By C. E. P. Jupiter AT THE beginning of the school year we welcomed Mr. R. C. G. Potter to the Staff as an ActiHg Assistant Master. The following term we bade farewell to Mr. Lighton, who left us for active service as a sub-lieutenant in the Navy. Mr. Dow, an old boy of the school filled his place.

We offer our congratulations to Mr. A. P. Thorne on gaining his B. COMM. degree, to Mr. R. C. G. Potter for his B.A. (Hons.)

English, and to Mr. F. T. Weston on his recent marriage. Our best wishes also go to Mr. J. Chung, who we understand is leaving shortly to pursue further studies in Art in England.

The magazine this year appears in an abbreviated form.

We regret this, but the School should consider itself fo~tunate ~o. have a magazine at all in these days, with paper increasmgly dtfhcult to obtain-not to mention the cost of printing, which has risen considerably.

We would like to thank our advertisers for their support, parcicularly at a time when their object is to conserve rather than to sell their goods. Thrmigh their generosity we have been able to issue the magazine al the usual price. The advertising agents, ~Pooran , W.Manson-Hing and J. P. Cox also desecoe a word of praise for the many hours of hard work they have spent.

Again there was no Speech Day owing to lack of space. Mr. Seaford. the Chairman of the Board of Governors, kindly came up and distributed the prizes to the prize-winners. At the same time, to encourage 'Grow more food' among the boys, he offered substantial money prizes to the boys who had the best beds within a sp~cified time.

We held our annual Athletic Sports in March at the B.G. Cricket Club ground. Sports were held here for the first time in an endeavour to get an oval track which could not be made on the G.C.C. Ground, and which was believed to be more adva ntageous to the athif tes. Two new events were introduced, Shot Putt and the Pole Vault, the latter of which proved a' hit' \\'ith the crowd. ~hree .records were broken; Carter, Phang, and Delph were champions rn their. -respective cla~ses. There were no Intercollegiate sports this year since neither B.H.S. nor St. Stanislaus could put out teams. We certainly hope that th ese sports will be revived shortly.

We ended fourth out of fourteen clubs in the Garnett Cup competition . One century was scored by the Captain Agard against the Y.M.C.A. Our application to take part in Parker Cup cricket was turned down by the Committee. The Jacob Cup for inter-collegiate cricket we won easily. The House cricket competition was keenly contested, the Shield being ultimately won by Percival House.

The Literary and Debating Society started well, but attendance and interest declined seriously towards the end of the year.

The Science Society has not yet been revived. The Bee-keeping Society showed life only during the extracting season. On the whole interest in these societies seem to be flagging. May there be more interest and spirit shown in the year.

The high standard of scholarship has not gone down much.

We secured third place in the Guiana Scholarship Examination and gained one Government Junior Scholarship.

We did not play in League Football, and played very few friendly matches, thus we were off-colour; and this was partly responsible for our losing the Dias Cup to Berbice High School.

01.!r Congrats however to Berbice on their first win of this cup.

Last year the writer of ' the Year in Retrospect ' deplored the lack of energy and spirit especially among the Senior boys. This year I can see great improvement but only in certain spheres, why not an all round improvement? Or do we need everywhere our Games Master's 'moral suasion!'

Hockey, a new game introduced by Mr. Hamshere was immensely popular in the school. The interest shown and hard practice put in enabled us to do quite well against older and more experienced teams, and to reach the semi-finals in the League Knock-Out competition.

The Lawn tennis club which started strong died ingloriously through lack of interest among the seniors. Th~ opposite happened in Table Tennis. Through the zeal of Mr. Cameron and the interest of the boys, we secured the first lien on the Wight Cup, which was presented by the Mayor for open competition at ~he end of last year.

Chess seems to be on the down grade. We were successful in recapturing the Mc Shine Cup, owing more to the individual ability of the Players than to any very great interest shown. We look for greater interest next year.

THE performance of the Q .C. team during the season, 1941-42 was, though not a triumphal procession, not much below the high standard set by the teams of past years.

The non-entry of a "B" team in the G :nnett Competition me:mt that new players had to be discovered in the House Cricket Competition alone. We saw promise in Chance, Carter, Cressall and Edghill, bit their task was a hard one wh en they had to fill the places of such players as Drayton, Phillips. Cannon and " Old'' Hinds.

