A knock on the door of my Study a few days ago; on entering, the Editor requested a Foreword for the Magazine.

The intervals between successive issues certainly appear to me to get shorter and shorter but on this particular occasion there may be some reason for it, for since the last issue many things in connection with the School have kept us all pretty busy and time has slipped quietly by. In September last we started up in our new building—the starting-up being pre­ ceded by a strenuous time during which all our belongings were transported from Brickdam to Thomas Lands. Then followed the unofficial opening in the first week of the Autumn Term at which His Grace the Archbishop of the West Indies as Chairman of the Board of Governors offered prayers and gave a short address. A few weeks later His Grace dedicated and unveiled a War Memorial Tablet to a Master and Old Boys who fell in the Second World War, and in early December we had the official opening by His Excellency the Governor. Now that we are safely installed in our new building we all appreciate, I am sure, how lucky we are to have such a fine place in which to work and play. Let us all take the greatest possible care to preserve our new home in its present splendid condition I We now have to get our surrounding grounds into good condition—not too easy a job.

But do not despair, we will manage it, given a little time and, t hope, some assistance from the Public Works Department !

The yearly trial of the public examinations wiii shortly be upon us; good luck to all who are sitting—and mind that someone pulls off the British Guiana Scholarship for us !

EDITORIAL

Settling Down.

Two years ago, the Principal in his Foreword, the Head Boy in his Review of the Year, and the Editor in his Comments, spoke of that issue as being “probably the last one to be published from our old building at Brickdam.” They were all looking forward keenly to the occupation of our New Building. But last year's issue found us still looking.

On the publication of this Magazine we will have been in residence at Longden Park for almost a year. It is no longer the “ New Building” we speak of, but simply “The School” . At first we were a little uncomfortable.

For we ran smack into new rules and new and tedious restrictions. The building itself was cold and unreceptive; she looked upon us with indif­ ference, lacked the parental fondness of our old home, seemed annoyed if we trod too noisily along her corridors : (Perhaps she was a little fearful about her coming struggle against the pounding batteries of ignorance and illiter­ acy).

But now she has accepted us for what we are — her friends, her adopted children whom she must take in, nurture (for a while) then return, grown-up and bettered, to the Society of the World.

So too we Queen’s College boys have accepted our new school building — as a personal responsibility to each of us, and have realised that our new school itself as much as the older “School Spirit” is to be kept at the highest standards. Three memorable ceremonies held in the Hall last year — the Blessing of the building by His Grace the Archbishop on October 4th; the dedication of a Tablet to our Heroes of World War II on November 11th; and the official opening and prize-giving on December 4th — impressed this upon all of us'.

There are, indeed, several things which our new school still lacks. Our additional playing fields and tennis courts are not yet available. Our extensive Kitchen and Dining Hall have not yet been used (as a Kitchen and Dining Hall). Our tremendous stage has not yet received the curtains, the backdrops, the costumes and equipment it requires. Nor, with the largest Auditorium in the West Indies, have we as yet seen any attempt to stage plays and concerts on a scale as magnificent as our new surroundings demand. The Main Entrance to our building has not yet been beautified with the extensive

lawns, well grown hedges, and well-plotted flower beds for which there is ample room. Nor, at length, (much regretted by the Senior Boys) has there been an official students fiesta to show off our new possession. Now that we have the means, it is felt that there should be something like an annual Graduation Dance during the Prize Giving season each year. Recreational and entertainment facilities for the Junior and AAiddle School have also been increased with our changeover, but no use has so far been made of them.

The spirit of Queen’s College, it is said, will not have changed with a mere change of school buildings. But, surely, just as education has received a new spur, so should cultural and social activities have been given a much greater incentive and a wider expression.

To our building we have brought old traditions, but of our building the newness itself gives us scope for founding in it new traditions. Let us clear up these ‘'not yets.’' To the old spirit, let us add new fuel.

The Year In Retrospect.

The outstanding event of the year, and indeed, one of the most historic occasions in the annals of Queen’s College, was the opening of our new and magnificent building by His Excellency Sir Charles Woolley. It was a great day for Sir Frederick Seaford, who, much to our regret, could not be present, Capt. H, Nobbs, Mr. E. O. Pilgrim and many others who have long looked forward to the occasion. The Guard of Honour by our own Cadet Corps, the fine speeches, the excellent singing, the prize distribution, the inspection tour of the building were all features that have made the opening ceremony very memorable.

Our performances in both the Case and Wight Cup Competitions were rather disappointing this year. Gibbons was again credited with a century.

Chin and Jackman were consistent in their batting, while Bishop is to be congrat­ ulated on his fine bowling display. Gibbons and Jackman were called to prac­ tise for the Colony XI last year in preparation for the Barbados tour, the latter representing the Colony against Barbados then and against Trinidad this year.

We defeated St. Stanislaus in both the Jacob and Dias Cup semi-finals. Last year we again won the Reed Cup. At school, in the Inter-House Competitions, Percival walked off with the shield for the Aquatic Competition, whilst sturdy Lawrence Taitt of the same House emerged Senior champion in Athletics. The Athletic Shield went to Weston House, and the Football Shield to Austin House.

Our congratulations go to J. R. S. Munroe, Guiana Scholar for 1951, and also to C. V. Lewis, who gained one of the two B.G. Government Exhibitions and will be proceeding to the U.C.W.I. later this year. In May last, Samnauth, L. A. Banarsee and V. F. Van Nooten were awarded prizes by the Alliance Francaise, the former for his creditable performance at the G.C.E. Advanced Level, and the latter two for the same at the Ordinary level.

For the second time in succession our Cubs won the Akela Cup by emerging victors in the annual Athletic Competition. Our Scouts are showing great progress under the leadership of S. M. Butler. Two of the senior scouts, M. E. Miller and I. R. Phillips, were presented with the Queen’s Scout badges by Lord Rowallan, Chief Scout of the British Empire. Our Cadets have shown commend­ able improvement in shooting during the past year.

T he problem of stall shortage remains acute. This year we have Mr. C. E. Barker back with us with B.Sc. (Chemistry) qualifications. Three of our masters, Messrs. K. A. L. Brown, C. P. Yhap and M. T. Lowe, have been awarded schol­ arships to further their studies in Geography, Mathematics and Biology respec­ tively. We take this opportunity in welcoming Messrs. 1). Hetram, E. A. Wason and J. Ramsaran who have joined the staff during this school year.

We are proud of those who have kept the traditional standard of our school at work and at games. We all owe much to our masters, and they, and, indeed, ail of us, owe this all to God. - R . L. CLARKE. Captain of the School.

A day ago—on the very eve of publication— we learnt that Gaptain Howard Nobbs, O.B.E..

M.Sc., F.R.I.C., will be relin­ quishing his ap­ pointment as our Principal at the end of Au­ gust and will leave for the United Kingdom early in September on his pre­ retirement leave.

Capt. Nobbs became Principal of Queen’s College in 1931.

Previous to his appointment here he had had a distinguished career. Educated at Brockley County School and the Univer­ sity College, London where he gained his M.Sc. degree, he later became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry. During the First World War he served with the 1st Battalion, North­ amptonshire Regiment, and the Royal Engineers in France. He was demobilised with the rank of Captain, We are exceedingly sprjry to see him go. During his entire headmastership he has always

School’s interests at heart. Last year, 1951, for his services to Queen’s College and to Educa­ tion in British Guiana he was made an Officer of the Most Ex­ cellent Order of the British Em­ pire. Last year, too, our Principal reached a long sought goal—the opening of our new building. He was one of the small band of men who had devoted much energy to the realisation of this New Queen’s College Building.

Our Principal leaves behind him many memories, many changes and improvements effected during his term of office. And if Queen’s College has profited during his stay, we can but hope that he, too, has gained something from being with us; has found among his duties moments of pleasure; has formed among us new and last­ ing acquaintances and attach­ ments.

For the future, we wish him the very b est!

The August holidays of 1951 brought to a close one of the most successful years in our existence. Of our victories in athletics and swimming and our close second in cricket much has been said in the last issue of this magazine. Football was soon added to our list of wins.

Then the exodus was upon us. Led by our House Master, Mr. Pilgrim, Frank Mongul (ex House Captain), Bacchus, R. C., Wong, I. R., Phillips, J. A. and Branker, M., the cream of our athletic and games talent, left school. We wish these boys and others who have left us within the past year all the best in their present activities.

The usual September influx of boys, and, in this case of masters too, fol­ lowed. From St. Stanislaus we welcomed a new master, Mr. Yhap, who has shown much interest in Llouse affairs. Since then, Mr. Pilgrim has returned, and we cannot but express our gratitude to Mr. Allsopp whose willing help and co-operation during Mr. Pilgrim’s absence were invaluable.

In this year’s sports activities, the Fates did not favour us as they did the previous year. At cricket and athletics we fought gamely, our finishing third in the latter being due mainly to the great efforts of our star athletes, two of whom emerged champions. Aquatics seems to have remained an art peculiar to “A” House; we won the Swimming Shield for the fourth consecutive year.

So has yet another year passed with Percival House persevering as she always has done and ever will do.

First of all let us welcome to our circle Mr. Hetram and Mr. Wason, and thank them for their whole-hearted interest in the activities of the house.

The past year has not been a very successful one for us. We had no Victor Ludorums amongst us. Indeed the spirit of the house was somewhat low.

There are two boys, however, who must be congratulated on the brilliant efforts that they made to keep us afloat in the field of Athletics. I allude to Daly and Gray our senior and junior champions. I do not think that I would be far wrong if I say that Gray’s points were amassed not only by his athletic abilities but also by a fine exhibition of determination. I must also say that despite the pressure of examination work, Daly has done a fine job as captain of the cricket, football and athletic teams, and I hope to see him as captain of our house at the beginning of the new school year.

For the past few years Raleigh House has not been fully living up to the expectations of those who have seen her in all her glory. We cannot continue making excuses. Just think of the few who are pulling their weight, and try to do the same for the common good of the House.

R. N. LEE. Firstly, on behalf of the House, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back our House Master, Mr. Maudsley, to congratulate Mr. Barker 6n obtaining his B.Sc. degree, and to thank Mr. Archer for his services during the House Master's absence.

In the Inter-House competitions which took place during the past year, Austin House has been quite successful, and from the House spirit and enthusi­ asm shown by the younger members of the House, there is no doubt that Austin will continue to be just so for the next school year.

During the last term of the school year of 1950-51, the Inter-House football competition was played, and in this we ended up as runners-up, but with most of the team still in school, it is most likely that we shall emerge winners before this school year finishes.

As usual the first term of the new school year is reserved for the cricket competition. There were two sections. We emerged champions of our section and defeated D'Urban House in the final. Our success in this competition was due to the fact that each member of our teams did his bit. and did not depend wholly on the more experienced players.

After a hard fight with Weston House, we had to be content with second position in athletics. In this department it was encouraging to see that the younger members obtained most of our points. We must congratulate D. Burnett, who emerged as the Under 17 champion, and also Stoby, M. A. and Matthews, T., who were runners-up in the Under 15 and Under 13 divisions.

In aquatic sports we were runners-up ^igain. The House has some fine swimmers in Rickford; Lee, G. and Kaufmann in particular who was just edged out of the Victor Ludorum Cup by Jaikaran of Percival House.

In concluding I would like the other members of the House to remember that although it is not everyone who can perform well, everyone can try, and in so doing put Austin House at the top. The House depends on y o u / R. N. LEE. House Captaiji.

It has been stated that Becks’s grandfather, coming of hardy stock, was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. # * * * One of the Editors, speaking on the virtues of weight lifting, said that when­ ever he feels the impulse to take strenuous exercise, he just sits quietly until the feeling passes.

This school year is the first we have spent in our new building and I hope that boys of our House will play their part creditably in equalling, and even sur­ passing the outstanding per' rmances of Queen’s in the past.

Both Mr. Taitt and Mr Yansen went on leave at the beginning of Spring Term and for the last two terms Mr. Chunnilall has been acting the part of House Master very successfully assisted by Mr. E. L. Archer to whom we are very thankful for the interest he has shown in House affairs.

