FOREWORD ¡ The Editor has asked me to write a few lines for the issue of the School Magazine about to appear-our yearly effort, which I hope will appear more frequently when conditions return towatds normal.

The past year has seen the School and its ai;tivities running in much the same way as in peace time, in spite of various Staff changes and delays in getting our books and stores from England. We have been glad to welcome as Masters ~ number of Old Boys who have come forward to fill the places of the men engaged on active service with rhe Forces.

During the year the war has claimed as its victims several of those who knew Queen's College in work a¡nd play. We mourn tbe loss of Old Boys and one of our Masters-Mr. Weston, Pilot Officer in tbe R.A.F., who was accidentally killed in August last.

In this struggle such things must be, we know, but let us see to it th.:t their sacrifice has not been made in vain-by our determination to create a new spi~it of brotherhood in the brave new world which is 1to be your heritage in the coming years of peace. To your generation will fall the task of repairing the damage caused by the present hostilities and of ensuring that never again shall the shadow of war darken the fair places of Earth.

A great opportunity;ind I know that the sons of Queen's will take their share in seeing the job through.

We are very happy this year in being able to publish another volume; nf the School Magazine, and we must consider ourJelves most fortunate in that we can present a bigger and, we hope, a better issue, in which pictur.es, even though in limited number, once more make their appearance. This increase in space has brought its obvious responsibilities, for space is a verr valuable commodity in wartime.

The first responsibility rested on our con tributo!s, and we cannot say that we are entirely satisfied. The efforts submitted justified our expectations neither in quantity nor in quality. and, therefore. too much otherwise unsatisfac~ tory material found its way into our pages. We remind our subscribers that since we have offered valuable prizes to no purpose, the remedy is entirely in their hands. Therefore the magazine can not be said to be typical of the school's ability. However, the one or two worthwhile efforts will commend themselves to our readers. To the Juniors, who have been too dilatory io invoking the Muse, we repeal: Byron's words :

"'Tis pleasant sure to see one's name in print." and declare ourselves ready to welcome the initial efforts of a Browning or a Dante.

The second respomibility fell on the Staff, and we are glad to say that, in this respect our hopes were not ill placed. The story of the staff is o riel of accord and cheerful co-opera'tion, and as a resul t the work was greatlr expedited. We will ask our contributors and the School Officials t o send in their notes in a more presentable condition, and so save the time, energy, and patience of the members of the Staff. This, too, will serve considerably to bring forward the date of publication.

There is one section- an all to~mpc>rrant section-of our staff of which we must make special note, and that is our Advertisin.g Section, which wa~ under the capable management of J. E. P. Cox. We heartily appreciate the efforts of its ~mbers to se.cure advertis~~~nt~ from firms and business places which suffer from inevitable wartime shortages, and whose natural tendency is to hold up their advertising. Without the help of our Agents we w ould not have been able to balance the budget, but we hope that in future issue~ their zeal would not be required, for advertising places great dem.ands on our space. The absence of advertisements will leave considerably more room in which our ambitious poets and prose writers may well display those literary talents which we know to be latent in most Collegians-both in their vigorous youth and pedantic old age. To the Advertisers, and to the system by which we are assured a minimum circulation, we attribute the success of the magazine from its financial viewpoint.

There is no need in th is colum n to review School activities, 1943, f.o~ this subject is fully treated in "The Year in Retrospect." We can tbereford afford, with the permission of our readers, to devote our remaining space to rhe prospect which is now ever o much brighter than during those dark and b'r er ye rs that followed the chaos of 1939. The impact of the war can easily be trace in our columns-Cadet Notes, Civil Defence , Sport News.

Speech Night, etc., and in the general tone of our poetry and prose; but the note most welcome, and as readily to be appreciated, is the air of quiet assurance that the day is n ot far off when the shells no longer will shriek ove~ the battlefield, and brave men-our gallant sons among them-will no longer be called upon to lay down their lives. What hopes do we entertain from Victory; what future does Peace bold for us in store ?

We in Q ueen's College have a ready answe.r. For many years there has been nurtu red in the breasts of our Old Boys a fond ambition for the erection of a new school building capable of providing a modern curriculum to a large number of boys . For one reason or another this ambition has not been realised, but it is now understood that the new building will have to bl!! deferred until after the war. Frnm Victory and Peace, therefore, an institutio n which is pouring forth her sons ungrudgingly and unfi.incbingly, looks forward to a magnificent building, the pride- of the whole West Indies-at \mi!din.g that will be a Symbol of the Reconstruction, and our own high repute,

hallowed b y a century of glorious service. We flatter ourselves that we have tbe support of the people of British Gu1ana, in whose service Collegians have dedicated many a distinguished career, w hether it be in the Wars, in the Public Service, in Sport, or in other important fields of human endeavour. Therefore Queen's College can look forward with confidence to the post-war years for an earnest of great things in a Better 'Land.

Before we close this column we desire to express our thanks to G. F. Baldwin, Esq., our Censor, to Mr. W. A. H. Knight, an Old Boy (for a copy of the photograph of the late Mr. F. T. The Year in Retrospect.

The year 1943 is: a year on which Queen's College, Past and Present,, can look back w ith pride, for undoubtedly, it has brought us success not only on the Games fields but also in the sphere of intellectual effort. No less real is the damping influence of the war- then completing its fourth year-on school activities, but we doubt whether its effects were not most noticea·ble on our staff.

Mr. C. E. Hamshere, Senior H istory Master, and popular, forceful Games Skipper, left during the Summer Term on active service with the B.G. Battalion of the South Caribbean Force. He however managed to devote some of his energies to his classes, and he held on until the end of the School year.

Mr. J. J. Niles, one of the best athletes Queen's College bas ever produced, came to fill the breach and has been with us since March.

Our Woodwork Instructor, Mr. Lewis, relinquished his post in March to Mr. C. E. ;Barker, whose place was taken by Mr. L. F. S. Burnham, wbo has been for some years a star in our intellectual firmament. In July we bade farewell to another Old Boy when Mr. R. C. G. Potter left to take up an appointment as County Inspector of Schools. This loss was made good by the Rev. D. W. H. Pollard, who arrived at the beginning of the Autumn T erm.

The greatest loss suffered by the Staff, and indeed by both School and Colony, was the sad death of Mc. "Taffy" Weston, who was killed in ::in air accident on August 31 while pn active service with the Royal Air Force.

Mc. Weston was with us since 19 3 5, and his social, intellectual and athletic gifts had commended him to a wide- circle of friends. As a result he be.. came Q.C's. most popular Games Master, and immediately won the affection of all those with whom he came into contact. Two quotations will serve to show his popularity with the school. Ernest Eytle, commenting on •the Cricket Characters for the 1934--35! season, wrote: "MR. F. T. WESTON~ the latest addition to oar cricket, has unfortunately, to be judged, so fac, by a short bat enterprising career. Some hard drioes and palls (hitherto latent in Wales) now thrill our spectators. A useful slow spin bowler. and near in- field, he promises some bright cricket next season."

These promises were promptly realised, for in 1940, L. F. Drayton wrote : "Mr. F. T. Weston, who has led the "B" team for the greater part of the season, is a captain who inspires confidence in the boys under him. He

is a good opening bowler with slow to medium swingers, but is bettei: when he 'exploits' his 'tecri.fic'· leg-break, which ,leaoes mang batsmen up in the air-and outside the crease. Is the hardest hitting batsman of the College, and/ can be depended upon to hit up twenty' runs or thereabouts."

His repute outside the College was no less great, and despite a leg injury be played a prominent part in lntercolonial Rugby, Boxing, Racing, Y. .C.A. Athl.etic success, though not of a very spectacular nature, came us in 1943. Football does not present so attractive a picture, for we had to admit the superiority of St. ·Stanislaus College, who won 'the Dias Cbp fo Inter~ Collegiate Football. For various reasons we could not field a team fo'r the B':G.F.A. competitions. ·At home Percival House dominated the real whe're ' \ ....... foot and eye opposed in duoious st rife."

In Hockey our position was not an enviable one, for in the Knock-Out Competitions we fell in the opening match. against the Chinese, thus b omtng spectators for the rest of the competition. The influence of the war on the suppl.y of Hockey sticks is a reminder of how "total" is the "Total ar" in w.hich we are engaged.

Lawn Tennis, Swimming and Chess can be lumped together, through their very unimportance. The position of Lawn Tenni,s in 1942 gave-promise of a bright year in 194 3, but attendnace gradually fell, not only because of the competition of the other games. but also because there was a shortage of balls, which was the deciding factor. In January. a Swimming Gala was organised at the G.F.C. jl>OOl as a substitute for the loss of games due to the' inclement weather. At this meeting Austin House was once more the Champ· ion House. Great hopes are entertained of introducing swimming as an in1portant School activity, and we trust they will be realised. In Chess we won tbe McSbine Cup early ~n the year. and this bas caused a revival of interesti especially among, the juniors.

Table Tennis, despite the shortage of balls, is still an important School game, and the Schoo! team under the managcrn::!nt of Mr. , l. ::. C'~::S.cron . bas had a very successful year. In the Sherlock Cup Competition we wert successful until the Senior Finals, when we were knocked out. Matches were played at the U,S.O. against the U.S. Army and 'N:ivy in July and 0ctober, and we were each time the victor!. On tbe St:1 December a' tea m travelled to Atkinson Field and again defeated the Army 12-3, but this time after more senous oppos1t1on. The boys were all greatly impressed by the sportsmanship of the American military teams.

When Athletics is mentioned Q.C. is wont to speak wi· ', ..,.., :, ;- -c confident victory, and we can assure rhe Old Boys that it will never be otherwise.

This glotious tradition was upheld when we planted our colours on the B.G.C.C. ground in August at the· W est Indian Olympiad and proved M thousands of fans present that on Queen's Col!e"(e British Guiana can always rely for her supply of Colony athletes, a nd each year I nfore class athlet-es areadded to our impressive list;. The fact that the Inter-Collegiate Athletic Com petition can no longer be arranged is therefore a great disappointment to our teams, and we can only hope that the sportsmanship of our rivals would make these possible in future. In N ovember the Armed Forces held an Athletic Meeting and our Cadet Corps was among the teams that entered. )\!though the size of our Corps did not allow of our entering all the events we were placed fourth in the competition by securing 12 points. A week later we held our ow n Annual Sports, and despite the unfavourable weather two records were broken . This meeting was held on the G.F.C. ground. kindly loaned for the purpose by the Committee. The success of the meeting was in great measure due to the efforts of Mr. D rayton, our Games Master.

During November a successful O ld Boys' Festival was arranged b y Messrs.

D ra yton and Cameron. Cricket. Hockey, Tenni~ and Football matches were played. but tbe Old Boys were always successful. The festival, w hich lasted a week. wound up with an O ld Boys Reunion Supper on the Frid:iy evening.

At this meeting the Old Boys vehemently expressed rr.eir desire that a new school be built with increased facilities. They showed the Old School spirit by at once contributing $5 00 as part of their contribution of $ l .000 for the purchase of a cinema-projector for the school. We heartily appreciate the effor ts of our numerous Old Boys, and hope that we w ill al ways show ourselves worthy of their interest .

194 3 has been a memorable year for the Cadets, who celebrated the l_Oth Anniversary of their Corps. The highlight of the year was the expedit10n. to the Penal Se~tlem~nt _at Bartica,. where military exercises were daily earned out and expenence m Jungle figbt10g was gained. The trip lasted for over a week, and the boys greatl y benefitted from the experience. At the

King's Birthday Parade tbe smart turn-out of our Cadets earned them. the congratulations of the Governor, Sir Gordon Lethem, K.C.M.G. The Corps turned out on Armistice Day to the Drum Head Service, and maintained their high repute. During the Summer Term a Field Day was organized by Col. Hooker and Major Haywood, and for a week in October picked Cadets were seconded for Guard Duty at strategic points in the city. Owing to the war there was no West Indian Cup Shoot. "but the Hodgson Cup was shot off successfully.

Q.C's. Civil Defence under Messrs. Cameron and Barker, became a potent fo rce during the year. A team was entered for the Georgetown Area Competition for Fire Fighting Teams, and although it was the runner-up, its impressive display merited the award of special prizes at the Prize Giving.

The Scouts had a successful year in 1943, and their progress may be gauged from the fact that 20 proficiency badges were awarded. The troop took part in the King's Birthday and other Parades, and pitched camp under Mr. Durey during the Summer vacation on the island of Leguan.

During the year we heard with great satisfaction that L. F. S. Burnham bad won the Guiana Scholarship for 194 2 with distinctions in English and Latin. S. R. R. Allsopp was placed third with a distinction in French.

On the London Higher results we secured four exemptions from the London Intermediate Examinations--two in Arts and two in Science. For several years now there bas been no Speech Night, due to lack of space, but we hope that Government will remedy this situation as early as possible, it being a very urgent and humiliating one. The prizes for 1941, which had only just arrived, were distributed by the Hon. E. G. Woolford, O.B.E., Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors, at the end of Autumn Term.