Our Garnett team therefore contained at least five new and untri ed members. one obvious dis.advantage of the withdrawal of the "B'' team. Such as it was , however, the team did not fail. for we gained 24 points in the competition a·nd finished fourth out of fourteen teams.

Our batting was fairly consistent. We passed the 200 mark on many occasions and only twice were dismissed below 10 0 runs.

Of the batsmen Lord and myself were the most successful. I made sccres of 57, 66, 73 , and torped everything with a century (l03 ) against the Y.M.C.A. Lord was unfortunate in not getting a century in the same match , when he made 81 ; other innings by him were 77 . 76. 51 not our and 51. jimmy Parker sco red 59 not out and 87 in the first two matches but lost his form a(ter that.

Mention must also be made of a fine and most oppo rtune innings of 44 not out piayed by Norman Nobbs against the D .C.C.- a quick kncck which enabled us to gain our only five-point Yi:tory for th e season.

The bowling was a lot weaker than the batting. It fell chiefl y on the shoulders of Chin . Lord , Nobbs, Edd1ill and mvsc!L Lord ( slow leg-break ) and Nobbs ( fast break-ba~k ) were the most successful. Nobbs took the hat-trick against the T. 10 H .D .. ;rnd w::is unfortunate not to gain the helmet with the next bal l.

Altogehter our Garnett season was a go od one. It was long. but throughout the team ' s spirit was high and enthusiastic. I fe.t proud to be the captai n of such a teJm. one that always gave me their fullest co-operation.

In this competition we were once more successful. St. Stanislaus by winning the elimination match against Berbic~ High School, qualified to meet us in the final.

St. Stanislaus won the toss and batted first on · a good wicket.

They had a·n early loss in o ·connor but C. A . McWatt ( 63) and Harry Christiani ( 48) by good batting took the score to I 22 before being separated. The team scored 184 . runs in all. The ground fielding of the Q .C. team was good but too many catches were dropped in the early stages. Parker and Nobbs secured 3 wickets each for 18 and 21 runs, respectively.

Going in to bar on the sa·me day we scored 90 runs for 3 wickets.

On the following day, howeve.r, by consistent batting throughout our eleven we made 224, thus winning and securing the cup. Nobbs top-scored with 42, thus winning Mr. Lionel Luckboo' s bat for the best Q .C. all-rounder of the match. Lord, Westmaas and ·myself scored 33, 33 and 31 respectiv~ly. Nearly everyone reached doublefigures.

St. Stanislaus then made 130 for 2 and declared, giving us a sporting chance to win outright. We fell 9 runs short of victory with fi ve wickets intact. Lord made an aggressive 3 6 not out.

I must take this opportunity to state what is not only my opinion but that of nearly all who have seen recent Inter-Collegiate finals : that is that these finals should be played to a finish as originally.

Quite apart from the pleasure to spectators, the atmosphere of the match would be keener, and a keener sense of satisfaction and achievement afforded to the winners.

Northcote Cup In our Northcote Cup fixture we again met th e G.C.C. We we re in good form, having practised hard, and as the G .C.C. lacked 1 three of its best men our hopes were high. But on the first day when the wicket was rotten I lost the toss. We were 60 for six when rain stopped play. The following Saturday was fine, and we finished , with a total of l O1 runs. Bannister's batting was stolid, and his 39 not out his best for the se~son. Nobbs scored 23 in a·ggressivc ~tyle.

Our performance in the ~eld was highly commendable. The G.C.C. lost 5 wickets in passing our score, and these included DeCaires,

Our showing was good, and it is a question whether the G.C.~. would have won had they lost the toss.

Congratulations I cannot conclude these notes without a word of congra·tubtjon to Geoffrey Lord on his brilliant batting in the B.G.C.C.-G.C.C. Parker final. He scored 7 8 and 1 13 not out, a performance which makes us proud that he is a member of the Q.C. first eleven.