Much to our credit we reached the finals in the Inter-House Cricket Compe­ tition, but unfortunately lost the deciding game to Austin House. In Athletics, we placed fourth, while in the Aquatic Competition we were third, our under 13, under 15 and under 17 divisions being mainly responsible for this place. ............ " J ■* >.

Our House Ptyty in December was, perhaps, -our closest reminder of the days of which Mr. Yansen used to speak at House Assembly in our old Geography room.

We join with the school in congratulating J. R. S. Munroe, an old boy of the House, who, last year, won the Guiana Scholarship. For the second time in succession the Percival Scholar is a member of D’Urban House. This year he is K. E. D. Potter. Our boys were also awarded two of the other Exhibitions granted on the results of the G.C.E. Ordinary Level.

At games we have not been as successful as in the last school year, but, with­ out doubt, the system of House Assembly is gradually moulding the House spirit into the characters of our younger members. Remember, boys, each of you can make your contribution to the House whether it be in your work, at games, or in making an extra donation to our Annual Social or to a collection for a charit­ able organisation. Take advantage of your opportunity when it arises.

Even though I shall not be with you, my wholehearted support and my best wishes you have always.

The last Magazine Year has been one of some anxiety for Pilgrim House.

In the realm of sport we have not done as well as we might have, although some improvement could be seen as the year progressed. In the football competition some of our players performed quite creditably, the most outstanding being R. M. Glasford and R. A. Gibbons, our captain and vice-captain, respectively.

The goals scored against us were, to say the least, rather monumental, and our valiant goal-keeper, N. A. Carter has, I am sure, our deepest sympathy.

With such a start, the House next turned its attention to cricket. Here there was a great improvement in our performance. This was largely due to the presence of one or two of our school players, chief of whom was our School and House Captain, R. A. Gibbons. Here I must mention that there was much to be desired in the support of our juniors. Improvement in their standard of play is essential, if our cricketing prestige is to be maintained.

And thus we came to the Annual Athletic Sports Meeting. This was a triumph once again for our fast-striding champion R. A. Gibbons. As Atlas bore the earth on his shoulders, so did Gibbons bear his House. It was indeed unfortunate that he did not win the Open Championship for the second time.

Our fine performance was due also to the untiring efforts of our House Masters; we are indeed grateful to them.

It is not surprising then that leaving the Sports, we turned to the Swimming competition with eagerness. All that need be said is that our enthusiasm did not receive its just reward.

Leaving the field of sports, we now come to what can truly be called the battleground of Examinations. Here the House has had a long and distin­ guished career, and the results of the 1951 June Examinations in no way disap­ pointed us. We must congratulate the successful candidates, and wish those sitting this year the best of luck; may they not trust to luck alone.

By the time that our School Magazine will have been issued, our House Master, Mr. Cameron will have left us on holiday. We wish him all the best, and hope that his holiday will be a very happy one. We must also take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Ramsarran, w7ho has recently joned the school and our House.

And thus we turn from the achievements of the past to the hopes of the future. It is to the younger members of the House that we must appeal. It is for them to maintain and enhance the fair name that the House has acquired over many years. Play the game fairly, and I am sure the House will never have cause to grieve for anything done — or left undone.

Our greatest achievement during the last year was our success in the Athletic Sports. At the previous two meetings we had been beaten into second or third position lor the championships, in spite of our early lead on the Standard Points.

But this year we ‘Mid the double” and both Championship and Standard Point Shields are now ours. Important too are our chances of keeping them.

For, significantly, it was the efforts of the younger members of the House which won the Shield. And in G. M. Baker, B. B. Hope, J. A. M. Proctor, M. E. Miller and the other youngsters whose spirit won her points, Weston House has the strength to retain her triumph.

That strength must be extended to other House activities. For our victories on the track are somewhat lessened by our performances at the cricket pitch, the football field and the swimming pool; and only at our Christmas House Social — for which we joined with Pilgrim House —can we be said to have equalled the happy success of cur Athletic Team.

At cricket we fell from a position as last year's semi-finalists to a mere second place in our division; in the Football Championship we were unable to improve on our third position; our showing in the Swimming Sports was, in its own disas­ trous way, as remarkable as our performance at Athletics. Yet individual per­ formances stand out and in the future we shall be wanting in neither strength nor leadership.

We have to congratulate, by the way, a past leader of the House — M. M. Moore for his achievements in sport. He was selected to tour Jamaica with the Caribbean team.

One word more — a word of congratulation to our vice-captain C. V. Lewis, o won the British Guiana Exhibition for the University College of the West iies.

During the next year, too, we shall be losing (temporarily) Mr. Brown and Mr. Lowe who are going abroad on study-leave. To them, and to those senior boys who will leave school at the end of this year, good luck from Weston's !

i James Robert Stanislaus Munroe entered Queen's College in September, 1943 as a Government County Scholar, and three years later 1947 won an external Government Junior Scholarship. In 1948 he wrote the School Certificate examination of the Oxford and Cambridge Joint Board, obtaining exemption from the London Matriculation, and upon his excellent work in the examination was awarded the Percival Exhibition In January 1949 he joined the Cadet Corps and rose rapidly to the rank of Lance Corporal. In September of the same year he was appointed a School and Durban House Prefect.

In 1950 he passed the London Higher School Certificate Examina­ tion. In March of the next year 1951, he sat the Examination of the University College of the West Indies, and in June the London Uni­ versity General Certificate Examination (Advanced Level) in this the year of its inception. A few months later he was awarded a U.C.W.I. Scholarship, which he accepted, and leaving school in July, 1951, he proceeded to Jamaica. It was during his first Term there, and late in 1951 that he heard that he had been awarded the British Guiana Scholarship.

The Case Cup Season, 1952. (by L.A.J.) In this our third season in this competition we were far from successful and found ourselves at the bottom of the list. This was due to our poor fielding throughout the competition.

Our bowling resting on the shoulders of Mr. Richmond and Bishop was of a high standard. The latter bowled extremely well this season.

Chin, Jackman and Gibbons were our chief run-getters and Gibbons recorded the only century this season when he scored a bright 112 against the E.I.C.C. We started the season by losing two consecutive matches against the B.G.C.C. and the Police S.C. When we met the E.I.C.C. we ran up the mammoth total of 407, the highest score of the competition then, but the Indians were able to pass this score through our decadent fielding.

Against the G.C.C. and Transport and Harbours S.C. we again conceded full points to our opponents. The D.C.C. led us on first innings, but we managed to get 4 points from the Malteenoes S.C. for a first innings lead.

There is no reason why we shouldn’t do better next season if particular attention is paid to our fielding. Modest though our results may be we will keep on fighting always remembering that teamwork and energy can often accomplish more than individual brilliance. #

Who’s Who At Cricket L. A. JACKMAN : A steady, sure, dogged No. 3 who has earned third place in the Colony averages this season : medium paced bowler and safe catch.

W. A. CHIN : A patient and plodding player who scores with well placed drives and has been the most consistent scorer this season—also mentioned in Colony averages.

M. BAIRD : An opening bat with a style of his own. Drives powerfully but cannot resist temptation "to hang” his blade outside the off stumps; a trying fieldsman.

LEROY JACKMAN

With the B.G. Team in Trinidad On Tuesday, 5th February, 13 cricketers left Atkinson Field by B.W.I.A. plane to contest honours with Trinidad. I happened to be one of them. We arrived at Piarco where we were greeted by officials of the Trinidad Cricket Board of Control.

Before we joined the cars to take us to “downtown" Port-of-Spain, however, someone murmured that Lana Turner, the famous American film star had just arrived. Everyone rushed to see this beautiful actress but it turned out to be only a hoax. Travelling along the beautiful Churchill-Roosevelt road which is bordered for the best part of its sixteen miles by canefields and scattered Indian huts, we reached the posh Queen's Park Hotel which was to be our home in Trinidad.

This massive five-storied concrete building faces the “Savannah", Trinidad's communal playground, it caters largely for American tourists. Cab Calloway, the famous American band leader stayed there. In it there is an elevator system of course, a writing and reading room, a cosy bamboo-jointed designed cocktail bar, recorded music every night, balmy night breezes in cool spacious rooms, in fact everything the tired cricketer after a day in the sun will want.

On Wednesday 6th. we had our first practice session at the Queen's Park Oval where the tournament was to be held. This ground is oval-shaped as its name suggests. It is quite different from Bourda in that there are no trees around it. There is a huge and picturesque mountain range which stretches in a semi-circle along the north side of the ground.

Many members of the team were playing on a matting wicket for the first time. Batsmen found they had to employ more back-play and bowlers had to learn to pitch up the ball more.

The first match started on Friday 8th in good weather which was to last all through the tournament. It will be remembered that Trinidad in one and-ahalf days scored 376. B.G. when they took theii turn at the wickets were all out for 228 on Monday (8th). Trinidad declared their second innings closed at 252 for 7. Asgaralli scored a century. B.G. had to struggle on Wednesday 13th to prevent defeat and the game ended in an honourable draw.

In the second match which started on Saturday 16th B.G. lost by 8 wickets.

Asgaralli scored his second consecutive hundred when he gave a sparkling dis­ play in the Trinidad first innings. Leslie Wight also scored a century in the B.G. second innings. His was an innings of resolution and determination. This was the team’s last night in Port-of-Spain. Since our arrival many parties and dances were given in our honour. Those that come readily to mind are the

cocktail party at the “Rainbow Terrace” at which Mr. Philip Vieira, a Guianese was our host, the evening spent, at the Victory Calypso Tent, the swim at beautiful Maracas Bay and the Calypso bounce by the Amazons Girls’ Club.

Marjorie John, Flavia Davis and Gem McCommie who came over here with a table tennis team are members of this club.

But the biggest affair was Mr. Tang Choon’s dinner party. The quiet, diminutive Trinidad Captain served up exotic Chinese dishes and drinks ad lib, As one member of our team wittily remarked, the only thing that wasn’t served was dog-meat ! Among the many guests were Lance Pierre, Ken Ablack, and Ben Sealey who enlivened the proceedings with his spicy jokes.

The team left Port-of-Spain on Thursday night 21st for San Fernando 40 miles away. It was accorded a civic reception the next morning at San Fernando Town Hall. That was the first time that any visiting cricket team was so honoured.

As Skinner Park, San Fernando’s cricket ground, was undergoing repairs, the two day match against South Trinidad was held at Gwaracara Park, kindlylent for the occasion by Trinidad Leaseholds Ltd. This park, the home ground of Sonny Ramadhin, is situated on the outskirts of the oil refineries at Point-aPierre. It has a lovely turf wicket, one of the few in Trinidad.

Before a large crowd, with B.G. batting first, the match began in brilliant sunshine. Our batsmen in carefree style, hammered the steady South Trinidad bowling from the start spearheaded by Demming, the fast bowler, and Samraj a leg-spinner and at the close of play had scored 332. Leslie Wight scored his second consecutive century, Lennie Thomas a lightning 43 and myseif 45.

The next day the South Trinidad batsmen put up a stubborn resistance but Norman Wight; proved too much for them in the end, and they were all out for 228.

The people in the South were just as hospitable as the Port-of-Spainers.

Many members of the team took the opportunity to inspect the distilleries in this vast oil compound. On the evening before we left San Fernando for Portof-Spain on the first leg of our return journey home, Justice W ard,'a former Puisne Judge here gave a Cocktail Party in our honour. The C.Y.O. also invited us to a Fancy Dress Competition, at which the Southern belles turned out with their beautiful costumes. Everyone was sorry to leave San Fernando. The team flew off from Piarco on Sunday 24th after a memorable tour.

A little boy was late for school, and as he hurried, he prayed, “Dear Heaven, don’t let me be late—please Heaven, don’t let me be late !” Then he happened to stumble and said “you don’t have to be in such a blinking rush !”

