and then receded. I knew what it was. It was the exhalation of life, the sound of death. It was chilling and eerie and sent an unending bout of shivers through every fibre of my being. It started again, more weakly than before and then suddenly stopped. The echo of the sound resonated from the two huddled bodies into the empty streets. I staggered towards the two bodies, fear gripping me with each advancing step and I feared what lay among those bodies as much as I feared death itself. Something within me knew that some terrible horror lay hiding ready to jump and consume me. I hesitated as my hand neared the shoulder of one of the bodies and I suddenly wanted to run away, run far from these corpses, away from this street and the gunshots at dawn and I would take my sister and we would live someplace nice, somewhere away from those who wished to harm us, somewhere away from it all. Then with a quick pull I yanked the two bodies apart.

I gasped as I separated the tangled, bleeding body parts, one belonging to a male and the other to a female. My sister Marcel was lying face-down with a severe wound in her torso. Her body was bloodsoaked and her hair matted to her forehead. I held her as best as I could and tried screaming for help but nothing came out. There I stood until the first rays of the dawn cast their light upon the scene but it no longer seemed joyful and brilliant but reluctant and melancholy. By this time almost the whole block had assembled upon the scene of a small teen clutching a blood soaked body rocking it as though it were a child.

When the police arrived they dragged me kicking and screaming from her body, concerned as to whether I was injured but dismissing me and carting off the dead bodies when they saw that I was alright.

The details of the murder were unclear but it was evident that it was a gang war. And every night after, I dreamt. They were horrible dreams, always of the face with the bullet in its forehead and my vomit forever dripping down its face. Only its mouth no longer portrayed that of terror but a frightening sneer. And always it would descend upon my sister and I as we lay huddled on the sidewalk. It would always awaken me at the first rays of dawn, haunting me forever, reminding me of the day when I heard â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gunshots at Dawn".

If you have problem skin, it can make your life a daily misery. Here are some quick tips to help alleviate some oftlle basic problems, and also some advice on rejuvenating your facial texture with face masks.

MARVELLOUS MASKS Intrigued by the idea ot facial masks, but overwhelmed by the choices on offer? Here’s how to find one that suits your skin type: As far back as 1500 BC, humans were smearing mud on their faces to enhance their skin. Since then, women have used all kinds of natural ingredients as facial 'fast-fixes’, but today, there are loads of pre-made specialist masks on the market that take the guesswork out of making your own.

According to a leading Hollywood facialist, Aida Thibiant, the reason masks are so effective, is that "ingredients are more concentrated than those in lotions or cleansers, so they produce more noticeable benefits." This means that they shouldn’t really be used more than once a week, which is the ideal. Think of masks like exercise you won't get the benefits if you only use them every few months. If you can't manage a mask session that often, though, don’t tret. Just do it when you can. Finish off by using a warm, wet flannel to remove the mask and it will act as a gentle exfotiant, leaving skin instantly brighter and clearer looking.

You’ll get the best results if you choose a mask that targets your specific skin type and addresses any problems you have. If your skin is dry, for example, a moisturising mask can offer concentrated help, delivering nourishment to parched cells. Most of these masks have a cream or gel base that acts as a barrier, so that natural moisture stays in. Masks for dry skin can also be removed with a wet washcloth, or tissued off so that some of the moisture stays behind, quenching skin. Where not specified, products are available nationwide in major department stores and chemists.

Oily skin responds well to clay or mud-based masks. The clay hardens in 10-20 minutes, soaking up impurities and leaving skin feeling

soft and smooth. When the mask is removed, surface dirt, oil and dead skin cells adhere to the clay and are rinsed away with the mask. If you have dry skin, steer clear of these types of masks as they’ll be too harsh on your face.

For mature skin, masks can deliver a burst of temporary anti-ageing ingredients that instantly soften and smooth lines.

Proceed with caution if you have sensitive skin. If it flares up easily, a mask may aggravate It, so try applying a small amount of the mask on an area behind your ear and watch for any adverse reactions during the next day. If your skin stays clear, give the mask a go, but remove it immediately if you experience any burning or stinging. Other masks, meanwhile, are versatile enough to be used on all skin types.

The annual inter-house sports competition at Queen's College is one of the most important events for the academic year of all parties involved. The Queen's College administration emphasises academic and extracurricular activities as an integral part of all their student body's life for the development of a well-rounded and capable individual.

For an enthusiastic few, the afternoon of September 29th could come no sooner as it marked the commencement of what promised to be six days o f stiff competition in the first phase of competition commonly known as “Standard Trials”. The beginning o f Standard Trials saw house captains, athletes, non-athletes and sports officials hustling anxiously about the field.

House officials frantically rounded up the best and worst of their athletes to participate in the various fields desperate to earn sufficient points to win the competition.

Due to the preparation o f the track, which was still in progress during Standard Trials, several track events were postponed to a later date. The field events such as javelin, shot-put and discus took place without a hitch.

Despite the delay in a few events, Standard Trials was successful; the only snag was when a raucous group o f students performed sound clashes on the field. The sound clashes caused a gathering of rowdy students who were quickly dispersed by the immediate action of the very capable prefect body who were then on probation.

