This issue of the School Magazine, it was anticipated, would have been the first number to be published after the School had moved into its new premises at Thomas Lands. However, the finishing stages at the new building have taken somewhat longer than was estimated so that we still find ourselves at Brickdam. A little more patience and then we shall be safely installed in our new home during the early weeks of the coming summer holidays; the moving is going to be quite an arduous business and I know I can count on the services of many senior boys to help us.

It is time therefore, to say good-bye to our old building which has housed the School for over thirty years. To many the associations with that building will remain a life-long memory, and it will be with more than a tinge of regret that we close up the doors for the last time. Inadequate as it has been in area and facilities for some years now, it has rendered good service to the youth of the Colony. W e will hope that the structure, renovated and modified to suit its new purpose, will have many more years of useful life.

Well, we did not quite manage to pull off the Guiana Scholarship last year; we made a good shot at it and Chan fully deserved our congratulations — and, I think, our commisserations — in coming out second on the list for two years running.

However, I do not think we can complain when we total up the number of scholarships gained by our boys during the year; there is certainly a merry little band of Old Boys at the Univer­ sity College of the West Indies and four more are joining them in October next, three of them having gained scholarships.

Let us hope that the Sixth Formers have done full justice to themselves in the G.C.E. Examination, and let us wish the Fifth Formers good luck in the Joint Board Examination now just over; may their earnest efforts be duly rewarded!

Good luck to this issue; I hope the Editors will feel that their efforts are duly appreciated.

E D IT O R IA L ONCE AGAIN, the time for another issue of the school magazine has come around, and, like all the other editors who have gone before us, we feel that it would hardly do to edit a magazine without adding something of our own in the form of an editorial.

At this time, the subject that comes mosj- naturally' to oui minds is the "new school". For years, mention has been made of the "new school" in our conversation, our "Lictors" and our magazines. At last, all our hopes and prayers are about to be realized. The imposing building at Longden Park is now having the finishing touches put on it and it is definite that the "new school" will house the boys and officials of Queen's College from September, 1951.

Not only is the building a large and imposing one, but the facilities lor learning which it affords are many— the laboratories in particular, are magnificent. It will be possible, too, when we move over in September, to provide meals for those boys who live far from the school and the Principal has advanced the excellent idea that as many boys as possible should take advantage of this opportunity to have a meai together as one great family.

With regard to this publication of the "Queen's College Magazine", we would like to thank all those who have assisted, in any way, to produce it. We want those boys who sent in contributions to know that we appreciate their readiness to co-operate very much indeed and we trusf Nat those whose efforts we have not made use of here will not be dis­ couraged from contributing to the school magazine in the future. If we had enough space to publish ail your contributions we would hove done so. Our thanks are also due to our masters who were always willing to help and advise, and to the "Magazine Staff" who have worked hard together to turn out what, we hope, is a still bigger and better magazine.

Retrospect

The school year 1950-51 is the last we shall spend in our old buildings, and it is very fitting that we should end our career here on a successful note. The list of achievements is long, but there are a few disappointments to keep our joy within bounds.

During the year we have completed our first season in first class cricket and have made a start in our second. From our showing we have proved ourselves good enough to have been admitted to play first class cricket. Mr. Richmond recorded the first century for the School in Case Cup cricket, while Gibbons was the first batsman in the Colony to score a century this season. Four members of the team were called to practice for the Colony XI, and one of them, Jackman, was selected to accompany the team to Jamaica. The House Cricket competition was won by Pilgrim House.

The year’s football has been quite surprising. In the first place the School XI, playing unbeaten, won the Reed Cup in the Junior League. It has been a long time since the school won one of the Junior Cups. Then the same team succeeded in losing to St. Stanislaus in the Dias Cup semi­ final. In the House Football competition Austin House and PercivaJ House had a hard fight, but eventually Austin came out on top.

The hockey Spotlight turns onto G. A. Lee, who has been selected as a member of the Colony team to tour Trinidad this year. At 16, he is prob­ ably the youngest member ever to have been selected for the team.

The School XI gave some good performances thus season and ended up fifth in the Hiram Walker League.

In the other departments of sports PercivaJ House carried off Athletic honours and tied with D’Urban for first place in ac juatic sports.

One of the chief disappointments was that a Queen’s College boy was not the 1950 Guiana Scholar. Nevertheless, of the five that reached scholar­ ship standard four were Q.C. boys. We can say that we have had our fill of scholarships and exhibitions this year. Lam has been awarded a scholarship, and R. A. Lee and J. Munroe exhibitions, all tenable at the University College of the West Indies. Two other boys Glasford and Nicholson are likely to be awarded scholarships for sugar chemistry by Bookers.

Let us now turn to our masters. The honour of O.B.E. has been con­ ferred on the Principal, Capt. H. Nobbs. The magazine takes this oppor­ tunity of extending congratulations to him. Messrs. W. H. Smith and A. P. B. Richmond have taken leave of us, and we have Mr. G.E. T. Moore to help fill the breach. The return of Mr. Chunilall from leave has also helped to ease.the situation Next term the school will be moving over to the new buildings at Thomas Lands. I hope that they will do nothing to disgrace them, but that they will observe the traditions we have upheld in our old buildings.

We are exceedingly proud as we congratulate Capt.

Howard Nofobs, M.Sc., F.R.I.C., Principal of Queen’s College since 1931, on his being made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the New Year’s Day Honours List. It was the first time in the history of the Colony that a Headmaster has been thus honoured.

He has had a distinguished career. Educated at Brockley County School and the University College, London, where he gained an M.Sc., he later became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry. During World War I he saw service with the 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment and the Royal Engineers in France and has been demobilised with the rank of Captain.

1951 will be Captain Nobb’s twentieth year as Principal of Queen’s College. During his entire headmastership he has always shown that he has had the School’s interests at heart.

Before reporting on our activities during the past year, we must take this opportunity of welcoming back Mr. Q. M. S. Richmond, a former captain of this House. He now joins us in the capacity of a House Master and he can be assured of the whole-hearted co-operation and support of every member of the House.

The past year has been a very successful one for Percival House: we tied with D’Urban House to be joint winners of the Swimming Shield and we annexed the Athletic Shield for the second year running. In the Cricket Competition which was played in two sections we were indeed unfortunate in securing one point less than Pilgrim House, who emerged winners of our section, and also winners of the competition by defeating Weston House in a keenly contested final. The House takes this opportunity of con­ gratulating the winners.

The next major event was the Aquatic Sports and it is here that we fully avenged our previous defeat by being crowned Joint Champion House.

Jaikaran, Taitt and the Bernard brothers were the outstanding swimmers for the House.

Next came the Athletic Sports and it is here that the fury of the “ Red Men” swept all before them. The sports meeting was a crushing victory for Percival House and once again we had the Senior Champion in our midst. It must be here noted that the House had the unique distinction of having no representatives in the Under 13 division which does not augur too well for the future of the House. It is not too late to buck up youngsters. ^ In the football competition which is presently being played we are doing well and we are making a determined effort to win this shied this yeaf.

Our Xmas Social was a huge success and everyone enjoyed himself immensely as there was much to eat and drink. The entertainment rose to new levels which must be maintained and surpassed if possible, but must never be allowed to return to that served up on a few previous occasions.

In concluding, I must wish the House all of the very best for its new life in the new Queen’s College which opens this year. I am certain that the House spirit, as we know it today, will continue to prevail within the new walls and Percival House will forever be what you have made it — a shining example for all to follow.

Let us first of all take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Beckles back to us, and to thank Mr. Persaud who acted as house-master for his wholehearted interest in the activities of the house.

