Another issue of the School Magazine is about to make its appearance - probably the last to be published during the relatively short time which now remains before we move into our spacious new building at Thomas Lands. Keen interest is being taken on all sides in that forthcoming event, but I know that the keenest interest of all is being taken by you - the boys of the School. Possess your souls in patience a little longer, and you will be well rewarded.

I think we can claim that the past year has been, on the whole, quite a successful one in all our spheres of activity. We are especially gratified at our admission or rather, re-admission - to first-division Cricket, and we are determined to show that we are worthy of a place in that competition by practising hard and playing the game in the very best sense of that term.

The candidates for the Higher Certificate have already passed through their ordeal, but we are in time to wish the School Certificate candidates success in their efforts. We must bid good-bye to the names "Higher Certificate" and "School Certificate" after this vear, and accustom ourselves to thei new names "General Certificate of Education Advanced Level and Ordinary Level." An examination by any name is a lways an unpleasant business you will rightly remark.

Well, good luck to this issue -

In a year's time the beautiful building now nearing completion at Longden Park, Pin. Thomas wi ll be occupied. The boys in the p resent lower school will be educated in one of the f inest build ings in the West Indies, equipped w ith the latest conveniences in its laborator ies, form rooms, d ining -ha ll a nd recrec,ti on-ha ll. The members of the Literary and Dramatic Society-if haply it still functions then- wil l conduct their meaningless gossipings in the most beautiful auditorium :n the colony . Plays wi ll be staged on a scale unequa:ied before, and cultura l and educational act ivities w il l receive greai'er incent ive and wider expression.

Now when al l thoug hts are turned to the transference of power 1he old, battered ¡ flagship (which has these three decades withstood the pounding batteries of ignorance and illiteracy) to the maiestic new building we must not forget what th is dusty yellow structure has done for us. Through its creaking,_ groaning porta ls have passed men fated to guide the destiny of our country. into a world eager to receive them Queen's College, as this quarter century has known it, has sent youths fully equipped w ith a thorough foundation knowledge and capable of weathering the intense storms that w ill inevitab!y confront the ship of life.

Her wal ls have witnessed the maturing of minds great and small; they have seen the "exits and entrances'' of men capable of ruli ng a land; they have seen wh ining schoolboys w ith shining morning face creep unw iliing ly to and from their classroom; they have seen lovers sighing like furnaces in blast; they have seen young men from all walks of life mingle in a common zeal.

Queen's College is proud of her records; she has fulfi lled in 1he years spent at Brickdam the gay a nd glorious traditions set up and fostered by her during a century of di ligent toil. She hos " better'd better expectation" than was ever dreamt of.

She has ach ieved g reat thi ngs but these ach ievements wil l not be the signa l for her to sit back and sing songs in praise of her laurels, wondrous though they be; nay, as always in the van of circumstance, she shall cont inue to be th e best and brightest school in our country; and, with :he acquisition of better and more adequate facilities for constructive a nd comprehensive work she shall doubtless set the example for her -:ontemporaries in the Caribbean to follow.

Queen's College is not only a school where one comes to learn 1he elements of several subjects. On the contrary, it is a vital institution catering for 1he increasing needs of an advancir.g comfl"Unity; she not only teaches her wards book-lessons, but what is more important outfits them for the more responsible a;1d perilous /ob of living and working in a critical , often unsympatheti,: socie1y.

She inculcates in her pupils the superlative values of goodness, kindness and the common virtues of civil ized man. No offending Adam will continue his malpractices under her farsighted gu idance. Here is no martinet, no reformatory, but a democratic institution created with a purpose, and always doing her very best towards the mo1erial isation of her ideals. Through her doors have passed civil servants, doctors, lawyers, engineers, administrators, legislators and each can testify to the solidarity and perspicacity of Q.C's principles of edurnt1on.

Today we hove a Universi1y of our own in the West Indies and since its establishment two years ago, higher education has become more important in the Caribbean. The UCWI needs good progressive students and such can only come from schools with a sound ond resolute system of education. In this respect Q.C. is fur aheaJ of many of her contemporaries . Though she may be handicapped by a shortage of qualified teachers, she is not in the least perturbed.

For now the silver lining hos bared itself from th,.:i lowering cloud.

She sha ll be furnishing UCWI with undergraduates of confirmed scholarship; UCWI will be sen.ding her qualified teachers and preceptors-DAMUS, PETIMUSQUE V ICISSIMIn literate circles all over the West Ind ies, the predom;nant topi :: of conversation is Federation. Colonia l governments concerned are asking themselves 1he compulsory question: "Are we going to enter the British Caribbean Federation?" Whatever the answer we know it will be intended for the good of our homelands. One thing we are sure of, however: soon there will be a Federation of som¡e sort in the British West Indies and we must be prepared for the responsib ili ties it will entail. We shall be needing men capable of leading 0 United British Caribbean. We shall need men with grit and determination. Our future leaders must be trained from their youth and our school will not neglect this vital duty to West Indian civilization.

Next year many of us will unfortunately be unabl e to attend the 'new' Queen's College. Many of us who have greatly :onged

to go there will be unable to enjoy its amenities. We shall, however, have one consol~tion. The build ing wi ll be new but the ideals and conceptions will be the same old ones. Queen's College will never change in spirit. Her soul will live on and on in the minds of those who know her; long after we have left, her tenets will continue 1o guide us on our hazardous journey through life. She will forever be a beaconlight pointing us out the safe and sure path; she wiil continue to impart to us doctrines and precepts inseparnble from a conscientious way of life. She will continue "persuading lead ing, sacrificing, teaching always, because her greatest duty is to ~d,,;cate ."

Queen's College has a tradition to upkeep-a tradition of glorious undertakings and remarkable successes; we entertain not one iota of doubt that she w ill faithfully carry on to more infinite perfection in the new building what she w ill have left off in the old.

" The Year in Retrospect."

The skirts of the departing year now flutter before us, as if to say, "I've had my fill, "it's time for my progeny to take the stage". The school year is now drawing to a close. Du ring its journey i t has witnessed the good, the bad, and the indifferent. On the whole, however, this year has seen more of good than of bad.

The event of the year was the visit of the Earl of Athlone. In preparation for this the old school was given a thoro ugh cleaning. At the end of this she looked so spick and span that one could not help feeling, - especially if you had grown up within her walls, - a touch of pathos at our impending departure. It was not only the building that appeared in the best of form. T he Cadets cleaned their rifles, polished up their boots and their drill, the masters discovered their gowns while the boys substituted b lue serge for khaki. All th is eviden tly impressed the Earl.

He certainly beamed with satisfaction and went so far as to offer a holiday. Royalty seemed quite at home on its first visit to us. Perhaps the Earl must have remembered that he was an Earl, but we were Queen's!

This year was stricken with a rash of visits. .quring the August holidays last we had with us the members of Harri~n College. They stayed about 3 weeks with us. Du ring that time they met ourselves and St. Stanislaus at football and cricket. We did not give of our best for we wer e beaten 3-nil at soccer while we just contrived to hold our own at cricket. Our visitors apparently enjoyed their holiday and we look forward most eagerly to repaying the visit.

For us to do better next time we have to put in more effort. We have been fortunate in being admitted to Senior cricket this year, but up to one moment we are not doing as well as was expected, if we must judge from our performances in the Wight Cup towards the close of last year season. We are still full of hope, however. All hope of retaining the J acob Cup has been lost. We cast away our ten chances in the St. Stanislaus inning and allowed th em to pass our score of 236.

In football our prospects are perhaps a little brighter. Berbice took the Dias Cup from us last year but we seem as if we are out to recover it this time. At least our 3-nil defeat of St. Stanislaus in the semi-final points in a favourable direction. In the Reed League we have at the moment won 5 consecutive games and are in the lead. We have to cross our fingers and hope for the best.

The o~her deJ?artments of sport have been much in the limelight.

Our athletic meeting was, as usual, a s uccess though one thinks that it would h a.ve succeeded more if there h ad been a revival of inter-collegiate sports this year. Ne~ertheless, v.:e made up for this by competing in the recent Easter Olympiad and placmg 3rd. In Hockey we saw V. P . Chung

represent the Colony against Trinidad, while M. Glasford did well to score a goal for the Combined Clubs against the visitors. The fame of these must be shared with Moore's sterling performance in the Campbell Cup Series. What a pity he was defeated at the finals! Once again the school wE>nt swimming at the G.F.C. Once again J. I. F. Phillips was champion.

Once again the Principal referred to the sparsity of public baths in the Colony. For the first time prizes were distributed .

So much for sport. Now we have to go lo work. This year saw the birth - or is it rebirth? - of a new venture - A school newspaper.

This has been made possible, in the main, through the efforts of Messrs.

Tudor and Allsopp not to speak of those of M. Ragbeer, I. H. D. Harewood F. E. Mongul, and R. L. Clarke. At th e moment production has been stopped on account of our failure to register our paper with the Government.

But we hope to be in action in a short while.

At the recent public examinations we excelled. In the B.G. School examination, we obtained no less than 5 places of the 9 who r eached standard, not to speak of the fact that those five wise men secured 10 out of a possible 15 distinctions. We have to congratulate Ramsahoye not only on gaining the scholarship, but on being the first boy to obtain a distinction in Physics. At the School Certificate our performance was also commendable. We do hope that this level will be kept up.

Our masters also have come in for their share. To Messrs. Persaud, Niles and W. Smith, have gone C.D. & W. Scholarships. At this we rejoice, but with the thought that our staff problem has n ow reached an acute stage. We will find it difficult to replace these three masters, who leave us in September. If we add to this the fact that Mr. D. Smith has departed and Miss P eterkin has followed in his path we should realise our position. We have to thank heaven that Messrs. Larthe and Rawlins have returned from leave, and that Mr. K. A. L. Brown has joined us again. This can barely offset the departure - on leave - of Messrs.

Chunillal and T. B. Richmond, not to speak of our Prep. Mistress, whose yeoman services have been recognised by the grant of a Music Scholarship from the Britis)1 Council. There will be a great number of new faces at Queen 's in September.

One can conclude by saying that on the whole both our Extra and !ntra-Mural Departments hav::! 9erformed well this year. But still there is room for improvement.-B. A. EYRE.

We regret to record the death of John Henry Aloysius Bakker. born 20th March, 1938, who died in the Public Hospital, Georgetown, on Saturday, 4th March, 1950, after a short illn<>ss. He entered Queen's College in September, 1949, and was in Form IA.-R.I.P.

We are exceedingly proud as we congratulate Mr. Hilary Alberic M aughn Beckles on gainin g his Master of Arts Degree In Absentia from Oxford University.

Mr. Beckles has had a most distinguis hed academic career, and he full y deserves this great honour.

