EDITORIAL Another academic year has ended this time in a fanfare of drums and a flurry of trumpets. Yes, at the end of the 1968-69 school year, Queen’s College commemorated its 125th year of existence with its assembly of past and present members locked in keen tussles, the past trying to show that they have not lost their zest, vigour and zeal. After all it was their efforts which had established Queen’s as the leading school in Guyana. The year also ended with the formal confirmation by the headmaster Mr. Doodnauth Hetram of his retirement from Queen’s after a period of eighteen years of dedicated work and sound administration.

With only a few months to go before Guyana becomes a republic we can proudly sit by and state, quite definitely that Queen’s had been instrumental in making such a co-operative republic possible. We had pften been exhorted by those in authority to give o f our best so that the youths will be ready to wrest from the older hands the reins of responsibility.

Contrary to expectations however, the authorities murmur that a youth take-over is impassible since not enough youthful Guyanese are capable of bearing the strains c f responsibility and of running an efficient system. The situation is ironical, for with great suavity they say that students particularly of Queen’s College must be more responsible and progressive and in the same breath cruelly repress any initiative and driginality which may differ from theirs.

The results of this year’s London Overseas Examinations are a standing confirmation; of the fact that Queen’s will continue to produce men, who will be able to take over from expatriates when Guyana attains its republican state. The Advanced Level Results were in the simplest language ridiculously high. Last year with an indrawn breath we were made aware of these results but of this year’s performance, I am positive that some have still not recovered fully from their pleasant but high-tensioned shock.

Yes shocked at the record amount of passes and even moreso by the distinctions in various subjects. We laud and congratulate these men for their astounding performance and in the same spirit warn those who had taken the Ordinary Level Examinations to aim in future at all round proficiency in subjects rather than a one subject mastery.

Extra curricular activities for this year with a few exceptions were not very creditable. This may have been because students devote too much time to academic work, and this is quite reasonable. It is hoped that a balanced approach to academic and extra-curricular activities will be instituted by the school authorities whereby cognisance is taken of a toy’s efforts in both facets.

As a passing note I would like to say that at the turn of this century the banner of Queen’s was held high through merit, and therefore to my fellow students of Queen’s College I say let this high esteem prevail as long as we are here.

At the beginning of the school year the annual inter-house cricket competition was held. For this competition we had to build a completely new team since most of our stalwarts had left school. Though we lost our first match against Nobbs House, “A” House known for its fighting spirit fought back trouncing Durban and Pilgrim Houses. In these matches Harewood and Nedd displayed fine batting and there was also able bowling by Rodrigues and Richmond.

As usual our house party was the best! It was exceptionally well planned and organised. Here we showed that we could work together and enjoy ourselves like brothers.

This year we won the inter-house athletic competition. Though we had much competition from Austin and Moulder Houses, and though a few of our athletes were injured, our spirits were never daunted. We must congratulate Bovell who broke the long standing hundred yards record, and also Pieters, Thompson, Richards and Harmon for their exceptional performances.

In the Elocution Competition, though we ended up third we showed that “A ” House made gentlemen of little boys and that we have the temperament to be able to cope with almost everything. As usual one of our competitors Adams gave a masterful performance.

In the Debating competition we were eliminated in the first round, but we lost fighting.

This year also terminated the services of Mr. Insanally and Mr. Chin -Sam as house masters of Percival House. On behalf of Percival House I thank them for all that they have done for us and may they be successful in all their future endeavours.

Raleigh House has had quite a good year. Although there was quite often a sad lack of cooperation, we did well academically as well as in the field. If all the boys pull their weight next year, the House will definitely excel in all the activities.

Our cricket team, under the leadership of F. S. Massiah, played their way well through the Cricket Competition. By beating Weston, Austin, Woolley and Moulder Houses, we reached the finals and came up against Nobbs, the other finalist. Unfortunately our match with Nobbs was drawn because of rain. We had bowled out Nobbs for only 131 runs and our team had scored 47 runs for one when the rain came down. It kept on falling and the match had to be abandoned.

Eventually, we were declared joint winners of the Competition along with Nobbs House. Good individual performances were turned in by Morris, Massiah, Persaud, Brazilio and Langevine and I think the whole team should be congratulated. Next year, Raleigh House should be able to win this competition outright.

In Athletics, the House did not fare too badly. We came fifth in the Standard Points Competition and, on Sports Day, we placed fourth. I think we could have won the Standard Points Shield quite easily if more of the senior boys had turned up to earn Standard Points for the House. The bulk o f the Points was earned by boys of the Lower School and they must be praised. Valz of the third form should especially be credited for his performance in earning quite a few Standard Points and also for winning the House Cup. Alleyne, the House Athletic captain, Massiah and Plummer should also be mentioned for their fine performances.

The House placed fifth in the Work Competition. This was quite an improvement on the House’s usual place at the bottom. The boys should be credited for this. They should try to keep it up and try to place first next year.

The Table Tennis Competition came off and we emerged the winner. We won this competition by beating Durban Hoiise three games to two. Blenman, Alleyne and Massiah performed well for the House in this competition and, as they will still be here next year, I can see the House winning this competition again.

“B” House has also excelled in another field. C. W. Taylor of the Upper Sixth was chosen to attend West Point, one of the world’s, leading military academy. He is the first Guyanese to attend the academy. Taylor was a prominent member of the House and all of us wish him the best of luck.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the masters and the prefects of the House for aiding in the smooth running of the House. On behalf of the boys who are leaving school I would like to wish “B” House a fond “Good luck5’ in all its future endeavours.

Though the past school year has been crowned with no resounding victory for Austin House, yet our achievements in almost everything were noble enough to keep us among those houses worthy of mention.

When Mr. Lowe, our former House-Master, left us to go on leave towards the end of the July Term (1968), Mr. Persico was made Acting House - Master and to assist Mr. Robinson as deputy, came Mr. Mohatnmadeen who has joined the staff of Q. C. We trust that Mr. Mohammadeen will enjoy his stay with the House.

Our performance in the House Cricket Competition this year was fair. Wea played four matches, won one, drew one and lost two. Even though, on paper, we possessed some of the best players in the school, when we got on the field our display spoke to the contrary. Our captain, Cheddie, as well as Morrison, Hales and newcomer Adams must be singled out here for due praise.

We, of Austin House have always been voicing our intention o f having the best House Party in the School and it is indeed heartening to note that this year we succeeded. Our House Party, thanks to the unstinted co - operation of our House Masters and our own boys, was easily the best this year.

The Easter Term was highlighted mainly by the Annual Athletic Sports and it is perhaps in this field that our House excelled most, even though we did not win the Championship Shield. After being beaten for several years into second place, Percival House snatched victory from us, displaying fine team spirit and unity.

Austin won the Championship in 1964, 65,66, 67, 68 and it is only too fitting that some other House be allowed to keep the Shield now. Our Junior, Senior and 4 by 440 relay teams were successful on Sports Day and special mention must be made of Young, Chung, Seaton and Saul, who were very contributive in this sphere. Our Tug - o - War team was third and we placed second in the Medley Relay. Our Head of House won the Senior Championship, and it is interesting to note that over the past five years Austin House has won this division four times. Other winners were Went, Lewis and Morrison. Our sterling performances were turned in this year by A. R. Morrison, Hales, Akai, Sheperd (Jnr.) and Cheddie. The House joins in congratulating these able young men.

In the House Elocution Contest we took part but we were not quite successful.

In the August Term, the House Debating Competition was run off. Our team of Robertson, K. Persaud and Clarke won our first match against Pilgrim House in fine style. We were not successful in the other matches.

Up to the time of writing, neither the Table Tennis, Football nor Hockey Competitions were run off.

This year our performance in the work competition left much to be desired.

Although our House was blessed with a few outstanding students, yet we were unable to get higher than seventh position throughout the year, primarily because a few members consistently returned negative points. \

Perhaps my report would be a bit incomplete, if I did not mention a few other achievements that our boys recorded. Our Cricket Captain, Cheddie, was selected during the Easter Holidays to represent the country’s Under 20 Cricket Team that took part in the B. A. T. Tourney. Indeed it is heartening to note that this was the second occasion on which he represented Guyana. Best of luck in the future lad!

Finally, towards the middle of the August Term, five boys from the House were appointed acting - School Prefects, while the ‘A’ Level students were on leave.

They are Hales, Keiimann, Ramson, London and Edgehill.

This is the end of yet another school year. It is a time for reflection and resolution, and I think that we have more to reflect on than to resolve.

During the past year Durban House managed to maintain its standards in the school in both academic and extra - curricular activities and this was because we were able to work together as a team for the benefit of the House.

The year began during the Christmas Term, and it was uneventful except for the annual party. The party was quite a memorable affair in that it was held in the auditorium. At first we baulked at the idea of a party in the auditorium but we set to with a will and had quite a successful evening.