G. LORD-The Vice-Captain of the team. The No. 1 batsman of the. side, bis batting w~s as aggressive as usu a I. with his large vanety, of strokes. His forcefulness is very effective, but is usually the cause of his getting out. A very pretty bar to watch on the go, for every ball is punished. Although still the school's best 'keeper his slow leg-spinners have captured many wickets this season.

A very good field anywhere.

Represented the B.G .C.C. in Parker cricket.

L. WEST}':'IAAS-Our opening batsman and · witket-keeper.

His ~att1?g was :'cry sound, and on occasions he gets great power m his off-dnves. Should have made high scores but lacked nec~ssary concentration. Usually orthodox. but bas a great d~:.1re ~o h~ok no m.;itter on what pace pitch. which has lost him his wicket on many occasions. An improved wicketkeeper, but not very dependable. ·

J. PARKER-A batsman who seemed out for big things at the sta'rr of the season but proved disappointing.

Is probably the the most orthodox batsman of the side and rs never in a h~rry for runs. Possesses a strong pull· shot and good offdnve, together with a pretty push on the on-side. Gets out merel y through carelessness. As :i bowler keeps a good length, but docs not get the same pace off the pitch as before.

An indiscreet fieldsman; untrustworthy catch.

J. P. AGARD-Our erstwhile skipper, under whose leadership the

J. CHIN-Still the school's best fast bowler, but did not take part in many matches this season. Swings the ball both ways. and showed signs of using more head in his bowling. His batling h as surprisingly dropped off, but he should not find difficulty in improving as he knows about it. As a cricketer, would go far but presently he is much too temperamental. A trier on .the field.

H. WASON-An occasional member of the team. Used to be the sch~ol's most promising batsman, but his inability to use a straight bat has caused a great dropping off in his batting.

A bowler who keeps a steady length. A very fair fieldsma·n.

V. CHANCE-Ca'me in the side towards the season's close but was n:ost di~appointing. · : He· did not live up to expect;tion, and his batting was a fa_1htre. That was due to his poor footwork, for ·he has qmte a , few strokes, and hits the ball hard.

A good catch and fair field. ·

N. NOBBS-Has been most successful for the sbort time he played.

An all-rounder of great promise, his bowling this season was really top-flight, with a variety of pace off the pitch. Pertormed the hat trick against T. ~ H.D. His batting was much imoroved, at times sound, at times pggressive. A sound at times flashy fieldsman.

C. BANNISTER-The No. 4 batsman of the side.

Has proved a mo~t valuable addition to our batting strength. At ail times sound. and with that air of unconcern tb.n is so discouraging to the best bow !er. The team's most defensive batsman, with many strokes on the on-side. Much impro ved footwork, but still careless. Should be next season· s opening batsman. A poor field, but an improved catch. appointing. His bowling at times is Ye~Y steady, but h\s batting did not come up to standard. which was due to his extreme nervousness on first going to the wickets. Should tr y to pull him self together in the future. as be is a fair bat _with forceful strokes. A fair fieldsman but rather slack at t!mes.

D. BOYCE-A member of the teain on rare occasions. A left-h anded ~atsma~, but does not possess a free style. Uses a short bat hft which makes his sl:;iots look jerky. · Possesses some r;ood strokes behind the wicket, but as a batsman does not present a front of confidence. A fair fieldsman, but unsafe ca1ch.

Should look at the ball more, however. A slow left-arm bowler with a lot to le_arn. Took off the most catches this season and should develop into a· good fieldsman.

to obtain fertilizers and insecticides s i n c e the demand for those commodites has increased as a result of the "Grow More Food" drive, while the supply has decreased owing to the war.

'' Gardening at ~een' s College" hy 0. M. Y /JLZ before in the history of Queen's College has gardening N EVER been carried on as extensively as at the present mqment.

Not only is there the usual instructive gardening bnt there 1s also the "Grow More food" effort. The enclosed area which was formerly devoted to instructive gardening, was alloted to boys who were keen on growing more food, and soon proved too small to satisfy demands for more land.

This was the mainspring of a new problem-the difficulty of supplying the demand for land and of finding a spot suitablP. for the school garden . This led to the quest for suitable land. The quest met with apparent failure, but by dint of the hard work of forms III (a) III (b) and IV (b) and the masterful orga~izatio~ of Messrs. Bevis and Drayton, land which appeared almost 1mposs1ble to cultivate has been tilled and planted with satisfactory resuits This soil had been trodden hard by the feet of almost every boy since the foundation of Queen's College while grass was rampant.