He gained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classics at Codring ton College, Barbados, entered Durham University in 1920, and became fellow of the University of Durh am in 1921; in 1923 he gained his B.A. with honours (Jurisprudence) from Exeter College, Oxford; he was also the Heath Harrison Scholar (French) Oxford, 1923; he b ecame a Barrister-at-Law, Middle Temple in 1925; and has now his M.A. (Oxon) , 1950.

Mr. Beckles entered Queen's College as an assis tant master on the 2nd March, 1926, and on January 19, 1946, became Deputy Principal of Queen's College.

The school learnt with pleasure that the Chairman of the Board of Governors had been elected to the Primacy of the West Indies.

The Most Revd: Alan John Knight, served as Curate at St. J ames' Enfield Highway, (London) from 1925 to 1928 when he went to the Diocese of Accra on the Gold Coast to become Headmaster of St. Nicholas' School. After nine years of distinguished service there he was raised to the Episcopate in St. Paul's Cathedral on St. Peter's Day 1937, following his election as Bishop of British Guiana. He was enthroned later in that year.

His interest in Queen's was shown almost at once, and after the retirement of Sir Frederick Seaford, Kt., C.B.E .. he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors.

The pasl year has been a most successful one for this House. What is more, our success cannot be attributed lo individuals but rather io the combined efforts and enthusiasm of the youngsters of the House who gave their whole-hearted support to their leaders and did their best at all times.

The House made an excellent effort to win the House Cricket Shield but had to be contented with the secondary honour of being the "Runners up" for the second year running. We lost gamely to Weston House, having known that we played the game as it should be played al all times - in a true sporting spirit.

Then came our first success - news that L. E. Ramsahoye, an old boy of the House, had won the Guiana Scholarship for 1949. This really proved to be the starling point for a series of victories which were soon to follow us. The House takes this opportunity of extending lo him its heartfelt wishes for his continued success in the futur e.

Next came the Athletic Sports which can be regarded as a magnificent triumph for Percival House. It was during the Tug-0-War under 17 and the Relay events that the team spirit of the House was seen to its fu llest .1dvantage.

Two of our boys earned the distinctions of being "Open Champion" and "Runner up" and it is here that special mention must be 1unde of R. C. Bacchus, a stalwart, whom the House cannot easily replace.

'J.°he other members of the House did their parts well and had it not been i or their efforts we could not have won both the Athletic and Standarki r'omt Shield.

The next major sporting event was the Aquatic Sports and by emerging Champion House at this meeting, we completed a well earned "hattrick" in victories - a truly outstanding performance by one House for one School year. Jaikaran, Taitt C., Seal Coon and Bernard S., were the outstanding swimmers for the House.

Not contented with these successes, we went a step further, for in the Football competition which has not been completed as yet we are in the happy position of being one of the finalists - thanks to our 2nd Xr which gave us 8 out of a possible 10 points and lo our 1st XI which has played unbeaten in its ;four matches so far. We shall go all out to win and so annex this shield for the House which will be its first '.w'in after quite a few years of indifferent positioning - and which will also give us the "helmet-trick" in victories.

The end of the Christmas term saw the departure of our former Captain M. S. Luckhoo. He is now in the United Kingdom where he intends to further his studies.

We take this opportunity of wishing Maurice the very best of luck.

The year which has so quickly fled by between the pr eviou s issue of the School Magazine and the present one has left Raleigh House striv ing .ralia Jtly to maintain the high traditions established during the passing years by her former members. In all activities of the school the boys have worked with that spirit of co-operation so important to the welfare of a nouse; and though we were not as successful as could be expected, yet we can iustly feel pleased with having don e our best.

This year we h ave to extend congratulations to our House m asters: first, to Mr. Beckles on whom was conferred the Master of Arts degree of Oxford University; next, to Mr. Persaud on being awarded a C.D. & W. Scholarship; and finally to Mr. Larthe, a former assistant master of this house. on his appointment as master of Weston House.

Our annual House social held during December was outstanding with its usual noise, gay spirit, and bounteous "feed", while the occasion was made memorable by the presence of Mr. A. J . McIntyre, professional .::1 cketer from Surrey, England, who had come to B.G. to do some coaching in cricket.

In the various inter-House competitions we were not able to carry )ff any of the shields and we take this opportunity of congratulating the other Houses wh ich came out on top in the several competitions. However the wealth of talent shown among th e youn ger boys in each game gives good promise for the future of the House.

Punctuality, regular attendance, and general appearance of Raleigh House members have improved considerably owing to Mr. Beckles' untiring efforts at house assembly.

To our last House captain W. Anderson, to M. F. Lowe, C. 0. Perry, and all the other members who have left sch ool during t he past year, t he House extends her best wishes for success a nd happiness in th eir new spheres of life.

With the sincere effort and co-operation of each member of the house \Ve can soon make Raleigh a shining example to the other Houses. To attain this goal should be the :i.deal of every member of Raleigh.

We have made a great attempt to fill the rift in the house's lute made by the departure of Mr.Bevis. Mr. Maudsley has assumed the duties of House Master while Mr. Tudor has joined our ranks. We hope that his stay with us will be a long and enjoyable one.

House cricket was the major activity for the first term. For a moment the situation looked bleak. We had, in the 1st XI, to ta ke the field against D'Urban House without the services of W. I. Lee, the mainstay of the team.

As a result, we could only obtain points for a drawn game. The determination of our 2nd and 3rd XI's, however, won us some matches and raised our hopes for a moment. A torrent of rain soon washed these away. The match agaipst Weston House was perforce abandoned . With it went our cricket supremacy.

Our ill-luck continued in athletics . We were placed fourth, a position due entirely to our standard points. H ad it not been for the efforts of Burnett of VA and Hazlewood - the winner of the house cup - wel would have gained hardly a place point. Our position in athletics can be attributed in part to the fact that a few of the senior boys had to take their exams in early May instead of late June. But this does not explain everything. Our prospects for the future are not very good. We must see to it that a greater effort is made in this field of sport if we are to regain our position next year. This year's football prospects, as far as Austin House is concerned, are very good. Both elevens have so far been undefeated and we ought to make a decided effort to end the school year victorious in football.

We have to doff our hats to I. R. Lam who gained two distinctions at the B.G. Scholarship examination. It is a long time since an Austin House boy has qualified for the scholarship. Our last year's house captain, J. W. Whittingham, is also to be congratulated on his winning the Bookers' Scholarship. He is at present in J amaica as an undergraduate at the University College of the West Indies. We wish him the best.

Though our efforts were good and our achievements satisfactory, there is much room for improvement. I am certain that the house spirit will prevail and that next year we shall take all before us. At least, we must never let our determination lag for a moment.

Once again it is time for us to cast a retrospective glance over the activities and achievements of D'URBA::-f HousE during the school year extending from September 1949 to July, 1950.

Perhaps, we may have been outshone at times by the other Houses, but we have no reason to be ashamed of ourselves; rather we can tak~ pride in the excellent spirit of teamwork which pervaded all our undertakings.

Our chief disappointment was our failure to gain top place in the Annual House-Cricket Competition, but our chances were marred to a considerable extent by inclement weather. However, the individual performances of several of our players were good enough to earn them places in the Case and Wight Cup Teams. Our own Vice-Captain, M. Ragbeer, finds himself in the unique position of making his first appearance in representative school cricket as Captain of the Wight Cup Team. To com-. plete a record 'hat-trick', he was also appointed the first Editor of the school's newspaper, the Q.C. Lictor, and was soon after put in charge of this yeal''s edition of the College Magazine. He has indeed proved himself a worthy son of D'URBAN HousE, and we are truly proud of him.

Again our chances of greater success at Football were lessened by the absence of several of the senior players who were then writing for an exam, but on the whole, performances reached a standard which heartens us for the future.

D'URBAN placed fifth of six Houses al the last Annual Athletic Meeting, the only redeeming feature of such a position being the magnificent performance of S. A. King, who took both the Under 15 and House Championships in his stride.

The House was also represented by E. B . John and R. L. Clarke in school's nine-man athletic team which completed at the recent Easter Olympiad.

But we emerged from our rut of mediocrity when we were placed second to Percival House in the recent Aquatic Sports Competition, with Feinmesser being outstanding with 3 firsts and a second.

However, it was in the performances of our scholars at the last Higher School Examinations that we excel1ed our colleagues - five of the six D'Urban candidates were successful, four of them gaining Intermediate Exemptions, while W. R. Chan finished as a close runner-up to 1949's Guiana Scholar, - thus it was no surprise that D'Urban boasted of 3 of the six Higher School Distinctions obtained by the School.

But even these glorious moments could be dimmed by the reminiscences of the bumper Annual House Social we had last Christmas, when we ate much, drank much too much, and (despite all that) were very merry.

Now I exhort you all to approach the next school year with a greater determination for success both at work and at play, so that you may make D'Urban House one whose records would be proudly displayed on the walls of the New Queen's College.

During the past year, PILGRIM HousE has given a fair all-round performance.

We won the Football Tournament for yet another year, due mostly to the efforts of our first eleven, the second eleven putting in a most indifferent display.

We brought second place in our division of the cricket; but here again our second eleven was very much at fault; failing to contribute a point.

Our first eleven did quite well, and the performance of the third eleven was encouraging.

Our Christmas social again was a success, the behaviour was excellent and the entertainment good.

In Athletics we have every reason to be proud of our showing, for, from fourth position last year we were able to gain second position in both the Standard Point and Athletic Shields. This was due to the enthusiasm of the house as a whole, but special praise must be given to H. Greene and C. McGowan who were champions in their respective divisions.

The House extends its congratulations to Mr. W. H. Smith, an Assistant House Master, who has been awarded a Colonial Development and Welfare Scholarship in Agricultural Chemistry. We wish him all success in his studies and his future career.

In conclusion I would like to urge all members of Pilgrim House to work hard and like the PILGRIMS we are, to keep going ever onwards.

Early in the year we were informed that Mr. D. A. Smith, M.A. Hons.

(Auck.), our House Master for the past three years, would not be returning to us after his vacation.

It is with feelings of regret that we say "Au Revoir" to him, but wish him all the success in his new appointment as Education Officer on the Gold Coast, Africa.

Mr. J. Cameron-Tudor, M.A. (Oxon.) from Little England capably and whole heartedly filled the breach during Xmas Term and then returned t0 Austin House.

Let's now take this opportunity to welcome our new House Master, Mr. A. G. A. Larthe, B.A. Hons., who joined us late in the Xmas Term on his return from vacation in England and also Mr. K. A. L. Brown, an old boy of the school.

Now for some of our activities!

By whole hearted co-operation and kind help of our senior members, our Xmas Social was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed himseli immensely, had more than his fill and appreciated the after supper entertainment.

In the realm of sport ow· success has been so far comparatively mediocre.

Thanks to the expert handling of the teams and outstanding performance of Captain Jackman, we won the Cricket Shield, defeating Percival House in the Final. H ere mention must also be made of the bowlers, C. Lewis (1st XI) and J. Archer (3rd XI) and 2nd X I batsman Baird.