Our achievements during the last two years have not been extensive or spectacular, but the events of the last year have marked the beginning of a gradual ascent.

In cricket we were not very successful. The tide, however, turned when Rhodes — at that time House Captain — gained the Victor Ludorum in the aquatic sports and was thus largely responsible for our close second.

His titanic effort won glory for the House. Since then a keener interest has been exhibited especially amongst the younger boys. In the athletics we put up a valiant struggle against many odds. Special mention must be made of Daly, our athletic champion, and of Savory who, in the relay race, won his spurs when he came second in a neck-to-neck sprint.

We also extend our heartiest congratulations to Rupert Lee on gaining the Gilchrist Scholarship to the West Indian University and we all wish him and the other old Raleigh House boys success in their further studies.

In concluding, I hope that the House will be awakened to the realiza­ tion that there still exists amidst us that inextinguishable torch. Let us fan the flame that it might once more burn with its original brilliance.

The past year has not been a bad year for the House — nor has it been a very good one. We succeeded in winning only one of the four inter-House competitions. This year we must win at least two.

In the House Football competition, our X I’s secured easy victories and put us into the Final against Percival House. In the final Percival gave us quite a run, but after two drawn games our worth made itself felt and we emerged victors.

At cricket we could not muster enough points to qualify for the Final, and so we had to give up hopes for winning the cup. The matches showed that the future of the House at cricket is quite bright.

The same can be said for swimming. In the last swimming sports we were a very close third, only a few points standing between us and the first position. We owe our success to our young swimmers Kaufmann (under 15), Lee G. A. (under 17) and Cossou (under 13). I might mention that some of the times Kaufmann returned were better than those in the Open and Under 17 divisions.

From third in swimming we dropped to last place in athletics. just were not an athletic House this year.

Although we have not excelled at the various Inter-House competi­ tions, this year it is encouraging to see that in almost every case we have shown an improvement over last year's performances. We are far from our goal, but the perseverance and determination displayed by\ many of our members have brought us one step closer.

Before referring to our activity during the past year may I mention that “ D” House wishes to thank Mr. R. E. Jackson for his assistance during the absence of Mr. Chunnilall.

At the Inter-House Cricket Competition our performance was rather disappointing. Blackman is worthy of special mention for his contribu­ tion to the House. In Football, although our 1st XI team was outplayed, our second displayed fine fighting spirit against strong opposition to win two and draw two of their matches. At the Aquatic Competition, D'Urban shared first place with Percival House after placing second to the same House last year. In this field Feinmesser was the outstanding D'Urban character. In Athletics again we jumped up one place. The team spirit shown by our younger members was much improved.

On the educational side we have done very well. At the School Certificate Examination we had many successes with 75% Matriculants, H. V. Chan topping them all with seven distinctions and one credit to win the Percival Scholarship. At the Higher School Certificate all of the five candidates from D’Urban House were successful, W. R. Chan and S. M. K. Insanally being recommended for the B.G. Scholarship in which they placed second and fourth respectively. Last year W. R. Chan obtained one of the U.C.W.I. Science Scholarships. This year another of our mem­ bers, J. R. S. Munroe, has won the B.G. Government Exhibition. Such boys have been a great credit to the school and to D’Urban House.

Undoubtedly, the dominating force behind our progress is the power, inspiration and determination behind the exhorting speeches of Mr. Yansen at House assembly. In conclusion I extend my best wishes to D’Urban House. Remember boys, what we have achieved we must not allow to slip away from us. The past year marked another successful year in the annals of Pilgrim House. It becomes pleasant in the retrospect, especially when we remember that our successes are not attributable to individuals as such but to the combined efforts and excellent team spirit displayed by every member of this House.

SUMMER 1950 TERM: In the various competitions held this term we were, unfortunately, unable to capture any of the shields. We placed 5th in the Football Competition thus losing the shield for the first time — we had won it every year since our inauguration in 1945. It was evident that the three elevens needed much more practice.

In the Aquatic Sports, we also placed 5th. Unhappily there are not many swimmers in our House and our Aquatic Captain Glasford and his team must be complimented on their heroic efforts.

The end of this term saw the departures of: Mr. W. H, Smith, an Assistant House Master, who left the College for the U.K. on a C.D. & W. Scholarship in Agricultural Chemistry; and of our former Captain C. A. W. Deane, and also a number of Seniors. We wish them every success in their future phases of life.

AUTUMN 1950 TERM: We welcomed to the House, Mr. G. R. A. Rawlings, late of “A ” House, as an Assistant House Master, and a number of new boys in the Junior and Senior schools. We hope their stay with us will be long and enjoyable.

The inter-House Cricket Competition was held this term and we carried off the Championship Shield. The three elevens are to be congra­ tulated on the magnificient performance they displayed. Captain of the 3rd XI —* J. J. Ferdinand — is to be praised for making 64 not out, in the “E” v. “A ” 3rd. But, by far, the most interesting match was the final between Pilgrim and Weston. Skipper Gibbons is to be congra­ tulated for his valiant knock of 93. Oh! of course not to be forgotten are

C. S. Pilgrim for his destructive fast bowling, and R. M. Glasford who, having made the winning hit, was 59 not out.

It is worthy of note that Gibbons and Pilgrim were invited to prac­ tise at the Trial matches but were unfortunate in not being selected to tour Jamaica, though Pilgrim bowled exceedingly well in the trials.

Our Annual Xmas House Social — “feed-up” might be a better name — was held at the end of this term. It was a bumper success and the behaviour of the house was beyond reproach. We combined with “ C” and “D” for the entertainment which was of a very high standard and may I thank the Senior members for their kind help and wholehearted co-operation. Our congrats also to those scholars who acquitted them­ selves creditably in the S.C. and H.S.C. exams. — results of which came out this term.

SPRING 1951 TERM: Athletic sports soon followed and again we brought second in both the Athletic and Std. Points Shields. This year we have three champions in our House. R. A. Gibbons shared the Senior Championship with F. E. Mongul of “A ” and also broke 2 of the 3 records broken. H. Green not only won the House Cup but also again carried off the Under 17 Cham­ pionship. Lithe C. H. McGowan again emerged Champ, of the juniors. Special praise must be given too to the Team who won the House Relay, and the Open Tug Team who qualified for the finals.

Here the team spirit of the House was clearly in evidence, and the House Masters are indeed to be praised for their untiring, efforts in helping the boys.

The House also extends its congratulations to R. M. Glasford who has been awarded a Bookers’ Training Scheme Scholarship in Sugar Technology. We wish him all success in his future studies.

SUMMER 1951 TERM: It is indeed sad to learn of the illness of C. S. Pilgrim, Vice-Captain of the House, destructive fast-bowler of the School Case Cup team and goal-keeper of the School Football 1st XI. Most distressing, is it, to hear that even after he has recovered he would be unable to take part in games for sometime. We wish him a speedy recovery.

In concluding, I wish the House all the best for the coming year and urge the members to continue working together with that team spirit and unity which they have developed due to the persistent efforts of Mr. Cameron.

May I take this opportunity also to say “Au Revoir” to the House and also the Principal and other members of the staff.

The past year has been a most successful one for Weston House.

We must thank our youngsters for their fine house spirit and enthusiasm which helped to earn us our victories of the past year.

We must take this opportunity of welcoming our Assistant House Master — Mr. G. E. T. Moore, who joined us last September, and also I. H. D. Harewood, who joined us to help Weston House in +heir fine work of making this House the outstanding House of Queen’s College.