In the cricket competition we placed third and this was mainly due to the efforts of Hansen (snr.), Bradshaw, Akbar andPhillips. For ourposition in Football we must thank Phillips (capt.), Hugh and Gomes. From the beginning of the year, Phillips set the pace and the others followed. This was the pattern for the year and Phillips was the dominant figure. In Athletics we tried. Our team consisted mainly of Phillips’ Smith, Eytle and James, Philips walking away with many prizes and emerging House Champion in the process. As usual we won the Tug - O - War competition with some magnificent pulls. In the Elocution Competition, a rather unsuccessful field in the past, we placed second and we must congratulate Sears and James for this.

Our academic achievements were commendable if not excellent. Our position in the second place has become stagnant and it is now time for us to move up to first place. Hansen, our Deputy House Captain, was granted a scholarship and awarded a place in the M. I. T. This was no mean achievement sinte the M. LT. is considered to be the foremost institute of engineering in the world. ) would like to congratulate him and to wish him greater success in the future. Our 5th. and 6th. formers sat the G. C. E. ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels examinations and I have no doubts that when the results are published, we wall have additional reasons for congra ulations.

W I L K I N S O N The pest school year has been one of little success for Pilgrim house. This was due mainly to a lack of house spirit exhibited by most members of the house.

At the beginning of the school year we welcomed Mr. Maloney as our Assistant house master. During the school year, he ably assisted our two friendly and hardworking house masters.

In the Cricket Competition held during the Christmas Term, our team had a fair measure of success. Our team lost most of their matches because of a lack of team spirit and determination. Despite some brilliant batting by D. Wallace and some fine pace bowling throughout the competition by Jervis, the cricket team had nothing to boast about.

Because of willing cooperation and hard work by the senior members of the house, we had quite a successful house party. Our decoration was superb, and the younger members of the house had an enjoyable evening.

Despite some fine performances by our Captain, Wooiford who won the 880 yards on Sports Day, the house finished at the bottom of the table in Athletics.

This was, again due to a lack of cooperation among the members of the house.

In Table Tennis, our young team was knocked out in the first round.

Nevertheless, J. Peroune was runner - up in the Junior Table Tennis Competition.

Hard practice by these yotngsters can help us to reach the top again in the future.

Our Elocution Team showed to the rest of the house what was meant by cooperation and team spirit. In the House Competition, after hard practice, our team finished fourth. Peroune was second in the Junior Division, in the Debating Competition we lost narrowly to “C” House. Better luck next year!

In the Work Competition our performance leaves much to be desired. The house could only better its present position, if each member of the house seeks to work harder. Work harder to bring praise to yourself, your house and your school.

To those members of the House who return next year, good luck! Use this Chinese Adage as your motto during the coming school year: “Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it. To cross the threshold is not difficult and mastery is possible provided one sets one’s mind to the task and is good at learning.

At the beginning of the 1968-69 school year Weston lost the services of its veteran housemaster Mr. Yhap, who was then appointed deputy headmaster. Weston congratulates Mr. Yhap who has since been appointed headmaster. Mr. Mangal was promoted Housemaster.

Weston welcomed Messrs O. Locke and A. Aaron as assistant housemasters, the latter replacing fellow Guyana Scholar O. Roach, who said goodbye to Weston after one year with us.

Weston started the year promisingly with good ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level results, especially by Bernard, Maloney and Lali. Weston also achieved the distinction of providing the school with both the Head and Deputy Head Prefects, the only senior prefect R. Lall and two more school prefects M. Marks and J. Alii.

The good performances of the majority of Westonians in the work competition were partially annulled by poor returns from the remaining few, with the result that Weston did not win the Shield.

If these few only make a determined effort to contribute something positive to the House Weston will rise to where it belongs.

The cooperation between members of the House enabled Weston to hold its own in the various competitions. Rambihar, Barran ard Bernard took the House to the semi-finals in the Debating Competition. In cricket we were edged into second position in our division. Outstanding performers were AHi, D. Persaud and Gadwah. In the junior competition Walcott led his team to victory in the single match played. We finished half way up the table in athletics despite vociferous encouragement to the last minute. Our House champion was Daniels. Weston won the Elocution contest with J. La Roseand R. Rai taking first prizes in senior and junior divisions respectively.

At our last House Assembly J. La Rose was awarded the House Cup (Irwin Cup). School colours were awarded to D. Persaud for volleyball.

Weston has had a good year, but with renewed dedication by each Westonian to make a positive contribution in whatever his endeavours, Weston will have a better year yet.

From all of us leaving Weston, Good Luck. And Westonians, give us further cause to be proud of our House and our Motto “IDEM IN ' LUDIS AC IN STUDI1S; SEMPER EXCELLENS4’.

When the academic year 68’-69’ began, we welcomed to our noble gathering, Mr. Fields who took the piace of Mr. Alii as an assistant House - Master. Here’s hoping that he will enjoy his stay with Moulder House.

During this school year the spirit of cooperation was certainly present in the minds of “G” House boys and this inevitably resulted in a greater measure of success in House activities than before. In the cricket competition we survived the opening rounds but eventually our young team was defeated by the better experienced teams. However we must gain consolation from the fact that the much - rated Woodey House Team suffered defeat at the hands of our young and inexperienced team.

In Athletics, Moulder House, who started out as the underdogs, ended up sharing Sports Day honours with the winners. In this field, the cooperation of t i i e boys resulted in our resounding success. In the Standard Points Competition we were pipped by Percival House into second place, but even Austin House, with her abundance of athletic talent could not stem the might of Moulder.

Special mention must be made of the part played by Fox who emerged as Under 15 Champion, R. Massay, White and Phillips.

The benefits of the House spirit were shown in our House party. Many of our members braved the rain to help decorate the dining hall for this occasion. Moulder house is small and so we could not afford expensive menus like our wealthier counterparts, but everyone had enough to eat.

In the work competition, we are once again, barely keeping our heads above water. I sincerely hope that some of our members would join the bunsen burner club and restore Moulder to the position where she rightfully belongsat the top. In the House Debating Competition and the Elocution Competition, we were unfortunate in that our members gifted in this field were preparing for their examinations, thus our performance in these fields w7as not creditable. Up to the lime of writing, the Football competition has not yet been played off but we expect it to be played soon.

Thus, one can safely say that Moulder House is one rung higher on the ladder, but we still have a long way to tue top. But even Rome was not built in a day.

The past school year has been a most uneventful one for Woolley House.

There has been little achievement at which we can look back proudly apart from an increasing realisation that every member of the House is an asset and this awareness has gone hand in hand with the fostering of a more embracing House spirit.

We began the school year in the absence of our House Master but the two Assistant House Masters did a good job in the organisation of House Affairs.

During this term the House Cricket Competition was played off and once again we made a heartening display in the first round, winning convincingly, but unfortunately we could not maintain such performances and lost every other match. Our House party at the end of the term was held in the worst possible environment, — the Art Room that is, if the Woodwork Shop can be disregarded, but several members made sterling contribution towards making the affair a success. Special mention must bemade of young “Friar” De Freitas.

At the beginning of the Easter Term we welcomed back our House Master and he has continued to be a ‘Rock of Ages’ to the House, helping its members in every possible way. Our performance in the Athletic Competition deteriorated, a fact mainly due to injury of our top athletes, an occurrence which ended our dreams of reaching the top of the table. Our House captain was unfortunately ill but most members of the House were able to pull their weight and make some effort towards increasing the point standing of the House; this is encouraging even though we ended up sixth on the Standard Points Table. On Sports Day we improved our position by ending up fifth. Everyone expected us to run away with the Relay for another year* but disappointingly we only placed third in the Senior Relay.

The August Term has also witnessed a reversal of past years’ achievements.

Last year we were first in the House Elocution Competition: this year we were sixth. In the House Debating Competition, a revival after many years of inactivity, we won our first round debate, overwhelming our opponents, Percival House. Our team of Ghose, Me Allister and Singh R. opposed the topic ‘The British Invasion of Anguilla was justified’.

We have had no games in the last term though the House Football and Table-Tennis and the House Junior Cricket Competition are to be run off. We are expected to retain the House Football Trophy.

The coming school year must be one of speculation. Can we improve our performance in sport? Can we consolidate our all round position as a house and enable the House spirit to increase and embrace the school?

Can we end the somewhat recurring and expected win of Nobbs House in the work competition?

These are the questions which face my fellow members of Woolley House. It has been done in the past by other hoqses audit can be done in the future by you.

The past year has not been a fruitful one for Cunningham House, but there has been an improvement in the overall performance on that of 1967-68.

On looking back at the last few years, our performance in the Cricket Competition was quite creditable. We did not boast a side containingmany school players, but we could have done tetter, had we played as a team and not as individuals. We collected pur only points from “A” House, in what proved to be the highest scoring match of the competition. Thanks must go toC. Singh (Capt), Venner (jnr.), Sue-Chu, for batting, and Singh and Venner (snr.) for bowling.

The Xmas term was closed off with the best House Party for quite a few years.

The success of this occasion was due to the splendid cooperation shown by all, especially the House Prefects, who felt that a bumper party would be a boost for our ebbing House Spirit.