Personal Reminiscences of a Grand T our.

by ARNOLD GIBBONS (VIB) It all started on a cool August evening at about 6.15 when a gaudy coloured sun was slowly descending in the West so that it made the surrounding atmo­ sphere appear somewhat ethereal. Twenty of us embarked on the ‘Canadian Challenger’; they were Mr. Archer, Bud Lee, Maurice Moore, Frank Mongul, John Phillips, Aubrey Bishop, Mike Branker, Leroy Jackman, Wilmot Chan, Ronnie Bacchus, Leo Owen, Rollo and Gary Lee, Ivor Wong, Neil Fung, Walter Chin, Norman Beaton, Noel Bacchus and I. The ‘Canadian Challenger’ is a small vessel and we were housed aft like a pack of sardines. Someone from shore cried out, “smooth sailing boys”, and then all of a sudden cheerful farewells were interrupted by profound and deepest thoughts. The thought of the dreaded sea-sickness came upon us and “Leo” was heard to mention something about a ‘libation to Good old King Neptune’—nothing was done, however, and many were to be sorry later. ‘Laude gratemur scholae’ went drifting back to shore as the ship moved off and then we turned our backs upon this country of our birth to contemplate our ‘airy cabins—for we travelled deck.

The last lights of the city were quickly left behind and we settled down amidst the rhythmical drone of the ship’s engines and the splashing of the water and the turbulent rise and fall of the vessel.

Days at sea are proverbially long, but amidst a happy band of cheerful youths they can pass with astonishing rapidity. Amid Leo’s guttural singing, Ronnie’s theatrical laughter, Squeaky’s mimics and Maurice’s antics we passed our time at sea. John was liberal with chocolates which on quite a few occasions brought additional suppers to not a few of the sea’s fishes. ‘Foo’ was unusually reticent while ‘Jacko prayed for “souls lost in Bacchic revelry,” he said. Trini­ dad was sighted about 4.30 the following afternoon and we had to gaze at an almost interminable expanse of coastline for almost three hours. Norman pointed out the Gulf of Paria immortalised in a well known calypso and many gazed into the brownish water on the chance of another floating corpse !

Yes this was Trinidad, the land of the Humming Bird, a city of lights. The very stars in the heavens seemed to join themselves to the lights on the hills so that one vast city of twinkling lights appeared before you. Brightness in the heavens, brightness on the slopes of the hills, brightness on the level land and even in the very waters the reflection could be seen. The view was entrancing and precluded from our minds for a moment the desire of going ashore. We docked at 8 p.m. and after procuring shore passes were allowed to land, and each disposed him­ self to his own bents.

There is a quality in a strange land which gratifies the traveller. He is possessed of a fascination for everything with which he comes in contact and sees. His wits are constantly about him so that his reason plays tricks with his imagination and he surrenders now to the former and then to the latter. This is particularly so at night. Darkness shrouds everything in a cloak of mystery so that one is wary and suspicious of any wayfarer after dark, but withal the experience is thrilling because of its very novelty. The echo of one’s shoes on the pavement seems more distinct, the lengthy shadows look more eerie, rain drops which normally would cause one to run for shelter hit us with intrinsic delight so that we are the richer for the experience. So it was with me on my first night in Trinidad. T walked slowly down the cobbled pavement glancing furtively from right to left, holding on to my purse yet nourishing an inner hope that some robber might interrupt mv progress so that I could deal with him Yes, fear brought on courage as well as delight.

We passed three days in the island and our desire to move on was perhaps encouraged by the anxiety caused by the rapidly changing schedules of departure.

When at long last we did set sail we were sad to leave the many friends made during our short stay but filled with the rich expectancy of making many more.

About 4 oclock two mornings later the high coastline of Barbados was sighted and before we knew it a police launch was upon us and we had anchored about a mile from the shore. We quickly got through the formality of passports and travelling documents and embarked on a small launch for the pier where our masters Messrs Tudor and Niles welcomed us. Lodgings were provided in the spacious ‘Savoy’ overlooking the bay.

We bad come to Barbados for a purpose and quickly got down to it; a rigid schedule was prepared for us including football and cricket matches against the Windward Islands and Harrison College. Our first football match against the former ended in disaster-we were drubbed 6—1. But this was compen­ sated for by 3—0 win over Harrison's. The cricket matches were both drawn but we had the distinction of leading both the opposing teams on first innings.

Lee 68. f might safely say that we accredited ourselves in our games, but then there was more to the tour than cricket and football and even table tennis, (we lost 2—3 against Y.M.C.A.) there was also the social side at which we also did well.

We can hardly forget the orgy at the Tudors' a week after our arrival—there was victuals of all sorts prepared before our eyes in regal splendour and when someone suggested purchasing a pound of salts on our way home, the suggestion was not greeted with laughter ! We were to spend another glorious night at this very place on our last night in the island and no words of mine c?.n adequately express our appreciation for the services which this good family ai d indeed all

Barbados rendered us. We danced often and merrily and enjoyed perhaps best of all the night at Y.M.P.C. But a change from this could always be found in the pleasant scenery; the roaring surf outside was as constant as breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner; the view from the hills of the well-ordered furrows among fields of sweet potatoes and yams; and above all there was the sea and like Frank Collymore “I must always be remembering the sea.” T remember too an evening spent in St. John’s Churchyard.

A heavy shroud of darkness from trees over­ comes this churchyard so that it appears somewhat eerie but between leaves and branches rays of the sun come grudgingly through and gave one the impression that the shades of the departed do not like the sun; and beneath us again there was the sea and Bathsheba. Yes, I would willingly die if I’d be buried in St. John’s Churchyard among the dear departed souls of yesteryear. Even the prospect of spending a night in the country (my companion got confused at the five crossroads in St. Phillips) did not worry me unduly !—I was near St. John's.

But all good things must come to an end. It was a bright cool afternoon which it pleased us to contrast with the sornbriety of our arrival, when arm in arm we strolled with our dear friends to the pier. The shadows of evening came quickly and at long last with the farewells of our many friends still lingering amongst us we embarked on a small boat and pushed off for the stately ’Nelson’. No adequate diction of mine can express this scene. Each has a story to tell. And as the boat pushed off in the cool evening breezes Ronnie was observed to dip his hands in the water and bathe his already tearful eyes and Mike a veritable Ahasuerus, (a Biblical King who was in love with the fair Esther), was seen to wave a sorrowful farewell to his Biblical counterpart standing under a solitary tree; and Squeaky was heard to mutter “to say goodbye is to die a little”; and Sir Beats was heard to say “Alas for me, Alas for home !” and Leo’s tears could not be seen because his eyes were so small; (in this company the present writer alone was able to keep his wits about him and could therefore give as unbiased a judgment as a historian !) Our masters presented that air which is the virtue of the saner counsels of age and experience, but the junior master was perhaps a trifle sorrowful.

Ah ! wre were leaving Little England. The beauty of the place had set a store on the affections; the charm of the inhabitants had disarmed the judgment Scarce a word was said, scarce a thought answered and even a suggestion to cut Squeaky’s already flourishing crop of hair was luke-warmly received.

The night passed swiftly and only four tourists were in a fit condition to tread on St. Vincent—Mr. Archer, Owen, Beaton and 1. In the evening we docked in Grenada and some of the members of the Windward team entertained us. We went on a long drive up a winding mountain road to lake Grand Etang, a volcanic lake whose depth has not been plumbed. Leo and Ronnie went canoeing, but not for long, for a sumptuous meal was served at the Grenada Boys School. Wight Cup Cricket. ( his year we were represented in the Wight Cup Competition by an entirely new team which was considered to have great potential strength. The team showed by it performance that it was as good as any Wight Cup team to repre­ sent the school in former years, and we have had some creditable individual performances.

We lost the first match of the season outright to the Volunteers. Batting first we could muster only 51 to which the Volunteer’s replied with 136. R. Moore taking 4 wickets for 48 runs and H. Von Eeden 3 for 28. In our second innings we made 84.

We conceded first innings points to Bookers Sports Club making 91 runs in the first innings to which they replied with 134. C. V. Lewis taking 5 wickets for 31 runs. In our second innings we made 112.

Playing next against Chinese S.C. we lost on first innings. Taking first knock we put up 121 runs. H. Von Eeden 26, E. L. Clieong 26, B. Isaacs 20.

The Junior League competitions, in which the School XI are entered, started in March of last year and drew to a close in December. This was one of the most successful seasons for the team. As in the previous season, the School XI emerged winners of their section in the Reed League competition without losing a match, having drawn one. We met the winners of the other section, Post Office and Medical Sports Club in a final. This resulted in a 3-0 win for us, thus enabling us to win the Cup for the second time in succession.

After encountering slight opposition in the opening games of the knockout competition for the Narvo Shield, we lost our skipper, W. L Lee, and a few other members. With adequate substitutes, however, we managed to reach the final round. We lost this 4-0 10 Northern Rangers. i his was partly due o the fact that some of the regular >layers were injured and could not t ike the field.

In the Demerara Junior Knockout competition we thought we were heading for a third final, but, unfortunately, we were defeated by our counterparts St. Stanislaus College whj emerged winners of t h . a i p .

This defeat by St. Stanislaus was a bit heightening because we were due to meet them two days later in the semi-final tor the Dias Cup for Inter-Collegiate football. This was a 1-0 victory forTts^j- Phillips doing the necessary, much to the relief of our supporters. \ t the time of writing, plans are being made for the School XI to visit the Berbice High School for the purpose of playing off the final.

The Inter-House football competition took place between April and June of last year. From the outset it was a fight between Percival and Austin Houses.

After a tie on points, a final was played off and Percival came out the victors; The Junior competitions for this year opened on the 16th of April. We have won all our matches so far and appear to be finishing at the top of our section. Most of the members of last season’s team have left school, and so with an almost entirely new team taking the field this season, many practices have been arranged. We must thank Mr. Alexander who has come forward with his knowledge of the game to give our boys a few pointers.

I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the School and particu­ larly last season’s team, to congratulate M. M. Moore who was selected to tour Jamaica earlier this year with the Caribbean team.

INTER-HOUSE FOOTBALL Austin House won every match, both First and Second Division, to gain the Inter-House Football Championship for 1952. Last season Austin lost the final to Percival, but this year she encountered hardly any opposition at all, except from Weston. Her total of 18 points was in fact only one point ahead of Weston. This ascendancy she gained by beating Weston’s First Eleven 4—1 and drawing with her second 2-all.

Among the other Houses, Percival won five matches, drew one, and lost three (11 pts.); Raleigh won none, drew two, lost eight (2 pts.); Durban won one, drew two, lost six (4 pts.); and Pilgrim won four, drew none, lost six (8 pts.). Ten matches were played by each House. The Percival-Durban First Eleven match was abandoned.

Football Characters.

BLACKMAN.—Our goal-keeper who has improved somewhat since he concen­ trated on this position. He is not afraid to punch the ball clear and is quite agile. Should cover off ground shots with his feet and always get his fore­ arms behind the ball when gathering.

BURNETT, D.—A greatly improved player at right back. Can clear with both feet and is a safe tackier. He must now concentrate on positional play.

He, however, has a tendency to relax and this is dangerous.

DALY, D.—A left-back who clears well with the left foot when he has control of the ball. He should try to clear first-time when under pressure. A bit timid for a full-back.

LEE, M. A.—A sticker at right half. He is not spectacular but always seems to get possession of the ball. His trouble is that he hasn’t got enough power to get the ball away.

WONG, G. H.—This player knows how to play his position at left half. He is a hustler who clears well with both feet and keeps worrying his man all the time. Recovers well.

McCONNELL, N.—An eager half-back who holds the ball too long. A bit on the slow side and this puts him in difficulties when distributing. Should recover when beaten.

HAZLEWOOD, A. I.—So far this player has played in every position in the forward line. Lie has a fair shot with the right foot and tries with the left.

Also on the slow side.

SYLVESTER, A.—A right winger who runs too fast to be able to control the ball. When centring the ball he should do so to his men not to the goal.

His play will improve with his confidence.

BACCHUS, D.—Inside right or centre forward. He dribbles well mt tends to overdo it. Has a fair right foot shot but should concentrate on more power.

Can prevent himelf from getting hurt by moving faster. Tends to stray.

PROCTOR, A.—An inside forward with a fair right foot shot. Is learning to control the ball but plays with it too much in the air. He is slow with the result that his passing is faulty. This is also the result of his using the “toe.”

LEE, G. A.—Has a good shot in both feet and so fills any inside position. He has ball control but is a bit slow with the result that his passing is inaccurate at times.