During the last school year we lost Mr. A. Richmond who has left us in order to further his studies. The House wishes him every success.

After emerging champions in our division in the House Cricket Com­ petition, we played Pilgrim House in the final. We were outclassed in the 1st innings, but displayed the fighting spirit of Weston House by fighting back, magnificently, losing in the end by 1 wicket. Thus we had to be contented with being runners-up for the Cricket Shield.

Our cricket captain must be congratulated on his selection to represent the Colony in Jamaica — thus following the steps of our former captain Bruce Pairaudeau. In the future we hope to hear of his being picked and played; we wish him even greater successes.

In Athletics, the House was even more successful. As usual, we piled up a large amount of Standard points and thus had an overwhelming lead. Determined not to be overtaken, we went on to win the Standard Point Shield and were second in the Championship Shield. The winning of the Standard Point Shield required a combined House effort and in that respect is to be considered a greater victory than that of the Cham­ pionship Shield. It was our youngsters who again put in a fine per­ formance.

Owing to the lack of enthusiasm, we were last in the aequatic sports.

I hope that more interest would be shown in swimming and I think that we should start now to build our team for the next sports.

The Inter-House Footbal] Competition is still in progress. At present we are third and the 1st XI must be congratulated for their performance.

It is now left to the 2nd XI to maintain or better ouri position.

In conclusion, I wish that with the sincere effort and co-operation of each member of the House, we may have even greater successes in the coming year and with determination keep up the House’s motto.

Review

The last year has been a most fortunate one — fortunate not so much from a point of actual achievement as a team, but individual ability came in for recognition. It was a long, hard season, commencing with First Class cricket, and then degenerating into the more enthusiastic House competition and rising again to the more serious Inter-Collegiate matches and “Trial” games.

Our first season in “big” cricket Was on the whole successful; no one expected us to win many games in our first venture, but then the object was to profit from our mistakes, and thus gain valuable experience.

The first class season ended, the boys welcomed the transfer to school games with relish. Jackman hit 148 of a total of 204 for Weston against Austin, while skipper Lee of Austin’s hit an adventurous 132 not out of 176.

These knocks were characterised by forceful shots all around the wicket and time and again balls had to be hunted in the nearby grounds. The final between Weston and Pilgrim was a delightful affair: Weston declared on an impaired wicket at 49 for 8 to which Pilgrim replied with 153, skipper Gibbons 93. Faced with a deficit of 104 Weston batted doggedly and scored 189, Jackman 66. Pilgrim required 86 to win and scored 88 for 9, “Mike” Glasford scored the winning hit.

In the Inter-Collegiate semi-final, against St. Stanislaus College, we scored 291 on a turning wicket, Mongul 63, Gibbons 48, Lee 37; they replied with 205 for 6. Thus no decision was gained in this match. In the second match, on a perfect wicket we amassed a total of 453, Jackman delighted with a fluent 191 which broke the record for the highest score in Inter-Collegiate games, Lee 59, Chin 48, Gibbons 24 also returned good scores; our opponents replied with 243 and thus the shadow of mourning which had overcast the school for an entire year was removed — we earned the right to meet Berbice High School in the final.

Four of our players were invited to practise with a view to selection for the Colony’s tour to Jamaica — Pilgrim, Gibbons, Lee, and Jackman who was included in the team. Lee and Gibbons performed creditably, but Pilgrim and Jackman were outstanding indeed. Pilgrim got 13 wickets for 159 runs and was the most successful bowler in the trials. The first half of the present season is ended and we have a total of 6 points: we scored a brilliant 10-wicket victory over Catholic Guild but lost outright to B.G.C.C. in an exciting finish in which the latter team set to score 92 runs in 40 minutes did so with 2 minutes to spare. Robert and Harry Christiani were the offending run-getters. To date we have two centurions for the season. W. I. Lee scored 137 against Chinese, while R. A. Gibbons scored 104 against Catholic Guild . We look forward to a season of hope and promise.

Cricket Characters (by ARNOLD GIBBONS) L. A. JACKMAN: Should cricket be considered a philosophy and cricketers philosophers then Jackman would perhaps belong to the class of the Stoics: seldom he smiles and then only to gratify a fiendish taste for powerful drives, hooks and square-cuts: as diligent a fieldsman as an opening bowler, he had the good fortune to be included in the fourteen who represented the Colony in Jamaica last March.

W. I. LEE is by nature an aggressive left-armed bat who finds favour at No. 4, but he had to subdue himself somewhat as he opened for us last season: he delights “ to nibble” at the new ball early in his innings, but should he survive this trying period, then may heaven help the fielding side: a good cover-point and a sure catch.

R. M. GASLFORD: A most graceful and quick-footed player, as a batsman he is very impetuous and lacks prolonged concentra­ tion: a plucky fieldsman whom rumour says swings the new ball, but up to the time of Press, this has not been confirmed.

W. A. CHIN: A quiet and sedate batsman who has inherited the oriental virtue of perseverance. He dallies not in vicious drives and pulls, but in gentle glides and caressing cuts: his talents as a leg-spinner have been rather neglected by the arrival of R. V. Moore: as a fieldsman, his boot is surer than his hand, his catching is unpredictable but then who would expect Afoo (nickname) to soil his hands.

Mr. T. B. RICHMOND: A great asset both as captain and all-rounder, he has the knack of getting wickets at the right moments. His batting is merrier than his fielding which God knows, is not merry at all.

A. BISHOP is a capable left-handed all-rounder: his batting last year has been quite dependable, his bowling has been equally so, but his chief vice is in serving up too varied an attack. A confident fieldsman.

F. MONGUL is our dependable off-spinner: his length is accurate at all times: a strange batsman who scores runs only in a crisis: a fair fieldsman.

J. PHILLIPS: “ Surprise I see thou art afoot, take what course thou wilt” . These words adequately sums up this newcomer's aptitude: he is as capable a batsman as he is an off-spinner and a fieldsman: his chief weakness is his lack of concentration.

E. B. JOHN: A slow medium swing bowler with admirable length control — his only trouble is lack of variety: a fair fieldsman and a merry No. 11 batsman.

R. V. MOORE: Unparalleled in his slowth, sublime in his laziness, but yet dogged in his perseverance; he is a leg-spinner of much promise, but has not b o w le d often this season: a stren u ou s batsman with p ecu lia r footwork and strokes.

C. S. PILGRIM: Our fastest bowler whom illness has kept out of this season’s cricket: he was called to practise in the recent Jamaica trial matches and was the most successful bowler: however youth had to play second fiddle to old age and experience as the selectors depended upon the “ old brigade” to represent the Colony: tall, lithe and rhythmical in his movements, he has the smoothest run up to the wickets and can work up tremendous pace when he feels like it.

R. A. GIBBONS:—School skipper and wicket-keeper. A sound opening batsman. Not very forceful but is a very orthodox stroke player.

As wicket-keeper he brings off brilliant stumping, but is apt to miss easy ones. Also a useful medium-paced bowler and energetic and capable fieldsman.— (W.I.L.).

(by M. M. MOORE) A very enthusiastic team was selected to represent the college in the Wight Cup, four of our players having some Case Cup experience. Our performance on the whole w.as creditable, and there were many outstand­ ing performances by members of the team., Our first match was against the Chinese, the latter batted first and made 217, in reply we made 215, thus losing by 2 runs. C. Lewis and F. Mongul each secured 4 wkts. for 75 runs and W. I. Lee made 137.

Then we played the C.Y.O. we lost outright to a more experienced side.