But this was not to be so, in our performance in Athletics — eighth in the Standard Points, and ninth on Sport’s Day. Too much was asked of Rodney, our captain, and he could not give of his best. A word of praise for the three Iton brothers, newcomers to the House (one of whom became House Champion) for their performances on Sport’s Day. This deteriorating state of affairs continued into the August Term, despite the exhortations of our House Masters. Due to non-cooperation from members, we were unable to field a team in the Elocution Competition, but we express special thanks to N. Singh (Capt.), Dasrat Persaud and young Sivlall, for their efforts, in their respective divisions.

In the Debating Competition, we won bur way to the finals but lost it to “H” House. It was a close decision and all that can be said is that we were unlucky not to win the judges’ favour. To N. Singh (Capt.), Rodney, Trueman and King, I say, “Well done and better luck next year.”

On the academic side we improved on our performance of 1967-68. At the time of writing, I understand we are in a creditable sixth position. ‘The greatest room in the world is the room for improvement’, said our former Housemaster, the late Mr. E. R. Burrowes. We can win the Work Shield, which we won twice in the past. The House congratulates Chaitram Singh, Deputy Head of House who won a scholarship to West Point, being one of the first two Guyanese to be admitted to such a noble institution. We wish him continued success in the future.

Cunningham House has the potential to accomplish great things, despite what the rest of the school may think. This potential can only be realised if the members recultivate a strong, genuine, lasting House Spirit, which, at present, is sadly lacking.

In leaving I hope ail Cunninghamites will remember these whenever the time for participation in any school activity arises. *Tis better to have fought and lost, than never to The best of lu^k to ‘K’ House in the future.

D uring the d a y s of un certain ty, wTe can be sure there will be trem endous changes in alm ost every phase of life p olitical, economic and social.

A d m itted ly, the y e a r 2000 is a lo n g tim e in com ing. T h e ordinary man in the street does not stop to think w hat the state of the world w ill be like in this far off era. H e say s, he makes it a point not to w orry about even ts in th is distan t future. It is futile, he says, u ca u se there is n othing to show th at th e vast cip her w ill com e out as predicted - and th a t m ay com plicate in itters further. In addition , m editating about th e fate of the w orld in th e fu tu r e is not his jo b , b ut that of world leaders, and, a n y w ay , he m ay not be here then, so he w ill n ot becloud his life, vVhic 1 “ is for living'", w ith thoughts abou t m an's fu tu re.

B ut can you take this ty p ica l working class outlook, w hich is essentially an escap ist’s view, about the world and its future? W e are all members of th is v a st com m unity t h a t is th e world a i d we are all responsible for e v e ry th in g th a t has happened, o r is happening around us.

W h a t ’s more, each one of us, even though we m ay n o trea lise it,ca n con tribute to so lv in g the w orld 's problem s. A fte r all, throu gh the ages, it has been the id ea o f one m an th a t has revolutionised the world in m any aspects, and brought epic occuiences in m an's m arch to be “ better o ff" according to his own ideas. T h is is clearly seen, if traces are m ade, in researches in P h ysics, Chem ical in vestigations, and th e e xte n sive exp erim en tal w ork done on natural and human B iology th a t reached unprecedented heights in the scientific and industrial revolutions.

H as the pace been too rapid? U ndoubtedly it is a debatable issue. W here w ill it lead as - w hat do we hope to gain - where w ill be our n ex t stop?

W ith the exhaustion of unexplored lands, m an has undertaken, in a quest t© satisfy his apparently insatiable ap p etite fo r adventure, to d elve into the m ysteries of other planets. The feats accom plished in outer space are beyond the com prehension o f some o f us, p etty m ortals.

V e ry soon, b y 2000 caterin g a flig h t to th e M oon or Mars w ill be as com m onplace as tra vellin g to London for a w eek's vacation .

Sociologists h ave predicted th a t b y 2000 w om en w ill have in vad ed a ll the lanes labelled “ exclu sively m en" and the ©nly difference between the sexes, it is thought, will be biological in nature. Our more afflu en t societies w ill h ave such a v a st store of m on ey, th a t people would only work if they w an t t&. Com puters and various electron ic devices, in a fa r more advanced stage than those n ow in use, will enable those who do not w ant to w ork, to devote their tim e to non - salaried pursuits. Scientific m ethods to be developed, will remove the drudgery from d aily life in kitchen, factory, field and o ffice.

People with spiritual problem s w ill dial their church for the answers, and preachers will tell their congregations “ d a ta is the servant of G o d ." There will be, b y 2000, no lines of demarcation for youths and elders, in discussions of issues. E a ch person will b ean individual,respected and looked upon as a person, and not as a big man or mere boy. Transplantation centres, com plete w ith com puters to coordinate at high speeds, possible organs donors w ith recipients, will be as natural as breathing. In conjunction, one will fn rch ase one’s p la sticliv e r, kidn ey or arm , and g ro w them in place of dam aged and worn o u t p arts.

Sounds like a fligh t of fan tasy? H ard ly! T a le a quiet appraisal of w orld situation t© establish the true running to predicted form. Undoubtedly glamorous picture has been painted, all lush pastures and gently rippling rivers w ith hu m an ity a ll aglow w ith contentm ent,

B u t b y a curious paradox, in view of world events, thin gs m ay not turn o u t as cherrylike and rosy as exp ected . O ur space age prophets, w ith their vision s of merchandised w orld, h ave become too e csta ctic too fast. T h e y have becom e enticed into a nearly fa ta l illusion th a t the skills in science and technology, w ill brin g to us, like a fairy god - mother, wondrous gifts from an unfailing store, th e y have taken it for granted, th a t m oney w ill give everyth in g.

W ith e v e ry tic k of the clock, thousands of humans invade the w orld. T h ey join in the m illing crowd, the members of which, tr y to eke out a livin g from the lim ited resources of the world. T h e ir prim ary purpose is to live, and hew m a n y fail!; how m any com e and go in a week, a month, a year! H alf of th e w orld's population is sta rv in g , and stea d ily, the tid a l wave th a t is hum anity, comes rushing on.

Scientists w ill hot be able to stem th is enveloping tide o f hu n gry hum anity, in the n ext th irty years, even though th ey come w ith startlin g predictions th a t new sources o f food supply w ill be found. B u t where w ill th e y be found? T h e lands of th e world h ave to serve a dual purpose - housing people and feeding them . Indeed some lands, even after the application of the most m odern fertilizers, have refused to app reciably support the growth o f food crops.

Some argue th a t even today, one can miss a m eal and lose nothing for one can swallow a tablet or tw o and g e t all one's necessary calories. W h o knows, by 2000 we m ay be im unending queues to receive our w eekly ration in a tw o pint bottle, w ith orders t© tak e ten tablespoonfuls tw ice d a ily — the food con sistin g of a m ix tu re of some y e t to be discovered algae and organic compound, w ith a few peanuts and a slice of orange for desert. B u t w ill we be able to keep hunger a t b a y by these means? A nd if we fail, w hat w ill th e upshot be?

H u n gry men have no scruples. T h e y stop a t nothing, snd can be as unthinking as Robots and as ferocious as maddened elephants. W hole nations w ill sell their dignity, th eir in d ivid u a lity , their v e ry freedom , fo r food. There is sim ply no substitute.

Man h a s becom e so fertile th a t the earth can scarcely contain him . Diseases -— cancer, m alaria and a legion of others, co n tin u a lly plague man, and scien tists are no n earer a solution than are we for a M artian landing.

W ith all th e fru stra tio n s and dissappoihtm ents to be faced, m illions —- n ay billions o f men are a t w ar w ith th e w orld. T h e y nnrture their griefs, and period ically, unable to bear the stress and tensions of d a ily livin g in an oppresive society, unleash the flood gates of their passions a rd becom e man^ac?s; th e y »go beserk and m ow down w hole gatherin gs ©f people w ith a subm achine gun o r other such d e a d ly w eapon.

A s cities spread in m onstrous fashion, th e problem o f refuse, so in heren t in urban life, a tta in s th e size of an insoluble problem . C aibon dioxide and all the host o f air born e industrial wastes are p oison ing fresh w ater and fouling the atm osphere. How can people close their , minds to the fa ct th a t m uch of the w ater flow in g fro m their kitchen taps h ave already passed throu gh oth er people's drains? A ir pollution co n stitu tes a serious hazard to health. A tm osphere p ollu tion has been found to lower resistan ce to disease, to reduce v it a lity and to increase sickness. R e la tiv e ly low levels of air pollution m a y b e in vo lved , a group of doctors said, in the developm ent of chronic degenerative diseases, including skin and lung cancer, h e a rt and vascular disorders and ch ro n ic bronchitis. The recen tly con cluded U N E S C O Conference on health problem s reported th a t m an emerged on this spaceship, E arth, and is b io lo g ica lly bound to it for ever. T heir ad vice was th a t either m an keeps th e space-ship h ealth y, or he dies w ith it.