A good selection of Reference Books for the Sixth Foi:m arrived during the Summer Term, and although they were exceedingly late in arriving they were eagerly welcomed. For the first time in years Queen's College possessed a Reference Library of which ir may reasonably be proud.

The several Queen's CoUege Societies have all, with the exception of the Bee-Keeping Society, disappeared, and this Society is now almost entirely in the hands of the Junior Boys. We remember, even as recently as two years ago, how flourishing were the Literary and Dramatic Society, and the Science Society, and a little longer still, the Poultry Society, the Music Society, and several lesser Societies. Assuredly their disappearance is a cause for regret, but their revival will be difficult in our present building, which we must now term "ramshackle." This further strengthens our case for a new school which will provide an atmosphere more conducive to the growth of these Societies.

The Tuck Shop is perhaps the most popular institution in the school, and the eastern corner of the Southern building is daily thronged by boys seeking refreshment at Break, at Recess, and after Dismissal. For fifteen years Mrs. Adams presided over it, and generation after generation of boys knew her for her kindness and benevolence, and respected these qualities in her. And then during the first week of the Autumn Term she died. This came as a shock to Staff, Pupils and Old Boys who regret the sad departure of one who loved the school as herself, and who was elated or depressed by the changing fortunes of her adopted school. At every cricket match "Cooky" used to be present, but at refreshment time on Sports Day she reached the zenith of her popularity. Accordingly. the memory- of a ~kind and generous heart will never fade from those who knew her, and the sympathy of hundreds of boys go out to her bereaved relatives, and especially to Miss Adams, her daughter, and successor.

In conclusion, we record the vmts of Sir Cosmo Parkinson, who was presented with a copy of our last issue; Mr. Harold Stannard, M.A. (Oxon.) of the British Council; and His Excellency, Sir Gordon Lethem, K.C.M.G., in the company of the Hon. E. G. Woolford, K.C., O.B.E.

OUR PRIZE-GIVING For the past four years Queen's College has been drawing towards the hundredth year of its existence as British Guiana's nucleus of grandeur. For four years Queen's College bas bad, through inadequate accommodation, to continue the mere impromptu prize-giving affair as a substitute for its major School Year function--Speech Day. That is to say, that for four years British Guiana bas ignored the discomfort of its nucleus, whose only crime was the absorption of a greater percentage of B.G. , so as to turn out a greater · intelligentsia for the colony. What a paradox !

It is only now that British Guiana is awakening to a fact that bas been so long clear to us-the sardines in a veritable tin.

That indomitable Q .C. spirit still stands up, however, and our PrizeGiving-somewhat late in the year- was held on December 15th. The Hon. E . G. Woolford, K.C., O.B.E., one of our eminent Old Boys, kindly consented to distribute our prizes.

Mr. Woolford, after distributing the prizes, spoke at length on the good work Queen's has been doing in producing the Colony's 'brains.' An institution such as this, Mr. Woolford thought, should have a suitable motto of irs own, from its own members. He therefore offered a prize for the best motto and another foe the best essay entitled ''What Queen's College should be like."

This bas been a successful year for "A" House in the field of sport, and more especially' since this success was achieved from sheer push and determina• tion. Indeed, within the past two years " A" House has been virtually resuscitated. We failed to retain the cup in House Cricket, though we were strongly backed to win ; yet, I can truthfully say that we made every endeav~ our to live up to ou r expectations. The fates were against us .... In Athletics however, it was otherwise, and we emerged victorious in our tie with D ' Urban House, who were the fa vourites, and whom we all but eclipsed in the heat of the eleventh hour.

We won the " Standard Point Shield" to boot-proof that our victory had been essentially an "A" House victory, or victory won by co-operation and united effort..... T hese same qualities were to show themselves in qur Football, and we were again rewa rded in a season of almosc unbroken succe'sses.

D uring the last few years Raleigh House bas been steadily slipping from its once exalted position in Athletics and Games, but there are definite signs now that, having descended to our nadir, we are once more on the up-grade.

Thi rd in cricket, third in football and last in athletics was our record for the past year. However, when the School Year opened in September we seemed imbued with a new spirit, and after a stubborn fight we finished second

in cricket. In athletics we obtained the position to which for some years we have become reconciled-last; but in so doing we exhibited to the other Houses the true Raleigh spirit of courage and resolution in the face of defeat, and of refusing to admit failure even in the teeth of continued reverses. H owever, remember "B" House, that we are the only House to have carried off the Athletic Shield fi.ve· times in succession.

At the end of December 1942 Raleigh House com,bined with "A'· House to have a very merry and enjoyable Social and "Feed. " We offer our congratulations to our late House Captain, Mr. C. A. I. Goring, on his obtaining exemption from the London Intermediate Science Examination, and also to Mr. Dummett, ao Old Boy of "Raleigh's/' on bis appointment to a professorial chair in the U.S.A. Let us also wish Godspeed to all those boys of our House who have left chese shores either for the war fronts or to undertake appointments or pursue studies in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of North America.

Considering past successes, Austin House has been very unsuccessful this last sch:::o! year in the House Competitions.

After having won the Football Shield for three years in succession we were most disappointed in losing it this year by coming second to "A" House.

In Cricket we finished last, even though our First Eleven won all its matches.

We came third in Athletics. Here we have to congratulate our Athletic Captain, Colin Bannister, for winning the Senior Championship Cup, and also for securing the most points for his house, thereby gaining the Austin House Cup.

In ou.r review of the H ouse Competitions during the year 1942-43 , we can be justly proud of the part rlayed by D' Urban Hom:e in them. asm, in my opin ion, reached a high level.

In A thletics we did very well indeed, winning the Training Competition Shield, the Relay and Tug-o' -War Cups, being tie with "A' House for the House Championship Shield, and emerging runners- up for ·th e Standard Poin t Shield. T he whole House is to be congratulated, es peciall y Jupiter, our C aptain, who emerged Senior Champion, and Parris, the runner-up fo r the Under 17 Champi onship.

In F ootball, and at t he Swimmi ng Ga a, we were not so successfu l. and we en ded up fourth in both these Compe titions. Nevert heless we played t he game with that unmistakable sense of sportsmanship which is cha racteristic of "D" House, and indeed of Queen' s College.

In concluding my notes, I must appeal to the "D" House boys, remindin.g them of the responsibilty which lies on their shoulders, the resp onsibility of emulating and surpassing the achievements of those who have p laced "D" House on a stable footing. Let us unite and leave no stone unturned in our endeavour to rout all opposition from the other Houses.

Cricket Notes

The 1943 cricket season came to a close with our Northcote Cup match on the 23rd of November. The season was quite a successful one for our coliege eleven.

Our! Garnett team this year contained many new players who can be congratulated on their performances. The team. never had to depertd on individual players to pull it through, but everybody in the ream pulled his weight, with the result that we finished third in the competition, gaining 25 points.

The ream batted well, and many large scores were recorded. We passed the 300 mark on one occasion, which was our highest score for the season;· and, I would say our best batting performance, for on more than one occasion we made over 200 runs. On the whole everybody in the team batted well, but the outstanding batsmen were Lord, Khan, Chin and Woolford.

Lord and myself were top of the averages.

The bowling was as usual w eaker than the batting. The most successful bowlers this season were Morris, Lord, Khan, Phillips and Chin.

Altogether the season was an excellent one and enjoyable to all concerned. ~ nter-Colleg ia te

In this compet1t1on we were, again victorious.

Berbice High School defeated St. Stanislaus College and so qualified to meet us in the final. The game was played on ·our groun d at T homas. We won the toss and batted first, but only made 13 6 runs, Skipper Geoffrey Lord top-scoring with 2 6 runs, Agard making 2 1 and Eytle 20. T he bowling of the Berbice team was ,quite steady, L. R over taking most of the wickets. Berbice . then went in to bat, and fared much worse than we did. T hey were completely baffled b y Cbin and Phillips' s bowling. and they managed to scrape together only 3 7 runs. On tbe following day we again went in, and this time we made 13 4 for 8 wickers declared; Morris 34 not out and Richmond 28 not out.

Lord, who bad to leave for Trinidad the same night, did not play, and Chin deputised for h im. Berbice High School. on their second venture, made 68 runs, Chin and P hillips again sharing the wickets.

The Northcote Cup. 0 In our N orthc~te Cup match we met the E.I.C.C. "A". We bad, however, our usual ·bad luck. On the first day's play the wicket was bad, and

after losing the toss we were all out that afternoon for 68 runs, the only batsmen to reach double figures being Khan, Phillips and Morris. However, the ne xt day we had rain, and the wicket was just as bad. We started late that afternoon, and in no time five East Indian batsmen were out for only 15 runs, but here our luck finished, for two batsmen held on and played out tbo2 remaining part of the afternoon. The match was continued on an afternoon during the week on a perfect wicket, and they took the score past ours without further Joss. Phillips took four wickets for 3 4 runs. The fielding of our team on the whole was good.

Cricket Characters G. LORD-Our captain, under whose leadership the Q.C. team was able to put up a good performance in the Garnett Competition. He is our best batsman, who Jived up to our expectations and played many a good innings throughout the season. He is also a good all-rounder, and although still the school's best wicket-keeper, he is also one of its best bowlers, and bas captured many wickets this season. A very good field anywhere.

J. CHIN--Still the school's best fast bowler, who can swing the ball both ways. Bowled well .in the Inter-Collegiate final, and bad t le batsmen puzzled with bis in-swingers and out-swingers. His batting has improved considerably, and he has scored consistently this season. At times a sound fieldsman.

C. BANNISTER-A very good opening batsman, who scored consistently throughout the season, and ended by being on top of tbe averages. At all times sound. Bowls well, utilising both breaks, but could do with some more pace. A fine fieldsman.-(G . P. B.) A. KHAN-The No. 2 batsman of the side. A much improved player who is at present one of the team's reliable batsm,en. Scored 113 not out against "A" House in tbe House competitions. Bowls a good length leg-break which comes off the pitch fast. He bowled well in the Garnett competition, but bas gone off lately. A good slip field .

R. WOOLFORD-The team's opening batsman, who batted well in the mate.hes ~e played, and scored many runs. Possesses some good strokes, but ts still careless. A fair bowler, who bowled well at the beginning of the season. A poor field.

T. EYTLE-The team's wicket-keeper, who still needs a lot of practice. An unorthodox batsman, who can hit the ball hard when on the go. Scored some good runs this season. Should however turn up to matches before the start of play.

P. BROWNE-A batsman with many pretty strokes, who should have made many runs this season, but owing to his nervousness on first going to the wickets always gets out before he can get off the mark. Batted well against the D.C.C., our last match of the competition, and enabled us to win it. A very slack fieldsman.

C. AGARD-The youngster of last year's school team who is now a seasoned member of the team. A batsman who needs a lot more practice. Usually gets himself out by trying to hit every ball, with the result that his usual score is nought. Has lately been playing better cricket, and should try and keep it up. W. PHILLIPS-The team's present opening bowler, who bowled well throughout the season, taking many wickets. His batting has improved lately, and he bas been scoring consistently now. Much improved footwork, but is still careless. A good catch and fair field.

R. MORRIS-A new member of the team,. The team's slow spm bowler, who got most of the wickets this season. Can bowl both breaks, which he bowls at a very good length. As a batsman is not dependable, but gave the team some good runs towards the end of the season. A fair fieldsman, but an unsafe catch.

B. PAIRAUDEAU-Tbe youngest and smallest member of the team, who is still a junior, and though hctndicapped by bis size, batted well and made quite a few runs this season. A batsman with many strokes, but who still bas a lot to learn. His batting has dropped off lately, but be should not find difficulty in improving it. A fair field and safe catch.

0. RICHMOND-Another new member of tl::e team, who played a few Garnett matches and proved quite useful. He is not an impressive batsman, but he made some useful runs in the matches he played. Our reserve wicket-keeper, who could be good at times, but still needs practice. A fair fieldsman.

M. FISHER- T::z ~- ~est addition to our team, and our present wicket-keeper, who can do with coaching and a lot of practice. Has been the opening batsman of the side lately, but does not suit that position. Has a tendency to raise the ball, and so is usually caught out. Still needs a lot more footwork.

For some reason or other football in the school bas been at a very low ebb. It cannot be that the loss of the Dias Cup in 1941, 1942 and 1943 bas produced that apathy. Collegians would blush to think so. Yet interform matches have almost disappeared and football bas become a burden rather than a pleasure. Friendly matches against outside dubs have almost ceased.

This is no time to slumber. Though we have lost Lord, L. Eyde and Davidson, we are no worse off than our ancestors when they lost Rodrigues, L. Eytle, Shepherd, etc.

Of individual talent there is plenty. Only constant practice can weld that talent into a team. So, chins op t Let's go forward together and regain that ascendancy which former Collegians bad so long maintained.

This is our Centenary year-1944. I will say no more.