In the 1st innings we made 91, M. Moore 30; the C.Y.O. made 120, R. Lee secured 4 wkts. for 27 runs, in the 2nd innings we made 64, G. Lee 22 and R. Bacchus 20; the C.Y.O. made 49 for 1 to win outright.

In our next match against the B.G.C.C., we made 135 in the 1st innings, G. Lee 75, and the B.G.C.C. replied with 130. R. Lee got 6 wkts. for 43 runs. In our 2nd innings we made 121 for 2 (declared), M, Moore 54 not out, G. Lee 30, G. Baird 18 not out. In trying to gain an outright victory, we took 5 of the opposing team’s wickets for 75 runs, M. Moore 3 for 17.

We had to be satisfied with a 1st innings victory.

When we played the St. Stanislaus College in our next match, we lost outright. Batting first we made 74, M. Moore 17; the Saints replied with 170; we were then faced with a large amount of runs to wipe off; we made 99, G. Lee 26, G. Wong 17 not out; the Saints made 5 runs for no wicket thus winning outright.

The next match was against the Y.M.C.A. We batted first and made 136, G. Lee 58, R. Lee 34, and the Y.M.CA. replied with 107; C. Lewis 3 wkts. for 25 runs. We earned a 1st innings win and made 71 for 3 in the 2nd innings, G. Baird 35.

Then we played the Volunteers and made 73 in the first knock, R. Bacchus 16, C. Lewis 14 and E. Cheong 13. We displayed excellent fielding form, bowling our opponents for 31; N. Bacchus 6 for 25 and M. Ragbeer 3 wkts. for 6 runs. We made 34 for 4 in our second knock.

It was against the Malteenoes that we played our last match of the season. In the 1st innings, we made our lowest score 43 runs, G. Baird 11 and M. Moore 10. After having our opponents in a position of 31 runs for 6 wkts., they recovered to make 93. N. Bacchus 5 for 30 and M. Moore 3 wkts. for 8 runs. Determined to win we made a total of 111 in the 2nd innings. M. Moore 29, R. Lee 20 and G. Wong 15. Giving our opponents 62 to make for victory we bowled them down for 50. M. Ragbeer bowled Well to get 5 wkts. for 9 runs.

So far we have 15 pts. and the team must be commended for its fine performance. Special praise to R. Bacchus for excellent fielding, he was solely responsible for a number of our opponents’ run outs. M. Ragbeer bowled well to get 11 wkts. for 71 runs, N. Bacchus 20 wickets for 189 runs and R. Lee 13 for 177.

Our best batsman was G. A. Lee who amassed 267 runs in 13 innings.

He was well ahead of the other batsmen and is the only one worthy of praise.

W ight Cup Characters G. LEE: Our opening batsman who has an orthodox style. He drives the ball well and excels on the field especially at slips.

G. BAIRD: The wicket-keeper of the side. Performed creditably behind the stumps dismissing many batsmen. His batting has improved, but he should time his strokes more.

R. BACCHUS: A batsman who seems to be always in a hurry. Is a very good fielder espeeialy at covers. Safe catch.

R. LEE: A good batsman who has not made many runs this season. He however displayed fine bowling form getting 13 wickets. Is an excel­ lent slip fielder.

G. WONG: A diminutive batsman who glides well, but is not able to put enough force into his strokes because of his small size. Defends his wicket well and is hard to get out. Is a fair fielder, throws in well.

C. LEWIS: Our change bowler who at some times shows fine form. A good batsman and fields well at short mid-wicket. Unpredictable.

N. BACCHUS: One of our opening bowlers whose outswingers have earned him 20 wickets. Should try to control his length some more.

Possesses good judgment on the field and catches well. A fair batsman.

E, CHEONG: A batsman who uses his eye well. Should remember that the game is being played for runs. Bowls an off-break. Is a fair fieldsman.

M. RAGBEER: Our opening bowler who is somewhat erratic. Has failed with the bat. Is a good fieldsman.

R. GILES: A slow left-arm leg-spinner. A poor fieldsman and trying bat.

M. BRANKER: Too defensive a batsman who does not use his height to advantage. Is a good fieldsman.

Notes

JUNIOR LEAGUE: For the first time the School has won the Reed Cup. The last time that the school won any of the Junior cups was about six years ago when they won the Russell K.O. Trophy. The School XI played unbeaten in this competition, and met the Post Office and Medical Sports Club in the final. The result was a 3-nil victory for the school team. Members of the team were given medals for their fine all-round play. In the knockout competition, however, we did not lest long. The School may again win the Reed Cup this year. So far all our matches have been won with an average of four goals per match.

DIAS CUP SEMI-FINAL: In the Dias Cup Semi-final St. Stanislaus beat the School XI by 2-1. The score is not very convincing, for, after Bacchus had to leave the field early in the game when the school was one goal up, we had to play with ten men during the rest of the game.

I hope we shall not be so unfortunate the next time.

HOUSE FOOTBALL: Austin House won the football competition last year. In the present competition, with all the 1st XI games concluded, Percival House is in the lead. It remains to be seen what will happen in the 2nd XI games.

Hockey

Notes

During the period June, 1950 to May, 1951, there has been a marked development in interest in hockey at ‘Queen’s College. Many boys have Deen eager to learn the game but the running off of the league games made it impossible for special practices to be held for them.

The Hiram Walker League was played off in the latter part of 1950.

We won our games against the Y.M.C.A. and the Infantry, and did very well to draw with the ‘Chinese’ and the B.G. We lost to the G.F.C., D.R.U.F.C. and G.C.C., one-nil, two-one, and four-two, respectively.

Continuous rains washed out the Dare knockout Competition and no further hockey was played in 1950.

In March, this year’s league was started. We had a team that was capable of beating the strongest, but poor forward play was our down­ fall.. Our backs were good and our half backs superb. These three boys, Gary and Rollo Lee and Moore, must indeed be complimented on their fine performances throughout the season.

With only a few matches left to be played the league was suspended to allow the trials for the Trinidad Tour to take place. Gary Lee brought honour to the school by gaining selection as right-half. We congratulate him on his selection and on his fine performance in Trinidad.

At the last meeting of the Games Club, I Wong, G. Lee, F. Mongul, and R. Bacchus were awarded hockey colours.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish the future Queen’s College hockey team the Very best of luck. While I was captain it was my wish, as well as the wish of every other member of the team, to bring a hockey trophy into the College. We did not, but there is no reason why in the near future our ambitions should not be fulfilled by you. Just keep trying, and above all listen to advice from the older players.

W. I. LEE:—Goalkeeper. A newcomer to the side. Kicks very well with either foot but is very unsure when stopping shots that come to his right foot.

C. E. YHAP:—Right back with a strong clearance. Tries to use his reverse stick too much.

This fault invariably resulting in disaster.

I. R. WONG:—Left back who plays the game with plenty of brain.

First times well and is a.robust tackier.

G. LEE:—Right half. The most improved player on the side. A very sound tackier who rarely misses a ball, he caught the selectors eyes and gained a place in the side to Trinidad in June.

R. N. LEE:—Vice-Captain of the side. One of the best centre-halves in the Colony. Possesses excellent stick-work and plenty of stamina.

Passes very accurately.

M. M. MOORE:—The other member of a truly fine half back line. Used to play outside left, but has dropped back to left half and is now playing an excellent game.

N. L. FUNG:—Right winger who still tends to stray. Centres very power­ fully, invariably too much so, and has a good shot.

R. C. BACCHUS:—Inner right with a good shot and plenty of speed.

Has become a bit selfish but this I think is due to over-enthusiasm.

Yet to learn ball control.