“Empty House ” (by M. A. LEE, VI B.) Stories of ghosts and things pertaining to the supernatural have never im­ pressed me much, and I have always ridiculed those who claim encounters with beings who were not of this earth.

So it was not surprising that persistent rumours concerning the “Haunted House” on Robb Street, aroused my most bitter scorn. But someone was rude enough to suggest that really I was no different from the common horde, and my scoffs were only a pretence at superior wisdom. One thing led to another and the outcome of the argument was that I should spend a week in the “Haunted House”.

1 had no difficulty in establishing myself for my short stay. There was no one to oppose my desire to reside there, the landlord was only too pleased for me to clear the house of its evil reputation and there were no tenants to evict, at least no visible tenants. My brave venture had attracted much atention and on the first night a great crowd collected outside my window, probably hoping to see me in action against unseen agressors. But their vigil proved fruitless and their high hopes were dashed to pieces, for I spent the night without mishap.

Nothing happened until Saturday night. By now the crowd had given up all hope of seeing something worthwhile and no one had bothered to waste time in standing looking up at the window of my bedroom. That day my remarks to those who still clung desperately to their ghosts were particularly biting and I was well pleased with my devastating criticisms. I retired to bed in high fettle.

1 do not know precisely at what hour 1 awoke. A cloud must have obscured the moon, for although it was full, the room was pitch dark. A cold, chilly breeze made the air damp and clinging. I sat up in bed and shivered as the cold breeze blew on me. 1 remained there fully awake listening for I knew not what. All around me was still, not even the scurry of rats or the ticking of a clock broke the death-like silence. Outside I could hear the faint whisper of leaves as they swayed listlessly in the steady wind. At length a gradual lighten­ ing of the darkness told me that the moon was bursting through the clouds.

Soon the moonlight was streaming in through the window, casting an eerie glow over the room. I sat watching those pale shafts of moonlight and as I watched the light seemed to change. No longer was it clear, a thin mist started to appear and it steadily thickened into a dense translucent vapour. For a while this con­ dition remained static and then the vapour began to gather itself together to form a shapeless, indistinct mass. Then it drifted gradually nearer.

1 was unable to move. Petrified 1 stared at this horrible thing advancing gradually on me. It was so near that as I breathed, thin wisps of vapour went floating off into nothingness. Slowly, almost leisurely the mist closed in, until it eventually surrounded me. And now I found it difficult to breathe. I tried desperately to brush aside this suffocating envelope but my frantic efforts were pitifully futile. I knew now that I was fighting for life. I had to break away

or else I would surely die. I fought and struggled on and on, and all the while I grew weaker and weaker. I could feel myself dying slowly. The thought spurred me on to make one last desperate try. It failed, and I knew that the “Grim Reaper” had claimed me for his own. That was my last conscious thought before I finally succumbed and died.

The next day my corpse was discovered and the doctors proclaimed that I had died of suffocation. Today, the “Haunted House” on Robb Street is no more; since my .death the house has been allowed to decay and as long as my name is remembered it will remain unoccupied.

A Senior Mistress of one of our leading Secondary Schools thumbing through the photographs in the Q.C. Magazine murmured admiringly, “My, rather like a Dracula Art Gallery.” Then added thoughtfully, “Wish our journal would be as good !” # “Food”, we understand, is a noun the Gib has never yet declined. # The despondent old gentleman climbed stiffly into a taxicab.

“Where to sir ?” asked the driver, respectfully.

The Year’s Hockey.

The start of the present school year saw a large number of boys taking an interest in hockey. No fewer than fifty boys handed in their names with tne intention of playing the game regularly. There is a limited number of grounds available, and it is only once a week at the most that each boy can play, but in spite of this some boys have ceased to turn up for practice matches. Those who have remained are showing some improvement and the experience some ol them will obtain in this year’s competition will help them immensely in the future.

The Hiram Walker League competition for 1951 was divided into two halves. In the first half, we fared fairly well ending up in fourth position. The second half was, however, abandoned. A team was entered in the knockout competition for the Dare Shield. The team consisted mostly of boys who had just left school, with a few newcomers. We were unfortunate in being put out in the first round.

The League competition for 1952 has just started and the School XI are doing exceedingly well considering the fact that they are a young and inexperi­ enced bunch. Most of the matches have been played off, and from the results we seem to be ending up at the middle as far as club positions go.

Characters.

SINGH, P. A goal-keeper who takes an interest in the game, but should not let’fear get the better of him. He should work on his kicking, and must remember that it is very much safer to use his pads.

ROBERTS, C. A. A much improved player who dears the ball powerfully at right back. Heshould quicken up his pace and so get rid of his hesitancy in tackling. Can improve his stick work.

YHAP, C. Plays at full back and recovers quickly. This player has a tendency to be wild at times with the result that lie puts his goal-keeper in some difficult positions. He clears the ball fairly hard and looks for his men.

CHAN, H. V. A full back who tackles well but should improve his style of clearing and not give “sticks”. He hits the ball hard, but he must remember that he is a full-back and cannot afford to hold the ball too long.

LEE, G. A. An experienced player who can play anywhere in the half-back line. Represented the colony against Trinidad last year. He has very good stick work and can hit the ball hard, at the same time distributing well.

HAZLEWOOD, A. I. An inside right who collects the ball well. He has a fair shot but is a bit slow in his movements. He can develop his stick work of which he will need a lot for his position.

CHIN, W. A. Originally a left-winger now playing at centre forward. A good shot when settled. He must remember that this position calls for a great deal of stick work* and fast shooting. He moves quickly but sometimes he goes in an “off side” position.

FUNG, N. L. An inside left with a fair amount of stick work. He has a good shot, but delays too much when he is in the circle. He should work on the “flick” shot which is very useful to him.

BAIRD, G. M. A fast left winger who has a good eye. He can centre with the reversed stick sometimes. He hits the ball hard and looks lor his men.

His ball control is fairly good but his stick work can do with some improve­ ment.

BACCHUS, N. C. A right winger who takes the game too lightly. Centres fairly well when he does at all. He is fast, but this hampers his ball-control a bit.

"Whither Are We Drifting In The FormationOf Rack! ?"

British Guiana................. Magnificent Province.................. Land of the Six Peoples ! It seems wonderful that six peoples, drawn from so many different sources can live side by side. Magnificent Province.......... But are we worthy of this epithet, which people seem to be overfond of giving us ?

The Constitution Commission which sat here in 1950 and for the earlier part of 1951, stated that they were impressed “with the amity with which all races live side by side.” But are we living in harmony ? What the Commission saw was but a veneer of fellowship among the people. It did not see the racial consciousness which is rearing its ugly head and is threatening the colony’s future progress.

We do not come into contact with the problem at our high-schools, until we reach the school-leaving stage; and even then it is something which is not easily discernible, but which is nevertheless there. I have noticed in my last year at school how race is making itself felt. On the surface, it is not evident but many schoolchums of the lower school have now formed themselves into race groups, into which it is rather difficult to penetrate. For instance the Chinese, they form a circle, into which for a non-Chinese to enter, he must almost divorce himself from his regular friends. Of course their clannishness may be due to the fact they are in the minority and therefore prefer to be aloof.

The formation of Chinese Club along with their natural sportmindedness, has helped to preserve the clannishness. More outsiders should endeavour to break into such circles and get to know their fellow Guianese.

However, the greatest threat to the colony’s progress lies in the rising raceconsciousness of the two major groups—Indian and Africans. The Constitution Commission states that in “America a medley of races has not proved to be any barrier to the emergence of great and powerful nations”. But in America, unlike here, there were no two predominant races, in almost equal numbers vying with each other for political supremacy. In Canada, however, the French and English settlers remained apart only as long as emotional feeling blinded them to the benefit of a unified Canada and from 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act a United Canada has progressed steadily. It is in­ deed a distressing thought; that these two peoples should be at enmity with each other and unless some effort is made to arrest the racial feeling violent reper­ cussions may ensue in the near future.

With India gaining self-government the local Indians began to talk of “Mother India”, and there has been an upsurge of racial consciousness among

the Indians. This consciousness has been kept at a high level by the visits of several important Indian personages, not to mention the recent visit of the Indian Cultural Mission, which propagated Indian life and Indian culture thus carrying the Indians nearer to “Mother India”.

The case for the African is due no doubt to the fear that the other major group will gain great political power. This in view of the pending new Con­ stitution, which will place more power into the hands of more people, has put a scare into the Africans. Their leaders realizing that the Indians are now coming into their own have got the “wind up”. Now there has always been considerably strong Indian unity whereas the Africans are divided among them­ selves—their trouble is shade of skin. The leaders’ first essay to unite them was in the form of the visit of a disputed Nigerian King. This was a success to a certain extent. The League of Coloured Peoples also increased its activities a great deal, and what was once a sort of association is nearly a political party.

Recently there has been the latest enterprise—the Ethiopian Coptic Archbishop.

Just the fact that a branch of the Ethiopian Church has been founded, illustrates the trend of affairs. All this upsurging of race-consciousness will end only one way. The pitting of race against race will lead the colony onto the hot-bed of racial prejudice which South Africa now is.

A fact which cannot be over stressed or too often mentioned is that we are no longer Africans or Indians but Guianese. As far as all this nonsense about the “Pan-African” scheme is concerned, sensible people should realize that the Afro-Guianese is not an African. The real African and the West Indian think differently. As a matter of fact Africans can look down on West Indians as the children of slaves. For the Indians, we accept Pandit Nehru’s statement that they must choose between Indian and their local nationality; (he was speaking of all mixed colonial territories).

Why should my Indian friendships cease as they walk out of the school’s portals ? Most of my Indian friends seem to be swept up into activities in which non-Indians cannot partake. It is indeed a great pity that these friendships die after school, for all these seven long years of being school chums have been wasted. If school is where we learn to live with each other, then there is soinething wrong with our school s system of teaching.

Instead of building a race-consciousness we should do our best to establish a national feeling. It is said that racialism has its roots in economic fear. If this is so then our Government is to blame. Since—especially with the new Constitution—the Government of the colony will devolve on the people more than ever, the answer is in our actions.

The opinions expressed here, you may no doubt be tempted to discard as the philanderings of an adolescent youth. But remember, we the youths of today will be the men of tomorrow; if we appear to sleep, it is because we dream to change the world. I therefore implore right-thinking people to think of themselves, not so much as Chinese, as Portuguese, Indians or Africans but as British Guianese. Divided we shall certainly fall and degrade into one of those countries which have their frequent racial Uprisings.

On the evening of April 23rd at 5.20 two Prefects, walking along the East corridors, overheard sounds of argument coming from Room 17. Listening carefully at the door, they heard talk of ‘comrades...........overthrow ............... comrade............. ass. . . .ass. .. .ination.......... ” This was the beginning of what turned out to be a startling investigation into subversive elements in the school.

In a rapid secret manoeuvre, official agents made a clean sweep of the plotters. Pamphlets, newspapers, propaganda posters,' the Black Book list of Party Members and financial backers, were seized in the security move.

The extent of the damage was already alarming. “The inmates” said one paper, “of Cell 16 are being indoctrinated,'” and propaganda was afoot to “liberate” the “downtroden” of “Cells 17, 18 and 19.” It is hoped that the germ has been stopped, but before the investigations were complete, the two prefects who originally discovered the evil were found bound and gagged in the Sanitary Block.

“Ex-comrade (a significant beginning) Blackout (mot^e significant) was to be hanged by the head (he having hardly any neck) until he crocked. He was then, to be cut down gently as counsel had asked and sent in time to our Ziberian comrades for local consumption.’’

Comrade Blackoff, who had just returned from a rest cure in Ziberia, then fell through his collar and disappeared. The baliffs carried him out, passing under the Red Cross sign “Give your blood freely when the Party needs it.’’

With the rapid changes of modern life, it was inevitable that even the funda­ mentals of Geometry could not escape. It would appear that a general revision of its principles has been agreed on, and boys throughout the school are working towards a New geometry. We here report the progress made to date A Theorem proposes to prove the truth of some self-evident statement.

Theorems are two dimensions in geometry. Each theorem is divided into 90 degrees, each degree into 60 equal minutes, each minute is split into 60 more equal parts — seconds. (IIIB).