In Athletics, however, it is not much the same story. Intoxicated by early success we tended to rest on our laurels, lost our overwhelming lead, and were beaten into third place. By a herculean effort, our Open Tug T eam wrested the Tug O'War Cup from Austin House in a gruelling struggle. Deserving of special praise were the performance of H. Singh (Under 15) and J. Phillips (Under 17) who established new records in Throwing th e Cricket Ball and Putting the Shot he also carried off thf Weston House Cup. As a word of advice: Our Juniors should concentrate a bit more on the field events, especially the Jumps, and our Seniors should try to improve their performances on the tr ack. like Klautky, the young talent - Proctor, Sylvester, Miller and Crosse should be taken in hand by the Athletic Captain.

The Inter House Football Competition is still in progress.

At the moment we are lying third, but hope to r epeat last year 's performance of emerging champions.

We were most unsuccessful in the last swimming sports due to lack of enthusiasm among the boys of our house. Our swimming captain, J ohn Phillips, must be congratulated on once again winning the Victor Ludorum Cup. To our successful scholars we offer our heartiest congratulations and also to Mr. Moore on his excellent performances in the Campbell Cup Competition and on representing the Colony against Barbados.

In concluding. I would like to wish the House and the School the best in the coming school year and also say "Au Revoir" to them, the Principal and Masters. Thus I pass the torch on to a worthy successor. May it be high both in and out of school!

We Queen's we re visited by an Earl. The on ly royal vis it in the College's 106 .vears. W e rather regretted that it was not the onlv one in 107 .vears. for in that case we would have welcomed the Earl in a reall.v Cine building and with a School Band. As it was. we put up a fine show-the Cadets formed a Guard of Honour, the masters wore full Academy D ress, and their boys excha nged their customary Khaki-and-whi te for blue serge trousers and sparkl ing white shirts.

After his tour of the sixteen form r ooms. the Earl addressed th e boys. When you are a kid in the 3rd form your thoughts are taken up wholly with your lessons and games. As you go from form to form your examinations begin to assert their importance. When you reach the fifth, you wonder how it will feel to leave school. In the sixth you forget such grim thoughts in your quest for scholarship. But as you near the end of your school career you dread the coming of the day when you will have to say "Goodbye Queen's College." Now that I am no longer needed at Queen's, now that she has sent me forth on the world a finished product, I look back on the day I said goodbye with reverence and profound sense of gratitude.

The day of my departure there was a gnawing sensation in my entrails; I felt as though I were leaving the side of one I loved above all others. I felt miserable and grief-stricken at the thought that no more shall I enter those dear, dear walls; no more feel the pulse of her teaching; no more have fun in gambol and frolic within her walls ! ! ! I could gaze on this blessed school till the tears course down my burning cheeks. They say "Parting is such sweet sorrow" but oh, the pain and heartache of such parting when one shall never return unless to say "hello" and depart in haste. Yes, this is it! I can never cut atwain the bond between my "alma mater" and me; we are inseparable. I shall be with her and live with her in spirit eve11 though my body may be leagues away.

CASE CUP: The future of the colony's cricket lies in the hands of her youngsters. The British Guiana Crick~t Boa~¡d_ r:ealise~ this and th~ir decision to promote Queen's College to Fll'st Division cncket met with whole-hearted approval. Incessant rains during December, January and February restricted practice to the concrete strip at D'Urban Park. The bovs availed themselves of the excellent coaching of Mr. Arthur McIntyre, Surrey wicket-weeper batsman, whose services had been engaged by the local Cricket Board.

The first match of the season was played against a seasoned B.G.C.C. team. We lost the match conceding 5 points to the opposing club. It was a bad start but W. I. Lee (32 and 24) and L. Jackman (27) batted exceedingly well under the circumstances. Mr. Richmond surprised everyone with a well-made 77.

The match against the Police Sports Club ended unfavourably for us.

For the second time we lost 5 points. Glasford showed excellent form to score 48 and 44. Bishop scored a sound 39 and Gonsalves 27.

We were awarded a victory over Bookers' Sports Club when the opposing batsmen failed to turn up on the second day of play. They had scored 248 for 8.

Rain washed out two days' play in the match against the M.S.C. We lost, however, on first innings. Mongul made 21 and Lee was 17 not out at the close.

In the bowling, Pilgrim and Bishop were easily the steadiest. The latter felt duly elated when he dismissed Robert Christiani for only 19 runs. Latterly Duke Rogers, a Q.C. professional, has been showing good form . Leal, one of our stock bowlers, has turned in good performances with his off-spinners. Mongul, though relatively unsuccessful, has bowled steadily. Mr. Richmond an opening medium-paced bowler has not been successful but nevertheless used his experience to good advantage.

WIGHT CUP, 1949: The second round of the 1949 matches saw a much better Q.C. team taking the field. Our batting, though by no means anything to shout about was creditable.

Leal left in July and Gibbons assumed the captaincy. New-comers to the side-J. Phillips, R. L ee, M. Moore, and A. Gonsalves, returned performances which were at their best nothing more than mediocre. Phillip's bewildering knock of O runs in 5 innings was a blatant shock to the team. The rest fared less badly, Moore actually making 33 against Volunteers. Outstanding scores were made by W. I. Lee, 83 v. Volunteers, and 95 v. E.I.C.C.; R. Gibbons, 102 v. E.I.C.C., and A. Bishop 106 not out v Volunteers. Lee was unfortunate to miss his century at a time when he was easily the most prolific batsman in the team.

When we played Bookers S.C. Pilgrim was really the player who won us the malch. Routing the opposing side in their 2nd innings to secure 7 wickets for 39 runs, he and Bishop were a menace to the best o!f the:

Bookers' batsmen. In the match against Chinese S.C., Pilgrim took 6 for 30 runs and on the whole the two were the mainstay of our attack.

1950-An entirely new, somewhat inexperienced team took the field in brilliant sunshine to bowl on a perfect wicket against a seasoned Malteenoes' eleven. To say the least our performance must have baffled our most a1ident supporters. M.S.C. scored 92: Morris 4, Ragbeer, Lewis, John 2 wickets each. In reply we made 157 for 7 before rain washed out play. Gonsalves made a quick 41, Lee 32, Ragbeer 17 not out.

Batting first we made 81 against PoUce S .C.: V. P . Chung contributing quiet painstaking 27. Police replied with 80: E. John secured 5 and Lewis 2 wickets. Our second innings was a brighter, hastier affair. We made 101: Bacchus 40, Chung 16.

Police lashed up a lightning 105 for 4 to win the match outright: John got 2 wickets.

We suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of a highly-favoured P.O. & Med. Sports Club team. Our scores were 74 (Bacchus 18. Chin 15, G. Lee 13) and 94 (Bacchus 53, Chin 12.) P.O. made 173: J ohn 4 wickets; Ragbeer and Lewis 2 each.

Y.M.C.A. gained 3 points when they lead us on the first innin gs in an interesting match.

We made 179: John 34, Chin 28, Lewis 27 not 0ut, Lee and Ragbeer 15 each. Y.M.C.A. replied with 210: Chin 5 wickets, John 3. We made 42 for 6 in our 2nd innings: Lee 15 not out, Ragbeer 13.

Rain robbed us of an easy victory when we played the C.G.C. Our score was 118: G. Lee 34, Bacchus 22, Mr. Yansen 21, Phillips 16, Morris J 1 not out.

In reply C.G.C. could only muster 32 for 5 when play ceased, Lewis 4 wickets, Ragbeer 1.

We played E.I.C.C. on a sticky wicket. They made 117: Phillips 6 wickets which included a 'hat-trick'; John 2. We replied with a modest 42 for 8: Moore 19 not out, Bacchus 10. Rain swamped out the second day's play.

So far we have six points. Inexperience has been our bogey, but Mr. McIntyre's good advice was much in evidence. Our performances, though not of the best, are a definite improvement on those of last year's Wight Cup team. I daresay constructive coaching has had a lot to do with our improved all-round tactics in batting, bowling and in fielding . .JACOB CUP, 1949: This year saw us inter-collegiate cricket ch ampion for the twelfth consecutive year when we defeated Berbice High School, in the final played on our ground at Pln. Thomas on August 7th and 8th. â&#x20AC;˘ It was an interesting, at times thrilling contest. We made a modest unsafe 97. But B.H.S. could go no farther than 76 despite a stolid determined knock of 29 not out by Bacchus.

1950-A black pale of mourning should frame this account. I daresay, Wordsworth never experienced such a profound sense of grief when he wrote "Desideria" as I do penning these lines. We lost-oh dread event!

-to St. Stan islaus College in the semi-fina l played on the Malteenoes' S.C. Ground during April-a grim mockery to the match we played last year when we beat them soundly on the E.I.C.C. ground.

It was a clear sunshiny day when Bishop won the toss and decided to bat. It was a w ise decision. We started none too sweetly but a prolifir.

J ackman- Mongul 8th wicket stand paved the way for our comfortable . total of 236. J ackman had made 94 before getting out inelegantly to his bete-noir- Paloir. Mongul hit an awe-inspiring 46. Bishop played a soporifie innings for 39 valuable runs. St. Stanislaus College rudely surprised us with a winning total of 266 runs (Pilgrim 4 for 72) . Our captain die not try to sneak a victory from the Saints, instead he let our boys have batting practice. L ee hit an aggressive 49, Glasford 35, Bishop was contented to take things easy and made a 'duck' in the process. Gonsalves and Bacch us were not out. We had made 132 for 5. Our decadent fielding should take all the glory of this overthrow. No less than 9 catches were dropped at a time when we could ill afford to let even one go unaccepted! Pilgrim bowled exceedingly well. Bishop did not get the results h e expected. J ohn's few overs were quite good. On the whole the bowling was good but was marred often by an unsupporting fielding side.

THE HARRISONIANS' TOUR. Early in August last year a batch of young Harrisonions visited the city to play a series of matches (cricket and football) against the two colleges.They won their match against us by 14 runs, and also beat the combined colleges' eleven convincingly by 99 runs. On the whole their cricket was of a better standard than ours. The Williams brothers proved that they were a threat to any college batsman and they entertain some hope of playing soon for their island. Our batting gave way under the relentless impact of the Harrisonian shock-men and we seldom looked in a match-winning mood. Leal batted courageously in the first innings and our opening batsmen, Gibbons and W. Lee looked like pulling us out of the rut, but their tactics boomeranged and we lost a most interestinp; match .

Harrison College, batting first made 101: (H. Marshall 24, V. 0. Smith 21, C. W. Smith 20). Bishop 6 for 49, Leal 4 for 29. Q.C. 1st innings 62 (Leal 16 not out, John 11, Jackman 9). D Williams 4 for 10, H. Marshall 4 for 29.