F, E. MONGUL:—Centre-forward — most probably the fastest hockey player in the Colony. Has a good shot* but like Bacchus lacks!' ball control.

W. CHIN:—Left-winger — a very slow thinker. This probably is the reason why he starts moving when the ball is almost touch. Centres well when he does.

R. A. GIBBONS:—A fast winger whose chief fault is his inability to keep his stick down.

W. E. NURSE:—Reserve half-back who marks his opponent as if his life depends on it. Plays the game with the correct spirit.

R. M. GLASFORD:—Our skipper and mainstay of the forward line. Fills any inside position but delights in shooting from the left side. His stick-work and experience tend to make him hold the ball too much.

Table Tennis Notes (by M. M. MOORE) “The amazing and successful metamorphosis of Table Tennis from parlou-r game to world stadium is because it has captivated popular support.”

Table Tennis is a sport of thrills and high nervous tension, it has the suspense of unpredictability and the shocks of surprise, it demands perfect fitness, mental and physical and the speed of lightning; and while it remains such it will flourish.

Yet there is something which is killing the game. This is usually termed, ‘Pushing, chiselling, or unenterprising play.7 Those who know the game and can so often find justification for a chiselling match must beware of overlooking the dominant point. They may tend to praise a player who stone-walls his way to bring victory to his team. In fact, they know the reason for negative games, and so have tended to tolerate them. But supporters, the audiences who pay for the big matches are not so tolerant; they have paid to be thrilled, shocked, excited, and like it or not, they are the customers who are always right.

It is* essential that everyone in the game should realise the importance and necessity of ensuring that all matches open to the public are such that they bring a repeat.” This will also solve local financial problems, how this shall be done is not so easy to decide, but my advice to all is—Practise your attack until you can hit the ball from any angle on toi a penny.

Perfect a drop shot both from near the net and from the back of the table. Perfect your defence, but only use it until you can go in to the attack. WIN your points YOURSELF, and donlt expect any from your opponent’s mistakes.

Now for some of our records.

I think that Table Tennis is the school’s most successful activity.

We can proudly boast of having had a colony champion in school, the school team defeating a Barbados Colony Team, and having had two players selected to represent the colony on two successive occasions — against Barbados, and in the B.W.I.T.T. Championships held in Trinidad.

Some of our players took part in the Goodwill Tournament early in the year. The most successful was N. C. Phillips who reached the finals in his division. He should be congratulated for his fine performance.

Again, I appeal to the younger brigade let’s have some enterprising play.

Table Tennis Characters CHAN, H. V.: A good defensive player who is now developing his attack- With a combination of steady attack and good defence, this player will worry his opponents.

JONES, A.: A steady attacking player who has a lot of promise. Shows great determination when playing, times his strokes very well and can defend when it is essential.

KEMSIES, P.: One of our best attacking players with a good defense.

Has an unorthodox half-volleying style. Top-spins well and should go far in this year’s Campbell Cup Championship games.

KWOK, C.: This player has deteriorated considerably owing to his devotion to other games. His performance in recent tournaments was poor. Should try to gain confidence.

LEILA, R.: A left-handed player who has shown great improvement.

He tries to chop the ball too hard and this has been his downfall many times. Has a good back-hand flick, but should develop a steady fore-arm drive.

PHILLIPS, N. C. : A promising player with a very good defence. Per­ formed creditably in this year’s Goodwill Tournament. Though not very aggressive, his impregnable defence and occasional smashes worry his opponents.

SHAW, L. D.: The right type of player who tries to do the correct thing, but is often unsuccessful in so doing. Flicks well and top-spins the ball well. Should practise more.

WONG, G.: A colony star who represented the colony in the B.W.I.T.T. Championships held in Trinidad. Chops the ball with great accuracy and has an impregnable defence.

WONG, I. R.: Our vice-captain and leading atacking player. Is very attractive when on the aggressive. He excels on the counter attack­ ing game. Should try to play steadier.— (MOORE, M. M.).

Q.C. to Tour Barbados in August Arrangements have been made for a proposed tour by members of the School’s XI, as guests of Harrison College, Barbados. As usual it was on a Friday in March that we held our Annual Athletic Sports. As usual the crowd of spectators was large and enthusiastic. As usual competition was keen and records were broken.

Inspired by glorious weather and the delighted squeals of the many female spectators Frank Mongul and Arnold Gibbons fought it out tooth and nail as to which of them would carry away the Senior Championship.

With last year’s Champion Ronald Bacchus partially laid up with an injured thigh, and no one else there to split the points, these two fine athletes raced to a tie and shared the Championship Cup. J. W. Wittingham records time of 23.1 secs, for the 220 open and his record throw of 36 ft. 9 ins. in the Shot Putt could, not stand against the speed and strength of Gibbons as he did the distance in 22.6 secs, and threw the Shot 39 ft. 6 ins. Mongul’s time of 54 secs, flat for the 440 equalled the existing record.

Among the younger boys in the Under 13 division the tiny McGowan again emerged champ, although he had strong rivalry from Baker — who equalled the 100 yards record—and Fields who won the 220 and high jump.

M. E. Miller of Weston House had to overcome stiff opposition from D. W. Bacchus and C. S. Spence to gain the Under 15 championship: but he did it.

Winning the high jump and all the flat races but the 380 yds. in his division Hamilton Green once more made himself the top athlete of the Under 17 class. But his triumph was not as complete as last years: J. L. Taitt of Percival won the 880 yds., held him to a tie in the high jump, and set a blistering pace in the Hurdles to win in the record time of 16 secs.

The blood-red of the Percival House jerseys held no terrors for Weston House who, without the customary groans and sighs, pulled them over to win the Tug-’O-War Under 17. Groans and sighs were very much in evidence, however, when Austin House beat Pilgrim House’s open team.

Gorgeous, coloured socks and flapping shirt tails followed Mr. L. B. Melville home as he won the Old Boys Race from Messrs. R. R. Chin and S. Gordyk.

Early in the day Pilgrim, with 153% points and Weston 143 points, were strong rivals to Percival, but the latter, glorying in her Monguls, her Bacchuses, her Taitts, eventually romped home some twelve points ahead of her nearest rival.

Prizes and trophies were distributed by His Excellency the Governor Sir Charles Woolley K.C.M.G., who congratulated the winners, consoled the lossers and declared himself well entertained by the day’s sport. A rousing cheer arose, at the end, for His Excellency, His Grace, the Archbishop of the W.I., and the other distinguished visitors.

GIBBONS, R. A.: This powerful well-built athlete who divided the senior championship honours with Mongul, specialises in sprints and has a strong driving finish which demoralises his opponents. He also holds the school shot-putt record.

MONGUL, F. E. A combination of grace and speed resulted in this slim, fleet-footed athlete sharing the senior championship with Gibbons.

Would be more successful if he improved his judgment.

GREEN, H.: Our^ under 17 champion is a sprinter of outstanding merit who uses his Strength to full advantage. His judgment is good and his form always excellent.

On the Decline of the Intellect (by ARNOLD GIBBONS, VIB.)

My purpose in writing this article is not entirely to criticise* or even to attempt to reform any part of existing society, still less it is to opine on the appropriateness of it — I am rather like a man walking through a welldiowered garden, stopping here and there, now to look on a beauti­ ful rose in full-bloom, now to upbraid a withered bud, then to watch at a bee sucking pollen from a flower, and occasionally to muse on the complex forms of nature, seeing in them however unlike they are a similarity of conception — I am the patient onlooker, rocking good-fellow­ ship marks my observations.