T o add to th e m isty, grey, and blizzard — swept dawn o f the 2000 is the threat cf nuclear war. T h e aspiration of all th e n ations of the world, is to be the most powerful m ilitary body. In the w ake of all the p up py talk, b y the great nations, of preventing a build up of nuclear power, A m erica has plans of. buildin g an anti ballistic' missile system “ to protect its citizens” from possible nuclear a tta ck , and is asking Canada to p e ira it the firin g of missiles over th a t co u n try in c a s e of a tta ck . Tn® Chinese use a ll availab le fu n ds for the production of nuclear war m aterials a n d th eir neighbours th e R ussians, are b y no means la ggin g behind in this arm s race.

F ew of us risk to th in k w h at th e 2000 w ill bring to us — eith er because we are unw illing to draw conclusions, which of necessity m ust be m orbid, or because we ju st ca n ’t thin k w h at it w ill be like. I t defies a ll a ttem p ts, b y us, a t p uttin g it into proper p erspective. S till others look to scien tists and to m oney to provide the panacea lor w jr ld viruses, and so have vision s of the 2000 as a rollicking, fro llickin g D is n e y —* lan d.

B u t it is tim e we ponder on th e fu tu r e — tune we ask questions and h ave th e gum ption to do w h a t our answers tell us to do, for respon sibility for th e continued presence of m an on earth is not o f scien tists and tech nologists alone but of all men. W orld events w ill affect e ach person, w hether he be here or on any o th er planet.

The d em ocratic m achine is so constructed th a t it can deal quite ad eq u ately w ith the problem s of an Anguilla. B ritain is the arbiter in a n y quarrel am ong members of the three island grouping. H er decision to invade the island was based on the pleas oi Mr. Bradshaw the Federal P rem ier and other W est Indian Prim e M inisters for action, and a belief th a t Mr. W ebster was neither the rep resen tative of a m a jo rity nor was he actin g con stitutionally.

In the m eantim e let this be un equivocally clear that in the operation against A nguil ; no misery or distress was caused and th a t lends solidarity to m y claim th a t B ritain was absolutely justified in invading A nguilla.

This long and p ro tra cted w ar can be traced to the Second W orld W ar. In 1940, th e N azis in flicte d a hum iliating d efeat on F ran ce. A s a result, the V ic h y Governm ent of France was unable to exercise any control over her colonies. A lso, Japan a t th e same tim e w as extendin g her Asian Em pire. So she occup ied Indo-China.

It w as under this rule th a t Dr. Ho Chi Minh, a V ietn am ese in tellectu a l, set up the V ie t Min h, a p ara-m ilita ry force to expel the Japanese. B u t in 1945, the Japanese were expelled from Indo-China. T he French then re-occupied the country and m ade overtures to the V iet Minh. B u t at the same tim e th e y ordered the V ietn am ese population to leave H aiphong, th e m ajor V ietnam ese port. T h is was im possible in th e tim e a ljcw td hours) and the French then wiped o u t the local population o f Haiphong.

W ith this, th e V iet Min h were ordered to m ake atta ck s on all French forces in the co u n try . B u t from 1947-1953 the b a ttle was an up and down affair.

It was then th at G eneral Giap, the Vietnam ese commander made threaten in g m ovem ents against the French fortress, Bien Dien Phu. T he French fell for the trap and reinforced th is fortress. A fte r a long seige b y the V ie t M inh, o ver 16,000 of the elite colonial troops of the French A rm y were killed o r captured. W ith th is defeat, the French abandoned V ietn am and Dr. Ho set up an independent D em ocratic R ep u b lic of Vietnam in the N orth.

I t was then th a t the South Vietnam ese com m unists started a guerilla w ar against the governm ent. D iem asked A m erica for aid and th ey sent in “ M ilitary advisers” . The position of th e South's governm ent stead ily deteriorated and A m erica continued to pour in aid. A s a result, in A p ril 1969. A m erica had over 500,000 troops, tw o-fifths o f her a c tiv e airforce and a large p a rt of her n av y in a ctio n . Com bined w ith this, she has the represen tative troops of A u stralia, T hailan d, K orea and N ew Z ealand . T h e y are facing app roxim ately 250,000 V ietco n g and N o rth Vietnam ese; T he w ar took a turn in 1968 when the V ie t Cong launched a T e t offen sive. T h is offensive w as a stunning success as the liberation forces scoitcl m any m ilitary and psychological victories. T h e y even occupied the fortress-em bassy of the A m erican s in Saigon.

A s a result. President Johnson called off his n aval and aerial bom bardm ent of N orth V ietn am . T h is w as followed b y th e opening of peace talk s in P a n s. I h t s e ta lk s h a \t made no real progress and are only a forum for proposals and counter-proposals from th e tw o Sides.

B u t to those who th in k th a t the A m ericans can in flict such a defeat on the V ietcon g as to force them to surrender, I would like to use a quotation from G eneral G aip —- “ If your enemy is scattered it loses strength; I f it is concentrated it loses ground” . Such is the situ atio n m a gueirilla war. Such is it in V ietn am to d ay.

T onight, M ac’s clum sy effo rts a t being polite would be dem onstrated more often than ever before; tonight, her sm elly smile would decorate her im becilic face, as a t no other tim e it had done; for tonight is R ipper M a rk ’s “ um pteenth” b irth d a y (where th e num erical equ ivalen t of “ um p” co u ld n e t Le oitcreetly shared for fear o f em barassm ent to our dear Ripper). “ M erry B irth n ig h t darling!” M ac was again chorusing as our R ip p in g Romeo stood on his bridge, transfixed b y M ac’s unsurpassed b eau ty. R ip p er loved Mac, and be was very proud of her. H e had on occasions described her as “ the jew el of m y life ” or “ m y m ost prized possession” or in the poem th a t he had w ritten as “ m y life, m y soul, m y a ll”,. T h a t is w h y he had le ft the rest o f the p a rty upstairs, and had stolen a w a y to enjoy a few moments of sweet solace w ith the one he held so dear.

A round bright morn and numerous tin k lin g stars had m ade th a t night in to a large Christm as — a n atu ral Christm as, free from the im perfection of hum an hand.

This w as one o f those n ights when the jo y of livin g was fu lly realised, when a ll glum eares could be w ashed aw ay; above all, it w as the n ight m ost conducive to rom ance — if ever there w as one. R ip p er determ ined to m ake m axim um use of th is n ight and he soon began to w hisper m agic w ords in M ac’s large ears, though she was co n stan tly yellin g: “ T alk h arda nuh m an!” R ip p er was saying: “ I f D ood were here, he w ould h a ve said ‘Tuna est p u lch ra’ ” . O f course M ac, whose scholastic c a ite i hacl b ten a l r r p t l y ended in B ig A B C in a school a t the ‘B a y of th e T ig e r,’ could n ot h ave been able to know w hat “ D o o d would have said if he were h e re .” She, how ever, sm iled gleefully (showing her immense pride in her own ignorance) and R ipper tran slated D ood’s sentence, and proceeded to exp lain the in tricacies of L atin G ram m ar to an u n ch allen gin g Mac. The few m om ents of sw eet so lace having been th u s com pleted, R ip p er w as heading b a ck to the re st o f th e p arty, when, passing the hibiscus green ery near the

bridge, he heard a slight rustle* D isp layin g ty p ica l R y a n ia n A th letic prowess, he was soon a safe distan ce aw ay, leavin g th e stronger sex to face w hatever music there m ight be M ac pounced on the eavesdropper, and five blows later, she w as holding a tim id m ale in her right hand. A fter ca refu lly ascertainin g in whose favour the tide of b a ttle was washing, R ipper confidently and heroically swaggered to the queer pair. Suddenly he stopped and stared a t the alien. “ D an nyl D anny, w hat yu h doing hey? he asked. “ Ah lass me p e a .” choked D anny. “ Loss yu h what? Y o u mean yuh loss yuh pen eleven o ’clock tonight? Come, Com e D an ny, ah know th a t you and Siali a n d T heo all th in k ah stupid, but ah un suh stu p id . You mean to tell me - me R ip p er M ark, th a t yuh lass yuh pen a t this hour.

L.ook Danny, looks are decieving, ah look stupid b u t,*,_... “ Y o u look sm art, ah mean yo u s m a r f'D a n n y begged, “ but a lass m e pen since 6 .j o ’ \ R ip p er burst out angrily. “ Wha* the ass you been doing here 6.30” ? O f aljl th e pass -eye, R ip p er th o u g h t, this scam p D an ny cam e and disturbed his in tim ate courtsh ip, then now D anny had the cheek to tell him th a t he w as here since 6 . 3o and a b o v e all, he exp ected R ip p er to believe the fan tastic sto ry o f th e pen. O f all th e no m a tte r.

M ac was w aiting for the signal. She u su ally allow ed R ipper to handle the diplom atic aspect of things, while she to o k more to the physical. She was becom ing bored, b u t fin a lly the signal cam e. M ac fired th e barrage of Clay-like punches to D an ny's abdom en and w ith one toss, deposited him back to his hibiscus w atch-tow er.