The result of this experiment will probably be that Queen's College wit! have no waste or spare land uncultivated, for already new areas are tilled.

To be able to appreciate the results of the venture you should see it for yourself. Indeed one ex-student of queen's Coll~ge who wag invited to see our gardening efforts was simply astomshed to see the large scale of operations and though_t that the su~cessful cultivation of the land around the tank was akm to attempting the impossible and making it a success, But nothing succeeds like success. We have already reaped satisfactory crops of lettuce, kohl rabi, lima beams pole beans bush beans, black-eye peas, and radish. Other crops such as sweetpotatoes, egg-plants, sweet cassavas, beet, carrots, esc~allo~s. a~d cabbage, are now maturing. As this list shows, attent10n 1s paid to ola.nting a varied crop which would supply as many as poss1b_le of the nutritive properties obtainable from vegetables. Our mam difficulties lie in the difficulty of obtaining mclnure and_ the pr~ssing need of a fence . It need not be stated that it almost 1mposs1ble

This is in brief a picture of gardening at Queen's College. It need not be said that the boys alone were not responsible for the progress made. We-that is the boys who are growing more food at Queen's College-must thank the Priucipal for putting at our , disposals land and tools, and Mr. Bevis for his prompt and invaluable advice, unflagging interest, and the active part he has ¡ taken in procuring seedlings and in general supervision. Deserving inexpre::;sible thanks is His Excellency the Governor who was the propagator of the "Grow More Food" drive in the colony and is indirectly responsible for the large strides taken by gardening at Queen's College. Then too there is Mr. Seaford who ought to be thanked for encouraging us to do out bit and suggesting an immediate start during the August holidays. It makes one feel proud to know that we have done our bit and are still coming on.

May we ever continue to shoulder our rart of the load whenever there is a call to action.

1941-42 may be regarded as an epoch in our fortunes . We had been growing accustomed to a succession of seconds and thirds in the House competitions when we at last gained the cricket shield. In athletics we had once again to be content with "running up," but our challenge to "D" House wa·s serious, and gave promise of big things in future athletic meetings. In football we were weak, but even so, had improved on the previous year's performance. · The important thing about all we did was the way we acquired the points. The cricket shield was virtually won by the third eleven; in athletics we were without a champion . and in football. lacked any outstanding merit. Yet we contrived to pick up points, and were never at the bottom even in football, all of w~ich proves that our House effort was good and that we didn't need luck.

Last year we won the Cricket Shield. This year "A" have begun with the Athletic Shiel_d ( tying with "D" House ) . That we pulled it off by House effort .is shown by our winning the Standard Point Shield. Our fortunes are improving. Keep on winning "A." -L. A. \.VESTMAAS, Captain.

All this is not to explain away our failures in the competition.

It is just to remark on one of the' downhill things in Q. C:-te~m spirit-and to beg the boys of all Houses equally to stop 1t going down any further by simple Itttle things like turning up to games on time and every time, playing ~or the side, as part of a side. and raking all honour as due to the side a·nd not the person.

Our year history is not very shiny. Second in football, which we bad always taken to be our game. Third in cricket. and last in athletics, as has become usual. The losses in themselves d_on' t m:nter one bit, but if they discourage the House, Q.C_. never will get ~~ywhere. for where would she he without Raleigh. the Best Brmsh B11lldogs ?

AUSTIN HOUSE is at present in that unfortunate state where most of her senior boys on whom she used to depend have left school. Of those I would like to mention a few-L. Dow, wr.o is at present acting on the staff in place of Mr. G. Lighton; E. Nobbs, who went across to Trinidad to take up a job in the oilfields. and N. Nobhs, who also went over ro Trinidad but rernrncd to be with us again for the last term in the school year. · With regard to the various house competitions I cannot say that we have done so badly. considering our losses. In cricket we came third, due mainly to lack of ability and not lack of effort, because every boy in the House who had the opportunity of taking part in the competition did the best he could, although there were a few exceptions.