Unbeatable in the air, but poor on the ground. Should learn to gather better, especially a wet ball.

In the Sherlock Cup Competition for 1940 the team was off to a promising start, achieving some successes, and was not knocked out until the semifinals.

On July 3 the team took part in a Triangular Tournament against tbe United States Army and tbe United States Navy. In this tournament, which formed a part of the Independence Day celebrations. the team s::ored 18 out of a possible 20 points, and secured 7 out of the eight prizes. G. Lord winning; the prize for tbe best all-round performance. and E. Greaves for winning the hardest match. The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves. and at the end of the performances presented the Director, Miss E. Jean Ramsay, with a book ("Baltsbasar.'' by Mr. N. E. Cameron, M.A., Cantab.1 which was autographed by the members of the team, author and manager, and by Capt. H. Nobbs, Principal, Queen's College.

There was a return match between the U.S . Army and ourselves, which we won 4 games to 1.

On the 15th December, 194 3, the ream travelled co the Air Base under the management of Messrs. Cameron and C. I. Drayton. Unfortunately, the weather was very heavy and unfavourab e for much sight-seeing. However, the Ping Pong was the keenest our team bas had against the Americans. The final score of 12: 2 gives no indication of the keenness of the contests, and the narrow margins by which the individual matches were won.

Owing to the shortage of Ping-Pong balls the Colony Table Tennis League Tournament did not take place, and we still hold the C. V. Wigho Cup. As a result of their fine performances Colours were awarded at the end of the year co C. A. Bannister, J. E. P. Cox. M. Fisher, E. Greaves and W. R. C. Phillips.

Pl G-PONG C ARACTERS OF 1943 C. AGARD-A very aggressive player who places his powerful smashes well.

Seems to have a tournament complex, however, and does not play bis true game in a match.

C. BANNISTER-Although not a very impressive player can be relied upon to win a game with quiet but well-timed shots.

M. FISHER-A very pretty left-bander who uses bis service to advantage.

Although his play is mainly aggressive be bas a very reliable defence and also, a very good back-band smash.

E. GREEVES-A very steady player who has a strong defence and can develop quite a powerful attack, which includes a ¡celling fore-hand drive.

Spins the ball quite well but pokes too much at times. Always plays his game to the finish.

G. NARAYAN- One of Q.C's. best players when in form, Gut his form, .infortunately, rises and falls irregularly. Has a very good fore-hand topspin stroke.

B. PAIRAUDEAU-A promising youngster who is not handicapped by his size. Has a very good defence and smashes at the right time.

R. PHANG--Spins the ball well, and bas a good forehand smash. take his practices more seriously.

W. PHILLIPS- Another player who plays his game to the end. Plays some very pretty strokes, especially his back-band flick, at times, but should not play to the gallery so much when these come off, for then he gets erratic. However, combining bis defensive play with a stone-wall in which he employs the chop stroke, be very often pulls off games apparently lost.

J. COX-0 r Car,ai â&#x20AC;˘ is both a good defence and attack player, who possesses great skill in spinning the ball. Although at times erratic and with too great a love for forearm smashes, Jimmy is a very steady and dependable player, whose long experience should give him an assured future in Ping-Pong if he keeps it up.-(W. Athletic Notes (G. BOYCE)

Our Sports were held this year on the 20th November at the B.G.C.C. ground for the second time. This ground was utilised, due to the shape of the track, which our Games Master thought would be more advantageous for record breaking.

King "Sol" favoured us with brilliant sunshine, and we were fortunate to have with us for the first time His Excellency the Governor, Sir Gordon Lethem, K.C.M.G. The events were keenly contested, but only two records were broken and one equalled. A new division was introduced-the Under 17. This was done so as to give 15 and 16-year-old boys an opportunity to become mature before they entered the senior division.

C. Jupiter, the Athletic Captain, won the Senior Championship, amassing 22 points.

Q. Richmond emerged as Under 17 champion by gaining 13 points: R . Parris, the runner-up gained 12 points. D. A. Ford and I. R. King were Junior and Under 13 Champions respectively.

The Athletic Shield was won by Percival (A) and D'Urban (D) Houses which tied. Percival House also won the Standard Point Shield, while D'Urban House won the Training Competition Shield. The Training Competition was introduced so as to stimulate the boys' interest in their training.

This competition, however, put a strain on the boys, who bad to run at their best before they attained their actual form.

Some of our senior boys ran at the B.G.C.C. Olympiad, and special mention must be made of C. Jupiter and C. Bannister, who did well to place in the Open events.

Inter-Collegiate Sports are now decadent, and there appears no hope that the event will ever be revived.

Before closing, I would like to record on behalf of the Athletic members of the School the deep sorrow experienced by us when we heard of the death of our ex-Games Master, Mr. F. T. Weston, who was kille4, in a flying accident in England.

"Taffy" was a gentleman, and a keen sportsman, who pot bis heart into alt his undertakings. We all miss him for the good he bas done for tbet school and for athletics.

Athletic Characters JUPITER. C. E. P.-ls at present one of the best sprinters in tbe colony.

Has proved this fact by defeating most of the top-ranking sprinters of the colony at the B.G.C.C. Olympiad. He won he Senior Championship at our own athletic meeting. He has a very brilliant future ahead if he sticks to athletics.

BANNISTER, C.- Is a very good all-rounder. But should he stick to the middle distances and become more proficient in them be would improve his various times for these events. Ran well at the B.G.C.C. Olympiad. Must learn to wait for the pistol.

DAVIDSON, L. A. -A good middle distance runner, who bas not been paying much attention to bis training lately, which accounts for bis lack of stamina. Will, however, do well in future if he trains assiduously.

RICHMOND, A. P. B .-Is still the best high-jumper and pole-vaulter in t!ie school. He must howe er convince him eif that be couici ¡ump 6 feet in the High Jump by practi.:a! and not theoretical methods.

RICHMOND. Q. M . S.-The Under 17 Champion is a¡ good all-rounder, who does equally we11 io the sprints as in the jumps. Should give seniors some trouble when be goes into the Open division.

PARRIS, R. C. F.-A very good sprinter and long jumper who was runnerup for the.Under 17 Championship.

BOYCE, G .. P .-Our present Atb1etic Captain, wbo did not place in last year's sports. as he was still a youngster, but placed in the sprints this year. A sprinter of high spirits who should do well in the near future.

Possesses a sprinter's build but could be a lot faster.- ( C. A. B.) DASILVA, M . D.-Woo the quarter~mile Under 17 in the remarkable time of 60 secs. Possesses no stride of note, but does well, due to the stamina that be builds up while training.

Regarding this magazine as a record of School activmes for the past school year, it might seem out of place to mention the Athletic Sports for this school year; the previous sports have howeverr teceived due recognition in the Athletic Notes, and moreover the events of the past calendar year seem to come mot~ under the sphere of dealings of this magazine.

Due to the loss of Mr. C. E. Hamshere, whose military duties left him no time to devote to games here in school, the interest in hockey went on the wane <luring the first half of 1943. Very few matches were played by the School XI, and amongst the Juniors there was no play at all.

At the beginning of the new school year, September 1943, an attempt -so far successful- bas been made to revive the latent interest in the game.

A number of friendly matches was played. Due to lack of practice we did not succeed in palling off any of them. The Chinese Sports Club defeated us 2-nil in a Knock~out Competition in November.

There are about 50 boys-seniors and juniors-now playing hockey.

A junior competition was played, and a keen spirit shown in all the games.

Tbe school team gratefully accepted a very sporting offer made, s:ubsequent to the Old Boys' Match, by Mr. R. E. Bollex:s, the captain of the Old Boys' te.im-to coach the team.

The team lost at the end of the last school year, several brilliant players, including G. Lord, C. Goring (Capt.), D. Edghill and J. Storey.

Colin Bannister, a fast and clever forward, is still with us, and so is Harold Edghill. The "Midget's" pk,y bas been really inspiting; a steady and hard-hitting back, he is the mainstay of out defence. The rest of the team though not individually brilliant, are all good triers, and are to be wished more success in the remaining matches during the year than they have had in the past.

-Tennis Notes -ByD. M. EWING-CHOW There is not much that I can write about the T ennis Club during the: 1942 School year. Altnough the number of members was about the same as in the previous year the keenness and standa rd of play was poorer.

However, at the beginning of the present school year a considerable number of boys applied for membership, so much so that only Sixth Formers were allowed to join. Consideting the fact that there isn't much time for tenn is this teltft 1 if tbe attendance and keenness of the boy~ keep up, tennis should improve in the school.

It is further hoped that with the help of Mr. Drayton a coach will be obtained next term, and ;;lso that annually or termly a tournament wiH be played against the masters.

Last, but not least, mention must be made of the Masters vs. Old Boys nutches. What disappointment was shown by the "Older Boys" when the rain failed to spoil the afternoon's play and thus enable them to say that the rain saved the "Old Boys" !

Anyhow, there was play, and although the Masters were beaten all around by tbe Old 13oy.s-some of whom were Colony ch~mpions-tbey must be congratulated on their fighting and sportsmanlike spirit.

Well, t must close here, hoping that the ten nis will continue to improve for the rest of this scbool year. and thereafter every other school year,

Early in the first term a meeting was called, to wl:ikb there was a very large response. There was, however, a noticeab1e absence of bigger boys-, and

the maJonty of boys present knew nothing at all about the game. We got down to serious practice, playing on every day of the week, and sc:>n mustered the courage to challenge the Masters.

Although the Masters include several good players rarely have they gained the laurels in annual struggles. On this occasion they turned the tables on us in winning.

Mr. Taitt drew with Barker.

Mr. Cameron beat Valez.

Mr. Bevis beat Archer.

Mr. Barker lost to Richmond.

Mr. Pilgrim beat Goring.

This match plainly showed us that we had still a lot to learn, bur nothing daunted, we practised just as bard as before, and the McShine Tournament found us ready.

Only three schools competed this year-Central High School, St. Stanislaus and ourselves. Central High School did not give us very stiff opposition, and we won 3 Yi-Yi. We went on to beat St. Stanislaus 3-1.

The final points of the competition were : -

Thus we won the McShine Cup, which had been lost to St. Stanislaus the previous year.

For years we have been seeking more concessions for Chess. Chess, the the only intellectual school game, offers the boy who is not athletic a chance to do something for his school. I would therefore suggest that in future this game be put on the same basis as cricket and football, and see no reason why the Games Committee should not see its way to present a shield annually to the Champion House, and to awarding colours on the same system as for cricket and football.

We w ere going up to the Americ,m base al Hyde P ark to play a series of T able Tennis matches that night against ~cmc of the Army 'boys.' Our t eam had beaten the Army t wice before at tbt U.S.O. Club in Georgetown, and we were all an xious to see what sort of show they would pu t up on their home ground.

A few min utes' wait, then tbe engines roa red into life and we were off to a good start. So was the rain. It caught up with us soon :ifter we had cast off and for a good hour at least it was a neck an,d neck race all the way.

It was none of your trifling showers either, but a good so1id tropical downpour. Thanks to my three-year-old Bookers $7 raincoat, and to a "sturd y t weed jacket. it didn' t get past my shirt, but some of the boys who had t ravelled w ithout jackets or rainrnats were wet to the skin in about ten min ute,, and were soon close to shivering--especially poor " Fish .'' who was certainly not in his element here. Just when it seemed as if we were beating it the engines broke down, whereupon the rain, with a fi ne sporting gesture, left us and went on ahead to lie in wait for us a few miles upstream. T here, in due course, it ambushed us and gave us another drenching, but when our engines again went on strike it probably decided against continuing such an u neven fight, and left us in peace until we were about to dock at about 11.30. when it came down again and gave us everything it bad, even to t he uttermost drop.

For several minutes before reaching the dock we had been passing rows of neatly made troolie houses-labourers' houses we learned later. The <loci< itself consisted, besides the wharf proper, -there was a ship alongside-of a great flat expanse of ground with a large warehouse at the end. There were two big cranes on the wharf, bigger than any I ha,·e seen in Georgetown :, several motor vehicles of many types- from oil waggons to jeeps-were parked outside the warehouse, and I also noticed a dump of considerable size where lay the carcasses of wrecked planes. · Cold, wet and hungry (especially hungry), we were held up in the warehouse for another half-hour before we were bundled into a weapon carrier and transported along some of the finest roads in British Guiana to Barracks 96, where we were to be quartered. A quick change into dry clothes and

we were shepherded over to the native mess for "chow."

Owing to a slight misunderstanding, we weren't expected, but in spite of that the cooks quickly turned to and soon put before us a huge meal of scrambled eggs and bread. lt w as then: about 1 p.m., and by 5.30 we ha.cl polished off two more sub-: stantial meals. Apart from eating, the rest of the afternoon was spent in resting, some of the boys taking time off to run a 40 yards race-to the end of the barracks and back-for the prize of a bar of chocolate (some choco¡ late, chewing gum and Cola-Cola bad been kindly sent over for us by the Air Base authorities).