A diameter cuts a circle into two indefinite parts.

Short Story by DENYS HAREWOOD

“

Boy”

The Principal looked over, under, around and eventually, through his spectacles at the young man who stood in front of him. Rather an old young man to be found in a Principal's office. He was about twenty-six, in fact.

“Hmm !" said the Principal, picking up a paper weight from his desk and testing its weight thoughtfully. It was a gesture he made several times a day.

The twenty-six year old young man remembered that the last time he had been in this office the Principal had done exactly the same thing.

“Hmm !" said the Principal again.

“Yes, Sir ?" asked the young man.

“Yes. Well. Ah. . . . " continued the Principal, “Ahm !" He paused. “Well, you remember the—ah—circumstances in which you left school......... " The young man remembered them only too well.

“Well,” the Principal resumed," your expulsion was a mistake." added hastily, “As you yourself said all-along."

Then he

The young man remembered that too. He, his father, and his entire family had vigorously protested his innocence when he was expelled from school. He did not speak however, but waited for the Principal to continue.

“Well" began the Principal again. The young man thought that perhaps he should have counted these ‘wells' from the beginning : there must have been a dozen of them so far. Then came another— “Well" the Principal cleared his throat “after ten years the real culprit has confessed. He is a man in a high position now and we can take no steps against him. But we thought we’d make it up to you."

“That's why I’ve asked you up here today with your old school tie and books. The Directors have insisted that you return and finish off the twoweeks of school they denied you when you were expelled from the Fifth Form."

The young man started violently.

“What ?" he exclained.

The Principal repeated his statement while the young man broke into a cold sweat. , “But that isn't necessary" he said when the Principal had finished, “I can’t come back to school now. I’m twenty-six !”

But even as he protested he knew that there was no arguing with the Princi­ pal, he had tried it ten years ago. His father had tried it. His mother had tried it.

“Yes” said his restored headmaster after thirty minutes of one sided argu­ ment, laying his palms on the desk in his usual gesture of finality,” the Board insist that their honour be redeemed. So that's it, I’m afraid. You'll have to come back. Its only for two weeks, Bayer, buck up !”

Bayer left the office as gloomily as he had left it ten years ago. He walked moodily towards the old Five A room. He remembered that last interview.

“I can't imagine i t !” the Principal had said scratching his bristling moustache in indignation. “How you could do a thing like that ! And so late in your school career, too ! It—it—it's just beyond me.”

He had turned and looked out the window then.

“I mean the baseness of it ! Who were you to judge whether you were put in detention fairly ? And then to take it upon yourself to hit a master.” Then he had added with emphasis “To kick him in the rear! It—it—it’s such a dastardly act ! You’ll have to go, young man I. Oh, yes.”

Yes, Bayer remembered the interview very well. All his protests had been in vain. He had merely been standing behind “Old Stokes”, lie had argued.

The boy who had booted him (Bayer would not “sneak” his name) had darted down the stairs.

He chuckled even now as he remembered the incident. certainly deserved that kick.

“Stokes” had

He had reached his old Fifth-Form room, now, and went in. There was a hush among the roomful of boys when he entered. Fie went to the master’s desk and put his books on it.

“Are you a new master?” asked one of the boys—a desperate looking individual with a huge muff.

“Ah—no” answered Bayer self-consciously.

“Ah—is there an empty desk in the room ?”

“Why, yes” said the other “over there.

He was perspiring freely now.

Why ?” he added.

Bayer ignored the inquisitive muff and walked slowly to his desk. Good Grief ! That character (and others like him) would be his school-mate ! He wiped his wet palms in his handkerchief. All the eyes in the room were turned silently on him. He wondered what would happen next.

The desperate looking character with the muff came over to him, chewing gum with slow deliberate movements of his receding—jaw.

‘Took—” he began.

At this point the door opened and a master came in. Bayer was saved. mopped his brow. Soon he would have to wring out the handkerchief. sighed with relief.

Relief was not the emotion he displayed when he saw the master, however.

It was Hutton. Hutton, the Prefect who had made his life a misery during the last two years at school. Hutton, come back out of boyhood nightmares to haunt him again. Hutton, too, who he suspected had witnessed the “Old Stokes’" incident and could have saved him if he wished. He sat down weakly and waited.

Mr. Hutton was in an excellent, happy mood.

He beamed upon the class.

“Boys,” said he almost clapping his hands in delight, “we’ve got a new boy.”

All eyes turned to Bayer.

“Come out here, Bayer let me show—introduce—you to the class-mates.

Come on !’’

Bayer hesitated; but seeing the fates against him he rose slowly and went to the front of the class.

“Ah” exclaimed Mr. Hutton, gratified, “here he is boys ! His name’s Bayer. He’s going to be with us these next two weeks, aren’t you Bayer ?’’

He patted his new pupil patronisingly on the back.

“Now go back to your seat’’ said his master, rubbing his hands, “and let’s get on with the lesson.’’

Bayer walked miserably back to his seat and the period started. He looked at the clock. Hutton had been late and if the lessons still lasted forty minutes, there were only fifteen to go.

“Today,’’ Hutton was saying, “we shall continue with our history of the Mediaeval artists.’’

Bayer breathed a sigh of relief. Only last night he had been reading a magazine article on Michael Angelo. He knew all about Mediaeval artists.

At least Hutton would not be able to embarrass him.

“Now Bayer’’ said Hutton coming straight at him, “can you tell us how Michael.Angelo died ?”

Good heavens !

He hesitated.

That was the one thing the magazine hadn’t mentioned.

“He was excommunicated’’ said a voice.

The class tittered. anything.

Bayer looked around self-consciously.

He hadn't said

“Not quite’’ said Mr. Hutton, gently, “But we understand.’’

He went on with the lesson, glancing at Bayer from time to time. He was apparently trying to give the class the impression that they had a dangerous imbecile in their midst. Eventually he tackled Tus new pupil again—

“By the way, Bayer, you can tell us who Michael Angelo was ?"

Here was Bayer's chance. He would discuss Angelo's talents at length, retrive his tarnished intellect and put Hutton to shame.

“Yes,'' he answered rising with great dignity, “he was a—’’ “Master house-painter" finished a voice surprisingly like his own.

The class roared. Bayer turned around quickly. His old friend with the big muff was sitting behind him and looked up innocently.

“Look here you da—!" he began in exasperation.

“Careful, Bayer !" warned the master Hutton, “no talking in class. forgotten the rules, have you ?"

“But—" Bayer began.

“It’s all right", said his teacher and tormentor, “we understand. Perfectly.

You're nervous. It's your first day at school. All new boys are nervous."

The new boy sat down heavily.

He wiped the perspiration off his face.

“Now, now, Bayer" reprimanded Mr. Hutton gently, when he saw the other using his handkerchief, “you mustn’t take it too hard. I can't bear to see a grown up man cry."

Bayer almost screamed. The other boys did. They were enjoying this hugely.

“However," continued Bayer's erstwhile master, “we will give you another chance. Now tell us what you know of Michael Angelo."

Bayer got up quickly. ing and learned reply.

All was not lost.

There was still chance for a crush­

“Well . . . "he started.

“O, never mind !" said Hutton in fatherly tones, “we shan’t press you.

Never mind".

He gave the impression that he was humouring a child. Bayer’s patience broke.

“Now see here, Hutton—" began the new pupil with heat.

“What !" exclaimed Mr. Hutton losing his fatherly tone, “cheek ! On your first day ! The Principal shall hear about this !"

He gathered up his books quickly and left the room.

The fifth-form boys now lost all control of themselves. Bayer looked around desperately. He could not stay there. He sped for the door.

Hutton was just a few paces down the corridor. He had dropped his chalk.

When Bayer came out of the room he saw the other bending over to pick it up.

Great emotions surged up in Geoffrey Bayer at that moment. Bending over there he saw the Prefect who had made the last two years of his school career a misery; he saw the boy whose refusal to come forward in his defence had caused his expulsion; he saw the man who had made the last fifteen minutes the worst in his life. He did, for a moment think of his unfair expulsion ten years ago, and hesitated. But it was a passing thought.

by MICHAEL I. N. DASH (VA) History is the mighty Tower of Experience, which Time has built amidst the endless field of bygone ages.

-V A N LOON. History is a record of public events, a series of past events, a course of human affairs in lands all over the world. The Greek word istoria suggests “that which we come to know as a result of enquiry—an enquiry into the past.”

Epoch follows epoch and thus we learn of these events. These events might have been for the better or for the worse of mankind; men's minds might have changed during the course of these events, but it is significant that man has pro­ gressed ever since the world was in space.

When we ask ourselves several questions—how do we know that man has progressed ? The answer is to be found in history. For we know that our ancestors used crude stone implements and lived in caves; but after that gradu­ ally came the axe to cut down huge trees and convert the wood into magnificent edifices. Tomorrow something better will be made, man will see some other ways of using the natural resources. Again if someone told his great grand­ father of flying ‘like the fowls of the air' he would have thought that was lunacy, but today such an escapade is possible with the aeroplane.

We may divide history into three main periods—from earliest times to the end of the Roman Empire—Ancient; from the end of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance—Medieval; from Renaissance to yesterday—Modern. From the study of history we learn of the different types of governments that existed, from kingdom to our modern Democracy. As we read of the different countries, we become members of their community, we share their defeats and victories, we learn of their customs, opinions, religions. We find out that they were back­ ward in their methods of handling certain affairs, we exclaim O tempores! O mores! Something reminds us that they knew more, yea much more, than their ancestors.

Travelling through the ages a century becomes a day, we make giant strides and at last we come to the beginning of Time. We picture the blazing mass fall­ ing from the sun and forming earth . . . the appearance of living creatures . . . the advent of man . . . his progress . . . the different ancient empires in all their glory, the end of the Roman Empire . . Elizabeth's Sailors . . . die poet Shakespeare . . . Religious reforms . . . Columbus sailing around the world . . .

Pilgrim Fathers . . . men of political fame . . . Pitt the great orator . . . the indus­ trial Revolution . . . Karl Marx and Das Kapital . . . Churchill . . . Rise of Ger­ many . . . First World War . . . League of Nations . . . Second World War . . .

Atom bomb . . . United Nations . . . Modern inventions.

Thus we see that a study into the past is very interesting and history is not merely a record of facts, but a long continuous story, made interesting by the various changes following different eras.

First of all we had to record the departure of Mr. Cameron-Tudor, last August, so long the backbone of our society. He will indeed be missed very much by all. Under the capable hands, however, of Mr. Hetram, who joined us last September, we are now well on the march forward.

During the period September, 1951—March, 1952, there were eight meetings held. Interest, hitherto sadly lacking, was solicited from younger members and the reaction was spontaneous and commendable. The average attendance, how­ ever, of 45.2 is not to be appiaised since scant attendance at the last meeting in March, considerably lowered it. Members must learn that ardency does not comprise attending only popular meetings.

A THIRD FORMER APPRECIATES

The Uses of a Literary and Debating Society. (by

There can be little doubt that a Debating Society can be of inestimable value to students in secondary schools. A Society of this kind aims at the im­ provement of the educational and cultural standard of students and at the same time prepares them to participate in political activities.

The object of such a Society should be, primarily to get a group of students interested in speech making and discussion of important subjects affecting the general welfare of students. Problems, of local and International interest could be brought up and discussed. In this way diverse opinions may be ascertained and conclusions reached.

A Debating Society need not confine its activities within the narrow mean­ ing of its aim and objects but could invite debate or discussions on subjects such as, Economics, Agriculture, Science, Political and Constitutional matters.

Although our Debating Society is serving a very useful purpose the subjects discussed do not always attract the attention of many of our students, con­ sequently the Society loses the aim for which it was formed. Without casting any aspersions on the officers, the time of our meetings should be fixed to suit the convenience of the majority of students.

Another factor to be borne in mind is the value of personal approach to disinterested students. The tone of the Debate should be such as to make it appear that parliamentary procedure is accepted and no one at any time should be at liberty to impinge upon any rule of procedure.

In concluding I hope that it should be the aim of those responsible to make the Debating Society the training ground of the youths to take their proper place in the future scheme of life.

Weighing In !