The H.C. v. Combined Colleges was a solid affair. The 'Saints' players couldn't understand playing in the same team with Q.C. cricketers and they were with one or two exceptions unable to act in concert with our boys. It was a one-sided match. H.C. looked the winners from the time J. Williams bowled his first high-tension over. It was a pleasure to watch the pretty stroke-play of some of the H.C. stalwarts, notably Blackman, who made 32 crisp runs. In comparison our batting looked childish. We bowled tolerably well but bowling cannot alone accomplish anything.

H.C. 1st innings: 116 (C. Blackman 32, Bowen 19, Cumberbatch 18).

Pilgrim 3 for 22, Daly 2 for 14, Leal 2 for 20.

Combined Colleges' 1st Innings: 24 (Bishop 10 not out, P. Wight 5).

ROUSÂŁ CN.ICKET As in 1948 there were 2 divisions, one comprising Houses A, B and E, the other Houses C, D and F. The matches in the latter section were: re!-tricted to two-hour affairs as rain did most of the playing. So "F" house was able to lead after securing only 13 points. "A" house lead in their division and the final was played off late February so as to escape the heavy seasonal rains of December- J an uary-early FebruarY. "F" house beat "A" to become cricket champion for 1949.

LEE, W. I.: A fast scoring, powerful left hand batsman whose disrespect for spin bowling has caused him to fail many times. Delightful at all times to watch, he excels on the on-side. A sound fieldsman and a bowler of doubtful success.

BISHOP, A.: The vice-captain of the side, a superb all-rounder. His battting is unsteady but nevetheless sound. A left armed spinner whose slows earned him 50 wickets last season. A brilliant near-tothe-wicket fieldsman.

JACKMAN, L.: A sound, steady, and dependable bat who can be relied upon to keep an end. A useful change bowler but his laziness in the field is unparalleled.

GLASFORD, M.: A promising young batsman who is apt to lose his wicket in the first over but failing, tries to lose it in the second and the same process goes on until he succeeds. A nervous fieldsman.

LEAL, H.: A sound batsman who is at present off form. A brilliant fieldsman and a fair off spinner.

RICHMOND, T. B.: A medium paced bowler who swings the ball straight down the wicket. Is captain of lhe Case Cup team. A vicious batsman who often has not time to be vicious. An unpredictable fieldsman.

GONSALVES, A.: An orthodox and fluent stroke player whose downfall is carelessness. A struggling and perpetual sinner in the field.

MONGUL, F.: A medium paced bowler who sacrifices swing for . pace.

An aggressive bat who is now settling down at long last to score runs.

Pray he keeps it up!

A useful fieldsman.

PILGRIM, C.: A pace bowler with a breezy action, who with practice is likely to make the colony team. H is virtues in batsmanship are comparatively few. A tired and untidy fieldsman.

MOORE, M.: A quick footed player with a keen eye, but he generally uses his footwork to the bowler's advantage for he has succeeded in being out leg-before more times than not. As brave a fieldsman in spirit as he is weak in body. Has a dislike for catches especially the lofty ones, which he seldom takes and frequently avoids. · BACCHUS, R.: A n eat, lithe fellow whose bat has wielded some good scores. If he would curb his impetuosity, he may yet become one of the mainstays in the batting. An energetic fieldsman capable of stopping a few behind the wicket.

GIBBONS, R. A.: Our cricket captain who is very good at times·,· even brilliant wicket-keeper. As a batsman he is pretty to look at, but

G. LEE : An orthodox opening batsman. Has a good on-drive and his innings are always pretty to watch. Shows much promise. A fair field in-front of wicket, but is inclined to laziness which is a decided liability in this game.

V. P. CHUNG: A fair quavering defensive player, uses his eyes as few of our batsmen do. Not very forceful, should develop his off-d rive. A useful and energetic fieldsman .

J. A. PHILLIPS: Lack of confidence accounts for the shortness of this batsman's innings. A good all-rounder , he bowls off-br eaks and h as secured the first 'hat-trick' of this year's Wight Cup Season. A good fieldsman and dependable catch.

C. V. LEWIS.: Medium paced opening bowler, is inclined to set an offside field and then bowl to leg. A good deep-fieldsman and a safe catch. A fair batsman, careless of the outcome of h is innings.

E. B. J OHN: Slow to medium bowler with a deceptive, Gaskin-like actio.n .

The only bowler in the side who attacks the wicket continuously. A fair but unorthodox batsman.

Has improved lately. A fair fieldsman. Essentially an oppor tunist.

W. MORRIS: A lazy careless batsman. Energetic fieldsman who can drop catches with an amazing coolness and frequency . Makes runs by chance. A lucky bowler with a 'hippy' action.

G. M. BAIRD: The wicket-keeper of the side until h is temporary promotion. Should learn to gather more cleanly and cu rb his inclination to snatch. An unhappy batsman with an un usual amount of ill-luck.

Mr. C. A. Y ANSEN: An old-timer with a lot of experience, an asset badly needed in the side. A useful change bowler.

S. D. INSANALLY: Shows promise of becoming a good off-spinner. An indifferent batsman who concentrates chiefly on defence. A lazy unreliable fieldsman.

R. N. LEE: A fair all-rounder. Bats correctly but sometimes with illluck. A good slow to medium off-break bowler, and a safe fieldsman.

M. RAGBEER: Opening out-swing quick bowler and captain of the side.

A bit erratic and should try to control his length more. An opening batsman w~o n:iay be more successful lower down in the batting order.

An energetic f1eldsman and good catch. An enthusiastic cricketer.

DIAS CUP: After many years Queen College has at last lost the Dias Cup. Last y ear we were unpleasantly surprised when Berbice High School defeated us. Although Queen's had rather the better of the game and pressed the Berbicians most of the time, they could not get the ball into the goal. And so Berbice High School, who succeeded in scoring on one of their few raids, won the Dias Cup. We have, however, made the first step towards recovering the cup this year by whipping St. Stanislaus College 3-nil in the semi-final. Scorers were: Klautky, Van Sertima and Lee, R. N. JUNIOR LEAGUE (REED): In the "A" section of the Junior Competition for the Reed Cup, the School XI has been very successful, winning all its matches, so far six matches have been played, one remains to be played. By all rights Q.C. should be th e winner of the "A" section, and thus meet the winner of the "B" section in the final. It has been some time since the school team has entered a Junior final. But with good teamwork we should be able to carry off the cup this year.

HOUSE FOOTBALL - From the outset the issue lay between Austin House and Percival House.

The teams of these Houses were in both divisions noticeably stronger than those of the other houses.

And so it was n ot surprising that the final was at the end of the competition between these two houses, each with a total of sixteen points.

Weston with 9 points was a rather indifferent third, D'Urban House was fourth, Pilgrim fifth, and Raleigh last.

The final between Austin and Percival was drawn, no goals being scored by either side, although both sides had numerous opportunities.

The very heavy and slushy condition of the ground was, in some degree, responsible, as neither team could get moving properly. In the replay the result was again a draw (1-all). But in the second replay Austin asserted their supremacy by winning 2-1 in an exciting match which nearly, but not quite, ended in another draw. And so Austin House are the winners of the House Football Competition for this year.

Towards the end of the last school year, the school team su!Iered the usual heavy losses - Tang, Leal, Gordyk, Phillips and Too-Chung having left school. However, under the g:.iidance of Mr. Larthe an almost completely new team has been built up.

Our congratulations to R. Luck on his good performance in Suriname.

We hope that this player will not dissappoint us in the future. It is also worthy of mention that the Combined Clubs' team which beat the visting Trinidad Hockey team, contained three Q.C. players - Carrington, Chung and Glasford. By virtue of his good performance in this match, Chung was picked to represent the Colony in the second test match. It is most unfortunate, however, that this player, who turned in a really excellent performance was not played in any of the other Tests.

At the last meeting of the Queen's College Games Club, R. Lee and R. Luck were awarded hockey Colours.

The local competitions get under way at the end of the rainy season, and I am sure that our team, win, lose or draw, will give a good account of itself.

A Glance At Our H ockey Characters.

D. A. CARRINGTON:-Our goalkeeper who sometimes gives a really brilliant performance. Would be much better if he controlled his enthusiasm a little more.

I. R. WONG:-A newcomer to the team who plays right full back.

Tackles soundly and above all has a good understanding with his goalkeeper.

C. E. YHAP: -Another newcomer who plays left back. Hits the ball very hard, but is inclined to be too reckless.

G. A. LEE:-Seems to be following his older brother Billy despite his diminutive size. A very sound right half who should go very far in the game.

V. P. CHUNG (Vice-Capt.) : -This player possesses very good ball control and a remarkable amount of stamina. Plays centre half and feed s his forwards well. Played in the Second Test in May against Trinidad.

R. N. LEE: -Originally a right winger, now playing left hall with a great amount of success. Would do much better if he got rid of the baH a bit sooner.

R. V. LUCK:-Has switched from left wing to right wing. Is a very fast player with a good centre and a powerful shot. Played centre forward for the Colony in Suriname with a fair amount of success.

F . MONGUL :-A newcomer who plays centre forward. Is very fast and possesses a good shot.

Short Story

The Curse On The House Of Tillidor. (by N.C. BACCHUS) On and on down the lonely winding lane I dashed in the gathering dusk; tortured, protesting lungs gasping feverishly' for air, staggering legs str aining to their utmost, but ever urged on to still greater effort by lhe clammy beads of sweat pouring down my glistening forehead and the icy fingers of fear which clutched my spine in a vicelike grip. Never pausing once to listen for the patter of those ghostly footsteps coming closer, ever closer, with a horrible satanic persistence which defied the puny efforts of my wretched body to escape the dreadful impending doom which awaited me.

It seemed to me as if the very gongs of hell were tolling with ever increasing intensity a torrent of devilish mockery which threatened to engulf me, and drew my soul into the sickening depths of despair. I could almost feel, now, the cold paralyzing breath upon my spine, and glancing over my shoulder, behold a sight which is branded upon my soul till my dying day.

A figure confronted me, garbed completely in black with a flaming rod pointed straight at me extended from beneath the enveloping sleeve. Under the black enshrouding cowl, the ghastly pallor of death was unmistakably portrayed on the horrible wrinkled visage whilst where the eyes should have been gaping sockets filled with the devouring flames of Hell held my glazed orbs in a grasp of hypnotic power and with a scream of stark fear, as a convulsive shudder ran through its frame, I threw up my arms and sank into oblivion.

When I revived, it was to find myself confined to the limits of a whilewalled room, and as my eyes roved the chamber, someone entered the room wearing a cap with an inscription on it, and in a flash the horrible truth was revealed to me. The curse of madness placed by the old gypsy woman on the House of Tillidor, when my brothers and I had whipped her son to death, had struck once again, and th e fantastic mirages concocted by my guilty c?nscience, had driven the last member of the Tillidor famil y, to the fate so nchly deserved, and my miserable life will end in the lunatic asylum.