We were all ,eager to go sightseeing over the base, especially to get out to the airfield, one runway of which was visible from our quarters, but it was not to be. Bad luck stalke'<l us all the way. We were told that the heavy rain had made it necessary for the authorities to commandeer all the available transport for the purpose of bringing personnel in from the line and that there was therefore no vehicle available for us. At night, however, the strain would be eased, and then .... ...... perhaps .... . ..... and with that promise we had to be content. Eventually, at about 5.30 p.m. the boys, at the invitation of Sgt. Vowles, set out to investigate the respective merits of Messrs. Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby via the gramophone, and Mr. Cameron and I decided to make a brief and unofficial tour of the base on our own account. ¡

After attending the ceremony of changing the guard outside tbe Pos~ Hl'adquarters, we inspected the Chapel, the Theatre, the Post Exchange, an~ the Officers' Club (all from the outside ) , and :finished up by climbing the slight slope leading up ro rhe runway and setting foot on the tarmac; though in fear and trembling lest a landmine explode under our feet or some jack-, rabbit of a sentry should spring up from the earth with a "Halt ! Who goes there ?" or whatever it is the Americans. say under such circumstances. Our short tour conv.in<ceid us¡ af what we had suspected before- that ¡the Base is a very large plaee. I ,Jo,n'll know how many builcljngs there are, but we beard people talking about Buil,ding No.. 246, so. ther~ must! he quite a number.

At 6 p.m. w.e had a ,date at th~ pkture house; the film. was "Three Hearts fQr Julia," and for 'many p:l'lis was the high spat Qf the trip. At 8 p.m., aftet'i the show, <?a,me the "'(ab.le Tennis TQurnament, which took place in the large Men's Recreation Rall.

The matcbe.s were well centested. Th.e s.c hgal team was victorious by 12 points to 2, but it is noteworthy that i1' severil sets the score~ were 19-all., and that all those sets were won by us. Perhaps the n,ost exciting set waS; the one in which Greeves, down 12-12, cam~ back to win 22-~0.

After the tournament Lieut. Black, who had arranged it., kindly presented the team with a dazen T~ble Tennis balls which were received wirh great pleasure, as they are unobtainable in Georgetown $,bops. The promise to take us out into the airfield not having materialised~ permission is never granted to visitors at nights, we are told-and it being just too late for a projected visit to the Officers' Club, we betook ourselve~ to our quarters, and so to bed. An early meal the next morning, and by 7 a.m. we were on board a launch bound for Georgetown. The trip down wa~ uneventful, and we docked at 9.30 a.m., none rhe worse for our adventure. Our thanks are due to Lieut. Black, Sgt. Vowles and all the others who contributed to making the trip as enjoyable as it was.

Reminiscences of the Berbice Tour By "NEMO"

No matter how short a tour may be, it must have some incidents, amusing or otherwise, that are worthwhile recalling. As it was, this tour lasted for two days, but the number of events that h appened in the 48 hours worth recalling are too numerous to be mentioned here. However, a few are noted.

On the journey up we discovered that both "Bullet" and Skipper Geoff claimed to rival Frank Sinatra, but they failed to convince us that they were singing and not talking. "Arab's" great propensities for eating fonmd an-

other feature of our discoveries; he devoured half of the eatables that were shared out on the train while the rest of us bad to be content with the other half.

On arriving at New Amsterdam we went to our different places of abode, most of us going to the school dormitory. No incidents of note took place until long after nightfall: to be precise, at 11 p.m.

The "Hydra " alias "Skull" then desired to announce bis presence in New Amsterdam. As he journeyed home from the theatre be spoke to his companions in his load megaphone voice about bis boxing prowess at Q.C. People heard him even though they were sleeping, and they were heard complaining on the following morning of hearing thunder rolling the previous night. Not satisfied with this he proceeded to keep bis fellow¡ men as well as the boarders at the High School awake the whole night by airing his views loudly about nearly every subject under the sun . He was not hushed even when the boarders above poured water down on him. Believe it or not, he continued speaking until dawn.

Immediately after tea the following morning this individual disappeared from New Amsterdam. It is reported that he went about 9 miles out of the town; be went walking. He returned about 4 o' clock, one hour before the soccer match was scheduled to start, and then sat down to a meal which comprised, among other things : 50 wiri-wiri peppers and 20 fish bones.

When be got up from this repast bis plate was as clean as a whistle. At. night time be disappeared again, but only for a short while, and like the proverbial bad penny be turned up in the end.

During the rime "Skull" bad disappeared other episodes were happening to the rest of the party. Du ring the morning hours "Bullet" was heard to be plaintively inquirng as to where he was living; be could not find bis home-imagine that ! The rest of us. however, spent the morning sightseeing.

It was during this time that the Chinese member of our party, "Roy," made bis acquaintance with the subject of bis nightmare on the same nig!_)t. It was a fair damsel in a store on the Strand.

He continually repeated her name in bis sleep.

It was not until after the midday meal that "Fatty' s" short but sweet 'amour' came into being. All of us were introduced to this young lady, who said she admired all of us; but the fat one ............ Wbat did "Fatty" do ? Did be return the compliment ? No, be blushed and remained silent.

With the soccer match came Smith's disappearing trick. He ¡was knocked by one of the opposing forwards into a dry trench, all that was seen of him for about ten seconds was bis feet (boots and socks intact) sticking straight into the air.

After the match Geoff tried to rival "Arab's" eating propensities by eating two dinners--one a three-course one at that.

"Arab," however, was not

to be outdone so easily for at the two parties held for us that night he showed Geoff who was master. An onlooker was heard to say 'never before in history was so much food ever consumed by any one man.'

The cl imax to Patty's love affair came that evening. He being shy. even refused to dance with his heart's desire, and it ended up with "Aje" taking charge.

Geoff is reported . to have escorted a young lady borne at the end of the party; he returned to the dorm( at about 3 a.m. according to "Skull s" time-piece.

On our way ba.:k to town "Rory' thrilled us by getting off the t rain at every station and bidding us all good-bye. He nearly missed getting back on once.

We were all sobered up. and were brought back to earth from the lofty heights to which we had soared when we beard from Mr. Dow that we were expected back at school that same afternoon.

Anyhow, I am certain that all those who accompanied me on the tour will agree that it was an enjoyable one.

With what pride do we recall the good old days when our Footer team was a force to be reckoned with in the Senior League competitions- the days when the Dias Cup match was a walk-over for Q.C. In those times, such was their enthusiasm tha t men soon acquired great proficiency in the game, and as late as 1938, we remember Eytle, while he was still a schoolboy, rep~ resenting the Colony against Dutch Guiana. We recall, too, the great occasion on which we got as far as the semi-final in a League match aga inst the G.F.C. , an d drew twice before our opponents put one over us. Boys, because of their innate love for the game, and for the honour of the old school, practised assiduously. It is true that the team, as a whole, often represented t be College in senior foo tball, and by tussling constantly w ith its betters, raised the standard of its own game; but certain individual players gained even more practice by playing for outside clubs. Indeed, our football received a great blow when we came out of tbe Senior League. At the time it looked as if we were compelled to leave the League when the unsportsmanlike exhibition of a certain club h,d on one occasion resulted in the injury of one of our best players. Better would it have been for us now, bad we regarded that as one of those regrettable incidents which happen now and then. F0r it must always be borne in mind that football is not exactly a game for the 'nambypamby,' and one must sometimes come in for a bit of rough handling.

An attempt was made in 1939 to arrange friendly matches which were to replace the League games of old.

At first this system worked quite smoothly, and we were able to beat Berbice 5-0 that year.

In 1940, these friendly matches became fewer and fewer, and finally died ¡O

out. Although in the school magazine that year it was pointed out that the team was deteriorating owing to the lack of competitive games, we regret to say that little attempt was made to remedy the deplorable situation.

Our Games Master introduced a system of compulsory or organised games, by which it was hoped to give the boys as much practice as possible, and so stir their enthusiasm to a fever-pitch.

It is regrettable that we, boys, did not take it in quite the right spirit. We could only see that gone were our fine little practice games on the fourth-eleven ground: gone were the form matches which bad stirred our rivalry and given us so much food for argu:. ment; gone, too, were our chances of representing outside clubs-and here we were forced to play what a few years before had been a game after our owni hearts.

Soon the boys began to take a pleasure in inventing excuses and, as will be seen presently, this habit bas stuck.

The actual games organised soon deg.merated into mere farces in which fellows played reluctantly. Only in the last term of that year (' 42) did we pull our socks up, but it was too late.

That year the unthinkable happened. The Dias Cup, which, as we have stated, we had com,e to regard as our personal property, was lost twice within a very short space of time. ¡

We became acutely conscious of our weakness, and hoped that we would soon re-enter League Football; but it is regrettable that although we pleaded for this in the school magazine nothing was done about it.

Indeed, we were gradually sinking deeper into the mire. It is incredible, but true that between October 1941 and April 1942, the Q.C. team was not seen on the field. Was it therefore surprising that in June 1942, we were massacred by Berbice (3-1) and later by St. Stanislaus ( 4-1) ?

Recent matches have clearly shown us that it is the lack of pracitce, more than anything else that has caused our temporary deterioration.

We need to practice not only among ourselves but with recognized teams.

We have been assured that we will get this practice in 1944, when - we hope to re-enter League competition.

We must be prepared, however, to give up all petty engagements, imaginary or real, to give our captain all the support we possibly can, and devote heart and soul to practice-for only so can we perpetuate the school's honour, and once more be rated in football circles.

It rests with us, Collegians, to pull up our socks and achieve a glory never equalled in the past, for we will have risen from the mire itself.

Queen 1 s College Cadet Corps Autumn Term 1942 to Autumn Term 1943.

By J. E. P. COX, C.S.M. The Q.C. Corps has just passed through its 10th and fullest year as a Military Training body. The value of the work done in the Corps was first brought into the foregrot1nd by former members of rhe Q .C.C. who had joined tbe Volunteer Corps (Home Guard) and who, because of their military training in the Q.C.C.C., were able to be put straight into rifle or machine-gun platoons. The result of this was a letter from 0.C. Volunteer Corps ( Cpt. Way) to 0.C., . Queen' s College Corps, in which he said that he would like to regard rbe Q .C.C.C. "as a reserve to draw on for the Volunteer Corps. " During this year Major E. J. Heywood was made 2nd l.C. Mobilised Militia, and throughout the year his interest in the Corps was of great benefit to it. Also, our former Second in Command, 2nd Lieut. Hamshere was promoted to First Lieut., and never fc::got us.

So at last in this 10th and eventful year the Corps w.as recognised as a definite asset to the war effort. This can be seen in two ways. Firstly, the promotions of our Officers, and secondly, in the character of the training. periods.

Our O.C's hard work was rewarded by promotion to the rank of Captain on the 1st July, 1943. Later in the year (20th August, 1943 ) Cdt. Officers C. E. Barker and L. E. Dow were promoted to the respective ranks of 1st and 2nd Licuts.

As tbe whole training year was so full, it would be best to split it into its periods.

AUTUMN TERM, 1942 As usual, there were two parades per week ( besides those on Saturdays and Sundays for shooting) one being taken up with training for the Inter~ Platoon Squad and Arms Drill Competition which took place on the 11th of December, and the other with special group parades, i.e., the Surveying; Group, Signalling and Scouting Groups, or with training of N.C.O's.

On December 11th the Inter-Platoon Squad and Arms Drill Competition came off at the Police Depot, Kingston. The Umpires were Major A. B. Way of the B.G. Volunteers, Supt. F. Mullin of the B.G. Police, and Capt. J. Makin of the Mobilised Militia.

Both Platoons put on a very good show, and nearly tied. No. 1 Platoon getting 60 points out of a possible 80, and No. 3, 59 2/3 points.

The outcome of this close rivalry was impaired by the absence of several members of No. 3 Platoon (A.W.O.L.) during the Term. When the points of the Competition were added to those for attendance, No. 3's total was 13 points behind No. l's.

Towards the end of the term a Shooting Competition was arranged a~ the Miniature Range by the M.R.C. The first prize was won by C.S.M,¡ Man-son-Hing, who was closely seconded by Cadet Watson. The latter was awarded a silver spoon.

On November 28th the Surveying Group under Lt. Hamshere and Cdt. Officers Barker and Don went up to Providence to do some field-sketching.

The Group travelled as far as Providence in a Mobilised Militia truck, then proceeded on foot across country to the Lamaha Canal. By following the course of the Canal the Group arrived at the back of the Botanic Gardens, and thence to Q.C. A sketch was made of the whole traverse. After breakfasting on the canal's bank, the group bathed. Throughout the traverse, citrous fruits and sugar-cane were well disposed of. The sketches made in the field were brushed up by Lt. Hamshere ;ind commended by Col. Hooker.