D an n y's y ap s and yells had not gone unheard. I t was a lo n g tim e since th e la st of the buns (more suitable for the base o f some ed ifice th an fcr hu m an consum ption) was deposited either through the m outh or for th e m ost p art th rou gh th e w indow.

R a d io Surinam liad, some tim e ago ended its program m e o f 'T o p T w e n ty ’. T he guests were p atien tly w aiting for the clim ax w hich D a n n y ’s sounds offered th em . H eaded b y Skeley, th e y rushed thourgh the house, n ot caring about th e frailer elem ents of furniture w ith w hich they cam e in to contact; down the dancing sta irca se , and into the y ard .

Skeley rescued a groaning D an ny from the greed y hibiscus thorns and helped him to his fee t. “ W hoy happen,

bo y?” S k eley asked.

D an n y filled with anger and passion pointed a shaky han d a t M ac, and stam m ered out a brief sentence. M ac to o k one step forw ard, and D an ny four backw ards. “ Y o u overgrow n chim p , d irty bully! A nd yo u fine rat, standing up and seeing th a t ....thathid eous P olyphem us beat up D an ny boy! shouted Skeley, addressing M ac a t first then Ripper.

R ipper did not m ind being addressed as a “ fine ra t" , b u t w hat Sk eley said about M ac wasn’t e » actly com p lim en tary and no one could h a ve endured the m ental agony th a t Ripper was experiencing then.

R ipper sailed through the air, knocking th e surprised Skeley off his feet.

W ith a superhuman effort, R ip p er m anaged to get on top of S k eley and he w ild ly lashed out a t the ju st as bo n y m ediator with his sm all fists. B u t it did n ot tak e long for R ip p e r’s victorious m om ents to com e to an end.

Skeley had grown under th e old jungle m axim o f “ Survival o f the fitte s t’ ’ .

A lth o u gh he was not e x a c tly th e fitte st a t hom e, he w as not the w eakest, and he did m anage to eat, m uch to the detrim ent o f the minors in his fam ily. W ith an experienced flip therefore, he w as soon sittin g on to p of poor R ipper; and associating th is b a ttle w ith food, S k eley soon had R ip p er sprawled groaning on th e ground.

M ac had also developed her figh tin g a b ility through the sam e process as Skeley, b u t she was qu ite unwilling to m atch her strength w ith Skeley's. Instead, she fell b y Ripper, rubbing his face then slapping it, then rubbing it again. E v e ry o n e trooped p ast the two ©f them and the la st to go was D an oy - sm iling the sw eetest smile ever.

The strong h u sk y voice ceased outside the door. The door opened slo w ly, d ram a tically , and in strode a quiet, handscn.t and w ell spoken y o u th . H e gracefu lly con fronted th e fo rm w ith th e bare, sh arp point of an im agin ary ra p ier, and a fte r a gloriou s d isp la y of skill w ith cape and sword, re tire d adm ist a frenzy of applause.

Someone cracked a jo ke. M ac looked up fro m his seat and shook his head, "F ie , Fie, th e ignorance of m an ". He flipped open his w allet, extra cted a photo and le t out a breath o f in fin ite ecstasy.

"O h thou sw eetest a n g e l" - quoted our poet lau reate, if thine ru b y lips could o n ly sp ea k ". T he b rayin g of a donkey in terrup ted the silence. Som eone cried: "M a c , She speaks! She sp eaks!"

M ac p eevish ly retorted, "C ease to exist, th o u co w ard ly v illa in ” .

The ringing ©f th e b e ll saw em ptyin g classroom s but M ac rem ained absorbed an aura of hap pin ess surrounding h is p oetic brew . H e pulled out a lov6 le tte r in morse code and started reading — dot, dash, dot, dot, d ash.

I h ave read thee five tim es, h a s t thou sp o k en truly? " M y d arlin g Chris, th is v e ry w eek-end, you and I shall go to the cin em a".

Next period saw M ac try in g to sell som e poems to ra ise funds fo r this noble ven tu re.

S a tu rd a y dawned b rig h t and clear. M ac awoke a t four, and w ent for his usual ride round th e block in his p yjam as. H is m uscu lar arms ten sed , and m assive thigh s flashin g up and dow n as he co m p leted his u su al fifty -fo u r laps. Then he cruised hom ewards and in to the bath — yes B A T H — for to d a y M ac was possessed b y a zest of unknown powers. H e ran errands, bathed three tim es and a ctu a lly studied so cial science.

A fter lunch Mac retired w ith his m outh organ and pen, and wrote poetry aad p la y e d furio u sly. T hen his harm on ica m usic w afted m elodiously and blended w ith the sweet, s o ft sounds of n ature, " D -D a y has co m e ", cried M ac g la n cin g apprehensively a t th e c lo ck , "o n ly three more hours to p a ra d is e ". " O h tim e, w h y d ost th y w inged ch ario t f ly so slow ?”

Mac checked and rechecked th e cinem a colum n in th e newspaper; he s h a v e d and reshaved, powdered and repowdered, splashed a liberal dose of cologne on his n e a tly pressed garm ent and sat down to brush up on his morse co d e.

H is yearning h eart le a p t w ild ly a t the sound o f th e rin gin g phone. H e jum ped t o his feet, rushed w ild ly to his desk, and snatched u p the phone; he sighed s o ftly and rom antically through the m outhpiece.

"Oh! Chris, Chi is, m y long lost lo v e " . ‘ ‘W o t’s th a t? ", growled a v o ice at the other end. " I am the tailor and I w ant to find out when yo u going to p ay me for them six black pants yo u ordered for n ex t term ” .

Mac sat down disconsolately and w aited p atie n tly for th e hands of the clock to move to four. The phone rang again and Mac jum ped up aga in b ut ca u tio u sly th is time. " H e llo , it's me C h ris” . "‘ O h, my d a rlin g, is it really yo u ?", M ac was engulfed in a torren t ©f em etion. H is h e art beat w ild ly a ga in st his m a n ly ch est, and his le a d swam w ith gen tle un dulation s.

C 's auditorium a t th e end o f th is school y e a r . “ B rother Jero’ ' an A frican p la y b y W o ia G oijunka was an exam ple, in its production o f th e re c e n t dram atic upsurge in th e app eal 11 A frican lite ra tu re to o a> . In th is com edy the a u th o r uses D ram a to s la te h y p o critica l religions in an open w a y . T h e story w as of a cunning b e ach prophet of A fr ic a who m anages to ch e a t a r d deceive everyone b y p reten ding to be a d evo u t and inspired Christian.

T h e P ro d u cer and lea d in g a c to r G a v in C a le b p o rtra y ed “ B ro th e r Jero*' to a n icety and seem ed to be n a tu ra lly livin g th e p a rt of th e cunning e g o tistic prophet.

H is gestures and elocu tion were both good as e sp ecially w as his success in gaining c o n ta c t w ith the audience.

H is p o rtra y a l w as seconded b y th a t o f Terrence B o stw ick as B ro th er Chum e a believer in the prophet who w as deceived and cheated b y him and th row n into prison a fte r he realised th is.

B o stw ick 's grea t d ifficu lty it seem ed, w as in m akin g his language an d tone sound like th a t of a crude labourer.

T he crow d w as not so good for the m em bers seem ed to find d ifficu lty in a ctin g as though “ C a u g h t ia the Spirit of J a v a ” . “ T he D o cto r in S p ite o f H im self” was a F re n ch p la y b y M oliere a dap ted to W e st Indian dialect. T h is com edy w hich w as packed w ith humour w as d e fin ite ly the audience's favourite, I t was produced b y G. K . M ac A lliste r who h an d-picked a v e ry versatile ca st.

Jam es L a R ose as the D o c to r was as usual, con fiden t and likeable on stage. H is greatest asset is th a t he strives upon an audience. A s B e st A cto r and B est E lo cu to r h© certain ly deserved the app reciation he received from th e audience.

L lo y d Me P h e rs o n a s Mr. G ra n t gave quite an e ffe c tiv p o rtrayal. T h is was probably easier to do because he had the m ost co m p lete costun e. A t tim es he tended to o veract but was gen erally an interesting character.

No one could be but impressed b y G eoff M assay's p o rtra y al o f L eo n ard . H is w as an exam ple of the a b ility o f a versatile acto r to m ake som ething great out of little.

V A L E R E and L U C A S , tw o com ic serva n ts played b y L en n o x Moses and D a llas R odgers were en tertain in g. N ot bad in Shakespearian p lays, R o d gersrevels in things W est Indian.

O h these w ild m ajestic anim als, fearless and free, Through m y trem ulous soul, send a shiver o f ecstasy, A s th e y roam a t random, wild and carefree.

O h when I hear th a t wild note o f n atu re, calling, I trem ble w ith fierce excitem en t and longing F or the glorious land where I belong.

At the beginning of the school year a decision was made to re-establish the Queen’s College Co-op Shop and to secure concessions which would enable Q. C. boys to purchase school equipments at reduced prices at certain business firms.

However due to the high incidence of indifference portrayed by members of the society the first plan was abandoned whilst only a few benefitted from the second.