Table Tennis Notes (by M. M. MOORE)

There has been considerable improvement in Table Tennis during the past year. The inter-form competition aroused a great deal of interest, and many of the smaller boys concentrated on this game. This compeUtion was¡ won by VB who defeated IVB in the final. There. was a h igh standard of play in these games and VB must be congratulated on their good showing. Some of the youngsters who excelled in these games are now practising for the school team.

The College entered two teams in the Wight Cup. These teams must be commended on their performances. The "A" team was third, beaten by Barna and J ohn St. House and the "B" team was fifth . The "A" team lost once-to the J ohn St. House; we defeated the Barna T.T.C. but we were third because of p oints lost against weaker clubs. G. Wong was only once beaten and then by L. Brassington, and M. Moore played throughout unbeaten.

In the Sherlock Cup for the third successive time, we were defeated by the Y.M.C.A. in the quarter-finals. Our team which is one of the leading teams has not yet defeated the Y.M.C.A. which can be considered the best team.

Two teams visited British Guiana last year , the Trinidad Ladies team and the Barbados Colony team. Our team was successful against both of these teams, defeating t he ladies 6-0 and the Barbadians 4-1.

We must now congratulate G. Wong and M. Moore who were selected to represent the colony against Barbados. They were both successfu l in their games and our school team now boasts two colony players as well as other top r ate players. P. Kemsies must be commended on his performance against the Y.M.C.A. in this year's Sherlock Cup competition. When he was the only player to win a set for Q.C.

JOHN, E. B.: A semi-defensive attacking player who has a good backhand flick. He however loses too many points in trying out this ÂŁlick.

KEMSIES, P.: One of our best attacking players. His style worries many an opponent, and he executes a fore-arr:i dri~e strai~ht down the table. Is developing a good defence and with this he will be one of the colony's future stars.

KWOK, C.: This player worries his opponents with his side-spins. Performed well in the Wight Cup last year. Lacks confidence and so gives up easily.

LEILA : The smallest member of our team. Picked himself by his good showing in the inter-form competition. Has improved greatly and will be one of our best players in the near future.

TAITT, C.: A good defensive player who is deteriorating. Too temperamental and should develop self-control especially when playing in tournamen ts. Has a fair attack.

SHAW, L. D. : The captain of our "B" team who performed very well in the Wight Cup. Has shown great improvement and should be playing in the "A" team.

SUBRYAN, W.: Another one of our attackers. In the Wight Cup, he disappointed his s upporters by his poor display, but plays very well when practising. Gives up when losing.

WONG, G: A very good defensive player who represented the colony against Barbados. Played very well in the Wight Cup, (but was beaten by Len Brassingto n) . This year, however, he has disappointed his many supporters by his showing in Campbell and Sherlock Cups.

WONG, I. R.: The vice-captain of our "A" team. Is our leading attacking player and at some times his attacking baffles an opponent. Has a fair defence and excels in the counter-attacking game. game.

MOORE, M. M.: A ha rd working and capable captain, who is a versatile player with a very good defence and attack. He has r epresented the colony against Barbados and is runner-up for this y ear's Colony Championship. Played unbeaten in the Wight Cup Competition last year.- (I.R.W.) .

During the last school year 't he popularity of chess has risen a great deal. Most of the interest in the game, however, seems to be centred in the IIIA. and VA. At the start of the year the third formers displayed great enthusiasm and all the available sets were in demand every afternoon. Of late, however, their ardour seems to have died down somewhat.

This year the highlight in chess was the speed tournament for the Hirst trophy. Two Queen's College boys entered and they turned in a fair performance. It is hoped that more boys will enter for the colony cha mpionhsip in July.

Next year chess should rise to greater heights than ever. Plans are on foot to conduct lessons for all boys, junior and senior, desirous of learning chess. This is the surest way of revealing our latent talent and we hope that Queen's College will soon make its contribution to th e chess "gr eats".

What Has Happened to Our School Newspaper ?

On March 22, 1950, Queen's College undertook a " new and commendable" venture - a school newspaper. While it did not boast the extravagant claims of another local school paper, the Q.C. Lictor was something Collegians were proud of. They bought up the first issue and asked for more. It was promised that they would get more every three weeks. Since March 22nd some eighteen weeks have passed. What has happened to the Lictor?

At the end of the first three-week period, when her public was demanding her presence (or at least her whereabouts) it appeared that the Lictor, so recently launched, had encountered considerable difficulties on her maiden voyage and was in danger of being lost at sea. Though the delay did not dampen the zeal of the Ediotrial Staff, it at least kept their enthusiasm in check.

An announcement said that because of "legal technicalities", the good ship Licto1 would be held up for "some shor t time." Geologists might well argue that in this over-a-million year old world, eighteen weeks is indeed a short time, but school boys who must leave school at six teen can hardly be expected to look at it in that light. We all know how entangling legal red tape is, but surely college journalists, who will probably not maintain a relationship with college or journalism for all their lives, might be spared this delay.

Whatever the reason for this long respite, whoever the cause of it, we hope it will soon be cleared up. We would like to see the Lictor' resume her creditable journey before the beginning of next term.

During August 1949, Queen's College was a beehive of activity. The reason: Norman Cameron, mathematician, poet, playwright, wit, satirist, was busy with his cast producing his latest masterpiece Sabaco. The play was an exquisite satire on war, and no praise will be too great .for the man who wrote, produced and directed the brilliant piece. Costumes were elegant and the background was always effective.

The play was an outstanding success with all sections of the audience which witnessed the several performances. Proceeds were on behalf of the Y.W.C .A. building fund and the dates of presentation were September 6th, 7th, 9th and 12th.

The young lawyer was arguing his first case.

"Gentlemen of the jury," he declared, "ther e are twenty-four hogs involved in this case-just exactly twice the number in the jury box-"-(K.N.)

Sports.

After many postponements, d ue mainly to rain, the long awaited swimmin g sports were held at the G.F.C. swimmi.ng pool on Friday, 16th June, and, as usual the sun seemed i n no m ood to sh ow his face. Nevertheless, all who turned up saw some really keen racing.

In the under 13 division Cossou, Ridley, Roberts and Sullivan swam creditably and if these boys keep on swimming they should, in the near future, form the nucleus of a strong Q.C. swimming team. The older boys in the under 15 division treated the spectator s to some fast swimming, especially in the 2 lengths freestyle, when Kaufman and Bernard had a ding-dong struggle, and in the 1 length back stroke. In contrast to these two close finishes was G. L ee's clear-cut victory in the 1 length freestyle.

But the really thrilling swimming came in the under 17 and open events. These boys, outclassed completely by champion Phillips, even tho ugh he was off form tried Lo avoid swimming the events in which he took part and consequently mos t of the crack swimmers swam the same races. Then the finishes were very close and exciting as in the 2 lengths freestyle and 1 length back stroke (open) and the 100 yds. free style (under 17) . Outstanding swimmers were Taitt C. R., Van-Seriima J , (open) , Feinmesser, Chan W., Phillips J ., and Jaikaran (under 17) .

The 200 yds. open - the championship race - was won easily by Phillips, while Feinmesser, Taitt C.R., J aika ran, Van Sertima and Rhodes left the r est of a large field far behind and eventually finished in J;hat order. In the 100 yds. open and under 17 it was the same story - Phillips, Taitt C., and Rhodes in the open event and Feinmesser and J aikaran (under 17) finishing long before the others.

Springboard diving in the under 13 and 15 divisions was not up to mark - Galbraith alone showed ability.

However, with practice the youngsters will improve. Again there was keen competition in the under 17 and open sections, F einmesser, Gonsalves, Phillips J. I. F., Taitt C.R., and Rhodes giving fine d isplays.

A certain diver's interpretation of a full twist was indeed original, so much so that everyone's sides ached after his diving.

Great amusement was a lso created in t he novelty race, novices race and "12 different ways" - the sight of a strong 17-year-old boy using all his energy to no avail in the novices race was most interesting.

When at last the underwater race in which Chan H.V. and Phillips J . I. F. swam to a dead heat (each reappearing at the further end of the pool) was finished, the Victor Ludorum Cup, symbol of swimming supremacy in Q.C. was presented for the 3rd year in succession to Phillips J . I. F. b:v the Principal. The Swimming Shield was won by Percival (A) House with a total of 501h points, D'Urban (D) House being the runner-up. Prizes were also awarded for the novelty, novices and underwater races. It was regrettable that more prizes were not awarded but we cannot afford them at present; also, parents and friends could not be invited because of the very limited accommodation at the pool.

Yet swimmin g in Q.C. is on the upgrade and it will continue to pr ogress for many years to come if the present spirit is maintained.

In conclusion we thank very m uch ~ - Ma udsley through whose initiative we were able to hold the sports this year and who did most of the hard work, the G.F.C. who very kindly loan ed us their pool, the many officials a nd in fact everyone who helped to make our swimming sports a s uccess.

Is essentially a sprinter, but can swim a middle distance with Q.C.'s best.

FEINMESSER:- His success at last sports was largely due to his great determination. Should develop into a good middle distance swimmer.

J. VAN SERTIMA:-A strong swimmer with lots of experience. Specializes in sprints. Suffered at last meeting from lack of training. Has a fair butterfly stroke.

(by J. R. S. MUNROE) Our Annual Athletic Sports was held this year on Friday, March 24th. It was a beautiful day, warm and bright, with a brillia nt sun overhead; the grass "glittering green w ith sunny showers" on the wide G.C.C. grounds. Inspired by such glorious weather the many athletes ran as well as they possibly could; each bent on gaining fame and glory for himself. Indeed a good day's sports was enjoyed by the grea t crowd present which included among other distinguished personages, His Excellency the Governor, Sir Charles Woolley, K.C.M.G., and His Grace, the Archbishop of the W.I., the Most Rev. Alan Knight.

Against the great strength and skill of "Big J ohn" Phillips long-standing records were of no avail, and as early as H eats Day two reqords were broken by this mighty Hercules. H e threw the cricket ball a distance of 101 yds. 2 ft. 71/2 ins. thu s bettering his own record set up in 1949 by 3 yds. 1 f t. 51/2 ins. and in the S hot Putt he set up a new record of 39 ft. 2 ins. - truly a most remarkable performance.

Mongul, who in every race delighted the applauding specta tors with his magnificient running, ran away with the tape to beat a field including John, Gibbons and Bacchus in the 220 and 440 yds. ev~nts which are the favourite distances of the latter. However, later in the day the fleetfooted Bacchus in the highlight of the day reversed the tables on Mongul. his pal and team-mate, by surprisingly beating him in the 880; "Squeaky" finishing the race by walking in, so far were the other competitors behind chesE two stalwar ts. A large number of competitors too k the field for the gruelling one-mile even t, but all in terest was again centred mainly on the ding-dong tussle between Ronald Bacchus and Frank Mongul, the latter once more gamely bowed to defeat at the hands of the former. Ronald, showing fine form and good judgment well deserved h is gloriou s win of tr.e Senior Championship of the School. But in both of these jolly youths there are clearly shown a perfection and love of the ¡noble spor t of athletics to a high degree.