In athletics again we finished third. The boy g:iining the most po.ints for his House was G. Cozier, who won the Austin House Cup. The Under 15 Championship Cup was won by an Austin House boy-W. R. Phang.

In football the tide turned for the better, and we won the soccer shield for the third time in succession.

The year 1941--42 can be reckoned as a very successful year for "D" House; as a matter of fact, the best all-round performance was turned in by his house.

With the infusion of new blood, we easily carried off the Athletic Shield. In every division we were well repres_eryt~d.

Special mention must be made of Marks of the under 13 d1v1~10n who easily won the 100 and 220 yards, ?n~ also Carter and Jup1t~r, the former displaying great form by wmnmg the 440, 880 and mile races, thus emerging Senior Champion.

I We were second in cricket. Our first XI was very successful winning two matches and drawing the other after we had amasse~ the creditable score of 256 for 5 declared. In these matches, it was largely due to the bowling of Carter that V>;e .owed our success. Our failure to annex the Shield was due pnn~1pally. to a weak third XI and to the lack of enthusiasm among the bigger boys.

In Football , we were not so successful. This was not to be attributed to lack of ability on our part but to the fact that our best footballers had to study for their examinations and therefore were unable to play.

During the year, Mr. Lighton our House Master left us for active service and Mr. H. E. Watson filled the breach.

After so successful a year in school activ.it.ies,. we can only hope th at we can maintain or better our pos1t10n m the years .to come ; so "Kee p Trying "D" House," and I am sure that with your ability, success will follow you.

THERE is a strong belief among the more Gullible school-boys that their masters got where they are by long and exhaustive study at some first-class University, a belief encouraged by the masters themselves, who being a complacent set of men, are prone to lean back in their chairs and trace the course of their studies in order to shame boys into working harder. All masters have had a particularly tough time of it. One had had to study by the light of cigarette-stubs found in the grounds of the University, another had perforce developed amazing powers of concentration ; he had shared a small apartment with a large Chinese family, a crooner, and a trombonist ; yet a third had just barely paid his way by selling newspapers to eke out a scanty aUowance ; he would stand at street-corners shouting " Extra, Extra, " and on the intake of breath mutter the mean monthly !:'ainfall figures of Aleppo backwards; he had thereby acquired the art of addressing a class while learning what he intended to say to it. Talk about uses of a::lversity.

I had always given but little credence to these stories until my friend Hodge told me not to give them any, at all.

My friend Hodge is a school-master of long experience.

Which makes him a typical school-master. He had idled away his time at a University, making such a nuisance of himself that the professors had threatened to resign en rnasse if he were not expell~d. He had left knowing less than when he entered and returi:img to B. G. had become a chimney-sweep. He had taken to teachmg because he heard someone mention "ftue ., as being connected with the profession of chimney-sweep. Pe found that the only requirements of the new trade were a quick-mind and plenty of sang-froid. .

" Ah " said Hodge, " a thoughtful question. Ummmm. I · should say at least six years. " "The Principal thought we'd win in three years, sir. " "Well" said Hodge slowly, "six years if we take it easy three if we fight like mad. " " Do you think we should fight like mad sir ? " " Well, yes and no " " Sir, please sir, have you heard that we've advance into Germany?"

Hodge pondered a bit. His knowledge of the war ceased with its declaration. He decided to feign a little ignorance, " Yes " he said " I did hear that. But how far have we gone? That's what' I want to know. " " Well, yesterday we took Hamburg and Dresden . " " 0 that's old. I meant how much farther have we gone ? " Bradsh~w opened an atlas and jabbed a trembling forefinger down on it to trace the advance. " Since then we've taken Kremenchug and Mogilev " he said tensely. " Ah " said Hodge exulting ; He. banged the desk .

That's showing 'em' . " It's also rumoured we 1took Mu~~obad, and the bulletins say it's a big town, but I can't find it here."

"It's in that area " said Hodge helpfully. "If you can't spot it use the index. That's what it's there for booby.

There was a rustling of leaves. " Please sir I still can't find it " Here Hodge worked in som_ething fun!1Y a)Jout. Bradshaw's blindnesss and threw out a few hmts about his hohday m Musso bud.