On November 8th the Corps attended a Drum Head Service held at Eve Leary in celebration of Armistice Day. SECOND TRAINING PERIOD-(SPRING TERM, 1943) Just about the beginning of the term the services of Lt. Hamshere were This put a divided between the Cadet Corps and the Mobilised Militia. spoke in the wheel of the Survey Group. On his transfer to active service with the Garrison on the l 8ht January, Cadet Officer C. E . Barker was promoted acting Second in Command.

The ordinary parades during tbis year were carried out by groups (Surveying, Scouts, Signallers) in mutti, in field -craft and weapon training ( the rifle), besides which there were special parades at Eve Leary for the ten senior (by age) Cadets and N.C.O's. Thanks to the kindness of the Volunteer Corps, especially Major Way, they took the form of abbreviated courses in the T.S.M.G. (Tommy gun) then Bren (L.M.G. ) and the machine gun.

Our instructors were members of the Volunteer Corps, and the Cadets who/ went through these courses are very grateful towards their instructors.

On the 2nd April the Corps under Cadet Officer Barker went on an allday Field Day. After marching to the back of tbe Botanical Gardens where the Corps met Col. Hooker, Major Heywod, Captain Makin and Lieut. Hamshere. After being told the plan for the day, several tactical manoeuvres were carried out under the direction of Major Heywood.

These manoeuvres were modelled on the new tactics found to be most successful in modern warfare, viz., fast-moving columns (blitzkrieg) and the pinar movement.

After each movement both the Colonel and Major Heywood gave several useful hints and pointed out mistakes, and the latter at the end told us bow to improve our field-craft especially crawling under fire, since some of the Cadets exceiled in the "Ostrich Walk." He further commented on the zeal shown by the Cadets.

Shooting this teem was taken up mainly with practising for the InterPlatoon Competition, snap and rapid fire being concentrated on.

The competition which began on Saturday, 2nd March, lasting until Saturday 3rd April, was run, briefly, in the following way--eacb platoon presented an "A" and a "B" team, each consisting of eight men; the "A" teams did three series- Grouping, Snap and Rapid, while the "B" teams did twoGrouping and Application. The general condition (scoring, etc.) were those of the "Country Life" O.T.C. Shoot.

The shooting on the whole was very good, and contrary to expectations, No. 1 Platoon emerged the winner with a score of 6 IO points out of a possible 680-against No. 3's total of 576 points.

For the highest score in the "A" teams, Cadet Thomson G.S. (No. 1 Platoon) was awarded a spoon, while Cadet Evan Wong (No. 3 Platoon) got one for the highest score in the "B" teams.

THIRD TRAINING PEROD (SUMMER TERM, 194 3) This term, the sborcest in che year, was nevertheless just as full of activity as the others. The parades were divided into four series.

Firstly, there were practices for the King' s Birthday Parade, which took 'place on the 2nd June (which Parade consisted of the longest column of servicemen, ex-servicemen, Cadets, etc.) . For its turn-out the Cadets were congratulated by H is Excellency the Governor.

Secondly, there was introduced and taught Battle Drill. (sectional).

Thirdly, the.re were parades for training Cadets and N.C.O's in Guard mounting and sentry duties.

And fourthly, there were practices in the indication and recognition of landscap¡e targets, in preparation for the last series of the Inter-Platoon shooting compet1t1on. On che 24th June we were visited and inspected by the Area Commander, S.C.F. Brigadier Stokes-Roberts. During his brief visit Brigadier Stokes-Roberts said that the Q.C.C. Corps compared favourably with other simlar bodies in the West Indies, and told us that we would probably go on a Military Training Cam,p during the August holidays . .During this term there were four important series of shoots. Firstly, there was the Empire Test for all Cadets and N.C.O s. Secondly, there was an Open-Range course for ¡those who obtained first-class passes in the Empire Test. The results of chis course were very good. The three highest scores being C.S.M. Manson-Hing, Sgt. Taitt and Cpl. Chow.

Thirdly, there was the N.C.O's shoot, which was won by Sgt. Isaacs.

And fourth]y, on the 17th July the 4th series of the Inter-Platoon shooting competition was at long last held.

In the series C.S.M. Manson-Hing indicated for No. 1 Platoon, C.Q.M'.S. Cox for No. 3. Only the "A" teams of the Platoons took part in this series, and consideting that it was their first landscape shoot .t hey did not do so badly. No. 3 Platoon came ont on top in th.is series with a total of 46 points against No. l's total of 4 3.

This brought the Inter-Platooh and Efficiency competitions to a close, with No. l Platoon (Sgt. Isaacs) winning the ~hooting Shield, and No. 3 (Sgt. Taitt) the Efficiency Shield.

MILITARY CAMP Our training period, however, did not end there. D ue to the kindm ss of the Area Commander, Col. Hooker, and the efforts of Major Heywood. and C apt. Baldwin the Corps was able to travel up to H.M.P.S., Mazaruni, where they encamped ar Colony Ho se from September I st to September 8th.

This camp was certainly no bed of roses, for the work was tough. and the meals were not very good, due probably to the fact that there was one cook for over forty persons. Despite this however, everyone bad a good time.

The training took the following form : In the mornings we were given an abbreviated course in bush fighting by Capt. Sutton, which included direction finding by the sun and long serl1ji-cactical marches through the forest.

The only casualties were scratches made by the razor grass. After lune~ Platoon Battle Drill was taught by W. O . Ca~tro. Unfortunately we were unable to use blank cartridges. In the evening a guard was mounted at 6 p.m. and dismissed at 6 a.m.

On the last day of the Camp a. temporary Rifle Range was put up and the whole Corps. Cadets and N .C.O's shot at a target about 250 yards away with .3 08 ammunition.

N.C.O's also fired a few rounds from the hip; besides, those members of the Corps who had taken the course in the mechanism and how to use the Bren (L.M.G.) Gun, fired this weapon.

During the course of the week we were paid a visit by Col. Hooker, Major Heywod and Lieut. Hamshere, who took some photographs.

Many lessons were learnt) at this camp. not all of a military nature, and although the discipline was slack great keenness was exhibited.

This camp ended the training yJar ( 1942-4 3) . A year which, eventful and containing useful t.raining, bore some unavoidable disappointments. The main ones being the abandonment of the Surveying, Scouting and Signalling .groups, due to too large a programm on hand. Next was the impossibility of carrying out the nsoal competitive shoot with other schools in the W.:.st Indies, due to the difficulties caused y the war. This state will probably last as long as the war.

The keenness shown in the last year bas not decreased in the present year. This was sho~n when volunteers were a·sked to go on ~uarq d.uty while the Garrison was on its Rosignol-Georgetown 'march (Congrats to the boys of the B.G. Battalion S.C.F.) .'· Not knowing what they were in for they stood up quite well to mosquitoes, rai~. lightning and thunder.

These guard duties were carried out in conjunction with the Volunteer Corps (Home Guard ), and several old Q.C. Cadets were met, in fact' some guards were like reunions.

Finally, we must bid farewell to several members of the Corps who left us either after the third term or after the Camp, and especially to C.S.M.· Manson-Hing and to Sgt. A. E. Isaacs, in whom we have lost a very good shot and one of the best all-rounders the Corps bas ever produced. To these we wish every success. in their new occupations, and I know that their wisli is that the present members of the Corps carry on the good work.

By V . L. SMITH There has been lll;Ucb improvement in numbers since the last magazine was published, and the new recruits show that greater zeal and entbnsiastn: lacking in. some of the older members.

At the end of this term our troops numbered seven Cubs, forty-four Scouts and fourteen Rovers, wbicb shows an increase of one dozen in the Group.

Our Scout-hut was white-washed within and the patrols (six: in number) were allotted 'Patrol Corners,' while the other half of the Scout-hut was opened and furnished by the Rovers, under tbe leadership of Mr. Darey, Colony Commissioner of Scouts. Rover J. S. Edgbi11 did very good work in repairing and painting our Scout flagstaff. We must welcome our new Asst.

Scout-master, Mr. Barker, and congratulate Rover Isaacs, who bas received a commission in rhe South Caribbean Forces as a lieutenant. We wish him the best of luck, and know that be is "Prepared to gi~e Service." Also Rover W. K. Manson-Hing has left to study engineering. To him, too, we wish every success.

We had a very good chance of winning the Rodwell Cup bad it not been . for our sad deficiency in attendance.

W e held our yearly Camp on Leguan Island under the leadership Messrs. E. Dow, Barker, and A, P. Thorne. We pitched our camp about a hundred yards from. the Leguan wharf.

We had a happy, quiet sojourn (the only incident being that Fisher swallowed a few water beetles one night). We played a cricket match against the Enterprise team on Leguan's only cricket pitch but were beaten by nine runs. Mr. Dow top-scored with 12 runs. One bad to be careful when running towards the boundaries lest one should soddenly flounder ankle-deep in pools of water. ..... '"" We also paid a short visit to Wakenaam.

During the past term _scoot work bas been intense. Eleven scouts gained their Second-Class badges, and 28 Proficiency Badges were awarded.

The Troop heard with deepest regret of tbt death on acti\fe service, of our former popular S.M. "Taffy" West.on, but we know that he died "doing bis best." Te Mrs. Weston we exund otlt most sincere sympathy, and wet say that we too, will always remember him.

I should lik,e to comment on tht standatd of attend~nce, 'Which was rather poor during the latter part of the year. Scouts should show much more in~ terest in their activities. So let us hope that the standard of efficinecy will be the same as it was in past years.

Rover Notes (By T. R. J.) After one year the Q.C. Rover Crew is showing definite progress. The new recruits of the last year have now been changed into Rovers with a desire to be out in the open, away from the terrors of schoolwork.

In their lust for the open the Crew bas visited many districts around the town. These visirs-accordin.g to them, "cykes"-take them off the beaten track and show that a bicycle could go anywhere in any weather. The most notable of these "cykes" is one to No. 2 Canal last January. Travelling along muddy tracks in ¡the rain, the Rovers followed the Conservancy, and finallY' reached the public road at Leonora. Besides that there were ochers to Has-' lington, Nancy, Ogle, Peter's Hall and Pull-Over. There was no Camp in August, as the members of the Crew had other activities, but a week-end camp was held at Blankenburg during October.

Besides displaying 'guts'-alleged¡ to be lacking in B.G.-the Crew also tries to develop the brain. In December last year the Crew received lectures in First Aid from Dr. Barrow. In the ensuing exam. all the candidates were .successful. The Crew braved the rain to present a demonstration camp kitchen at the Guiders Training Camp in May. A lecture on the "Rupununi" was given by Dr. Duthie. In the earlier part of the year a morse class was conIt was, however, discontinued in ducted by Rover Mate Manson-Hing.

August when he left the Colony for Canada. It is boped that the class would soon be restarted.

Between June and October tbe Rover Scout Leader, Mr. Dorey, was out of the Colony but the Crew continued under the leadership of Rover Mate Cole.

Besides these activities the Crew organised a party at Easter and a dance in August. The dance was not a financial success.

Within the last three months there has been a slight drop in numbers.

Besides losing Manson~Hing, who bas left to study engineering in Canada, the C rew bas lost N. M. Isaacs, who has left the colony to become an officer in the South Caribbean Forces, and A. E. Isaacs, who is an assistant to the geophysicist in the Makenzie district. Besides, tbere are others whose jobs would take them out of town for indefinite periods. As a result, recruits would be welcome. Any youth over 17 with a love for the open air and its relief from the fear of impending examinations would be gratefully accepted.

Queen's Part in the Science Exhibition (J. D. McB. M.) This Exhibition, which was organised by the B.G. Science Club oa Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (16th, 17th, 18th August) and later re-' opened on Saturday 21st, was a huge success, as evidenced by the crowds of visitors and the interest shown by those attending. Many outside firms and Government D epartments co-operated, but the part played by Q .C. was indeed a major one.

The Chemical, Physical and Biological labs, as well as most of the lower floor of the main building, held ex hibits put up by Queen' s.

In the Biological lab. there was a realistic miniature landsj:ape of prehistoric times, showing huge animals wandering among strange tree-ferns, while in the air flew winged reptiles. and in a m iniature sea lurked othet' strange creatures. Here also, could be seen models of the Heart, Ear, and Eye; and on peering down the microscope one saw a Bete Rouge as large as a flea, and looking much more fearsome.

Passing on, in the Chemical laboratory were shown, by eager demonstrators the electrical analysis of gases, the synthesi$ of Ut'ea and bakel ite plastics, the manufacture of artificial silk and the beautiful colours given by cert ain elements when heated to a high t em?eratme. Some interesting colour -:hanges which are very u~eful to the chemical analyst, were being demonstrated nearby.

There was also a model of a plant for the extraction of Sulphur (as done in Louisiana, U.S.A. ) , and one for the Synthesis of Fertilisers.

Following the streaming crowd to the P hysics Lab., one was somewhat bewildered b y the " Ever-flowing" Jug, and then marvelled at the telescopes, skeleton models of steam engines, magnetic and electrical ex periments, and the automatic fire alarm (constructed by a Sixth Former). On the back bench one could "Try one's Reflexes"-and those who did were surprised to get a severe shock.