In the division of the younger boys, small , lithe McGowan (E) ran well to emerge under 13 Champ. Keep it up, youngster and you'll go far.

King of Durban House against stiff opposition from Singh won the "palman " in his division.

In the under 17 division w ith the absence of young Bacchus who was at the time unfortunately suffering from an injured hip, the sturdily built G1¡een ran away with the laurels of all distances. This fine athlete with good training and continued keer.ness can well be m ark ed as a future Sen ior Champion.

"A" House - all in bloody array - with their red and awe-inspiring jerseys easily pulled their opponents over the border to win the Tug-0-War event under 17. While the giant-sized team of Wes ton House in the Open Tug was victorious without having need to unleash th e groans and sighs .,o much peculiar in this event.

In the Old Boys' Race amidst the flying of shirts and pants as well as feet and trick-coloured socks, Mr. Gordyk in a photo-finish was inched out of first place by Mr. S. A. Klautky.

At the close of yet another glorious day of Q.C. Sports another page in the sporting annals of Queen's marked by keen, clean competition, even though it lacked the £ire of previous ones. Prizes and trophies were kindly distributed by Lady Woolley. His Excellency in a short but stirring address urged those who did not, like a Bacchus or a Mongul, carry away enough trophies and silver-ware to open a Pawnbrokery - by the way boys how is business now? - to try with undaunted courage to do better in the next year, and, with great joy to all, the following Monday was granted an after-sports holiday. Whereupon three cheers for His Excellency were called for by the Head Boy. The rousing sound was carried to the great vaults above and the sun there completing its "aetherium cursum" peeped through a darkened cloud to ascertain the meaning of the great clamour below as cheers echoed and re-echoed o'er the wide Bourda Grounds.

And with those resounding echoes we must again re-echo heart-felt chanks to Mr. J . J . Niles, Games Master, for his untiring services, to the G.C.C. for again len ding us their ground and to th e entire Staff and friends Nho h ave so generously h elped to make our Sports a success.

ATHLETIC CHARACTERS of 1950.

R. C. BACCHUS: Vice-Captain of Athletics and Senior Champion of the last sporls. A good all-rounder and undoubtedly the best spdnter in lhe school but has not lived up to his reputation recently, due to too much concentralion on middle-clistance running. He takes his training seriously and possesses most of the qualities of a fine athlete. Should he stick to athletics h e would go very far.

R. A. GIBBONS: A strong, well-built muscular sprinter who disappointed his many supporters at the last school spor ts. Possesses an orthodox s tyle and will improve considerably should h e train more. Is also a very good high jumper with quite a lot of spring.

R. M. GLASFORD: A v ery keen athlete who takes his training seriously.

A good hurdler who possesses an orthodox style. A fairly good sprinter whose chief fault is his lack of determniation and self-confidence. Must remember not to lean backwards but lean forward~ instead while spr inting .

R. L. CLARKE: A most determined middle-distance runner who possesses qu ite a lot of stamina. L ack s that extra bit of finish for h is races and is thus forced to depend too much on a steady stride. H e takes his training seri ously but needs a bit oE encouragement and selfconfidence and should be quite successful in the near future . .B. B. JOHN: An excellent sprinter with a devastating drive towards the end of his race. Did very well to win the 100 yards Open at the last school sports. Does not train sufficiently and will improve whenever he trains more seriously.

H. GREENE: Champion of the Under 17 divisioi:i at the la~t school sports and a very fit:e. all-roun~er ind_eed. H~ 1s very confident but does not train suff1c1ently. Disappointed his supporters to some degree al the last Easter Olympiad. Has a very fine future in athletics should he train more conscientiously.

J. A. PHLLIPS: Another promising young sprinter who did well in his division at the last school sports. Lacks self-confidence. He will . surely improve if he would train more con.scientiously. .

M. E. MILLER: A well built athlete and a fairly good sprinter. He 1s much more successful in field events than in the flat events. He shou ld specialise now in these events. He will improve as a sprinter if he trains much more seriously.

S. A. KING: Champion of the Under 15 division al the last school sports.

A promising sprinter who trains seriously. He should keep it up.

H. SINGH: Another promising all-rounder of the Under 15 division who trains seriously but is apt to overtrain. He is very determined and will improve ~hen he learns to use his judgment to better advantage.

McGOWAN: Under 13 Champion at the last school sports. A dimunitive but lithe sprinter who shows much promise for the future.

N. BACCHUS: Handicapped at the last sports by an injured h ip. An excellent all-rounder with a leaning towards the middle distances.

Trains seriously but must be careful not to overtrain. He is very determined and confident and possesses a fairly good stride and sound judgment.

J. I. F. P HILLIPS: "Big John" to us and as big and powerful an athlete as the name suggests. Did extremely well in breaking two records fo r field events in h is division at the last sports. He is seriously advised to specialise in these events.

F. E. MONGUL: Captain of Athletics, and runner-up for Senior Champion at the last sports. An excellent all-rounder, but much better in distance races. Does not take his training as seriously as he should . Undoubtedly th e athlete with the most possibilities in the:: school. - (R. C. B.) .

EASTER OLYMPIAD. Immediately after our Sports, a team consisting of the cream of Queen's College athletes was selected to represent the school at the Easter games. Those selected were H. Greene, J. Phillips, R. A. Gibbons, E. B. J ohn, R. M. Glasford, R. L. Clarke, M. E. Miller, R. C. Bacchus and F. E. Mongul (Capt.). These boys bore the famous black and y ellow colours, r unning under the name of the Queen's College Athletic Club, which was formed a year ago.

In the Olympiad we secured nine third places, including a third in the Open Relay evEJnt competing amongst learns drawn from the foreigners, British Gu iana and other clubs; three second places and one first place in the "B" class 1/2 mile even t. ¡ We completed the Olympiad with a total of 19 points - one point behind C.Y.M. who can be r egarded as the Champion Athletic Club,¡ as the "Arawaks" who ended up well ahead of all other clubs competed in both cycling and athletic even ts.

Altogether, this meeting has been quite a success for us, and with .r nr ever-increasing determination to emerge as the Champion Club in the very near fut ure, we hope lo do very much better at subsequent meetings.

The principle of the working of the Hydrogen Bomb appears to be comparatively simple. It would seem that Helium nuclei (containing 2 protons and 2 neutrons) will be built up from simpler particles. This fusion of Hydrogen bears a resemblance to the fission of Uranium. Both depend on the fact that Atomic nuclei do not weigh as much as the individual ¡protons and neutrons. The large Uranium nucleus weighs more than the nuclei of the fission products containing between them the same number of protons as is contained in the Uranium nucleus. Again 2 deuterons - nuclei of an isotope of Hydrogen (Deuterium) containing 1 proton and one neutron - when combined, produces a Helium nucleus which weighs less than the 2 deuterons. This "lost" mass is transformed into energy in accordance with Einstein's famous equation: - E = mc2 where E = energy in ergs, m = mass in grams, c = velocity of light = 3 x 10:0 cms lsec. ¡ A high initial temperature - approaching that of the sun (about 20 million degress Centrigade) - is required before fusion could take place. This would be obtained fissioning Uranium.

In the Pre-Atomic age, a Hydrogen Bomb was impossible because of the high temperature necessary. However, when the trial atom bomb was exploded over Alamogordo, New Mexico, a Hydrogen Bomb was possible because for an instant, the heart of the bomb was hot en'<)Ugh to fuse Hydrogen to Helium. In the bomb the materials must be in such a state that an instantaneous reaction will take place while the temperature of the fissioning Uranium is high enough.

What exactly will be the composition of the mixture is a dark secret, but this much is known - one of the chief will be Tritium - a radioactive isotope of Hydrogen. The nucleus of tritium is called a Triton and contains 1 proton and 2 neutrons. When struck by a high speed proton, a H elium nucleus is formed and energy is liberated.

Two isotopes of Lithium - Lithium 6 and Lithium 7 - cou1d also be used theoretically. Lithium 6 contains 3 protons and 3 neutrons in the nucleus. When struck by a Triton, 2 Helium nuclei and 1 free neutron will be formed. Lithium 7 (3 protons and 4 neutrons) when struck by a high speed proton forms 2 Helium nuclei.

The H-Bomb then, may possibly have a central core o~ 1:J235 (or Plutonium) around which will be conveniently packed, Lithmi:n ~nd Tritium (probably as Lithium Hydride) . ~en the tempera_ture 1s high anough, this i.s resolved into speeding nuclei, shot through with n~utrons and gamma rays (light waves of very short wave length, resembling the hard X-rays) accompanied by the usual alpha and beta rays.

One of the chief advantages of the H-Bomb, is the availability of material. Uranium 235 - the active part of the Atom-Bomb - occurs lo the extent of only about 0.7';? in ordinary Uranium 238, w hich is itself very scarce. However there must be limitation in the size of the bomb (if this is any consolation) because of various theoretical and practical considerations. The power of the bomb w ill depend both on the size and the efficiency which can only be determined after explosion.

Tritium is not found naturally but is obtained by bombarding Lithium 6 with neutrons in the atomic pile. Tritium and Helium which are easily separated are formed.

The present Hydrogen Bomb may be said to mark the present visible peak of the perversion of science as a means of slaughter and destruction. in the war from which we h ave just emerged, science instead of being a mere accessory has moved into the centre of the picture. The tentative beginnings may be found in 1915 with the first use of chemical warfare as .:i means of mass slaughter and disablement.

Since then, the belligerent use of science has undergone a rapid transformation, turning it into a weapon in itself, released from afar for the indiscriminate inflicting of death and destruction at rapidly growing ranges. Who can be bold enough to say that the H ydrogen Bomb is the ultimate climax of disastrous achievement, if nations should persist in their present desperate object of using advances in this or any other branch of science to prepare in secret, each to P.xcel or anticipate others in perfecting the means of annihilation.

Not even the most optimistic of us will deny that this poor world of ,1urs is rapidly progressing to a state bordering on chaos. It has been suggested by some that scientists should control a far greater part of world affairs than they do at presen t and that they should adopt a dictatorial attitude in matters military. This is unwise. For this world to derive the best benefit, there seems to be a need for numbers of men of a type which today is scarce but not unknown: those with a thorough scientific ed ucation and yet well versed in pr actical affairs.

Collaboration is of little use - for the very fact th,1t a ma n undertakes to do 1esearch is indicative of a stron g individualism which is intolerant of collaboration even wh en sincerely sought. The scientist views with profound contempt, the loyman who ventures into what he considers his own sheltered preserves while the diplomatic expert (or such) thinks that the scientist is of litll~ value as an adviser bee .use of his secluded life.

The l~adershlp of tomo1:row'~ _world will be in the hands of young men now m colleges and universities. But emerging from that narrow pedantic atmosphere of w hich most schools are proud, are they fit to lead?