This lack of interest in the society especially prevalent amongst boys from the middle and upper school continued throughout the following terms and as a result only a minimum number of deposits were made’ At the end of the August term members voted for the liquidation of the society and that all deposits should be refunded, Thus ended a not-much of an enterprising academic year 1968-69.

The Queen’s College Science Society entered its f fitenth year since its inception on the 23rd Sept. 1954, As such, it is a society that has a sound foundation. However, although many activities were planned and carried out successfully, there could be marked improvement in the attendance.

Meetings such as film-shows are well attended whilst only an interested handful comes to specific lectures.

This i - partly due to the fact, that Modern “A ” boys rarely attend Science Society Meetings, claiming that the topics for lecture are confined to the fields of Biology and Chemistry. They contend that more topics on Mathematics and Physics should be introduced. However, when there was a lecture this term by Mr. T. Fletcher of the Works and Hydraulics on on “Engineering as a Career4’, only four of them were present.

Our activities for the academic year included a visit to the Central Medical Laboratory (where we got an invitation to visit certain departments at a later date) and a lecture on “Human Parasites’6 by Mr. Laljie of the University of Guyana. Each term was interspersed with relevant lectures and film-shows, loaned ,0 us by the British Council and the U. S. I. S. It is hoped that with the continued good supervision of Mr. J. Gopaul and the drive of a reconstituted sixth form, the Science Society would continue to flourish ajain.

Over the years this society has been on the decline and during this year it continued to do so. At the beginning of the school, there were only two active members and as the year progressed, it became a one-man affair the other member claiming ‘pressure of studies*.

The society came to a standstill since the duties were too much for one person. An appeal was made to ths school for boys who were interested in joining this society, but the numbers quickly declined because they were afraid of the stings.

Approaching the end of last term, 1 was able to talk one of my colleagues into joining the society. With the additional help, a long over­ due inspection of hive was done.

Bui because o f the heavy shrubs a proper inspecticn was not carried out. A few weeks later, bees swarmed from one of the hives, Nothing was done to capture this swarm; this could be blamed on the society for we had no previous experience in capturing swarming bees. The bees therefore, disappeared before anything could be done.

Some plans have been made to create interest in the school in this society, so that we may increase our membership in the coming school year.

This year saw a reawakening of interest in this most rewarding society.

So many people wanted to use the societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facilities that were obliged to work four days a week.

However, it is saddening to note that most of these people were quite content to only use the facilities and to neglect devoting the time and trouble to this society which would have paid so much more dividends.

It is not necessary to thank the few who have gone out of their way to help other members.

Thanks are due to the laboratory assistants particularly Mr. Denny for their unstinted cooperation and assistance has made the year a successful one.

Members should note that continued disappointment in the quality of their photographs can be due only to technical faults, compositional errors or a combination of both.

If the trend begun this year is continued, next year would see an even greater stream-lining of our organisation; perhaps members would be asked to purchase their own chemicals so that two ends may be accomplished.

The first would be the channelling of subscriptions to buy and maintain equipment; the second would be to encourage greater awareness of members in the necessity of using chemicals economically.

This academic year, the Queen’s College Hindu Society, only a few year’s old, continued to function as one ol the most progressive societies in the school. All of the major activities of the Hindu Calendar were kept up. Each term of the school year had its own highlight.

Diwali was celebrated in the Christmas term, in the Music Room. The Guest Speaker was Mr. J. W. Chinapen, and at the close, Indian delicacies were distributed to the flow of Indian classical music. During the Easter term Phagwah was celebrated. Items on the agenda included a film-show introductory speech by Mr. Hetram, and an Indian orchestra. Over a hundred members, including our sisters from Bishops, were present. The clinching of the final Summer term was “An evening of Indian music’* when members of the society took part in a live exposition of Indian music.

However, our activities were not confined to festivities alone, but were diverse in scope, and included lectures and film shows. In the latter, we are indebted to the Indian High Commission for lending us films. My one regret however is that members only attended the general meetings, such as film-snows and celebrations.

Members should come more often to the meetings when plans are discussed and upon which the success of the general meetings so often depends. In closing, I would, particularly like to express my gratitude to Navin Singh, Seepersaud and Ramson. Such members have helped the Hindu Society to be, although the youngest, one of the most promising in school.

To describe our achievements as mediocre would be euphemistic.

It would, as a matter of fact, be giving praise where none is due. While it is true that there hits been no dearth of projects, there has been a basic lack of cooperation on the part of the members of the society who seem immune to intellectual stimuli and susceptible to the disease of absenteeism. Actually with the attendance our more recent meetings have been receiving, I cannot cease to be surprised that we are still functioning as a society.

From the inception it seemed that evil circumstance has dogged this year’s executive. At our first meeting which was very well attended, we were unable to procure the services of a qualified operator for the projector.

Through no fault of ours (the official operator failed to turn up) we were thus forced to postpone the showing of two excellent films on the histories of Guyana and Trinidad and Togago. Our second meeting, which we essayed to insure against disaster by holding in conjunction with a W est Indian History Quiz, ended after an auspicious start when the main fuse blew.

At such a time as this it would have been heartening to have had the support of the members. Yet when we decided on our headmasters advice to confine our meetings to members of the society, rather than invite members of other high schools, all subsequent meetings were poorly attended.

Indeed, at a lecture given by Miss M. T. King, the History Mistress at B. H. S, there were only seven people present, and these included members of the executive! In all fairness I must state, that the large attendance of of the first two meetings may have been due to the magic influence of the film show. Yet, the more recent meetings have been so structured as to supplement the work for the “O” Level history syllabus and to give a wider understanding of West Indian and Guyanese politics. How can a society function when attendance is directly proportioned to the numbers of film shown?

In concluding therefore I must point out that the ultimate survival of the society depends on the cooperation of its members. The basic aim of the Historical Society is to foster greater understanding of W. I. history by relating the growth of West Indian Politics to the regions history. It is not enough, however, to plead lack of membership or lack of participation on the ground that one is not ‘doing’ history as a subject. As members of W. I. society, we should have some knowledge however minute, of the forces which direct it. To be unable to recognize this fact is a sign of immaturity, and it is time we treat such intellectual miscreants with disdain.

Surely, by now, the ‘Science Men’ should have emancipated themselves and the ‘Arts Men’ learnt degree of logie? More than ever before, Guyana needs mature men.

The Academic Year 1968-69 has been a happy one when compared with the previous two years. There has been an improvement in the number of meetings held during the year and the attendance at meetings has also improved.

This is due to the interest shown by the boys in the Lower School.

We have had several lectures during the year; among these were topics like “The Arabic Language” and “The Pilgrimage at Mecca“.

The most important event during the year, however, was an Islamic Quizz held during the August term. The result of this quizz shows that many boys know very little of Islam. Prizes were won by K. Raheem, T. Bacchus and M. A. Raheem. I hope that the Quizz would be made an annual event since I am sure it would help to encourage members to attend meetings more regularly. I would like to urge members of the Upper School to be more interested in the society’s affairs.

I would like to thank those gentlemen who came to give us lectures on various topics as well as those who donated prizes for our Quizz.

The Christmas Term found the Inter-House Debating Competition in the primary stages of being run off when a misunderstanding with the administration caused the disgruntled committee to resign. This curtailed all activities for the rest of the term, in spite of efforts made by Mr. Drepaul to keep it going.

A new Committee was formed during the middle of the Easter term and for the Inter House Debating Competition plans were made. We then answered a challenge from Bishopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s High School to debate. Our team which consisted of R. Singh, Mac Allister and K. Persaud did a fine job but lost by a narrow margin.

The Inter-House Debating Competition was run off under the supervision of T. Bostwick with Woolley House emerging champions after defeating Cunningham House in the finals.

The Society takes this opportunity to thank all those who took time off to act as judges. Next term the Society hopes to include more of the Junior School in its activities.

In keeping with our I. S. C. F. motto— “To know Christ and then lo make Him known,” the members of our society “launched out into the deep” in school to make Christ known to the boys. We had quite a successful year, with weekly attendances averaging about 60. At the beginning of the school year in answer to our prayers, Mr. Bernard took over from Mr. Jonas as supervisor, who has gone to further his studies.

At the beginning of the school year, we had a very successful I. S. C. F. week.

The meetings were attended by various other I. S. C. F. clubs. We had several speakers who spoke on different topics chosen by the Q. C. committee. It was a joy to see many boys accept the claims of Christ on their lives and decide to follow Him. During the year, meetings were held every Thursday at 3.15 p.m. in the Music Room. These meetings were planned by members of the committee who met every Monday for programme-planning and prayer.

In order.to evangelise the school, forms were allotted to committee members who invited boys of their respective forms to Club meetings.

During the Easter Term, Moody Science films were shown every Friday at 6.15 p.m. in the Music Room. These were well attended by members of Q. C. as well as other Clubs.

At the Easter Leadership Camp he1d at Better Hope, we had the most representatives - ten - for any club. There were some interesting discussions on the qualities, duties and responsibilities of leaders as exemplified by men like Joshua of old.