On the lower floor of the main building there w as a Photographic exhibit as well as an electrical apparatus, which showed on a screen, the waves of sound coming from a radio tuned to ZFY. Both of these were put on by our Lab. assistant. In the same dark room was the Luminous Cascade (a stream of light pouring from a bottle) and a model showing bow eclipses of the, sun are formed. Altogether, over 60 exhibits were arranged and demonstrated by the College.

After such activity one could next go to the other dark room to sit and see films from Mr. George Benson' s projector. This is indeed a foretaste of what may soon be a regular feature of College life, thanks to the enthusiasm of this "Old Boy." It can now be u nderstood that when the Exhibition closed at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, 21st August, Q.C. sighed in a tired manner but felt proud that she had played such an important part in the first Exhibition of the B.G~ Science Club, and the first of its kind in this colony.

TRAGEDY (An Essay by P. A. Thierens) The presentation of tragedy dates back to the t.ime of the Greek civilization. Thespis was the first Greek to introduce in narrative form a tragic theme; his successors, Aeschylus, Sopbacles, and Euripides developed the idea and finally modelled tragedy on a dramatic basis.

The genius of the Romans excelled in oratory and poetry, but produced no tragedian of great merit, with the exception of Seneca, and he imitated the Greeks.

After the Greeks no outstanding tragedian appeared in literature until the time of Shakespeare. To the mediaeval poets, as Chaucer expressed it,

Tragedie is noon oother manner thyng N e ban in 5yngying crie ne br.waille.

But for that Fortune alwey wole as5aile.

With unwar ,trook the regnes that been proud.

Their tragedies then, were mere n arratives, sucb as the Monk's Tale. They depicted a total reverse of fortune coming unawa!'es on a man of high estate, giving the notion tbar man is the blind and helpless plaything of inscrutable Fortune, which appears to smile on him for a while, then suddenly strikes him down in bis pride. Shakespeare brought his own dramatic style but be retained this notion ; thus tragedy in Shakespeare is always a sto ry of exceptional calamity leading to the death of a m an of hi gh estate. His motive was that the fall of a prince afliected a nation when suddenly he fell from earthly greatness to dust ~ his fall produced a sense of contrast and a conviction of the Omnipotence of Fortune. When we behold the maddened Lear :

"A sight most pitiful in the meanest wretch, Past speaking of in a king," we are more impressed by this picrnre of fallen greatness than we would have been by the sigbt of an ordinary madman. Modern tragedy, however, bas departed from this rule, and in Galsworthy's " Justice" we find a tragic h ero of no extraordinary conception. the new tendency being to present external force overwhelming th e helpless individual.

But, unlike Chaucer, and Dante, Sbaketptare's tragic ideal was not the mere narration of suff'e rings, even if they were of Pantagrudia11 dimen11ions. like those of Job. His was the drama in 'which, as it advanced, we see the calamities following inevitably from the¡ deeds of men, and the main source of these c ie~s :; Ch aracter. \Vbile at times be represents abnormal conditions of mind, such as the sc mm :,1bu hsm cf La<ly Macbeth and the insanity of Othello and Hamlet, yet such conditions are ne,¡:: incrc .10ced as the o rigin of deeds of any dramatic moment. The vital point about bis tragic heroes is that the ~ouue which they adopted seems desti ned soone r or late r to bri ng them to their end. Accidents which play :1 p rominent part in human life are not excluded from tragedy. But at the same time there is the danger that coo large an admission of them would weake.n the sense of the casual connection of char_acter, deed and catastrophe, and consequently Shakespeare used them sparingly. Many of' the incidents wh ich superficially seem to be accidents are not really so. For instance, there is no doubt that the delay ,of the friar with the letter in Romeo as:id Juliet is .in accident, and one of terrible consequences, for it is the cause of rh eir deaths. and in Macbeth (Duncan's visit) occur lace in the play and do not, as in Romeo and Juliet, change the aspect of the 'play. In the latter there is nothing to suggest a tragedy, and we feel that bad it not been for the accident the play would hav,e ended h ~ppily. Thus thll play is more pathetic than tragic. In Macbeth and Hamlet, on the other band, the accidenta only serve to shorten an inevitable process, for out impression throughout the play is tb,lt death is the necessary end of the bernes. Therefore it is not the accidents but the action• issuing from character which is the dominant trait in Shakespearean tragedy.

Therefore he bas built all bis tragic characters on a grand scale, suffering terrible conflicts, bocb external and internal. In bis earlier tragedies there is a total absence of chis internal conflict which he seemed to consider his h appy medium. Thus we pass from a rough and u npolished first attempt, "Titus Audronicus" where there is excessive bloodshed and all the actors appear "o'ersized with coagulate gore" to the masterpieces Coriolanus, Macbeth and Hamlet, in which, while there is still some external conflict-for the characters could be arranged into antagonistic groups--yer the conflicting passions of the heroes dominate the plays.

To depict clearly this conflict of ideas within his h eroes Shakespeare bas presented them with a marked one-sidedness-desire, passion or will , attained in them a terrible force. To conceive the grandeur of a tragic hero be should be compared wirh another kind. Dramas like Cymbeline and the Winter's Tale, which seemed destined co end tragically, owed their happy ending tO' the fact that the principal characters failed to reach tragic dimensions. Again, in the Merchant of Venice, Shylock is obviously a tragic character, therefore bis tame submission detracts from the excellence of the p lay. The hero's tragic trait, which is bis greatest, i$ essentially fatal co him- to meet circumstances something is required which a smaller man might have given but which h e cannot give. He errs either by action or omission. Romeo'• faqJt; for ~ample, was bis excess and precipitancy; Richard Ill. his murderous and Machiavellian ambition.

It is a striking face that in most cases the tragic error involves no breach of right, and is accompanied by full conviction of the senses. Hamlet for instance, was painfully conscious that duty was neglected, and Anthony clearly perceived that be followed the worse of t wo! courses. But the "dram of base" in them "doth all their noble substance often doubt to his own scandal. " Macbeth, however, is an exception to this rule. H e did what b e knew was villainous. Ariosto, the Italian tragedian, excluded all such guilty h eroes, but Shakespeare bad wider sympathies, and consequently gave to Macbeth a conscience so terrifying in 1tsi warnings that the sight of inward torments compel a horrified sympathy which balance the desire for the hero's ruin.

Shakespeare is not the only English tragedian, but in his works we see tragedy in its most complete form. Tragedies in opera are, at the best, the narration of a sad tale; there is not ample room for character study. To find rivals for Shakespeare in the field of tragedy we must resort to the Frencb--Comeille and Racine. Their work is conspicuously marked by the observance of the ruler-unity of time, action and place. In 1634 Mairet, the forerunner of Corneille, formula red these doctrines in bis tragi-comedy Sylvanaire; neither were violent scenes permitted on the stage. Therefore in Corneille's major tragedies we find much longer dialogues than in Shakespeare's, for certain characters are introduced m erely for the purpose of reporting the progress of the action. In two of his plays, "The Tempest'' and tile "Comedy of Errors," Shakespeare observed these rules, but h is tragedies-Macbeth, Hamlet. and Lear--only conform to the uniry of action. Like Shakespeare's, Corneille's tragic

genius deals with people of rank, but be does not represent them as the v1cttms of rumou5 passions; they all struggle between family and patriotic devotion, and devotion fo~ their coun• tty always triumphs. We may compare bis Horace with Shakespeare's Coriolanus; in both plays the ambition of the heroes is thwarted by family connections, but while Coriolanus' heart was moved by the tears of the women, Horatius ignores sentiment and serves bis country.

"Le Cid," the .masterpiece of Corneille, can not be considered as a t ragedy in tbe Shakespearea n sense, for the hero Rodrigue does not die, but merely loses bis lover. Racine, on the ocher band, presented characters which bore more resemblance to Shakespeare's than to Corneille's, for they were subject to cm p angs of love and passion. He returned to rhe Greeks tor bis subjects, Andromaque and Britannicus, bot infased into these classical models che sencimen• talicy of France.

The Schoolboy and His Relation to the Liberal Concept K. M . W. CARTER Nowadays we bear a considerable volume of calk on liberty and the heroic efforts being made by a generation twice in arms to preserve for posterity their cherished idea l. It is right tbat men should, in tbis manner, commemorate a heritage so great, with influences so benefici I in their moral, social and political aspect, and to strive co maintain and fuccher chem, but in this symphony of universal acclaim there is one chord scarcely strud. and chat is an adequate recognition of the part of the Schoolboy ( interpreted in a very wide sense) in promoting ch~ liberal concept, and sufficient cognisance of the face tint, in the ultimate triumph of liberty rhe Schoolhouse will be its m.ost useful iosticution, and rbe source of irs greatest pride.

Liberalism draws its greatest strength from the intellectual institotions of the land. and rightly so. for self-government first conferred its manifold blessings oo the schools where its practice was most enthusiastically welcomed, and to whose life it gave a form and a uniformity. Consequently, the most brilliant schoolboys were led to achieve the "grand reputation" by their peculiar aptitudes and talents. On Speech Day the cynosure was held by aspirants to mtellectual distinction, while on Sports D ay, the most gifted athletes were tbosl who, breasted the rape and wo n the laurels, gain ing thereby the acclaim of the hero-worshippers.

Likewise on the cricket and football fields, the ablest exponents of tbeic respective res wm!' selected to repel the invasions of itinerant teams. In the Cadet Corps the best men filled the best positions.

Bue it is in the several societies--literary and scientific- as in the House: organisations, that liberalism flourished in its purer form, for the Presidents fulfilled their dignities free from the trappings of staff supervisi.o n. aod the decisions of their Committees affected in greatet ot lesser degree, the life, progress and reputation of the school. On tb~ Games Committees, too, the boys held the D emocra tic majority, and even the most headstrong Game& Master felt the restraining influence of the captains. To round off this ideal, the Prlfect Sys· tem was established as a potent administrative institution, w ith responsibilities and powers, which tended always to the consummation of the Liberal regi me. Thus tbe liberal concept was justified in the schools, both in its theory and practice, and a new faith was born, a faith that transcended and superseded the old Conservative pragmatism, and while within the school walls this ancient approach to a fuller life received a new consecration at the hands of freedom• loving youth, outside swirled the sombre pool of Absolutist negation and dark tyranny of a static Materialism, in which floated the riff raff of decadence and decay, and the shattered) elements of a sterile philosophy.

And so self-government bad arrived in the schools. which is one of the most significant facts in •he history of libe rty, which is tbe history of mankind. At bis most impressive :1ge the schoolboy bad been encouraged to dtink deeply at the font of Liebrty so that when be left

Before this tidal wave of merciless Liberalism-inspired with broader concepts and a greater love of the spirit--Servilism must go from concession to concession, backward and backward and backward, surrendering here one ideal, yielding there another, in gradual retrogression, ever on the defensive, in the inevitable triumph of the Free Man. No easy battle is the battle of Liberty. Fo.r no ocher ideal h as so many stubborn battlH been fought, so much blood hem spilc, so much sacrifice been piled npon the altar-for her enemies ue stubborn enemies, deriving their strength in old glories. ancient traditions; the arts shackled by the Despotisms of past rime, and 1beir Religion, the Religion of Tyranny pillared in superstition, .aod ignorance and magic, and yet potent because it was lirmly rooted in history and its deficiencies were veiled by the widch of its scholarship. To these were> added the passion of love for cbe pasc, reverence, and rhe inscincc of self-preservation agai nst the new alleged Breakers of Images, which put sabre-ceeth in rheir mouths and steel in their paws. Thus they mobilised their resou rces, marshalled their forces, and, entrenched behind their 'E ternal Order.' they soughr to justify their ideals by fire and sword. The Progcessivl and Conservative occupy different orbits, and the clash mnst come. la this boar of peril, when the clouds bang low and all the land is dark, and when tbe machines of the Combatants are of tb? same tempered steel, there is need of the superior faith . Then the Old Boys are the men to mann the g uns, the men to lead the attack, for they arc imbued w ith the superiol) blessing of liberty. The vanguard of the faith is theics, for having casted its sweetness they valnt it dearer than life. "Place the young,'' urged Mazzine, one ot t.be cruesc prophets of the Faich, "at the head of the insurgent masses; you do nor know what strength is latent in those young bands; what magic ,nfluence the voice of the young bas on the crowd ; you. will find in them a host of. apostles for the new religion.

But youth lives on movement:. grows great in enthusiasm and faith. Consecrate them wich a lofty m ission; inflame them with em ulation and praise; spread through their ranks the word of fire, the word of inspiration; speak to chem of country, of glory, of power, of great m_emories." The bat tles of liberty and the Jives of its martyrs have always been the inspiration of scbooll>oys, and never have they grudged their careers or their lives, finÂľ in the conviction that the forces of liberty are irresistible and that final victory, however hard-won, is certain.