What is the intellect? What constitutes an intellectual? If we con­ sider an intellectual as a person adept in the use of words, lofty in literary tastes, dignified in bearing, critical in faculty and possessing the letters of a university professor, then we are wrong *in our conception of the intellect; for this intellect is no place for the store of great and learned knowledge, indeed such knowledge is but a means to end. Intellect is the faculty of good understanding: hence a farmer, or a ploughman may be no less an intellectual than a lecturer on moral philosophy at Oxford.

We must consider each in his own light and take care lest the shadow of one should not completely hide or obscure the merits of the other, for they are all intellectuals.

Anyone, no matter his means or situation in life, who helps to foster and cherish good human understanding is an intellectual. Farmers are men who are free from the contamination, of the evils of society life.

Their very habitation close as it is to nature brings them the pure and serene thoughts of things natural: the poor peasant who lies under a tree for his rest with no other covering but the sky and no. other but the free air; he sleeps to the music of the whistling branches and chirp­ ing birds and croaking frogs, and rustling brooks. No perturbed feeling disturbs or injures his rest or his thoughts, his life is his heaven, his death his hell. His sphere of knowledge is limited, but what he knows, he knows well. His seeds planted in early Spring must ripen and be reaped in Autumn; the land must be nurtured and kept free of impedi­ ments so as to guarantee the young seed a prosperous growth. All the while he must watch with anxious face his seasons, for on their correct functioning the success of his harvest inevitably depends. He “ sweats beneath the eye of Phoebus” from morn till night and tired and foot­ sore, he creeps to his cottage to enjoy a well-earned rest; and well is he worthy of it. No one can deny him it. His elementary passions exist in a limited and conservative world. He knows little besides the accus­ tomed run of events; the quarrel of distant politicians do not harm him, wars and rumours of wars mo more affect him than the barking of a dog, for he well knows that “ the time shall come when all the swords and spears shall be turned into ploughshears and pruning hooks” . Njo one can deprive him of his independence. Anyone who has the right of cultivating his land, however small that right may be, is worthy 'of our highest praise. The land is our true heritage, she is the foundation

of our strength, all true wealth comes from her. The love of a peasant farmer for his land is based upon truer and more sincere relationship than a scholar for his books. The latter may rely' only upon the caprice and slavish adherence to long established principles — although there is some room for personal research and investigation. The former has under­ stood his mistress’ every whim and caprice. Oft times she has borne poor results and he has had to nourish her, oft times he has disputed an intense struggle with the elements for supremacy, vanquished, victori­ ous he treats “ these two imposters just the same” , for his reward will be great. His mistress rewards the patient toiler. She is the foundation of his well-being.

A nation’s true greatness rests not in her military resources, but in the colony of her peasants. Such a creed was much more in existence among the ancients than thqy are now. The land was the pride of the Roman peasant, he had seized the anxious hands, while wars were ravish­ ing the countryside and protected it in the height of fury. When he chose to surrender it and migrate to the provincial towns the decay of the Empire did then start. Politics creeped unnoticed into his midst, when he became dependent on the goodwill of politicians whose votes he was to provide for his livelihood.

The divorce of a peasant from his land was like that of a newly born infant from his mother — the child lacked the guidance of wisdom and surrendered itself to vain and dissolute practices — the peasant long accustomed to live in affinity to nature found the provincial life beyond his experience.

With all the mirror of history at our disposal modern society seems to be widening the gulf of retrogression. We have not profited from the mistakes of kingdoms and empires built on precarious foundations.

The peasant hastens from his land to the city feeling assured of better conditions for employment, feeling that to clothe oneself in the adorn­ ments of a city clerk more unhonourable to the somewhat rude garments of a rustic occupation. He is disillusioned, he finds “ a square peg in a round hole” , inevitably he becomes an uncomfortable participant in the city mob. Yet I fear, the blame rests not so much on the unfortunate farmer, as on the “ supposed intellectual” who swots his Latin and Philoso­ phy and encourages this divorce by his slavish adherence to fixed princi­ ples. The man who lives most, is the one who thinks most, slavish adherence brings on pedantry, and pedantry is a retrogressive step, in that it subdues and limits our thinking power. These accomplishments are not an end in themselves — a knowledge of Latin, Greek and History does not entitle us to sit on the loftiest perch and pique ourselves as intellectuals versed in a knowledge of human affairs —« human under­ standing. The error we make is to consider a part as a whole itself.

Such a principle is damaging to our minds and threatens our very social structure.

It creates in effect, two classes of persons, the “ supposed intellectuals” those desired to be admitted to that “ select” company. Labourers, too old to enjoy such benefits as might accrue to them lecture their sons in the creed “never to follow in Dad’s footsteps”, strive after the high social

plane where you’ll be recognised, acquire the “petites graces” which society demands, and pursue to the full your study. The spirit of our ances­ tors croak within their graves. The land upon which all their lives, their souls depended have been forgotten, laid , waste by an unworthy successor. The backbone of the nation is broken, no Henry V could cry on the morning of a great battle “And ye good yeomen whose bones were born in England, show us here the mettle of your pasture” . Society does not bear the call of nature; exultant in her ill-gotten gains she pursues her way with every device of cunning art to amend the lives of her followers. Reason is forgotten, men subdue their individuality to collectivity: society dictates their standards, and their judgments; knowledge of unnecessary detail is considered a truer sign of intellect than things natural; thrift is of no importance, extravagance rules the day, necessity is compatible with wastefulness.

It is true that culture is indispensibly necessary to an individual, and it is true that culture cannot be achieved while the individual remains alone. But its correct adaptation in society is the preserving of a person’s individuality, and to surrender these brave rights constitutes a very grave error. Society should not dictate for us, we should not fear to disturb old traditions and customs if these are incompatible with modern ten­ dencies. In any community there is always a portion which clings to the existing order of things and reluctant to revise; and another portion which

represents enlightenment and progress. In these two divergent claims a perpetual war wages, and upon its effective solution the prosperity of the place depends. Let the party of enlightened progress throw off their servile allegiance, gather up fresh recruits and win the day.

Importance of

the Atom

by D. D. Chundun (VlaSc.) On the modern view atoms are not the indivisible, fundamental, indes­ tructible particles as conceived by Dalton, but are of a complex internal structure of their own built up of smaller particles — particles of electricity.

It was the experiments of Sir William Crookes, who passed electric currents through vacuum tubes, and the discovery of Rontgen. rays (X-rays) that changed the accepted theories of matters’ constitution. Sir William discovered that when an electric current was passed through a tube, nearly empty of air, the tube became filled with phosphorescent emanations — a patch of green fluorescent light appeared on the glass wall opposite the cathode. Now this effect is due to something emitted from the cathode and travelling in straight lines along/the tube. Sir J. J. Thompson showed that they were negatively charged particles — or electrons, whose mass was about lj 1800th that of an atom of hydrogen — the lightest element which constituted the fundamental substance of all matter. Obviously then the atom of hydrogen could no longer be considered as the smallest particle as these electrified particles were considerably more minute.

The atom of a substance consists of one or more small particles of 'negative’ electricity — termed negative electron — rotating rapidly round a nucleus or core carrying a positive charge of electricity — proton — exactly, as the planets move in their orbits round the sun. Also associated with the nucleus is an electrically neutral particle — neutron —) whose mass is approximately that of the hydrogen atom. As the atom of a substance is electrically neutral it follows that the charge of the electron is equal in magnitude but opposite in sign to that on the proton., The number of positive charges on the nucleus of the atom of an element constitutes the atomic number of the element; and the atomic weight of an element, since electrons are very light as compared with protons and neutrons, in terms of the weight of the hydrogen atom (approx, wt. of 1 proton) is equal ifoo the number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus.