A pretty, but rather plump young woman stepped on to the chemist's weighing machine,“"and was shocked at the weight registered. Promptly she slipped off her coat and tried again. The results were still unflattering, so she took off her shoes. Still not satisfied with her weight she abandoned her belt.

But then she discovered she was out of pennies. Without a moment's hesitation the chemist stepped forward.

“Don’t stop now," he volunteered.

“I ’ve got a handful of pennies and they’re all yours."

Night and the City.

By N. C. BACCHUS (VIB) Night falls like a thick swirling curtain upon the busy metropolis, envelop­ ing the towering spires, mighty buildings and rushing humanity in its gloom and silence. As its influence gains sway, people relax from the nerve-racking tension of the day, and all things succumb to the spell of its unfathomable mystery.

It grows later, and one by one, the glimmering lights flicker out, plunging the city deeper into the gloom and blackness of night. The parks which a few hours before were crowded with screaming children and happy lovers, now lie solitary and deserted under the dark blue expanse of the heavens studded with stars, while the wind sobs out her lament among the clustering trees. Like a sleeping animal, the city lies, ever ready to pounce upon the unwary, waiting to engulf in its rapacious maw some helpless person, or to drive the suicide to his horrible doom.

Dishonesty, despair, revelry, debauchery tread arm in arm through the gloomy, vaulted corridors of the night, enmeshing in their dreadful traps, un­ heeding and unrepentant man. A distant church clock proclaims in its deep, sonorous note that midnight has arrived, as the drunkard homeward wends his uncertain way. The music grows louder and faster at the dance halls, and where the stillness of the night is unbroken, except for the occasional hooting of an owl, the wretched beggar clutches his tattered rags closer in restless slumber, or the cautious burglar pauses in his stealthy course, until the footsteps of the Law recede in the distance.

Away in the distance, where the dark waters of the river rush silently in, the gloom, the grey phantoms of fog stretch their ghostly fingers across the lifeless city, and like the wail of a soul in torment comes the long, drawn-out whistle of a steamer. What is this ghastly, awe-inspiring stillness as of Death which holds the city in its spell? This darkness, this mystery, this night, which, careless of shat­ tered hopes, blind to despairing man, pursues her gloomy course, dwarfing with her infinite size the pitiful vanity of man and mocking the puny efforts of the day with her inevitable conquest. The sleeping city rests, unheeding, inert, uncon­ scious.

It is permissible to spank a child if one has a definite end in view. * # # # Minister : So God has sent you two more little brothers, Sally.

Sally : Yes, He knows where the money's coming from, too, I heard Daddy say so.

Three Worlds in Two Hours. (by ARNOLD GIBBONS VIA) It was one of those dull, gloomy afternoons with rain clouds in the distance and a sun, reluctant to admit that his day was done, stood half asleep in the western sky, that I ventured upon three worlds in two hours. There was the world of 14th century Europe in Shaw’s ‘St. Joan’; there was the world of 18th century England in Sheridan’s ‘Rivals’ and the world of oriental magnificence in Siung’s ‘Lady Precious Stream’—all in two hours in the Oswald Parry Half at Bishops’ High School.

In the first play acted—a scene from Shaw’s ‘St. Joan’, we find a patient Joan (Beulah Wong) ably supported by Bertrand de Poulengey (Paula Matthews) trying to convince a resolute Captain Robert de Baudricourt (Phyllis Matthews) of Joan’s supernatural powers. The scene was convincing but was lacking in that decoration which would have contributed so much to give the play a more realistic effect. As it was we saw nothing of the finery and extra­ vagance of the French 14th century theatre. We recognise something of Gothic arch and in the background the battlements of the castle; we would have liked to see some more interior decoration—perhaps a -pair of horns hanging on the walls, or a display of swords hanging cross-wise. Nothing transported us from this world of the 20 th century to that of the 14th but the actors themselves and we thank them for it. I have never seen a more cringing man servant than Dawn Elvis. He was well caluclated to annoy the impetuous Captain.

Yes, Dawn......... found great pleasure in her role and so did the audience.

Captain Robert de Baudricourt (Phyllis Matthews) was as verbose and imperatorial a commander as there ever was but 1 felt that there could have been a more disorderly rumpus which would have given added significance to his final “volte face’’. Joan was tender, meek and lovable and totally deserving of Bertrand de Poulengey’s (Paula Matthews) trust. The latter was perhaps the most masculine of the actresses—tall and stately looking with a sAvord dancing from the waist and with a moustache not unlike Basil Rathbone’s and certainly a credit to the make-up artist; she lived her part. The careless flip of the head while a defiant voice said, “Checkmate”, to a foiled Captain de Baudricourt, was the best touch of all. I shall always remember it.

The Chorus’ (Belle Thorne) unusual appearance on the steps of the stage (an action which lent a family atmosphere to the proceedings) introduced Sheridan’s ‘Rivals’. Whenever I think of Sheridan, I think of the lovable Mrs. Malaprop. I conceive of her as a fat woman with an enormous waist and from whose sides wit enough to tickle the most fastidious taste bursts forth. I was to be disappointed in this picture but nevertheless Barbara Stoby put me out of conceit. I saw a shapely Mrs. Malaprop full of energy, but for all just as humorous. It is true that sometimes she was inclined to race her lines but her all-round performance readily made up for it.

Mrs. Malaprop is desirous of getting a husband for her niece Lydia who she learns is in love with a certain ‘Beverly’. A lover of hers, Sir Antony, advances the claims of his son. Unknown to her however, Captain Absolute, Sir Antony’s son and ‘Beverly’ are one and the same. The third act climaxes in the meeting of the lovers. Such is the tale of the three acts, in brief. Lydia (Joy Harewood) and Captain Absolute (June Singh) were staid throughout. One would have liked to see more hearty greeting for lovers and even their first blissful moment belied their character. Indeed, Captain Absolute hardly looked the gay desperado who had planned an elopement. Sir Antony (Alma Mittelholzer) seems to have grown old young; hers was a simple part and she performed it well. I recognised the shaky voice of old age and seemed to see the eyes twinkle with youth’s anxiety—what with him wanting to marry Lydia if his son refused !

From the world of 18th Century England I was transported to an Eastern world, one which knew of Confucius and the pomp and pageantry of Chinese lords and ladies. Such was ‘Lady Precious Stream’. A Prime Minister (Jean Thomas) is deeply concerned over the refusal of the youngest of his four daughters to allow him the right of choosing a husband for her. At a garden party to which his daughters and their husbands are invited she outwits him but is in turn outwitted and must await her trial on her next birthday. The play was a fashion parade of splendour and magnificence supported by the haunting voice of some oriental nymph in the background. The producer has definitely captured the spirit of the age and I had to pinch myself to see if I was still where I was. The quick rhythmical shuffling of the attendants (Holly Morgan and Marinha Kendall), the charm of the elder sisters (Pamela Tang, Desiree Morgan) and the beauty of Lady Precious Stream, (Shirley Tang) the boisterousness of Wei the Tiger General I shall never forget.

Someone asked me which of the plays I thought best. He will never forget how I looked at him. Now why couldn’t I have enjoyed them without being asked to commit myself on their excellence ? I considered Shaw’s ‘St. Joan’ the best acted. It was an artistic whole. There was inter-relationship between each and every; and then too it was presented in a much more forceful manner. But then of course we are much more akin to the spirit of aggression and enterprise (for such undoubtedly St. Joan was) than one of sedateness and calmness. Then too we saw but one act of St. Joan and the impression was all the more vividly stamped in our minds. To capture the spirit of 18th century England is by no means a trifting task and how far Victoria Elouse succeeded it is difficult to say. Of the production itself, its only defect was that it lacked the finesse of the period. The scenes were not rapt enough. Mrs. Malaprop was the chief attraction and when she failed (as once or twice she did) then something was wanting. That “something” ought to have come from the supporting cast, but it did not. Had the lovers and more especially ‘Captain Absolute’ been more real, had he proved a more enthusiastic wooer in the last scene, Mrs. Malaprop’s folly would have appeared all the more glaring and the scene more intense.

WESTON HOUSE SECURES HONOURS A T

There was fine weather, fair ladies and faultless running at our March Athletic Sports Meeting. The first two conditions were no doubt responsible for the latter. Yet despite the pace of the track, the enthusiastic squeals from the girls, and the keenness of the competition, only one record tumbled. That was when Laurence Taitt in the 120 yards hurdles, snipped i of a second off John Agard’s 1912 open time of 15| seconds.

To a greater extent, perhaps, than any Senior Champion of recent years, Taitt was the hero of the day. Comparatively unknown two years ago (except in the High Jump and Pole Vault events for which he still holds the Under IS records) this athlete was runner-up in the Under 17 division last year. This year he gained a hard-earned two-point ascendancy over Arnold Gibbons, last year’s champion. T aitt’s victories included the 440, 880 and one mile flat races, the 120 yards hurdles, and the Long Jump open; while he placed in the High Jump.

Gibbons won the 100 Yards and the 220, the Cricket Ball, and the Shot Putt— a total of 20 points to Taitt’s 2114 .

Among the younger boys of the Under 13 division, “A” House’s Roland Willock was champ, a position taken in the next division by G. M. Baker, Weston House’s Champion, who overcame all opposition from his Under 15 rivals.

The majority of points for Under 17 hopefuls went the way of D. Burnett of “G” House. But he had to defeat the efforts of Potter and King to assert his supremacy.

The Tugo-war events proved easy victories for Durban (Under 17) and Weston (Open). In both cases the semi-finalist who was forced to “advance to defeat” was Percival House.

A tremendously large field faced the gun in the Old Boys’ Race. Some of them actually survived the firing of it. Others fell by the wayside. But R. C. Bacchus led P. Jonas and LI. Green to the tape followed by a few surviving pairs of panting trix-socks.

Starting the meeting slightly ahead in the Standard and Championship Points, Weston House maintained her lead and won both Shields. Her points totalled 154 and her outstanding runners were G. M. Baker, M. E. Miller and A. R. Sylvester. Austin House was second (140 points) and Percival third (137 points).

Lady Woolley distributed the prizes and trophies at the end of the day.

Congratulating the winners and consoling the losers, she said that she had

enjoyed the afternoon’s sport.

There were rousing cheers for Her Excel­ lency, His Grace the Archbishop, and the other distinguished invitees.

For the success of the day, we must thank the splendid f:rm cf the athletes, and the colour and glamour of the female spectators. Greater gratitude and thanks are extended to the Georgetown Cricket Club for again lending us their ground, to Mr. J. J. He is among the first four in the Colony; his time of 15 secs, for the 110 yds. hurdles compares favourably with that of any 18 year old youngster in any part of the world; also a good high jumper and distance runner of much stamina.

Aquatic Sports, 1952.

Although the weather was not particularly kind, the Aquatic Sports were successfully run off—or should we say swam off ?—on March 27th at the G.F.C. Pool.

Facilities around the bath were not adequate enough to accommodate the entire school and attendance was limited to the competitors themselves. As a result the rest of the school missed the half-days holidays on which the Heats and Finals were swum, and promptly lost interest in the whole swimming pro­ ceedings.

But even without the lacking of a large crowd, competition at the Pool was hot. Percival House, mainly through Jaikaran, Bernard and Taitt, established an early lead on points. This lead she never lost and emerged the Champion with 107 points, far ahead of Austin (79i/ 2 pts.) and Durban (62i/> pts.); while the other three Houses trailed miserably behind.

Jaikaran (A) won the One, Two and Three Lengths Free Style (Open) and the Lond Plunge, placed second in the Diving and third in the One Length Breast Stroke, to win the Victor Ludorum Cup. His total of 25i/ 2 points was a small i/2 point ahead of Kaufman (C) who gained victories in the One, Two and

Oh ! To be in England . . . . (by K. N. MAUDSLEY) Although the month was July and not April I was, like most passengers on the “Gascogne” (called by one Frenchman “Gascon”) delighted to stand on deck and peer through binoculars at the Scilly Isles on that calm sunny morning to which we had looked forward for so long. Five days of rough weather, with ropes running along the decks to aid the walker and fiddles fixed to the tables to aid the eater, had made us yearn for dry land and a steady bed Lazily our ship glided through the calm channel waters. To starboard we watched some fishing smacks and on the port side some ocean bound freighters.