The battle of Liberty is a battle on two fronts, but defeat on the home front is more fatal, and viccory only the ultimate of a long, gradual evolution that is costlier and more difficult to achieve, and more insistent in its demands for social and cultural uplift "by the help of language, letters, and the printing press." Abroad, the voice of the foe is sometimes dnll, more often strident, bnt at borne it never wavers. Of what av.ail would it be to have the most deadly bombers winging over tbe battlefields, the most terrifying tanks ramblin8) through the shell holes, and her soldiers bearnig the finest equipment of the Mechanical Age~ if a limited number of schoolboys are to attend schools whicb inadequately stimulate the powers of the mind, and to study in buildings which rhroccle their aesthetic susceptibilities ?

The love of Jibnty, of beauty and truth, muse be inculcated at an early age and in a favourable environment, for the arts and sciences that have been the salvation of mankind can only flourish and rise to their zenith where the Liberal ideology is taken for granted. Therefore the increased number of school houses must be a contribucion to liberal arc and their facilities rendered available to the whole nation, and consequently, to human progress. Since the ignorant cannot enjoy Liberty, and since the new institutions of rising liberahsro most be furnished from the masses, and, fucLbern1ore, because the Democratic concept is an assertion tbac the w hole people can assume the dignities held in cruse during rbe past centuries by sovâ&#x20AC;˘

ereigns and feudalists, "we must educate our masters'' so that they may speak with a voic, enlightened and coherent. There is no more fertile ground for subversive propaganda. the strategy of l iberalism bas never so blatant a weak spot as in cbe uneduca.ed masses, and we may, by tracing the experience of the German people, see bow this ground may be sown and bow the flank may be turned. In Germany, before Liberalism became a potent fo(cc in it~ present proselyte countries, the masses were, in a greater degree than elsewhere. put in schools where Macchiaevellian and Hegelian doctrines were taught, and the schoolboys-and eveocu~ ally the whole nation-were steeped in Power Politics, Absolutism and Divine Right, :ind ~rood forth in the years which followed, as a barrier co the pro~ress of Liberalism. This drenching of the mind of the German Youth bas survived, in effect, until the present day as a grave menace against which Liberalism must reinforce its armour, firstly in a material way, and secondly, and more sucdy, by accelerating tbe education of the masses, w'bldJ is, co teach tbem bow to li.ve. Repulse in this field would be no small set-back to the onward march of Liberali.sm.

Let the schoolboys, therefore, be taught to appreciate freedom oil thought and independent opinion, and let them hasten to make these ideals play so integral a part in their daily ro11tine that they will value them more than. life. Let them also realise that Democracy is a universal art to be practised by man and woman, by soldier and saint~ by rich and poor. The flag of liberty can only be hoisted when the Augean stable bas been cleansed, when Absolutism in politics and Conventionalism in art have disappeared, and when the re are no forms or spheres of human life ro purify.

Bat we most :not be led to the easy conclusion tbat liberty is an end in itself, an ideJl of ready grasp and facile mai.otenance, for maintenance is the essence of Conservatism and sm:1cks of the harsh and the arid. Let us, schoolboys, rather look upon Liberalism as a means to-< wards an end.

Liberalism will provide the necessary spirirnal basis. to the Mechanical Age, wbich, in their marriage procession will lead us to our greatest freedom- the freedom fro111.

The meaning of the quotation is perfectly clear. Men may lose all, even life itself, in battling for a good and righteous cause. They may be among t he first to fall, and never live to see either the promise or the fruition of victory; yet they do not fail for they are on the right side, and their cause must win because it is strong in righteousness. " We see this truth enforced by the records of history. The Greeksheroes all-who fell at Thermopylae did not fail though they died. History still rings with their praises. The priest who sprang into the arena to protest against the gladiatorial games suffered death for bis act, but achieved bis aim-the games were abolished. William of Orange liberated Holland by a seri.es of failures which accomplished more than other men' s victories. His brother Louis fell in the first sad defeat in the struggle for liqerty, and was laid in a nameless grave, yet none cqpld say tlp~ he and the brave band of patriots that fell with him failed. They fell in a good c use, and with the cause they finally triumphed.

The Natural History of Georgetown An Appeal by Mr. J. H. BEVIS, B.Sc .. Q.C. Biology Master, for the ReviQal of a 'Live' Natural History Society.

An attempt is being made by the B.G. Science Club to make a collection of the animals and planes found in Georgetown and its surroundings.

This collection will be housed at Queen' s College until it is complete, after which it will be probably banded over to the B.G. Natural History Museum; but duplicates of the common animals and plants will be retained asa permanent College collection.

This project offers an admirable chance not only to boys belonging to tbe Junior Section of the B.G. Science Club but to any others who are interested i!l improving their knowledge of Natural History and in helping to build up the collection.

It is proposed to revive the Queen's College Natural History Society next term with a view to encouraging boys to take a more active interest in natural history. Members of the Society would make useful contributions by catching and mounting in~ects and making observations on the habits and life history of the more important types. Work could also be carried out in such subjects as tbe Birds of Georgetown, Animal Life on the Seashore, Plants and Animals in a Fresh-Water Trench, Wild Plants in Georgetown, etc.

It must be emphasised that the work of a Natural History Society should be essentially practical in character, and that such a Society can never lfl.ourish unless its members are prepared to carry out practical projects either individually or collectively.

Boys interested in Natural History can find in it plenty of scope for developing a bobby. Collection of Butter-Flies or Moths or Dragon Flies correctly mounted and labelled and neatly arranged in cabinets (made in the Woodwork Shop) would become a source of pride to the enthusiastic c(lllector, who will not be satisfied until his collection is complete.

By contributing duplicates of each specimen collected to the general collection, members of the Q.C.N.H. Society would be giving useful assistance to the B.G. Science Club.

I am hoping char a really 'live' Society will get started this term, and that its activities during 1944 will form a sound foundation for a permanent Q.C.N.H. Society.

A Trip From Georgetown to the Kurupung Falls" Mazaruni District

(320 Miles) (K. D. G.) Arriving at the Demerara River Stelling one clear, cold early morning, we embarked on the S.S. "Basra." Soon after embarkation t be steamer got under way and our great trip bad begun. As we passed rbe Lighthouse a beautiful day was beginning to break, and with the salt of the sea in our mouths we realized bow hungry we were. After a hearty meah one member of our party read magazines while the other two enjoyed some of the rarer 5igbts of Nature.

Tbe island of Leguan with its beautiful old church was our first port of call. Remaining there for about an bout' the boat then proceeded to Parika where it picked op tbe passengers wbo had arrived by train.

Leaving Parika at noon the, boat, puffing in all her majesty, beg?.n the journey up the.

Esseqoebo River. With its muddy water an d green forests bordering it. rbe steamer muse ~urely have looked like a Jase link between Georgetown and tbe far-flung outposts of British Guiana.

It r,ally was, and this: close contact with Nature was tbe first suggestion of adventure.

After travelling foe about four hours up the river we arrived at the U.S. Naval Base.

Leaving there with I; 0 marines and labourers, we were glad to set our feet on solid soil when we arrived at Banica.

Finding quarters for tbe night, we decided to make an early night of it, because we bad a hard trip ahead of us on the morrow.

W e were np early in the morning, and seeing that our rations were all right, we boarded the lorry.

What a lorry l There is a first and a second-class. The first·class consists ot' wooden chairs filled with (Obber cushions. These ace nailed into tbe boarding and sides of the lorry when they are required. The second-class !

There is rea lly no second·class. Crates, d.rnms. baggages a nd as many other inconveniences are provided foe those unfortunate ones who cannot afford the luxury of a bard-backed chair and rubbrr cushions. As there were' only three of us, we took the advice of a seasoned member of the party and travelled urst-class.

Leaving Bartica at 6.30 a.m. we travelled 75 miles up the Potaro Road, branched off and went 25 miles up the Issano Road until we ardved at Apanacbi Rest House, where we camped for the night. The rest house was surrounded on all sides by jungle, and with the silence only broken by the tw ittering of birds; we felt like intruders in this picturesque setting created by bountiful Naron:.

This effect did not lase long on us, however, becausi we were !OO tired to enjoy fully the beauties of Nature.

Signing the book we bade farewell to rbt Care.uke.ress and her bu5band, and after an uneventful 25 -mile trip we arrived at Issano compound.

Issano, terminus of the Mazaroni river, consists of a Police Station, a Government Rest House, the T . ~ H.D¡. steHing and bond, a sb:op and a few native houses.

On arrival we boarded the launch and started our joutney up the Mazaruni civcr.

On account of having to cross faJls and the currents, of cbe river, the bow of the launch is squa.re and in the air.

For the same .teasons. the bunch on on!y be steeud by two broad paddles which uc ried to its stern. At 2.3 0 p .m . we crossed over Toboko Falls.

Ir took ca reful handling and e.xpert knowledge of the currents to get us over.

At one time the force of the water was so 2reat tbat it took os five 11111-iutes co cross a distance of about 3 0 yards.

In moonlight we arrived at the Government compound, Kamakusa. a distance of 60 miles from Issano.

Tbe launch W2S fairly big. so h=mocks were slung in ic, ;i,nd after hav:ing signed our nrunes at tbe' Police Station we turned in for tin nigbc.

At 8.30 a.m. next morning we left Kamakusa, and after tr:ivclling a distance of 4 O miles we p11$$cd Oranapai and arcived at Eoacbu, a mile distant.

We bad to spend the night at Enacho, s<1 we spent the rest of the afternoon looking through. the diamond works. acru.rlly seeing bow the men wo~hd diamonds.

What we did not see we were cold about, and we tborongbly enjoyed oorselves that aftemoo.n, covering many squan feet of ground.

Necrt morning after a splash in the river, we were steaming up river when one of the men on the boat sighted a water cow in tbe middle of the river.

Immediately tbue was confusion.

A collection of weapon$ was quickly produced but to no avail. The shot gun and rifle wbich we had brought along were brought into play, bnt tlie range was great, and so was tbd determination of the water cow not to be taken, for it was now travelling for the opposite bank swimming under water and thus adding co one already inaccurate shooting.

It reached the opposite bank about 200 yards ahead of us, and when we arrived three minutes lacer we saw that our shooting bad had some effect, for there were drops of blood on the 'ground.

As it was useless going a'fter it, we returned to tbe boat and continued our interrupted journey.

Ar the month of the Kurupung creek we branched off from the M ay. and went 20 miles op the creek until we arrived ac the compound of Kurnpung. Kurupuog is the biggest and most liked compound in the Mazaruni district, and it is there that the Aboriginal Indians come from over the Kurupung Mountains to sell their hammocks and other delicately worked articles.

When we arrived there was singing and dancing going on, so we thought chat th~ people were having a festival of some kind.

This was not the case, however, because we! were later told that tbe people in these parts bad their enjoyment whenever they pleased.

We stayed there for a .few minutes, and then set our on tbe outward home suetchthe falls.

About 15 miles from the compound, the white foam on the water aononnced its approach. We hear the tumbling rush of water, but a bend hides it from oar view.

Bot now we see it.

Surrounded on both sides by green-covered mountains, this avalanche of unle.ished waters heps pouring into a now fast-moving creek, but it is only when we arrived at the top that we can admire Koropnng in all ber splendour.

Those big, ferasomelooking rocks, those rushing waters, green-covered mountains- the dreams of a traveller realized.

Pictures were take.n hurriedly, for dusk was beginning to fall, and after a hunied descent we began tbe return journey.

Camp was made at Kurupuog for the night, and next morning we were off early. Just before arrival at Enachu a labba was shot-a more than welcome addit ion to our canned food.

Camp was broken v,ery early the next morning, and we travelled the whole day 3na. part of that night, until we arrived at lssano. The lorry did not move off until noon the following day, arriving at Apanachi io the falling dusk.

The ride to Bartica was much better than the outward ride, because the lorry was well weighted.

We left Bartica the following morning, and it was with joy and peace io our hearts that we set foot on tbe Georgetown pier after an uneveotfol but very enjoyable trip.

The Life History of The Bicycle

By R. ESSLEMONT (Form !Va.) The forefather of the bicycle was the "Dandy Horse," introduced by a Frenchman into England in 1818, le consisted simply of ~o wheels, united by a flat woodeo beam. oqj which tbe rider had to sit-in the most uncomfortable way-as it was devoid of such a thing as a saddle.

Meanwhile the unfortunate ,ider, whilst doing bis best to keep the cont raption in an upright position, propelled it with a running action-that is to say, kicki ng the ground altermtely with the left and then the right foot.. Sometimes on level ground one could actually attain a speed of 10 miles an hour on this rernarkable machine, but unfortunately ridicule soon killed it, and it was doomed to spend its life in a musty old musenm.

Then about 1840 a Scotsman named McM-illan built a low-wheeled rear-driven machine.

This was something of a fail ure, but a few years Jaecr another Scotsman called Gavin Dalzell constructed a machine known as the Wooden .Horse.. It was built entitely of wood, having

a low saddle, and pedals which moved backwards and fonvards altemateJy, and which were connected by iron roads to the cranked axis of the driving wheel. le was a decided improvement on its predecessors, aod was certainly less ridiculed, possibly because the rider looked ridiculous.