The velocity of an electron is terrific — about twenty thousand miles a second or more. Indeed the speed of revolution is so fast "that over a billion atomic years may pass at the snap of a finger. Atomic people could live their lives/ nations could rise and fall, and the tiny atomic world grow cold in the tick of a terrestrial clock!” \

.The number of electrons in an atom, the method of their arrangement in relation to the central nucleus, determine the properties of the! atom and hence those of the element since an element is composed entirely of atoms which have identical properties. The simplest atom is the hydrogen atom which consists of a single proton with a single electron revolving around it — perhaps like the earth and the moon. The next simplest is the Helium atom whose nucleus consists of 2 protons and 2 neutrons and therefore has a charge of + 2 units. Two electrons revolve around it with a total negative charge of ( — 1) + ( — 1) = — 2 units so that the atom is electrically neutral. Other atoms have a greater number of electrons e.g. Manganese has 12 electrons and the electronic structure may be written

K2 L8, M2 where the letters refer to the orbits in which the electrons revolve — succeeding orbits being of wider radius than preceding orbits — the numbers to the number of electrons in the orbit.

On the other hand some atoms are of a highly complex structure ■ — radium atom whose electronic structure may be represented thus: K2, L8, M18, N32. 018, P8, Q2. This is a very heavy atom with a .complicated nucleus which is unstable. Therefore it results in a state of disintegration which cannot be stopped. Thus Radium gives out certain emanations.

It appears that the atomic number of an element must be at least 82 for this spontaneous disintegration, i.e. by Nature and not by man, to take place.

In 1896 Becquerel discovered that uranium ores gave out ‘something’ which affected a photographic plate and ionised a gas, and in 1898 he discovered the same for thorium. M. and Mme Curie, working with pitchblende (a uranium ore), discovered the same properties for a new element which they called radium and a further one— polonium. Debierne also noted, another which he named actinium.

These substances are termed radio-active substances and the emana­ tions are of 3 kinds known as the alpha, beta (B) and gamma ( Y ), rays and consist of a constant stream of particles made up of protons and |or electrons. The particles of the alpha rays consist! of 2 protons and: 2 neutrons, a combination that is of the same constitution as the nucleus of a helium atom. The beta rays consist of particles composed entirely of electrons. The gamma rays are not particles but a form of very short rays of the same kind as Rontgen rays.

The nucleus can also be disintegrated in the laboratory. Rutherford in 1919 showed this was possible (as distinct from natural radioactivity) by bombarding it by fast moving alpha particles from a radioactive sub­ stance. If a fast moving positive alpha particle collides with a nucleus which has only a small positive charge (e.g. nitrogen: atomic no. 7 and atomic weight 14) it may eject a proton from the nucleus. This decreases the atomic weight by 1 and the atomic number also by 1 so that there is a transformation to another atom. Considering the nitrogen case: the nucleus gains 2 + ve charges due to the alpha particle absorbed and it loses + 1 due to the ejected proton, so the gain is + 1.

The mass number increases by 4 due to the alpha particle and decreases by 1 (ejected proton) so the increase is 3. The new nucleus has an atomic number of (7 ~f 1) = 8 and a mass number of (14 + 3) = 17. Now oxygen; has lan atjomic number 8 and atomic weight 16. Thus a change from a nitrogen atom to an isotope of an oxygen atom has occurred.

A similarity is shown between the constitution of atoms and that of the universe. If a helium atom could be magnified so that it was the same size as the solar system in which its + nucleus would correspond to the Sun, its 2 negatrons would also resemble Uranus and Neptune as regards comparative size, distance from the centre,\ and period of revolutions.- Thus an atom is composed of ‘empty space’. It has been said that “ if all the electrons in a human body were to coalesce so that they formed a solid central mass, the whole would form a speck no larger than this full stop . ” Fournier d’Albe believed that each tiny electron resembled the earth in every particular the result being* that life may

flourish on it not very different from life on the earth. D. I. Mendeleeff likened the whole of the visible^ stellar universe to a large scale model of the atomic universe. Anatole France suggested that our universe may only be an atom in some larger system! These fancies give food for thought on one of the most fascinating mysteries of science.

As in magnetism 'Tike repels like” and "unlikes attract” , so negative repels negative and positive attracts (and equals) negative. If an atom takes up electrons it acquires a negative charge and if it loses electrons it becomes positively charged, for then it has more positive charges than negative electrons. This process is termed ionisation,, and the charged atoms ions. Electrons in the atom are held comparatively loosely and are so affected by ordinary chemical reactions. There is general tendency for the atoms of metallic elements to lose electrons and those of non metallic elements to gain electrons. When Sodium combines with chlorine co form Sodium Chloride (2 N a r C12 = 2 N ad) an electron has been lost!) by each atom of sodium and acquired by each chlorine atom. As each sodium atom was electrically neutral and as each has now lost a negative charge, it becomes converted into a sodium ion with an extra + ve charge and likewise a chlorine atom becomes a chlorine ion with an extra —ve charge of electricity.

Because of the enormous speeds with which the planetary electrons move around the central nucleus an atom stores up an immense amount of energy. An ounce of radium would give out sufficient heat in an hour to raise 1%, ounces of water to B.P. So that if the atom could be "split” this enormous amount of energy would become available. If the atoms of one gram of hydrogen could be exploded simultaneously sufficient energy would be produced to lift 1,000,000 tons to over 300 ft. So it is said.

According to Dr. Brasch if a( ton of coal could be treated atomically sufficient heat would be generated to melt all the ice in the North Polar cap! In 1932 Drs. J. D. S. Cockroft and E. J. S. Walton of Cambridge split the atom using a high tension current of 120,000-600,000 volts. Later in the same year Brasch and Lange in Berlin using a cathode tube and 2,400,000 volts announced that they had disintegrated the atoms of 6 different, elements. But in none of these experiments was there any sudden access of energy. If we could annihilate matter, theoretically, we should obtain an immense amount of energ}^ If We could cause an electron and a proton to coalesce, an inconceivable amount of energy would* be released. When an atom is split one element is really converted into’ another by altering the composition of the nucleus. An additional particle is introduced or the nucleus is caused to expel a particle. In 1919 Ruther­ ford and Chadwick transmuted a number of the lighter elements. And, of course, since then, important progress has been made and atom-splitting — of the once indivisible atom — has become the ordinary occupation of the physicist.

If a proton and an electron could be removed from each of the atoms of 1 oz. of mercury we ought to have instead 1 oz. of gold, and the dream of the ancient alchemists, who thought that they would have been able to convert the baser metals into gold and silver,’ would come true. The alchemists’ successor today is concerned with the benefits to humanity as a result of his researches. Atom-splitting is accomplished by means of a very powerful 50-ton machine known as the Cyclotron (another type

has been constructed at Cornell University), for converting certain substances into :adio-active ones by changing their atomic structure; and these will enable treatment to be given for cancer and other ailments at less cost than for radium treatment and in a much easier manner But what of the energy derived from splitting the atom? Joliot esti­ mated that at one single explosion the energy liberated would be equivalent to that represented by 200,000,000 volts. What would be its use? It has already been used for man’s destruction — viz. in the atomic oomb. But it could also be used for more peaceful purposes. Unnecessary islands could be removed, mountains could be made to vanish and the course of rivers diverted. It is said that the Russians have already diverted the natural course of a river by this energy. Who knows that perhaps an instrument may be invented whereby the operator would be able to initiate the annihilation of matter at a distance in a precise direction and also inhibit the process. Obviously such an instrument1as a source of destruction would be perfect, as a source of power it would nave unlimited potentiality.