At first Bradshaw seemed beaten, but he soon rallied. " Please sir " he said "I've just remembered sir."

"Ah Bradshaw, a Memory. " " It wasn't Germany we were advancing into, but Libya," Hodge paused only the brief~st se~ond. He was choosing between two replies. There was a little titter fr~m th?se near Bradshaw.

With a sly look of good-humoured d1sappomtrnent J:ie at !~st addressed Bradshaw. Germany did not sound sufficiently hke Libya for him to claim that he had mistaken the on~ for the ot~er.

So he said, " Bradshaw, I'm disappointed in you, g1vmg the whole show· away just when we had everyone_ thcrcughl.Y at sea.

THE year 1942 will date an era in the Athletic history of Queen's College. It will be remembered as the year in which th~ first cooper<:1tiv~ _eft'.ort was n:iade to run sports on anything approaching to sc1ent1fic Imes. It will be recalled as the year in which trial competitjons ~ ~ r e first introduced and designed to encourage systematic tram_m~ and to foster the spirit of athletics throughout the ~chool. ~s 1t 1s not the purpose of this record to present the detatls of this new scheme, I will now be brief. Let it suffice to say that never before was greater keeness evinced in the field of athletics: this, in spite of the Games Committee's resolve to forego the usual prizes.

This year we lost the valuable services of Mr. Weston who had been with us since 1935 and his post as Games Master was filled by Mr. H;:;mshere who stimulated interest in sport by the introduction of two new events, the SHUT PUTT and the POLE V 0ULT. We must make use of this opportunity to thank the Rev. MIine ?-nd Mr. Hogarty for the assistance kindly tendered in their respective events.

Making a slight departure from tradition we held our athl~tic meeting at Thomas (B.G.C.C) instead of Bourda (G.C.C.J where they had taken plac~ for the past 25 years. The attendance was quite goo_d, keen racmg was witnessed and three new records were set, all m the open ciass .. P. E. D. BOYCE-An old stager whom I have never seen breast a tape in spite of his reputation as a sprinter. He said he was developing a knee-lift which should prove advantageous in his future per f o rm an c es, but judging by results his benefits appear to have been nil. Was this due to an instinctive preference which in company with 'Odo' he evinced for the Ladies Pavillion?

Last year saw the start of a new venture in the school-the publication of a School newspaper. This was printed on the School Duplicator.

The first issue ~·as six pages in length. and sold out in the first few days. "Tw? pnzes of $ I each were :iwarded: one for seniors and one for Juniors.

LJNFORTUNATELY, there isn' t much I can say about the football played at Q.C. during the year 1941-42. It is true that we played for the Dias Inter-Collegiate Cup nvice during this period, but actually we only played serious football in the lase term of the year,. during which time the House Competitions were run.

For some reason or other which I cannot understa·nd, the average boy of Queen's today seems to have very little interest in soccer; maybe it is because we haven't taken part in a league for some years.

In the Junior School our Games Master tried to make football more interesting by rnnning a league. Four team5 took pan :ind took the n:imes of various animals-Alligators, Ago"utis, etc. This seemed to help to a great extent, but here again interest · was only stirred up amongst the boys in the teams and not throughdut the school. Vv'ell , we are hoping, and in all probability will enter a team next vear, and I hope to see a great improvement in the standard of soccer at Queen's in the near future.

In April. 1942, Berbice High School came down to play us for the Jacob (Cricket) Cup and so we took the opportunity of playing for the Dias Cup. I regret to say that this was the first time since October, 1940 th,n a Q.C. team was seen on the field. In the first half no goals were scored. although we threw aw,ay many chances; in the second half C. Bannister scored for us. At the end of the game the score was 3-1 in favour of Berbice.

Q. C. literally fell to pieces under what could not be considered any particular pressure.

As Berbice was in town Mr. H:1mshere took the opportunity of having a meeting between the Game.s Masters of St. St.1ni~bus and of Berbice and him se lf , and it w.1s decided chat St. Stanislaus should once again take part in the Dias Cup. We played in the semi-final s :1 gain st them in June ( 1942 ) on the G.F.C. ground. and the game en ded 4 - 1 in favour of St. Stanislaus. There is nothing much I can say about this match except chat we were be;:iten fairly and squarel y.