Soon the shipping lane became busier and a troopship began to overhaul us.

Then a submarine crossed closely behind us and as we approached Plymouth Sound we saw a destroyer firing at a target barely two cables distant. More interesting, however, was the school of porpoises which nonchalantly crossed our course, diving gracefully below us, the gleam of their shapely bodies in strong contrast to the dull black hull. At last we dropped anchor and were occupied with tenders, luggage, trains, cars, customs and hotels—and England seemed to be quite oblivious to our excitement.

It is inevitable that after an absence of nearly five years everything should seem different. Changes there were in plenty. Shops, flats and houses were rising on the sites of ruins, buses were newly painted, shop windows w^ere full of goods, the roads were full of cars of every conceivable vintage, and the roads were beautifully smooth.

London was more alive than ever, for foreign visitors were present in droves. Hotels and theatres were booked up for months ahead, thousands of new taxis buzzed around the streets and the Festival was in progress. To many who expected it to be a new Style Empire Exhibition the Festival was a dis­ appointment but I, personally, found much of interest in the various buildings.

The greatest feature of all—the Dome of Discovery—wras without doubt the greatest point of controversy for it was bewildering to the man in the street; but as a compensation there were exhibitions of design, engineering, agriculture and coalmining which were a constant source of attraction to the hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Children, old and young, of course must visit the Zoo at Regent's Park.

There we saw, amongst the huge collection of fauna from all over the world, birds and an Hakouri from British Guiana. Naturally at Christmas a visit to the Circus at Olympia is a “Must” for there can be seen the world’s leading Circus Artistes. Television has come into its own since the war and members of all classes are becoming confirmed viewers—much to the dismay, it must be said, of the teaching profession w?ho only too frequently meet rows of tired, heavy eyes in the morning.

The youth of Britain have today better opportunities than they have eve had and the bright young man in his early twenties may well be the envy o his elders in ten years’ time. There is lull employment in almost every industr and business, although it is noticeable that high taxation is affecting the sale o many luxury articles. Despite rationing the people are far front starving an food in short supply is at least distributed fairly.

There are also some sharp contrasts between schools in Britain and Queen’ A lower percentage of English boys remain in the Sixth Forms and a highe percentage leave at the age of 15, facts which are very disturbing to all educator Education is for the most part free and very selective—but the overall results ar very much the same as in B.G. Now we are back again—and glad to be in harness, refreshed invigorated.

M. A. SEAL-COON (VB) Remembers

The

“Charleston”

isit

The United States training ship Charleston, having a displacement of 2,300 tons, a 25-foot beam, a 14-foot draught, and 329 feet in length, nosed her way over the bar and into Georgetown on Monday, March 10. Her general appear­ ance is one of a fighting lady. Built in 1936, she was the most heavily armed ship of her type except for her sister ship Erie. After the war, the Charleston was handed over to the U.S. Merchant Marine to serve as a training ship. She was stripped of her armament and the only gun on board now is a 6-incher. But it is only used for theoretical work. No firing is actually done although battle stations are practised and directions telegraphed from the gunnery control room.

When the training course is completed the cadets will go into the U.S. Naval Reserve, take their 3rd Mate’s ticket and sign up for a commission.

In the afternoons, the ship was open to the public. I, myself, and a few other interested boys went down to look her over. I asked the lieutenant whether I could go onto the bridge and other places of interest. He told one of the cadets to show me around. . 1 first saw the gun and learned how it was fired. After the projectile has been put in along with a charge of high explosive, the breach is then closed and the charge set off electrically.

Going back along the deck we came to the place from which the aircraft catapult had been taken down after the war, when there was no longer need of a guardian aircraft.

We made our way to the bridge where I noticed the signal-flag box on the port side. There is one flag for each letter of the alphabet; each has its own singular meaning, e.g. “H” (vertical half red, half white) hoisted by itself means ‘I require a pilot’.

Inside the bridge is the conning tower built with 5-inch armour plating, and harbouring the helm, compass and a host of intercom leads, which connect various positions. The helm, instead of being spoked, is just one circular disc.

When there are strong currents, “precision steering” is used. The push of the current is calculated and the helm set to counteract the push.

I was shown how to take a reading with the sextant. Before you can ‘shoot’ the sun it has to be at its zenith. Looking through the telescope you can see two suns. The whole sextant must be adjusted until only the lower sun is visible.

Then slowly push the arm forward until the image (of the sun) is just touching the horizon. The reading can now be taken. From the result your latitude can be calculated. The reading I did was of no use because it was about four o’clock.

Next I saw the gunnery-control room above the bridge. Just in front of it there used to be a 40 mm. gun. The room contains many delicate instruments.

Its armour plating is not very thick though the room is the first target an attack­ ing enemy plane looks for. Without the control room the guns would be practi­ cally useless. Here the position of the target is found out, the range, and eleva­ tion needed, and are telegraphed to the gun crews.

The crow's nest above the gunnery control is the look out. From here I got a good view of the town and the whole length of the ship. But the post has a disadvantage. If the wind happens to be blowing aft, and the engine room boys decide to ‘clean’ out the funnel, all the soot flies out in one black cloud covering the unfortunate occupant of the look-out. Once this happened to my guide and the lieutenant.

Cadet Eagan asked me while I was looking at the funnel, if I knew who Charley Noble was, and told me all about him. When a ‘green’ man has been signed on, the more experienced hands ask him to go and find Charley Noble.

There is no such person on board and the poor fellow is soon frantically hunting high and low. “Charley Noble” is the galley vent, which is inside the funnel.

It got its name from one Captain Charles Noble who insisted on having all the brass-work in there polished. “W. T. Door” is another leg-puller. No story surrounds this name but it means water-tight door.

At 5.30 p.m.,Cadet Eagan had to go on watch. ance and bade him farewell.

During the war, the exploits of this little vessel were very creditable. She accounted for an enemy transport vessel, two enemy aircraft and a submarine.

The sub. had surfaced too near the Charleston for her to bring her guns to bear so she rammed it. In the Pacific a Japanese submarine fired twelve torpedoes at her without success. The Commander of the sub. most probably mistook the Charleston for a cruiser, owing to her armament. The draught of a cruiser is about 23 feet, and the Charleston*s is only 14 feet so all the torpedoes went under­ neath her. Again, the gallant boat took an island in the Pacific by sheer will.

Her crew ran her aground so that all her guns could come to bear, and blasted everything off it.

On the 7 a.m. tide next day, the Charleston put out to sea (piloted by Cadet Leigh under the guidance of a local pilot), headed for Buzzard’s Bay, Massa­ chusetts.

“ Organic Evolution”

CHUNDUN who wrote on the ‘ Importance of the A to m ” If the animals of the present day are arranged in an order proceeding from the simplest, Amoeba, to the most complex, Homo, an existence of inter-relation­ ship would be implied, rather than the thought that they are isolated and unre­ lated. The above conception—termed Organic Evolution—is now generally accepted; the opposite view, that of the fixity of the species is no longer main­ tained by scientists.

THE ANCIENT THEORIES The idea is quite an ancient one. We are unable to believe that organisms can be produced from inanimate matter by Spontaneous Generation—as is shown

by Vergil’s account of the production of “bees” from the decomposing remains of an ox. This idea of the sudden appearance of living organisms is discounted today; for Pasteur showed that no organism arises except as the offspring of pre­ existing organisms.

The idea of a Special Creation, as found in many mythologies, implying that forms of today have been created de novo by an external sphere of influence, as given in the first chapter of Genesis, is also unlikely. Biological facts do not per­ mit the acceptance of this view scientifically.

THE MODERN VIEW OF EVOLUTION We are ignorant of how life arose but accept it. The vast and varied assem­ bly of animals and plants of today is obviously the result of a process which began many millions of years ago. We are familiar with the idea that all mammals are the specialised descendants of an ancestral stock.

This leads us to the modern and usually accepted view of Organic Evolution by which it is argued that life originated many millions of years ago in the form of minute masses of protoplasm whose descendants, by increasing complexity of form and structure, have slowly produced the varied flora and fauna of today.

MAN FROM MONKEY It must not be thought that the present day Protozoa and Algae are the ancestors of present-day Chordates and Flowering Plants, Algae and Protozoa are organisms which have retained their individuality and have not attained the heights reached by the higher types even though they have both evolved for the same number of years. Yet both Protozoa and Mammals may be said to possess common ancestors. Sometimes the statement is made of man being descended from monkey. What is really meant is that man and monkey are both descended from a common ancestor and that for some reason or other the common ancestor evolved to a higher degree in man than in the monkey.

THE HISTORY OF THE SPECIES From Amphibians to Reptiles In the course of evolution there has occurred at certain times an improve­ ment of the construction of the body and correlated with this there has been a kind of radiation with the production of various types of species. Thus on the appearance of the reptiles, there was a distinct advance on the amphibians in that there were not dependent on the water any longer. Their eggs could be laid on dry land and not in the water any longer for tadpoles to develop. The develop­ ment went on in the egg sale from enemies and actually the embryo is surrounded by a fluid so that it could be said that there was a sort of private pond in the egg.

From then a great utilization of the land began. Herbivores were produced; carnivores developed to feed on them. Some developed arboreal tendencies; a few reconquered the sea and successfully competed with the fishes — they became modified accordingly.

From Reptile to Mammals When the great reptiles vanished and mammals became plentiful, there was again an advance — the mammals having a highly organised brain resulting in increased intelligence, and being homoiothermic (warm-blooded), as opposed to the poihilothermic (cold-blooded) animals, e.g. reptiles. This last feature gave them greater interdependence of temperature, for their metabolic activities would not be dependent on climatic conditions.

ISOLATION HELPS ADVANCEMENT Where there has been no competition among different types there has been a tendency for the species present to become more advanced. There is evidence of this in Australia. Before that vast land continent was cut off the entherian mammals had not become predominant and the marsupials were highest. At this time Australia became detached and there the marsupials were free to continue the evolution undisturbed, because the entherian mammals, which were now coming into the ascendant in Europe and Asia and had overrun the marsupials there, were unable to cross the sea and give competition to the marsupials.

It is just as well perhaps that there are various ways of obtaining a living in the world, and as soon as an advance is made, the new types produce new species more specialised for the particular mode which in the course of time conquer out the older types.

De LAMARR’S THEORY The acceptance of the fact of evolution brings us to the question of how it was effected in the natural world. Jean Baptiste de Lamark postulated that if to meet the needs of the environment and mode of life certain structures were put to unusual activity, these structures became modified to meet the new condi* tions. Similarly structures not used developed less and in the course of time

were lort to the organism. Both of these conditions were heritable. His concept)c ns are known as the ‘law of use and disuse' and the ‘transmission of acquired characters.’ Though this hypothesis provides an explanation for changing existing structures the inheritance of the acquired characters has not been proved experimentally so that these ideas are regarded as being unsatis­ factory.

THE THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION: DARWIN AND WALLACE Darwin and Wallace are responsible for a solution with their theory of natural selection. Briefly the theory states (1) there is a struggle for existence; (2) animals vary (3) as a result natural selection takes place and only the fittest survive. In the struggle for existence the animal with swiftest movement, more highly developed brain, protective colour, power to withstand heat and cold is enabled to exist to breeding age and hand on its special attributes to posterity.

And here Darwin’s theory of sexual selection enters the picture.

Males compete for females.

Those with greater strength, better weapons, more striking adornments would be more successful. In this way use­ ful variations will be perpetuated and in the course of time strengthen while those less advantageous would disappear.

THE GIRAFFE’S NECK-AS EXPLAINED BY LAMARR AND DARWIN Let us explain the neck of the giraffe under the above two theories.

According to Lamark it becomes progressively longer as the result of successive generations, of giraffes in order to reach high foliage successfully. It assumes the inheritance of the increase in length of the neck. Darwin however says that the length of the giraffes’ necks has varied. Those with longer necks would read) the foliage denied to those with shorter necks. In this competition lor food nature selects the longer and the shorter necked ones die out for lack of food. Thus natural selection acting over long periods of time, has perpetuated those with the longest necks.