Because of many decisions made during the year, Instruction Classes were held each Tuesday at 3.15 p.m. This pioved a great help tcvaids the spiritual growth of the young converts.

The year has not seen much in the line of active projects - by far the greater portion of our work has been in the realm of lectures and film shows.

The series of lectures on Guyana has drawn to a close. It has undoubtedly been of service to those in examination forms and has also been of inestimable worth in supplying information about their country to non-geography students.

In the closing stages of the series we were fortunate in obtaining Dr. Leslie Cummings, Head of the Faculty of Geography of our University, who gave a very illuminating talk on “Careers in Geography” with special reference to opportunity in Guyana.

The United States Information Services supplied most of the films for the year’s film shows, which dealt with the geographical features and industries in the U. S. A. Special thanks are due to Dr. Ausserieitner for giving two very aosorbing film shows on Canada which served to broaden our knowledge of Canada, and in so doing, to highlight the remarkably simiJar problems of progress in Canada and Guyana.

The major active project this year is a proposed field trip in the coming Summer Vacation. We are recieving the support of students and the co-operation of the Government, which are essentia] for a successful trip.

We must express our thanks to the various Government departments for their help in supplying lecturers for our series and to those students who have supported us during the year.

Special thanks are due to our colleagues in other schools who, by just attending the lectures and film shows, have boosted our morale and urged us to greater things. It is our fervent hope that cooperation among schools be continued in the coming years and that in unifying interested seal; us it may serve to intensify their thirst for knowledge in this field.

This year, the newly revived Dramatic Society has been even more active than in the previous year. Many ambitious projects were planned and most of them actually were brought off, if not with a bang, with at least a pop. Before listing achievements it is only fair to say that the society owes all its success to the efforts of our supervisor, Mr. Drepaul, and our Secretary-Treasurer, Me Allister. Between the two of them, they managed to keep the society going throughout the year, with little aid. It is, of course, patently clear that the majority of society members are only concerned with the society when they ttand to gain from it, in prestige, or very often in money.

This attitude has been reflected throughout the year’s activities, and it was only through the keenness of a handful of members that some of the projects were respectably successful.

In the Christmas term, our major play, “Richard 2” was produced.

The general opinion was that the acting was of a high standard: the stage crew was efficient and the sets were excellent; lighting was faulty in places, but I know that this was because of lack of equipment rather than lack of efficiency.

Yet everyone, especially those in the production felt that something was lacking; this was though not realised at the time, due to lack of discip.ine in the production; petty jealousies arose, between actors cast in the same role, and often due to the fact that there were girls in the cast. The lack of unity between cast and stage crew needs to be eliminated before another major play is attempted.

The Easter Term’s main activity was the Elocution Contest, which turned out to be rather mediocre. Probably thr most outstanding performance was that of Nunes of second form, who will certainly have to be snatched up to perform next Christmas Term despite his youth. Young of 4th form won Section “B‘\ “C” was taken by La Rose, who however, was not his usual self and was run too close for comfort by Adams of the fifth form. During this term, there were also a few lectures. These were often poorly attended Exams hampered activities in the last term but three film shows were put on by the society. Two plays “The Doctor in spite of himself” and the “Trials of Brother Jero“, produced by Me Allister and Caleb, respectively were put on.

The Society, being both rich and benevolent has donated $2CC0 towards the erection of the new pavilion.

The academic year, 1968-69, was an hectic one for the Queen‘s College stage hands. There were so many functions and special occasions held in the Queen’s College auditorium that the boys were kept busy. To name a few there were the two Queen’s College Dramatic Society productions of ‘The Doctor in Spite of Himself” and “The Trials of Brother Jero4’, The Miss Guyana 1969 Coronation and Ball, the Lion‘s Ball, the Guyana Music Festival two concerts held by the Maha Sabha and some minor occasions like the Q. C. Prefect’s Party and Ball.

This academic year also saw the recruiting of some new juniors from the lower school. These boys were recruited because of the need for extra stage hands and also because some of the senior boys had examinations and could not attend to school business. These new boys are:-S. Simon, H. Young Hendy, Rahim, Pilgrim, Carto, Richards, Saul, Narain and Benjamin.

Whilst there has been no major hitches to the smooth running of the Queen’s College stage it must be pointed out that the stage is in dire need of being rewired because at present the existing wiring scheme (which has been renewed since 1957) would seem inadequate, It must also be pointed out that if the Queen‘s College stage is to function properly replacements to equipment which was damaged during the years will have to be made.

For the coming academic year, 1969-70, the Head-of-Stage will be looking forward to greater cooperation from all junior stage hands and all persons concerned with the functioning of the stage.

The Chess Club of Queen's College held its first meeting for the school year 1968-69 on February 12, 1969 in room 5.

At this rather important meeting Mr. Rai enumerated the various reasons for the comparative inactivity of the club over the past year, and conducted elections of office-bearers.

Contrary to expectations, the club could not hold its Junior Chess Tournament this term (Easter). This was occasioned by the fact that much attention was diverted to the Annual Athletics Meet, which dominated and dwarfed nearly all of the other extra-curricular activities.

Nevertheless, practice sessions under the supervision of a few able sixth formers continued to be held in room 5.

At the beginning of the August term, the club held the long-expected Junior Chess Tournament. This was played in a knock-out-league basis and Alan Chung of the second form emerged this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Junior Chess Champion.

To this outstanding lad, the club extends its heartiest congratulations and best wishes for his future in this game. Also to be congratulated are Haller, Anderson and Madan, all of whom played creditably in the competition.

The club, however, regrets to state that records of the final games were not available for inclusion in this report.

Next term, the club expects to stage the Senior Chess Tournament.

This could not be realised this term for the simple reason that - with the large number of entrants - such a tournament would not have concluded before the termâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upshot.

Finally, the club thanks Mr. Rai without whose devoted attention to its needs and genuine interest in the game, the staging of the Junior Championships this term would have been an unreality.

This year has met with a favourable degree of success for Student’s Council.

Even tho ugh the beginning of the year saw the Council beset by grave financial inadequacies and unnecessary personal grievances among office-bearers, matters soon straightened out themselves and some work was done.

In the Christmas Term there were quite a few meetings held but unfortunately nothing at all was achieved because of a bit of unrest in the Council, A motion was before the house for several weeks and was finally abandoned. The motion asked that the Head and Deputy of the Student’s Council be not necessarily the Head and Deputy Head of School as laid down in the Constitution. There were several brilliant attempts made at soliciting the support of the students in paying up their subscriptions but these exhortations were practically devoid of success.

In the Easter Term the Council got on its feet and subscriptions were paid up by almost every form. The Council held a few meetings at which a considerable amount of planning was done. There were several attempts made towards the undertaking of a serious project for the year but the fine suggestions were all defeated by a few members who seemed bent on ridiculing everything. During this term there was also a Student’s Association meeting.

In the Final Term, the Council or rather the Executive proper decided to undertake two projects, mainly to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the School’s existence. It was decided that with the subscriptions collected in the Easter Term a plaque, on which the names of all the past Headmasters of Queen’s, would be made. A school crest is also to be made and it is proposed that this be sited over the front of the stage — a very strategic position. Up to the time of writing, both of these prospects were making tremendous headway and there is all Mkelihood that they both would be a staggering success.

In addition, the Council decided to offer forty dollars to the school Scouts with the main aim of purchasing tarpaulins for the Troupe. This sum was willingly accepted.

All in all, though this year has not been crowned with any unusual success, there has been activity within the Council to encourage its continuation and to enchance interest in this worthy organization in Queen’s College of the future.

O h Friday the 20th of June, a group of boys gathered in Room 6 to add to yet another of Q. C’s repertoire of clubs — Thus was the Lawn Tennis Association bom. It was high time indeed that so entertaining a sport was introduced at Queen’s. I personally know that amongst us we have several promising players, and others, who, though not so promising, are enthusiastic.

Like any other newly - formed group, our troubles are manifold. The choice of a suitable court is our foremost worry.

At present, the boys are contemplating playing at the National Park, while plans are in progress to transform one of the volley-ball courts into a soft court. At this point if I may be allowed to drop a hint to those concerned - a proper hard-court would not be unwelcome. In fact, a tiny rumour has been spreading, that before the next academic year closes, Queen’s would boast of a hard-court.

At present, only those who can obtain a racket are eligible to play, for we have no financial resources vet to buy ‘school rackets’; but as soon as we are able to do so, the rank aud file are welcome. In the form of championships Queen’s is eligible to join the Inter-School Lawn Tennis Tournament participated in by other secondary schools such as St. Stanislaus, Bishops, St. Josephs and St. Roses.

With our undeniable latent talent our motto should be ‘We shall overcome' as I am sure we shall. Long may Queen’s live to outserve her opponents.