This being all that I can say for soccer at the present, I en up hoping that this year results will be totally Jifferenc.

DURING the past year great changes have occurred in the Scout Movement in the School.

The reorganised Sco_ut Troop advanced slowly, as most of the boys were new to Scouting. In April Mr. Lighcon, their Scoutm:rster left to become a sub-.Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Mr. Dow became Scoutmaster, while N. A. Nobbs assisted him . During the ~ast term. the Scouts have progressed steadily, many boys having obtained their Second Class badge. They attended the Boy Scout Paude on May 24th. In August they camped at Hope Beach under Messrs. Dow and Nobbs. )'.\t_the _Rally in the last week in August they we_r: represented, and d1stmgu1shed themselves in the Estimation Com pet! t10n. ~uring the last term the Group has been completed by the format10n of a Rover Crew for boys over I 7 and a Cub Pack for boys under 11. · ,.

The Cub ~ack under Mr. _Thorn_e is progressing as well as circumscances permit. At present 1t consists of 9 boys some of whom had been Cubs in other packs. ' ~he_ Rover Crew is under the guida·nce of Mr. Durey, Colony Comm1ss1oner for . Scout~. It first met in June and is making rapid progress. _It consists of two patrols, undu Rover Mates Cole and Manson-Hing. In August the Crew went on frequent hikes and camped at ~ope Beach soon after the Scouts. Ten members ~f the ~~:w were u~vested . as Rovers in the first fortnight in August. At . Camp Fire dunng the Boy Scout Rally an amusing melodrama was rer.idered by members of the crew. They prepared a si~ple knchen for the Camp Craft Exhibition which was held durin g t e ally. Ac present they are being instructed in the Sc. John's A mbulance Course by Dr. Barrow.

The Crew consists of 12 Rovers, but there is still room for more boys.

D URING the last school year the standard of Chess was fairly high.

There was, however, one deplorable fact-the grav~ lack of ,nreres t among the senior boys. Form IVa bad only three boys who were keen on chess, Form VI had only four ( three of whom have ,1ow left school ), while the Fifth form had no boy at all who was '<ee n on the game.

The younger boys, upon whom the fate of the Chess Club , vide ntly rests, are rall yi ng in fair numbers. and are quite keen. Their ~hief difficulty is to find enough time. due to their having to attend ~.1mes after school. The annual athietic sports meeting necessi tat~d t raining. and so much time was spent that way th:it not onl y did 'N e secure little practice but were also unable to hold a school tourna:nent.

McSHINE TOURNAMENT. The McSbine Tourna·ment was held in the last term of the past cb ool year. Under the leadership of our captain. \Vesrm;,as. we ret rie ved the trophy. which had been won the ye.1r before by t. Stanislaus. Once again we regretted chat the Modern High School could not "field" a team. and so we played on ly St . Stanis laus and Central High School.

Their plates were filled a·nd refilled: bottles after bottles of drinks ,~ere distributed but alw~ys it was " w e want grub." To add to the rim there was the sta~pmg. of feet and the pounding of desks with empty bottles. Yet, 1n spite of it all. it was a scene that revealed the true Christm.is spirit.

The latter half of the programme demanded tba't every form should stage a play. Forms I, II and Ill presented the typical Western drama dear to the hearts of all youngsters. The "Amateur Hour" prcsen~cd by IVb was very amusing, especially whenever an a·mateur was given the gong. And what a great number of 'a mateurs' got the gon~ ! Wcstmaas of IVa won much applause by his slcight-of~and t~1cks . It was a treat to watch him performing the bone and lime tnck and the die trick. h .Taitt and pavidson of Form V gave a boxin g exhibition which ad Its. funny side when both opponents fell down exhausted at the conclusion of the bout. fi . Dear Sir, Thanks to the efforts of Mr. C. E. Hamshere, July 1942 saw the end of another successful year of Hockey. There are now at least 90 boys in the school who play hockey and were it not for the difficulty of obtaining hockey sticks cheaply enough, I feel that there would be a lot more.