Notes

For the past few years great strides have been made in raising the standard of scouting in the colony. Our Scout Troop, which had lost many of its stalwarts, and which seemed to be dying, once more started its upward journey. This was due to the indefatigable efforts of S. M, Cameron Tudor, A.S.M. Linton, and a few scouts who still exhibited the traditional fighting spirit of the 27th. By the end of the last school yeas there were thirty active scouts, eighteen of which had been invested only a few months before.

During the Easter vacations last year the troop camped under canvas at Bartica where the younger boys gained much-needed experience.

Everyone had an enjoyable, time especially since S. M. Cameron Tudor proved himself an able cook.

In August eight scouts', under the leadership of Senior P.L’s Clarke and Kerry, attended the Governor’s Cup Competition at Atkinson Field.

This was supposed to be a troop effort, but Mr. Cameron Tudor was holi­ daying in Barbados. In spite of this, however, we gained a close second.

At the commencement of the Spring Term this year, the troop was divided into three patrols with scouts Tang, Eyre and Phillips as Patrol Leaders, and Scouts Nicholson, Holder, W. and Tioo-Chung as Patrol Seconds respectively. The troop met on Wednesday afternoons while each patrol met on some other afternoon. In this way much work was done, and the Leaders and Seconds must be congratulated on their fine display of energy.

The visit of the Canadian Commissioner on 19th March caused a great stir amongst our boys. The day was spent in making our new den (the old armoury) look like a real den, and in preparing a model camp site.

The Commissioner saw an exhibition of signalling and First Aid. After drinking a cup of hot cocoa, Mr. Me Gregor complimented the cooks, and urged the scouts to keep up the good work.

Contrary to former custom meetings were held during the holidays.

Five recruits passed their Tenderfoot tests, and are well advanced in their Second Class work. Four scouts attended a First Class course at the Atkinson Field camp site and although the weather was unfavourable, they passed most of the tests. Those boys should try to complete their tests before the end of this term.

On the 2nd May the troop was again reorganized and four new patrols were formed. Holder was promoted P.L. of and Miller P.C. of, whilst Carter, Clarke and Kerry were appointed A.S.M’s.

We take this opportunity of welcoming to the troop Mr. Butler, our new Scout Master, and congratulating C. M. Peterkin on his appointment as G.S.M. It is the wish of Mr. Cameron Tudor that our new S.M. and A.S.M’s be given the whole-hearted support of the troop.

Lord Rowallan, the Chief Scout, will visit us next year, Before that time we hope to see our ranks swelled by First Class Scouts and possibly King’s Scouts., So roll up your sleeves and tackle the job!

The total strength of the corps is now forty-seven, which includes twelve N.C.O’s and two Officers.

Lieut. Smith left us at the end of last summer term, and has gone to the U.K., but his place has been taken by Lieut. McMohan of the Technical Institute, who served in the last war with the Royal Artillery.

The last camp at Atkinson Field, under Lieut. Maudsley and W|0. .

Elsbury of the B.G.V.F., was a great success, and everyone of the thirtysix cadets present enjoyed himself. The weather was fairly dry, and allowed activities such as shooting and swimming, although on two occasions, drill was interrupted by rain.

At camp, we were divided into four sections: Section 1 under Sgt. Jaikaran, Section 2 under Cpl. Miller, Section 3 under Cpl. Phang and Section 4 under L|Cpl. Phillips. Points were awarded to'each section for tidiness of barracks, smartness on parade and for the swimming competi­ tion and cross-country race. The best section was number 1, and Sgt. Jaikaran and his Section must be congratulated.

The highlight of the camp came when every cadet was allowed to fire the Bren gun, while certain cadets were also allowed- to fire the Sten gun and the mortar, under the supervision of WjO Elsbury.

With the help of eight cadets, Mr. Elsbury demonstrated to the rest of the corps, the elementary points about camouflage. Most of the chosen eight camouflaged themselves successfully, but one of them was unfor­ tunately “ decamouflaged” by a couple of marabuntas.

The camp was held from Saturday 12th to Saturday 19th of August, and on the Wednesday we were inspected by Lt.-Col. Haywood, M.B.E., T.D. — the C.O. of the B.G.V.F. — who was accompanied by Major King, the Adjutant. They both witnessed the camouflage manoeuvres, and ex­ pressed their approval on the neatness of the barracks, and the smartness of the boys. _ Autumn Term: Twenty-ope recruits joined the corps at the begin­ ning of the term, and were taught elementary drill by Sgt. Clarke and Cpl. Wishart, and were then handed over to the N.C.O’s of the Volunteer Force, who are now drilling the corps in the place of the Police N.C.O’s.

There were many promotions at the beginning of the term, for quite a few of our N.C.O’s had left school at the end of the summer term. The promotions were as follows: Cadets Wiltshire and Wishart were promoted to Corporals; Cadets Chan, Chin and Kerry to Lance Corporals; LiCpls.

Rhodes and Munroe to Corporals, and Cpl. Clarke to Sergeant.

During this term, the armoury was removed to the New School where parades are now held every Friday afternoon, instead of being held twice a week as they were at the Old School.

A detachment of Cadets attended the Armistice Day Parade without rifles as usual; if we want to carry these to future parades, we will have to “buck-up” with our arms drill.

A shooting competition was held during the Christmas holidays, and we were congratulated by W|0. Elsbury, on the high standard of the per­ formance. The results were as follows: Sgt. Jaikaran was first with 62 points out of a possible 80, Cpl. Rhodes was second with 61, and LjCpl. Chan and Cpl. Wishart tied for the third place with 55 points each.

Spring Term: Ten cadets — C.S.M. Nurse, Sgts. Jaikaran and Clarke, Cpls. Rhodes, Wiltshire and Wishart, LjCpls. Kerry and Chan, and Cadets Rickford and Mitchell — were selected, at the beginning of this term, to be trained in the handling o5 the Bren gun, under W|0. Elsbury and R.S.M. Pilgrim of the B.G.V.F. These lessons lasted throughout the term, and in the holidays another shooting competition was held, this time with rifles and a Bren gun. Cadet Holder shot very well, coming first with 54 points out of a possible 75, while C.S.M. Nurse was second with 48 and Sgt. Clarke third with 45. On the whole, the shooting was not as good as it was last time, but this was so because there were many recruits who were shooting for the first time, although some of them did fairly well.

Summer Term: This term opened with four promotions. L|Cpls.

Kerry and Chan were promoted to Corporals and Cadets Holder and Mitchell to Lance-Corporals.

It will be recalled that we were not allowed to take part in the King’s Birthday Parade last year. This year, however, we will be allowed, to do so and we are now having rehearsals for it — we may even parade with rifles.

Everyone is looking forward for some more fun at our annual camp in August, which is to be held at the same place as it was last year. This time, the main item on the programme will be rehearsing for the Guard of Honour for the opening of the New School in September. The camp, this year, will be free, since Government has allowed the corps an extra grant of money; but the number of boys that will be allowed to attend will be limited, and only those who turn up to parades regularly will be allowed fo go.

We must all offer our deepest sympathy to W|0. Elsbury, whose wife died early in last April. A wreath was sent by Capt. Nobbs on behalf of the school and Cadet Corps and a few cadets who heard in time, attended the funeral.

It is also regretted that WIO. Elsbury cannot attend our annual camp this year, this is because he is in England on special leave, for it was due partly to him, that camp was such a success last year.