The school must be a micro-cosm of society from which the individual comes, not filled so much w ith learni ng but more w ith a sense of human values. Only there w ill we see that flowering of th e Arts and Sciences ,vhich is the hallmark of true progress.

by I. A. Welch I had studied late that night preparing for French exams of the following day. When I went into the bedroom my father was already asleep, so, pushing him gentlY. I made room for mY:self, for we slep_t ~n the same bed.

It was a somewhat old-fashioned bed with none too artistic brass-work a t its farther end.

L ying down I regarded the shadowy outlines of this brass ornamentation, when imperceptibly by some queer tri_ck_ it took on the ?hape of. the front steps of our house. Moreover, I was s1ttmg on the steps m the bright afternoon sunshine looking attentively at an aged man who came slowly up the street and finally turned into the path that led up to our house. He had a foreign air about him, and as he approached the steps where I was .sittincr I asked him who he was and what he wanted .

FI~ promptly broke into a mixed volley of F rench and English, from which I understood that h e was a French refugee who was seeking lodgings for the night. Now this alone would normally be cause for astonishment, bu t I appeared to be perfectly at ease and answered in my best French I had been at Queen 's for some time - that my mother would be willing to lodge him for the night.

Hearing the sound of the voices, my mother looked through the window to see what was the matter.

I repeated to her the Frenchman's tale with his request for lodgings for the night. My good mother seemed ready to refuse, but I hastened to say, "Oh mother, you really can't send away the poor man, and besides, it is only for tonight." And indeed, the man was in a pitiable state, for his shoes and clothes were dusty, and his face appeared tired and care-worn. The real reason for my charitable attitude, however, was t hat I hoped to be able to improve my Oral French by conversing with the stranger during the time he stayed at our h ome.

My mother reluctantly agreed, and so I invited the refugee to come upstairs so that we could converse with each other, while a room and refreshment were being prepared for him. His thanks to mother and myself were profuse. We spoke for some time in French on several matters and then I made some remark about his shoes. The effect of this on h im was remarkable.

He sprang up suddenly and muttering curses began to advance towards me. I jumped up also, and started to back away from him, racking my brain to discover why a simple statement about his shoes .should so anger the Frenchman, and indeed it was evident that he was very angry, for his face was contorted w ith r age and a dreadful light was in his eyes. Then he drew a knife seemingly from nowhere and continued coming towards me. I had backed almost across the room by now, and looked wildly about for some means of escape, for it was clear that pleading with him wasn't getting me anywhere.

There was a door in one side of the room but he would certainly strike me down before I reached it. To call for help was also impracticable, for my mother and sister were in the kitchen, and there was no one else at home. Now my feet jammed against the wall and I knew that something had to be done quic kly, for I was literally with my back to the wall. The refugee was now scarcely two feet away from me. I broke into a cold sweat. H e raised his knife. The blade gleamed wickedly. It started to aescend. Desperate now I lashed out viciously at him with my right foot and I must have kicked my "old man" pretty hard, for he promptly and .S(â&#x20AC;˘undly slapped me back to reality. I had been dreaming.

The past twelve months have been marked by changes bot,h j?yful and lamentable; but being part of the brotherhood of scouts we smile under all difficulties' with the hope that we may once again attain that high standard of profici~ncy which had been reached by the members of the Pack in J u ly 1949. Our numbers are not what they were last year; but since every member is showing interest, the records of the previous Pack may be surpassed shortly.

At the beginning of the school year in September 1949, Mr. Gordon Cossou, who had graduated from the cub class conducted by Mrs. Martin, the Colony Commissioner for cubs, joined us. Owing to his efforts, a regular Saturday afternoon programme has been instituted. The Pack works as usual on Wednesday afternoons. The additional afternoon proved vital because all the senior members of the 1949 Pack have been made full scouts, thus necessitating our starting all over again. In addition, two other senior m~mbers of the previous pack have left the colony. They are Sixers Sparks and Watson.

During the first two terms, owing to the heavy rainfall, much outdoor work was not done, nor were any hikes possible. We however, took part in the 'Revels', a meeting of cubs for the purpose of competition and amusement, and were honoured with second position in the tests. The Colony Commissioner has visited us twice, and we are looking forward to another visit before the end of the Summer Term.

At present the strength of our Pack is sixteen of whom only two are qualified first-star cubs and the remainder tenderpads. There are two recruits.

Without dou bt, the visit of Mr. Dahl, the representative of the Boy Scouts Association on April 27th, 1949, has invigorated the cub movement in British Guiana, so much so that the silly habits common to cubs are gradually disappearing, and cubs are now disciplining themselves, working in their respective Sixes harmoniously, all because they believe more than ever that B.P. realised that there is a virtue in the cub movement, which could only be brought out by a devotion to duty,

CADET During this school year there has been a marked development of interest in the corps, which consisted of 36 cadets and 2 officers at the beginning of the school year, and has at present 49 cadets and 2 officers.

At the parades held Tuesdays and Fridays of every week, the attendance had been on the whole satisfactory. During the autumn and spring terms instructions were received from Warrant Officers Elsbury and Lawrence of the B.G. Volunteer Force, and in the summer term from Police N.C.O's and Warrant Officers of the B.G.V.F. Indeed, this has been a most eventful year for the corps, a year in which some of the keen interest and fire so peculiar to cadets of previous years has been recaptured.

Autumn Term: During the August holidays the corps took part in many activities.

On August the 10th, there was a competition shoot between 4 cadets from Queen's College and 4 cadets from a Harrison College Touring Team.

Total score was:-¡ Queen's College-276 pts.

Harrison College-243 pts.

In this competition L icpl. Low-a-Chee scored 76 points out of a possible 80 points.

The eagerly awaited Cadet and Scout camp was held at Mackenzie from August 20th to 30th. By frequent incursions into the w0ods bordering this little city, and by our visit to Bucktown at which an entire day was spent, and to other places of interest, useful lessons in open-air camping _and field-craft were gained.

The eleven cadets who had attended the camp received some experience of the hardships, responsibilities and pleasures, the training in independent living that a camp affords.

Cpl. Phang attended the Volunteers' Camp at Atkinson Field held from 24th September, to 6th October, and 2nd Lient. Smith joined the camp on 29th September. This camp afforded first-class though arduous training for cadets, and it would have been much better had more cadets attended.

Many promotions were made at the beginning of the school-year to replace the NCO's that had left: Cadets Muss, Clarke, Jaikaran, Mu nroe, Rhodes and Cameron were promoted to the ranks of L lcpls.; L lcpls. Phang, Low-a-Chee, and Miller to Cpls., and Cpl. Nurse to Sgt. The Armistice Day Parade was well attended, and the cadets stood up well to the strain, many being young lads of 14 and 15 years.

Several Shoots were arranged for the open and miniature ranaes during. the term, and in the Clementi Cup Competition, we securd 2nd plac with a total of 278 pts., thus falling short of the Police Depot "A" le:-:im's total by 9 points. The Corps was represented by Cpls. Low-a-Chee and Phang, and Cd ts. Rhodes and Phillips.

indeed to be p laced 3rd in the individual competition for the Blackwood Cup with 81 points.

In the recruits' competition for the President Cup Sgt. Nurse secured 5th place with a score of 23 out of a possible 28 points.

Throughou t the term the rifle and foot drills were gradually brought up to standard by the ever watchful W.O. Elsbury.

Spring Term: Ten cadets were selected to attend a special Junior Training Course at the Drill Hall, Eve Leary under W.O. Elsbury of the B.G.V.F. Instructions in shooting and drilling, cleaning and maintenance of the rifle and general field-craft were received.

Although the course lasted only one week there was a marked improvement in the drills and certainly in the military knowledge of those cadets who had taken the course.

It was hoped that they would pass on some of the knowledge gained to the rest of the corps, thus effecting a general improvement of the Q.C. cadets.

For the royal visit on March 14th ¡o f Princess Alice and the Earl of Athlone to E.G., the cadets took part together with the scouts and volunteers in the lining of the streets that led to Government House. Cadets were afforded the golden opportunity which many of their predecessors perhaps envied, of forming the Guard of H onour for the Earl of Athlone when he oaid the school a most memorable visit on March 17th. The smart r ifle drili of the corps and the sword drill of the officers were highly complimented both by H.E. the Governor and by the Earl himself, who is an old soldier of high repute.

At the end of the term a few members of the corps took part in the L.F.R.C. mid-year meeting.

Cdt. Phillips was 4th on the 300 yds., and L !cpl. Muss 4th on the 200 yds. ranges.

Summer term: At the beginning of this term a few promotions were made: 2nd Lt. Smith to Lt.; Sgt. Nurse to C.S.M.; L cpl. Jaikaran to Sgt.; L jcpl. Clarke to Cpl; and Cdt. Phillips to L jcpl. Lt. Smith well deserved his promotion.

To raise the tone of the corps by competition between two groups, it was divided into 2 platoons: No . 1 platoon under Sgt. Jaikaran consisting of 3 sections and No. 2 platoon under Cpl. Clarke of 2 sections.

Another section comprised of recruits will soon be added to No. 2 platoon . to make it a full one.

We were not allowed to take part in the King's Birthday Parade this year but we were, however, invited as spectators. We do hope that in future years we would be able to take part in this parade as of yore.

In closing we would like to mention that we are most thankful for and appreciative of, the willing services and interest of W.O. Elsbury, by dint of whose guidance and unwearying efforts there has been shown some improvement in the corps. Moreover, we do trust that the cadets and recruits, with the words of encouragement of the Earl of Athlone still ringing in their ears, will continue their march ever onward on the road of improvemen t, and that the Q.C. cadet corps will regain its status in strength and drill among the other Forces of the Colony.

V\lhat Scouting Does For The Boy. (by L. R. M. KERRY) When a boy becomes a scout his parents probably ask the question : "What does my boy gain from scouting?" The work of the scout.1:1ovement is two-fold. Its chief aim is to develop in the boy such qualities as would enable him to bear himseH successfull y thro ugh life. And during this training he will have gained an insight into many arts, which make his scouting life a very pleasant one.

Before the boy becomes a Scout he must be able to tie a few knots, to whip the end of a rope, to recognize some wood-craft signs, to hoist and break a flag, and to render some first aid. He m~st. also know how the Union Jack was formed, and above all he must be willing to obey the S~out Law and to keep his Promise. Having become a Tenderfoot, he is trarned for his Second Class badge. This is not so easily gained as the tests include fi re lighting, cooking, first aid and knotting - all of which take some amount of practice. At this stage the scout may work for proficiency badges. There is a badge for almost every hobby and craft a boy may be interes ted in. Depending on his ability he may now work for the higher and more coveted badges.

It must not be believed that the standard of work done to gain these badges is low. First Class First Aid demands a thorough practical knowledge of the treatment of fractures, shock, haemorrhage, burns, and many things of lesser importance. And this is only on test!