At the beginning of the year Q.C. entered a knock-out competition. They met and defeated Y.M.C.A. in the first match but took a severe drubbing from a very strong G.F.C. team out for revenge.

We have had to bid farewell to a number of boys who were rn the school hockey team last year. Such good play ers as Lee, B. Bannister. T. Phillips, Matthews, Clearkin and Johnson have all left the school. leaving a sadly depleted team. Their places, ho~ever, have been adequately filled by such boys as Nobbs. Green. Chtn, H. Edghill, J. Gaskin. G. Gaskin, Phang and! Westmaas, not forgetting our new goalie Storey, who is undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best goalie in the colony (don't blush, Daddy). .l'vl:iny of the boys who have left have found places in other Hockey teams.

r.is country a better place in which to live. The outstanding exiample of this pioneering spirit is to be found in South Africa, where the early settlers were willing to lea.ve the rich pasture-lands of the south an d face unknown hazards in the far interior.

Is this spirit of adventure to be found at Queen's College ? this a Collgee for the production of office workers or of men who will leave the comforts of city life and go into the interior of their l:eautiful country to earn their living ?

From my own travels into the interior I_ have seen that where there ,is a will there is a way. Some are a·pt to despise the "bush folk.'' but may I point out that were it not for the exports of gol1 , diamonds, etc., the tinanrial structure of this colony would be sencusly undermined.

What is wanted is a class of men and women who have some culture and scientific training, who could direct the rather primitin methods of mining, etc., employed in the jnterior, and W?O would also be willing to form villages-and later on, towns- which would be self-dependent. Once the interior had a nucleus of such men others would be prepared to join them. and pursue the normal activities of communal life.

And in my opinion it is to Queen's Colleg~ that British Guiana. should look for such men .

PERSONNEL During the past year ther~ were many notable departures.

Cdt. Officer Fernandes who must be congratulated on his excellent work in the Corps. Cdt. Officer Rowe and C.S.M. Nobbs, both obtaining commissio:1.s as Assistant Inspectors in the Police Force; Lance-Cpl. Green who left pre:,aratory to receiving a commission in the Local Forces, and Cpl. Franker, Cpl. Evelyn, Cpl. Bannister, Cdt. Isaacs and Cdt. Lee who " joined up" in the local Volunteer Co rps. To all these old Cadets. who are really carrying on the good work they started :1t Queen 's College, we heartily wish every success, and we are sure that they' ll never regret the days they spent in the Cadet Corps.

Although a very la'rge number of Cadets left after Autumn Te rm, 194 I. the strength of the Corps was kepi: up by the admittance .of an extraordinarily large number of recruits this year. This brought our total to 52 Cadets and N.C.O's. At present there are only 2 platoons-No' s. I and 3-platoon No. 2 being disbanded after the end of last yea·r owing to the departure of the greaLer portion of the members of that platoon .

Summer Term it was decided that the Cadets should be trained to be even more useful should there ever be an emergency, and consequentl y after listening to a talk by the Intelligence Officer, M.1jor Seal Coon, proceeded to work along lines leading to the formation of a·n Intelligence Unit. This meant the splitting up of the Cadets into three groups-Signallers, Surveyors and Scouts----each specialising · in its own particular type of work.

The Armistice Day Church Parade on November, I 941, was •;ery well attended, after which a letter of appreciation on the s.1tisfactory turn-out was received from His Excellency the Governor.

The King' s Birthday Parade on Thursday, 11th Jnnc. 1942, was also attended, and here again a personal letter of congratulation was duly received from His Excellency the Governor,_ Sir Gordon Lethem.

A visit to the Astor Cinema was arranged on the 3rd July, where films on the working of a modern reconnaissance patrol were shown.

This provided inva'luable instruction to the Scouting party especi.11ly.

The Corps also attended the Drumhead Service held last November.

Until October, 194 2, shooting was somewhat restricted due to lack of ammunition, and also for the same reason the Hodgson Cup was not contested during the l_ast school ye:ir. But on October 25 cadets were affiliated to the local Miniature Rifle Club, thus providing ample shooting and better instruction for everyone.

The M.R.C. has kindly put up for two separate compet1t1ons this term a Spoon and Turkey, the former _b eing only for cadets who are members of the M.R.C.