In about 1860, however, the world's most uncomfortable bike was introduced. Again from France. It had two wheels of the same size, and was propelled by pedals attached to the front wheel, but the wheels were made of wood, with iron tyres, and a complete absence of springs.

No wonder before long it became known as the "Bone Shaker." le was not till 1880, however, that the "Ordinary or Penny-farthing," as ic is generally called today, made its appearance. It had a huge front wheel with a diameter of about five feet, and an absurdly small back wbed of about ten inches in diameter. The rider's "centre of gravity" was directly over the front wheel, the driving force being applied co the slme.

It became very popular, and before lo.og it was quite a familiar sight to eee daring young men wobblnig all over the road on them. le also became a familiar sight ro see daring youug men flying over the handle bar when they bit a sudden obstruction, such as a stone on the road.

At last came the invention of the rear-driven safety bike.

It was produced by Mr. H. J. Lawson in 1879, and fu:ed the type of bike for the future.

It was in 1885, tbatj the 1irst Rover Safety was put on the market. It was very much like the bike of today, and having two wheels of cbe same diameter it made impossible the header over the handlebars, whcib bad been the main disadvantage of the Penny-Farthing, whose nnfortunate riders never knew when they were going to get their necks broken.

As time passed various improvements were made, such as change speed gears, free wheel, drum brakes, etc,, all of which went to the making of the modern bicycle. The machine that can carry seven times its own weight safely, and carry a man a hundred miles at the mere cost of wear and tear, besides being one of the cheJpest, most US('ful, and most silent vehicle on the road today.

My First Day in the Sixth Bg S. D. S. HARDYAL " Vix factus artifer est" (It is rare that we find a self-made artist).

Philosophically opined a dark round head buried in an "Agricola" of Tacitus.

Even on close scrutiny, you could but dimly notice the lavish use of cosmetique on the nape to make up for that lack of abundant and long hair by whicbi you usually recognize poets. With practised oratory, I reproached him for his make-believe. But he bad a reply ready for me. His "Orator fit, poeta nascitur" cut me to the quick and made Jllie realise that the painful practice of oratory was no march for the gift of repartees in Latin. His was that perfect terseness characteristic of Tacitus. You could have guessed that be was a student of Tacitus.

Tacitus he loved for the very reasons for which others bated him. What then, with his constant perusal of the "Annals" or "Agricola" with that contemptuous sneer born of success after an easy battle. To one unfamiliar with him, he might seem a descendant of Tacitus. Even when be told you be was of Anglo-Saxon origin,¡ you might still give credence to the suspicion that be was either a Tacitus or a Cicero, if you thought these Anglo-Saxons.

Puzzled as I was by this talk of a self-made artist-for this was the Arts Section of the Sixth-I was further embarrassed by the sudden outburst¡ of French from another with conspicuous shoulders. With characteristic intuition the latter made towards me with a stately stride, apparently to enlighten me, for be bad seen my state of perplexity. With these words he accosted' me : " Qu' avez-vous ? Ceux qui e'tudient les sciences s'appellent hommS?~ de science. Nous aucres, nous nous appelons artistes. N'est-ce pas ?"

Thinking that it would look mean should I appear embarrassed, and

trying hard to vei1 any outward semblance of ignorance, I got rid of him ,vitb a "Thank you,'' fearing to speak in French lest I should annoy him by my

errors in what seemed bis native tongue. Bue in my heart I was more thankful co another, who was later to become poet-laureate of the Sixth. for "quoting" a gem in praise of that Frenchman who had left me in no better a plight than before. Incidentally. that gem was an impromptu one.

This was ma y first da y in the Sixth, and I thought to embarrass me was not the way to welcome me. Paradoxically, it was. The first thing I bad learnt in Latin was that it was dead language. Here in the Sixth, ir was spoken-French. I had assumed, was a foreign language. "Oui" or "non monsieur" was all I could say fluently in French, whether or no it was in reply to the master's " Questionnaires."

What then, exactly, was the Sixth ? Was it dead, since Latin was dead, or was it foreign, since French was. I remember boasting of my being the best in English, Latin, French and Maths. in the Fifth Form, but then l do not remember having ever quoted an impromptu gem, nor spoken Latin and French. Logically, in the Sixth I was not to be the best .in Latin, F rench. nor English. Maths. I never loved, since I found no pleasure in it.

"This is the best mathematician in the Sixth."

I turned around suddenly at these wo11ds and was introduced to a sleepy-eyed boy. I thought t.wt I would be best in at least mathematics, judging from this boy's appearance.~ But my blood ran cold wben he started tro lecture me on "Amusements in Mathematics." At these words. I realised I had entered a new world. I had fallen from my pedestal.

M y immediate thought was to turn to science, but then I remembered that science was not made for everyone.

AU of a sudden. I saw io vague words a lesson I imagined written on the walls of the Sixth Form. I doubt whether I shall ever forget it. Somewhere in the file-notes of our Anglo-Saxon, he as a moralist has that lesson written.

I had read, but learnt nothing from his writings, not because I did not think him a Shakespeare or a La Fontaine, but because be wrote in Latin with commentaries in Ftench. It is the lesson of Humility, a lesson every Sixth former knows.

It is a lesson, too, that every boy bas t"O learn when he enters the Sixth.

I had learnt it on my first day in the Sixth. And every day in the Sixth reminds one of it.

Sitting under the shade of a stately palm, I was suddenly struck by the power of chcum, And wafted into the realms of Eternity, On the wings of pictur~que scenery.

The air was charged with refreshing perfume, Around here, surely, Evil had no toom.

The trees were filled with beautiful flowers, And bird& of gag plumage flocked the bowerâ&#x20AC;˘.

The golden-voiced canary led this happy throng~ When it suddenly burst into a peal of song, And bow melodious they did sing One cannot guess the joy they did bring.

The soil on account of its fertility, Produced vegetation luxuriantly, Thus the tall green grass growing quickly,, with profusion, Resembled the rolling of an emerald ocean.

The stream, with its music- like a triumphant war-bom, Brought dire Destruction to sad Grief and Remorse, And then wended its way in a rippling sound, fofusing delight in all things around.

The trees with their fruits made me think of Eden, Created on earth, a model of Heaven, And the fruits especially, so golden and shine Truly seemed to me light, from that htWm divine.

Neither the artist's brush, nor the writer's pen Can paint that picture as it should have been then, And whene'et this glory is seen by the eyes, The imagination would reel with surprise.

As I looked on t-bis wondrous scene of beauty, I pitied man's ingenuity, For try he may, with his wealth of knowledge combined Never could he produce anything of this kind.

To him it i.s truly a consolation, To him it is greatly an inspiration, To him it is happily a place of rest, Like Heaoen, when be is considered bled.

Mention of the Sixth p rovokes reminiscences of an infinirestimal room of Black-Hole-ofCakutta proportions with beings bursting the walls as they struggle for fresh air. An account of these creatures must be fired by a sort of barbaric inspiration, typical only of Mr. Wildcat Wix. the lion-earner, or of Rusty Rufus, the renegade.

As such inspiration is lacking I must needs have recourse to the simple statement of fact.

Wanbal the P irate naturally distracts attention w ith his fierce, razor-like face which pelps out from am idst h is thick growth of beard.

Furens, speaking in bursts like a Tommy-gun, and licking out at intervals a tongue which would awaken the friendly interest of an anteater, is conversing with Amos, the Greek god of witchcraft, with a "motley beard."

Amos is on the whole a queer creature. and might be a cross between a h ammer-beaded shark and a kangaroo. Almost unnoticed, however, is Sahu, the Indian snake- charmer, stroking with a p ladd smile bis "Zungb a" moustache, which provides ample m aterial for research work in a study of flora and fauna.

There. is. indeed, a divinity that ends our sh apes.

Noisily Wolfing Fernando's "Compress" ( alias "Sbvae-lce") is the descendant of Quasimodo, the Hunchback of Notre &cbool.

He appears to be undecided as to whether h e should assume the shap e of :i horned co.id or a rhinoceros.

He is easily recognisable b y t he family uniform, and also by the fact that his h ead hangs over his chest like a "dew-lapped" bull.

Indeed, th.. sight of him lends jusLilicacion to Raleigh 's statement that in Guiana there are men who carrv their beads under their arms.

Theocritus. the Buxton bard, famous for studying by the light of a cigarette stump under our pavilion, is reclining in a comer. This intellectual moron is usually quite p eaceful, but once placed among his books be instantly becomes a slaughterer of the type of Gllrngis Khan or Timur the Tartar. Look at him. now p acing the room and "vaunting aloud but rack'd with deep despair." Says the bard, with an intonation of frenzy that one might expect from a hoarse p ython that bas swallowed a live tom-cat " To go or not to go, that is the question Whether I should here remain amidst my books Or tum once more to native Buxton With its blooming monkey-apple trees."

" Ab," laments the bard, "Buxton with its pleasant fields of razor grass and friendly sand-flies." The "Goose.'' however, stands off and mocks him; the " Goose" whose corklike bead pops up above bis bottle-neck shoulders, which were aptly described by our Geography Master as the Straits of Gussie.

Head-in-Chief, Q.C. Police Force

A startled car proprietor dashed upstairs and rang Brickdam, gasping "Inspector, my car's missing. Only here a few minutes ago. A black Morris 4042. Entrance gained from alleyway." Immediately Police Headquarters broadcast this message : " Calling all cars ! Calling all cars ! Be on the look-out for Black Morris No. 4042- reported stolen and suspected to be ha ving some strange-looking fellows on board. Be careful, they' re desperate.

Watch city approaches. Calling all cars, etc."

M eanwhile car No. 4042 swung sharply into Camp Street in a northerl y direction. Immediately a horse guard galloped out, c2lled upon them to bait, and barred the way. The desperadoes hid their faces under their\ felt bats handkerchiefs, but they were quickly shackled and taken into safe custo.d y.

They kept a sullen and tight-lipped si:ence, refusing to answer the question~ put to them by the District Attorney. He, however, quickly identified them from the Police files and they admitted their identities.

They were 'Arab' (an old racketeer, and previously held on a dope-running charge and income tax evasion; wears a busby beard to set off his swarthy complexion ; ¡a crook rarely seen daring daytime); "Silvestre" or 'Dead End Tony' (a Line-op capture of a few years ago with an imposing list of convictions, and certainly no friend to the Police; once nabbed for removing a racing bike from a certain East Street home. "Rollox the Nose," however, quickly identified his property by some private marks underneath the saddle); "Crossus," (ex-chauffeur from Chinatown, boasting a saucy reputation from the Chicago Black Market. a clever. vindictive scoundrel who once stole m y notebook and whistle and soaked m¡y hat) ; "Rollox the Nose," (handsome, dignified, debonair, and sometimes remorseful and glum, a t earful mother's boy); "Cashew," or "Bobby Key" (beer guzzling playboy out on ticket-o' -leave- a very peculiar career of crime, viz., false pretences on 3 occasions; daylight robbery from person of a sleeping cop ; poultry theft (quite a few times) ; larcen y of 6 mid-day ;meals frorn a popular cook shop ; fortune-telling and teasing me John Greathead by aiming paper pellets at my heads and calling them names) ; and the "Man-Power Twins" ( the scarred 'Marathon' and the imposing, 'Pious Priksy) ."

High-ranking Law Enforcement Officers viewed the batch nad gasped; a Salvation Army Major nodded his bead sadly, a school child saw the 'Arab's' beard and fled sobbing to her parents, but I John Greathead knew they would

The Queen,s College Ap¡ary in 1943 At the beginning of the year the School Apiary comprised only one supered hive. The members of the Queen's College Beekeeping Society were determined to expand the Apiary, and accordingly started a new hive from the old one. After a few months the members were able to put on a super on the second hive, and also to start a new one.

As the hives increased in number, new members were enrolled, who displayed great keenness. These members were split up into pairs and trained to look after a hive. Meetings were held every Friday for the purpose of teaching new members the theoretical and practical sides of beekeeping, and also for noting the progress of comb-building.

The appliances of the Society were as follows : One spur embedder, seven veils ( which were recently repaired) , also a hive tool and a smoker, the kind gift of Anthony Clavier, a membet. The Society also possesses an observation hive which is of great value in affording members a close insight into the inner working of a bee-hive.

An extraction was made from the first hive which yeilded twenty-two ppunds of honey., 'this hive con~ined ten frames in the Super. "l'be ex~ t~action was made. 00. l!lil..e 2nd June, a.nether was ~ade Qn tbe 15th AJ1gust, a~d still another was made on the 8th :November. Froro. the last two extrac~ t(Ons 50 and 52 pounds were harvested respectively; these extractions were made from the two supe.red h~ves.

At the end of November the Apiary comprised two supered hives, each holding twenty- frames, and one brood of eight frames .