This, however, is only a part of the work of the movement. It aims also to develop the boy's mind along ideal lines. Among scouts, team spirit, brotherhood, honesty, human charity and self-confidence are eviden t.

Selfishness and shyness are unknown. These factors determine the strength of the troop; and these are the things which bear good fruit. It is a common thing to see scouts helping at fairs and concerts. They come in contact with many people, and with the greatest of ease and steadiness they do their work. At Christmas, scouts have a "bob-a-j ob" day to earn money for the p oor children. Casting aside any possible idea that would dissuade them from working, they polish and sweep floors, weed gardens, paint houses, and do any such odd jobs. When the job is done, the scout's h eart swells with pride - he has done his good turn.

It is at the camps, however, where we see these good qualities developed to a h igh pitch. The good sc(r:.1t learns to erect a tent, and to make it a comfort.able home. H e also cooks his meals in the open air and, in general, he becomes. more closely _a ssociated with Nature. The camp site is always clean and tidy, a fact which accounts for the orderliness in the habits of a good scout. Under the direction of the more experienced scouts, the boys use their own initiative and skill to erect camp tables, plate and cup r acks and other gadgets which the ordinary boy would be unable to make'.

Nature provides the materials for these gadgets. By this the scout learns to use his own initiative, and it inspires self-confidence. At camp also he learns to be "a brother to every other scout no matter to what country class or creed the other may belong." ' Should the scou t ~e able to assimilate the fine things that scouting endeavours t.o teach him, he would be properly equipped to weather the s tcirms of this life.

There were ten meetings of the Queen's College Literary and Dramatic Society held during the period September 1949 to March 1950. The meetings were fairly well attended throughout and a welcome in terest in the activities of the Society seems to be growing among students of the lower school.

The new vigour and life of the Society is due mainly to the interest and zeal of Mr. Cameron-Tudor, who by his quick and lively wit has been the life of many of the meetings. Indeed the Society owes him a debt of gratitude for thus identifying himself with it, since his arrival at Queen's College.

Special mention must be made of the meeting of November 18, 1949. which took the form of "play-reading". This meeting which was a great success, was the suggestion of Mr. Cameron-Tudor and it is hoped that in the fu ture "play-reading" would occupy a prominent place among the activities of the Society.

A Social which took place on the evening of December 10, 1949, was also a success although the inclement weather prevented the attendance of some member~.

The post of Arts Sixth Representative is vacant owing to the fact that the Representative elected is now "a prominent member of the Fifth F orm." ¡ All in all this Society had a very successful year and it is hoped that an even brighter future awaits it.

Proposition: Messrs. Ragbeer and Gibbons.

Opposition: Messrs. Jaikaran and Barclay.

When the debate was thrown open to the House and votes taken, the results were: for the Proposition Party 5 votes, for the Opposition Party 14 votes. There were 10 abstentions.

4. October 29, 1949.

This was a special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Society to revise the rules of the Society and to make any amendments thought necessary .

"Musical Evening." Recordings of pieces of music by some famous composers were brought by Mr. Allsopp, and a few j azz r ecordings by Mr. E. B. John. Mr. Edgehill's record-player and amplifier were kindly lent for the occasion.

November 18, 1949-"Play-reading".

Selections read were Acts I & III of "Importance of being Earnest" and Act II of "A Woman of no Importance", both plays by Oscar Wilde.

This was a very entertaining programme.

7. December 2, 1949. (i) Discussion of the amendments proposed by the Executive meeting of October 29th. (ii) Impromptu Concert. Mr. V. P. Chung playing the mouth organ and Mr. Cameron-Tudor singing: "I passed by your window" were outstanding in their performances.

Proposition: Mr. L. Charles and Mr. L. F. S. Burnham, Barrister-at-Law. Opposition: Mr. J aikaran and Mr. Cameron-Tudor. (ii) Social for members. The menu consisted of chow-mein, icecream, cider and soft drinks. Owing to the very inclement weather, many meml:crs found it impossible to attend the social.

Among these was Mr. Thom, to whom was entrusted the task of bringing the cak es. Member s who attended therefore swore vengeance on Mr. Thom, whose absence they considered unpardonable.

A very enjoyable evening was spent by those who attended.

9. February 17, 1950. (i) Continuation of the discussion of the amendments of the rules proposed by the Executive meeting of October 29, 1949. (ii) Discussion on "The Recent Floods". At this meeting, there was a suggestion by the Minutes Secretary that a Roll-Call of members be instituted.

Last year's editors thought out loud but their thoughts were .. .... This year, the editors, of more modest resources, care not to obscure their wants and state quite frankly, that their attempts at this hazardous undertaking, if they would be coherent, would read something Wee . ...... .

THE EDITORS TRY TO THINK.

The editors of a Magazine, especially a school Magazine, are like any American Presiden t, uncomfortably exposed to the "risks of the profession."

Without warning a bullet may slip through their skins and write "the end" over their lives. But this is a glorious end in comparison with this indig nity Yours truly had to suffer. A member of the fifth form (you all know him, or at least have heard of him) wrote a trick poem in the "Sordello" fashion .

The biggest brains of the School failed to fathom this deep thinker's meaning. Necessitiously, the incomprehensively invaluable work has had to be rejected. Now the wretched poet's face is clouded with "unhappy melancholy sadness" for force has proved unavailing to editorial toughness.

Pluck up, sad heart, and let they face bear a pleasan t and manly look , for , yo u know, one of the dailies WILL print your stuff!

Skinfish is all around the place. Skinfish Nebu, the great calypsonian, h as even composed an unassuming but virile calypso on the theme. During free periods certain sixth-formers, to wit, Sleepy, Ronnie and Monkey, practiced assiduously to m aster th e said composition. They sang, or to be more precise howled, out the tune to the discordant drumming of Monkey and the " ou t-of-time" rattlings of Sleepy. At a recent concert in which they sang this num ber, as an unpleasant surprise, they were encored for the benefit of a celebrity, a skinfish fan, who arrived late. We und erstand that the gentleman regretted his hasty r equ est, but only too late, as skin fish had already gained possession of his body and soul. $

The sixth-form nuisance - J. S. M. Midge - has grown an inch taller since his rival Bones started stretching him a year ago. It is said that Midge's stature is due to the stifling atmosphere of the P awnbrokery wherein he was nurtured and brought up (or down) . *

Things are happening. One day in the Library during a Latin period .

Becks suddenly launched out on an immaculate criticism of Bones' erratic bowling length and in the same breath of the "third-class road" the Windians had to contend with at New Stratford in Angleland. Before any of the dumbfounded hearers had time to catch their breath the Windian captaincy came in for lashing criticism, Grant's captaincy in Australia was severely praised and when the harangue had ended and the speaker departed, Black Cross workers (it was Red Cross Week) had to apply artificial respiration on sixteen sixth-formers.

There are in Q.C. three giants, one shapely, another unshapely and the third somewhat resembling an aged telephone post. They delight in reviling masters who are incapable of retaliating because of their opponents' brawn. Count Fosco, however, claim he has an answer to their problem: he tells them they'll all fail their exam. and when they try to batter his brains he says with finger uplifted: "Tut, tut, but I can make you pass if you allow me to teach you." They're all docile animals now. :;:

Before results of last year's School Certificate Examination were published, Libber Lips of VB stated that he will receive credit in every subject ;;ave Latin in which he'll get a distinction, because he did some extra work.

As it turned out the poor genius failed everything but Latin in which he passed. Said the Chief: "Jolly lucky of him he did that extra bit." ,::

The debate between the Q.C. Lit. & Dram. Society and the B.H.S. Debating Society was a keen and colourful affair. The female speakers read their points w ith amazing clarity and sangfroid, considering the Adonises present (or should we say Plutos) . The leader of the opposition (Q.C.) said a bewildering nothing and wasted 12 minutes in the process.

"How comely and how reviving it was to the spirit of men long oppressed" when he sat down ...... It was a good sign to see boys and girls in friendly rivalry, and the minutes secretary had this to say on this debate : "It was a step in the WRITE direction."

We shall shortly be moving into our imposing new building. The masters are trying hard to stage the Gilbert and Sullivan satiric opera.

"Iolanthe" on the opening night. Talking about the new building raises the question of inter-form transportation and communication. These are essentials as no federation of forms can achieve anything with inadequate means of communication.

Some of our boys will be leaving for Jamaica to gain the U.C.W.I. in October. We wish them the best of everything and hope they will continue to uphold the glorious name of Queen's College wherever their scholastic attainments may take them.

March 22nd saw the materialisation of "a new and commendable venture" for Q.C. The appearance of the "Q.C. Lictor" was a bold and laudable achievement. The editors went further - they advertised for subscriptions - some came. Work was started on the 2nd issue when a malevolent rut in the course checked their speed-for good ?-only the Attorney-General knows! It turned out we had broken a law passed some time in the 1830's and it would take a few days to straighten things up.

Three months have passed and the "Lictor" is fast becoming a dead venture.

Pity the poor "fasces" and the attendant-less "imperoratores"!

We have quite a few wits in this institution. During the inter-sex debate early in June, the Public Ignorance Officer (Q.C. Ltd.) remarked that he was¡ struck by the girls' figures (they had quoted percentages with affected accuracy) . The roar which greeted the remark sounded something

like an atomic explosion - only it was more prolonged and less purposive.

The gentleman h astened to temper h is appropriate though untender pun .. .

Later he was observed reading "How to make Love - a simple 3-month course!" ... . . .. .

Sir Gib was highly indignan t when he was put in deten tion by a wellmeaning prefect. Remarked I.H.D.H: "Don't worry, Gib,, your time will come; by the time you become a prefect, R's (the prefeet's) children will be coming to school .... .. " Soppy is making a name for himself as an actor. Recently he shone as the Duke in "Vlhile the Sun Shines". He convinced the audience that he kne~ all (or nearly all) about women until he saw Mabel. Then he really got a chance to do on stage what is impossible off-stage. What a pity for him all the world's not a theatr e-stage. How he beamed at Mabel. How she glared at him ! Cou ld you wonder at his ensuing despondency? +

Skinfish is here to stay, according to its staunch suppor ters. In the poster competition, Chooch won six months' free supply of curried cuirass as second prize; whilst Shoe-a-hoe gained a year's supply of the raw product for the third position. I don't know what the first prize winner - a Convent interne - received. Rumours say it is a free course on how to prepare tempting and repelling skin-fish dishes !

* It was some time before the Higher School Examination , and school had not closed as Yet for the Easter vacation. All aspirants to the Guiana Scholarship were, with a few exceptions burning and drinking the midnight oil. We thought it was still a bit early for this sort of rashness bu t examinees cannot think. One lanky historian of the sixth noted for h is ears, went so far as to start singing at his work; and o'er his librar y bending h e was heard to wail: "I'll go to bed Manana, but I got to work tonight Manana, manana, I'll go to bed Manana ...... "