This year has been quite fruitful for the Corps. In spite of the fact that our boys were hampered by other pressing school activities such as exams and sports, quite a good deal of training was effected thanks to N. C. O’s from GDF. After gruelling training during August vacations at Atkinson Field our Corps was left depleted as far as N. C. ®’s were concerned for the simple reason that a few of our boys left school. Consequently few promotions had to be made during the Christmas term, especially since Armistice Day parade was coming up. The following were promoted: C. Q. M. S. Singh to C. S. M; Sgt. Carmichael to C. Q. M. S; Corporals Smith and Qar^tojSergeants and Lance Corporals Watson and Bovell to Corporals also Cadets Henry^and^Husbands to Lance Corporals.

Our performance at the Armistice Day parade was good as usual.

Thirty ranks paraded under the command of 2nd Lt. Robinson.. The rest of the Xmas term was spent training recruits. Our N. C. Ohs only did some of this training because the G. D. F. sent up their men to assist in this direction.

The Easter term was highlighted by Inter House Athletics Championship of schools and consequently much training was not dene. The recruits continued to have regular drills while a few fine points in basic foot movements were ironed out. Late in the term these boys were introduced to weapon exercises with the .303 weapon-a move which certainly enhanced interest in the Corps.

In the final term much practice was dene by Cadets and recruits. Fiftyranks under the command of 2nd Lt. Robiinson took part in the three mile long Independence March. It was heartening to note that ali our boys finished the march and actually endured the entire Ceremony. Recruits were measured and outfitted and continued to do revision work along with the basic Cadets. This year camp was held from the 13th to 28th August at Atkinson Field and the emphasis of the camp fell on training our boys to become officers.

As several of the senior N. C. O’s were leaving school towards the end of the term and were thus unable to attend camp. Several promotions had to be made W. E. F. 7. 7. 69. Sgt. Masih-Das was promoted to C.S. M; Corporals Bovell and Hugh to Sergeant; Lance Corporal Kirton to Sergeant. L ! Corporals Gerard, Husbands, Ralph and Cadets Singh, Bourne and Henry to Corporals; while Cadets Thompson, Bacchus, Jones, Mahon, Adams, Benjamin and Forsythe were elevated to Lance Corporals.

The Corps marched past at the 125th Anniversary Celebrations of the school and as usual their performance was outstanding.

We have lest several of our senior members at the end of the August Term and the onus rests on the new N. C. 0 ‘s to continue the good work of our Cadet Corps - reputedly the best of its kind in the Caribbean. Keep the colours flying young soldiers.

Sports Section Sportsman of the Year He entered Queen’s College in September 1962. His enthusiasm for sport especially Table Tennis formed the basis of his appointment in 1964 as the school's Junior Table Tennis Captain, and in that same year was runner-up in the Junior Table Tennis Competition.

Just around this time his athletic ability was manifested having been a member of the victorious Junior Relay Team for Austin House on Sports Day of 1965. The next year he was runner -up in the under 15 division in Athletics placing record in the Long Jump and 220 yds; and third in the 100, 400, hurdles and triple jump events.

In 1967 he was a member of the School’s Senior Table Tennis Team, and was also runner-up in the under 17 division in Athletics winning the Triple Jump, placing second in the 440 yds and hurdles events and third in the 100 yds and 880 yds events. In that same year he represented Queen’s in the Demerara Secondary School Championships and was placed second in the under 17 Long Jump and Hurdles. Also in that year he represented Queen’s in the Wight Cup Competition taking a total of nine wickets from four matches, his best figures being 4 for 72 against Central High School.

1968 was a year of success for Laurence who emerged the school's under 17 champion winning almost everything that theie was to be taken away in his division. He won the Austin House Championship Award, the Field Event Championship Cup, as well as the Pentathlon Championship Cup. He was also appointed the school’s Table Tennis Captain in that year and captained the team to several victories.

Laurence’s last year at school was yet again crowned with success. He was the school’s Senior Champion winning the Triple Jump and Long Jump and placing second in the Shot Putt and the 440 yds and third in the 220 yds and High Jump. He won the Austin House Boy Award,, the Field Events Championship Cup as well as the Pentathlon Championship Cup all for the second consecutive year. He also broke the record in the Senior Triple Jump Event setting one of 43 feet, his second record breaking feat in Queen’s. In lable Tennis he was the Runner-up in the Senior Individual Championship.,To end off quite a scholastic career at Queen's Laurence Clairmonte was awarded school colours in Athletics and Table Tennis and two subjects at the G. C. E. Advanced Level Examination.

Y ear’s Review of Sports in Queen’s College The year 1968-69 was a year of hum-drum life where “Sports*’ is concerned for whereas, the school excelled in certain fields, in others it reached the nadir of achievement. Several factors were responsible for this unequal distribution of attainments, and since it is not for me to make comments which are personal opinions, J shall simply say that lack of organisation was the root of all our difficulties.

In Football, the school suffered mostly, for there was no supervisor to organise and direct efforts, and this state of affairs is reflected in the ragged group which we call the Football Team. Cricket this year was exceptionally good and this represents the highest of our achievements.

Table Tennis was well organised and many new talents were brought to the fore. One cannot speak in the same tone for the Hockey, Volley Ball and Cycle Club.

Athletics in the school was kept at its usual excellent standaid, and many records were broken and made. As a stimulus to sports generally, the school is now embarking on building a pavilion; plans are already well on the way, and before the end of the calendar year, we shall see visible evidence of such plans.

It is hoped that this will provide a rallying point around which Sports at Queen’s College will be given an extra boost.

T h e H andicap Tournam ent was ru n o ff in the final term an d there were over one hundred and fdrty entrants. P o in ts from (-8) to (plus 10) an d upsets w ere th e ord er o f th e d a y , fro m th e p relim in ary rounds to th e finals. “ D ark H orse” C a rry l o f th e F ifth Form disposed of Senior Cham pion Phillips in the second round and la te r w a t on to elim inate C ap t Clarke and Greene all three of whom started a t (-8). C a rry l (plus 6) p fc y e d exce ed in gly w ell to down a ll these top p lay ers and used his trem endous lead to good purpose throughout. Q ueen 's College also entered a team in th e Sherlock Cup T ea m C h am p io n sh ip . In the first m atch we defeated St. Stanislau s' College five gam es to nil. In the q u arter finals we lost b y five gam es to nil to “ B an k s' ’ who b o asted ©f three top p layers in th® co u n try .

V o lle y ball has had a successful y ea r. F o u r mem bers of the original " A ” team left so we had the ta s k of building a new team . W e found new s ta lw a rts, B arran, R am bih ar and A li w ho cau gh t on the gam e m ost easily . D uring the Christm as Term we practised th ree tim es a w eek in a n ticip atio n of a com petition. W e p layed m a tch esagain st th e U. In the E a ste r term , alth ou gh th ese numbers were reduced, owing to A th le tics, p ractices s till continued th ree tim es a w eek. H ow ever, in the A u gu st term practices were held every day on our co u rt for three w eeks. Then the ra in y season set in and our court was u n fit for p lay. N evertheless we p layed a t Burnham C ourt for the rem ainder o f the term and it was here th a t we showed w hat we were w orth. W e p layed m atches a g a in st a G eorgetow n team w ith N a tio n al p lay ers w hich we defeated.

W e also p layed against V est D em erara, F a tim a , Dw arfs, Gems, St. Stanislaus and Charlestow n all of w hom we d e fe a te d .

L a te r in the term we entered tw o team s, Q. C. “ A ” and Q. C. “ B ” i s th e Junior L eague C o m p etitio n . T h e “ B ’’ team lost all of their m atches excep t th eon e against St. Stanislaus.

The outstanding p layers in the “ B ” team were B arran, T rum an and H ansen. T h e “ A ” team was b y far more successful. W e won all the m atches in onr section and on m anyoccasionsw e were spotlighted in the sports section of the G raph ic. W e played in the finals, again st Dwrarfs, ©ne of the m ost th rillin g m atches ever p layed a t the co u rt. W e emerged as cham pions of th e com p etition b y beating D w a rfs 13-15; I5-i 3; i S-g; 17-15. T h e outstan ding p layers in the “ A ” team were R ichm ond, D a S ilv a and D. Persaud. Richm ond, D a Silva and Husbands h ave since p ractised w ith th e G eorgetow n team .

H O C K E Y S till grieving the less o f the m ajority of the school team ; a great bid, wii h the cooperation of Mr. London, Corsbie and Y o n g , was m ade to form a new team . T he appeal for a new team . The appeal for new participants was met b y a great response. A survey of our equipm ent was then carried out and it was found th a t we were in need of some good h o c k e y sticks.

These Mr. London promised to sup ply w ith funds from the Gam es Club. B u t it was n e t u n til the 21 s t. A p ril th a t 10 hockey sticks and 5 h o ck ey balls w ere bought.

W ith th is new equipm ent, our p ra ctices progressed excellen tly, the new hands to the gam e were s till feelin g th eir w ay but m any of them showed promise.

D uring the E a ste r ho lid ays, th e C arib. tea m of T rin id ad arrived io p la y a series of gam es in G u y a n a . A n in vitatio n from the G u y an a H o ck e y Board ©f C on trol was mad© to Q.C. to p lay against this team ; but the o ffe r had to be turned dow n because our team had mot been fu lly organ ised.