OBJECTIONS TO “NATURAL SELECTION” Johannsen almost discredited Natural Selection when he showed that there was the same range of variation among all the progeny of a variant as in the original generation and that continuous variations on which Darwin depended were not heritable. De Vries with his theory of mutations—dis­ continuous variations—come to the rescue. These were heritable and diverged widely from the original character. Thus variations could arise in the form of \ a sport if the new form possesses characteristics which prove advantageous over the original; thus giving it a chance to survive and perpetuate its race. The. chief objections to this theory are: ( 1 ) mutations are very rare; (2 ) they are trivial, controlling only small details of colour-pattern or small anatomical differ­ ences (3) they very frequently are seen to have a bad effect. However in the struggle for existence bad mutations would be eliminated; those of adaptiqnal advantage would survive. On the other hand the bad mutations may remit in and be slowly spread but, by the timely action of other genes, become recessive

BUT DARWIN'S THEORY SUPREME All available evidence shows that natural selection operates in nature and the fact that different forms may be produced by selection is evinced from arti­ ficial selection. Heritable mutations also overcomes the difficidty of small variations. Also a struggle for existence appears indisputable and the harmony of nature is merely false covering of a war between different species and mem­ bers of the same species for food to live and carry out their vital activities.

Thus the Darwinian theory modified by the discoveries of genetics is the principal theory of the mechanism of evolution in biological investigations to­ day. Its great merits account for a number of observations and paves the way for further examination of apparent exceptions.

It is open to criticism from philosophers and others who advance other theories, not contradicting it, but passing beyond its range. They offer theories by which some creative mind seeks to realize itself through evolution or creates other intelligent beings for its own sake. They are ancient and respectable, but being metaphysical cannot be investigated scientifically.

BOXING!!

(by KING, D. E. W. IV A) During the present term, a marked interest in boxing among the juniors is being evinced. Boxing in Queen’s College although very popular, has never become an organised sport. The school gloves were only used when some prelect found two boys engaged in a regular rough and tumble with everything allowed; and even then, only if the prefect had time to spare in the afternoon.

On these occasions there were on an average about five bouts despite the fact that only the contestants of the first bout had real grounds for a grievance against each other.

The benefits derived from boxing are many. One learns to be keen-witted, swift-footed, supple, sure of eye and if those first four fail to take defeat with a smile. One can learn much in about two rounds of really tough boxing. The angrier you get, the tougher the fight becomes for you. There are many boys in Queen’s College who would benefit from such an experience.

But unfortunately, because of too great an interest, boxing can­ not be accepted as a regular, organised sport. One cannot help wondering that if fewer boys were interested, would boxing have been rejected then because of too little interest ? It is very difficult for a boy to see how too great an interest in boxing, can provide a sound reason for the rejection of organised boxing.

Surely this interest can be controlled by—let’s say—allowing a form to select its champions whom they desire to represent them ? A yearly competition among1 the forms would be highly interesting, providing everyone with the keenest excitement and pleasure.

Scout Notes During the past year. Scouting has improved immensely in the colony. The reason for this is probably the recent visit of the chief Scout Lord Rowallan early this year. Last year, our troop consisted of about twenty active scouts due to the ceaseless efforts of Mr. Cameron Tudor, Ph.D., who nursed the little flame which was the troop into a strong fire.

Late last year, the troop had to bid goodbye to Mr. Tudor. Three other scouts left us for the U.S., Canada and Great Britain. "They are Richard Santos, Alan Galbraith and Ken Anderson.

After Mr. Tudor’s departure, the troop was handed over to Mr. Reginald Butler, whose untiring efforts have made the troop what it is today. Presently, we boast one of the finest and best dens in the West Indian area. The troop

Ernest M. Miller and Ivor R. khas a total of about 40, with two Kin«° Scouts Phillips. This is the highest rank a scout can attain. We also have eleven scouts with the under 15 scout cord which is the highest award under 15. They are P.L.’s Reginald Pairaudeau, Michael Osborne, John G. Lee, Colin K. Franker, Jim Holder, Michael Too-Chung, Joseph Holder: P.S.’s Richard Fields, Norris Franker, Edward Gordon and Michael Gray.

During last year, we gained the greatest number of proficiency badges in the colony, a total of 107. Other activities included the Armistice Day Parade, Youth Sunday Rally and Empire Day Parade, at which we had the^

largest number of scouts. We collected a fair sum during Bob-a-job week, and assisted the Y.M.C.A. at their annual May Day Fair.

Before the Colony Commissioner Mr. John Durey left these shores, he visited us, and was loud in his praises towards us.

“Thanks” badges were presented to Mr. Cameron Tudor and Mrs. Kerry for yeoman service to the troop, for a number of years.

Early in March this year, Cupid intervened and S.M. Butler was joined in Holy Matrimony. The troop joins in wishing him all the best for future happiness and success.

Mr. IT Hussein was appointed as A.S.M., and we have made much progress with his help. The other A.S.M.’s are Clarke, Kerry and Linton.

We have to welcome back into our troop, Mr. C. E. Barker who has recently been appointed as G.S.M. Seven patrols were formed with the inclusion of a senior Patrol for boys over 15.

At the recent inter-patrol competition, the Rattlesnakes emerged winners, due to the capable leadership of P.L. Reginald Pairaudeau.

The work done by the troop during the past year, has been most creditable, and we hope to do much better in the years to come.

L. Robinson while in the Pack was one of the first boys in the Colo gain the Leaping Wolf Badge, Most welcome news to the Pack during the year is the recent appointmen of Mr. C. E. Barker as Group Scoutmaster. The Pack was run during the yea by the A.C.M. (Bagheera).

The Akela Trophy, a Silver Cup offered for the first time in April 1951 for Inter-Pack Athletic Competition, was won by Pack 27 and in celebration c cricket match was played against Pack 1—this match was finished off with c feed during which the boys were treated to Cider in their Cup. The Cider was kindly donated by G.S.M. Waldron of Group 22, C.Y.O.

In May 1952, the Pack again secured the Cup. The occasion was celebrate* this year by a weekend Camp in New Amsterdam from 30th May to 2nd June at which the Cubs thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

A friendly game of Cricket was played against Pack 12 on 29th March 1952, which Pack 27 won easily.

The Pack took part in Empire Day Parade at Government House in 195’ and 1952,-an spite of rain the 1952 attendance was quite good.

The Pack went on a day’s outing to Plaisance on 29th April, 1951, wher they took their Observer Badge, and on 19th April, 1952, they went to Hop* Beach.

The Pack took part in the Colony Wolf Cub Celebrations in May 1951 during which they collected Magazines in Queenstown for the Red Cross, an* attended a Council Eire at the Y.M.C.A. At the close of Celebrations whicl lasted a week, 7 O.C. Cubs together with Cubs from 3 other Packs camped a Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, at Captain Coghlan’s House.

In June 1951 there was a farewell function in honour of Mr. Camerof Tudor, G.S.M. who was given a thanks Badge for his service to the Group, prioi to his departure from the Colony. This function combined Going-Over Cerj mony for 10 Cubs, Feed Up, and Camp Fire.

During the course of the Year 20 tenderpads were admitted and investee and 10 Cubs went over to the Troop.

During the year the Cubs did much Badge work and 2 more Cubs are noj ready for their Leaping Wolf Badge, the Senior Sixer, M. Hendricks, being on and H. Mootoo the other.

The Cubs helped at the Cub Fair in July, 1951, and took part in the display in honour of the Chief Scout, Lord Rowallan in February, 1952.

The Cubs had their Xmas Feed in December 1951.

Bagheera hereby extends thanks to A.C.M. Carter and S.M. Butler, who ably assisted in running the Pack during the year.

Chess In Queen’s. (by KING, D. E. W. IV A) During the last two years interest in Chess in Queen’s College has been fluctuating alarmingly. Two years ago Mr. E. O. Pilgrim instructed the then III A and III B in the moves of the Chess pieces and in some basic openings.

This effort of Mr. Pilgrim along with some events which followed, placed chess well before the notice of Queen’s College.

About a year ago, Senor Rene Pratt, a chessmaster, paid a visit to the Colony. He provided the stimulus for an all round interest in Chess. Senor Pratt visited Queen’s College, which, because of Mr. Pilgrim’s exertions, was able to produce a fair amount of players for his simultaneous display. It was during Senor Pratt’s visit that the genius of H. V. Chan made itself apparent. On Senor Pratt’s departure Chan gave his own simultaneous exhibition with marked success. Interest in chess had then so much improved that a Chess Club was formed and monitors had to be appointed to control the rush for Chess sets at 3.00 p.m.

During the following term Chess was again on the decline. One of the reasons was that IV A and IV Al l , who had displayed a great interest in Chess had become the V A and V B with their examinations looming ahead, and con­ sequently, had no time for the game. No attempt was made to teach the younger boys (II A, III A, III B), this fascinating game. The Chess Club was never revived and all headway gained during Mr. Pratt’s visit was lost. Chan arranged a Junior and Senior Chess competition, but his ardour however, was soon quenched by the general unresponsiveness of the school. Chess was on the rocks again.

After the departure of Mr. H. O. Barker, no other master had come for­ ward to take his place, and up to the present time, the masters had remained completely aloof save Mr. Pilgrim. At the old school, Mr. T. Richmond and Mr. Cameron would take part in games now and then. Minus these incidents one could well have come to the conclusion, that the staff could not play Chess.

CHESS IS RAPIDLY DYING OUT. There still are many boys in this school who can play the game. Some interest is being shown by the present IV A, but soon they will become the Fifth with their examinations a year away.

Then what ?

They tell us that Bones has not yet completed his “Theories of Courting’’, and his brilliant technicolour afternoon footwear is part oi an experiment to be related in the chapter “How To Make Her Think You Need A Mother’’. *

Sum m er Term 195? (continued) The activities this term consisted mainly of Guard and Sentn drill, and rehearsals for the King's Birthday Parade.

A detachment of cadets attended this parade with rifles, and finished the march in good style in spite of a torrential downpour.

On June 27th, Lt. Maudsley, our O.C., went on leave to England, and Lt. Me Mahon assumed command of the corps during his absence.

During the latter half of this term there were three promotions : Cpl. Kerry was promoted to Company Quartermaster Sergeant, L/Cpl. Chin to Corporal and Colt. Rickford to Lance-Corporal. i Our annual camp was held at Atkinson Field, as it was in 1950, from Thurs­ day 16th to Friday 24th August, and Lt. McMahon and Asst. Supt. Isaacs (B.C. Police)—formerly Capt. Isaacs, B.G.V.F.—were in charge. The camp was a great success due mainly to Lt. McMahon, Asst. Supt. Isaacs and C.Q.M.S. Kerry who put a lot of hard work into the organisation and running of the camp; to Sgt. Success of the B.G.V.F. who, along with the officers, helped to maintain a proper “military atmosphere”, and to Mr. Braithwaite (our cook) who kept our stomachs filled.

Out of a total of forty-seven cadets and N.C.O.’s, thirty-six attended camp, and everyone enjoyed himself immensely. There were periods of hard work, but there were also periods of relaxation in which we either played games (indoor and outdoor) or refreshed ourselves in the well-stocked canteen.

The main body of cadets left Georgetown at 08.15 hrs. on Thursday 16th August, by the R.H. Carr, (a fatigue party left by lorry at about the same time) and arrived at the base at 12.10 hrs. We then had to march about a mile to our barracks, and the rest of the day was spent in cleaning the barracks and cookhouse, -arranging cots, unloading stores, etc.

At camp we were divided into four sections: No. 1 under Cpl. Wishart and L/Cpl. Rickford, No. 2 under Cpl. Isaacs and L/Cpl. Holder, No. 3 under Cpls. Wiltshire and Mitchell and No. 4 under Cpl. Chan and L/Cpl. Perry.

Sections 1 and 2 comprised No. 1 platoon under Sgt. Clarke, while the other two sections comprised platoon 2 under Sgt. Jaikaran. C.Q.M.S. Kerry and C.S.M. Nurse were supernumerary.

Three promotions occurred during the camp: L/Cp'ls. Isaacs and Mitchell were promoted to Corporals, and Celt, Perry to Lance-Corporal.