At Standard Trial's completion, Pilgrim House held a commanding lead over the other nine houses heading into Heats, which was only a few weeks away. But that was not the end it was merely the beginning, all steaming up for that special day when all the houses in their glamorous colours would shine brighter that day.

It finallv came, a sight to remember and a memory to last, it was the ANNUAL QUEEN’S COLLEGE SPORTS DAY 2003, it all started around 10a.m. when all the students from their houses got in their positions to have the traditional March Pass.

The March Pass was spectacular; it was so colourful as it portrayed the creativity of each house as all presented themselves in their unique attire. However only one house can be the winner and after weeks o f practice the most outstanding house was Cunn ingham finally winning the March pass after several years ofplacing second.

Mr. Laurie Lewis led the audience by opening the ANNUAL QUEEN'S COLLEGE SPORTS. As the day progressed, it was event after event, all the athletes by the end o f the day were tired and worn out, but it was not over. There was the most exciting events still left, all the participants from the heats held in the past week took part in their individual activity as the sprinting came under way, a day to recall, oh yes it was, however it was not all about the athletes, the teachers had their fun too especially the time when a certain teacher ran, the traditional 80 M Teachers race, the students being exited clustered the race track placing all eyes on the teachers as they heard the sound 'BOOM' coming from the starting line, their off, straight to the finish line, I say again, it was a site to remember as young and old teachers all took part. It was excitement to the end. Oh it was really a sight.

But sadly all good things must come to an end, as yet another day closed and the Queen's College Sports Day came to end, some being excited whilst some sad, but it was truly a day to record in the books of Queen's College history, as I close I say LIVE ON Queen's College Sports Day LIVE ON!!!

Interest in football at Queen's College has fluctuated since the 'Glory Days' of the 70's and 80's. As a result, seeing Q.C. on the InterSchool football scene has been like a flash of lightning-----here one moment, gone the next, but exciting nevertheless. And the trend continues for yet another year.

A few football enthusiasts, namely Kurt Da Silva and Keon Reece among others, decided to prepare a team to participate in the Coca-Cola U-18 football competition during the first term o f the 2003-2004 school year. Arrangements were made and practice sessions were scheduled for the s q u ad , w h ich was selected.

U n fo rtu n ately , many o f these football ers had another task at hand.

The Inter House Standard Trials was a lr e a d y underway, culminating in the annual Inter-House 'Day o f Sports'. This, together with the Inter-Schools track meet, and even the InterSchools cricket competition, dealt a crucial blow to the football preparation.

The team failed to gel, as the practice sessions were sparsely

attended, and this would prove to be too great a mountain to overcome.

Having not won a game in this competition for at least five years, and with previous defeats by 7-2, 4-2 and 5-1 margins, Q.C. was determined to improve.

After a spirited 1" half by the players, Q.C. held a 1-0 lead, but this was ultimately inadequate. A disastrous 2nd half saw Richard Ishmael scoring two goals. Moreover, another goal came offthebootofaQ .C. player, but this was added to our opponents score and they left as victors by a 31 margin. Despite this scorecard, it was an intriguing match. Nevertheless, we all still felt as low as D irk.

Once again, football was swept aside, until recently. The same group o f students initiated a football club in Q.C. We have a new coach, dedicated teachers, and m o re i mp ort an tl y p r om i s i n g players. Practice sessions are held from Monday to Thursday, with eaoii player required to practice on two of these days. With some experienced players still around, and lots o f 'new blood', we will endeavour to bring about a re-birth o f the 'G olden Days' o f Queen's College football.

They arouse your sexual desires If you spend a lot of time reading books that promote premarital sexual activity, it will be easier for you to be sexually active If you listen to music that degrades females and promotes them as

sex objects, it will be more difficult for you not to be sexually active. (This applies to both males and females)'Birds of a feather flock together’. If your close friends are sexually active, they are likely to pressure you to b e c o m e sexually active or continue being sexually active.

Girls the way you dress will communicate how you see yourself and how you value yourself. If you portray yourself as a sex object, boys will treat you that way.

If you get involved in a lot of kissing and fondling, you will end up having sex. 'Kissing is uptown shopping for downtown business.’

Plan to do things that are healthy and constructive when you go out together. If you don’t plan something positive, something that you did not plan is going to happen.

Remember sex is NEVER an emergency Remember that anyone who pressures you to ‘prove your love' does NOT have your best interest at heart. That person does not truly love you. Avoid being in secluded places where it is easy to end up having sex.

Some Sexually Transmitted Diseases -You can get a STD from ONE sexual encounter. Once you have an STD, even if you do not know, you pass this disease on to everyone with whom you have sex.

Condoms reduce the risk of contracting a STD, it does not prevent its transmission. MANY STDs have no signs or symptoms, and so you can only know if you go to a doctor or medical laboratory and ask to be tested for a specific disease.

Viral STDs These are all incurable Onceyouhave them, you have them for the rest of your life.

Bacterial STDs can easily be cured, once you know you have them.
